The Usha Uthup comment on the "movement" feel that the Alliyilam song gives being very typical of IR is true.

Thinking about it - Wonder why IR is playing to this strength of his in a very limited way nowadays. Even among all the recent good songs, I could feel this kind of a "movement" in a limited way in 2 songs - Enge nee sendralum (Kannukkulle) & Oda thandil (Pazhassi raja).

Saagar
10th January 2010, 12:31 PM
In fact this "movement" strength / style of IR has been very effectively picked up by Vidya Saagar & he has been using them well - even the recent superhit in Mal- Neela thaamara's song - "Anuraaga vilochananayi" is a typical one in this style - an IR strength earlier - although in the mould of VS's earlier Mal songs - Karimizhi/aasai aasai/ Kannadi Koodum thedi.

Incidentally I've always felt "Kannadi koodum thedi" to be a restructured "Andhiyile Vaanam" of Chinnavar that was another "movement" song.

Sureshs65
10th January 2010, 03:40 PM
Saagar,

Usha Uthup always comments about the 'movement' in Raja's songs. Another song wherein she had the same comment was 'Ponnavani Paadam Thedi' from Rasathanthram. She exclaimed, "what movement in this song". I think you can hear this 'movement' in 'Allipoove' song as well. I feel even 'flying on the moon' and 'chan chanare' have the sort of movement Usha Uthup is referring to.

I haven't heard the Chinnavar song. I like 'kannadi koodum'. What you say about VS is quite right. He does get the movement right in many of his Malayalam songs.

Thanks Usha for posting this song. I had missed it when it first released...surprisingly, not many people have heard this either. It seemed to have flown under the radar.

However, I was amazed at the creativity displayed in this song...it's very unique even by IR's standards. If we didn't know IR better, we might even say it borders on gimmickry. What IR displays here is his absolute control over choral parts and replacement of traditional instruments. Every element is so well thought out...which has always been IR's hallmark.

Thanks again, Usha.

Saagar,

Thanks for the Chinnavar link. Now I can see why you say 'kannadi' song of Vidyasagar is derived from this. The basic tune seems to be based on Mohanam in both cases and the orchestration for the pallavi is very similar.

If you haven't listed this song earlier, you must certainly do so. It's "Vaan Meedhiley" from Raagangal Maaruvathillai. This film released in 1983 and starred Prabhu. I have always loved this song since my childhood. It's got superb percussion, flute, great stanza negotiations, awesome funk etc but what really stands out is the guitar work...it's a lesson by the maestro!! Check it out...

Shank,

Thanks for pointing to this song. One more of the glorious songs that I have missed. Excellent singing by Janaki as usual. The bass is up with his best work and the drummer must have enjoyed himself. I wonder whether such drummers can now drum on the synth pad :( Superb acoustic drumming in the song. Everything you say is right and as it happens with a Raja song, after you have said everything, there is still something more to say. Thanks once again for this gem.

Usha,

By sheer coincidence the gem you have posted rivals the one posted by Shank. Lovely drumming here as well and superb bass work. Love the way sax comes in once in a while. Janaki in top form. I am more than sure that the whole team must have enjoyed themselves during the making of this song. There seems to something for everyone. Can't think of such collaboration in the current times where everyone works in isolation.

Happy to hear two such high quality songs at one go. Keep it up.

Thanks Suresh...I'm a great fan of Raja and I'm happy if I can help you and others discover more of his magic. These songs provide so much unadulterated joy that it's worth sharing.

Here's another one...you might have heard it before. It's "Roja Ondru" from the film "Oh Maane Maane". It starred Mohan and Urvasi, I believe.

The prelude of this track is magical...it is so tight and superbly orchestrated. I love the singing of SPB and SJ in this number. While SPB is all konjal, Janaki also lends to the playfulness and at times sounds like Jency. IR has composed a completely seperate bassline for the song and it accompanies the melody wonderfully. Also, check the end of the second interlude...the guitar work transition into the stanza. I consider such moments as though Raja is personally putting his signature on them (like a signature moment)...displaying his genius.

app_eng,

I have somehow been able to keep the music and movies separate :) Not being an ardent movie watcher has helped me avoid some of these awful picturizations. I remember only one movie where I said, 'Atleast the music is by Raja' was a Telugu movie starring Balakrishna, Nagma and Meena. (I think it was called Darmakshetram.) My friend dragged me along as he was a die hard fan of Meena. It was pure torture watching the movie, the only relief being offered by the songs!!

Thanks Usha for Kadellaam Pichi Poovu song and for your lovely writeup.

One wouldn't expect such a western rock song like prelude for an authentic village song. Only when the violin and flute starts the village theme sets in.

ATHA MAGAN
YEAIKUM THANNI'
ATHANAIYUM SAKKARA THAN
SAKKARA THAN

This is my favorite part in the song, rendered with a folksy accent by an unknown singer, couldn't get any more authentic than this.

This movie has the other evergreen Yeriyile Elanthamaram (which has a subtle bass guitar prelude). I wanted to watch this movie but never got a chance too and heard it's a decent thriller. Not sure why it was not a hit those days.

I remember reading Sujatha's interview posted in TFM where he was mentioning the tunes were ordinary. Don't understand why :x , the movie featured two gems.

app_eng,

Being a guy closely associated with Mallu land, it is indeed a jailable offense if you have not yet heard 'oru yatra mozhi'. It is a gem of an album and stands equal to his best Malayalam albums. An amazing melody based album which also showcases some of the best work Raja has done on the synthesizer. This is one album which gives a different take on how synthesizer can be used in a way to touch your heart.

It has 5 songs in all, one of them 'kaakala kannamma' seems to be a fun. All others drip with melody.

'thaimavin thanalil' and 'ponveyilile' cannot be described. Fantastic melodies with Chitra and Sreekumar doing a great job. (Vinatha, if I am not wrong, 'ponveyilile' is also a duet.) 'Manjulum Raatri' is a very touching song and this is the song which makes you wonder if synthesizer can be used in such a nice way. Jayachandran does a fabulous job. 'eri kanal katril' has two versions, one by MSV, which he sings in his typical style and one by Raja. Again a very nice song. So you homework is, listen to these songs once :) Multiple listens is something which will automatically happen :D

Shank,

Very true. Whenever I talk about Raja's great works in Malayalam in the 90s, I include this film along with 'Kalapani' and 'Guru'. The quality of songs in this movie equals that of the other two and as you know that is very high praise indeed.

I remember my wife's relatives who had visited us, an elderly couple. They were so fascinated with the songs that they wanted to buy the tape. I passed on my tape to them and got another one. (Luckily it was available in Bangalore during those times.)

Ishtakari has a nice charanam. For a very brief while in the charanam Raja brings in Kalyani ragam. The song is in a different ragam though. The appearance of Kalyani lifts the song and makes it very interesting.

'Sooriyan' also had that amazing Sriranjani based song, 'Vasantha Nila'. Madhu B sounds good in this though Yesudas may have taken it to even greater heights. But no complaints. An outstanding song.

Just posted about Raja's Malayalam numbers in the other thread. I think I should stop posting about Raja's Malayalam numbers for some time :D I get over enthusiastic. As I had said earlier, if I have to give up all other film music, I will do it for Raja's Malayalam works. Amazing melodies. The song you posted is a lovely number.

'Maragada Veenai' as such is an excellent album, the title song also being very good. I think RS introduced this once and then uploaded the songs in his site. Later I was able to get the CD (Oriental Release). This album also has a Tyagaraja composition 'Sudha Madhurya Bhashini' which is sung by Raja's Guru Dakshinamurthy Swamy and by Janaki.

Janaki's other number from this movie, 'enai nee azhaikadhe' is a lovely number as well.

Maragadha Veenai indeed is a nice album. Suresh, yeah, I forgot to add the Swami Dhakshinamoorthy snippet.

enai nee paadadhE thalaivA naan un pAttalla, this one, maragadha veenai isaikkum raagam all are neat songs.

The movie has Goundamani playing Manorama's husband, btw, and that is the primary aspect I remember it by - he treats her much the same way he would anyone else - no deference to the senior aachi etc. Kicks, and slaps abound, although I think he just stops short of administering the full treatment.

Raagadevan,

I do not think that IR produced the movie for ramarajan. AS per my memory, Rajkiran, Sangli Murugan are produced lot of movies for ramarajan and they are spl for IR so they got spl tunes made for them.

IR Produced for Rajini, Kamal and fazil.

DR,

Thanks for introducing me to this wonderful song. And Plum's description of a lazy Saturday afternoon fits to a T because I am listening to it on a lazy Saturday afternoon :D Given the peace this song gives, I may take that nap. And added to it, as Jai says, this is an intoxicating song.

The song starts almost like the tune in the charanam of 'manjolai kili dhano', "neerodai polave sirithadi odinal" and then charts a totally different course.

While I am unable to pin the ragam as such, I think the song has a whole has more traces of Darbari Kananda or its variant.

AFAIK, he was singing much before TR came into movies. The most popular one that I remember is the 'lA lA lalalla lalalla' humming in the fantastic MSV song 'malai rANi mundhAnai sariya sariya' in the film orE vAnam orE bhoomi (Vani Jayaram sang the song with JA only humming).

Even for TR (with AA Raj), JA sang the freaky 'reenA-meenA...ada manmadhan ratchikkaNum' in oru thalai rAgam.

I'm not sure what was his first song for IR but there should be some prior to this.

From what I heard from a relative, JA has stopped singing for movies and touring around the world doing church concerts. (He did one in Columbus, OH recently, according to this source)

chorus section starts the pallavi along with IR (or IR along with chorus) then the song will be nicely shifted to melody in saranam (I believe sujatha) then SPB join into this sangamam and make this song as beautiful duet...finally Arunmozhi joins when finishing 1st saranam...

'ponnil vanam' is an outstanding song. An excellent composition by the maestro. Infact one of the songs which shows why he is a master!! The orchestration, the tune, everything is top notch. Ramarajan was a lucky fellow.

Nice soft melody and good interludes which keeps the song live. IR used very limited musics which adds more beauty to this song.

Listen complete song as when we listen only pallavi seems to be normal song.

Arun mozhi had sung lot of unnoticed good songs like this.

'therke veesum' from 'Kolangal' is an outstanding song. Never heard this before. I am fully taken in by the pallavi. What a construction. I had only heard 'oru kootil' from this movie earlier. This song is a revelation to me. Thanks for pointing to this song.

Aaah. Finally I think I got it. The opening of 'therke vessum' resembles the Madan Mohan's , 'hum pyar mein jalne valom ko' from 'Jailor'. (Singer: Lata). What I mean is that the ragam used is very similar in both of the songs, though the emotions are completely different. The 'Jailor' classic is a melancholic song while this one is a nice romantic song.

Agree with app. 'munnam seidha' is terrific stuff. What an incessant beat!!! Lovely singing as usual by Balu and Janaki. The second interlude is superb with the flautist enjoying himself. I was especially waiting for the beat to pick up in the second interlude. The minor tension due to instruments played without any rhythmic support is wonderfully defused when the drums join.

app,

Thanks for the 'unnai ethirparthen' reco. Again an outstanding song which has totally been ignored. I have never heard this earlier. Based on Mohanam, the master is upto his tricks in the charanam where there is a scale change. Would be an apt song for people like Violin Vicky to analyze. So delightfully melodious this song.

I think more than the title, it would have been the picturisation which would have put off many people. What Raja direly needs is a high class director who can picturise songs well and can also sell the movie to one of the grandsons of the Kalaignar family or to the Maran family. That will get the songs some attention.

Song: Kaatrum Poovum
Film: Kvithai paadum alaigal
Singer: KSC
Year:1990

beautifully rendered by KSC and good lyrics(know idea who pened this song) which makes the song to stay in our mind for long time...

This is another movie in which most of the songs are good but some new faces, directors spoiled all the good songs of this movie.

Additional Picks: Kanney En kanmaniey, unnai kaanamal, saamiey vendikittu and vaan nila...

Song: Hey Intha Poongatru Thalatta
Film:Uthiri Pookkal
Singer: IR
Year:1979

Note: I had ripped the song from DVD. anybody need it pls PM. this song was not available in the CD released by INRECO.

DR - Lovely pick from Uthiri Pookkal. A truly beautiful song in all aspects, especially the simplicity of the tune and the rendition.

Just one listen is enough to bring back all those soul stirring scenes from this movie to the forefront. You should watch the picturization. My heart is heavy already with thoughts about this movie.

I love the ending of the song, the humming of the female voice, so perfect. It evokes an indescribable feel of solitude or kind of a precursor to the more powerful scenes in the movie.

Song: Sokkanukku Vacha
Film:Kaaval Geetham
Singers: SPB and SJ
Year: 1990/1989 (not 1992 )

Yet another beautiful melody from SJ and SPB, Song starts with swaram with mirudhangam and songs starts slowly then go to till end with same thallam (thanks to tabela)..then there flute and violin adds to this lovely song..

Hmm....another unnoticed movie...I belive vikram and saikumar were acted in this movie.

During this period lot of songs were unnoticed because of the number of movies done by IR (around 50 movies per year.)
