I like Mano too. Just that he sounded horrible in this particular film.

The fact that Mano always tries to immitate SPB (& ends up pathetically) must be the reason PS hates him this much.

That aside, Mano did have some very good numbers.

BTW , I met him in restaurant in London,, not many recognised him... he seemed friendly ,... may that was the 'Jack Daniel' he was drinking :lol2:

No No, I dont hate him at all ... he makes a mockery out of him self doing that, remember arunmozhi tried this one but he stopped straight away knowing it doesn't work out..

any one remember 'Kovai' Soundararajan... he tried to imitate TMS, and he was a good imitator, he knew his limits and stuck to it.

look at unnimenon another Dr.KJY wannabe :lol2:

Thanks to Dr.IR and Dr.SPB.... During Anjali film time SPB sir had throat operationn and was unable to sing for months and months, Mano use to work in IR troop as a helping hand... and he was big fan of SPB and a imitator,so IR gave him chance, then we all know what happend :rotfl:

mano is not just another imitator...he has sung lots of great songs ..one of the prominent singers of his time singers..prolly next to spb and jesudas.

he imitates spb..right..but he is unique in his own way

Another dig - I think ARR used him extremely well. I like all Mano-ARR songs.

From last film thread.
Veera.

The Musical. Rajini Rocks. Raja Rocks. Roja Rocks.....okay, the last one was for rhyming reasons don't take it seriously :D More on the Rajini's thread.

But seriously, the songs were awesome and I am talking also about the smaller ones:
Aatula Annakili,
Munti Munthi vinayagaree
Kannai Thirantha.

Then the other big ones.

Fun and folksy
Vadi Vettalai pakka
Adi Panthalilee.

Naughty
Madattile Kanni Madatile (that Shankar/Harris stole for Anniyan)

Romantic, with tinge of sadness:
Konji Konji Alaigalooda.

And of course, the most majestic of it all (that probably inspired the picturisation of all the dance songs in Muthu later).
Malai Kovil Vasalil.....

Then, of course, Rajini. There is still the performer in him in this film, may it be comedy scene (Govinda scene had my wife laughing till she teared) or somber ones. Too bad, this film is sandwiched between the Baashas and the Padaiyappas that it might be forgotten. I hope not.
Agree with each and every word. There are around 10 songs in the film and I love all of them (Mano's gruff voice not withstanding). And Rajini was so natural in the 2nd half. Reminds you of Guru Sishyan :D

Ivangala yellam yaarappa paada vachathu, karumum

His songs to credit are Muqala Muqabala, the rest are all Pathetic!

SPB illaina... maththavanga ellorum pathetic'ah

I like most of Mano's songs :)

I still remember an article in ThinaThanthi about how disgraceful this movie was for TamilNadu Police & went on to say that how MGR's cop movies used to glorify their department blah blah!!!

Either way, it was poorly executed movie.
Cinematography was highlight of the movie (which was for any Balu's movie). I remember for whatever few stunts the movie had, RK's dupe had a bigger role even for riskless scenes (not sure if RK couldn't take part for some reason).

I chose Mullum Malarum because it was great movie overall. The performance of Rajini in thalapathy is as good as his performance in Mullum Malarum. But Rajini's acting and IR's music were the only saving graces of otherwise a mediocre movie. Good to know that both performances are front-runners in the poll.

   Definitely one of my favorite thalaivar films. Btw, no words about the music/songs :lol2:

IR's domination was so complete and consistency was impeccable those days in TFM. That probably made the reviewers tired and they chose to simply not talk about music unless it was by someone else (like TR who was the lone opposer those days).

Definition for "taken for granted" :-) (' :-) )

Polladhavan (1980).

Plot holes as big as Rajini's bellbottoms. Like, where was the Letchumi's nephew when the murder took place? This and many question that should not bother you.

It's a wonder how film watching experience changes with the company you keep, in this case my wife who is a big fan of Rajini's comedy.

Yes, believe it or not, the film has its rib-tickling moments, namely the flashback with Sri Priya. Rajini pretending to be injured and getting Sri Priya to nurse him back had some really hilarious moments.

Then, the serious side of course, when Letchumi confronts Rajini and tries to either run away or complain to the police. Nice cat and mouse game, with Rajini nicely showing off dark side. Speaking of police, there could have been passing of baton thing between V. Gopalakrishnan to Delhi Ganesh to play the stereotype cop, luckily DG became a better actor.

Speaking of V. Gopalakrishnan, his reasoning behind the accusation that Letchumi was the killer could have made Sherlock HOlmes turn in his grave, if at all he was real.

All in all, it's Rajini's showcase. Beginning as a real menace, a taunt, an animalistic being, he later starts to show his more human side, but not without the heavy dose of "style", those trademark speedy walk, gestures, and red-tinted sunglass even inside the house at night .

Can anyone confirm whether this is a remake? I have a feeling it is. Other than that, if this film was done ten years earlier, it would have been easily a NT film, coz Mukta Sreenivasan, the director, was making this sort of film with NT.

Conclusion: After revisits, this thirty year old film still works albeit some stupid moments.

- Vetri Nitchayam song ends
- Rajini becomes president for some association supported by an awesome bgm by thenisai thenral
- The next scene... Sarathbabu comes down thru the escalator & Rajini goes up.. in the background most remembered dialogue of the film... once it ends.. they show just the hand of Rajini .. sodukku pOttu calls sarathbabu ... no lengthy dialogue.. just 2 words.. enough to show the power of the characted.. There's something about Sarathbabu and the whole staircase/escalator/ascending/descending thing going on in Rajini's films.

Take Muthu, he is first scene coming down the staircase. HR just mentioned the escalator thing in Annamalai, then in Velaikkaran, we again see him coming down the stairs (or is it lift?).

Then, recently when I revisited Mullum Malarum, guess what? Remember the trolley scene where Rajini first realises Sarath Babhu is his boss and he had to ask the folks to get off the trolley, and send his boss down the hill? Yeah, the trolley stops (deliberately) and Sarath has to walk down the hill. Interesting, I must say :D

"sambaathikka aayiram vazhi irukku.. athukku intha punithamaana arasiyala bayan paduthaathiiiga"

grouch,
1. Siva was a flop so I doubt if anyone else sat through till the end to ask this question - till now
As the great man would say "idhu varaikkum indiavilEyE, En indha WorldlEyE yaarukkumE varAdha sandhEgam unakku vandhirukku"
2. If I remember right, the project was sandwiched between other mega projects for Rajni; towards the release, there were delays, difficulties for Kavithalaya in completing/releasing the movie etc. The shooting might have been stop-start, and I guess everyone concerned lost interest at some point.

I have been pracharam-ising this movie for years. About 15 years ago, suddenly a theatre decided to re-release old films, among them was Adimai Penn and Tappu Thalanggal (the others did not interest us at that time).

In retrospect, I am thinking what the theatre owner was smoking when he decided to re-release a totally unmarketable film like TT. But boy, am I grateful for that dastardly deed!

I watched it with my brother. And both of us came back, speechless…remember this was the time when film industry has totally changed.

TT is a crude, in your face, love it or hate it type of film. KB must have some leftover money in his Murukku jar and decided lets just use it to film something cheap using a brilliant script and came up with TT.

The cameraman must have had bad back after shooting this because it is clearly not a normal flexi-cam, but just normal cam forced to be flexi. Jerky, uneven, and sometimes a bit out of focus, it did convery a reality that we don’t want to see. But we are forced to be there, with those low-lives and their lives.

When some actress is praised for being daring to play a prostitute, especially those looking like Miss World contenders, I scoff at them. They should first watch this film and decided that it is best that they pursue a career that requires more glamourous version of selling skin. Saritha in her debut does a great job. She is believable as a low class prostitute.

And Rajini! Crass, brutish, and unpredictable, and with a dose of humour that make you feel guilty even laughing about it, he comes off perfectly well as a low-life goon for hire. Ranks alongside Mullum Malarum as his best performance eve, his effortless performance should be a text book lesson.

And of course, Kamal makes two hilarious appearance and lightens down the situation. (I hear he insisted that he want to be in it).

Many has forgotten this film, including some of the newer Rajini film who probably never heard of it. Its time to remind them. Its also time to remind Rajini about his lost talent. [/tscii:07eae0ba7d]

Thappu Thalangal ie. "Wrong Notes", is a Tamil film, directed by K.Balachander & produced by R.Venkataraman. It was dubbed in Kannada as well, and released as Thappida Thaala.[1]

[edit] Plot
It features Rajanikanth as Devu, a local thug whose weapon of choice is a bicycle chain he sports casually around the neck. Devu charges Rs.30 to slice a finger, Rs.300 to chop a hand, Rs.3000 for the leg, and ten times as much to dispose off the whole body. On one of his nightly rounds, Devu is pursued by a cop and seeks refuge at a whorehouse run by a hooker Sarasu, played to perfection by Saritha. Despite her vehement protests, he stays put and leaves only at daybreak, but her persistent cough stays with him. At a theatre, Devu watches an advertisement for Glycodin Cough Syrup and proceeds to buy her a bottle. Devu and Sarasu bond over the cough syrup and philosophize late into the night, exchanging notes on their immoral lifestyles.

Devu's assault on a trade union leader delivering medicine to a critically ill worker leads to a mishap. Watching the wailings of the widow of the worker, Devu is traumatized and breaks down at Sarasu's place. In an inspired moment, he suggests they remap their lives and chart a moral course. Sarasu is attracted by the notion of giving up prostitution and leading a normal life as Devu's wife, though she wonders if they'll be able to pull it off. The couple go to great lengths to secure a job for Devu and lead a normal life, but there are too many skeletons in the closet. Devu is no longer feared for his might, and Sarasu's past clientele continue to haunt the joint. Sarasu gets a loan for Devu from his evil brother Soma, who continues to harass her on that pretext. In a particularly traumatic sequence of events, Sarasu is raped by Soma as a helpless Devu watches, pinned down by Soma's henchmen. The couple resolve to repay Soma's loan, and Devu undertakes a botched robbery attempt. Devu is imprisoned and in his absence, Sarasu has an abortion. The couple's plans for normality never attain fruition. The inevitable return to lives of vice is especially tragic and heartbreaking.

Balachander excels at the verite portrayal of the daily drama in the lives of pimps, hookers, and their varied clientele, as well as the politicians who hire thugs like Devu to achieve their aims through violence. Devu's inherent goodness is contrasted with his "evil twin", a stepbrother Soma who thwarts his every attempt at morality and finally succumbs at Devu's hands. Kamalhaasan has an interesting cameo as a Hindi speaking client of Sarasu. Balachander skewers middle-class morality and takes potshots at the hypocrisy of do-gooders. In the final analysis, the film is an indictment of society at large, for not allowing lesser mortals to rejoin society and return to a life of normality.

KamalHassan has done a guest appearance in this movie.

:exactly: There's also a scene in Chandramukhi where he has to leave to see his patient (right before the interval).
The moment he sees Nayanthara, he would go to her and say something like, "unge kitte konje over-a nadanthukitten" (laughs) "athelam maranturungge" (referring to the disturbance he gave) then he brings down his shades..."enna maranturadingge.."

After all these years, he still has not lost that touch, I must say! Rajini definitely has a natural flair when it comes to romantic scenes.

40/100 for Guru Sishyan is unpardonable. Vikatan is extremely inconsistent. A much worse film, murattukkaalai gets more than this and I don't even want to talk about the *gems* these days which got around 40.

Even in the 2nd half there was no dearth of funny scenes. Only the last 20 mins or so is ordinary. Guru Sishyan should have got around 47.

They were good till 10 years back barring few glitches. There were days we used to watch movie based on only vikatan reviews. They were normally harsh on masala movies irrespective of actors. Arguably Kamal had greatest success rate with vikatan reviews when compared with anyone else in Tamil Industry till 10 years back. (He deserved it more than anyone else is the truth). Even his masala movies faced high criticism. (For example SKV 43/100 and Kakki sattai 39/100)

As you said there is no dearth of funny scenes in GS. Agreed the film is a masala but whats the big deal. It made you and me and most of us laugh and it still works. The film has a good supporting cast in the form of Prabhu, Vinu, Radharavi, Cho and Manorama. Enna irundha than ivanga othupaanga nnu puriala. And i agree with you Murattu Kaalai is no comparison to GS. GS is funny-fantastic.

As a matter of fact 16 vayathinilae at 62.5 marks is highest ever by vikatan. Vikatan has its own standard for rating. IMO other kamal haasan films such as nayagan, mahanadhi and hey ram deserved more marks than 16 vayathinilae got only 60 each if that is the case.

16v aLavukku maRRathula either orinigalityO or nativityO irukkAdhu! You can say technically a little bit week but no other KH film has touched the heart of majority in TN. (I'm from the group that unless a film satifies majority, it could max be called good but never great. Disclaimer - the corollary is NOT TRUE!

mahAnadhi / HR were commercially far far below 16v and nAyakan too didn't have that nook and corner reach! TIME fellow doesn't know anything about TN -why, they didn't know much about even India till a few years back - and so his certificate doesn't mean much in this comparative analysis)

what originality/nativity was missed in mahanadhi?

nativityna village movies mattum than nativitiya?

Standing the test of time is one important factor for a movie to be called as a GREAT movie - I dont think 16 V stands above moives like Mahanadhi in that aspect..even today - "amma naan pass ayiyen"..that veterenary doctor .. Standing the test of time is one important factor for a movie to be called as a GREAT movie -

Viv,
Like I said, I belong to an "average" movie appreciator group and not a connoisseur:-)

mahAnadhi wasn't a big success even at the time of its release - standing the test of time comes much after that (barring a few brilliant portions, it was a bore and drag IMO - tons of 80's Malayalam movies were with similar themes but a lot more crispier, that's one of the reason I couldn't feel this 90's product a "fresh" one). Unnecessary & too many songs, which were also ordinary by IR standards is another reason. Not even one comes to my mind today - other than the sriranga ranga temple song - which, for an IR/KH movie - from my PoV - is nothing short of shocking!

I never felt that way for 16V songs (neither unnecessary not outdated). Also, even when I watched recently on dvd, 16V hasn't lost lusture :-)

Well, taste differs. In any case, AV can give marks only at a point of time :-)

Updating my Thalaivar DVD collection with the following movies (will be getting these 6 movies this weekend) - Thanga Magan, Padikkathavan, Thalapathy, Mannan, Annamalai, and Arunachalam.

Well, I had originally ordered about 20 of them, but these were the ones that the store had in their inventory at this time. I've asked them to get the other ones for me as soon as they can!
