I found one particular scene to be extremely affecting (new fathers will be more vulnerable i guess) - the scene before the one where the 'thatha' has the now famous outburst against god. And padatha paathuttu veedu thirumbiyapparamum, the characters linger in your mind. The movie itself is disturbing on the whole. Forget the negatives and imperfections. This is untrodden territory

A couple of days back, Jeyamohan wrote about (http://jeyamohan.in/?p=1504) Madhubala who played the girl (who has many close-ups in the film) the old man Ramappan (poet Vikramadityan) takes care of in the film. One of the passages I found very evocative is the one where he talks about her age.

I also thought some scenes in Veyil were pretty well acted. There was a lump in my throat when Pasupathi's character was beaten up by his dad who had accused him of theft. (turns out Pasupathi's sister had the "stolen" item all along).

The other day I was talking about how real life relationships add weight to a scene/screenplay in the context of the relatively light-weight Sunil Dutt-Sunjay Dutt relation in Munnabhai MBBS.

This scene between Sivaji and Kamal is a much apter, and much more worthy example of the same. The off-screen dynamics make it even more poignant than it already is, per the screenplay - Thevar Magan was possibly Sivaji's last significant movie - what a movie!

Not enough can be said about that entire sequence actually. The violins and single guitar note that underscores the dread and uncertainty of the potentially volatile situation giving way to a keyboard shruthi as Sakthi explains his stance is followed by a moment of silence. That momentary silence lets him transition to the title theme as Sakthi declares 'enakku mAyana mAthiri sUzhchchi theriyAthu'. rAjA understands that as a viewer we are already aware to some extent where this is going and uses the theme as a harbinger. ithellAm solli thanthu varuvathalla. 'Avar uNmayilayE remba artist saar'!
I wonder if, while writing the portions after Sakthi proposes, Kamal thought to himself 'athellAm rAjA pAththuppAr...'. Just difficult to imagine a better representation of that situation.
