Baichung Bhutia is an Indian footballer. He is considered to be the torchbearer of Indian football in the international arena. Currently the captain of the Indian team, he plays for East Bengal Club. At the age of sixteen, he left school to join the professional East Bengal Club in Calcutta.

Cesc Fàbregas started his career as a trainee with Barcelona but was signed by Arsenal in September 2003 at the age of 16. Following injuries to key midfielders in the 2004–05 season, he established himself as Arsenal's starting central midfielder and playmaker. He went on to break several of the club's records, earning a reputation as one of the best young players for his position of his generation.

Daniel Alves da Silva is a Brazilian defender who currently plays as an attacking right back for Spanish La Liga club Barcelona and the Brazilian national team. Before joining the Catalan giants, Alves spent a successful six year spell with Sevilla, winning two UEFA Cups and the Copa del Rey with the Andalusian side. He joined Barcelona becoming the most expensive defender in history, and won The Treble in his first season with the club.

Fernando José is a Spanish footballer who plays for Premier League club Liverpool and the Spanish national team as a striker. He is also a Spanish international and made his debut for the country against Portugal in 2003. He has since participated in three major tournaments, UEFA Euro 2004, 2006 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2008. He did not score a goal at Euro 2004, but he scored three at World Cup 2006. Torres scored the winning goal for Spain in their 1–0 win over Germany in the UEFA Euro 2008 Final.

Gonzalo Gerardo "El is an Argentine footballer who plays for Real Madrid and the Argentine national team. He is renowned for his pace and low, powerful drives.

Andrés Iniesta Luján is a Spanish football attacking midfielder who currently plays for Spanish La Liga club Barcelona. His willingness to play anywhere on the pitch, coupled with a natural humility, has earned him the sobriquet El Ilusionista, El Anti-Galáctico and most recently San Andrés from the Spanish press.[ After the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney asserted that he believed the midfielder to be the best player in the world.

Lionel Andrés Messi ( is an Argentine footballer who currently plays for La Liga team Barcelona and the Argentine national team. Messi is considered to be one of the best football players of his generation,[having received several Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21.His playing style and ability have drawn comparisons to football legend Diego Maradona, who himself declared Messi his "successor".

Robin van Persie is a Dutch footballer who currently plays for Arsenal and Netherlands as a striker. In the national team he is occasionally deployed as a left/right winger as well. The son of two artists, Van Persie was encouraged to follow in his parents' footsteps, but he instead preferred football and joined SBV Excelsior's youth squad. He made his breakthrough at hometown club Feyenoord, where he spent three seasons and won the 2002 UEFA Cup. Disagreements with coach Bert van Marwijk culminated in a change of club and Van Persie moved to Premier League side He won the FA Community Shield and the FA Cup in his first season with the London club and won the 2006 Rotterdam Sportsman of the year award.

Ryan Joseph Giggs OBE is a Welsh footballer who has played for Manchester United for his entire club career. He established himself as a left-winger during the 1990s and continued in this position well into the 2000s, but he has been increasingly used in a deeper playmaking role in his later years. Giggs holds a host of football records, including that of being the most decorated player in English football history. On 16 May 2009, he became the first footballer to collect 11 top division English league title medals. Giggs was the first player in history to win two consecutive PFA Young Player of the Year awards (1992 and 1993) and is the only player to have played and scored in every single season of the Premier League since its inception.

Category: Bowler of the year (Cricket) 2009

With the increasing domination of batsman friendly pitches and less favorable conditions, bowlers are really having a tough time in the field these days. Only few bowlers manage to be a threat to batsmen and have some success against them.

The bowlers who got nominated for Best Bowler of the Year 2009 was

Harbhajan Singh (India)

James Anderson (England)

Mitchell Johnson (Australia)

Peter Siddle (Australia)

Greame Swann (England)

Shakib Al Hassan (Bangaladesh)

Let's see who gets the wicket here...

Many fans are common time-pass fans who don't care about the history and greatness of the club. They are the reason for bad name to the club. But, the club have fair share of knowledgeable fans who are not just glory-hunters. Glory Hunters will support United when United win trophies, switch their loyalty to Chelsea / Arsenal / Liverpool / Any other club based on results. Ennoda officela kooda I have fought with lots of such guys. When Barca beat United, many were making fun of me and United. When I asked them to name atleast 4-5 first teamers for Barca, they were blinking

Just curious...what is a club ? How does one 'like/dislike' it for reasons. For instance in cricket I can never bring myself to like CSK like I naturally like TN and India.

- location being a natural 'identity' is one thing
- second being I don't think much of the format, but we'll ignore that for now

But there are some other identities commingled with them that may be related to location

Aussies are arrogant , they cheat and sledge. I hate all of them except Brett Lee and Gilchrist.

Kiwis are great triers, they make the most with what they have etc.

Do clubs have such attributes ? With defection permissible how 'real' and permanent are those attributes ? If you have a favourite player who moves to another club, what happens ?

Perhaps this questions are naive. But from the outside it really stumps me how clubs whose players, coaches etc. are all transient and are 'equally' foreign to you guys still manage to draw strong sense of identification from you all.

that too some guys are overly crazy in club football.paakave aacharyama irukkum!

Yes Sir. Each club will have unique identity and history, rivalries among clubs (Kathi kuthu, kalavaram ellaam nadakkum). For example, if you ask United fans like me (True fans who cares for the club irrespective of results or trophies), we will say that we are proud about things like the Great Sir Matt Busby, Munich Disaster, Resurrection and the first English team to win in Europe after losing 8 first teamers in that munich air crash, never say die attitude (CL 1999 final to top and countless occassions in Europe and EPL), Fergie's fledglings (Keegan's Rant and we won with KIDS), Fergie's construction of brillinat teams one after another etc. KG can explain for his beloved Arsenal Club.

"But from the outside it really stumps me how clubs whose players, coaches etc. are all transient and are 'equally' foreign to you guys still manage to draw strong sense of identification from you all."
Idhu cinema maadhiridhaan. Namakku pudicha hero sandaila jeichaa naamale jeicha maadhiri. Aanaa namakku andha hero edhukku pudikkudhu? Maybe for his style, acting, sense of humour, screen presence etc. Similarly for clubs, we can correlate them with some of the important philosophies in our life - Fight till the last, make winning a habit etc.

I've been watching football since 94, but I'd say it became serious after 98. I was playing football from young age, had been in office quarters and school. So I always watch it on DD, Espn, and few obscure channels in early days. They telecast Euros and WCs for free, then. Italian football without commentary was telecast (Delayed and never Live) in the mornings. Primiera liga with spanish commentary in evenings. EPL was live telecast at times and wasn't the best league in the world then. One of my favorite players was Dennis Bergkamp and he signed for Arsenal in 95. I started following the league somewhere in between, see I hadn't been too much of regular coz I was in school. And my parents didn't let me watch tv all the time. I fell in love with Arsenal FC for some (irrational) reason to begin with. Bergkamp made them look familiar, I suppose. I backed the team unconditionally, and it has grown to be a passion. It's not that the club has no redeeming qualities, but as love is, there is an element of childlike obsession in here. Not as childishly to gloat about winning trophies or anything. Maybe a real-life incarnation of disconnected, but endearing, figments from a distant dream. It's like Jim et Jules being aroused by a statue, perfect in their eyes (even in its obvious imperfections), and both see Jeanne Moreau later, and obsessed over her. It's like that. I had no fault of Arsenal, I even began to see imperfections in a different, positive perceptive. Nothing to do with its history or glory (although today I'm very much grateful for the club's growth over the years). I think right after Dicanio-Vieira incident in 98, I remember swearing against him and Sheff Wednesday. (He pushed the referee in the game.) That would be the exact period where the unconditional love & support was crystallized to rock solid diamond, that is, I was convinced. Looking back, the geometrical precision & vibes of Highbury pitch, the stands, the clock, the red and white jersey, the kind of football, the players, etc would all contribute. But then it's only in hindsight and afterthought.

It's no different from Indian-based cricket-followers who support Ozzie or Kiwis for different reasons. Except that supporting a football team, is on a whole new level of passion, and elation. And if the club loses or suffers, it's like dagger to heart.

The key word here is "passion".

Most of it is marketed by Espnstar these days. When I was watching, none of the schmucks presented the games. I had the freedom of choosing my own. But these days they breed "glory-hunting" mentality to followers of the game. By default, fans aren't really "fans" in truest sense, they are just conditioned to being one.

I was watching an Argentinian move recommended by Appu, it's nominated for Oscar. And stars the eclectic, Ricardo Darin, one of my favorite star-actors. In a scene, there is an exchange between the characters which is quite relevant to this discussion. I'll try to get it.

Good discussion.. With me being a sports fan, I started watching football only a year ago even though I went to the bar when Liverpool was playing champions league finals some years ago up north in Newcastle.

But the real fantasy came in last year when my roommate was a hardcore chelsea fan and was into football all the time. To add, there was another friend, my neighbor who was so obsessed with Arsenal (BPL) and Barca (Europe). They both were soo informative that it got stuck in my mind.. Ofcourse the other reason is the country that I live in.. Its either cricket or football.. and no cricket during winter and no other indoor games here :( like NFL, NBA.. So one ought to get interested in football as the talks here in UK are either about weather or about football

As KG said, I am just a football fan who support the game played by Arsenal. I have heard so much about them and have loved their passion towards the game. I mean, the average age of the team is 24 ( if I am not wrong) when they were playing against the average age of Man U of 28 ..

One day, I think, along with my son, I will be a Arsenal craze with tickets to Emirates stadium whenever there are home games... but damn it costs 40 pounds for a cheap ticket here :(

Vivs sonna madhiri ennaiyum sollirukaango

" neeyellam football papeenne enakku ippothanda theriyum...idhula club football veraya" and that too when I talk about the technicalities my friends remain seated with their eyebrows raised :)

How's the reception for NFL in UK?.

I know that they play one game in the Wembly stadium every year. Other than that how about the tv reception in uk?.

Feeyaar spoke on behalf of many. Kid and sathya and vv, thanks for the explanation.
But a key question is unanswered. Given the transient nature of clubs, how does a fan from outside sustain support? Let's take an exampl - when I was in london, for the same reason as av, football follow panna vendiyadha pochu. I liked this guy zola and vialli and started, say, suppoting chelsea. But avan ponappuram, club mela interest illai. Ippo sachin retire aayittaa apdi bcci team-ai kaathuka vuttuduvoma?

Arsenal were this dour, dull, grind the results team under george graham. Annikku arsenalai veruthavan, innikku arsenal beetiful football velayadaraannu support pannuvaana? if yes, leave such a fan - clearly he is not a club soda passion man. If no, the question is how? How can you sustain a feeling against or for a club when nationality or local factors are not involved - I am talking about, say, when the whole raison d'etre for supporting that club is jettisoned by the club. Epdi?

Innum solla pona , sachinkappuram naane indiavai support pannuvenaanu konjam doubt-a dhaan irukku

But epdiyum years of brainwashed nationalism will kick in so I may continue - that is understandable but how do you translate that to clubs?

Point taken Plum. When u consider national team or IPL for that matter, we may support BCCI or CSK due to Nationalism or Ooru paasam. Aanaa, why do we support Man United / Arsenal / Liverpool? Good question! As KG mentioned above, when we started following football we associate with a club based on style / players / Managers. This is purely based on our individual taste and preferences. But, after the departure of that particular player / manager and downfall of the team (If it happens), most people tend to continue support due to Loyalty.

"the unconditional love & support was crystallized to rock solid diamond". The support for the team is not just a hobby, but after a certain stage it becomes a habit and it is always in ur mind, no matter what happens on the pitch or boardroom.

Naama close friend / brother / son / daughter / dad oru thappu senjuttalum we will continue to support him / her. Similarly at one stage we will think the club to be a part of our lives. That is where the unconditional love and support kicks in.

Also, I think most tend to support state and national teams because of some mental conditioning (local and regional factors) Football clubs (or any team for that matter) is never reflection of identity, at least to global fans, we have thugs to politicians to actors to bourgeoisie to working class to slums (I saw a docu, where fans in Nigeria watch Arsenal together, and they sing the club songs by heart, a sight to cherish) supporting football clubs. We can't say they pick on specific characteristics. We cannot dissect into parts. We tend to see objects of desire and passion as a "whole" and not in parts. Even the negatives become positives. As I said,

It's like Jim et Jules being aroused by a statue, perfect in their eyes (even in its obvious imperfections), and both see Jeanne Moreau* later, and obsessed over her. It's like that. I had no fault of Arsenal, I even began to see imperfections in a different, positive perceptive.

*-Doppelganger of the statue, to clarify.

Maybe you can call it the highest form of love. The club is no longer external to u, but it is a part of you - like ur blood.

This is no longer a hobby, but becomes ur habbit and character. So, as KG mentioned, at this stage everything will become likeable and u will start loving every single aspect of the club.

The exchange in the Argentinian film (which leads two investigators, Pablo and Benjamin, to the suspect):
[tscii:6674c40bfe]

(The scene in Bar)
Pablo: I started thinking about guys. Guys in general. Not just this guy, but... Guys in general. "The" guy. The guy can do anything to be different. But there's one thing he can't change. Not him, not you, not anybody. Take me, for example. I'm young, I have a good job, a wife who loves me...And like you always say, I keep throwing my life away in dives(alcohol addiction) like this. Many times you've asked, "Why are you here, Pablo?"
Benjamin: Why?
Pablo: You know why, Benjamin? Because it's my passion.I love coming here, getting drunk, slugging it out with anyone who pisses me off... I love it.
.
..
.....
(Now they decrypt a letter written by suspect, by Pablo's bar-mate Rotary, in the bar, who cracks the suspect as a "Racing" fan from the letter. That's an Argentinian football club)
...
.
.
Pablo: Notary, what is Racing to you?
Notary: A passion.
Pablo: Even after 9 years without a championship?
Notary: A passion is a passion.
Pablo: You see, Benjamin? A guy can change anything. His face, his home, his family, his girlfriend, his religion, his God. But there's one thing he can't change. He can't change his passion.[/tscii:6674c40bfe]

(The scene cuts to a matchday when Atlético Huracán meets Racing at home in Buenos Aires. They catch the suspect in visitors section )

Thanks folks.

I think I kinda got what you are saying.

I was in the same school for 11 years. First year in college, first month oru prachanai. Some scuffle with boys of the other college who were at our college gates pelting stones (Kadhir movie scene like). One VP - we had about half a dozen - got hit and some boys got agitated. "namma VP-ya adichuttaanunga da &^&^%$***". (sAdhAraNa naaL-la ivanE VP-ai adichuruppAn 'ngradhu vEra vishayam !)

Some of classmates got worked up. Some of my classmates tried to get worked up. Being conscious of that moment of dispassion and lack of identity - lasted three years - or rather, ever since.

iththOda suyapuraanaththai niruthikarEn.

Natural conditioning is such a headstart. I am not sure I can be as passionate about something which I know is conscious choice of mine (or I am aware of the roots of ).

Uh oh !

Thanks K_g and sathya. puriyudhu. Further comments from me only after Sachin's retirement - i have a nagging doubt if even natural conditioning will help me support BCCI after Rahul, VVS and Sachin retire.

Category: Best Cricket team of the year 2009

This is a tough contest as no team can claim to be the best in all three forms of game. India became the No.1 team in Tests, but had a mixed year with respect to ODIs. While Australia continued to dominate ODI scene, they are no more the test team that ruled the roost for nearly two decades. Sri Lanka had a decent year in all three forms of game and Pakistan is the new Twenty20 Champions. Trinidad & Tobago got into the polls based on their spirited performance in Champions League T20. Who is going to be the winner among these...

Australia
India
Sri Lanka
Pakistan
Trinidad & Tobago

And so we are at the final stages of the Awards! :D

Predictably Pakistan could not get any vote and was literally shown the exit by Hubbers. Trinidad & Tobago managed to get 10% of the votes.

The real contest was among Australia, India and Sri Lanka! Although it looks like we have a clear winner, anything can happen....

SriLanka (15%) and Australia (21%) were ரொம்ப நல்லா ஆடுநீங்க தம்பிd by the Hubbers who voted India to the top spot with 51% of the votes.

2009 was nice and sunny for India.
They had a successful tour of NZ
Won the trination tournament involving NZ and SL before being rained out of the ICC trophy.
Though they managed to lose a home ODI series to Australia the dominant memory of the year is likely to be the back to back innnings defeats inflicted on SL that pushed them to the top Spot.
To peek into the future a bit, they have also quickly doing away with an immediate challenge to the spot.

Congratulations Dhoni and Team.
