Song: Thirupaatham Paarthen
Film: Manitha Jaathi
Singer: GA and Chitra
Year: 1989

This is unusual song as IR used GA for a melody number. good to hear, Chitra is supporting GA like anything on this song. I feel both of them were singing with some control on their rendition.

Song:Oranjaaram Ushaar
Film: Kakkai Chiraginiley
Singer: SPB
Year:1999

What else I can say...SPB...SPB....SPB...SPB...., IR gave more space for SPB to fill in this song and SPB also giving expression for each and every word of this song..

Song theme..seems to bring down the angry of one person..Song pattern is doing that job in a very good manner.

Again the same SPB, இப்படி உருகி, குழஞ்சு பாட இவரால மட்டும்தான் முடியும்.

IR used violin, guitar and flute in a appropriate way in the interludes.

""யாரோ பாட காதல் பாட்டு போட்டு போட்டு அலுது போச்சு.."

I felt SPB is dominating all instruments by the way he singing.. :)

IR is always spl for Kamal. This is an different and funniest song which has the theme of pattukottaiyaar paadal.

Lively sung by Kamal and variety of thalams makes this song very different.

Usha,

'alangatti' Fantastic song. Very typical Raja of the 80s. Has the Mayamalavagowla tinge. Especially the first interlude. What an interlude it is!! The entry of harmonium is superb. Very free flowing tune. One more song to prove how the instrumentalists have enjoyed themselves under Raja. Everyone had a role to play. Thanks for digging up such treasures.

I have one request. Can you dedicate the next few SOTDs to the songs of 2000s. Tamil / Telugu / Malayalam/ Kannada. I am sure you will be able to dig out more gems from the 80s but I think it will also be good to showcase what Raja did in the 2000s. This was the time when most Raja fans themselves were not willing to give his tunes the time of the day. It will be nice to reevaluate those tunes now.

Song starts with bell and nice chorus...both the singers sung it very well....especially Jayachandran , the way he pronounce Tamil gives an impression that pronounce like 1st student learning Tamil like "ஆழுத்தம் திருத்தமக" ( once we get into comfort zone we use to pronounce in our convenient way)

good interludes.I believe this was directed by RV. Udhayakumar and film was not hit like song..or songs too were not hit.

DR,

An outstanding pick. 'arudhe arudhe' is a song which probably has not been heard a lot, even by Raja fans. The song has some pathos built into it and the lyrics are great as well. 'uthirum kurudhi pookalai chidharum evide jeevitam'. Even I can understand this Malayalam :) I have not seen the movie or the song but going by the music and the lyrics, the song seems to be set in midst of all round destruction and the sounds of aircraft (?) in one of the interludes adds to this feeling. As usual Jesudas does a fantastic job in giving expression to this superb tune. If someone hasn't heard this yet, they must do so soon. Here is an online link:

DR,

It is a real pity that much of Raja's Malayalam output is not available on CDs. There was once a compilation of around 15 or so Raja songs which was probably released by HMV. I have been searching for that CD but no luck whatsoever. I have told everyone that if they get one of Raja's Malayalam CDs of the 80s or 90s they can buy one for me without hesitation. I will pay double the CD cost :D

For the first time trying to hear 'manjal poosum' after deliberately shutting off the Malayalam 'Friends' from my mind. My favourite in the album still remains 'poonkatre'.

Plum,

Very true about Malayalam 'Friends' and 'sivamallipoove'. It took me probably a couple of years to give 'manjal poosum' a good listen. The mere starting notes of 'sivamallipoove' is enough to get me into a state of ecstasy. One of the great synth works of Raja.

Song: Oru Naal Oru Kanavu || Roja Poonthottam
Film: Kannukkul Nilavu
Singer: KJJ || Unni & Anuradha Sriram

I am not able to choose one from the above two songs.

Oru Naal Oru Kanavu: simple tune, simple strings usage, simple beats but why this song is hitting to our heart with so forcefully? wonderful song.

Roja Poonthottam: Unni has done extensively good on this song. hell lot of instruments are doing magic through out the song in bits and pieces.(It reminds me the word of IR during the live prog of NBW "music should be fresh whenever you listen it")

Actually this album is one of the master piece of IR becasue all the songs are awesome, after huge gap I listened the songs and enjoyed every bit....

beautiful usage of synth and orchestration...on all the songs..

Its seems Raja and Fazil were in beautiful environment during the composition of these songs.

suresh,

I am with you. I felt latha is outstanding :) on this song due to her age...very good singer before hum aapke hain koun.

My opinion might be biased (from all the music that i had been listening to since i was a kid), but for me, the best of Lata stopped in early 80s. Her voice changed a lot in 80s (it did change in 70s too, compared to 50s, but composers did still used it to advantage since compositions have also changed). But once mid 80s arrived, the magnitude of change was enormous that I felt, she should have retired at that time itself (with due & humble respects to her phenomenal talent). My personal opinion though.

And somehow I feel IR couldnt ever give a jewel of song to Lata. He did give few. I thoroughly enjoyed "Vazha Osai" or "Engirundho" or "Inge pon" etc. But..there hasnt been any GIGANTIC, out of the world composition that would befit her talent. He composed exceptional numbers for Asha Bhonsle though that makes you go "Wow!".. but somehow, he couldnt come up with equally phenomenal numbers for Lata. Vazha Osai comes close, but even thats a duet, where beauty of the song is co-shared by his orchestration, SPB etc. But there hasnt been a "This song must be heard for Lata Alone" kind of song... where the singer leaves an imprint more or atleast as much as composer. Asha did leave an imprint in songs like "Dilwale" (Mahadev) or "Mazhai Megham" (Sakkara Panthal) - a song as beautiful as dew drops on a winter morning.

Again My personal opinion though. :-)

raagas and thumburu,

You are both right. My feeling is that it has to do with the way the song is tuned by a particular music director. Somehow I cannot think of P Susheela singing some of the gems sung by Janaki or Chitra. Or for that matter TMS singing the songs sung by SPB and KJY. I think Raja's tuning more suited his favorite singers, SPB, KJY, MV, SJ and Chitra. The one absolute gem for Susheela was 'vata patra sayiki'. Remember this was tuned for the lyrics and not the other way around. I think it is the same with Lata as well. Raja's tunes probably needed SJ and Asha more than Lata.

I thought 'Karpoora bommai' ondru from keladi kanmani was a P suseela special that could sit easily into her top 50 songs.
Thinking of IR - PSuseela combo - one easily gets an impression that IR couldnt get the monstrous versatility and 'voice acting' that he got out of SJ. Psuseela did mostly what was required without much fuss but played it safe when it came to 'acting' in between singing.

This was one of the albums which I had ignored when it came, probably influenced by the music of those times and thinking the recording / beats etc were not upto mark. As with many such albums of those times, I now realize my taste had taken leave of me then :)

This particular song suits Raja's voice very well and the pathos is brought out beautifully. The violin arrangements, now famous due to 'Paa', add to the overall beauty of this piece.

There is something very emotional about this song.It caught me the very first time i heard it.I dont know about the film but I think this song deserved a fantastic director and a fantastic film, as platform, to really shine out to musiclovers. I loved it. Its got depth!

Iyya enna aasa, a song in COA, is one the freakiest songs by IR.I dont know how many music admirers missed this stunner of a song. Its loaded with wonderful synth work. Its got an infectious tune and extraordinary interludes.the keyboard chords are typical IR styled chords. The small synth pieces that punctuate(or cut out) after each line in Charanams - killer idea. This song requires a whole big post. The chords are amazing. And when the whole sound and tone of the song is in a particular mood and of electronic texture, he inserts a solo violin suddenly.Unexpected! After that it is a whole synth celebration, but the phrases are trademark IR.

A highly Underrated composition!

One more peaceful song. Nominally based on Hamir Kalyani. I am ashamed to say that when I heard this song first, it did not make any impression on me. Infact I saw this movie. The saving grace in the movie was the comedy of Kounder. None of the songs made an impression on me in the theatre, being smitten by the 'Raja is not modern enough' bug. I guess that happened to many people during those times.

Special thanks to you for bringing these back to limelight. There are very few instances when it would be a pleasure to admit your foolishness or accept your lack of judgement. Accepting my bad judgement regarding Raja's music of late 90s and 2000s belongs to this category.

DR,

Lovely selection. You cant go wrong with a Raja Malayalam album :)

The prelude itself sets the tone with its softness. The pallavi is again softness personified. The flute, the violins and the piano in the first interlude add to the overall effect. Sreekumar does a nice job. Nice free flowing first charanam but it is the pallavi which always attracts me. Especially the way it goes from 'yathra pogaan' back to the start.

The second interlude is totally different with the guitar (synth guitar) and the drums playing a large role. I guess this has got something to do with the picturization. The second charanam is totally different from the first one. It is must faster and has a different rhythm but Raja maintains the melody and wonderfully loops back to the pallavi.

This film also has two other outstanding songs. 'virahamay vipalamay' Superb song. The other song is the Madhyamavathi based 'kathirum kothi'.

DR,

A nice song selection. The charanams are extremely sweet. Somehow heard only the more popular 'chinna rasave' from this movie. Swarnalatha does a very nice job. My only complaint is that there is too much of 'ich' sound in the song :)

C'mon suresh, he added the clause there, for which i asked him whether he intended the pun :-)

I dont know if Periyamma was original in tamil or dubbed? But it is not Peddharikam. Peddharikam itself was a remake from a malayalam film (that was recently remade into Hindi "Hulchul", by Priyadarshan)

Yes, that is my conpees, too. Peddharikam was a Bhanumathy starrer remade from Malayalam(Chronic Bachelors?Or was that Engal Anna? Dont remember) and dubbed into Tamil. I think the father of super actor Ravi krishna and Super Director Jyothikrishna made his acting debut there. I somehow have lived through 15+ years thinking Periamma was that dubbed version. The lyrics of the charanam are very good. The way the charanam is built with the momentum picking up is something only Raja can do. The keyboard playing like a piano provides solid support. This is Raja at his 'jazzy' best. It definitely deserves to be seen as one of the best female solos in TFM last year.

I was completely bowled over when I listened to this song a year back. Our man is know for his casual singing with emotional content and good diction for the situation. This particular song symbolises just that...
Most of the lyrics in solos sung by IR contains a mixture of retrospective of his own life. This one too is in the same vein.

Special rythm for a naughty situation
Some real IR stunners (between 1.02 and 1.27)

This song is one of the most DIVINE compositions of IR. And also by KJY. Every single note in this song is so blissful. This song showcases IR's genius in composing soulful music. What a pristine Masterpiece! Yes, IR has composed many good songs after this, but a Masterpiece to this degree has not been composed by him after that. I rarely see people talking about this song. I think this is the only song IR and Arunmozhi sung together.

What a slang....Arun and Swarnalatha..done good rendition.

song starts like soft duet..with in fraction of second..music moves to kuthu..then immediately moves folk / themmangu with chorus..1st interlude change the song into pure duet..

Arun mozhi and Swarna take over from charanam to song end.

Flute is flying all over the song then and there...

Last two picks are super picks DR. I have already written about 'azhagana nam paandi naatile' song. This is one of those 'only Raja fossible' songs!!! It looks like he has taken an American country format and created a Tamil folk song!!! Superb amalgamation of different strands of musical styles.

Hearing 'ooruku thekile' for the first time. Have not heard any songs of 'Kummi Paatu' earlier. Raja's mastery over folk is very evident here. What a rhythm and what a tune. I personally feel the whole effect would have been enhanced had someone with more folk touch than Arunmozhi had sung this. (Though he has sung it well just that it is not folksy enough.) Swarnalatha brings in that folk touch very well.

DR,

Exactly what happened to me!! I was listening to the Raja song from this film which Venkiram had posted about and then started hearing this song ('mazhai megam'). I think it was raagas who has posted about this song earlier. A lovely ghazalish melody. Raja knows how to handle a genre and leave behind his stamp. So you cannot call this a ghazal in the strict sense. Maybe 'Razhal'? :) Asha does a fabulous job and I sometimes think if she had the pronunciation, she could have easily replaced S Janaki in Raja songs and we would not have noticed!!! I mean, she seems to understand Raja's mind well and deliver superbly, something which Janaki does consistent in Raja songs. No wonder Raja once mentioned that he had great respect for Asha and that he tried coming up with challenging tunes and that Asha would rise to the occasion.

Visu,

The resemblance is due to the fact that both the songs use the same raga, 'Hamir Kalyani'. Otherwise the two songs are structured differently. Vasant Desai sticks very close to the classical Hamir Kalyani. I found the shades of Kalyani much higher in Raja's composition.

Great songs. Written about them before. Rajkumar was a huge surprise package, I remember, for me when I heard it. Anuraga packs yearning in a capsule while jeeva hoovagidhE is a celebration of deep love.
