1. Kamal 80s ordinary movies - QED as far as I am concerned. Not just Sattam. See Vvazhve maayam at the end of title song. Siridevi kovichukinu poga sollO maadipadi OramA vandhu oru "mixed emotion" look vuduvaaru. ArtificalO artificial. Kamal in 80s ordinary movies - don't start me on it.anban will kill me.
2. Rajini is the only actor among all mass heroes and mass hero wannabes in Tamil film continuum. I don't like 6 to 60 but look at how he handled ordinary moments there. Grouch can write more. As NT would have done it. Call him a NT clone yeah if you want. Nothing to be ashamed about that.
3. Kamal the writer/director - greater talent than Kamal the actor. But yeah the star Kamal was required to make sure the director Kamal had a market. To that extent, I see the 80s as investment.
4. He is a bloody good actor. Trumps most other competitors on that aspect despite acting being his second string in the bow.
4. I rejeet stunt and dance talent so yeah, P-R's passionate arguments for 80s Kamal along those lines is rejetted.
5. Rajini after Thalabadhi is thoroughly wasted
5. It is long term memory loss to evaluate Rajini based on past 20 years. Just think Jeeva@30 years vs Rajini*30 years. No contest, even if you ignore Rajini's output post his 30 years of age. Heck, idhellaam naan En explicitA sollikittrukkEn?
7. Frabhu deva dance - sori sirangu soridhal, pant zip kazhatti moodal, sattai thiRandhu moodal, discrete movements - bhava bayaharam. Thank God I don't have much respect for dance as an art. If he is the standard against which Kamal is poor dancer, lacks grace etc, you guys should take it easy. You don't want to call Kamal good according to those standards.

.

I certainly don't agree this. Kamal is a great creator but Kamal is a great actor too. Look at all his sincere performances and how would you rate him in Indian cinema and as well as world cinema and tell me how would you rate him there. And also look at all his creations and how would you rate them in indian and world cinema. I still think Kamal as an actor has edge over Kamal as creator.
Moreover Dance, Action and Comedy is also part of the art. You may reject but it should be considered while considering the talent. Because it certainly entertains the audience.

Latter day 'concept' based fights are (rightly) remembered: the blade-fight in Nammavar, Thevar magan silambam, toilet fight in MMKR (French fencer post ) ..why even the umbrella fight in Anbe Sivam (which is not that good IMO).

But you really need to see the 80s films to see how much better he is. He generally has longer sequences without cuts. He takes lesser help from quick-cut-editing (not that that's a bad thing, but you kinda feel the overall punch is not there - early 90s Vijayakanth fights vs. post 2000 which is pretty much all gimmicks).

You can see Kamal channeling a lot of martial arts aesthetics. Some of them can't even be attributed to stuntmasters. For instance in the fight right after singAri sarakku in kAkki chattai : Kamal punches a guy, while he gasps for breath, a tired Kamal wipes his face, and then punches him again

And it would appear all in one quick flow. indha maadhiri paRpala chinna chinna vishayangaL.

There is no wonder you write well because you are such a big fan of Cinema(not any specific genre but all genres)

have always wondered abt Rajini's contribution to a given film, besides his trademark charisma-pulling-crowds ?

MGR am told was part of the music/song composition, choice of lyrics, screenplay etc etc - of course, his care/concern in keeping himself in shape is legendary!
the last factor probably helped in bringing in the 'pathhu gundars adithhy veezhthum believability' factor!

Its really staggering to see people actualy *invent* something to put Rajini below MGR. MGR and screenplay? Did he write a Roshomon? Songs, well TFM has always been blessed (pre-00s) with phenomenal music talent. Lyrics, seriously? Compare with what KD wrote for Sivaji films. And stunts? As Grouch put it, its not circus, its cinema for God's sakes. You need to *act*. He had two stock expressions, one for songs and one for stunts.

+1. MGR's history as a cinema artist is being rewritten desperately. And also this thing about MGR songs being great - never understood that. As you say, what KD wrote for NT stands way above any other in the history of tamil lyrics. Soaked in Life...as against phoney aRivurais from vAdhyAr.
BTW, recently saw thyaagam. In the climax, Thengai gets into a fight with villains an dsays this before involving in adidhadi
(He plays kovil battacharyaar in the movie)
"Enna iyeru kambai edukkaRAnnu pArkaRELA. idhai ellAM enakku yAru solli koduthA theriyumA? (pregnant pause, I am thinking a praise dialogue for NT's character will come here). "VAdhYAr. enga vAdhyAr" with a clear indication of who he is referring to.

Now, we have been discussing about Sivaji vs MGR in magnanimity an dinnocence stakes. Some MGR abhimaanis ELanMA asked Sivajikku vAila veral vechA kadikka theriyAdhA. Sure he wouldnt be that innocent. But surely, this is unprecedented. Praise of arch rival by an actor whom he had given a chance despite knowing that he is part of rival camp. And allowing that to remain in the final cut of the movie.

Contrast this with the man who chided vaali for writing Andavan Kattalai is bigger than Arasa kattalai.

It is clear who was putting up a show of magnanimity and who was truly magnanimous

Mohan Lal?

Let's leave alone dance & stunts. Has Lal got that much wider repertoire as Kamal in terms of sheer acting? Like Kamal can pull off a chappani as easily as he can a velu naicker or a Guna... Even in lighter roles, he can pull off a chaplin chellapa-isque "gimmicks" comedy as much as Shanmughi Mami's... He even made laugh by acting in silent mode in "pesum padam"...

I've not seen much Malayalam cinema... Hubbers with good knowledge on Malayalam cinema can talk to that since I know nothing about Lal... Just asking out of curiosity?

2. Spot on, 6 to 60 is a remba sAthArana movie in the mould of old Pa varisai/KSG films, poorly produced and directed. But Rajini shines. Not NT clone, but good student of NT School of Acting.
3. Soru pOttu valarthathu Kamal the actor. All his scripts can cater only Kamal the actor, note the word "cater". Kamal the actor < Kamal the writer <Kamal the director.
4. But of course.
4. Your taste.
5. Sad but true, though there were moments here and there (I liked Baba the best after Thalapathi, so sue me).
5. Absofrickinlutely.
7. While I loved it back then, he was the main reason for "_ukku dance varumA?" argument that keeps cropping up. Sad.

Action and dance????

Action - looks are deceiving.. he appears fat (he is fat).. but very flexible.. and does a lot of stunts without dupe..
Dance - not a trained dancer.. "modern" dancing even I don;t think he is good (infact looks funny)... but classical dance - he did great in Kamaladalam

Concur, Lal-ettan is a bit clumsy when it comes to action and dance. In fact, the other Mallu heroes seemed to be afflicted with that issue.

Lalettan has some flourishing business in the Trivandrum area and acting is not his fully-committed profession, per se! hence he is laid-back when it comes to honing his allround skills as an actor - however, he has that spontaneous, natural talent, which when exploited properly can give us a vanaprastham etc etc!

as for most mallu stars, guess they love their puttus + beef + aviyals + meen porichhadhu + rice so much that they simply dont have time for working out in the gym!

Kamal had to retain many of the Sivaji Ganesan era/style of overt histrionics keeping in mind that his audiences have already been pre-conditioned to such stuff - so chappani was brilliant and at the same time, the body language was just slightly overdone - or else, our makkals wud say "yenna nadikkavey illai ?"! there were understated acting patches under KB and also non-KB films leaving out the mindless masala films of the 1980s (that Kamal did as probably 'senjotru kadan')! but post Nayagan, Kamal became a different beast altogether - for instance, watch 'Sathya' - his reactions to his stepmom's insults, often without a single word spoken - i could perceive the hurt in Sathya's eyes! (IR's bgm took care of the rest!) - there is one particular scene where Sathya goes to meet his dad at his workplace and witnesses him being abused/insulted by his boss! and when his dad mentions abt Sathyas unemployed status and pleads to give some more time until his son gets a job, the camera pans on kamal's face for just a few seconds, and those expressive eyes do more than enough to convey a combination of guilt + helplessness + frustration + sadness!! wow! i dont recall any of Kamal's earlier movies pre-Nayagan having such subtle emotiveness in them!

Lal comes from a different school of acting, where over-the-top acting has never been in vogue - call it the culture, the region etc etc, but thats how things are over there in mallu land - his acting has been naturally understated right from the beginning - if Lal did a chappani, it would have been a very different take on the character that mallus cud have easily related to! of course, if Kamal were to have done a chappani post-Nayagan, it would have been different from the original chappani as well!

Raajjaa and Nerd - MGR came from an era where he was the sole dictator when it came to how he acted, how the screenplay shaped up, lyrics were designed for songs etc etc - he never had to be 'trained' under the watchful eyes of someone like KB ! he might have been ambitious as a commercially viable star, but thats abt it - i doubt if he had, at any point of time any serious intent/desire to push the envelope on the creative front - I would say that MGR designed/fashioned a major part of his entire career with the sole purpose of gaining foothold in politics and moving further on - but he did have an eye for talent around him - talent that not only could he exploit for his personal benefit (MSV-Kannadasan etc etc), he also had the same eye to recognize talent around him even when not of use to him - his accounts of openly narrating to Kamal abt how NT was a better actor and how he rated Kamal himself, are testimony to this

Rajini (and Kamal) should rightfully owe their acting training to KB - though Kamal also benefitted from his interactions with mallu land - am not privvy to his acting in mallu films but am sure they wud be far more understated than his acting in tamil films around the same time - Kamal is a natural in soaking up things, and made sure he kept his creative 'fire' stoked past 1990s - Rajini settled for the low-hanging fruit post-thalapathi and I would say even his pre-thalapathy films were all not equally impressive - he even admits the same in that KB interview as well as some TV channel post-Enthiran where he says he is not interested in anything artistic, only commercial gains interest him - 'namakku award aa mukkiyam ? reward thaan mukkiyam' - once someone had reached that stage of compromise, there is no way, any creative instincts can be kindled / nurtured ! maybe age did it to him, i donno!

my personal take: i used to love Rajini films as a kid (there is a hint there as to how/why he is successful - kids even now love his films - maybe he comes across as a larger screen version of those characters from TV aka Shakthiman, Giant robot etc!)- but past my 11 years, got tired of his gimmickry! even Kamal, if he did something in a film that reminded me of what he did earlier, it will bring an involuntary 'salippu' feeling! thats where he saved himself as a writer/'ghost'-director (though when I later came to know he has liberally suttufied from hollywood, that became a dampener).

Raajjaa - am not sure if you know this Rajini film from the late 1980s - forgot the name - Rajini gets shot and moves into a temple in a jungle, takes out the bullet with the tirusoolam (!!!), somewhere gets hold of a whisky bottle (whisky in a temple!), pours it over the wound burns it up, gives a few taps on the burnt part and walks away in style! the sheer audacity of the sequence left me gasping breathless! and then i laughed - 'you gotta be kidding - did i really see that happening ?' - but the point is people loved it and I see nothing wrong in Rajini riding on such an adulation ppl have for him !

on kamal vs lal

Somewhere kamals actings to me seems practised perfection where Lal is more natural.
Not so simplistic as to say that one is better than the other ..
Lal doesnt seem to try so hard to look/act very different.
Sometime you can feel its Lal acting but not the character but the way he acts those little expressions
is magic. He has an inbuilt appeal ,his acting is not laboured and the subtle changes are so appealing.

Mohanlal is a master of creating something where none exist..
In T.P.Balagopalan M.A ,mohalal has a scene where the money he saved dearly is spent by his sister for
her husband. His reaction in that scene where he shows his helplessness yet moves on after a moment
is magic.

Also watch his reaction in chota mubmai where the gal who rejected his proposal asks him later if he felt bad back when she did so.
His reaction to him as a happy go lucky guy is amazing..

There was nothing in the script for those scenes but he just lifts them with his acting which
comes out of nowhere. There are so many of them.

Also in ravanaprabhu as a oldman leaving his house ,he reminices all the good moments,
just his voice modulation without even looking at his acting is wow.

He is a master of voice modulation ,especially when he plays comedic and mature/older characters.
Very good when he plays a traditional malayalee like classical singer , feudal lord or sathyan
athnikad type middle class roles.

Lal has limitations where his body language changes dont seem to change as much as Kamal.
Kamal seems to do that stuff very well, his whole body language changes so much.
Lal has a very expressive face but doesnt seem to try as hard as Kamal to master all the elements
of a character potrayal like Kamal using everything around him to help him ,even the props.

In Malayalam , in most intense emotional Author backed roles like Amaram , mommooka seems to get it better.
Most middle class man with changes which unfold throughout the movie or the character grows
Lal is the best.
In that sense I feel Kamal's best roles are comparable to Mamooka's best

Usually Rajini has got this action-hero image about him, which I think is disproportionate. Rajini does a lot of 'cool' gimmicks but just pure stunt choreography he is nowhere near Kamal.

There is not enough appreciation of that.

And it would appear all in one quick flow. indha maadhiri paRpala chinna chinna vishayangaL.

there is another fight/stunt sequence in 'antha oru nimidam' where Kamal uses a gymnast's props for the stunt! remember either vikatan or kumudham mentioning/appreciating the same in their review of the film!

maybe SKV or someone can get hold of that youtube sequence and post it here!

and Rajini, despite his height, never gave an impression of someone in great shape, even when he played a cop!

have heard of Kamal's dedication to weight training/running etc

any inputs on what Rajini used to do (besides the kerala ayurveda stuff ?)

Lal and Rajini have a common skill "nakaichuvai" in their natural mode. Kamal on the other side creates a suitable funny character. Eg. Dr sunny in Manichitrathaazh. The way he mingles with family members(especially with that boy "gindi gindi" dialogue) of suresh gopi. I cant think about even a single film where kamal performs like that.

Yes, tonal consistency as an actor even in non-directed films(when he's invested) is his biggest strength. For KK, he'd uniformly role out the non-nonchalant playful tone. Thenali, he'd have to do a tragicomic tone through out, obviously the film itself didn't work for some, but you can't deny he abided by that one mode (not to be confused with 'method') that would operate the film. For MX, he's more of a spectator, as understated as you'd ever find. KH has done variety of styles, no wonder there are divided opinions over what kind of KH one would ideally prefer, what genre, his writing/direction, pre/post Nayagan, etc..etc

"aacha?aacha? Moocha aacha? Kaathundrkkomonno?" (throwback to Pushpak) - what's funny in the line per se? It's hilarity in the film :rotfl: (not about Kamal the actor here but I'm talking about his humor)
The entry itself maybe Chaplinesque but he takes it beyond that. He makes it Counbatore but not (just) by accent

Irir,

I've stopped writing (in depth) and (depth) reading long posts as a matter of choice. Not because of Anban, aatukutti or Chappani. But because it feels like work.

You're right though in saying that's why we've got Twitter. But Twitter is too much of a running train. Not compartmentalized for my benefit.

This is a compartmentalized forum, and extremely well organized. Maybe this introduction of anarchy would jeopardize it in the long run.

Mods might decide 'enough is enough' and pull the plug, but I'd continue to be in this mode for selfish reasons.

Thanks for the support.

Cinefan, download the app here -> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nikhil.activities&feature=search_result

Beware of the "Ungalukkaaga naan" over-volume torture, kambeni porupperkaathu!

Yes, he is kalaachified for his online activities, but ppl shud realize that online is just a branch of his work and the main stem/root is to coordinate effectively btw kamal and those who need kamal, for promotion, events, other cine/misc activities. What we, at the max, get to see is he doing "thallunga thallunga saar varraaru, jarugandi" but in the background he has to do lot of works and if any mishaps happens, he has to safegaurd the star. The link posted by P_R highlights some of his duties.

Following kamal, many others incl Rajini use Nikil as P_R( :rotfl:) oppicher and that shows some good-light about his efficiency! His job is mainly an offline one and thats why he is still not able to understand the taarchal his "Ungalukkaaga naan" gives to viewers who watch his videos

can you believe that this film ran for exactly 3 days in secunderabad/hyderabad ?? and I missed watching it coz of that ? and later on had to catch up with the tamil version !!

however, when the VCD/DVD versions were released, GUNA is one of the fastest selling movies in both Telugu and Tamil (Michael Madhan Kama Rajan is another) !

astounding film in every way - great writing (noone has ever infused mystical elements in a screenplay, characterisation etc etc the way Kamal has done in this film - i still wonder if he is just a very-well informed/educated agnostic, but definitely not an atheist!), stunning locations (the GUNA caves are agmark Kamal's patented discovery - my Karnataka friends who visit Kodaikanal tell me abt 'Kamal's GUNA caves' -))), cinematography (that continous shot in the first half hr, showing the sultan bazaar area in hyderabad is eye-popping stuff), stunt choreography (merging with the character and the story flow throughout the film, beginning with the temple theft scene, to, the badass stunts in kodaikanal), and of course, a virtuoso performance by everyone lead by Kamal!

IR - no words - the chemistry he shares with Kamal is best exemplified by the 'paartha vizhi' song - what a choice of a tune and rendition by KJY and the picturisation !

Janakaraj taking a bullet in his pinpuram is one of the most memorable scenes i have seen - that it must have been written as part of the screenplay show how busy the writer was!

No Suriya in Kamal's movie

There was a buzz that Suriya (http://www.orkut.co.in/Interstitial?u=http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/gallery/actor/4014.html&t=AH9y3rE_iJouZ-6fyHsdiAKgrTkqqoWmXhVF6BHPOhTLLepkcou6qJpV89btnA5J BcIcq4CgFTjFWubyjMexdr4Egu0z4qwcLwAAAAAAAAAA) would play a key role in Kamal Haasan's maiden venture in Hollywood, which is to be produced by Barrie Osborne of 'The Lord Of The Rings' trilogy fame.
However, circles close to Kamal have refuted it, saying that there were no such plans. "The news (thatSuriya (http://www.orkut.co.in/Interstitial?u=http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/gallery/actor/4014.html&t=AH9y3rE_iJouZ-6fyHsdiAKgrTkqqoWmXhVF6BHPOhTLLepkcou6qJpV89btnA5J BcIcq4CgFTjFWubyjMexdr4Egu0z4qwcLwAAAAAAAAAA) would be part of Kamal's Hollywood project) is a product of fertile imagination."
"It is going to be a single hero subject and Kamal will do it. And Kamal is yet to finalise the rest of the members of the cast and crew, as he is currently busy giving finishing touches to Viswaroopam."
Meanwhile, as we reported, 'Viswaroopam' is nearing completion and the first copy will be ready in the coming days. Produced by Raj Kamal Film International in association with PVP Cinema, the film is written, enacted and directed by Kamal.
