Pick #582

Song: ithO ithO ithO
Film: Mannikka Vendugiren
Music: Chakravarthi
Singers: S.P.Shailaja, Mano
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
Year: 1990

Mannikka Vendugiren starred Dr.Rajasekar and Deepika Chikalia. Dubbed from Telugu, of course. Rajasekar is a physician who loves his wife Deepika very much. But due to circumstances he believes that his wife is cheating on him with a childhood friend of hers (let us call him Babu). Rajasekar spies on his wife, sees Babu and a woman together in bed in his house, mistakes the woman (Shantipriya, Babu's girlfriend) for Deepika and assumes that his wife is sleeping with Babu. He schemes a great plan. He fakes his own death and frames Babu as the murderer. Babu gets the death penalty while Rajasekar goes into hiding. Shantipriya seeks Sarathbabu's help to investigate the murder to prove her boyfriend's innocence. Sarathbabu, a detective or something, cracks the puzzle and finds Rajasekar. Sarathbabu tells Rajasekar that whom he saw with Babu was Shantipriya and not Deepika. Rajasekar realizes his mistake and runs to save Babu's life. (phew! got that all out in one breath).

You must have figured the reason for the title of the film. Now... the faithful wife, the husband who doubts her character, faithful Sita, suspecting Rama, Ramayan, Deepika Chikalia... you see the connection? Today's pick was filmed on the leads during their happy days before the infidelity suspicion arises.

Film: Subamuhurtham

Pick #584

Song: athO vAnilE OrAyiram
Film: Mudhal Paadal
Music: S.A.Rajkumar
Singer: S.P.Balasubramanyam
Lyrics: S.A.Rajkumar
Year: 1993

"Mudhal Paadal" was a great effort from S.A.Rajkumar. It has eight full length songs and two bit songs. S.A.Rajkumar also wrote the lyrics for all the songs except one song which is in English. All songs have great orchestration and the film also has good re-recording. Mainly the songs are of different tunes. SAR's hardwork does show in the result. But, the tunes of some of the songs are not quite catchy enough to make the album an instant hit. In addition, some of the voices were a bit of a letdown. The album would have been a big hit had it come a few years earlier, before "ARR" happened.

The film was also produced by SAR, and it left him bankrupt. The story was about a guy falling in love with a young catholic nun. He is very persistent about getting her love. The nun's willpower is shaken. After a lot of struggle with her feelings and her vow, the nun decides to give up her religious service and marry the guy. The nun's father and brother are against it and they turn the whole town against the couple. But the younger generation of the town revolts against their parents' generation and supports the couple. Some more things happen and the film ends on a happy note with the couple being united in marriage. It was not a boring film, but the story was unnecessarily forward and the leads looked a little mature.

Today's pick is a nice song from the film. It is sung by the guy soon after he falls in love with the girl.

SAR gave quite a few decent songs during his early days (incl. Mutha Paadal, chinna poove mela pesu). It must be his sivaranjani obsession that turned him into a recycling king during the later days.

Neel,

thanks for the cool melody 'naan iravil ezhuthum' - one of my non-IR 80's favorites. Surprised there were no comments on this song. Perhaps people are still immersed in the musical rain and haven't gotten back yet? :)

Song: senthUra neRRippottin naLinam
Film: Chitra Pournami
Music: M.S.Viswanathan
Singers: T.M.Sounderarajan, P.Susheela
Lyrics: Kannadasan
Year: 1976

A beautiful song in the winning combination of MSV, TMS, PS and Kannadasan. PS and TMS sound so sweet. For some reason this song and other songs from "Chitra Pornami" have not become that popular. The quality of the album is as good as other similar albums from the time. May be the outrageous costumes and story of the film turned off the audience even from the music. The film starred a somewhat slim Sivaji Ganesan and pretty Jayalalitha.

Very nice song Neel. I heard Chitra Pournami (super flop) was in production for very long time and got released in 1975 or 76. This may be the reason that both Sivaji and JJ look slim and young :-)

PS sounds very sweet and TMS never was a mismatch for Sivaji.

I guess it was directed by CV Rajendran. Vijayakumari also acted in a key role pairing Muthuraman (Villain). In fact Sivaji acted in a terrorist or naxal kind of role.

Song: vanthAlum vanthANdi rAjA
Film: Chitra Pournami
Music: M.S.Viswanathan
Singer: T.M.Sounderarajan, P.Susheela
Lyrics: Kannadasan
Year: 1976

Today's pick was moderately popular during its time. Jayalalitha tells Sivaji that they are going to have a baby. Sivaji is overjoyed and bursts into this song. TMS gives a very happy and hyper rendition and PS contrasts with a calm rendition. Nicely conceived and blended by the master composer MSV.

Other songs from the film are:
ennadi chinna kutti - TMS (usual teasing song)
kAlam uNdu paruvam uNdu - LRE (nightclub song with nice orchestration and chorus)
nIyum vAzavENdum - VJ (great sad song)

Song: aLLi vechcha malligaiyE
Film: Inimai Itho Itho
Music: Ilaiyaraja
Singer: P.Susheela, Krishnachandar
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1983

Inimai Itho Itho is a nice comedy film starring Chandrasekar and Nisha(pretty woman, what happened to her?) in the lead. Allow me to tell you the story. :)

Kuppusami(Chandrasekar) is a single man, somewhat wealthy, lives in a village and makes a living by stealing and cheating others for money, and spends half his time drinking. His best pal is a twelve year old boy who is his accomplice in his frauds. Kannamma(Nisha) is a young woman, poor, with no parents or relatives to look after her and lives in a nearby village. She is kicked out of her village over a false accusation. The little boy brings her to Kuppusami to work as a help. Kannamma decides to seduce Kuppusami and marry him so that she can have a safe life. But Kuppusami treats her badly because he is too cheap and she is only a servant.

Another young man comes to the village and he likes Kannamma. She pretends to flirt with him to make Kuppusami jealous. It works. Kuppusami tells Kannamma that he likes her, and asks her to be his... concubine! Upset over his proposal and his drunken attempt to rape her, Kannamma considers accepting the other man's love, because that man wants to actually marry her. In the meantime, the villagers insult Kuppusami for cohabiting with Kannamma. In an impulse, Kuppusami decides to marry Kannamma and makes all the wedding plans within a few hours. But Kannamma agrees to leave the village with the other man. Kuppusami overhears this, gets angry, gets drunk, threatens to kill her, then calms down and blabbers how much he loves her and wants to marry her. He then walks away with his bottle of liquor. Now the other man comes to pick up Kannamma to leave for town. Finally, it is time for Kannamma to make a decision. She has to choose one of the two men. So, whom did Kannamma choose? Sorry, cannot break the suspense. :poke:

With the lovely early 80s sounds of IR and the sweet voices of PS and KC, today's pick was quite popular when it released and still remains a favorite to many fans. The song was picturized on Nisha and the other man when she accepts his love.

Other songs in the film:

Song: santhana malarin
Film: Garuda Soukkiyama
Music: M.S.Viswanathan
Singers: S.P.Balasubramanyam, B.S.Sasirekha
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1982

When baroque mentioned "pU maNakkum pUngkuzali" few days ago I was reminded of today's pick. For its same kind of setup. MSV's music, SPB the lead singer with BSS doing the humming. Again when bobgalee mentioned "santhana poovai" by SPB, I was reminded of today's pick for its opening words "santhana malarin". So, here we are. :) The song was picturized on Sivaji and Sujata. MSV did at least one other song with SPB as the lead singer and BSS doing the humming. Any guesses?

This song substitutes a nEyar(bobgalee) viruppam.

Music: Ilaiyaraja

A fun song. DC and SPS render the song very normally. They do not overdo anything. IR has kept the tempo of the song moderate. Together it makes the song enjoyable. Don't know much about the film "Padikkatha Pannaiyar" except that it starred Sivaji Ganesan.

Song: pAdum vaNdE
Film: Kalangalil Aval Vasantham
Music: Vijayabhaskar
Singer: Vani Jairam
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1976

"Kalangalil Aval Vasantham" starred Muthuraman and Srividya. I believe that this song is sung by an insane Srividya searching for the lover who abandoned her. VJ does a stunning job bringing out the desparation of the character, the state of being lost, and the beauty of the lyrics. Vijayabhaskar's rich and beautiful orchestration adds eeriness and exoticness to the song. All songs in the film are wonderful. Either VB or VJ certainly deserved an award for this album. Song: mAlai mudhal kAlai
Film: Unnai Thedi Varuven
Music: Ilaiyaraja
Singer: Vani Jairam
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1985

"Unnai Thedi Varuven" was directed by Sridhar. As always, he managed to get great tunes from the composer. Today's pick is one of the best among IR's western compositions but went overlooked. A very delicate composition that is all about control. You can feel the woman burning with lust, yet there is a restraint in the way she expresses it, and you can feel that too. The song is like a woman with her heaving bosoms and the instrumentation is like a delicate silk fabric that envelopes her, barely. The charanams start to intensify as they get close to the finish, gradually increase and finally hit the peak (starting at "suganggaLum suvaigaLum nAnthAn" and peaking at "nALEthu" and again in the next charanam starting to intensify at "aRinthavan purinthavan yArO" and peaking at "vArAnO"). Yet you can feel the careful and controlled execution of the finish, like walking on a tight rope, like she does not want to disturb the calm of the night. Wonderful job by VJ. The vibratos and the kiRakkams at the end of the phrases are a delight.

Song: thottilil thodanggidum
Film: Kanne Kaniyamudhe
Music: M.S.Viswanathan
Singer: Vani Jairam
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1986

Following the western number let us enjoy another dimension of VJ's vocal skills - the semiclassical genre she is well known for. Today's pick, a beautiful philosophical song, however, went overlooked. MSV fully utilizes VJ's classical music skills just as he previously did with "Ezhu svaranggaLukkuL", "sugamAna rAganggaLE", and "kaNNan kOvil paRavai", to name a few. VJ sang two outstanding solos for "Kanne Kaniyamudhe" - the dramatic sad song "oru piLLai azaiththathu", and "thottilil".

The film starred Sujata, Rahman, Amala, Jaisankar and others. If I remember correctly Sujata is a dance teacher, married to Jaisankar and has a little son. For some reason she runs away from home leaving behind her husband and son. Many years pass, Sujata returns and takes up a job as a dance teacher in Rahman's dance school. There she finds out that Rahman is her own son. But she cannot tell him that she is his mother...you can imagine the drama and sentiments that would follow. MSV scored many beautiful songs for the film.

This song concludes a week of VJ songs.

Song: vA iLaiyavanE
Film: Malare Kurinji Malare
Music: M.A.Raveendran
Singers: K.J.Yesudas, K.S.Chithra
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1993

Today's pick is a nice light classical. Overall it is a good album from M.A.Raveendran. He delivers what is expected of him.

"Malare Kurinji Malare" starred a newcomer R.Venkatesh and Seetha in the lead. The story of the film had all the usual, predictable turns and twists. Seetha is a college student and the daughter of a rich man (Senthamarai). Venkatesh is a poor man who works as a manager(more like a personal assistant) to Senthamarai. Seetha initally does not like Venkatesh but then starts liking Venkatesh and slowly falls in love with him. Her change of mind happens because he saves her from a bunch of street thugs, then he saves her from her muRaippayyan who tries to rape her, and rejects Seetha's friend Disco Shanthi's advances towards him.

While this is going on Senthamarai's sister gets in an auto accident. Right before she dies from her injury she asks Senthamarai to give his daughter in marriage to her son. Senthamarai agrees. But when Senthamarai finds out that Seetha is in love with Venkatesh he asks Venkatesh to leave town and gives him a lot of money to disappear. Venkatesh rejects the money and leaves. Seetha finds out what happened, goes after him and brings him back. But Senthamarai is stubborn that he is a man of his words. He goes on to arrange Seetha's marriage to the son of his dead sister.

SPOILER ALERT! Do not read the next paragraph if you do not want to know how the film ends.

Under heavy pressure and sentimental blackmail Seetha finally gives in to her father's wish. She tells him that she will agree to his wish as long as he won't hurt Venkatesh. But Senthamarai has already hired thugs to beat up Venkatesh in an effort to scare him out of town. Seetha's wedding ceremony begins. Venkatesh comes running to the wedding hall, all beaten up and soaked in blood. Seetha gets up from the maNavaRai and runs to Venkatesh. Cries and tells him she has consumed poison, leans on his chest and dies. Venkatesh lectures Seetha's parents on how their stubbornness and stupidity ended the life of their daughter. Then he picks up a knife, slashes his own neck and dies. With the two lying dead on the floor the film ends like all other love tragedies that came before it.

SPOILER ENDS!

M.A.Raveendran composed some more nice songs for the film:
kAthal paingkiLiyE - KSC

Y'all,
Just a clarification... I am posting the story only to give some background and context to the song, and hopefully keep it interesting. It is not a review of the film and is not meant to influence a prospective viewer one way or the other. The story is meant to add another dimension to the song and hopefully enhance the listening experience. This thread is still about songs (and the film within the context of the song). Not about films. Thanks!

Song: mAmAnggam Achchu
Film: Nilaavai Kaiyile Pidichen
Music: Vijay Anand
Singer: K.S.Chithra
Lyrics: One of (Gangai Amaran, Vaali, Vairamuthu)
Year: 1987

It is not very often one comes across an item number sung by KSC. That is what makes this song special. Naayanam and Thavil already written into the story, Vijay Anand makes use of the instruments to give a regular item number a slightly different flavor.

"Nilaavai Kaiyile Pidichen" is a very entertaining comedy directed by Rama.Narayanan starring Chandrasekar, Seetha, Rasi, Vinu Chakravarthi, S.S.Chandran, Deepan, Radharavi and others. Vinu Chakravarhti is paNNaiyAr in a village, the richest man in the suththuppattu pathinettu patti. He is frequently referred to as "villAthi villan vengkala karuppan". It is neither scary nor funny. It is so annoying it actually becomes funny. His wife is so comically vain she wears the price tags on everything - her necklace, ear rings, eye glasses, saree, everything :) . Vinu is just as vain, when he comes to preside the village panjchAyaththu he comes riding an elephant, does the interrogation sitting on it, delivers the verdict still sitting on it and then rides back. He has two children Seetha and Deepan, educated in the city, and they come home for vacation. In the village, Seetha ill-treats the farm workers and Rasi, a poor village girl, confronts her about her arrogance.

Deepan falls in love with the low-caste Rasi and she gets pregnant. Seetha learns about this and tells the couple that she will talk to her father and get his acceptance for their marriage. "panjchAyaththu" is called. Vinu comes on his elephant :) . Seetha, who is actually holding a grudge against Rasi for insulting her in front of the farm workers, changes color in the panjchAyaththu and says that Rasi could have gotten pregnant by anybody and that she is girl of bad character who should be kicked out of the village. Vinu agrees and declares that Rasi will have to leave the village and no one in the village should help her in any way thereafter. Rasi's father is heartbroken and dies. Rasi moves out of the village and stays with the do-gooder Pakkiri(Radharavi). Pakkiri is a disabled man with only one leg. He keeps referring to himself as "pichchuvA pakkiri vechchupputtAn kaththiri", which is neither scary nor funny. It is so annoying it actually becomes funny. Pakkiri goes to Vinu's house and requests that Deepan marry Rasi. Vinu throws him out of the house and puts Deepan under house arrest. Pakkiri challenges that he will make happen a marriage between Deepan and Rasi.

One fine day, a group of musicians, a nAyana gOshti, arrives in the village in a convertible. There are four of them. Chandrasekar who plays the nAyanam, S.S.Chandran who plays the thavil, and two sidekicks with asattu faces, one plays the second nAyanam and the other plays the cymbals. All wearing vEtti, thuNdu, kadukkaN, kungkuma pottu and shoulder-length hair. They buy a small house in the village, convert into a palace and start living there. They brush their teeth with golden brush and bathe in rose water. They dress up like Maharajas and have Disco Shanti over to dance item number while Chandrasekar plays the nAyanam and S.S.Chandran plays the thavil. They tell the villagers about all their royal lineage, international connections, businesses, enormous wealth and that they play music only for fun. Their alattal and bandha are silly but hillllllarious. Vinu and Seetha are attracted to their wealth and decide that Seetha marry Chandrasekar. They talk to Chandrasekar and he agrees. The two are married. (To be continued...)

The album has at least five songs that are good, though not necessarily exciting. But then one cannot expect a "Naan Adimai Illai" from a low-budget comedy flick.

This song wraps up KSC week.

Vijay Anand did "Oorukku Upadesam"(1984). It has a nice song by VJ "tharavA nAn tharavA". He(or is it they?) also did "Naan Admiai Illai"(1986) which was a big hit album. He has done some Visu films too. And "Vetri Mel Vetri"(1989).

Song: thennai iLam kIththum
Film: Nilaavai Kaiyile Pidichen
Music: Vijay Anand
Singer: Malaysia Vasudevan
Lyrics: One of (Gangai Amaran, Vaali, Vairamuthu)
Year: 1987

A nice aNNan song for a thanggai. Malaysia Vasudevan has sung some lovely aNNan songs (oru thangga rathaththil, thanggachchi siriththALE, etc.) Vijay Anand's folkish composition and Malaysia Vasudevan's smooth vocals combine to create another beautiful aNNan song. Vijay Anand does a nice job with the naayanam, thavil, violins and the flute.

Nilaavai Kaiyile Pidichen story continues...

SPOILER ALERT! Please skip the next two paragraphs if you do not want to know how the film ends.

At their wedding night, Chandrasekar tells Seetha that he is not really a royalty, has no international connections and no father living abroad. He is just an average man and that it was all an act to fool her and Vinu. Seetha is devastated and goes to live with her parents. Chandrasekar and his friends invite Vinu and Seetha to the riverside (why riverside? don't know :) ), play their music instruments and taunt them. Then Chandrasekar tells Vinu how he has fooled him. Chandrasekar reveals that he is Rasi's longlost brother who was expelled from the village by the same Vinu over some false accusation when he was a little boy, because he happened to witness a murder committed by Vinu. Realizing that he has been taken for a ride, Vinu decides to separate Seetha and Chandrasekar. But Seetha is in a dilemma that if she separates from her husband then no one will respect her and that she will have to spend the rest of her life alone and miserable. In the meantime, S.S.Chandran breaks into Vinu's house at night and releases Deepan from house arrest. Deepan is a healthy young man who can at the least walk on his own legs but S.S.Chandran and one of the sidekicks carry Deepan out of his house by hand :) , and then S.S.Chandran complains, "why are you so heavy?" :) . They go to a temple where Deepan would marry Rasi. At the wedding Chandrasekar sings today's pick.

Vinu finds out about the wedding and is outraged. He and his men arrive at the temple. His men round everybody up. All of them are tied to the pillars of a run-down house and Vinu is getting ready to shoot everybody including his son Deepan and son-in-law Chandrasekar in order to protect the honor of his lineage. But Pakkiri appears from behind, throws a noose at Vinu's gun and snatches it. Everybody unties themselves and a big fight begins. Seetha hears about it and comes to the old house and joins the fight to help her husband. The two asattu sidekicks and S.S.Chandran perform comic stunts you will hurt yourself laughing. Before anyone gets seriously hurt or dies, the police arrive and arrest Vinu. He immediately realizes that he has been a bad man till then and apologizes for all his wrongdoings. The police take him away. Everybody lives happily ever after. :)

SPOILER ENDS!

Song: ennavO sEthi
Film: Oomai Janangal
Music: Gangai Amaran
Singers: S.Janaki, P.Jayachandran
Lyrics: One of (Thanigaichelvan, Sokkar, Semmalar Selvan)
Year: 1984

"Oomai Janangal" was directed by Jayabharathi who has directed many art films in Tamil. Gangai Amaran scored some really good songs for this film. Today's pick is a really beautiful melody. This song sequence shows the budding and blossoming of romance between Bhagyaraj(a tea factory worker) and Preeta(a tea estate worker). Bhagyaraj likes Preeta. He goes to see Preeta while she is picking tea. They make eye-contact, slowly Preeta walks towards him, they stand close looking at each other, no words spoken, Bhagyaraj removes the tea collecting basket hanging from her head(symbolic of taking the burden away), then they walk through the beautiful locales of the mountain estate. Very poetic.

Oomai Janangal is a two-generation story. Preeta and Bhagyaraj work on a tea estate during British rule. The estate owner, a Brit, is very abusive towards the laborers and he also preys on the women who work there. In the middle of the bonded labor, poverty, abuse and suffering, Preeta falls in love with Bhagyaraj and gets pregnant. But Bhagyaraj is killed by the estate management during a labor protest. Preeta leaves the estate for the city hoping to find a better life. India gains independence around this time and she is taken in by Kasturba Gram. There she delivers her son. The son grows up to be a teen. When something in the gram gets stolen, Preeta suspects that her son must have stolen it, when he actually did not. Angered at his mother's distrust towards him, the son runs away from home and grows up to be Sarathbabu, the general manager of a big tea producing company.

I beleive that this film was originally titled "Theneer"(tea) and later changed to "Oomai Janangal". The film is based on the novel "Theneer" by D.Selvaraj. Prapanchan wrote the dialog for the film.

Sarathbabu's story in two days. :)

Song: vegukAlam inggu
Film: Oomai Janangal
Music: Gangai Amaran
Singers: Malaysia Vasudevan, Poorani and Chorus
Lyrics: One of (Thanigaichelvan, Sokkar, Semmalar Selvan)
Year: 1984

"Oomai Janangal" story continues...

Sarathbabu, the general manager of a big tea producing company is engaged to marry Uma, his secretary. There is a labor uprising in the tea factory headed by the union leaders V.Gopalakrishnan and Chandrasekar. Sarathbabu bribes Gopalakrishnan and also sends a bribe to Chandrasekar through him to suppress the labor uprising. But Chandrasekar refuses the bribe. Sarathbabu has Gopalakrishnan hire some thugs to beat up Chandrasekar. The thugs come back and report that Chandrasekar died from the beating. Gopalakrishnan runs to Sarathbabu's house in the middle of the night and tells him that Chandrasekar is dead. Sarathbabu has no sympathy for the dead man. He starts considering ways to cover up the murder. Gopalakrishnan is shocked at Sarathbabu's coldheartedness and turns against him. Preeta who is visiting Sarathbabu at this time is shocked at her son's corrupt ways. She tells him, in flashback, about the humble origin of their family in the tea estate and his father Bhagyaraj's ultimate sacrifice for labor rights. Today's pick is the background song that opens the flashback.

Sarathbabu does not care about his humble beginnings. In fact, he is ashamed of it. Ashamed that his parents were laborers, ashamed that he was born out of wedlock and ashamed that his grandfather pimped his grandmother to the estate owner. Sarathbabu just wants to get ahead in life at the expense of the poor laborers, become wealthy and secure himself a status in the society.

When Gopalakrishnan returns home he finds Chandrasekar alive. Chandrasekar was only unconscious from the beating but the thugs panicked and reported him dead. Gopalakrishnan tells him what happened. Sarathbabu's bribery attempt and use of violence becomes public knowledge and the upper management becomes concerned about the reputation of the company.

SPOILER ALERT! Skip the next paragraph if you do not want to know how the film ends.

Continuing to fight for their demands, Chandrasekar, Gopalakrishnan and the union members organize a major protest rally against the management. Sarathbabu hires a group of thugs and asks them to cause commotion during the rally which will lead to police action and thus diffuse the protest. But he does not know that the same thugs have been hired by the upper management, for much more money, and have been asked to murder Sarathbabu. The rally begins. As it goes by their house, Preeta and Uma get fired up and join the rally. Sarathbabu is on his way to the rally to see if his thugs are doing what they are supposed to. But his car is stopped on the way by the same thugs and they start beating him. Sarathbabu is fighting for his life. The news gets to Chandrasekar and Gopalakrishnan. They rush to the scene and save Sarathbabu. Sarathbabu is humbled and ashamed. He realizes that the upper management views him the same way he views the people below him (it is all relative, isn't it?). Sarathbabu joins the laborers in their protest. Preeta and Uma look at him proudly.

SPOILER ENDS!

Today's pick has great chorus work. Poorani, whose name everybody knows but rarely hears her sing in TFM, gets to do a little humming in this song. At least the filmmakers were kind enough to credit her for it. Malaysia Vasudevan gives a neat rendition.

Today's pick is a nice duet with a strong 1980s MSV flavor. MSV composed similar folkish classicalish mixturish type songs for a few movies in the early to mid 80s. The male voice's cleaner lyrics are for a prince. The female voice's colloquial songlines are for his love interest who is a street entertainer. Sounds like the lyricist went overboard trying to be streetish here.

Song: nIthi thEvan mayanggukiRAn
Film: Neethi Devan Mayakkam
Music: K.V.Mahadevan
Singer: P.Susheela
Lyrics: Kannadasan
Year: 1982

"Neethi Devan Mayakkam" must have been (re)made in Telugu and Tamil at the same time. Directed by Bapu the film starred Madhavi, Bhanuchandar, Devi, Major Sundarrajan, Sowcar Janaki and others. Kamalahasan does a cameo role. Madhavi gives a good performance. Bhanuchandar gives an okay performance and gets away with his good looks. Saw him recently in the film "Thoovaanam". Still looks handsome. Read somewhere that Madhavi, retired from films, is running a beauty salon in Hyderabad.

The film has four songs. Three of them sound very TeFM-ish. And the lyrics sound TeFM-ish too. Today's pick is the fourth song.
The other songs are:

Yes, it is the remake of Insaaf Ka Tarasu. Kamal plays a military guy in a court scene. Madhavi's boyfriend is not Mohan. His name is Raja or something. Not Kadalora Kavithaigal Raja. Never seen him any other Tamil film.

Song: kanagasabai / vanthALE / chErikkuL
Film: Kann Sivanthal Mann Sivakkum
Music: One or more of (Ilaiyaraja, Guru Dhananjayan, Traditional)
Singers: Ilaiyaraja, S.Rajeswari, A.L.Narayanan, T.V.Gopalakrishnan, Saibaba
Lyrics: Gopalakrishna Bharati, Vairamuthu
Year: 1982

The only full length song from "Kann Sivanthal Mann Sivakkum" that I know of is "manithA manithA ini un". Today's picks are three bit songs and two mirudhangam bits strewn over four scenes of the film. I put them togehter in one file. Do not know if any of these song bits are available in full length. "kanagasabai" is for a short dance recital by Guru Dhananjayan. "vanthALE" is the background song when Vijayamohan and Poornima Jayaram walk and talk together developing their friendship. "chErikkuL" is the background song when the Zamindar uses one of the poor village girls for sex. Not sure about the voices other than Ilaiyaraja and S.Rajeswari. Hence listing few others credited in the film.

The film directed by Sridhar Rajan was the story of a few idealists fighting against the dominance of the powerful in the society. It starred Vijayamohan, Poornima Jayaram, Jaishankar, Rajesh, Calcutta Viswanathan, Jayamala, and others. It was considered a good film in its time. But watching it now makes me think that it is a very tiring story. Poornima Jayaram in her starched cotton sarees, big pottu and the occassional untied long hair representing the urban elite of the 1980s was a breath of fresh air in the film.

RR,
After you mentioned "whistling", I realize Saibaba's part in the song.
"chErikkuL" is not a violent situation. I did not phrase it correctly in my original post. The union is consentual. The young woman has an arragement with the zamindar. And the villagers want her to break off that relationship. That is expressed in the lyrics.

baroque,

Film: Oru Odai Nadhiyagirathu

Raghuvaran was a unique actor. With his casual attitude on screen and his peculiar dialog delivery he captured the hearts of Tamil filmgoers for nearly three decades. "Oru Odai Nadhiyagirathu" starred Raghuvaran, Sumalatha, Manochitra and others. The film received good reviews and had moderate sucess at the box office. The album is full of beautiful songs.

Today's pick is a beautiful song by SAR. Nicely used chorus and Sunandha's clear voice add extra beauty. SPB is good as always.

"Perumpulli" directed by Vikraman starred Babu and Suma(n) Ranganath, Vinu Chakravarthi, Srividya, Rajesh and others. It was Suma's debut film in Tamil. A typical formula film, the story begins like fun, then gets serious, then gets very serious, then gets very very serious and ends. (See, I can tell the whole story in one line if I have to.) :)

Song: pUkkaL sindhunggaL
Film: Nizhal Thedum Nenjangal
Music: Ilaiyaraja
Singers: S.Janaki, S.P.Balasubramanyam
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
Year: 1982

"Nizhal Thedum Nenjangal" was directed by Nivas who was the cinematographer in Bharathiraja's early films. The film has really good songs and good camera work.

Vadivukkarasi is the daughter of Raja "Sir" Chakravarthi. Her father and husband are dead. She lives with her son Rajiv in a huge palace and manages all the family property, factories, etc. She does not show any love or affection towards Rajiv. Rajiv longs for love and finds it in Vijayasanthi, the daughter of Vadivukkarasi's manager. But one day he finds out that Vijayasanthi has another boyfriend too and is devastated. He drives home drunk, runs over a little boy on the street and the boy dies. The little boy's sister is Subadra who is an investigative reporter. She writes about the abuse of laborers in Vadivukkarasi's factory, the accident, etc. in her magazine. Under Vadivukkarasi's pressure the editor of the magazine fires Subadra. Then Vadivukkarasi asks her car driver to take the blame for the accident and go to jail. But she is shocked when Rajiv confesses and goes to jail.

In jail Rajiv comes across a former palace servant who tells him that he is not the real son of Vadivukkarasi. He reveals the long-guarded secrets that Rajiv is actually the son of Vadivukkarasi's brother who married a poor, low-caste girl and that both the brother and his wife were killed by Vadivukkarasi's clever plot. When Raja Sir Chakravarthi dies he leaves all his property for his son's son. Vadivukkarasi has a son of her own. She switches her son and her brother's son, so that her son can inherit all the property while fooling the public that he is her brother's son. Her bilogical son grows up to be Bhanuchandar who is getting his education in the United States, and the general public thinks that he is Vadivukkarasi's brother's son who is going to inherit all the property. When Bhanuchandar returns from USA, the family celebrates with a party. Today's pick is sung by Vijayasanthi at the party. Halfway through the song, Rajiv returns from jail, now knowing all about his mother's secrets. You can hear that in the lyrics SPB sings for Rajiv.

After Bhanuchandar returns from USA, Vadivukkarasi tries to shower him with love and affection and tries very hard to earn his love and trust. Having been raised in boarding schools and in the USA all his life, Bhanuchandar has no emotional attachment to Vadivukkarasi, whom he thinks is his aunt. He finds her doting care annoying. Vadivukkarasi also keeps insisting that Bhanucahnder should start managing all the property as he is the heir of the Raja. Bhanuchandar is disinterested in that material life. He is an artistic kind of person. He asks Vadivukkarasi to stop bothering him with her constant nagging about property, money, factory, etc. In the meantime, Rajiv keeps taunting Vadivukkarasi now that he knows all her secrets. Rajiv also falls in love with Subadra. Vadivukkarasi wants Rajiv to not see Subdra anymore because she is a poor commoner. Rajiv, of course, does not care.

SPOILER ALERT! Skip the next three paragraphs if you do not want to know how the film ends.

Vadivukkarasi has lost Rajiv forever because of her scheming ways. Bhanuchandar just does not have the ability to bond with Vadivukkarasi. She is distraught. One night she is sitting in the dark... scared, helpless and feeling all alone. She sees a woman. It is none other than her brother's wife that she thought she had killed years ago by setting her house on fire. But the woman had actually escaped the fire and had been living in hiding all this time. Looking at her Vadivukkarasi is frigtened that it is a ghost and screams for help. Bhanuchandar comes running to her rescue. Vadivukkarasi breaks down, tells him the entire truth, and asks him to forgive and accept her(Vadivukakrasi) as his mother. Bhanuchandar refuses.

Bhanuchandar cannot forgive the betrayal of his mother nor can he feel any love for her. He turns all the property over to Rajiv and the laborers, and leaves for USA. No one cares for Vadivukkarasi. She realizes her sad plight and her own longing for love. She runs to the airport to bring back Bhanuchandar. He sees her, ignores and leaves.

Everyone is looking for love. But not finding it, in their own family. They are the nizal thEdum nenjanggaL.

SPOILER ENDS!
