What a song! VJ hits this one out of all the past, present and future night clubs in TN! :-) Think about it: She sings Muruga Ennum and Anbae Pudhu Kavithaigal in the same film. MSV could always depend on VJ to express tradition and modernity in the same breath.
This one is going on repeat mode for the rest of the week! A hearty thanks to priya32 for sharing this "sizzler"! Slow, sensual, and mesmerizing in every way!

Love it when you share album covers to go along with the picks! Thanks! (Is that Viji in a baseball cap? And Nalini in the corner?)

Raagam Kedaamal, Thalam Vidaamal...even this is VJ's muththirai :-) Good to know you feel the same way.
Heard the song for the first time when it was posted on Friday (had never heard it before.) After a few dozen repeat plays, here are some observations:
a. I can't recall another MSV tune that begins like this one. Quiet, moody strum and then a silent hush before "Anbae" creeps up...
b. "Anbae" is worked differently each time.
c. The lines in the two charanams that begin (respectively): Maththala Maelam / En Madi Oonjal - and then reaches the alto, a quiet fall, and then back to "Anbae." Just watching the equalizer on realplayer for these two segments I've mentioned, VJ's precision is simply astounding. You can check this for yourself.
d. A complex tune that is masterfully arranged by MSV without chorus or any gimmicky atmospherics. The pacing of the tune is pure artistry - a slow seduction that catches fire, lights up, falls back to a brief smoulder, lights up again...a wonderfully (and lyrically too) realized eroticism. The lyrics are suggestive; VJ never is.
e. The percussive feature of the tune is fantastic. Appropriately tender, playful, knowing and frenzied -- the touch of a lover, indeed.

That's your dedication, and I am sure I am not the only one that is grateful for your efforts. The overdrawn eyebrows / lashes do give Viji a Madhavi-ish aspect? :-) AIR would never broadcast a song like this in 1983 - too hot to handle! :-)
Naaz,
More than 'anbE' VJ uses the rapid voice modulation with each 'களில்' is the amazing part I love in this song. Yet, the last 'களில்' goes very seductive.

This is a rewarding song, filled with riches in every way. Yes, the KaLil endings are delectable. The prolonged Ondru / Ingu is both yes and no simultaneously! It is only after I started to listen to VJ's songs in the 70s (as a non-native speaker of the language) that I really learned the difference between La / la and Na / na etc. (And the rest I learned from the film posters / bills plastered all over (gone now) - hence my delight when I see tfmlover resurrecting them here.) These lessons are at the heart of the language, and so many recent (and not-so-recent) singers in TFM are yet to learn them.
There are many such little epiphanies (no better word to describe these integral moments ) in this tune that I stopped listing after I got to e. in the previous post.
The word "Porul" - and VJ suggests so many meanings when she pronounces it. Similarly, there is an anticipatory "aah" that quickly fleets over the first syllable of Aa-nandha Gangai Ondru...as the momentum gathers.
Anbae - it is at times a tease, a plea, a complaint, an invitation, a peeve....amazing how she does it.
This song could have easily gone with the cheap thrills, but the fact the it eschews all that and still holds every ounce of heat and eroticism intact -- that's what a refined artistic experience is all about.
The only other song by VJ featured here in recent times that has got me so totally besotted is "Aanandha Vetri Yogam..."
Thanks again to you for bringing this to the forum. TFMpage / Neel D rock!
tfmlover, Naaz, madhu & Priya, thank you!
