Yeah, England could have 'rested' him for the next 2 matches and he could have announced his retirement after the ashes.
Again, for all the articles written on England's superior support/management staff, some of the happenings during this ashes makes a complete mockery of it.
Making public Trott's 'Stress-related illness' might have ended his career forever just like Trescothik. Last year it was Bopara's 'Personal Problems'. During WC 2011, it was Yardy's 'stress-related' problems. Compassion for all these cricketers, but why make it a public spectacle?
They could have taken the 'injury' route as many other teams do.

The noise builds again, Johnson running in, only for KP to pull away, pointing back over the bowler's arm... Johnson then reaches the popping crease and throws the ball down the pitch, towards first slip. Words being exchanged, in the testy style
52.4
Johnson to Pietersen, 1 run, fullish and on leg stump, whipped off the pads through midwicket a single
Johnson and Pietersen continue their discussion at the non-striker's end. This rubber ain't dead

KP was well within his rights to withdraw though he seemed to be doing it with annoying (for the Aussies) regularity. Mitch just picked an opportunity to bitch a bit and sledge him. Whatever it is, Aussies were comprehensively superior on a day that England headed into ahead of Australia in the match. Eng may manage to show they can lose to Aussies even after gaining a first innings lead. Very dismal show yet again, Bell and Stokes especially got out in a manner that was unforgivably soft.

That was the 4th or 5th time he did that. End of day 1 he purposefully time wasted during the last over of the day and even the umpire chided him. Mitch gave him a good peace of his mind. You reap what you sow.
