Lost Innocence

As I grow into the sunrise of my being
can the memory of your yesterday
guide me through my painful tomorrows
Can your lips utter the words
that will be the balm for my tortured soul
Just as the wings of an imprisoned butterfly
beat futilely against the walls of its glass prison
so is my being trapped in a material condition
The petals of a withering rose
fall slowly to the ground
Pluto pirouettes gracefully on its axis
The soft darkness of a moonlit night
in modesty cover my naked dreams

The stars smile distantly

Can we ever dream the innocent dreams of children?
Can we hold the universe in our cupped hands,
and savour the fragrance of paradise
Can we wipe away the tears of angels and
console death as she weeps
Can we catch the falling star
as it plummets from the heavens
Can we hitch a ride on the tail
of a blazing comet
Can we bathe our bodies
in the scented waters of the Milky Way
and strew rose petals on Saturn
Let the gentle winds of love
ruffle the feathers of our fragile wings
and listen to the flute of God play a sad tune
Can I ever be what I was?
Can I ever be innocent again?
