Shri S. S. Vasan

Subramaniam Srinivasan (10 March 1903 (official) – 26 August 1969), popularly known by his screen name S. S. Vasan, was an Indian journalist, writer, advertiser, film producer, director and business tycoon. He is the founder of the Tamil-language magazine Ananda Vikatan and the film production company Gemini Studios.
Vasan was born in Thiruthuraipoondi in the then Tanjore district but was forced to migrate to Madras following the death of his father at an early age. Vasan discontinued his studies before graduation and set up an advertising business. In 1928, Vasan purchased a struggling Tamil magazine Ananda Bodhini and renamed and re-launched it as Ananda Vikatan. Ananda Vikatan, consequently, emerged as the leading Tamil magazine in the then Madras Presidency.
Vasan entered the Tamil film industry in 1936 when his novel Sathi Leelavathi was made into a film. In 1940, he purchased the Motion Picture Producers Combine, a film studio and renamed it Gemini Studios. Gemini Studios made a number of successful Tamil and Hindi movies from 1940 to 1969, notable ones being Mangamma Sapatham, Miss Malini, Chandralekha, Vanjikkottai Valiban and Irumputhirai. Vasan also directed some of his later movies, the first being Chandralekha, which is considered by critics and film historians to be a milestone in Indian cinema. Vasav died in Madras on August 26, 1969 at the age of 65 or 66.
Vasan was an accomplished writer and translator and a hugely successful journalist. As a director, Vasan was known for his grandiose sets and innovative techniques that he introduced. Film historian Randor Guy hailed Vasan as the "Cecil B. De Mille of India".

Yes, Rajesh. K. Saarangapani was not only an actor, but was a real patriarch and a congressman. I still remember in 1963, when I was a school boy, Shri K. Sarangapani declared open Karnan Sivaji Rasigar Mandram (the film was under production, and it was custom for the MGR and Sivaji Mandrams to open a new mandram in the name of any of the films under production) and gave a speech on NT to the roaring applause from the big audience.

VIJAYALAKSHMI @ Silk Smitha

http://s3.amazonaws.com/rexee-video-snapshots/1262105556_252.jpg

02.12.1960 - 23.09.1996

Born Vijayalakshmi in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, Smitha left school after her fourth standard due to financial constraints. She became a film star by accident when she moved with her aunt to Madras. She was discovered by Indian director Vinu Chakravarthy at a flour mill. He renamed her Smitha and his wife taught her English, while she learned dancing from another teacher. After garnering much notice and acclaim with her first major role in the Tamil film Vandi Chakkaram, in 1979, Smitha assumed the name "Silk", after her character's name in the movie.
,,,, more at wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silk_Smitha)...

Her influence on the audience was unparallelled. Irrespective of the kinds of characters she portrayed, she enjoyed a mass following, which is proved by the fact that a film is exclusively titled "Silk Silk Silk". And no wonder her biography is now under production with Vidya Balan doing the character of Silk Smitha.

K. A. Thangavelu (Tamil:டணால் கே.எ தங்கவேலு) popularly known as "Danaal Thangavelu" was a Tamil film comedian popular in the 1950s to 1970s. Not known for physical, acrobatic comedy like his contemporaries J.P.Chandrababu and Nagesh, Thangavelu's humor is recognized for his impeccable timing in verbal agility and the characteristic twang of his delivery. He and M. Saroja formed a successful comedy pair, and his role as a phony writer Bhairavan in the movie Kalyana Parisu [Wedding Present]was much appreciated by Tamil movie fans. Thangavelu's humor enriched movies such as Thillana Mohanambal in his role as a nattuvangam master (dance choreographer) to the heroine. He died on September 28,1994.
