[tscii:510d610fff]‘Dindigul Sarathy’, a film with comedian Karunas as the hero, has been sold for a whopping Rs.10 crore for distribution in Tamil Nadu. The distribution rights for the film produced at a modest budget of Rs.1.5 crore, have been bought by Sun Pictures.

The Coimbatore region alone has fetched for Rs.75 lakh, a rate equalling that of many of the frontline heroes. Naturally, Karunas is over the moon!

This is the first time Karunas dons the role of the male lead in a film. The film is a remake of the Malayalam hit, ‘Vadakkunokki Yantram’, written and directed by Sreenivasan.

In Kollywood, comedians romancing the leading ladies is nothing new. But, B.O. results were not always pleasant. Vadivelu films ‘Imsai Arasan…’ was a big hit, but Vivek’s ‘Solli Adippaen’ is yet to see the light of the day. He has already started working on his second film as a lead actor in ‘Maganae Marumaganae’.[/tscii:510d610fff]

[tscii:908930d626]Sun Pictures’ presentation Dindigul Sarathy received tremendous response from the public on its opening day. Public thronged the theatres playing Dindigul Sarathy and came out at the end of the show in a very jaunty mood, discussing about repeating the experience. This should encourage Kollywood filmmakers to make more comedies and to carry on their experimentation with film scripts without any fear of failure – Kollywood audiences are more open to new ideas now.

Dindigul Sarathy, which stars Karunas and Karthika (of Nam Nadu fame), is about a plain-looking and good-hearted man married to a beautiful girl and his pathetic self-doubts. Though his wife loves him for what he is, Sarathy is always obsessed with his pathetic self-doubts, and the resulting antics provide quite a lot of laughter. The film slowly develops into an appealing emotional story in the second half and has a happy ending without becoming sentimental, which makes it more enjoyable. Both Karunas and Karthika have been lauded by the public for their good performances.

In Chennai, theatres playing the film were only crowded, but down south the theatres wore a festive look! In many places, “pal abhishekam” were performed on the cut-outs of Karunas and Karthika! And in Madurai, the exhibitors came to their respective theatres with a group of youngsters performing folk dances around the boxes containing the film reels! Generally, this type of welcome is reserved for big films! Anticipating the great time they would have watching it, the public decided to give the film a grand welcome.

With no obscenity or violence, Dindigul Sarathy is a wholesome family entertainer

Popular comedian Karunaas is happy that his maiden venture as hero (Dindigul Sarathy) has opened well across the State.

Being distributed by Sun Pictures, the movie is inspired by a Malayalam blockbuster which was directed and enacted by Sreenivasan. It is about an average looking man who gets married to a beautiful young woman. What happens in his life after the wedding forms the crux of the story.

'Nam Naadu' Karthika plays the female lead. Says Karunaas, 'several prominent actresses were approached to do the female lead. It would be wrong on my part to name them but then they have failed to understand that the script and story are the real heroes in a film. If it is good, they can be part of a hit film'.

[tscii:b32bd974f5]Dindigul Sarathy - Strikingly different

Joining the long list of comedians trying their luck as hero is Karunaas. Unlike others, his maiden venture as hero is a whiff of fresh air for it is laced with lighter moments, sentiments and a message at the end for the masses.

Doing a remake is never an easy task. Even remakes from other languages starring big artistes failed to strike a chord with the masses. ‘Dindigul Sarathy’, inspired by Malayalam hit ‘Vadaku Nokki Enthiram’ is different and engrossing.

Due credit should be given to director Shivashanmugham, who has made necessary changes in the script to suit the Tamil audience. Though the first half has shades of the original, the latter half is different and oozes with nativity.

Unlike contemporary Tamil films, the movie doesn't boasts of any punch dialogue, boundless glamour or crass comedy. It is a riveting story that drives the momentum in the film. All the artistes need a pat for they have identified themselves as characters in the film.

In a nutshell, the movie is set around a man with inferiority complex over his average looks. An average looking youth, who gets married to a good-looking woman and his travails thereafter, forms the crux.

Sarathy's (Karunaas) is problem is that he is short, stout and dark skinned. With most of the girls he approached refusing to marry him, a fair and beautiful girl (Karthika) comes forward to accept Sarathy in her life.

But the real problem starts only after the marriage. His inferiority complex drives him to suspect his wife. At one point, things go beyond the control. How the couple overcomes all hurdles and reunites is the crux.

Karunaas is in his elements. He makes the audience laugh, cry and sympathizes for him. He lends dignity to the character and brings out the emotions of a youth struck by complex really well. Over all, he has rendered the role with grace and charm.

Equally impressive is Karthika. The girl, who acted opposite Sarath Kumar in ‘Nam Nadu’ is a perfect foil for the character. The cute-looking girl emotes at her best. A difficult character but done well in the end. Refreshing to see a girl giving a go by to glamour in recent Tamil cinema.

Nasser's brisk cameo towards the climax deserves a special mention. A great actor, he hogs all limelight doing a brief role.

Music by Dheena good. Specially the remix number featuring Karunaas, Grace Karunaas among others is one of the major highlight of the film, not to forget about a handful of scenes including the 'Saamiyov' comedy.

The film presented by Sun Pictures, is sure to leave an impression with the masses. The story and script are the real heroes in it. All applause to Karunaas for choosing such a good script. Half the battle was already won by them as they zeroed in on Sreenivasan's successful script.

A family entertainer, ‘Dindigul Sarathy’ is worth a watch. :D

[tscii:0f06f7cdd4]Dindigul Sarathy– Movie Review

Starring: Karunaas, Karthika, Saranya, Livingston, M S Bhaskar, Periyar Dasan, Manobala, Mayilsamy, Shanumuga Rajan
Direction: Siva Shanmugan
Music: Dhina
Production: Dream Towers

OK, for once we have a movie that can truly vouch for its distinctness. There are movies releasing every Friday that claim to be different, but this is one that wee all will have to agree is different. Like it or not is another matter. It is a remake of the Malayalam hit ‘Vadakkunokki Yanthram’, scripted and directed by Sreenivasan nearly two decades back.

Dindigul Sarathy marks the debut of Karunas as the hero, but not the regular hero. He handles the lead character which is as far from Kollywood’s hero concepts as it can get. Dindigul Sarathy deals with one man’s inferiority complex. One cannot recollect any movie that has dealt in so much detail with one man’s feeling of being a lesser mortal amongst his taller and fair skinned fellow beings.

Sarathy is an ordinary man. By ordinary, one means as ordinary as a person can get. Karuna’s appearance is of prime importance here. Short stout and dark skinned, he considers himself the antithesis of the good looking man and tries in vain many ways to improve his appearance, especially his complexion. But it is his complex that grows instead. He gets married, much to his delight, to a beautiful lady played by Karthika (Nam Naadu fame). Sarathy can’t believe his luck and at the same time gets the feeling that what has happened is too good to be true. His mind

starts playing games as he gets more and more desperate to know whether his wife really loves him. He suspects every other man who is taller or fairer to be eyeing his wife and lives in perpetual mental trauma. When the doubts start assailing him no end, he resorts to spying on his house to check his wife’s activities. Slowly he starts earning the wrath of everyone around him, his loved ones start leaving him, unable to stand his behaviour. It takes time before people realize that he has lost his mental balance. Does he come out a reformed man?

Dindigul Sarathy is a story that can be narrated in a few lines, but it is the screenplay that is important here. It contains all the antics and supposedly ingenious techniques devised by Sarathy to impress his wife and then later to spy on her. The film is full of such instances, many of which are amusing while some are not so. There is a particular incident where Sarathy’s wife says that she is a huge fan of Ajith. The doubting Sarathy immediately starts suspecting her associations with Ultimate Star. It was a joke that starts off well but is eventually stretched too far. There are also quite a few instances where Sarathy is quite vocal in his doubts about his wife’s loyalty which can put off quite a few family audiences.

The movie has a few songs, the original had only one. One can understand that the director had commercial compulsions to comply with, but he might have added one song too many. The ‘Dindigul Dindigul’ song that was used in the promo too makes an appearance and in general, all songs are thoroughly commercial masala numbers, Dhina has done a neat job. Karunas comes up with a polished performance in a role that suits him to perfection. He couldn’t have made a better choice. The surprise packet however is heroine Karthika who makes use of the given opportunity wonderfully, she is apt for the role. In Karunas’ presence, you wouldn’t generally require another comic artiste, but M.S. Bhaskar appears in a very amusing role as a budding philosopher who keeps advising Sarathy about life, actually creating more problems for him. Nasser makes a neat cameo at the climax.

Overall, Dindigul Sarathy is a product that comes out only once. Its distinctness is its defining strength, but it has got its commercial limitations at the box office. But the director’s (Sivashanmugam) decision to add a few elements for the fun loving audience might help it put up a brave fight. Looking at the quality of movies that are currently in theaters, Dindigul Sarathy has got its chances.

Verdict – Dindigul Sarathy– definitely different

Dindukkal Sarathy works

Sun Pictures' Tamil film Dindukkal Sarathy, directed by Siva Shanmugham and starring comic actor Karunas is inspired by Sreenivasan's Malayalam hit Vadakku Nokki Yanthram. It is about a dark, seemingly untalented man, who harbours deep-seated insecurities about his looks and personality, and yet manages to get a beautiful woman as a bride.

That becomes the bane of Dindukkal Sarathy's (Karunas) life. Even as his mother (Saranya) and poet friend Ka Ka Kavirayan (M S Bhaskar) hurry up with the wedding plans, Sarathy, who runs a press, spends time writing to psychologists about his 'terrible' looks, seeking advice on improving himself. It doesn't matter that his bride Vasanthi (Karthika) sees no problems marring their wedded bliss. But for Sarathy, life suddenly turns into a nightmare, where his brother, neighbours, policemen and practically every man is out to get his wife -- because he think he's inferior.

Matters go downhill quickly and within months, Sarathy's family becomes alienated from him. He loses his press, and becomes a near-lunatic. Life, it seems, holds no more pleasure, despite having a beautiful and loving wife.

For Karunas, this role is a dream come true. As the mildly suspicious husband at first and later, a chronically depressed maniac, he does a neat job. It says a lot for his work that after a certain point, he ceases to be just a comedian and invokes a good deal of sympathy. Indeed, his performance is bound to touch a chord in anyone who has suffered from inferiority complexes about their appearance.

Karthika is the good-humoured girl, who is puzzled about her husband's weird behaviour. When she finally understands his actions and breaks down, she makes you sympathise with her whole-heartedly.

But it is Saranya who clearly out-performs everyone. She's irritated, vulnerable and the irate mother-in-law to the last, a role that doesn't come her way too often.

M S Bhaskar's incomprehensible poetry produces guffaws, while the others, like Shanmugarajan, are simply added for colour.

Dhina's music is complete kuthu almost all the time, barring one Paruthikkadu, which seems to jump out at you with its sensitivity and sorrow.

Siva Shanmugam has worked quite hard on his script and it shows, as he balances humour with seriousness -- but he could have done well to trim the latter half.

If you're looking for a combination of humour and a reasonably good plot, here's your bet.

2.5 Stars
