[tscii:5dfc14d64e]Enter Rahman exit Pritam

By Subhash K Jha
Posted On Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 04:30:41 AM

After composing chartbusting scores in Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal one would think music composer Pritam Chakraborty is an integral and indispensable part of Imtiaz’s cinema. Surprisingly, that’s not the case any longer, at least not as far as Imtiaz’s next film, Rock Star is concerned.

The emotional composer tried to hide his hurt as well as he could and said, “I haven’t been approached for Rock Star. I’ve heard that Rahman is doing it. Am I hurt about not being part of Imtiaz’s new film? I’ve been too busy to think about it. I’m sure we’ll work together again in the future.”

Although Imtiaz remained unavailable for comment it is no secret that the filmmaker is known to let his head and not his heart rule when it comes to deciding his cast and crew. For instance, despite creating magic with Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met he signed Deepika Padukone for Love Aaj Kal although Kareena, incidentally the film’s producer Saif Ali Khan’s lady-love, was very keen to be part of the film.

Kareena too couldn’t hide her hurt when she publicly admitted while receiving the best actress award for Jab We Met that she was upset with Imtiaz for not casting her in Love Aaj Kal. Even after Love Aaj Kal, Imtiaz chose Ranbir Kapoor over Saif Ali Khan in Rock Star although the latter had at one point been signed for it. Pritam’s exclusion is particularly surprising as he was known to be a close friend of Imtiaz.

According to reliable sources, the magical AR Rahman has already recorded two songs for Rock Star. While this fresh director-music composer jodi will be something to look forward to, those hoping to see Imtiaz and Pritam form a Nasir Hussain-RD Burman kind of director-composer team will surely be disappointed.

Rahman confirmed he’s composing music for Rock Star. “I will do it after I meet Imtiaz since one-fourth of the music is ready,” he said.

Ranbir-Rahman get jammin

The actor and the composer met at a music sitting session in Chennai

Ranbir Kapoor is a huge A R Rahman fan. Recently he got a chance to interact with the Oscar-winning music director and also attended a music session with him.

Ranbir was in Chennai with his Rockstar director Imitaz Ali who was meeting the maestro for a sitting. RK tagged along.

A source reveals, "The music of Rockstar will be a blend of uptempo and soulful tracks. Since Ranbir plays the title role, Imtiaz wanted him to attend the sitting and give inputs. But Ranbir, totally awestruck by the composer sat silent through out the session."

RK's first time

Rockstar will have six tracks composed by Rahman. As Ranbir has sung a song for Sajid Nadiadwala's Anjaana Anjaani, the composer teased him about turning crooner. The source adds, "This was the first time Ranbir attended a music sitting and he had a great time. He kept telling Rahman how much he loved his work and that he was thrilled to work with him for the first time."

This will be the first time Imtiaz will be working with a composer other than Pritam.

Producer: Eros International and Shri Ashtavinayak Cine Vision
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis
What it’s about: When Imtiaz Ali makes a film, you want to watch it. His films speak of life, love and truths in a very lighthearted way and that’s what makes audiences remember Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal so fondly. We assume Rockstar won’t be any different. Plus it has Ranbir Kapoor in the lead and that oh so beautiful find of the year Nargis. We can’t wait. Moreover, AR Rahman's music is reportedly his career's best yet!

Ranbir cancels world tour for Rahman

Asia’s sexiest chap Ranbir Kapoor has dropped his plans of world tour for the moment as his family members insisted for the change. Ranbir Kapoor was supposed to take on his world tour that was supposed to have hotties Katrina, Bipasha Basu and Mallika Arora shaking legs for their glistering item songs – ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’, ‘Beedi Jalalaile’ and ‘Munni Badnaam’. But later Ranbir and his family members desperately started looking out for his perfect identity that will make his stage performance more enchanting. Obviously with his upcoming movie Rockstar hitting the screens this year, Ranbir feels that performing these songs (musical score of A.R. Rahman) will gain more momentum.

Rockstar brings filmmaker Imtiaz Ali (Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal) with academy award winner A.R. Rahman for the first time.

Rahman has now completed background score for the film and audio will be launched next month. :happydance:

Rishi Kapoor said in an interview that, one cannot go on a world tour without a bank of songs in his bag. Ranbir’s upcoming film “Rockstar’ is about to release soon and Rishi Kapoor wants his son to get on the stage only after the songs are out, since there are a lot of good songs in the movie. A.R. Rahman has done the music for the movie and it would surely be a foolish thing to do, if they go up on the stage without his songs.

Good going Ranbir :D [/tscii:6bce387920]

I've heard some portions of the music from Rockstar because we were at his studio for rehearsals. Whatever I've heard, it was very nice and niche. I've heard some of Rahman's most unheard tunes several times. Rockstar will bring out the romantic side of A.R Rahman in a never before heard music. The album has mostly got songs sung by male playback singers.

Check Out: Shammi Kapoor on the sets of Rockstar

http://images.bollywoodhungama.com/img/feature/11/aug/shammi1.jpg

Bollywood legend Shammi Kapoor, who breathed his last on Sunday, August 14, will be seen in director Imtiaz Ali's upcoming film Rockstar. The actor, who passed away due to kidney failure actor, was on dialysis when he shot for the film in Delhi.

http://images.bollywoodhungama.com/img/feature/11/aug/shammi2.jpg

The film stars his grand-nephew Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. This will be the first and last time Ranbir shared screen space with his grand-uncle. Ranbir plays the role of a small-town boy dreaming of becoming a rockstar. The duo will be seen together in a 'jugalbandi' where Ranbir will be playing a guitar while Shammi will play a shenai. Shammi had earlier said that playing shenai had always been his passion and he was happy to show his skills in the film.

http://images.bollywoodhungama.com/img/feature/11/aug/shammi3.jpg

Imtiaz felt extremely fortunate to have Shammiji in his film. He says that Shammiji was the true "rockstar" on sets and everyone else including Ranbir were just his attendants.

Here are some pictures of the 'Yahooo' man, Shammi Kapoor, on the sets of Rockstar with director Imtiaz Ali, Ranbir Kapoor and the entire crew of the film.

The trailer of Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar has been attached with Salman Khan’s Bodyguard. From the looks of it, the promo is absolutely fantastic! Ranbir and Nargis Fakhri make a wonderful pair. From the promo, you can make out that the film has romance, music, high level drama, emotions and more. A. R. Rahman’s music is brilliant and the songs rock!

The track below is my first beat on Reason 5.0. I have experimented with Rock, Celtic, Indian and Hip hop music. I dedicate this beat to A. R. Rahman ji and hope one day he hears my music and to those reading this right now please hear this once, if you like it than thanks and if you don't then if you wish please do leave some constructive feedback.

Once again please don't be mistaken by the picture of the video, we Rahmaniacs are all waiting for the real music of Rockstar. I don't not own the rights to the picture and it is taken from Bollywood Hungama.

trailer shows traces of Imtiaz Ali's dialogue magic, character entanglements but the flashing cameras, public media gives the jitters - something that a simple director like Imtiaz is unknown for......the scene where a greying ranbir is gulping down alcohol like a drunkard does look very envelope pushing for Imtiaz, dunno how he is going to handle it, hope he doesent mess it up.........but its supposed to be the dream project of Imtiaz :D

btw, i could see ranbir's look in sadda haq similar to Che Guevara's look.......even thalaivar's composition of sadda haq is something like a fusion of sufism and rock music - im very circumspect as of now :D

Rahman reserves best for Imtiaz and Ranbir in Rockstar?

By Joginder Tuteja, September 10, 2011 - 14:30 IST

Click above for movie stills
Promos of Rockstar are on and while the film has generated all around positive vibes already, there are also good expectations from Imtiaz Ali to score a hat trick after Love Aaj Kal and Jab We Met with Ranbir Kapoor too delivering his biggest hit till date after Raajneeti and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani. However, in the middle of this all, the one factor that makes Rockstar a film it is, its music, isn't going unnoticed either. If insiders are to believed, A.R. Rahman has returned to his magical ways all over again with an elaborate soundtrack which should find itself high on the popularity quotient.

"Oscar winner Rahman has been giving all the attention to Rockstar as it a dramatic musical. The genre by itself is such that it is inspiring Rahman to deliver his best. After a lukewarm last year when none of his Bollywood soundtracks, namely Raavan, Jhootha Hi Sahi, Robot and Ada... A Way Of Life covered a long distance, Rahman's bets are pretty much placed on Ranbir Kapoor's Rockstar", says an insider.

Those who have heard the music of Rockstar claim that Rahman is back in mighty form with this one and delivered a soundtrack that brings with it a new sound, is extraordinary and should find acceptance from mass as well as class audiences.

"Not many are aware that Imtiaz and Rahman have enjoyed an association over Rockstar way before Ranbir stepped into the film. The film was earlier supposed to be made with John Abraham and Imtiaz had already started collaboration with Rahman. This was much before Love Aaj Kal happened with Saif Ali Khan. However, due to certain reasons Rockstar couldn't take off with John but Imtiaz and Rahman bonded big time. They formed a pact that whenever Rockstar would be made again, Rahman would score for the film", the source continues.

This is the reason why even though Pritam composed for Imtiaz's Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal and delivered a chartbuster score for both the films, it was Rahman who was back in action when it came to the filmmaker's biggest film till date.

"Rahman went ahead and composed fresh music for Rockstar to go with today's time. It has been a long time since he composed for an out and out musical. In fact this is 12 years after Taal that he is working on a Hindi film where the basic theme, subject and storyline revolves around music. Now everyone knows how big a success Taal was. One hopes that Rockstar is even bigger", says an insider.

Well, we hope so too. Though Imtiaz Ali was unavailable for comment, news is that he would be unveiling the music soon in an innovative manner.

I really hope Mohit Chauhan gets an award for best singer for the Phir se udh chala song. Sadda Haq has already become an anthem and that too before its release.

Lately been listening to so many various Mohit Chauhan songs and I know I shouldn't be posting it here but this song about hill stations in Himachal Pradesh is just irresistible.

Rockstar music launch at Dargah
Director Imtiaz Ali often frequented the Nizamuddin Dargah during the shooting of his next, " Rockstar", that stars Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri. We had reported earlier that he had shot a qawwali sequence at the dargah.

And that's not the only connect the dargah has with the film - Ranbir's grandfather Raj Kapoor was a frequent visitor and would often bring his films' reels to the Sufi saint's shrine. Ranbir too, stayed there for a couple of days while shooting for the qawwali scene in the film. AR Rahman (the film's music director) has often expressed his reverence for the place, and Imtiaz is a regular.

During the Ganpati visarjan in Mumbai a few days ago, Imtiaz Ali had placed a copy of the film's music CD at the feet of the Ganesha idol at RK Studios in Chembur. Now, DT has learnt that the director has decided to release the music of "Rockstar" at Nizamuddin Dargah for an auspicious beginning.

The launch will probably be towards the end of this month, after the end of the Urs Mahotsav, and will be a night event. Imtiaz will be accompanied by Ranbir and a few members of the cast, and he is, apparently, also trying to convince Rahman to make a quick trip with them. At the launch, there will also be a qawwali session, where they will sing the qawwali that features in the film. Imtiaz was unavailable for comment, but dargah in-charge Syed Afsar Ali Nizami confirmed the news and said, "Imtiaz bhai has shot the qawwali at the dargah and even Rahman bhai has a very special place for it in his heart. The dargah features in the movie too, and we hope for the success of its music."

The Rockstar behind the music

Imtiaz Ali and A R Rahman talk about their experience of working with each other on ‘Rockstar’

We’ve heard the much-awaited music of Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar. We can tell you that A R Rahman, the master of reinvention, has broken new ground yet again with this eclectic 14-piece soundtrack.

But Imtiaz Ali will tell you that it wasn’t easy. He calls Rahman a ‘very difficult guy to work with’. “He never explains the beauty of what he is offering. He may offer you an uncut diamond on a platter. But if you fail to see it, he will not insist you look again. He will say - okay, chuck it, here is something else.”

With a few minutes to midnight, Imtiaz has managed to pinch some time off his frenetic post-production work at an Andheri studio. He strides into the Ashtavinayak Cine Vision office. Once he settles down with an empty cup, a kettle full of hot Darjeeling tea and a pack of Gauloises (a French brand of smokes), Imtiaz runs his fingers through his hair and talks about how the music for Rockstar was created.

“When I envisioned a rock music score, I didn’t want a copy of western rock,” he says, “I wanted music that adhered to the principles of rock but originated from our land and from our realities. I wanted music that was organic to the character and yet had an appeal beyond conventional Bollywood music.”

Imtiaz, who grew up on a staple of Hindi movies in Jamshedpur single-screens, doesn’t think of stories without songs. His ear for music that works is evident from the chartbusters from Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal.

Pouring himself a cuppa, he elaborates, “I never have to fit songs in. They simply take the story forward. And just as you cast actors, you look for the best guy to compose that style of music. Most often, the best guy is Rahman sir (he never misses the sir). In this case, he very specifically was.”

Though their first discussion on Rockstar didn’t go anywhere, Imtiaz approached Rahman again last February. “He instantly went - Oh my god, I have no time! There is no way I can do this,” Imtiaz pauses and smiles. “But I will do it. I want to do it - Rahman said. I felt relieved. He was in the thick of a hundred commitments - recording in LA, performing at concerts, jamming with SuperHeavy, Hollywood, Bollywood and Tamil movies. But he said let’s do it. That was good enough for me.”

Apart from a lowdown on the script, Imtiaz’s brief to Rahman was only a few lines on the tortured artiste that Ranbir Kapoor plays. “I told him how Jordan, the protagonist, is inarticulate, how he can express himself only through music, how his music is influenced by not only his situation but also by the music of the place he visits. So when Jordan is in Prague hanging about with gypsies, he imbibes their spirit and makes gypsy music. This is what Hawa Hawa is. Likewise, when Jordan is thrown out of his house, he goes to Hazrat Nizamuddin dargah, spends time with the Qawwals, absorbs their music and plays with them. That journey was not only about understanding music, but also about understanding life,” says Imtiaz, stubbing out his cigarette and lighting another.

It isn’t hard to believe in Imtiaz when he talks about how he wanted everything to be unpretentious in the film. “How Robert Plant or Jim Morrison behaved on stage had a lot to do with their realities. Instead of emulating what they did, we looked for why they did it, we unraveled the reasons. We then applied those reasons to a guy who lives in Pitampura, Delhi.”

As Jordan’s popularity with the masses hits full force in the story, Imtiaz felt there was a need to demonstrate this craze with an anthem song. “Lyricist Irshad Kamil and I spent a lot of time just thinking of phrases, such as Ban jaa, Banjaara, before stumbling on Sadda Haq, Aithay Rakh ((It’s) Our right, keep it here).

This fit well with my story. At that point in the film, Ranbir’s character is asking for his right to be himself. A human being is nature and society has no right to make him plastic. That eventually became the hook. In no time, Rahman roped in Orianthi Panagaris, one of the zaniest contemporary guitarists who also performed with Michael Jackson. At his LA studio, Rahman recorded her loud guitars for six hours. I was on Skype throughout,” says Imtiaz.

Was it cumbersome to travel to Chennai for every recording session? Imtiaz says it was actually a blessing. “It afforded me extra time to write. When you are a writer-director, nobody feels your writing needs extra time. The two-hour flights and time at the hotel room was the only way I could write out and make this film.”

Imtiaz recounts how the first song they recorded last July, Phir se udd chala, set the tone for an effortless musical expedition.

“Rahman had recorded himself singing gibberish. He told me there is something good in it and maybe we can cut out portions. But I really liked it so much that we retained the way it is. Nothing repeats itself and it is just pure expression,” he says.

With its dreamy guitar-work, Jo bhi main is probably the most scintillating track of the album. “Jordan feels - I have beautiful thoughts in my mind. But when I try to express them in words, it gets clerical and the beauty of the thought gets destroyed with the first word I speak. Irshad came up with - Jo bhi main, kehna chahoon, barbaad karey, alphaaz mere - and Rahman improvised on it.”

Imtiaz says he took many liberties with Rahman. “While he was recording, I have pressed the button to talk to Mohit in the singer’s booth and have given him ‘musical instructions’. But that is the beauty of that man.

You don’t have to stop yourself. Often, I have apologised to him and he has laughed it off. He makes you bold and makes you give your best. He keeps telling me; you are the director, you don’t like one tune, I’ll come up with many. You must do your job, I must do mine.”

Directors often rant that composers don’t inspire a sense of confidence. However, Imtiaz offers a refreshing view on this, “Rahman doesn’t inspire confidence in the conventional sense. You never feel - Arre yaar yeh toh Rahman hai, yeh sambhaal lega. You always feel that you better do the right thing, nahi toh yeh aadmi toh duba dega (laughs). What he does is he draws out the best from whoever he works with.”

To drive his point home, Imtiaz recounts the first time Irshad met Rahman. “We were waiting for Rahman in his studio and Irshad was trembling. The hall was splattered with the choicest of award statuettes - Oscars, Grammies, Filmfares, what-nots. Irshad told me nervously - Imtiaz bhai, aap hi unse bolna. Meri toh awaaz nahi niklegi. Yeh Rahman...bahut badi aura hai. Yet within five minutes of us meeting Rahman, I saw Irshad doling out fundas - Sir, hook toh hota hai sir, aap jo bhi bolo (laughs). Rahman nodded along patiently.”

Luckily, Imtiaz didn’t go through a director’s worst fear - of waiting endlessly for the music to finish. “I was told Rahman doesn’t respect your time. We were supposed to have nine songs, but there are 14 tracks on the CD and around six extra pieces in the film; which makes it 20 in all. None of this has come late. I only had to tell him that I am shooting and the song would reach well in time.”

Meanwhile, Ranbir, embarking on a career-defining role, learnt the guitar and spent several days and nights at Rahman’s studio. “This way, he had greater ownership of the music while being on stage during shoots. He didn’t have to pretend he knew the music, because he actually did.”

From working 18 hours a day and then some, to finish penning the lyrics, Imtiaz and Irshad have spent few days on a trot without a wink of rest. Among all other recording sessions, Imtiaz holds the time he spent with Rahman in Kashmir as special.

“Rahman, Ranbir and I would travel about in search of good food. We were inviting ourselves to locals’ homes to eat. It was great fun.” Imtiaz also credits Rahman for filling in the narrative with thoughts from sufi philosophy. “Rahman says, sometimes, you have to go against your grain for a greater experience, to experience life better than be bound by the limits of your personality.”

Rahman on Imtiaz

In another suburb of the city, after Rahman walks into his recording studio, he elaborates what he means by that. “You should let go of yourself when you create something new and not sit in your box and let something good pass you by. You grow only if you take the risk of adapting and discovering. That way, you can have a longer journey.”

About Rockstar, Rahman says, “We focused on whatever would come to us naturally. All the music fell into place in the first three days. Later, we did three songs afresh - Kun Faaya Kun, Katiyan Karoon and Naadaan Parinde.”

Though Rahman hadn’t seen Imtiaz’s movies when he met him initially, he says he liked the director’s passion. “I later watched Love Aaj kal and loved it.” The two were in sync from the start, as they shared their vision of steering clear of stereotypes.

“We had to make his character friendly to all kinds of audience and not just rock music aficionados. I didn’t want to tread that spaced-out, dope and booze-filled rock music scene (smiles). I have seen young people acting all rebellious, playing underground metal and trying to be cool (mocks an air guitar and laughs). When I was 11 or 12, I would set up keyboards for some local rock bands. They would go up on stage, going wild on their guitars. I would be like - the plug will get pulled out!”

Picking Mohit Chauhan as Ranbir’s screen voice was almost an instinctual call for Rahman and Imtiaz. “Mohit’s voice has innocence and character. Until now, he had one particular style. But in this, he was stretched and pushed to all kinds of zones (laughs). We both worked very hard on it. Some songs took four days to record, some even seven. But when you hear it, you will feel how effortless it is.”

How did this project help Rahman find newer facets to his craft? “We didn’t have to make four rock songs, a sad song and an item song. Each song carried a different expression. So I kept the sound organic - less synthesizers, less effects, more acoustic guitar and bass. The gypsy song (Hawa hawa) was the most difficult to compose as it had so many layers, styles and instruments woven in.”

What about the talk in the industry that ‘Rahman is back’ with Rockstar after a rough patch? The legend shrugs and smiles, “I don’t mind what anybody is saying. As long as I am occupied, feel creatively challenged and have fun, it is all good. This year has been really good. I haven’t been pushed to the core, I had my space and I even did a scriptwriting course from UCLA.”

“I have got it all - the Grammies, Oscars. I have done all this for 20 years. Now let me enjoy the process without the pressures. Every day should be a bonus for me.”

Some extracts that touched me

Pouring himself a cuppa, he elaborates, “I never have to fit songs in. They simply take the story forward. And just as you cast actors, you look for the best guy to compose that style of music. Most often, the best guy is Rahman sir (he never misses the sir). In this case, he very specifically was.”
You don’t have to stop yourself. Often, I have apologised to him and he has laughed it off. He makes you bold and makes you give your best. He keeps telling me; you are the director, you don’t like one tune, I’ll come up with many. You must do your job, I must do mine.”

the most thoughtfull and painful truth for me is:

He calls Rahman a ‘very difficult guy to work with’. “He never explains the beauty of what he is offering. He may offer you an uncut diamond on a platter. But if you fail to see it, he will not insist you look again. He will say - okay, chuck it, here is something else.”

imagine ur in the director's shoes in the middle of a decision making process, 'will it come out well and reach the mass? or shall i ask for another?"

Rahman steps on the pedal to complete Rockstar
Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar apparently has 16 tracks and music maestro A R Rahman has a deadline to meet. He is currently recording the background music for Rockstar in Chennai at his studio.

According to a source from Chennai work is going on a “war-footing” in the studio to meet the 11.11.2011 release date.

The source informs Businessofcinema.com, “Rockstar has been delayed long enough. The music was the main area of creative contemplation. Rahman Sir was required to compose as many as 16 solid tracks for the film.”

These apparently include a couple of numbers done in two versions on acoustic and electric guitar. “But obviously they had to be recorded separately, and from scratch. This has been one of the toughest challenges of Rahman Sir’s career. Just the sheer volume of tunes required took him twice the time taken by an average film score.”

The background score is now being recorded overnight, so to speak. And the one bearing the brunt of Rahman’s anxious schedule is director Sagar Ballary whose film Hum Tum Shabana is just a week and a half from release. Apparently Sagar, who as a creative policy, records all his music at Rahman’s studio in Chennai, finds himself running helter-skelter to accommodate his technicians into the studio during the hours when Rahman is not working.

Explains Ballary, “I am mixing Hum Tum Shabana in Rahman Sir’s studio. All my films Bheja Fry 2, Kachcha Limboo and Hum Tum Shabana are mixed in Rahman Sir’s studio in Chennai. Yes, we’ve had to adjust our schedule according to his. He’s recording the background score for Rockstar.”

When asked about the inconvenience, Sagar protests, “Rahman Sir had planned his recordings long ago. He likes to record during the night. So we’ve no choice but to use his studio late evening nad early morning.”
