There is nothing inadequate or to complain about BGM only the movie/scenes didnt help much. I was about to reply to Mahen, If GVP has shown this level of maturity in Aadukalam he would have certainly won lot of accolades. At one place where it really reminds me of IR's stamp is in "Vizhigalil oru vaanavil" solo flute interlude.

I hear lot of good usage of Flute in GVP's score. Is that Naveen?

'sakkarakkattikku' is the weakest of the songs and I won't argue if someone says it got composed by the movie director himself :-)

 I think it resembles an early IR song, which goes

போக்கிரி பொண்ணுக்கு பங்குனி மாசம் கல்யாணம்
பாட்டுக் கச்சேரி
பொய்க் காலு குதிரையிலே ஊர்கோலம்

On the SPB-IR thread, the 1983 compilation is complete now!

38 hits in this combo in a single year  And many of them ensured extended runs of the movies as well! (People had to go to theatres to watch the video - no cabil / sat / youteeb)

Thanks. Any reco from Yuvan/Thaman other debutants?

This is exactly something I've been looking for

Scale, previously you asked for recommendations with relation to S. Thaman.

Part 1 / 2 - Here is my playlist of Thaman's Tamil songs in chronological order :

Ellamey ellamey - The singer, Naveen Mathav sounds very Rahman ji-ish. But TBH as daft as it sounds it's Thaman's own gibberish which instantly hooked me to this song.
Sindhanai Sei - Another racy song which doesn't take time to grow on you. After hearing this song I became a fan of Thaman the vocalist.
Adhigalai Pookkal - Awesome number by Thaman's wife Vardhani and Shankar Mahadevan. The track starts with subtle elecrtonica, then the carnatic touch prevails just before the rock influence is thrown in.
Gore Gore - Dubbed from Gore gore which is originally from Telugu movie Kick (The the first album I heard by Thaman, my pick from this album is Dheem tana by Chithra ji). Coming back to Gore gore the interludes which are high on orchestration is something which pushed my interest for Thaman's forthcoming albums.
Gramam Thedi - An out an out wacky number and it sounds like a Rahman ji number at places.
Then Mutham - This time round Thaman has been influenced by Harris Jayaraj sir. The oh oh part is why till date I keep revisiting this song.
.
.
.
.
.
.
The gap is there for a reason because I'd like to share, that the album which made me take Thaman seriously was Eeram. It only has four songs yet with every song Thaman's versatility sparkles with the emotion quotient rocketing. The day I heard this album the music of this album completely took over my system and I had feeling it will be on loop mode for weeks let alone days. I had an instinct that Thaman is capable of changing the music scene. That day I truly felt Thaman is surely tha man.. That day I posted many messages on numerous blogs wishing him all the best and stating that he surely is here to stay for a long time.

I was surprised to see this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lcZqFN3tM0

Part 2/2 My playlist of Thaman's Tamil songs

After Eeram, Sivappu Samy was his next album but sadly haven't heard the songs. Could someone please provide any links.

Next album to arrive was Mundhinam Paartheney and my picks were Manadhin Adiyil - another song which deserves high praise. The song displays beautiful craftsmanship over high school/teen sounding rock and carnatic genres. Definitely recommended. The other song from this album which impressed me the most was the title song - Thaman attempts jazz for the 1st time and not only scores musically but vocally too.

Pachai kili by Rahul Nambiar emphasizes Thamans grasp over folk songs.
Paniye - when this song was heard by the masses, most listeners felt that second interlude onwards the song got an Ilaiyaraaja’esque soundscape. This song grew on me due to word of mouth otherwise Pachai kili was the only song that impacted me from Ayyanar
Next to come was Thilangadi, remake of Kick. This album was joint with Yuvan Shankar Raja. Memmory Loss - Typical mass number with Qawwali touch, a first of a kind for Thaman. First song of Thaman and Kailash Kher. However IMO the best song of Thilangadi and Thaman's career in Kollywood is Idhayam Karaikirathe, a number that has been reused from the original Telugu movie. This again is sung by a his wife and truly is one of the most haunting songs of the last decade.
It's a short yet really powerful and extremely touching.
Puducha - again a Harris sounding song, the prelude is amazing
Thiki thiki - This time Thaman has pulled of a Yuvan Sound.
Yen peru - a retro-ish qawwali easy going qawwali with teen pop influences.
.
.
.
.
.
Then came the stellar album Mambattiyaan. The original had music by Ilaiyaraaja and I don't want to compare. But Thaman has definitely added his orchestration and given a new dimension to the already popular Chinna ponnu selai and Kattu vizhi. Along with Eeram I believe this is his finest work. All songs gargantuan and appealing but I have a special liking towards Yedho Aaghudae which again displays great influence drawn ifrom Rahman ji.

And from his latest albums I particularly enjoy Odu mamey, Ullam Thudikudha (YSR-ish). Somewhere down the line he sadly lost consistency due to deadlines for various projects but his Kanchana Mala from Vandhan Vendran once again delivered the punch he started with.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ALfC84uGi0

Great kuthu number with urumee beats and thaman's trademark orchestration running the song. A  for Karthik.

I didn't mention his Telugu material but doesn't mean I haven't been following it. I feel some of his Telugu songs are superior to his Tamil number. I am writing from a music POV only not taking lyrics into consideration.

NOTE: I know I've mentioned he sounds like other composers at places but this does not mean he has tried to copy their style. He has delivered his own style whilst taking us to the nostalgic realms of other composers while displaying his own mastery of music direction.

This technique of his has certainly inspired me.

Sunil,

I have asked only 2011 but you have listed entire discography. Thanks a lot. I have to dedicate the entire weekend break to listen to all these songs and revisit some. Its unfortunate having composed for more than 10 films still he haven't had a big hit. Hope he works with a better team/script.

Vr, Didn't we have better songs last year. Now the scenario is completely changed we have almost 15+ composers still the quality of songs seams to be slumping down. Sundar C Babu, Selvaganesh, James Vasanthan, Imman, Vijay Antony, Devi Sri Prasad and Thaman? had better songs last year. Still another quarter left we have to wait and see.

Listened to Mayakkam enna* songs not exactly what I am looking for but the songs will certainly appeal to the youngsters two Dhanush songs and Naresh Iyer's naan sonnadhum. I liked the photo click sound in voda voda nice prelude.. Pirai thedum was a letdown (the first song I checked). May be another listen will help.

*Like GVM, SR also seams to be pecking up old songs/movie phrase yaaradi nee mohini, aayirathil oruvan now Mayakkam enna (from the Vasantha Maaligai original song mayakkam enna... mounam enna ) . ME as a movie title is an incomplete phrase and feeling sounds very obtuse to hear. Lyrics ellam ezhuthuraangha oru padam title suyama yosikka maatraangha atleast try to fit the bill no....

Athu Oru Kalam - Athe Neram Athe Idam

I don't fully know why but this song has such a hold on me:
it's not really the lyrics or the movie (which reviews were a good enough deterrent) or even the novelty of hearing Premji singing
I do think it's due to
=the bgm...the violins/guitars/the folkish beat
=Haricharan's rendition, the wounded heartbroken emotion is obvious in his voice
=its tinges of VA's sublime "Ava Ena Thedi Thedi Vanthal Anjale"
that and a certain je n'ai sais quoi...

mudhan mudhalil pArththEn kAdhal vandhadhu - aaha. Whatay louly melody. Blatant lift from a Hindi song featuring Rishi Kapoor and the pretty Divya Bharathi, the lines escape me now. But Deva makes it better - I specially like the prelude violin sweeps, never fails to bring the mood up.

Even though I wanted Saicharan to win the title having shown lot of consistency in the past 1 1/2 years, with yesterday's performance, Satya Prakash stole the night. He was uber cool compared to sweating Sai (he was always under pressure, having done all the hard work in the past year) and performed brilliantly both the songs. Yes definitely his Omane Penne was way better than Sai's sangamam song. I was also not feeling good that he was pushed to third place behind Santhosh. Definitely he was the one who deserved the title just with yesterday's performance. Good that GVP acknowledged that Satyaprakash is his favorite singer. He has a great future.

Just imagine how Sai would have felt when he missed the final by 1/2 mark (definitely no one expected that). With that he has to give more than 10 brilliant performances in wild card round to again come back to final roaring. I think that's where he got most votes and hearts of the audience. Congratulations to Sai for coming back really strong from wild card (with 1/2 mark difference) and winning the title.

Vijay TV'oda politics ellaa suthamaa theriyaatha appaavi neenga'nu nallaa puriyuthu. Vijay TV decides the winner at the preliminary rounds itself. And they would do anything to make that person win the title. Anything includes targeting any other potential winners by discouraging them with negative comments, not letting those potential contestants sing challenging songs, production team would decide some kappi songs for such candidates and the coolie Judges would comment negatively on poor song selection etc.. etc Contestants cannot talk back and say the truth as the channel makes the contestants sign a legal agreement which states that "the contestant must be prepared to accept all waht the judges and channel say" (Agreement oru book aLavu irukkum. Ulagathula uLLa aththanai conditions'um adhula irukkum). And the finalists will have to sign another agreement with more tough conditions. Adhu sign paNNathukku appuRamthaan finals'la paadalaam. Judges are just paid coolies and I heard they get more than 2lack for every episode. Chance illaathatha singer'ku idhula nalla varumaanam. Channel solRatha appadiE perform paNrathuthaan avanga duty. Marks, voting, judges comments are all eye wash. idhayellaam uNmainnu ulagatha namba vekkiRathuthaan Vijay TV'in success. But now people have come to realise this and I got to know that the TRP had drastically dropped for Super Singer and that's why they wrapped up Season 3 within a year.

Even during the wild card Sai was not that great. Srini and Kaushi should have been there instead of Sai and Santhosh. Sai is technically good but he is definitely not a play back material. He hasnt got a voice for that. He is good for some classical kacheris and devotional songs. He also has not got that personality to become a successful stage performer.

Given the fact it was a live - opened stage (as opposed to a recording studio with all sort of technos and editing) performance I would rate this better than the original.I am sure Benny Dayal cannot do such a job on stage.

Even Alka remba kaevalam with nenjinilae.. Only Krishnamoorthy was a bit passable. Parvathy has got a solid and unique natural voice unlike Alka who tries to mimic the original singer. Alka is more a stage performer where as Parvathy is a solid play back material.

I agree...for me all the performances were not wow...not anything like how Alka's winning performance was like...but IMHO and each to his/her own....I second V_S with how awful it was to see Sai go from finals with just being half off...and he was really blossoming then...I'm glad he got the title...after his third try too...so yes it may be based on sentiment moreso than show of talent..but still you could see his improval with each round. Actually am still awed by his mallu song in other languages round...cannot for the life of me find that clip :(...if anyone can post here I will greatly be indebted to you!! :notworthy:

As for Satyaprakash it is so very obvious he is talented and obviously he will go places...it's just sometimes I don't know why his volume goes low and soft which gives a slurry type of effect...but sometimes it's really powerpacked...!

He sang it very recently during pre-finals round. I think two weeks ago. I have seen it. He was the best in that round. I am quite familiar with this song and it was a pleasant surprise to see someone singing. I think this is the first time this song has been chosen in such a competition. When SP started singing I told my folks at home that it will be difficult to pull it off as it is a tough song and also a duet. But his rendition was very impressive. Oru paanai sORu. And I also liked the way he immitated Nadiga Thilagam :)

The other song I heard was 'Malare Mounama' from Karna. You ask any VS fan this will be on their top list. I always thought this is one overrated song of VS that he intended to recreate Pudhu Vellai Malai. Also, Its not the tune, melody or singing but somehow I feel the amateurish BG synth sounds doesn't fit well and jarring at many places.

But I am very happy to notice all long how much VS have grown into a master melody maker be it tune, singing or orchestration.

As much as I dislike autotune, I'd take it rather than listening to Bhavatharini. She beats it hands down

What is the point of autotune? Can anyone explain?UDRS mAdhiri thEvai illAdha ANinnu ellOrukkum theriyudhu but MDs continue to use it - why? How do they think that the music listening public is easily cheated? Or, it is easily cheated anyway? Afterall, Kaaris has a flourishing career!

Lovely acoustic arrangement, minimalistic and organic. Shreya's entry in the song with a casually sliding bass guitar in the background is nothing short of awesomeness. Among my top favorite songs of 2010.

This is a masterpiece! Shenoy is so beautiful and haunting! Lovely!

The best part, however, is from 1.27 to 1.42 when three or more instruments come together. Especially the four seconds from 1.37. Wow!

A romantic song originally sung by the legendary singer Noorjehan, fused with Paluke Bangara, a very popular Carnatic composition from 17th century by Saint Bhadrachala Ramadas, where he pleads Rama to come and save him.
