Kick started the day with

"Chinna chinna muththu neerile" from ninaikka therindha maname.
Listening to the song in ear phones can cause you loose grip over surroundings. The stereophonic arrangement is delectable and pure jazz and blues delight. Beyond the coolness of the genre, Raaja adds delicate instrumental layers that accompany the landing of every sandham - so lyrically, every instrumentation layer complements the words in a collaborative fashion - as if saying "yes" or "punctuating the flow of lyrics. This is one of Raaja signature, not letting the lyrics be mouthed by the singer without any accompaniment, but rather creating a never ending conversation between words and music.
Awesome awesome song. This is my Raja song discovery of the year.

tharamarai kodi - SPB - Aandha kummi

Jaiganes,

need ur writings for this song .. pl.........

http://www.thiraipaadal.com/album.php?ALBID=ALBIRR00009&lang=en

Interesting.. I was thinking about this song yesterday...
There is another song whose tune and accompaniment orchestration is done in the same way - However that song never was a part of the movie - It is Sippikkul oru muththu pirandhadhu from Vikram. The raaga of the songs are the same and the constant refrain from the synth throughout the song is the same as thaamarai kodi.
Since it never was in the movie, we can leave that song and consider thaamarai kodi.
Here is the link to this song in youtube -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzJ14qY7Wkk
Now the idea is to present a song which is hero teasing heroine and heroine liking it inside, but pretending. This is as old as the hills kinda situation and it is where the enigma of Ilaiyaraaja comes to the fore. He has composed as if the hero and heroine are Kamal and Sridevi. It is that rich in its wealth of lead tune, bass melody, strings, counterpoints (interesting to hear a flute and soft electric guitar counterpoint in the second interlude). It has got what I would like to call a "Full Treatment" by the maestro. From the beginning "out of the world" prelude with guitars (not just one) to flutes - I have to make a mention about how Raaja arranges them. When the guitars and flute play a counterpoint along with some synth and harmonica, he knows it creates a distinct "sound" which will give a never before heard feel and he does that - What is amazing is, he has done that not by trial and error - it comes to him pre arranged in his mind. How could one conceive this - It beats me and that is why he is Maestro...
SPB is in his true self in this song. Sure the tune and arrangements must have inspired him. I wonder how he must be feeling about singing in the current generation. He, as a singer has no clue what instrument is going to accompany and what overall mood is going to be conveyed, must feel like a blind man walking on an alley. Here - Raaja has got the eyes opened, all the live orchestra guiding the singer, and so SPB eases into this song, managing to get that "chuckle" just at the right moment in the gap at the right punctuation. This song is a miracle. If someone comes to maestro with a similar situation, I doubt he would give such a treasure for he has become wiser. Amazing amazing song nevertheless. worthy of being in 1000 anyday...
Here TVS - I have obliged...

I know that someone has already posted MKT songs.
since yesterday, I am stuck with this gem

"Raajan Maharaajan Thiruveshtiyur mevum thiruvaaLan thyaagaraajan"
Enna oru veenai?
MKT - enna oru singing? If there was a heaven, it must be filled with the echoes of this legends voice.
This song has me in its grasp now - I donno when it will let me go. One thing for sure -- I am not going to let it go...

most of the songs mentioned are here I think except Poove ilaiya poove..
shankar ganesh's Megame megame was discussed and not allowed because it is a lift from a ghazal.

Roshan,

It is Vairamuthu and he used many of the programme names of Doordharshan in the lyric. Coming out in 1985, when satellite TVs had not invaded our households, this was interesting. The next two lines of the pallavi [coming after what is mentioned by Usha] would be great!

en jeevan paadudhu from "Nee dhaana andhakkuyil".
Very simple tune, lyrics are moving. For detractors like VM who keep saying that "instruments" are overpowering the words, This song from Raaja should be presented as a "case study". Agreed that language portion is conveyed by lyrics, but something surreal, and subtle can be even more effectively conveyed through music and Raaja does that with aplomb in this song. Each and every musical instrument, be it in the prelude or the interludes or the lines that run along with the singer singing aid in this and make the song that is reachable only to a "particular language audience" when viewed with the looking glass of lyrics to everyone with just ears and heart.
The throbbing of a rejected or "ignored" male in courtship is well brought out by lyrics, but lyrics convey the pain and to a point, even the magnitude, but is simply unable to recreate the swelling of heart that is usually found when a narration of such feelings by an affected person is speaking directly. These are usually areas reserved for "talkie" portion of a Shakespearean drama. When converted into a song it falls into its place perfectly in a movie of our times - only because Raaja creates punctuation of significant portions , a form of underscoring that adds on to what the lyric writer has supplied. I write this while thinking that this is Raaja trademark use of his "limitless" orchestral knowledge. Listen to the song and watch out for the violins repeating a brief flight - a crescendo right at the end of the either charanams.
Bear in mind that these violins have been silent throughout the charanams and from a pure orchestral perspective, they dont have to play a crescendo, but Raaja employs them for only the crescendo and to what effect? when their crescendo plays it so heightens the tension created by the singer and the beautiful verses as to make the song a pinnacle of songs of this genre. A fete no mere words with instruments playing a distant second fiddle can achieve and that is the power of Raaja compared to his contemporaries or rivals from any time frame.

Song is paniyum naane from movie panimalar.

The prelude is what usually catches me with the synth movements which were way too cool in 80s followed by a flight of violins heralding the singing breeze SPB breathing his honey voice to some really imaginative lyrics...

Jaiganes,
I am listening again to En Jeevan Paaduthu song continuously. As you said that crescendo/accent on that violin is a beauty. It comes from nowhere, gives the required tension and goes away suddenly. Definitely a song to die for!.
During the initial humming by Yesudas, two bass line (the first one more pronounced) notes are clearly heard in sync with the hum, and the third note is backed by the salangai satham. What a thinking! After the humming, is that a flute, which sounds exactly like a cry.
Another interesting thing I observed is the 'Udukkai' saththam in the interludes. In the first interlude, the Udukkai rhythm is short, but in the second interlude, the flute joins Udukkai, then slowly both fade away, and the percussion takes over at the exact time they vanish away. Percussion is heavier symbolizing the heart beats faster and louder. This clearly shows the pain the lover experiences from the initial pensive mood (udukkai & flute) causing heaviness in the heart (heavier percussion).

I don't know how Maestro was visualizing when he orchestrated this song, but this surely a master piece. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

the udukkai sound is something I had missed to write about.. Thanks for bringing it out. More than just being a clue to the emotional state, it also sets the context of a "rural" song. subtle, yet effective...

As it happens usually, the car comes to a stop in the office parking lot when the right song breezes into the ether. Usually, I unplug the mp3 player to play the song in the ears 10 mins later. But this time, I was rendered motionless, arrested so to speak. It was a sleepless night , last night - fighting cold in below freezing temperatures, the day break had not been pleasant and life had no cheer in the monochromatic snow filled landscape. The song changed it all. In a moment, I was transported to the warm and muggy sanctum of an Indian temple, chanting praises of the divine feminine as the snow inside melted away. Raaja took me by his hands, let his music vibrate within me...

"InnaruL tharum anna poorani"

When the song ended, eyes opened.
The harsh winter still gnarled at me, while my mind was flying somewhere near temples of Thamizh Naadu.

u keep nominating whatever u feel is a memorable thamizh song. We will do the rest (accepting, glorifying, writing words around it etc., etc.,) Is it a deal?

Fine by me.

My intention wasn't for you to pity me.

I started listening to tamil music properly during the mid-2000s, so not as experienced as other posters relating to this particular page.

My idea is to create a thread for songs that touch the being at some level. I would not be a happy man if someone puts in a "Vaadi en kappa kezhange" or "Anne anne sippayenne" or a "Take it easy oorvasi" here (as far as HJ and yuvan songs - my suggestion would be - please apply your mind.)

Since I've mentioned the time I started listening to tamil music, it is understandable that I can relate to westernised / up tempo songs which were being churned out at that time. This doesn't really reflect TFM in its true meaning and these songs might disobey your rules but "they touch me at a level" I cannot explain.

I conclude with Azhagiya Theeye from Minnale. I haven't picked this song out of thin air and have applied thought behind it so please don't question my taste and if you consider it a fruitless song then I think a few songs like this won't have a detrimental effect on your 1000 song list.

Sir, I think this song is by Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram. I remember reading an anecdote in a magazine (may be Devi) some time back. This song was written, when he first saw his would be wife, during the ponnu paarkkum padalam.

Speaking on PattukkOttai, the incident which paved the way for his debut proves his greatness beyond doubt. It makes for a really interesting read - from MSV's biography as quoted below from Dhool. Thanks

http://www.dhool.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4174

Both Kannadhasan and Maruthakasi worked on this movie's (Paasa Valai ) soundtrack, but for a particular song both the giants had trouble creating something appropriate. The recording was increasingly stressful for all involved when a week passed without any suitable lyrics for this particular situation.

During this time, a studio manager for Modern Theatres, Sulaiman pulled MSV aside and offered that a young poet has been asking for an opportunity to write for the situation. MSV berated Sulaiman, "When two mammoth talents are stumped with this complex sequence, what's a stranger going to achieve?" But the song remained unfinished for another couple of days. With mounting frustration and deadlines, MSV was losing his patience. Meanwhile, Sulaiman repeatedly reminded MSV about a certain new poet having already written the lyrics for the song. Finally, out of frustration MSV asked Sulaiman for the song just to put the matter to rest. With an utterly condescending attitude, MSV read the first few lines:

kutti aadu thappi vanthaa kuLLa naRikku sondham-
kuLLa naRi maattikittaa koRavanukku sondham-
thattuketta manithar kaNNil pattathellaam sondham-
sattappadi paakkapOnaa ettadithaan sondham-

MSV was floored upon reading these lines. Not only had the writer carved out the precise words for the situation needed, he had zeroed in on the exact angle and approach that MSV had hoped for the song. He read the entire song three times and loved it. He asked to see the young poet and congratulated him for a job well done. That young lyricist later became renowned as "PattukkOttai Kalyanasundaram" to the world. The rest, as they say, is history with the legendary PattukkOttai. MSV says this about his lyricists, "Kannadhaasanum Vaaliyum enadhiru kaNgaL, pattukkOttaiyO enadhu neRRikkaN".

On PattukkOttai, he would have been 81 years on 13th April 2011. Entered the field around 24 / 25 and passed away around 29. In a recent interview in Podhigai, Vaali recalled the period while he entered - "not Kannadasan, but PattukkOttai was the one who was on top". Hope his songs like தூங்காதே தம்பி தூங்காதே, சின்னப் பயலே சின்னப் பயலே சேதி கேளடா, திருடாதே பாப்பா திருடாதே, காடு வெளஞ்சென்ன மச்சான், were mentioned in this thread.

Good question :-) I think the song goes like மங்கலம் :-)

"iLampanith thuLi vizhum nEram; ilaikaLil makaranthak kOlam.." from Aaraathanai.

By IR - wow..the opening guitar bit and then the crescendo of the prelude with the violins...brilliant work by the Maestro..

Sung by Radhika Thilak (?) - she sounds / resembles like Jensey, which i suspect - is the reason why Raja chose her!

She has cute voice..too bad she never sung for TFm again (?)

Jus love this song for IR's isai chAral! mmm yummy!

awesome song . The charanams get me all choked up .. Some strange magic happens in this song in charanams.
Particularly when MGR sings "Ennai avaLe thaan arivaaL". Beyond the pulls of nostalgia, this is phenomenal song as far as effect is concerned, right from
the brisk violins in the starting to mellow backup in the charanams, a picture perfect song. TMS is in his usual self, singing like a man possessed, brings in all the
requisite emotions. MGR - what can one say about this man? ppl may make fun of his mannerisms and his movements in the song, but there is magic when this man
does things. There is an underlying sincerity which shines through it all. no unnecessary gimmicks and note the "shoeless" opening scene of this song!
Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy - Kavignar - this trio is the "irreplacable" trio in Thamizh film music scene... Marvellous outputs through the years and we are very
privileged (lucky is such a lame word..) to have talents like MSV, TKR and Kannadasan. They have enriched us in many ways, obvious and discrete.
I agree with pammalaar about the idiocy of central govt. awards when it is not having MSV as one of the receipients on roll, that too year after year..

This is a best duet by PS & LRE.
VAALI is at his best. He brings out the situation exactly in these lines.

I love the full LRE stanza where in KRV says "அலையில் மிதந்த மலர் கண்டு

what a way to say that it was sivaji who gave her life (at this point she will not know anything about NT-Padmini relationship)

Some more Mama songs .. yes KVM songs

1. Malargal Nanaindhana Paniyaale - from Idhaya kamalam. The Evergreen Unnai kaanadha kannum kannalla is a very popular one but Malargal is my all time fav. Honey soaked PS, eternal KD and mind blowing KVM make this song immortal

"Serndhu Magizndhu poradi thalai seevi mudithen neeradi kannathai paarthen munnadi patta kaayathai sonnadhu Kannadi" .. Yaar ange .. aayiram porkasugalai alli avarukku Abishegam seyyungal.. Kannadasan Deserves that.

http://www.mediafire.com/?xvamoxxetzf

2. Idhaya Veenai thoongum podhu from Iruvar ullam. Yet again KVM & KD does it and PS doing justice as always ..

"Manadhai veitha iraivan adhil ninaivai veithaane sila manidhargalai arindhu kollum arivai veithaane
Arivai veitha iraivan meni azhagai veithaane
azhagu kanda manidhan pennai adimai seithaane " very nicely told

nominating a female solo fromகுழந்தை இயேசு....

today tumbled down on a சுஷீலா solo செல்வமே தெய்வீக மலரே குழந்தை ஏசுவே....from an assorted Susheela hits, found out it is from the same movie as the யேசுதாஸ்'s ராகம் Bowli delight கண்ணே வா....
ஷ்யாம்'s delicate orchestration for ummaachi song is beautiful.

Whatever little I know, I find composer ஷ்யாம்'s bgm is always delicate, his melodies are ethereal, singers like S.P.B, Janu, KJY etc..have done magic in his music, I wonder why he didn't get to work in more Tamil films during his days.

12 b – Poove vai pesum

The whistle and harp prelude beget a happy go lucky and easy going sound which comes to a halt tranquilly, just before the ticking triangle drops making way for Mahalakshmi Iyer. Harris Jayaraj keeps the beat incomplex here by just using a clap and delayed kicks. However the pads in the background do create a scenic atmosphere. The orchestral driven first interlude arrives with humming and a wind effect which do full justice in attaining that fresh breezy season feel. Following the first interlude is the incorporation of a tabla to the beat which transforms the song as the song develops a ghazal like angle. The piano is a pleasant surprise in the chorus which is prior to the second interlude. The second interlude emphasizes the whistle heard in the prelude. This time the whistle is woven beautifully by Harris Jayaraj as it has a choir backdrop which complements the whistle wonderfully. The closing chorus has interspaced humming which merges with which I believe is a tremolo on a violin. Even though Harish Ragavendra has a limited appearance, he does leave an impact. Harris Jayaraj's melody in this song would anytime drop a tear or two as well as melt anyone’s heart. But the real scene stealer is Mahalakshmi Iyer who proves her singing range here and brings HJs melody to life.

One of my favorite film and songs. Nostalgic feeling about this film. We use to go to our grandmother's house for vacation just like every other kid. At those times, we didn't have TV at our grandmother's house. That too, Amma side grandmother is very special. Our neighbor use to shift their TV (and increase the volume too), to face our home window. We used to gather in one room and watch this film through the window. Many films we have watched liked this. Great doordharshan days and moments!

All songs are memorable, but that time I didn't know who is the composer. Whenever I hear the songs or watch the film, I remember those beautiful days.
Anbil Malarntha roja, Enthan Ullam, Unnai Kann Theduthe, were very popular, but other songs were equally memorable, that title song by Ghantasala.

Dear rajeshkrv,

Thanks a lot for the rare gems!

'Singaara punnagai kannaara kandale' song from Makkal Thilagam's "Mahadevi(1957)" was written by Kaviyarasar Kannadhasan. Really a very haunting song!

Onemore soul-stirring song, 'Neela Vanna Kanna Vaada' rendered to perfection by R.Balasaraswathi Devi for Padmini from Nadigar Thilagam's "Mangayar Thilagam(1955)".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpPOLdThRec

Set to tune by Musical Genius S.Dakshinaamoorthy, this song is the unofficial 'thaalaattu paadal' for most of the tamils across the globe. The Great Poet A.Maruthakasi has penned the lyrics for this song.

Usha Sankar, Thanks!

rajeshkrv,

The screenplay & dialogues for "Mahadevi" was written by Kannadhasan. He was assisted in this by Playwright & Writer R.Ravindar, one of the close associate of Makkal Thilagam.

Mahadevi's story was based on a Marathi play, "Punya Prabhav" written by the Great Marathi Playwright & Writer R.G.Gadkari.

The Songs for "Mahadevi" were written by four lyricists - Kannadhasan, Pattukottai, Maruthakasi & Thanjai Ramaiah Das.

The Pattukottai number, "Kurukku Vazhiyil Vaazhvu Thaedidum Kuruttu Ulagamadaaa' is a very powerful one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfK1NLplswg

This song has a Viruththam, starting with 'Suuzhchiyile Suvaramaithu (சூழ்ச்சியிலே சுவரமைத்து)' - before the Pallavi 'Kurukku Vazhiyil' - which is not available in this video.

This is the only song Pattukottai wrote for this film.

Warm Wishes,
Pammalar.

Some bhakthi songs which are musically outstanding as well. Since 'Janani Janani' has already been mentioned, I will go with others.

1. 'Maruda Malai Mamayile' (Deivam). Music: Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan Lyrics: Kannadasan. What an amazing rendering by Madurai Somu. Lots of passion in his voice.

2. 'Tiruparkadalil'. (Swamy Ayyappa). Music: Devarajan Lyrics: Kannadasan. During the time when it was released I don't think there would have even been a single soul who hadn't heard this song. Based on ragam Bhairavi. Devarajan's masterpiece as far as Tamil movies are concerned.

3. 'Neelakadalin Orathil' (Annai Velankanni). Music: Devarajan Lyrics: Kannadasan Singers: TMS, Madhuri. A very delicate melody by Devarajan.

4. "Devan Thirusabhai Malargale'(Acchani): Music: Illayaraja Lyrics:? Singers:? I love this song. Lovely female duet.

5. 'Allah Allah' (Md Bin Tukhlaq): Music: MSV, Lyrics: Kannadasan, Singer: MSV. I don't need to say much about this song. Anyone from that era will remember it clearly and will not have a problem in including this in the _must hear_ list.

6. 'Sittamellam enakku sivamayame' (Tiruvarutselvar): Music : KVM, Lyrics: Kannadasan Singer: TMS. One of the best Sindhu Bhairavis you can find in film music. Wonderful singing by TMS

7. 'Kannan Vandhan ange kannan vandhan' (Ramu): Music: MSV, Lyrics: Kannadasan Singers: TMS and Seergazhi. Kannadasan's words, the film situation and his Kalyani soaked melody move me everytime I see this song.

8. "Arupadai Veedu Konda" (Kandan Karunai): Music: KVM, Lyrics: Kannadasan, Singer: Seergazhi. Definitely one of the best ragamalikas ever in Tamil film music. Added to it is the Kaviyarasar's ability to explain the complete sthala puranam in just a couple of lines!!!

9. "Yenai Aalum Mary Matha" (Missiamma): Music: S. Rajeshwar Rao, Lyrics: Ramiah Dass Singer: P.Leela. A melody which was heard throughout Tamilnadu, whatever be your religious affiliation!!! Is also enormously popular in Telugu Desam as well. Definite 'must hear' song

10. 'Tiuparam kunrathil nee sirithal' (Kandan Karunai): Music: KVM, Lyrics: Kannadasan, Singer: Susheela and Sulamangalam Rajalakshmi. Whatay melody!!! KVM was master in this aspect.

Hi Suresh,,

Can add the following too:

1. Thillai Ambala Nataraja Sezhumai Nadhane Paramesa _ Excellent TMS solo in Sowbakyavathi

2. Sinthanai Sei Maname - Well-known TMS solo in Ambigapathi (2) (1 was acted by MKTB in the 1930s and interestingly MD for both was G Ramanathan!)

3. Muruga Endradum Urugadha Manam - TMS solo in Athisaya Thirudan

4. Muthaithiru - TMS solo in Arunagirinadhar (tongue twister to the core and listen how well TMS has handled it. I would recommend this song to be memorised by all private Tamil TV channel hosts who murder the beautifuly language)

5. Aadhi andam Illa Arul Jothiye - Amazing TMS solo in Naane Raja

Many more are there.
