Amaam. A remote chance of theatrical release. I saw "ETernal sunshine of spotless mind" in Studio 5. Just a single show was allocated, and the crowd rate was reasonably good, considering the 'romantic comedy' genre. I remember a friend (who is a girl) got disappointed after my recommendation. she critiqued "Kate winslet looks bad in different hair colors, Jim carrey was sleepwalking with no single comedy scene to offer, etc". Perhaps she'd have a different opinion if Julia Roberts and Richard Gere starred in it...

PR and Thilak: Most welcome. Pryor is most famous for being an all out, no holds barred comic. Pretty much all the modern day African-American raunchy stand-up (including Chris Rock, Dave Chapelle and Eddie Murphy) were born from Pryor's style.

I hate people who dimiss Carrey as a comedic actor. Ivanga ellaam Truman show ellaam paarkurathe illaya (in spite of the plot being incredibly melodramatic the perfromances were OK). He is also pretty good in Man on the Moon where he reprises Andy kaufman (Carrey widely admits that Kaufman is his biggest comedic influence).

I too am looking forward to Fincher's The curious case of Benjamin Button. Also looking forward to Frank Miller's Watchmen.

Complicateur, Snyder is doing "Watchmen" after "300". Miller hasn't written the script, and his only active involvement with DC comics is Batman series and Ronin (his best GN work IMO). But, I think I'll enjoy DC's "Watchmen" more than Miller's 300. Personally, I couldn't stand 300 for its allegory, and in fact, I hated the novel more as a result.

I haven't read "Watchmen", but I hear it released it around the same time as Miller's "The dark knight returns", with this DC redefined the medium, and paved way for adult-oriented, less campy graphic novels. It's of certain interest to see superheroes in such a world.

And by the way, did you check out trailer of Miller's solo debut "The spirit". It looks like he has captured it in a "Sin city" world, thus angering the fans of original comic strip. However, I wouldn't mind as I'm a big FM fan. :) Neo-noir fans wouldn't mind watching I hope.

Thilak: I was misinformed it seems. I was quite certain I had seen it as Frank Miller's Watchmen when I saw the first teaser trailer. O well I'm still looking forward to it.
I liked the graphic novel 300. I enjoyed the spectacle of the movie (benefit of watching it on IMAX) and was OK with it since it was fairly faithful to the original except with the additional scenes for Lena Headey.
I just looked up The Spirit, will watch the trailer when I get home tonite. Heavyweight cast but have not heard of Macht (who is playing the lead).

Polanski in pole position at Berlin film festival

The 76-year-old director, under house arrest in his chalet in Gstaad, is among the early frontrunners for prizes at the Berlin film festival this year, although the 10-day competition has yet to reach halfway.

The political thriller based on a novel by Robert Harris is one of 20 movies vying for the Golden Bear for best picture, which Polanski won in 1966 for "Cul-de-Sac."

The fact that it is among the favourites is remarkable given that post-production was completed while Polanski was in a Swiss prison and, later, under house arrest.

"With this immensely enjoyable, satisfyingly convoluted thriller he demonstrates exactly why he is still a force to be reckoned with," Wendy Ide wrote in the Times newspaper.

"From the opening scene it is clear Polanski had complete control, whether or not he was behind bars when he finished it."

The United States is seeking to extradite Polanski to face justice after he fled the country in 1978 on the eve of his formal sentencing for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian said: "This is his most purely enjoyable picture for years, a Hitchcockian nightmare with a persistent, stomach-turning sense of disquiet, brought off with confidence and dash."

Hollywood trade publications were more circumspect, however.

Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter described the film about a disgraced British prime minister loosely based on Tony Blair as "sleek" and "hypnotic," "but once the credit roll frees you from its grip, it doesn't bear close scrutiny."

Derek Elley of Variety was one of the few dissenting voices in Berlin:

"All the ingredients are here for a rip-roaring political thriller ... but ... Polanski simply transfers Harris' undistinguished prose direct to the screen and ... there's little wow factor in the revelations as they appear."

GRITTY DRAMAS ALSO SHINE

The Ghost Writer stars Ewan McGregor as a writer brought in to spice up the memoirs of an ex-premier (Pierce Brosnan).

The politician soon becomes embroiled in a bid to have him tried for war crimes, while the writer, who remains nameless, begins to uncover uncomfortable truths about the former leader and his wife, played by Olivia Williams.

Polanski is not alone in impressing critics in Berlin this year, with two other competition entries scoring strongly.

"If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle" is part of the "new wave" of Romanian film-making that has wowed festivals around the world in recent years.

It follows an 18-year-old young offender who is days away from being released from a correction facility. He discovers his mother, who abandoned him as a child, plans to take his brother to Italy, forcing him to take dramatic measures to break free.

Screen International wrote of its "outstanding quality," and the same publication was even more positive about "Submarino," a tough Danish drama which contains scenes of domestic abuse.

"Rarely has there been such a downbeat feelgood movie, but feelgood it is: Submarino works like an emotional massage, leaving the viewer pummelled but invigorated," Screen wrote.

The Berlin film festival awards ceremony is held on February 20.

The paper quotes a spokesman for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as saying that Day-Lewis spent much of his time in the House of Representatives chamber in the Old Capitol. And while the producers visited areas of the presidential museum dedicated to Lincoln's assassination and funeral, Day-Lewis opted not to, reportedly explaining, "I'm portraying Lincoln alive and I choose not to go any farther."
http://movies.ign.com/articles/113/1136074p1.html

'Daniel Day-Lewis would have always been counted as one of the greatest of actors, were he from the silent era, the golden age of film or even some time in cinema's distant future. I am grateful and inspired that our paths will finally cross with 'Lincoln',' hollywood.com quoted Spielberg as saying.

'Throughout his career, he has been exceptionally selective in his choice of material, which makes us feel even more fortunate that he has chosen to join with us for 'Lincoln',' said Stacey Snider, co-chairman and CEO of DreamWorks Studios.

[tscii:8976463763]Don't know where to post this. Excited? Thilak?

http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2010/12/15/robert-de-niro-irishman-companion-film-martin-scorsese/

When Robert De Niro first told us of his plans with Martin Scorsese to shoot a sort of meta-companion film to their upcoming organized crime tale, "The Irishman," we were stumped.

The idea, De Niro explained, was to make a second film that was "reminiscent of a kind of '8 1/2,' 'La Dolce Vita,' [a] certain kind of biographical, semi-biographical type of Hollywood movie — a director and the actor — based on things Marty and I have experienced and kind of overlapping them."

That sounded like a killer idea, even if we didn't know exactly what he was talking about. That was back in April. When we caught up with the Oscar-winner this weekend, while he was promoting "Little Fockers," however, De Niro cast doubt on the idea that the second film, which Eric Roth ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") was writing, would come to fruition.

"We have a very good script that Steven Zaillian wrote, and that we're definitely doing," he said of the straight-forward "Irishman" flick. "The other idea is more ambitious, to do one with Eric doing a flashback/flashforward kind of thing and to do two movies in one and then separate them as movies. I don't know if that will happen."

As Scorsese revealed recently, "The Irishman" is still on track, with financing currently coming together with an eye toward starting production next year. Based on the novel "I Heard You Paint Houses," the story follows a World War II vet-turned-mob hitman with rumored ties to the assassinations of President Kennedy and Jimmy Hoffa. In the same conversation, De Niro confirmed that Al Pacino and Joe Pesci will also be taking part in the first film.

"[W]e do have the one that we're definitely doing. Me, Joe Pesci, Pacino and Marty Scorsese directing," he said.

And while De Niro remains interested in making that Fellini-esque second film, he didn't sound hopeful that it will kick into gear. "I would like it to happen if we can get it going," he said.

Do you hope De Niro and Scorsese make "The Irishman" companion film a reality?[/tscii:8976463763]

It's fairly okay. The ending has that brilliant silhouette work of the Batman symbol formed by the skycrapers.

What's also good news (but totally expected) is Bane's look at end of the trailer. Much unlike Joel Schumcher's tripe. Nolan has consistently got the look right. Ra' al Ghul, Scarecrow, Two-face & Joker stands testament to that.

Depends really. Although Burton goes around saying he got in love with world of comics & Batman from Alan Moore's The Killing Joke, it's Nolan who gets the tone, mood & character arcs right.

kid-glove
20th July 2011, 04:03 PM
Agreed Groucho. I think it's a significant film for many reasons. Burton's whimsical touch falls in line with most Batman comics. Nicholson's turn set the tone for other film adaptations (incl. Nolan) with antagonist being given as much (if not more) importance than Superhero.

Was just stating that Burton actually makes a departure(knowing or unknowingly) from his main source of inspiration (despite taking elements from it), mirroring other famous batman comics (but again not a deliberate choice I feel) no less significant.

Nolan sticks to Miller's YO & Moore's TKJ as they have that contemporary feel with obvious parallels to current political climate. And it also aligns well with his casting. Ledger's interpretation is original & definitive, but I'd wager he had read TKJ to get that level of derangement, & dark cynicism of the character. And his inclinations towards Mann, Scott & Wachowskis helps realize the Miller/Moore universe..

Thanks Feddy for the trailer. In the closing ceremony of Cannes, Nicolas Winding Refn won best director & thanked the jury for picking out a 'cinematic film' & recite an anecdote about contacting Gaspar Noe for Head Smashing technique. That got me hooked instantly. :) Wanted to check it out for Ryan Gosling (about whom I've written elsewhere, a contemporary 'acting great' in the making) too. NWR's Pusher/Bronson aren't 'great films', they're flawed but it shows great promise of vision & control. A 'director' is making it, not merely 'illustrating words'. The sense of control in a motley of tones in Pusher trilogy and to bring out brilliant Kim Bodnia / Mikkelsen/Zlatko Buric/Tom Hardy performances shows that he'd make a masterpiece or two in coming years. Hope 'Drive' is the one. 'The Driver' & 'Bullitt' seem to be major influences, but knowing NWR-Gosling, it could be more of Hellman-Oates films (the Man & his machine/rooster), & not to mention my fav. pair of 'Man in the City' 67 classics (Boorman's Point blank / Melville's Le Samourai). In fact, I'd think it's about as much influenced by Yates 'Eddie Coyle' as his 'Bullitt'. That kind of marriage could be harmonious to yours truly. (To self: Dei mOdhala Padatha paaru da)

Old news, any updates. India-vAme?

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/bond-23-shoot-india-reports-184438

Local media placed Sam Mendes on a reconnaissance trip in Mumbai.
James Bond could well be returning to India for a second time (after 1983's Octopussy) to shoot sequences for the 23rd installment of the franchise, according to local media reports Tuesday.
The Mid-Day newspaper quoted an unnamed source stating, “(Bond 23) Director Sam Mendes recently made a hush-hush visit to Mumbai along with production designer Terry Bamber in mid-April for the film's recce. The movie will be shot in Mumbai and Goa during the monsoon season on a month-long schedule.”
A spokesperson for EON Productions, which is producing the next Bond film, told The Hollywood Reporter that "nothing has been confirmed yet."
The monsoon season begins in late June for about two months. The western resort town of Goa was also featured in a car chase sequence in 2004's The Bourne Supremacy.
The report also indicated that line production for Bond 23 will be handled by Mumbai-based India Take One Productions which worked on Slumdog Millionaire; the outfit also handled line production for director Ang Lee's Life Of Pi starring Tobey Maguire that recently filmed in southern India.
The last time the James Bond franchise visited India was with the Roger Moore-starrer Octopussy that was shot in Agra and Udaipur with the film featuring Indian actor Kabir Bedi and a guest appearance by well-known tennis star Vijay Amritraj.
Meanwhile, Mumbai has also seen a recent shoot for the upcoming Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol that filmed some second unit shots in the city. Online portal Rediff.com recently posted some pictures of the shoot featuring a body double for Tom Cruise seen with a BMW sports car.
Directed by Brad Bird, MI:4 will also feature popular Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor (Slumdog Millionaire) in his first mainstream Hollywood outing after the actor last year featured in the final season of Fox TV's 24 show.
India has also served as a location for another recent international production, director Roland Joffe's Singularity starring Josh Hartnett, Neve Campbell and Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/21/christopher-nolan-spills-_n_1105617.html#s350594

When we last left Bruce Wayne, he was a debonaire aristocrat in the prime of his life. He had just defeated the Joker, was in prime physical shape and had restored order to Gotham's night. So as disconcerting as it may be, don't be surprised to find a much more brittle Dark Knight when you see him next.

While next summer's sequel will hit big screens four years after "The Dark Knight" bowed in 2008, director Christopher Nolan revealed the film will double that in time passed between movies, and will provide a definite finale to the storyline he began with, fittingly, "Batman Begins."

"It's really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story," he told Empire Magazine. "We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after 'The Dark Knight.' So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state."

The villain, this time, will be Bane. We've seen plenty of photos of the Tom Hardy-portrayed freak of nature, with his bulging muscles and mask that provides life-sustaining gasses. In the comics lore, Bane breaks Batman's back, and we've seen plenty of indication that some massive brawling will go down. In fact, an all out, hand-to-hand rumble was filmed earlier this month in New York City, and as Hardy told Empire, it's going to feature some dirty grappling.

"It's not about fighting. It's about carnage," Hardy said. "The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it's nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action."

Hardy certainly has the background to make it happen; he starred as a brutal brawler in the film "Bronson," and in the recent MMA movie, "Warrior."

Interesting !

Btw. DDL is going to shoot Lincoln with Spielberg simultaneously with this:

"He has another feature ready to film next summer too: ‘Silence’ is an adaptation of a Shusaku Endo novel about two Portuguese priests who travel to Japan in the seventeenth century, and it will reunite Scorsese with Daniel Day-Lewis, and see him working with Benicio del Toro and Gael García Bernal for the first time. Jay Cocks, who wrote ‘The Age of Innocence’ and ‘Gangs of New York’, has penned the script."

'Dark Knight' rises briefly on IMAX screens

Director Christopher Nolan showed off six minutes of the highly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises on Thursday night. It's clear the comic book hero will have a fight on his hands.

The extended IMAX footage for Nolan's third, and final, venture into the Batman series featured a lot of Bane, the newest, macabrely-masked villain (played by Tom Hardy).

The prologue, as the footage is being called, will be released on several IMAX screens on Dec. 16 before Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.

"We're trying to begin in a surprising place," Nolan told USA TODAY after the Dark Knight footage screening. "It's a good chance of letting people know where this is all going to go."

The brief journey is a breathtaking airplane action sequence which makes clear that havoc lies ahead for the caped crusader. Centered around the film's opening sequence, it shows the masked Hardy displaying formidable high-altitude badness.

"Tom Hardy is an incredible talent," said Nolan. The two men worked together on 2010's Inception. "In this he is so limited in his movement with the mask, but he brings something to every gesture."

Of course, most every gesture in this prologue means pain to Hardy's adversaries.

Because the film's introduction focuses on the new baddie in town, Christian Bale (who plays both Batman and Bruce Wayne) appears only briefly. Anne Hathaway, new to the series, is seen fleetingly as Catwoman.

Nolan called it all "a little taste" of the movie which he is still heavily editing.

Allowing many of the IMAX camera-shot scenes to be seen on massive screens gives people the opportunity to see Dark Knight in "the true film grandeur which is being chipped away" through progressively smaller screens, said Nolan.

The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012.

8 (!!!) minute trailer.

Scene where Salander gets molested is the one which clearly explains Fincher's vision towards the book. The book itself isn't that deep and all, waiting badly to see what Fincher has added to it. The swedish version too wasn't that great IMO. Thanks for the link, kidglove.

kid-glove
11th December 2011, 01:15 AM
Yeah.

I don't think TSN was that 'deep' and all. It could have been a routine Sorkin talkie but for the way Fincher translates it makes it seem much deeper than it really is. That's what he does.

kid-glove
11th December 2011, 01:21 AM
Even though I haven't read the book, I do think the psychological nuance, infliction & entropy of revenge should be of great depth considering the subject matter. IF not, it could only be a failure.

I'd have always thought this kind of thematic challenge was meant for Polanski. In Fincher, they found someone close to that kind of level.

kubrick
11th December 2011, 02:39 PM
If only Polanski had directed this film it would have been such a ROFL moment. This is a very Fincher kind of a book that's why I thought it to be a cliche for him to direct it because I dont think there is a way for him to out do Zodiac with this material.

TTSS should be good. Great filmmaker, superb cast. Amazing trailer. The mood & atmospherics looked spot-on. The translation should be more formal than literal.

I've seen the BBC mini-series in yeeteeb during office hours, it made a great impression on me that I got my hands on original DVD, seated on my lap as I type. I am going to watch it again, in lieu of the film's release.

MIB3, no expectation, as long as there's Smith and Jones, I watch. I wonder when TFI is going to have a hang-on-to franchise that you can release when your market is down, or sustaining market. EllArum onnu vachurukAngga. Smith - MIB. Cruise - MI. Downey Jr got two, IM and SH (can't wait for that one).

That's the film where we actually see him for an extended period of time. He used to act in short roles, happy to be in background. Films like Layer Cake, Marie Antoinette, Black hawk down, TV like Band of Brothers (lost count of the British talents to come out of it btw!), Sweeney Todd (BBC), that the same young skinny dude would evolve into physicality of Bronson, Bane & Capone is little freaky. Something subliminally persuasive about the guy, one is reminded of Brando in that respect. It just radiates outta him, without breaking a sweat.

There is an awful theatre screen capture of comic-con 2014 teaser of Batman Vs Superman, if you are interested to look into it. What I make out is :
Batman (Ben Affleck) is next to the Bat Signal Projector looking at the drak grey skies with glowing white eyes. All of a sudden in a flash of the thunder, Superman (Henry Cavill) is seen standing midair with glowing red eyes. All along smashing music which is a mix of thunder, this and that (by fantastic Hans Zimmer). The teaser closes, after few close shots of the "glowing-eyed gentle-men staring at each other", with a new BvS movie logo. Its quite dark and terrifying by the looks ! Hope Zynder doesn't massacre this awesome dual.

And hope they officially release it on internet, soon.

The Hateful Eight teaser gives out the unexpected 8 in a Quentin sytled bloody background, where their title cards are not only numbered but also a respective design to the category they belong to is hanged down. Few caption read in the begining which says that 'they all discovered something in common' and towards the end joins its meaning with the Film's title. The film promises as a glorious 70MM super Cinemascope which will be released during the year 2015.

Here is the much awaited Hateful Eight :

1. Major Marquis Warren “The Bounty Hunter”
2. John Ruth “The Hangman”
3. Daisy Domergue “The Prisoner”

5. Bob “The Mexican”
