HYDERABAD, August 17, 2012
Laxman contemplating retirement

V. V. SUBRAHMANYAM

One of the finest batsmen in contemporary cricket, VVS Laxman, is contemplating retirement, at the most, by the end of the two-Test series against New Zealand.

Visibly hurt by the comments that by continuing to play for India he is blocking the chances of youngsters, a disappointed Laxman is now contemplating retirement from cricket and is expected to make a formal announcement either tomorrow or the day after. :(

For the record, the 37-year-old Laxman made his Test debut in 1996 against South Africa and since then played 134 Tests scoring 8781 runs, including 17 centuries and 56 fifties. He also played 86 ODIs scoring 2338 runs with six hundreds.

http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01181/IN17_LAXMAN_1181004f.jpg

Initially, he was not even keen on playing the two Tests against New Zealand - the first one to be held in Hyderabad from August 23 and the next one in Bangalore - Laxman reluctantly seemed to have agreed to play in the two matches and then bid adieu on the advice of his well-wishers. Incidentally, this will be only his second Test in front of home crowd in Hyderabad when he plays against New Zealand.

Laxman informed The Hindu that the retirement plans are being discussed by him with his parents, family members, coaches and close friends. "A final decision will be taken about the exact details of my plans by this evening," he said.

Former India players like Sanjay Manjrekar, Anshuman Gaekwad, Kiran More has slammed VVS Laxman after his poor run in Australia and want the team to axe Laxman and start building for the future. He has been struggling against his favorite opposition and former players want younger players like Virat and Rohit to replace the misfiring VVS.

Don't we have in HUB a separate thread for VVS? :searching:

wizzy
18th August 2012, 07:14 PM
In this era of heavy bats/ugly stanced cricket VVS was our last/only contact to touch players who made the batting look ridiculously but it reflects poorly on VVS if he really did quit on those hateful cricinfo articles..this decision only serves the likes of Sanju Manjus to feel triumphant/important and continue to shower us with their drivel

wizzy
18th August 2012, 10:22 PM
Gangs screenplaying..this is from a guy who had absolutely no regard for VVS and dropped him 2003 worldcup squad in the last minute much to selectors dismay.

"Even (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni, (Gautam) Gambhir, Ishant (Sharma) failed in Australia. It's a complete case of treating unequally. Age cannot be a factor," he said pointing out India's tour Down Under.

"I was doing commentary in that series. It was green-top all the way and Ishant could take only five wickets from four Test matches. If Laxman is singled out, then why not others?" he questioned.

"If this is the policy, then we will never be able to build a good side."

even Cheeka isn't spared.

"Srikkanth has a big problem in communicating. A player like Laxman would not train so hard just to keep himself fit for two Tests. If they (selectors) conveyed their opinion to Laxman earlier, this situation would not have surfaced. Why they stretched till August? Probably, the selectors' judgment has hurt him (Laxman) the most," Ganguly said.

Ganguly also feels that Srikkanth's selection policy would be detrimental to Indian cricket's progress.

"They don't select a team taking the future of Indian cricket into account. They merely do a balancing act by means of removing and adding somebody. Indian cricket will not progress this way."

some love for Dhoni

Someone who doesn't mince words, Ganguly was also surprised to find Laxman state at the press conference that the latter "found it difficult to reach Dhoni."

"A skipper should be available for his players 24 hours.

I don't know why Dhoni does this... But I think situation would have been different, if Laxman had got Dhoni's support," Ganguly said.

"Making this sound like a farewell series (for Laxman) does not make any sense. It's a fantastic decision... By this he has sent a loud and clear message to the selectors."

look @ me :rotfl2:

I was playing (in a series) and then took the decision. But in his case, he does not have a future in IPL... He was training very hard for about four months at NCA and expecting to play this season when he had to take a call. Hats off to Laxman. He is 200 per cent right in his decision."

Great news...wondering whether he will get a chance.

Considering how weak our middle order will look without VVS and Dravid and also that Sehwag has expressed his wish to play in the middle order during the past..I think it is a good idea to send him down the order.
It is time selectors for seriously consider Sehwag's role in the team....bullying teams in the sub continent in tests and playing one good match now and then during ODI is something to be looked at seriously.

Anyway if Sehwag goes down the order my XI will be
Rahane, Gambir, Kohli, Sachin, Sehwag, Pujara, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ohja, Zaheer, Ishanth.

else
Gambir, Sehwag, Kohli, Sachin, Badri, Pujara, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ohja, Zaheer, Ishanth
Badri- because I am not convinced by Raina as a test player and Rohit should be playing domestic cricket now.

Agree Pujara is well suited for no.3...I was thinking that Pujara just back from injury and trying to cement his place will be a bit insecure for a critical position, also Kohli has made the no.3 position his in ODI and has been beyond belief..maybe he can translate it to the tests.

Badri will be waterboy for sure...I know :(

Dhoni was quick to seize the opportunity to talk about Harbhajan Singh’s twin centuries when he was asked about New Zealand running India close on their last visit, in 2010. “The memories I have of that series is Harbhajan’s two centuries, definitely we will miss him,” said Dhoni. “We were in position from where we could have lost a Test match (at Ahmedabad); Harbhajan stood up and came up with back-to-back centuries when we needed them.

Brilliant catching, Viru-pa got some very good catches, Kohli as well. It is something we want to continue. It was important for Pujara as he was coming after an injury, he is someone used to playing big, long innings. He has a good temperament, he can play for long periods, and the stroke-makers can play around him."

I think India will go in with two seamers and two spinners. Pragyan Ojha offers great quality, but I'm surprised that Harbhajan Singh has been selected only for the Twenty20 squad. After you've picked up 406 wickets in 98 Tests, I don't think it's fair that you're sent back to domestic cricket to prove yourself. Maybe you can do that for a month or three, but he has been out of the fray for too long now.

Even if R Ashwin is the first-choice offspinner at the moment, I don't see why you can't play two. The intention should always be to field your best XI. If that includes two offies, so be it. We've done it before, in the days when Srinivas Venkataraghavan and Erapalli Prasanna played together.

Bedi still carries his grudge..should probably head our selection committee

Asked about whether Harbhajan Singh, discarded from the Indian team for over a year, could make a return to the Test team, Bedi replied in the negative. "Every cricketer has a shelf-life. One could stretch it if they're Sachin Tendulkar. But unfortunately Harbhajan is not Tendulkar. I don't think he has anything left in him to offer to Indian cricket," he said. "He has rendered fine service to Indian cricket over the last decade but his time is up now. I keep hearing that he snapped up three wickets and five-wicket hauls in county cricket. But what is the quality of teams, he's playing against? Has he set the county circuit ablaze?"

wizzy
28th August 2012, 11:33 PM
ED should check Gangs account for any miscellaneous fund transfers from UK ;-)

"You can call it my bias or love for Harbhajan but if in India you are picking three best spinners in the country, Harbhajan Singh's got to figure in that list. Harbhajan is one bowler who should be playing all three formats of the game," Ganguly said during the launch of ESPN Star Sports' event to announce their grand plans of covering the World T20 Championship in Sri Lanka.

"I still believe one year was a bit too long time to keep Harbhajan out of the Indian team. The board should have spoken to him and told him that 'look we are giving you six months time to sort out your bowling'."

"You can't keep a bowler like him in domestic cricket for too long. If you have played for the country for 12 years, you are bound to have one bad season. But he has got close to 700 international wickets which is no mean feat," said the man who has handled Harbhajan the best among all Indian captains.

The BCCI is set to amend an important clause of its memorandum of rules and regulations pertaining to the election of president, and has convened a Special General Meeting for this at Chennai on September 15.

"As per the existing rule, a president has to be from a particular zone whose turn it is by rotation to take over the presidentship. The change sought to be made at the SGM is that the future presidential candidate may belong to any of the five zones, but only needs to be proposed and seconded by the zone whose turn it is," BCCI sources said here

As per the rotation policy, Jaitley needs to wait till north zone's turn comes, as it is east zone's turn to take over the presidentship from incumbent N Srinivasan in 2014.

India v New Zealand, 2nd Test, Bangalore

Dhoni wants home pitches to turn more
Siddarth Ravindran in Bangalore
August 30, 2012

Over the past year, India may have had two of their most humiliating series defeats in England and Australia, but their recent home record remains respectable. A major factor in that has been the spin pair of R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha, who between them have taken 60 wickets in the previous four home Tests. Watching New Zealand's batsmen grope and prod at the spinning ball last week during the Hyderabad Test, you'd think the BCCI has decided to play to India's strength by preparing turning tracks. MS Dhoni, though, wasn't convinced the home surfaces are helpful enough to India's spinners.

"Frankly, we were expecting turning tracks, the last two wickets I don't see them as turning tracks," he said a day ahead of the Bangalore Test. "This wicket also doesn't look like a turning track. We have put our request through and after that whatever wickets are provided we'll have to play on them."

Despite Ashwin and Ojha dominating the Hyderabad Test, Dhoni urged curators to prepare tracks with more bite for the spinners. "You know the subcontinental speciality should be spin and I think we should stick to it. In the last match the spinners got lots of wickets but still I thought it was a hard-working wicket for them. Ashwin bowled brilliantly and Ojha had to keep it tight so I felt like if we can get a bit more spin and bit more bounce for the spinners it will be really good."

Much of India's home success in the 1990s had come using a three-spinner strategy, the most prominent trio being Anil Kumble, Venkatapathy Raju and Rajesh Chauhan. When asked whether India were pondering using that tactic in Bangalore, Dhoni scoffed, "Have you seen the wicket?" suggesting that he expected it to assist the quick bowlers.

While India rely heavily on spin, New Zealand are dependent on their fast bowlers, frequently deploying a four-quicks strategy in recent times. "I think they have a good bowling side especially on this kind of wicket and in overcast conditions they will come up with a good bowling plan and execute their plans well," Dhoni said. "Hyderabad was a bit different as there was not much for the pacers, still their fast bowlers got wickets."

That's one reason India were not complacent despite the all-too-easy victory in Hyderabad. "You don't need to be overconfident, that has never been the case with us," Dhoni said. "We are a side that respects the opponents whoever we are playing, wherever we are playing. Whatever we did right in the first Test, we will have to repeat everything."

Sachin tango long due

Sachin Tendulkar’s power of instant recollection has never been a secret. He remembers every Test dismissal of his – the bowler, the way he was outdone and the match. Long after he retires, try quizzing Tendulkar on who dismissed him in the last Test in Hyderabad. “Bowled by a certain Trent Boult,” he would say and maybe still admonish himself for the way he’d negotiated the ball.

Rarely is Tendulkar caught at the crease in this fashion. As the ball crashed his defence, Tendulkar crouched. When Tendulkar crouches like that, his fans cringe. It was a familiar sight in 2006.

We know how hard Tendulkar is on himself. An error provokes long hours at nets.

We are at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on the eve of the second Test. India are almost done with their warm-up session; the master is nowhere in sight. As they are about to head to the National Cricket Academy for the real nets, he makes an appearance. That dignified walk, the crust of brown hair, and a sticker-less bat in hand – it all scans well.

The football drills be damned; now there’s serious work to be done. After facing Umesh Yadav and the local bowlers, Tendulkar shifts to the bowling machine. Instructions are spelt out. The balls must land just a touch in front of good length. The aim, from the look of it, is to get his front foot movement right – his undoing against Boult in Hyderabad. Doesn’t end here, the deliveries are now being mixed up in order to keep him guessing.

At the adjoining nets, even as Virat Kohli and Virender Sehwag are elevating batting to some kind of a performance art, Tendulkar is working away zealously at one stroke.

Here, there’s talk about the wicket’s green tinge – New Zealand pace battery’s best chance to be counted. Why, MS Dhoni responded with a wry grin when asked if playing three spinners was an option, “Did you see the pitch? You think three seamers will work here?”While Tendulkar may have been mindful of the conditions, the intense net stint seems to be necessitated by a rather muzzled knock in Hyderabad.

It’s noticeable in recent times that the long breaks aren’t quite working for Tendulkar. He’d skipped the last tour of West Indies to be mentally fresh for Andrew Strauss and Co. The mind and feet just didn’t commune well in England.

Also, the Kiwis in India don’t seem to challenge his will as much. It was against New Zealand in the 1999 Ahmedabad Test that Tendulkar notched up his first double ton in Tests, but the last two occasions the Kiwis set foot in India, 2003 and 2010, he had a quiet series (by his standards).

But the man is above numbers; and as Dhoni said Tendulkar remains a victim of his own yardsticks. “He’s always been under pressure. If he scores a 45-50, people think he’s not getting runs. He’s enjoying himself which is very important. Be it at a practice session or on the field, he wants to improve,” said Dhoni about India’s one constant in an ever-changing batting generation.

Not Bad. Went there on Saturday with 2 other roommates. D Lower stand. We went in there at the morning at 9'o clock and we saw the last 2-3 wickets of NZ as well. Our side had bracewell and patel fielding on the boundary. Only 2/3 fours came our side during the Indian innings. Personally I wished I should have gone for a higher priced ticket. The facilities are :-|. We couldn't see any indian fielders/players closeby during NZ innings. I sat there for nearly 65 overs of Indian innings and I walked out when there was nearly 18 more overs in the day's play. Couldn't sit there any more. But my 2 other friends went and sat in D upper after some time.

Tendulkar's bowled was a disappointment. :face palm: Raina provided the crowd with some entertainment after Tendulkar's wicket. Shewag basically just threw it away when he had the momentum. We and the crowd were expecting Raina's 50 but he took 15+ balls to get a single run. Our section of the crowd were constantly calling Patel'a and brace, bracewell when they were fielding. Not a bad day.

The last time I went to Chinnaswamy, Sachin got his 120 vs England. Liked it but enna irunthaalum Chepauk Chepauk thaan.....Guess in this innings, Chinnaswamy will become SRT's most successful ground in tests

Chinnasamy ground is a hack. Chepauk ground has a lot of awesome performances from him(136, 126, 103* and 155). It is the most favorite ground for Tendulkar followed by Sydney cricket ground in Australia.

Dhoni on playing CSK Raina..is this guy for real

"It's important to have a left-hander at six or seven. This series [Daniel] Vettori wasn't playing but if a left-hander is there, the mix becomes ideal. Gambhir is at the top of the tree and then you have a fair number of right-handers. Then it's useful if you have a left-hander at six if the wicket is turning. But that doesn't guarantee anyone a place in the Test side."
