LoL.
Michael character is potrayed quite well by Vijay Sethupathi. We don't know his past, but we learn from the proceedings that his childhood was not that simple. His silence and rage reflects his suffering masked as loyalty. Later he joins again with the 'statue family' not in greed, but to sustain his own life with Ponni. He respects woman and gives them enough space. He even requests the nurse to leave the room. These tiny attitudes potrays the sombery Michael. He also gets to exercise his emotion with the three prominent woman in his life :
- He wishes to marry a widow (in a soceity where remarriage is for men and walled corners are for women)
- He respects the love of Ponni towards Jagan, and blames his absence as the cause.
- He supports Yazhini and is always omnipresent in her life as an angel.
Think the intro of Michael had shocked several, as they see only a symbol of sex. The whole point is how devastating the life gets when the chatacters try to cope up with modernity and culture. In Aarohanam, she herself had showed middle-aged women from a different social class roaming around in tight gowns and consuming alcohol. I like the boldness in her films, even talked about it.
Anyway, she got the right to speak too, but placing her profession forward, I thought she went a bit astray.
About Fans she is trying to group around her argument : A Fan does not have a gender, just like movie directors or screen writers or authors.
