While Kannadhasan and Vali are quite well-known to the younger generation, there existed many more Kavignars whose contributions to film music cannot be denied. Some of thier songs are reappearances even today.

Hope that old timers will share thier knowledge on these personalities.

From Sangili Aanda Puram, a boy aged 6 or 7 had joined a drama troupe. In this drama troupe, there was a Tamil tutor (Vaathiaar) who taught drama and Tamil to the young charges. One day, at the stage, that boy from Sangili Aanda Puram was acting in the role of a young widow. And by carelessness on that day, he was wearing a blouse.

In that era, wearing blouse by widows was rather inappropriate according to societal norms. At the end of the scene, that Tamil tutor harshly caned the young boy; ‘Can you be so careless and unrealistic in your profession?’

Guess who was that young charge, who received such a beating? Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan. Who was that cane-loving tutor? Most respectful and admired elder and great poet, K.D.Santhanam

Kalyanasundaram-Sridhar combination hit the jackpot subsequently in the successful movie Kalyana Parisu [1959, Venus Pictures; again starring Gemini Ganesan]. As detailed above by director Sridhar’s reminiscences, PKS wrote 8 lyrics for this triangular love plot, and all of them became great hits. This movie had the optimal mix of tear-jerking scenes, tasteful songs and a parallel comedy track of husband-wife team K.A. Thangavelu- M. Saroja pair.

Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram
(1930-1959)

“Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram had died. Cannot believe it! Is he? That young guy who was only 29 years? Was he the one who died? Even in dream, believable events occur. Did this unbelievable event really occur? Only 25 months had passed since he got married! Five month old baby cannot even utter the word ‘Appa’ to him.

Had he taken a long sleep, leaving behind the baby and his young, naïve wife? What a travesty! Grim Reaper, what did you do?

Why you wished to drink the young blood of that poet and approached him? Where is the ever-smiling young face? Where are the two eyes that challenged the thoughts? Where is the great poet who welcomes us with a smile? Has he died? Won’t he return again? My writing hands and pen shake and fumble! The hand that’d write his glory has to announce his death.

Maruthakasi was the only lyricist who was considered as lyricist at that time because he was the one who wrote lyrics in perfect tamil
to vivasayi vivasayi in normal language as well. he could adapt both the styles with perfection.

Ennai vittu odi poga mudiyuma - i like his lyrical beauty in that.

His son Marutha barani is into dubbing/remake and his daughter in law is um(TV serial actress/dubbing artist) who used to act in films.. like sister to rajnikanth in naan mahan alla

Kambadasan, Ku Ma Balasubramaniam, Ku Sa Krishnamurthy, Alangudi Somu, Athmanathan, Thanjai Ramaiahdas, Seetharam (Dingiri Dingale song is his composition), Kothamangalam Subbu (author of the famous novel Thillana Mohanambal), Vindhan (a good short story writer encouraged by the great Kalki), Kalki himself (he has penned songs in Meera and some other films), to name a few others.
