Movie of the Week

This topic is to discuss about a particular movie every week. I know there are multi threads but it's restricted to either actor/director. Here i want to discuss all kind of movies, direction, songs etc

To start with

Sabash Meena(1958).
Padmini Pictures Sabash meena had Nadigar Thilagam, Malini, SArojadevi,Chandrababu, Kuladeiva rajagopal, M.R.Santhanam, S.V.Rangarao and others.

Music by T.G.Lingappa
Produced & Directed by B.R.Panthulu himself.

Sabash meena is one of the best full length tamil comedy film ever made.
Shivaji is a fun loving youth who passes time in drama etc while his father wants him to take up the responsibilty but he is not interested. His father is worried and by this time his friend S.V.Rangarao also insists on his daughter(Sarojadevi)'s marriage with NT. So NT's father sends him to SVR and asks him to work in SVR's company as MD. Saddened Shivaji comes up with a plan. He swaps his identity with his best friend Chandrababu and the consequences lead to more fun.

T.G.Lingappa came up with stunning tunes.
Chithiram pesudhadi (2 versions , one by TMS & other by Soolamangalam rajalakshmi)
KAana inbam kanindhatheno by T.A.Moti & P.Susheela. Beautiful song and wonderful picturization.
Stage play by Sarojadevi & Chandrababu is fun to watch.

On the whole Sabash meena was a great entertainer and even today people copy this same story
and claim to be a new story with minor adjustments but this remains to be one of the best enjoyed movie.

Here is the online link to watch & enjoy this fun movie.

I posted this on NT's thread last week, but need to watch it in full:

Portions of Shabash Meena.

Funny that they screened this on our TV right after brother Joe recommended it to watch with wife a day before.

I caught only an hour in between. What a glorious piece of comedy. Sort of pre-cursor to Rajini's Thambikku Entha Ooru, and instead of taking up the challenge, NT runs away .

Some beautiful songs. Managed to catch Chittiram Peesuthadi, my favourite TMS ever (Don't be mislead by the serene song, but check out the chaos after it). And speaking of chaos, you (those who haven't watched it) thought Kaana Inbam is a relaxed piece walking in the park song? Check this out:

I am getting the DVD soon

Movie of the Week:

Malai kallan(1954).

Inspired by the Robin Hood movies of the West Pakshiraja studio came up with this classic. This was the mega hit for M.G.Ramachandran and elevated him to the Super Star status as well.

Story : V.Ramalingam Pillai
Screenplay & Dialouges by Kalaingar Karunanidhi
Music by S.M.Subbiah Naidu
Direction & Produced by Pakshi raja S. M. Sriramulu Naidu

Story is very simple. Malai kallan is good for good and bad for bad. He is the Indian version of Robin hood. Snatches from people who accumulate wealth by bad deeds and gives to the needed ones. He is the god for the entire hilly region.
Poongothai(banumathi ) daughter of a wealthy man gets kidnapped and all suspect Malai kallan to be the kidnapper.

There is another group which is behind the burglaries and puts the blame on Malai kallan. Police is in search of Malai kallan as well.

Great screen play, gripping story line and splendid narration on the screen makes Malai kallan a fabulous visual experience for the film lovers. MGR is everwhere right from the beginning till end. Banumathi as poongothai is added beauty. All others do their part well. M.G.Chakrapani as the Inspector and T.S.Durairaj as his assistant , fun to watch.

During my childhood in Madurai, whenever there is a screening of a film in an open groung it was always MGR’s movies and many times it was Malai kallan. Everytime I watched this it was fresh, new.

SMS’s music was Icing on the Cake. Ethanai kaalam than yematruvar by TMS took both MGR & TMS to great heights that they couldn’t come down even if they wanted to do. That was their Star Status after this Movie.

One of the Very successful movies of Pakshi Raja studios was Malai kallan, made in 7 languages as well. This movie received Central Govt’s Lotus Award as well.

Malai Kallan(1954) is absolute Winner and will be the best of MGR for ever .
