Monsieur Ibrahim and the flowers of the Qu'ran
and Oscar and the lady in pink
are two good works of Emmanuel Schmitt . Worth reading them if you haven't yet.

contemprary fiction
I recommend Mila 18 of Leon Uris, a heart-touching novel about the Warsaw ghetto during World War II, HMS Ulysses of Alistair McLean, his first and best (according to me) book which describes succintly in bone-chilling details about the dangers the allied navies faced in north Atlantic from German U-Boats in World War II, another war novel which remains etched in memory - Run Silent Run Deep - about submarine warfare. Somehow World War II novels remain my favourites among war novels.
Other authors I can recommend for crime thrillers are Stuart Woods, John Sandford and Michael Connelly while I strongly recommend Steve Martini for novels dealing with lawyers and court room dramas. He outshines even Grisham.
