RAGA APPRECIATION/ MOHANAM


1. "Mohanam",the very name of this raga is synonymous with allure and beauty.It has the capacity to woo and captivate the hearts of both the cognoscenti as well as the lay rasika .It is a very simple pentatonic,"Audava/Audava" raga with five notes,both in aarohanam and avarohanam,with "madhyamam" and "nishadham" absent from both aarohanam and avarohanam.

2.It is a janya of the 28th Melakarta,Harikhambhoji.

4.It's Jeeva swaras are Ri,Ga and Dha.Amsa swaras are Ga and Pa.

5.It is one of the most popular ragas in carnatic music,capable of elaborate rendition,including RTP's, lasting upto one hour,with alapana,sangathis,neravals,kalpana swarams,gamakas etc.It is usually taken up in the first half of the concert as a main raga.It may also be taken up in the latter part of the concert for rendition of bhajans,viruthams etc.

6.The main rasas of the raga are valour,challenge,sringara and karunya.

7.The ideal time for singing the raga is the night time.

8.It's Hindustani counterpart is called "Bhupali" or "Dheshkar".

9.It is also an international raga,in as much as it's scales have been used in all the world music forms,notably in South East Asian countries like China,Thailand,Malaysia and Japan as well as in Swedish and Italian music.

10. Prayogams of the type of "Janta"(dual swaras like gagapapadhadha) and "Datu"(skipping of a swara in between like dhagarigasari) lend great enchantment to the raga and make it very captivating.

11.It is supposed to be a raga which was very dear to Lord Krishna, who captivated the hearts of all bhaktas and gopis with this raga on his divine flute.

12.It is one of the oldest ragas known to us and has been extensively used in Tamil Music, particularly in "Tiruvachakam","Thevarams" and "Pasurams" and in tamil panns it is called by the name of "Regupti".

13.It is a raga which is called "Sarvaswara Murchanakaraka" raga, meaning that each of it's swaras can be used to perform "Grahabedham",giving rise to other ragas.For example,when it's "Ri" is taken as "Sa", it gives rise to "Madhyamavati".It's "Ga" taken as "Sa" gives rise to "Hindolam".It's "Pa",taken as "Sa" evolves as "Suddha Saveri".It's "Dha" taken as "Sa" turns out to be "UdayaRavichandrika"
