lyrics by itself means a lot to me.
From Mumtaj Mahal (1944):
Dil ki Dharkan Bana liya.............

As I mentioned earlier I will post some songs by Saigal, Pankaj Mullick,K.C.Dey, Kurshid Bana, Suraiya,Shamshad Begum and others who were popular in 30s to 50s( Before the Mangeshkar sisters). Hope you like them. It is different style of singing! :)
Wonderful song raj sir. Thanks. Unbelievably this song had 40 second prelude even at that time. Khurshid Bana, what a sweet voice. When Melody 'was' Queen. Loved the caption, aptly said 'was' and not 'is' queen. BTW, do you know who composed this song?
Sunil,
Sorry missed your great posting from Babul. Talat & Shamshad Begum and absolute gem from Naushad ji. Thanks. I have never seen such big eye-brows as Dilip Kumar's.
Thanks SP & VS,
Here's another solid compositions from the late Ravi ji.
Dil Ke Arman Ansoon Mein sung by Salma Agha

With recent discussions on Karthik Raja and his capabilities, I just feel sorry that he didn't get his due. Grahan is one album I still listen to occasionally - extremely underrated :( hear the songs here, http://www.songspk.pk/indian/grahan_2001.html a must for all Rahman Ji and Raaja Saab fans, this audio displays the best of sensibilities from the two.
Here is song that wasn't featured on OST, the title credits "Yeh Muniya Piya Ghar" Ila Arun and Alka Yagnik , the male singer sounds like Master Rakesh but doubt it's him. The second song in the video, Kavitha Krishnamurthy - Nacho Jaise, fortunately is in the audio. First interlude is Vintahe IR material. Delight to watch Manisha Koirala again. :D

Never heard this song before, but I was definitely moved to tears after initial hearing. A song about a family giving their daughter to their in-laws.
Dil Mera Ek Tara sung by Sadhna Sargam from 16 December - an unnoticed and latest Hindi film by Karthik Raja

Salute to Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan Ji
Nigahein Milaker Badal Jane Wale from Pakistani film Mehboob (1952) composed by Rasheed Attre. The interludes are the same but I don't mind, it's a treat to hear such piercing music.

A song from Afsana(1951):
Kismat bigdi duniya badli..........

V_S: I don't know anything about the composer for the song by Khurshid Bano. If I come across anything I will post.

I liked the violin accompaniment! :) May be, my sons exposed me to too much violin!
Rajraj,
This seems to be a thread that I will enjoy. I think that the music director of that Khurshid Bano's song is Khemchand Prakash. It is a well known name. Though I read about him earlier I do not remember it now but I can look up if you want.
Super raj sir.:D You already introduced me a legend Khursheed Banoo in your earlier post (Dil ki Dhadkan Bana Liya), and now you have introduced another great pakistani singer. She sang flawlessly, except she was faster than the original. Not to mention another music director Gyan Dutt. I am trying to collect her songs, but it is too difficult as they are pretty old. I could only collect BEti (1941) and Bhakta Surdas till now, still hunting now for Tansen where Saigal and Khursheed Banoo sang together. May be in my next India visit, I should get all these (already made into the to-collect list ). Thank you so much raj sir for introducing us these legends and their timeless classics!
Manna Dey & Mahendra - Eh Maa Teri Surat Se Alag - Daadi Maa [1966]
http://youtube.com/watch?v=cWXUIwRG-wg
Never heard better lyrics than these
That was a wonderful, wonderful song on Maa. Thanks Sunil for sharing the Roshan magic! I really love these lines from the uploader comments.
Mohammad Rafi once said to reporters: "You listen to my songs. I listen only to Manna Dey's songs".
All around the world Mahendra Kapoor is idolised by millions of his fans as The Voice Of Their Nation, India.
That says it sall.
I heard it only in the nineties and do not know the meaning but I listen to versions of this often ( might have been posted already)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=funBs-fw9GE
Again, I heard it only recently. The song starts around 2:30

V_S: You are welcome! :) Not sure whether this was the song you wanted! I will post a song by a different singer next week.
Adadaa! Yes, raj sir, This one. :D Thanks a lot. Enna oru konjals in singing. All songs of Tansen; Diya Jalao, sargam song, Berso Re, Morey balapan all are immortal.
thankyou everybody. This is a diff world. I liked voices of kurshid bano or pakistani singer for their less shrieky and natural tone. I thought panchi banwra sounded like hum ko manki raaga, then learnt its different. Thanks.
There are many great songs by Mahendra Kapoor that I'm currently unearthing.
Here is Tumhara Chahane Wala.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwWVwULK-HM
Manoj Kumar and Mahendra Kapoor will go down in history as a parallel combo to Raj Kapoor and Mukesh
Wonderful song Sunil! It seems the lyrics is so good. When you have some time, can you please translate for me. I don't think it is Manoj kumar, it is Biswajeet.

Have a Happy Mothers' Day ! :)
and a good weekend.
I've tried my best, Sir! My Hindi and Urdu is slightly weak :(
tumhaaraa chaahanewaalaa khudaa kee duniyaan mein
mere siwaa bhee koee aaur ho khudaa naa kare
God forbid, that other than I there is no one else who loves you in god’s world.
ye baat kaise ganwaaraa karegaa dil meraa
tumhaaraa jikr kisee aaur kee jabaan pe ho
tumhaare husn kee taareef aaeenaa bhee kare
to main tumhaaree kasam hai, ke tod doo usako
tumhaare pyaar, tumhaaree adaa kaa diwaanaa
mere siwaa bhee koee aaur ho khudaa naa kare
How shall my suffering heart stress this,
The mention of your existence from someone,
Even the mirror applauds your beauty,
I shall promise that I’ll break that mirror,
I’m mad about your love and your charisma,
God forbid, that other than I there is no one else who loves you in god’s world.
wo din naa aaye ke muz se kabhee judaa hokar
kiseekaa pyaar dobaaraa kahee talaash karo
zukaake sar ko kisee ajanabee ke shaanon par
tum apane gam kaa sahaaraa kahee talaash karo
kareeb dil ke tumhaare kisee bhee haalat me
I hope that day never comes when we separate,
I can’t bear the thought of finding new love after losing you,
Bowing down to a stranger’s charm,
In difficult times whatever the situation please find support from someone close to you.
tumhaare dil ko kabhee muz se koee thhes lage
muze yakeen hai, ayesaa kabhee naheen hogaa
muze wafaaon pe apanee badaa bharosaa hai
tumhaaraa pyaar hee de jaaye naa kahee dhokhaa
duaa ye hain ke tumhaaraa, khudaa kee duniyaan me
mere siwaa bhee koee aaur ho, khudaa n kare
tumhaaraa chaahanewaalaa khudaa kee duniyaan me
mere siwaa bhee koee aaur ho khudaa naa kare
I assure you that I will never hurt your feelings,
I have confidence that I’ll stick to my promises,
God forbid, that your love for me isn’t a game or that you're playing with my emotions,
God forbid, that other than I there is no one else who loves you in god’s world.
Wonderful! Thank you Sunil. Really appreciate it. There are few lines and words (shaanon, ganwaara,..) which I don't know the meaning (especially the lines; tumhaaraa pyaar hee de jaaye naa kahee dhokhaa - why does he say that?), and without that, I could not get the whole poetry and its complete meaning. Now I can enjoy the lovely composition. What a lovely poetry!
A duet by Zohrabai Ambalewali and Karan Diwan in Ratan(1944):
Saawan ke baadalo unse ye jaa kaho..............
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtoj_gOZWcY
with lyrics
http://youtube.com/watch?v=YFdT1KToT_E
Music: Naushad.
There are a few more songs by Zohrabai I like. Will post later! :)
Rajraj,
That Ratan song is one of the songs I remember most. I watched the movie walking three miles and my mother used to sing it. Thanks.
Swarup
raj sir,
Excellent pick. Thanks for reminding Rattan again. I believe Naushad, Khemchand Prakash, Anil Biswas, C Ramchandra all ruled the 40s. What a talented group of singers! My most favorite song from this film is O Janewale Balamwa by Amirbhai Karnataki and Shyam Kumar which I posted some back here. This song is the first song in my Naushad collection, unforgettable!
A song from Dharti mata(1938/39):

Ab main kah karun kit jaoon.........
http://youtube.com/watch?v=HVsmFeXDAWA
Music: Pankaj Mullick
V_S: You are welcome.
Those days movie making was an art form. These days it is a business, in my opinion. Occasionally you see some art. :( I will return to Ratan after posting from other movies. Thanks for reminding me about your Ratan post. :(
Swarup: I am glad you are enjoying the thread that brings back memories. First Hindi songs I remember are
'ab tere siva' and 'chup chup kade ho'. Those tunes were used in Tamil movies. For me some songs remind me of the place where we lived when heard those songs first (I had lived in 11 places by the time I earned my B.E ! )
Rajesh,
I remember those songs well. I too went to four schools ( my father was a school teacher) and three universities including Madras U. That is why I still remember some Tamil songs. Here is a recent post covering some of those songs
http://atulsongaday.me/2012/05/15/go...inaa/#comments
The first female voices I remember from Hindi films were sort of metallic( described differently in the post) then with Lata! Geeta Roy and others became softer and then shrill. This may not be an exact descriptions but there were some changes , may be because many left for Pakistan. For some reasons I did not like the most famous of them Nur Jehan except for a few particularly the dhammal 'ho lal mere' www.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D6hF2OZlcdxs
Oops! iPad changed Rajraj to Rajesh. The last link was messed up too. It should be
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hF2OZlcdxs
I was listening to "jism" album this morning. Listening alone is good for health. For such a taboo theme and movie, songs are too fantastic to let go. shreya, m.m.kreem, udit does magic...
http://ww.smashits.com/jism/songs-2088.html
Nice old picks...thankyou raj, sunil, vs, gaddes .
Here is a song, probably known to most from Samsaram (Telugu, Tamil 1950 sung by Ghantasala, A.M. Raja respectively) with music by Susarla Dakshinamurthy. A similar song in Hindi film Sansar, 1952 has different credits but the same tune. I am partial to the Talat version but Telugu friends do not agree. The Tamil version can be found in
http://www.inbaminge.com/t/hits/List...aaram.vid.html
Telugu version in
http://www.oldtelugusongs.com/newson...shinaMurty.mp3
but I could find a video only for the Hindi version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nFkpNaxVYU
Swarup: Good to hear 'yeh sansar' again. This was posted by Sunil on Dec 1st. I also posted 'khat khat khat gaadi rook..' (kada kada kada loda loda vaNdi in Tamil). We were in Nagapattinam when this movie was released ! :)
I am trying to make a list of songs posted so far, a time consuming task!
Rajraj,
Thanks. I browsed through a few of the pages but missed this. The Telugu version " takku takku tamakula bandi lankanala bandi.." stayed with me since I saw the movie. Somehow, I find only Hindi versions on the YouTube not the Telugu or Tamil versions except for the song you mentioned above but with a different background. I hope that the Tamil and Telugu versions will also be posted on YouTube.
Here is a song in Ahir Bhairav from Meri Surat Teri Ankhen(1963):
Poochho na kaise maine rain bitaye.............
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH02CvlGGF8
This song has been sung by a few more singers. Here are two:
Mahesh Mulwani:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTbcMBL84q4
Anup Jalota:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiqFJ0vDUpY
The carnatic raga equivalent (or close) to Ahir Bhairav is Chakravakam. Here is the song I like from Karnan:
ULLathil nalla uLLam urangaadhenbadhu vallavan vaguthadhadaa karnaa...........
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxG9EzeAXi4
Have a good weekend! :)
raj sir :notworthy: You made my weekend with Poochho na kaise. Brilliant, brilliant composition by SDB ji. I heard that this song was first given to Rafi, since he got too emotional SDB had to rope in Manna Dey. After hearing Manna Dey saab, I have to agree that Rafi saab didn't sing it. Manna Dey thoroughly deserves the honors. What emotions, control, depth in singing! :notworthy:
BTW, engernthu sir pidichinga, Ustab Mahesh Mulwani and his tablaist. That was a great find! Thank you sir. I have never seen fingers rolling so fast for so long time. Hats off to that gentleman. :notworthy: Just because of that, I loved Mahesh's version better than Anup Jalota. I never knew the relationship between Ahir Bhairavi with Chakravaagam, till you told me. Now I can relate them clearly, especially the flute portions tells us the chakravaagam in it.
SP, Thanks for Jism and introducing MM Kreem. Beautiful soundtrack and a very pleasant one. Perfect for night time.
A song from Naghma(1953) Music: Nashad (not Naushad)
kaahe jadu kiya mujhko kitna bata............
Amirbai Karnataki (version not used in the movie)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgHmIinN-e0
Shamshad Begum (movie version)(embedding disabled)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vpc6ZsiUYx8
Both were great singers. I am not sure why the lyricist did not like Amirbai version.
V_S: I came across Mulwani when I was listening to 'poochho na kaise'. I listened to his version and liked it! :)
Heard it for the first time yesterday via the site roughinhere
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0QpprJJ1Ig
Seems to be one of the first film songs by Shamsad Begum in Hindi.
