Watching Sokkathangam in KTv for the umpteenth time. This is one my favourite movies of Captain

From then onwards, his film was released every year until 2004 = 25 years

no release in 2005

again he had releases in 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009.

If he could release virudhagiri in 2010 itself, it would be great.. :cool:

Expecting a positive response in few days.
I have pointed out that not much publicity is being done online and there are no news about the movie in non-tamil newspapers.

The Florida-based International Institute of Church Management (IICM) will confer an honorary doctorate on actor and DMDK president Vijayakanth for his services to the society.

According to Edward Inbanathan, who is associated with the institute, the doctorate will be presented to the ‘Captain’ at a function in Chennai on December 3. “IICM’s chief will take part in the event,” he said.

Headquartered in the United States, IICM’s key objective is to provide continuing education for pastors, evangelists, Bible teachers and Christian leaders. “We are happy to confer the doctorate on the Captain,” he said.

Meanwhile, songs of Vijayakanth’s forthcoming film ‘Virudhagiri’, which were launched a couple of days ago, have created waves among party workers with ‘Yezhaigalin Thozhan…’ and ‘Makkal Oru Puram…’ topping the list.

Latest on the remake is that director Ameer is being considered as the first choice to enact the role of Vijayakanth. Since the character demands a rough and tough personality, sources inform that SA Chandrashekar is quite confident that Ameer will surely fit the role with ease. Sattam Oru Iruttarai will be made according to the present situation with latest technologies.

CHENNAI: The International Institute of Church Management, Florida, USA, conferred a honorary doctorate on actor Vijayakanth on Friday.

Patriarch of the institute, John Williams, honoured Vijayakanth with the award for the service he had rendered to society. Accepting the award, Vijayakanth said that the award did not belong to him but to all his party workers who helped in serving the people of Tamil Nadu. He said he had been doing social service for the people even before he entered politics.

"All religions preach one important thing: love others and help the needy, which I have been doing for long time, now through my party," he said and added that it was this Dharma which guided him whenever he faced trouble in life.He also urged the gathering not to consider themselves as minorities.

"According to me there are only two caste rich and poor, I am for welfare of poor people," he said.SM Jayakumar, president of ACI Diocese, Chennai and Premalatha Vijayakanth participated.

The good old friendship between Captain and Ibrahim Ravuthar(IBR) seems to blossom again. IBR was spotted at the award of Honorary Doctorate function of Captain.

Yesterday(26.12.2010), I chanced upon a book in the permanent book fair at Government Muesuem @egmore. The book covered the life of many film celebrities including Captain. I didnt buy the book but read the chapter on Captain for about 45min completely. I remember certain interesting information from that. I will post about it later. Regarding IBR-Captain friendship, it was mentioned that they were thick friends right from when they were in their 9th standard!!!!

Worth reading again - VANCHINATHAN review

JUST THREE scenes for the second heroine (Sakshi) and a couple more for the main female lead (Ramya Krishnan). In no other action film have heroines been so clearly set aside as completely dispensable commodities. And you

cannot but congratulate director Shaji Kailash on the move. Because in a film where every scene focusses on the hero's noble pursuit of bringing offenders to book, a heroine, making an entry only for the duets and thereby proving a

hindrance to the smooth flow of the story, would surely slow down the momentum. Never does it take place in Roja Combines's ``Vanchinathan''.

Neither does comedy find room here. Again rightly so. The film rests solely on Vijayakanth who plays the title role. A role of an upright police officer that fits him like a glove. It is a dignified essay by the experienced actor. Yet it is

time he avoids the same kind of voice intonation in film after film. It is remarkable how the thick frame of his, turns absolutely agile in the stunt scenes.

Vanchinathan is a straightforward and intelligent police officer. He very well knows that the anti-social elements whom he arrests would easily escape through the loopholes in the Law. So he sees to it that they are wiped out and

always has plausible explanations for the culprits meeting their end. These sequences remind you of the Parthiban starrer `Abhimanyu' or Vijayakanth's own ``Vallarasu''. There is no mother, wife or child sentiment that comes in the

way of his actions. Only a sister, and sensibly, avenging her death is not the sole concern of Vanchinathan.

There are a whole of lot of people who cross Vanchinathan's path and each one is severely dealt with. Hence you have several small episodes with different actors in each, who hang in balance as separate unconnected characters.

Hence the story as a whole seems to lack cohesion.

From Prakash Raj to Nasser and from `Pyramid' Natarajan to Sreeman, there are many who make an arrogant entry only to be annihilated soon. Though disjointed, each segment is handled with clarity and concentration that there is

no room for any confusion.

Music is by Karthik Raja (two songs and neither impresses) while the re-recording is by Rajamani. Liyakath Ali Khan's story and screenplay are crisp and action-packed but he could have avoided the didactic overtones in

Vijayakanth's dialogue. `Delhi' Ganesh's portrayal is an effective one. Is Sakshi the wife, lover or colleague of the hero? Nobody knows and not even the director is bothered.

The climax, when the public punishes the corrupt politician, is a little too far-fetched. Also an officer with the integrity of Vanchinathan could well be a utopian creation. But Vijayakanth, knowing fully well the power a hero's words and

actions in cinema wield, tells the masses that corruption can and should be weeded out at any cost.

Such commitment deserves solid applause.

Vijayakanth typifies the superhuman hero with a heart of gold. Appreciably it is a very underplayed performance from the actor — not once does he give voice to his real-life political moves and misgivings. Lengthy monologues have

been given the go by. Thus Pattukottai Prabhakar's dialogue gains focus. Except for the final fight sequence, which defies all logic, it is a reasonably subtle presentation from Vijayakanth.

The straightforward, conscientious doctor Sabari Vasan (Vijayakanth) refuses to turn a blind eye to the corruption of employees in the Government hospitals. Also around are the regular villains, the unethical bureaucracy, the

fraudulent police force and the land mafia which crosses Sabari's path. So goes the rough and tumble ...

For a change, Vijayakanth bids goodbye to garishly coloured costume.

Vijayakanth plays a cop in `Paerarasu.' Paired with him is Damini, a debutant. The industry buzz is that `Paerarasu' will make as much an impact as `Vallarasu,' which again had Vijayakanth playing a police officer.

This is one of those films that should’ve rightly gone to Sarath Kumar, as a black cat assigned to protect Chief Minister Vijay Kumar. A film that should’ve gone to Vijayakanth, peace lover, who ‘soots’ the whole episode, chases the bad guys and tries to save a moron child that’s stupid enough to run into traffic unable to find her mother.

Unfortunately, a damn good Tamil padam narrative has been utterly wasted in Hollywood by the likes of Dennis Quaid (who steals a role written for Sarath), William Hurt (who does that to Vijay Kumar) and Forest Whitaker (okay, maybe Captain wouldn’t have worn shorts).[/tscii:22a4da075e]

Actually Vijayakanth approached me for a story. But I felt that it would be better if I scripted and directed my own story. And that's when they asked me to take up the direction for "Sokka Thangam", produced by GV Films.

Surely he must have made compromises in his script and direction to suit Vijayakanth's image...

It was a tricky situation. If too much of the Bhagyaraj style of storytelling or acting came out, the audience could miss Vijayakanth's way of performing and vice versa. So I was careful to strike a balance... "

About the film's commercial aspect ...

"Sokka Thangam" definitely did not hurt the producer. Thirteen prints for South Arcot alone and each individually did 50 days business. This is just an example. There were times in the past when wrong media information about my films used to upset me... " Even as Bhagyaraj pauses, you get his point. "Don't kill a film even at birth. If it's not good, people will shun it in a matter of just a week. So why write factually incorrect stuff and spoil its future even at the outset, is his query.

In Tamil, I have done a couple of films which were remakes of my Malayalam hits. “Friends” was made into Tamil bearing the same title, while “Chronic Bachelor” was made as “Engal Anna” with Vijayakanth in the lead. Both earned a good name for me.

‘Arasangam’ may well be a sleeper hit that has restored his glory at the box office but Vijayakanth simply hasn’t found the time to watch the film himself. Captain needn’t worry. The film is likely to stay on for a few weeks.

“I only saw the rushes while dubbing. It’s come out well. And it’s doing good. The distributors have already made their money,” he says, like it was no big deal. :clap: :clap:

“It would’ve been a bigger hit if I had the time to promote the film properly but I’ve been busy with my political appointments and I’m trying to fit everything into a day.”

“Terrorism is a product of unemployment, corruption and poverty,” says Vijayakanth. “The forces at work exploit this situation to involve the country’s youth. It needs to be controlled.”

But Captain does not believe in using cinema to further his political ambitions. “That would be propaganda and films with political messages will put the distributors at risk. I cannot do that,” he says. :wink: :mrgreen:

“When ‘Ulagam Suttrum Vaaliban’ released, it ran into problems. There was a lot of pressure from the Censors, the distributors and other parties,” explains Captain.

‘Arasangam’ does not have any punch-lines and though you may miss out on the “If electricity touches Narasimha, the current will get the shock” kind of dialogue, it still wears the Captain charm.

“What I feel and tell my directors, sometimes, is incorporated in the film. I do not ask them to do it. But cinema is the platform to spread a good message to the people.”

Captain’s probably played a cop in more films than any Hollywood action hero. “But there has to be variety. That’s why this time I am a criminologist fighting terrorism.”

How does he feel about comparisons with MGR and Superstar? “MGR is my ‘manasika guru’ and I follow his path. Since I also have his advisors, they see we have the same thoughts for people. And Rajnikant… I don’t talk about him and he doesn’t talk about me. We have never interfered with each other’s business.”

He’s keen not to mix cinema with politics. :P Or even politics within the industry. “Market forces will dictate how much a star can charge for his work. Let the work speak.” :yes:

டிராபிக் ஜாமில் சிக்கிய விஜயகாந்த் வாகனம் : சேலம் வீராசாமி புதூரில் நேற்று தே.மு.தி.க., மாநாடு நடந்தது. மாலை 4 மணிக்கு மாநாடு துவங்கும் என, அறிவிக்கப்பட்டது. மதியம் 1 மணி முதல் கட்சி தொண்டர்கள் குவியத் தொடங்கினர். விஜயகாந்த் கட்சிக் கொடியை ஏற்றி விட்டு, சேலத்தில் உள்ள தனியார் ஓட்டலுக்கு சென்று ஓய்வெடுத்தார். மாலை 4 முதல் 6 மணி வரை ராகுகாலம் என்பதால், 6.15 மணிக்கு ஓட்டலில் இருந்து கிளம்பினார். சீலநாயக்கன்பட்டியை கடந்து சென்றபோது, கடும் போக்குவரத்து நெரிசல் ஏற்பட்டது. மாநாட்டுக்கு வந்த வாகனங்கள் ஆங்காங்கே நிறுத்தப்பட்டிருந்ததால், அவ்வழியாக சென்ற அரசு பஸ்கள் நெரிசலில் சிக்கி நின்றன. மாநாட்டு மேடைக்கு புறப்பட்டு வந்த விஜயகாந்த் வாகனமும் அதில் சிக்கிக் கொண்டது. டிராபிக்கை போலீசார் சரி செய்தனர். 20 நிமிட தாமதத்துக்குப் பின் அவர் மேடையை சென்றடைந்தார்.

Saw three of the four parts (wonder how long was the actual show, including waiting for the VIPs). BR was all over the place. Vara vara intha praise-fest tolla taanggamudiyala. Captain was nowhere in sight, as was Kamal. Both are probably at home, comfortable, and snickering gladly that they didn't have to go through that torture.

Cameraman K Bubathy is one content man. After having done just two films with him, Captain Vijayakanth chose to work with him in his directorial debut, Viruthagiri.

"I've done Narasimha and Thavasi with Vijayakanth. He said he liked the way I handled the camera for an action entertainer and a family drama, and he gave me the opportunity to work in his directorial venture," he says.

Viruthagiri is an action entertainer and Bubathy says he enjoyed every minute of the shoot. "I specifically enjoyed working on a chase sequence we shot in Bangkok. The scene involved 10 cars and we were following the cars at a speed of 120 kmph. We didn't get a chance to relax even for a fraction of a second. But it was worth the effort when Vijayakanth praised me after seeing the rushes," he says.

The director is all praise for Captain. "He sees every action film that releases. He told me that Jackie Chan movies inspire him a lot. He keeps himself updated on what's happening in world cinema," he informs. :P

Sorry for absconding from the hub for quite a long time!

ok coming to the matter straight.
No one has posted about their personal views about the DMDK salem congregation that was a "blockbuster" hit!!

And now to my views...
I should truthfully say that I have not watched the DMDK congregation live programme in Captain TV. And I feel ashamed to say so,as many many many of my colleagues, who were not even DMDK sympathisers watched it and said it was a "நெத்தியடி" :thumbsup: They even went to the extent of saying that Captain would definitely make it to the CM's chair in future....This they said seriously and I could see the truth in their eyes.

My inability to watch the programme was due mixed reasons. It could be attributed to the fact that I couldnt snatch the tv remote from my family members who were engrossed in D40(sun tv), as well as my personal work.

Those who were in the same boat as I was, worry not!

“After the party conference at Salem last week, Captain has become an inevitable force in TN political arena. He is now busy with the final round of alliance talks after which he would kickstart the election campaign. So there is no time for him to start a new movie,” they maintain.

Meanwhile, Viayakanth has challenged Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi saying he would contest in the same constituency as the DMK supremo. “If need be, I will contest against the Chief Minister himself,” the actor-politician said.

How would one explain the feeling of watching something in Tamizh film format, what one has already seen coming from Hollywood decades ago. From Connery's The Terrorists, to those Airport movies, to Executive Decision, and a few others I am not bothered to remember back to 90s, up to Jodie Fosters recent. How convenient it is for us to stitch all the plot together, mish mash of everything, because its either cheaper now to do those kinda movies or they can come up with bigger money, lump them together, and finally wait for reviewers say, "this can give Hollywood a run for the money" when actually they should say, "this should give Hollywood 25 years ago a run for its money".

Having said that, am looking forward to watching it :wink:

How would one explain the feeling of watching something in Tamizh film format, what one has already seen coming from Hollywood decades ago. From Connery's The Terrorists, to those Airport movies, to Executive Decision, and a few others I am not bothered to remember back to 90s, up to Jodie Fosters recent. How convenient it is for us to stitch all the plot together, mish mash of everything, because its either cheaper now to do those kinda movies or they can come up with bigger money, lump them together, and finally wait for reviewers say, "this can give Hollywood a run for the money" when actually they should say, "this should give Hollywood 25 years ago a run for its money".

‘உங்களை யாரிடமும் அடகு வைக்க மாட்டேன்’ என்று தன் தொண்டர்களிடம் தே.மு.தி.க. தலைவர் சேலம் மாநாட்டில் சூளுரைத்து உள்ளார். அதாவது யாரிடமும் கூட்டணி சேர மாட்டேன் என்று கூறுகிறார் தலைவர் என்று தொண்டர்கள் அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்தாலும், ‘கூட்டணி தேவை என்போர் கையை உயர்த்துங்கள்’ என்று கூற, ஒட்டுமொத்த தொண்டர்களும் கையை உயர்த்தி விட்டனர்.

‘இனியும் உங்கள் சால்ஜாப்பு பலிக்காது தலைவா, தனியாக நின்று நாங்கள் இழந்தது போதும்’ என்ற மனநிலைக்கு வந்துவிட்டார்கள் விஜயகாந்த் ரசிகர்கள். கடந்த சட்டமன்றத் தேர்தலிலும், நாடாளுமன்றத் தேர்தலிலும் தனித்து போட்டியிட்டு தான் ஒருவர் மட்டுமே வென்றால் போதும், வரவேண்டிய இடத்திலிருந்து வரவேண்டியது வந்தால் போதும் என்ற நினைப்பு விஜயகாந்துக்கு. இந்தத் தேர்தலிலும் அதே வேலையைக் காட்டலாம் என்று நினைத்தாலும், ‘நீ எங்களை அடகு வைத்தாலும் பரவாயில்லை, நாங்கள் கட்சிக்காக அடகு வைத்த நகைகளை மீட்க வேண்டும்’ என்று எரிமலையாய் நெஞ்சுக்குள் வெடிக்கிறார்கள் அப்பாவித் தொண்டர்கள். ‘விஜயகாந்தை கேப்டன் கேப்டன் என்று வாயாரப் புகழ்வார், கட்சி பத்திரிகையில் முக்கிய பொறுப்பில் இருக்கும் ஒருவர். இப்போதெல்லாம் விஜயகாந்த் ஒரு சுயநலவாதி, நாங்கள் எல்லாம் ஏமாந்து விட்டோம் என்று புலம்புகிறார்’ என்றார் பத்திரிகை நண்பர் ஒருவர். கடந்த சட்டமன்றத் தேர்தலின்போது, காங்கிரஸிடம் மிகப்பெரும் தொகையை வாங்கிக் கொண்டுதான் விஜயகாந்த் தனித்து நின்றாராம். அதனால்தான் தி.மு.க. வென்றது. இந்தத் தேர்தலிலும் அ.தி.மு.க.வோடு தொகுதி பங்கீட்டில் பிரச்சனை வந்துவிட்டது. நமக்குத் தன்மானம் தான் முக்கியம் என்று சொல்லி, மீண்டும் தனித்து நின்று, தி.மு.க.வை ஆட்சிக்கட்டிலில் அமர வைக்கப்போகிறார் எங்கள் தலைவர் என்று விஜயகாந்த் ரசிகர்களே வெளிப்படையாகப் பேசத் தொடங்கி விட்டனர்.

கலைஞர், ஜெயலலிதா போன்றவர்கள் ஓட்டுக்கு பணம் கொடுத்து பதவிக்கு வந்து, Vijayakanthவட்டியும் முதலுமாக அறுவடை செய்கின்றனர். வைகோ, ராமதாஸ் போன்றவர்கள் கடைசி வரை இந்த கட்சிகளுக்கு முட்டுக்கொடுத்தே முடிந்து விட்டனர். ஆனால் விஜயகாந்த் மட்டும் ஆட்சிக்கு வராமலேயே வாய்ச்சவடால் அடித்தே கோடிகளில் புரள்கிறார். அப்பாவி ரசிகர்கள்தான் நட்டாற்றில் நிற்கிறார்கள். ரஜினி எவ்வளவோ மேல். ‘வாய்ஸ்’ கொடுத்துவிட்டு ஐஸ்வர்யாரோடு ‘கிளிமாஞ்சாரோ’ பாடிவிட்டு பணம் சம்பாதிக்கிறார். ரசிகர்களுக்கு நல்ல படமாவது தருகிறார். ஆனால், ‘கேப்டன்’ கடைசிரை தான் மட்டுமே ‘பேட்டிங்’ செய்ய வேண்டும். ரசிகர்கள் ‘பீல்டர்களாகவே’ இருந்து வியர்வை சிந்த வேண்டும் என்று நினைக்கிறார்.

உண்மையிலேயே விஜயகாந்த் மக்களைப் பற்றிக் கவலைப்படுகிறவராக இருந்தால், தி.மு.க., அ.தி.மு.க.விற்கு மாற்று தான்தான் என்று நனைத்திருந்தால், இந்நேரம் மூன்றாவது அணிக்கு தலைமையேற்று இருப்பார். ஆனால் அதற்கு யார் பணம் தருவது? தனித்து நின்று ஓட்டை பிரித்தால்தானே பணம் வரும். இப்போதுதான் புரிகிறது எங்கள் தலைவர் முன்போல் ஏன் படம் தயாரிப்பதில்லை. நடிப்பதில்லை என்று. அவருக்குத்தான் அரசியலிலேயே நல்ல வருமானம் வருகிறதே என்று புலம்புகிறார் கேப்டனின் தீவிர ரசிகர்!

ஒன்று மட்டும் நிச்சயம். விஜயகாந்த் அ.தி.மு.க. கூட்டணியில் இணைந்தால் கட்சி தப்பிக்கும். அவர் தனித்து நின்றால் விஜயகாந்த் மட்டும் தப்பித்து விடுவார்.

We know that state govt. awards for kollywood are biased.

In the year 2000, Captain gave blockbusters Vallarasu and Vanathaipola. He was announced filmfare best actor award(though he didnt attend it and consequently Napoleon received it on his behalf). However the state govt. award for best actor went to his brother Murali for the movie Kadal Pookal that had won the national award before its release.
