JeMo consistently claims he knows nothing about music but keeps writing about it regularly

This is really funny in that article :

Jeyamohan fast losing any respect he has yet (http://www.jeyamohan.in/?p=8190)

RS,
indha threadula vandhu enna kelviyidhu? :D It is by Raja. The fact that Raja was scoring music for the Shaji Karun movie was posted here some time back. One of the hubbers I know was not too happy when he spoke to me. He said Shaji Karun's movies only released in film festivals!!! The premise is good and let us see what Raja does here. Seems to have good scope for BGM as well.

//இசையை எப்படி விமர்சிக்க முடியும்? அனுபவிக்கத்தான் முடியும். இசை விமர்சகனென்றால் பாட்டு பாடத்தெரியுமா? பாடிக்காட்டுங்கள் என்றெல்லாம் கொடுமைப்படுத்துகிறார்கள்//

Just a small digression,

Suresh, Are you the one involved in the back and forth comment war on Karthiks' milliblog review of ARR latest album? I think you made some excellent points on IR's stamp on a genre vs generic handling of that genre. But i think all this is just ornamental to the actual melody of the song. I believe the Melody is that makes the song stick in ones mind and that where IR is without peers. People may talk about the orchestration and all other genre fusion stuff of IR but its his melody which goes straight to your heart and makes the song memorable. That's what is severely lacking with modern day MD's including ARR. Melody takes a back seat and packaging of a song is taking precedence.
Sorry for the digression.

Now, an apt definition for அறிவுஜீவி by our hubber Joe in his blog (http://cdjm.blogspot.com/2009/03/blog-post.html):

Now, with AR Rahman's KM Music Conservatory in place, one may hope the situation will only improve. It will be fitting that he is correcting the wrong he unintentionally did.

Honestly I don't think Rahman did anything wrong here, either intentionally or unintentionally. I would think it is just a natural progression (or regression. Depends on whom you ask :) This has already happened in the western pop world and it was only a matter of time before it came in Indian Film Music. That it came through Rahman is only incidental. Otherwise it would have come through someone else. This is how things have progressed technologically and that march cannot be stopped. As I said, Raja understands this far better than us and therefore his crib.

Very true. Every generation sweeps away the things of the previous generation and condemns the things of the next generation. Change is not an easy thing to accept for everybody. Here are two quotes -

nitu_krishnan,

Agree with your post 100%. Nothing is more pathetic than when a culture with a strong tradition of music voluntarily throws it aside for cheap imitation.

The sad part is we are no longer imitating the good side of Western music (like their classical tradition, which you can see influence of in IR's music), but instead the garbage like rock/rap....

Fact is, IR's comments are spot on....as for arrogance...Ramanujan's mentor Hardy once said "Humble men do not do great work". The question of a person's importance is completely unrelated to whether you want to have dinner with him or not....

We have to worry only if our traditional music starts to imitate western music. After all, film music is just pop.

5. Raja can never compose the music he does were he to be a different and humble person. Let us leave the humility with the next generation like Rahman, Harris, YSR etc. They still have a long long way to go before they can catch up with Raja's musical output or his genius. Till then their humility will serve them good.

Well said Suresh!

Sureshs65,
It doesn't always work that way. The humblest artist I've come across in the media is MSV.

Awareness on music is very very less. Only few deparments like singing gets over attention. Aspiring musicians wont work hard and they go to compose for mega serials which is becoming a easy source of money even for mediocrity. THe fact is, its very easy to record your own work today, with computers, laptops. There is also tons of

Awareness is less on composing tekniks, there are no good books for composing and music theory.
Even in instruments, lot of awareness is missing. there are some keyboard players who dont know the difference btw electronic keyboard, digital piano and synthesiser.
The content thought at B.A and M.A music is not improving.
Is carnatic music well documented, these days? Or still we need to go to a guru?

That is the problem here. not to say that MSV is not humble - really who knows? and frankly why should one care about whether MSV was/is humble or not. I will remember Kallellaam Maanikka kallaaguma till the end of my life and thats what counts. All this humility bull**** is a facade imposed on artistes by 50+ underachievers in media. And the evaluation of artistes and branding them in the name of humility Sucks big time.

nothing is happening as feared above. traditional carnatic music is going great guns in india and abroad, particularly the u.s.

in fact there are more practitioners than listeners

the quality is a little bit down, i do agree. its because people want to showcase their talent more than to learn the art completely before going public.

but it will change. time will give them lessons.

but as far as awareness is concerned, more people are learning carnatic than ever before.

Maybe already posted, very nice read

http://www.tamiloviam.com/site/?p=923

That's why I added 'in media'. :)

nitu_krishnan,

After all, film music is just pop.

i wouldnt say film music is just pop. they have made it into pop.
there are some very fundamental differences.

They have made it into pop because it is all it needs. Atleast the producers do.

That leaves out Gavaskar who is not a bowler. That leaves out Warne who doesn't have 800 wickets. That definitely leaves out viewers like me who can only spell cricket.

Shouldn't we be looking only at the quality of the bows, and not of the archers?

RS,

I read that but as music lover all I can say is that the person who wrote is more a political commentator than a music critic. I would probably take somone like Shaji over him :) I have no issues in his assessment of Raja but his musical knowledge and his trying to portray that Beethovan could do a symphony only because he was sympathetic to the working class is a joke. As Ramki has mentioned, this article is more a political point of view wherein he is trying to impose the same political view on music as well. I am not sure it is fully compatible.

Again, are we forgetting the thing that most of the WCM Gods like Mozart, Beethoven too had barriers at their period? Is the recognition what raja is already possessing, enuf? Or still he and his fans need to propel his talent to the world? Is everything ok?

Suresh,

the magazine which published the article was a Political Magazine & the Blog which is re-publishing it is also a Political blog. You can't expect them to write music articles. The Casteist Dirty politcs had always played bigger role in ups and downs of many artists in this country cannot be denied.

Think about a scenario 'if there was a composer from upper caste saywith 50% of talent of Raaja' do you still think that the composer would've been neglected by the mainstream media?

Raaja was neglected and marginalized by many (Not all - I know personally many friends who are die- hard fans of Raaja) upper caste people during the 70's & 80's is a FACT. The Article written almost 20 years back is an anger - Anger that was kept under bounds for more than 2000 years. When it gets unleashed its destined be full of mistakes. So? we can brush aside the article without trying to understand the intent and go back to read Shaji! if thats the only way I'am sorry, there is no way that this society is going to come out of its hypocrisy.

I know the flaming words which are going to cause people to take a defensive stand against this article. Reading the article objectively without getting angry may give a proper perspective on this 'Socio-Political critique'.

Whether the writer knows music or not he knows history well. His background of seeing facts with the philosophy of 'Historical Materialism' has helped him to see Beethoven (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_van_Beethoven) to have been sympathetic towards working class. he was a Romantic era (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romantic_music) composer and like any other Romantic Era artist he would've been driven by Reaction against Industrial Revolution. Not sure about his philosophies his works and some incidents in his life gives hope that he was not a Personality to create music for his inner personal artistic urge, rather he was creating music for the universal brother hood.
Beethoven was attracted to the ideals of the Enlightenment. In 1804, when Napoleon's imperial ambitions became clear, Beethoven took hold of the title-page of his Third Symphony and scratched the name Bonaparte out so violently that he made a hole in the paper. He later changed the work's title to "Sinfonia Eroica, composta per festeggiare il sovvenire d'un grand'uom" ("Heroic Symphony, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man"), and he rededicated it to his patron, Prince Joseph Franz von Lobkowitz, at whose palace it was first performed. that he was against imperialism
The fourth movement of his Ninth Symphony features an elaborate choral setting of Schiller's Ode An die Freude ("Ode to Joy"), an optimistic hymn championing the brotherhood of humanity. and that he was a champion of humanity, and freemasonic thinker shows clearly his stand on music and philosophy and the working class. Too bad that Karl Marx published his '
Communist manifesto in 1848, 20 years after Beethovens Demise. Iam sure Beethoven would've written a grand symphony welcoming it.

.... his trying to portray that Beethovan could do a symphony only because he was sympathetic to the working class is a joke.
The underlying meaning of the statement is that the thinkers/Artists/Musicians of Europe Post Classical - Baroque -Rococo period were driven by humanity rather than individualism.

RS,

I fully understand the stand of that article and I have no issues with the political side of it. About the upper caste - lower caste divide and the upper caste hegemony. That part is fine with me. I would have been fine if the author had taken this article along the lines of 'Upper Caste dominating Carnatic music to the extent of completely keeping lower caste people away from it' and how that has colored the music scenario in India. That is definitely something which can and should be debated.

The comedy comes in when he tries to juxtapose Symphony with Carnatic music and decides that symphony can only be created by humanitarian ideals and carnatic music by people with no humanitarian ideals. As one critic once said (European critic by the way) that though the world praises Greek civilization, it pushes under the carpet the fact that Greece was a thriving slave market. And we can always have someone dig up some fact that Beethovan or Morzart was a racist. That their humanity extended only to Europeans and not to people outside of Europe. It is well known that Wagner's music is considered racist. So once we start looking at music with a political agenda it becomes a free for all. It just depends on the agenda that you have. Was Mozart a feminist? Did Bach cheat on his wife? Did Bahms employ children in his household? I am sure an imaginative guy can pick one of the thousand issues that plague us and paint the concerned musician in bad light. If caste issues plagued (and plague) India, slavery, imperialisam and racism were far stronger throughout the 'developed' world. That may probably not leave us with many musicians. The same way Shaji tries to use a Mozart quote to undermine all that Raja has done, this author uses symphony to undermine all that the great carnatic composers did.

Another aspect which I have the major problem is the complete lack of understanding of music history. The author in a very flamboyant fashion asks why Tyagaraja couldn't create a symphony. The reason is simple. Symphony was never a part of Indian musical ethos ever. Neither in North India or South India. The music here developed on melodic lines and the microtonal effects were more important than two notes sounding together. Every culture has its own music and music taste. It is only in South India that you can get a person to appreciate "Chinna Kannan Azhaikiran" because somehow Reethigowla ragam in our blood, whatever be the caste. The same song will find no takers beyond the Vindhyas since they just cannot relate to that raga. In that way the greatness of Raja is to take a classical form like WCM and get it across to Indian ears unaccostumed to it. Anyone with some musical knowledge could ask the author that while Tyagaraja did not compose a symphony, neither Bach or Beethovan did not know about Ananda Bhairavi or Yadhukula Kambhoji which was known to some unknown folk singers even during the Sangam times. The authors question is very similar to some people claiming their language is better because it has the letter 'z' or 'La' or some such thing. There is no merit in such a question.

If you are going to nit pick on some sweeping statements like this and brush away the article as a 'whole', then it doesnt sound different to me from Shaji-Charu likes, who pick some obscure sentences of Raaja and pull him down totally.

Interestingly, while the whole BGM experience of MP is phenomenal, the best BGM was reserved by IR for the worst part - i.e. scenes involving silukku - of the movie (IMO).

Much as we celebrate MP's BGM, how much was BGM appreciation culture well spread at that point? These were all part of IR's education to TN on BGM. Once He brought recognition to BGM, the vegujana magazines hopped on to the bandwagon. RS,

I am not nitpicking and rejecting. I am rejecting that part of the article which the author tries to prove that symphony music is far superior to carnatic music. And these are not isolated statements. He says them in paragraph after paragraph. I have lot of love and respect for film music, carnatic music, symphony music or any form of music. I cannot take the simplistic arguments that he comes up with to state that symphony is better than carnatic music. The whole tone the article takes is that Raja is great because he composed a symphony, which is far superior to our music. This is the musical part which I have problem with. I can show that Raja is a genius just by the innovation he did with classical music!!! Raja's genius is never in doubt.

Regarding the anger part, in order to understand better it would have been good if the writer had listed who where those who did not want Raja to succeed. This again I feel is more complex than the writer is making it out to be. Those who didn't encourage Raja initially were all only 'metukudi' or listeners of classical music? Where there no fans of older MDs who did not like Raja? Who all in the industry were keen on Raja not succeeding? How much did Raja's own attitude contribute to this? My feeling is that none of these is answered or even probed but complete whitewash (or blackwash) done on a generic group. That helps no one.

Liked as well as disliked the article above .
While you may be right in stating the fact that social situations do shape the path of any art field, there are too many assumptions made which distracts from the focus stated . And its too much hate- related than making a point by building a case. COuld have been very interesting if the case is built in a nice way .

Still , good read :)

I am rejecting that part of the article which the author tries to prove that symphony music is far superior to carnatic music.

Aren't you convinced yet that this is a reaction from people who have been rejected learning 'Classical' music, and whose own folk 'music' was considered low & untouchable for centuries?

The whole tone the article takes is that Raja is great because he composed a symphony, which is far superior to our music. This is the musical part which I have problem with.

The author doesn't endorse 'Carnatic' music as 'Our' music. Since he was not allowed to participate in 'Carnatic' music and since he got an opportunity to listen to the wonders of WCM in parallel to Folk music done by Raaja, The claim is Just in his POV.

The second part of your question is ridiculous since the early years of Raaja were filled with rejections and humiliations that, singling out persons and pointing fingers will be a futile exercise. Those persons themselves came back to Raaja later when he became a HUGE PHENOMENON (rightfully, with the support of common people) doesnt take away the fact that Raaja's name was blackened out due to dirty caste politics earlier.

Even later there are some instances where he was indirectly humiliated. An Instance when he performed his carnatic krithis in music academy, the reactions and critic was so harsh that he considered better not to perform again.

Sample this: Minsara Kanavu Audio Release Function - Cho Ramasamy : 'I stopped listening to film music after MSV period. It was all garbage music after that. Now Iam starting to feel fresh after listening to Rahmans music.'

Do you think this is due to true admiration towards Rahmans or MSV's music?
I have heard people saying about not liking Raaja's music altogether for a different reason, But have heard such kind of sweeping statements and completely brushing away Raajas role in music only from one community. That is the sole anger of that Article.

just because cho didnt like raja, it does not mean he is not intelligent.

it would be only a fanboy reaction to underestimate what cho has achieved.

even raja ulari kottufies a lot when he talks about matters other than music. that does not mean he is not a genius.

and giving a caste color to everything is just stupid. for ages only non brahmins are playing the nagaswaram and tavil. is it not carnatic music. are there not great musicians from other communities.

have not people accepted great musicians from other communities.

brahmins (not all) display great intelligence in whatever field they are because of their association with intellectual practices for eons.

they dont claim to be great warriors or brave people. they have always been associated with intellectual pursuits. of course only a miniscule amount of their legacy is now with the current generation. adhukke ivvalavu vayatherichal patta ennatha solla.

which does not mean there can not be great intellectuals in other communities. only thing is that the percentage is more in brahmin community.

it is definitely not acceptable to paint a community in bad color for some individuals' preferences.

gamakam, vicky, rajendra ivvalavu per rajava pathi sorry, rajavoda music pathi anu anuva ezhudharaangale avanga ellam brahmins illaya. enakku therinju music pathi music therinju pesara 90 per cent people brahmins thaan.

On a positive note, we can see here that whether intentionally or otherwise, AV has helped us on one count - that of refuting certain claims that IR "over-does" BGM:-)

Even in a recent BR article, this allegation was kind of implied, stating that IR "underlines" with BGM and kind of twists emotions of viewers / stop their own trip / grasp of the emotions.

While being innovative and pleasant, I've personally never find IR's BGM intrusive. And I don't mind "தன்னையே இழத்தல்" to music rather than "often-sub-standard-histrionics" of onscreen artists!

app,

Thanks for the link. That weekend I was out and did not check that up.

Saagar: Welcome back. Been a long time. Wondering where you have been. raj_musing has been filling up your place regarding Malayalam music of Raja. Hope you join the party :)

Suresh/Friends,
I have been very much visiting the forum regularly, but to be honest, I deliberately kept away from posting anything, because the discussions were more of adi-thadi.
Many times, I have felt frustrated at the levels people stoop to, I felt it was difficult to write on anything else, in the midst of so much filth, many times I have felt felt like reacting, but just managed to keep away.

I wonder why people make a mountain out of mole hill of only anything connected to IR, what he says , does.. Even when he wins an NA...This is going on for years - I remember the Thiruvasagam release period, when Outlook published an article on IR, where rather than discussing musical mertis, the wrter drifted to caste & religious issues & his Phd theories.

If IR finds spiritual solace in Hinduism, people say it's because he wants to gain a community acceptance. Honestly, i have never come across such insinuations for many other legends who have converted or just beleive in other religions with similar fervour.
A simple example - KJ Yesudas & his Hindu Leanings.

To quote the end of that article - IR's reply "I am beyond such garbage," seems very relevent. If a person is so obsessed with these marginal stuff, he would not be creating music. (that's true for most of the successful creators - they do not have the time or inclination to think about these things which appear trivial / garbage to them - probably when they say, i breathe music, they mean it).

As Suresh has mentioned, let the discussions be on music.

An afterthought : Some offices place puch bags for people to de-stress (Punch imaging the Boss). probably one thread can be opened permanently, "IR-Punch Bag" which is open for all those who wish to de-stress by articles on IR-bashing.

thinking that he is praising raja, some nut head said on a function, 'raja would have been hailed by the whole world if his colour had not been black'. what is this nonsense. if people can not apprehend the greatness of his music they can better shut their useless mouths rather than expose their inability to understand music.

instrumental music has always been given only secondary status. and among the instruments nadhaswaram definitely has a prominent place. and only nadhaswaram is played daily in all 'brahmin dominated' temples to the Lord's pleasure right from thirupalli ezhuchi to ardhajama poojai. not any other instrument. i think nadhaswaram has a prominent place than veena in most sabhas.

and patrons are more important for any kind of music to thrive. those who crib, i ask them, how many of you have attended a nadhaswaram concert? chumma yaravadhu engayavadhu ezhudhi vachadha appadiye solla koodadhu.

RS / Narayanan,

Both of you have made clear your respective stand. Now if you guys want to slug it out about castes you are most welcome to do it in a different forum. Now things are getting down to name calling and challenging everyone to call names. Discussions are definitely not going in the right direction nor in right taste as far as this forum is concerned. So as I said most of us here are not interested in hearing this hate diatribe. So please take this discussion elsewhere.

My request to the mods would be to remove such posts as soon as possible so as to ensure we are back to talking about what this thread should be talking about. Which is news related to Raja and the subsequent debate, as Saagar puts it.

for ages only non brahmins are playing the nagaswaram and tavil. is it not carnatic music.

instrumental music has always been given only secondary status. and among the instruments nadhaswaram definitely has a prominent place. and only nadhaswaram is played daily in all 'brahmin dominated' temples to the Lord's pleasure right from thirupalli ezhuchi to ardhajama poojai. not any other instrument. i think nadhaswaram has a prominent place than veena in most sabhas.

and patrons are more important for any kind of music to thrive. those who crib, i ask them, how many of you have attended a nadhaswaram concert? chumma yaravadhu engayavadhu ezhudhi vachadha appadiye solla koodadhu.

if we dont have first hand experience on something, it is better not to talk about that.

thani avarthanam kooda thaan avvalavu popular kedayadhu. more than half of the rasikas start the exodus during thani. adhukkum jaathi thaan kaaranama? mridangam vasikaravan ellam brahmanan kedayadha?

again, i want to reiterate, please stop the **** of seeing everything under the light of caste.

Saagar,

Looks like I picked up a wrong time to welcome you back :) Well, as you say anything related to Raja gets blown out of proportion, especially in a negative way. But this thread atleast gives us a chance to defend Raja against lot of misconceptions.

You should probably come to the 'Last Raja Song Heard' thread more often to give us some insights in his Malayalam melodies or other songs that you have heard. Presence of serious listeners like you will definitely help in having a good discussion.

Very true. We all know how wonderfully Raja cleared all misunderstandings with ONV and the media could do nothing about it !! It is a case of true respect.

The reason I bring ONV here is that I am happy that ONV has been awarded the Jnanpeeth. The announcement came today. Maybe DR should post a OVN Raja combo in the Song of the Day thread. They have given some lovely numbers together. 'thumbi vaa' and 'kunnathe' are enough to give immortality to this combination. My congrats to the great ONV and more importantly congrats to the Indian Govt for recognizing his contributions.

Hopefully you will listen to the songs I have listed here and get soothed. I think these type of songs are something which Raja has done more than anyone else. It deserves a different thread which I will open soon.

Karan Arora, CEO of High Ground Entertainment is planning to make "Kaali: The warrior Goddess" without indian actors and is also planning to rope in both IR and ARR. Dont know what he is thinking/dreaming of :). I dont think IR will agree for this (because he is not the only composer). Anyway, the plan to start rolling is only by next April. John Altman, who was part of titanic music is also part of this project, it seems.

I remember their review of

You're possibly referring to this post in tfmpage :

From: Subbu (@ 164.164.163.11) on: Mon Dec 22 04:20:22 EST 2003

In "Katriniley varum geetham", Kavitha acted in 3 different characters. The first Kavitha dies in mystery.

The title song "Katrinileyyyyyy varum geetham" was (supposedly) recorded 3 times sung by 3 different singers (PS, VJ and SJ) for 3 different Kavitha's. IR had mentioned this in his interview for "Anandha vikatan" (one of the issues of early 1978). IR said that PS' version was in a different tune singing for the Ghost character...

Versions of VJ and SJ are available in net and in CD/Cassette but PS version is not traceable. It was not included in the movie as well. May be IR can dig it out :-)

Both ‘available’ versions are good; IMO, VJ’s is mesmerizing. Wherever needed, she stretches and moulds her voice… not too much… it is just as it should be :-)

Probably none of us have ever heard it :-)

Thanks for posting this song. Amazing song with great interludes (the long whistle and the Guitar) and the great ending with SJ's laugh. I distinctly remember the review from Ananda vikatn. He is one of favorite composers, ofcourse after Raaja. His Medhuva medhuva song still lingers in my mind always. The starting flute pieces whch hands over the baton to another flute piece was simply joyful to hear;then came the voice SPB and Chitra.

Thinking of IR's NA's .. of the 4 Awards, 3 are for languages other than in Tamil - although in one way - it's something good & not something everyone can acheive/aspire for,

Only 1 NA from more than prob 700 Tamil film gems is pretty hard to digest. For all the revolution he created in his time, the award came only close to 10 years after his entry!

Only 1 NA from more than prob 700 Tamil film gems is pretty hard to digest.

In one way, it showcases how less influential is TN / TF in the NA process in general. At least partially this can be attributed to the TN political stance in general (anti-indhi and so considered anti-nationals etc). Phenomenal talents like MSV / Sivaji never got NAs at all, for e.g. and their prime period coincided with the growth period of DMK.

Looking at the year-wise awards, during the period,
1986 Ilaiyaraaja Sindhu Bhairavi Tamil
1985 Jaidev Ankahee Hindi
1984 Ilaiyaraaja Saagara Sangamam Telugu
1983 Ramesh Naidu Meghasandesam Telugu
1982 Khayyam Umrao Jaan Hindi
1981 Satyajit Ray Hirak Rajar Deshe Bengali
1980 K. V. Mahadevan Shankarabharanam Telugu
1979 Jaidev Gaman Hindi
1978 B.V. Karanth Ghatashraddha Kannada
1977 B.V. Karanth Rishya Shringa Kannada
1976 Bhupen Hazarika Chameli Memsaab Assamese
1975 Ananda Shankar[1] Chorus Bengali

Have heard from all movies, except, Ghatashradha , Rishya Shringa & Hirak Rajar Deshe. One common factor that's true for all is that all the songs / film itself is on a classical base/musical themes (with the exception of Chameli Memsaab-which is Assamese folk). Probably IR's Folk was not considered "Fit" enough.

With all due regards to Bhupen Hazarika, Annakili does deserve to be one up , if I have got the year right (1976).

Nowadays, being "different" is considered fit enough for an award.

Hi,

Usha Shankar your relevant to IR music (coffee beans) you made my day worth visiting our blog........

Regarding AV movie reviews.. I rememeber they written for "karagaattakaran" taht all songs are good and further stated " Raja kaia vaicha athu wronga pona thella"..

May be they realised that IR is like a sun nobody can hide him.

Than, in the year 2005 when IR is in low profile , they published the article about IR's musical concert in ITALY a good praising review.

Let's forget the past ......

Ah! Yes, nInga dhAn sonnadhu.

AwardlAm sari. But overall I have a few grouses with Pazhassi Raja BGM
1) Lack of Native instruments. A lot of times I have complained about others' BGM that they lack nativity - coming from Raja, this is an unpardonable aspect, therefore.
2) Overall, it was BGM for a collage of moments with no unifying theme or tying up things together
3) Raja usually adds perspective. indha padathula apdi Edhum thaniyA paNNalai. Scopeum perusA illai. Even the Thalaserry scene was only underlining something that was obvious from the screen.
4) It will rank way below if you consider Raja's lifetime work in BGM
5) As usual, the committee has been swayed by the movie rather than the actual worth of the music - that's what I feel. Ofcourse, that is what award committees are all about - you are expecting a bunch of movie related professionals who possibly specify in one field to judge all other aspects and obviously, that is a flaw. But this is particularly pronounced in case of things like BGM, which only few directors understand even today - if a Manirathnam or Adoor or K Viswanath or bengali directors or even Sanjay Leela Bansali evaluated BGM every year, I wont complain. They know the role of BGM, and can relate to the use of music in movies.
6) It particularly rankles me that in every case of Raja's NA, the role played by the nature of the movie and the overall impact of the movie is higher in getting the award. An award for a movie like GURU would have given me some succour that Raja's actual talent is being recognised. But whatever awards he has got so far, I consider them incidental to recognition of his talent.

Despite all this, the award is well-deserved adhu vEra vishayam.

AwardlAm sari. But overall I have a few grouses with Pazhassi Raja BGM
...
Despite all this, the award is well-deserved adhu vEra vishayam.

Agree to all your points except #1, and to your final conclusion

#1 - I too love usage of appropriate instruments for nativity in general.

However, when scenes are generic - e.g. the war scenes - my preference is western orchestra :-) That way, PR BGM doesn't suffer too much for lack of native instruments, as the movie itself is about a conflict involving westerners and Adhi ushus gets a grand feeling thanks to the orchestra.

There's also possibility that many scenes that could have given opportunity for local instruments got chopped off (AdivAsi thiruvizhA kinds or ICM stuff inside palace etc). We still get to hear some wonderful native sounds as the ones in kunnaththE prelude / interludes :-)

Usha, I dont want to argue this among ourselves. Mine was just an opinion.
Nevertheless, nInga solradhu 1900s-la.
During the time of Pazhassi Raja, the battle was on between various forces to control various parts of India - infact, India as a nation-state concept may not even have existed then.

The English are incidental to Pazhassi's life until roughly the time of his life where this movie starts. What I mean is when the Raja is talking about perumAL and Bhagavathyum ratchikkum indha bhoomi, native feel is a must.
Ofcourse, what is appropriately native and correct during that time in Vayanadu is open to conjecture. But, we as a country have inherited traditions and what we have today is but a fragment of what was then. So, what I perceive as malayala nativity today will have some semblance to what was then malayala nativity.

I am just wondering what was IR's vision for this score - maybe my fault, I am not getting a hook on that.

Plum,

My argument here is... Hey,wait a sec. I seem to be getting the argument virus, i.e., I am trying to argue without seeing the movie :) So I have no argument until I see the movie fully. I only saw the movie till the Talassery scene and that particular scene background was standout material. Need to see the movie fully now so that I can participate in the debate. Else it will become a case of 'tcha, vada poche'

Dear All,

I agree that IR's BGM is not innovative as in the period of 80's thanks to tamil flim industry which spoiled the good form of one of the greatest indian artist.
But , Pazhasi Raaja music is truly good when compare to the contemporary other musicians. The feel in a good sound system theaters is classic and when i watched the movie i was telling others i never seen a movie with a BGM having indian instruments like this. I can clearly hear the clear sounds of pulling bow strings artilary and armour bashings etc. Native sounds ? hear the song ambum kumbum.. and when Pazhasi king is arrested inside the fort and his army waiting outside.
Also one has to mention the sounds during the group suffereing during the rain, I litterly soaked in the music of raja sir and adamant to come out of the theatre even after the movie ended with names. I disgard the roaring BGM's like in Sivaji and Indhiran ,, the BGM should be apt for the situation.

Finally if you want to extract him to his efficiency sign him in big banner with good story ...
We will get ... I am sure...

Usha,

I too felt that it would be good to use tamil fonts(If you are choosing Tamil as your language) or write in English.

Perhaps when you write Tamil with English albhabets,it becomes difficult to decipher...

This is only a gentle request and you may have the liberty to choose whatever you are good at :)

Appushiva,

I believe that the clear sounds of pulling bow strings/artilary/armour bashings were handled by Resool and not by Raja. Someone can corret me if Iam wrong here.
The movie needs to be watched in a theatre where the sound quality is really good and I bet that raja has created wonders in many scenes .... I watched this movie in Innovative multiplex,Bangalore where the sound sytem was pathetic and came out of the theatre with a headache. Had to watch in PVR again to get better results...

but I digress....

Dear Raj,

Please be informed that the sound engineer never creates any sound he only alters, amplifies , reduce , mix in the right proportion of sounds . Here Mr. Resool Poo kutty will be modifying the sounds of what Raja's team had done in order to hear distinctively and accurately as best as possible. If there is no Raja's notes to players the sound engineer have nothing to do there .........
Further , the sound engineer for the PAA movie is also good and he got a special mention by raja sir during the PAA premiere in chennai Amitabji also acclaimed it.

Please watch the PR in 5.1 digital sound track theatre , you will have amazing experience like how i got in kuwait.

I think there is some confusion. Sound engineer is the person who records the songs/background score(music portion). But in the background, there will also be sounds that pertain to the scene and the objects used in the scene. What you are referring to here are those: Firing of a gun, pulling of bow strings etc.. or even the sound of a door. They are not recorded/composed by the music composer of the film. They are done separately.

raagas, that's right. It was Resul who did those effects - I remember him speaking about it specifically in interviews. His job is not about pure engineering of sound, he is actually responsible for creating sounds, too.

Guys,

What has IR been doing w.r.t big budget movies? It has been 15 years since he worked for Rajini, almost 7 years for Kamal (Mumbai Xpress), etc.

Nothing on the anvil as far as I know for Vijay, Surya, Vikram, Captain, Simbu, and other leading actors.

He has been reduced to this pathetic state. Perhaps, he or his diehard fans may not care about this, but the real losers are the millions of fans of melodies and rich music.....

MSV even in the twilight of his years used to compose for Rajini and Kamal (thanks to KB of course) on a consistent basis. What is wrong with these directors and actors? They have in fact sequestered IR for all intents and purposes.

He reminds me of TMS who literally came down to composing Murugar songs for lack of opportunities. He did a great job of course.

The IR who could conjure the listeners with his melodies composed out of thin air has long since ceased to exist, very unfortunately.

let me try and explain! bear with me:

1. IR's stance 1: "what i give is music - either accept it, or be good enough to come up with a better judgement of my music" - producers/directors "your music is great, phenomenal, inspired from deep within, very spiritual, but we wud like something that wud sell"

2. IR's stance 2: "am spiritually elitist - have reached a stage, where I dont care if it is some kuppan, suppan producer with cartloads of money and attitude, or it is Time-Warner company or for all that I care, some big production house in Hollywood - if my intuitive instincts honed by spiritual experiences i have had, propel me to accept a project/venture, I will do - otherwise, I wont - no matter how big the budget is"

3. IR's stance 3: "andha superstar, indha megastar, ivanga ellaam enna periya kombangala irundhaa yenakku yenna ?! I know music, and if they want good music, let them come and ask for it - but, i dont want my music to be given credit primarliy for its association with some star, period! my music is above and beyond stars and their status"

a combination of the above 3 reasons probably explain the present state of affairs!

He reminds me of TMS who literally came down to composing Murugar songs for lack of opportunities. He did a great job of course.

If i am not mistaken, the first and most popular murugan devotional songs were composed by G.Ramanadhan and sung by TMS when they were at their respective peak post Ambikapathy movie. Old timers can correct me..
Those songs still play through every murugan devotee's mind. I understand your agenda of an almost OCD like spill mud on IR with your verbal droppings, but you neednt have sullied the great man TMS or Lord Murugan in the process. It is a pity that you too are allowed the luxury of a keyboard and computer to type out this nonsense in this beautiful world.
