[tscii:06003423eb]I'm Excited!

Message from the Captain Gilly

As the new season is almost upon us, it is with great excitement and anticipation that I write a short message to you all.
There has been some change at the franchise since the completion of the inaugural IPL season, with the most obvious being the exciting new colours and re-vamped Chargers logo.

This change alone signifies a new beginning for the franchise after a difficult time last year and everyone involved is fired up to do their best in the new season.

One thing we don’t want to change from the first season is the amazing support we received from our wonderful collection of fans and supporters.

I believe the true meaning of the term ‘supporter’ is to continue to maintain faith in a team through highs and lows, and given the manner with which our fans stayed with us last year, we all look forward to sharing in better times in the future and truly appreciate the way in which you all have stuck with us.
Part of our focus and planning for this season will be to combine together as a group and not individuals, as we perhaps were guilty of last season.

The squad has had a few additions which our new coach, Darren Lehmann has outlined in his message on this site and I’ve utmost faith in his ability to gel the group together and have us all moving in the one direction.

Finally, to have been asked to captain the Deccan Chargers for this coming season, is a tremendous thrill and honour. I look forward to working closely with Vice-Captain Rohit Sharma and all the playing staff and support staff. There is also great experience in our squad that I will look to incorporate as we build a unit that will represent the city of Hyderabad and the State of Andhra Pradesh with pride and passion.

Thanks again to our loyal supporters, I look forward to catching up very soon and so too thanks to all our sponsors for their continued support of our team.

Best wishes
Gilly
Adam Gilchrist[/tscii:06003423eb]

[tscii:7ac6f54e44]Go Chargers!

Welcome to the fans and sponsors of Deccan Chargers to the second IPL season.

Before I start, I take this opportunity to thank the new Chairman and his Board, as well as the owners and staff of Deccan Chargers for their support this year and congratulate them on their forward thinking and drive to make this team the best as can be.

As coach of the Deccan Chargers, I promise a side that will be fitter, stronger, smarter and more skilled this year. We will be working hard as a playing group and coaching staff to make you all proud of our performances. Our style of play will be entertaining, with explosive batting, but also a new found drive to excellence in fielding. Our bowling with the recruits we have, will have more strike power and also give the new captain Adam Gilchrist plenty of variation to work with in this year’s IPL.

I must take this opportunity to welcome to the Deccan Chargers our new players this year. Fidel Edwards and Dwayne Smith from the West Indies bring flair and pace to our team and I am looking forward to their contribution this year and the next. Ryan Harris from Australia, a fast bowler who can field like a panther or should I say rampaging bull, and hit the ball as well. Watch out for him.

To a few local players that have come on board - T. Suman, A. Kumar, M. Bisla, J. Singh and H. Singh - I'm sure by the end of the season you as fans will know them well. They each bring there own skill set to us to improve the overall balance of our team.

I also would like to congratulate Adam Gilchrist on his appointment as captain for this year and with his knowledge of the game and the explosive way he plays, I'm sure all players are looking forward to working with him. Add to this the likes of our stars in the Indian team - Rohit Sharma, R.P. Singh, V.V.S. Laxman and P. Ojha and our overseas players - Herschelle Gibbs who needs no introduction, Scott Styris New Zealand, Andrew Symonds from Australia, C. Silva, C. Vaas and N. Zoysa all from Sri Lanka - I'm sure they will excite you throughout the tournament. These player and the rest of the Deccan Chargers playing group will be playing for all of you and we are looking forward to your support this year.

The players will be on hand to give autographs and have photo sessions where ever possible. They are all very fine young men, so please don't hesitate to come up and say hello. Let them know that you are a Deccan Chargers fan /Sponsor and I'm sure you will get a good response.

We also have some new coaches on board and they are experienced and passionate about the team. Mike Young comes to us with a wealth of experience from Australia and he will be in charge of the fielding and team dynamics. You will love him and he will add value to our side and I guarantee you that our fielding will be one of the best in the IPL. Steve Smith is our fitness trainer and the boys will be working hard together to ensure we leave no stone unturned in our goal of becoming the fittest as well. Add to this our Physio from last year Sean Slattery and his new staff member Ashleigh Joyce to ensure that our players have the benefits of the latest and best medical practices.

This year we have a camp for players to fine tune everything we are about and team plans running from the 31st of March until the first game of the season. Look for an exciting brand coming your way this year - new colours, new team members mixed in with the guys we have from last year and we are on the charge.

Please enjoy the year and come with all of us on the charge. We are up and running and excited about this year as I'm sure you all are.

Sit back, enjoy the games and remember - The Bull is on the Charge.

Here's to an exciting and great IPL Season 2.

All the best

Darren Lehmann.

THEN & NOW
HOW THE TEAMS HAVE CHANGED BE IT IN TERMS OF ACQUIRING NEW PLAYERS OR COACHES. TOI FINDS OUT
On the face of it, Team Hyderabad wear a new look but whether new personnel will change the complexion remains to be seen. Going into the tournament in the inaugural edition as one of the most fancied teams, they finished first from last last season and not surprisingly, heads rolled.
Before acquiring new players, the management got rid of coach Robin Singh, Vijay Mohan Raj (logistics manager) and Shishir Hattangadi (head of cricket). Darren Lehmann was named the coach and Tim Wright the CEO, a
move that was not to be as the latter quit soon. That was after giving Adam Gilchrist full-time charge of leading the team and naming Rohit Sharma as his deputy. The war of words between VVS Laxman and Shahid Afridi did not help the team’s cause either.
The Pakistani maverick will be missing this season. Nuwan Zoysa is not available for the first three matches at least. Andrew Symonds will not be available till the latter stage of the tournament as he will be on national duty in the UAE.
IN: Darren Lehmann (coach), Ryan Harris (Aus), Fidel Edwards, Dwayne Smith (both WI), HS Bansal, Jaskarandeep Singh, Abhinav Kumar, T Suman, Manvinder Singh Bisla, SM Shoaib
OUT Shahid Afridi, Sanjay Bangar, Robin Singh (coach), Vijay Mohan Raj (logistics manager), Shishir Hattangadi (head of cricket), Tim Wright (CEO)

[tscii:30e62b7702] Mood upbeat in Deccan Chargers camp

http://www.hindu.com/2009/04/16/stories/2009041661661800.htm

HYDERABAD: A new captain (Adam Gilchrist), a new coach (Darren Lehmann), a new logo and even a new kit! But the big question is will there also be a new script for Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League’s second edition? Will the team’s big guns boom in South Africa?

The players believe that it is time to forget past performances in the IPL (two wins from 14 games) and look ahead with a positive frame of mind.
Change of guard

There is not even a murmur about the change of guard at the top — from V.V.S. Laxman to Adam Gilchrist.

Rohit Sharma, vice-captain of Deccan Chargers, who along with assistant coach Kanwaljit Singh, monitored the five-day training session in Hyderabad says that last year, the team did not play as badly as the results might indicate.

“There were many close encounters and it was the bowling which was a slight handicap.

Now, the presence of West Indian Fidel Edwards should add sting to the pace attack which also has Chaminda Vaas, R.P. Singh, D. Kalyankrishna, P. Vijaykumar and S.M. Shoaib.

“And left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, after having played for India, should be more difficult to handle,” he said.
No home advantage

“Playing in South Africa will be the same for every team since there will be no home advantage. And, having played there in the World Twenty20 Championship, I know what people expect from me.

“And, as a team too, we are all geared up for the challenge,” Rohit added.

Assistant coach Kanwaljit Singh also feels that there is no point in looking back.

“This team was and is capable of stunning the best. Remember that we beat two of the best teams last year — Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

“Somehow we failed to click in crunch games later on. This time we are confident of making amends,” he said.

Rohit doesn’t feel that the change in captaincy will be an issue.

“When we enter the field, the only objective is to win the match. We have to play to our potential and then everything will fall in place,” he said.
Big bonus

He hopes that Herschelle Gibbs (167 runs at 18.55 last time) should relish playing in front of his home crowd and this should be a big bonus for the team.

And if Adam Gilchrist strikes form, he will be unstoppable. Despite the fact that Shahid Afridi will be absent and Andrew Symonds will join the team only in the last two weeks because of his national commitments, the mood in the Deccan Chargers camp is upbeat.
Confident

“We are confident of writing a new chapter in this edition,” said Rohit.

KNIGHTMARE IN CAPE TOWN
Team Hyderabad Rout KKR By 8 Wickets
Dwaipayan Datta | TNN

Cape Town: It’s total darkness in the Kolkata Knight Riders ranks. And Team Hyderabad made full use of it, cruising to an easy 8-wicket win on Sunday. From the moment the Knights stepped on to the Newlands on a cold evening, there was nothing in their approach that showed that they are playing a game on the back of a two-week camp in South Africa.
True, Team Hyderabad bowlers maintained a tight line, but that doesn’t explain Knight Riders’ capitualtion for a paltry 101. It was not a target that could have tested Hyderabad, and they notched up the required runs in 13.1 overs. Team Hyderabad’s Herschelle Gibbs (43 not out, 26 balls, 5x4, 1x6) and Rohit Sharma (36 n.o. 32 balls, 3x4, 2x6) added 69 runs for the third wicket partnership.
The KKR rot started from the second over itself, when their newly-appointed skipper Brendon Mc-Cullum nicked one down the legs to be caught behind. The rest of the batting line-up was simply in no mood to buckle down and fight fire with fire on a track that had something for the bowlers.
Sourav Ganguly (1 off 12 balls) is one man who is known to rise to the occasion, but even he was absolutely cluelss against the moving ball. If somebody had hoped for the application that was shown by Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid on Day I from Ganguly, he must have been disappointed. The feet was going nowhere as he kept playing and missing for a while and then nicked one well outside the offstump off Harmeet Singh to offer a simple catch to the ’keeper.
Chris Gayle (10), who had just started to look dangerous, also skied one off RP SIngh as wickets kept tumbling one after the other. The korbo lorbo jitbo re tune playing in the stands after an inside edged boundary off Brad Hodge’s bat sounded absolutely misplaced. Bengal skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla (8) was another disappointment. He jumped out of the crease to hit left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha over the top, only to miss the line and getting stranded virtually mid-pitch.

Even though Gayle and Laxman have scored just 10 runs each, their innings contained a fabulous boundaries (1 six and 1 four each). Those four shots are just enough for my pleasure. It is a treat to watch Chris Gayle, the only man who plays with natural carribbean flair at present and everyone knows about silken touch of Laxman. Gayle's amazing six was an evidence of his natural calypso skill, then Laxman proved that he was not far behind. His breathtaking majestic six with a brilliant pull/hook of Ishant Sharma would have stunned each and every one in the stadium as well as the TV viewers. Even though their stay is brief, I enjoyed those four shots.

Edwards bowled a very good spell. Gibbs, the natural hitter of the cricket ball, played some fabulous shots as usual. Rohit sharma played a solid innings after a circumspect start. 8-)

This time they are collectively playing very well as a unit. As of now, I think this team is a little bit tough one to beat. When they stepped into the field, they are entering like tigers on the prowl. Their body language seems to be good on the field. So far, their batting unit Gilly, Gibbs, and Rohit Sharma played really well. Even though DC don't have great bowlers, but their attack is relatively good. RP Singh and Ojha are absolutely wonderful and Edwards too bowled sensibly. But are they peaking early??

Deccan Chargers v Rajasthan Royals, IPL, Kimberley

Deccan, Rajasthan look to regain momentum

May 11, 2009
Start time 16.30 (14.30 GMT, 20.15 IST)

Big Picture
The race for a spot in the semi-finals heats up with only one team effectively out of contention. Defeats for Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royals in their previous games did not push them below the top four, nor - unless Deccan lose by a mammoth margin - should a loss for either team today. But one of them will be left vulnerable at fourth place, and are likely to lose the spot tomorrow if the contest between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians (currently placed fifth and sixth respectively) yields an outright result. A win for Deccan will take them to No. 3, pushing down Rajasthan, who'll be hoping to preserve their current standing, especially as they will have played at least a game more than the rest.
Deccan were the dominant team in the competition's early stages, but since their run of four consecutive wins they've experienced a serious slide with four defeats in their last five games. They emerged second-best in a thrilling encounter against Punjab in their previous match, letting it slip in the final stages after holding the cards for a good part of the game. Rajasthan were beaten convincingly by Chennai Super Kings, a blow to the three-match winning streak that ended a disappointing start to the tournament. Regaining the lost momentum remains the objective for both teams, who've experienced highly differing win-loss trajectories, as the league stage enters its last leg.

Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)
Deccan - LWLLL
Deccan were again let down by Herschelle Gibbs, taking his tally to just 22 runs in his last five innings. Adam Glichrist's performances too have failed expectations, squandering promising starts and not being at his fluent best. His scores read 8, 39, 0, 25, 20 in his last five appearances.
Rajasthan - LWWWL
Rajasthan failed to build on solid starts in their last game. Three of their top four notched up scores of above 25, but each fell while trying to accelerate. Their middle order, which had helped them recover during problems at the top in the earlier stages, struggled against Chennai with Yusuf Pathan, Lee Carseldine and Abhishek Raut making just 23 runs between them.

Watch out for
Andrew Symonds: A brutal 36-ball 60 marked an excellent debut for Symonds in the IPL's second season, but his services as a part-time spinner lasted just one over where he smacked for 20. He revived his team from a weak position at 73 for 4, and his assuring presence in the middle order is a huge asset, especially given the inconsistency at the top.

Teams
Deccan have a problem with their foreign recruits. Medium pacer Ryan Harris has gone wicketless in his three games, and conceded 8.45 runs an over. With Fidel Edwards gone, Deccan might be tempted to give Chaminda Vaas his first game of the competition. Their patience with Gibbs is being tested with five consecutive failures, and the likelihood of Scott Styris or Dwayne Smith receiving a call remains strong.
Deccan (probable): 1 Adam Gilchrist (capt/wk), 2 T Suman, 3 Rohit Sharma, 4 Andrew Symonds, 5 Y Venugopal Rao, 6 Scott Styris/Dwayne Smith, 7 D Ravi Teja, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Shoaib Ahmed, 10 RP Singh, 11 Chaminda Vaas.
Amit Singh has been reported for a suspect action for the second time this season, but with the law allowing him to continue playing until proven of an illegal action, Rajasthan may just persist with him. If not, Munaf Patel is a possible replacement. Shane Harwood was taken for 25 in two overs against Chennai, and with local boy Tyron Henderson having played just one game, Rajasthan do have the option of giving him a go.
Rajasthan (probable): 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Naman Ojha (wk), 3 Swapnil Asnodkar, 4 Ravindra Jadeja, 5 Yusuf Pathan, 6 Lee Carseldine, 7 Tyron Henderson/ Shane Harwood, 8 Abhishek Raut, 9 Shane Warne (capt), 10 Siddharth Trivedi, 11 Amit Singh/Munaf Patel.

Stats and trivia
 None of the Rajasthan batsmen feature in the top ten run-getters in this tournament. Yusuf Pathan, their highest run-scorer with 210 in nine games, is at No.15, but has the second-best strike rate among them of 147.88.
 Herschelle Gibbs has made 204 runs this IPL, but only 22 in his last five, including three ducks.
 The 95-run stand between Andrew Symonds and Venugopal Rao against Punjab is the highest for the fifth wicket this IPL.

Head-to-head
Rajasthan enjoy a 3-0 advantage. Important contributions from Carseldine, Shane Warne, Abhishek Raut and Yusuf helped Rajasthan scale down a target of 142 against Deccan in Port Elizabeth. Last year, Smith and Yusuf helped Rajasthan overcome a brutal century from Symonds to chase 214 off the penultimate ball in Hyderabad. The second game in Jaipur was a mauling, as the same duo scripted an eight-wicket win.
