The Pacific is based primarily on two memoirs of U.S. Marines, With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa by Eugene Sledge and Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie. The series will tell the stories of the two authors and Marine John Basilone, as the war against the Empire of Japan rages. It also draws on Sledge's China Marine[28] and Red Blood, Black Sand,[29] the memoir of Chuck Tatum, a Marine who fought alongside Basilone at Iwo Jima.

The series will feature well-known battles involving the 1st Marine Division, such as Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa, as well as Basilone's involvement in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Hugh Ambrose has authored the official tie-in book to the series, which follows the stories of the three men featured in the series as well as stories of their fellow Marines. It is set to publish in the US and UK in March 2010.

I saw the first episode on Sunday midnight. Actually I missed the telecast and I saw it on On-Demand. The first episode was good. The first episode starts 9 months after Pearl Harbor attack on Aug 1942. It tracks the lives of marines who were dropped into an island in the Pacific called the Guadalcanal to stop the Japanese from building an air-base with which they plan on to halt the american offensive and increase the Japanese offensive.

When the marines reach there they see that the other american soldiers are resting on the beach. Happy to see them they start their patrol into the interior of the island. They encounter dead marines there and in the night they are shocked to found their navy ships being bombed by the japanese and they are left with very no ammo-supplies and food until the next batch arrives which is doubtful.

In the Night they engage in an gun fight with the japanese and kill everybody and they play with a japanese soldier by not shooting him but by rather shooting around him. Enraged by this the guy starts yelling and the protoganist(James Budge Dale - One of the proteges of Frank Costello in The Departed shot by damon at the end) of this show shoots him to stop this ravage play.
