Nikolai Gogol, one of the icons of Russian Literature, is known for his short stories and the play, ‘Inspector-General' (also known as ‘Government Inspector'). Wanting to write a play, he sought the help of Pushkin, another icon, who told him about his personal experience when he was mistaken for a government officer on a visit to a small town. Based on this premise, Gogol wrote the play, in which a person visiting a village is taken to be the Inspector-General who was expected to investigate the fraudulent affairs of the village chief. Trying to soft-soap him, the village chief and others treat him like a king, even allowing him to flirt with his wife and daughter. He takes advantage of them all and then scared he might be exposed, leaves the village after being given a grand send off. It's then that the real ‘IG' comes to investigate the fraudulent affairs of the chief!

This play has been adapted in many languages. In Inspector-General, Danny Kaye, the comedian singing star of Hollywood, played the lead, and the movie was a big success. Noted filmmaker Chetan Anand wrote and directed a film, Afsar (Officer), in 1950, with his brother Dev Anand and Suraiya playing the lead roles. Interestingly in the credits, the story is attributed to Chetan Anand and Gogol!

In 1965, the intellectual Hindi filmmaker, actor and producer I. S. Johar made Namaste in which two people come to a village and change places which leads to more fun!

Well-known Tamil playwright, writer and occasional filmmaker B. S. Ramaiah adapted it to the stage as ‘President Panchatcharam', put on board by S. V. Sahasranamam. It became popular and producer and studio-owner AL. Srinivasan produced the movie version, bankrolling the project of his friends V. Arunachalam and well-known orator Chinna Annamalai. The film was President Panchatcharam.

A District Board president (Sahasranamam) has a lovely daughter (Saroja Devi) studying in Madras. He and his wife have in their minds different young men as prospective husbands for her. But the young woman falls in love with her friend Sikhamani (Rajendran)!

The two aspiring bridegrooms come to the small town to fix the marriage. At that time, the president receives a letter that the government is sending an officer to secretly investigate his fraudulent affairs! The daughter's lover who leaves home arrives to meet her, and he is mistaken for the official! The fun starts and after many complications, true love triumphs…

Besides Saroja Devi, Rajendran and Sahasranamam in major roles, the others who contributed to the interesting development of the story included S. N. Lakshmi, T. R. Ramachandran, Chanthini, ‘Kuladeivam' Rajagopal, Kumudhini and Balasubramaniam. There was also a dance sequence by Sayee-Subbulakshmi who were active at that time.

Written by B. S. Ramaiah, the film was directed by A. Bhim Singh. The music was composed by G. Ramanathan.

The lyrics were by Subramania Bharati, Kannadasan, Ku. Ma. Balasubramaniam and others. T. M. Soundararajan, Sirgazhi Govindarajan, P. B. Sreenivos, M. L. Vasanthakumari, (Radha) Jayalakshmi, P. Susheela, Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi and Jamuna Rani sang the songs.

There was also a musical play in the film based on V. O. Chidambaram Pillai.

President Panchatcharam was a success at the box office.

Remembered for: the interesting screenplay and good performances by Sahasranamam, Rajendran and Saroja Devi.

Kalyana Parisu was a big hit on its release and certainly gave an indication that C.V. Sridhar would be a director to watch in the future. It was remade a number of times by C.V. Sridhar in other languages using a number of the same cast, and ANR took on the role of Bhaskar in the Telegu remake the following year. Nazrana, the Hindi remake starring Raj Kapoor and Vyjayanthimala also starred Gemini Ganesan playing the role of Vasanthi’s potential groom. It’s not a film I would watch again and again, but is one for those days when a slice of melodrama is required. All the lead actors are excellent, slightly excessive histrionics aside, but in particular Kalyana Parisu is worth watching for Saroja Devi who really shines. 4 stars.

Saroja Devi remains the only Indian Film Heroine to do 154 films as the main lead heroine in just a span of 23 years from 1955-1978.
Saroja thought of retiring from films after completing the films she had signed before her scheduled marriage in 1967 and not do any films from 1968.But when she in 1969 came to attend premier of Aradhana to Mumbai, she was advised by MGR and Dilip Kumar to continue acting in films as she had ability to do well at least for another 12 years as an actress. Saroja acted as lead female heroine until 1985.
Thaya Katha Thanayan opposite MGR was her 62nd film since her debut in 1955. It's a world record for appearing in 62 films as female lead heroine within 8 years.
Sri Renukadevi Mahathme, Kannada film released in 1977 was Saroja Devi's 150th film in her career.
She did 161 films as the main female lead heroine from 1955-1984: she had minimum one film releasing every year from 1955-1978 with her as the main lead heroine. Its a world record.

But Panmasri Sarojadevi is the best in all round and her talent is uncompaitablewith others, because due to her natural acting

நடிகர் திலகத்தின் பல வெற்றிப்படங்களின் கதாநாயகி. இந்த கர்நாடகத்துப் பைங்கிளி. கமர்ஷியல் கதாநாயகியாய், கவர்ச்சிப் பாவையாய் தமிழ்ப்படங்களில் வலம் வந்தவர் நடிகர் திலகத்துடன் ஆரம்ப காலங்களில் ஜோடி சேர இயலவில்லை. தங்கமலை ரகசியம், 'சபாஷ் மீனா' என்று நடிகர் திலகத்தின் படங்களில் முக்கிய வேடங்களில் இவர் நடித்திருந்தாலும் 1959 இல் வெளியான காலத்தால் அழிக்கமுடியாத காவியமான 'பாகப் பிரிவினை' யில் தலைவரின் நேரடி ஜோடியாக நடிக்கும் தங்க வாய்ப்பை பெற்றார். அழகுப் பதுமையாய், அலங்காரப் பாவையாய் முத்திரை குத்தப்பட்ட இவரது இன்னொரு பரிமாணம் 'பாகப்பிரிவினை' படத்தின் மூலம் வெளிச்சத்துக்கு வந்தது. சிறந்த நடிப்பையும் தன்னால் வழங்க முடியும் என்று நிரூபித்து தன் கிளாமர் இமேஜ் என்ற வட்டத்தை விட்டு வெளியே வந்து, நடிகர் திலகத்துடன் ஜோடி சேர்ந்து சிறந்த நடிப்புத் திறமை கொண்ட நடிகை என்ற பெயரை வாங்கத் துவங்கினார். இதற்குக் காரணம் நான் சொல்லித்தான் தெரிய வேண்டுமா! கம்பன் வீட்டுக் கட்டுத் தறியும் கவி பாடுமே! . அதே போல நடிகர் திலகத்துடன் இணைந்தாலே நடிப்பும் தன்னால் வந்து விடுமே!

கன்னையாவுக்கேற்ற பொன்னியாய் 'தாழையாம் பூ முடித்து தடம் பார்த்து நடை நடந்த' கனப்பொருத்தமான ஜோடியாய் சேர்ந்து 'அட நம்ம சரோஜாதேவியா இது' என்று அனைவரும் வாய் பிளக்குமளவிற்கு நடித்து பெரும் பெயர் பெற்றுவிட்டார். படம் சூப்பர் டூப்பர் ஹிட்டடித்தது அன்றும் இன்றும், என்றும். பைங்கிளியின் வாழ்விலே திருப்புமுனை. நடிகர் திலகத்துடன் ஜோடி சேர்ந்ததால் திறமையான நடிகை என்று பெயரும் புகழும் பெருக ஆரம்பித்தது. அடுத்து வந்த 'இரும்புத்திரை'யில் வாய்ப்பு. ஆனால் ஜோடி கிடையாது.

1959-ல் வெளியான தன்னுடைய 'கல்யாணப்பரிசு' பிரம்மாண்ட வெற்றியின் (கதாநாயகி சரோஜாதேவி) காரணமாகவும், ராசியான கதாநாயகி என்ற சென்ட்டிமென்ட் காரணமாகவும்1960 இல் வெளியான 'விடிவெள்ளி' யில் ஸ்ரீதர் இவரை நடிகர் திலகத்தின் ஜோடியாக்கினார். இதிலும் அருமையான ரோல். 'கொடுத்துப் பார் பார் உண்மை அன்பை' என்று அன்பைப் பொழிந்து இரண்டாவது முறையாக அமைந்த இந்த ஜோடி மீண்டும் வெற்றிக்கனியைப் பறித்து சுவைத்து மகிழ்ந்தது. ராசியான ஜோடி என்ற முத்திரையும் விழத் தொடங்கியது. சரோஜாதேவி வாழ்விலும் விடிவெள்ளி முளைத்தது.

அடுத்த வருடம் 1961 மிகப் பெரிய திருப்பத்தை இந்த ஜோடிக்கு ஏற்படுத்தித் தந்ததோடல்லாமல் அளவற்ற பெண் ரசிகர்களை நடிகர் திலகத்திற்குப் பெற்றுத் தந்தது. அதுமட்டுமல்ல... கணவன் மனைவி என்றால் டாக்டர் ரவி சாந்தி தம்பதியர் போல இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு குடும்ப இலக்கணமே வகுத்துக் கொடுத்தது இந்த 'பாலும் பழமும்' ஜோடி. படமோ மெகா ஹிட். நடிகர் திலகத்துடன் சரோஜாதேவி ஜோடியாக நடித்த மூன்றாவது படமும் அவரை புகழின் உச்சிக்கே கொண்டு சென்று விட்டது.

சரோஜாதேவி அவர்களே "நடிகர் திலகத்துடன் ஜோடி சேர்ந்த பின்னரே நல்ல திறமை வாய்ந்த நடிகை என்ற புகழை அடைந்தேன். இந்தப் பெருமையெல்லாம் நடிகர் திலகத்தையே சாரும்" என்று பலமுறை பேட்டிகளில் மறக்காமல் கூறியிருக்கிறார்.

பின் 1962 -ல் 'பார்த்தால் பசிதீரும்' படத்தில் இந்த ஜோடி இணைந்து மீண்டும் சாதனை புரிந்தது. 'கொடியசைந்ததும் காற்று வந்ததா... காற்று வந்ததும் கொடியசைந்ததா...நடிகர் திலகத்துடன் இணைந்ததால் நடிப்பு வந்ததா.... நடிப்பு வந்ததால் நடிகர் திலகத்துடன் இணைய முடிந்ததா... தற்போது பெங்களூருவில் வசித்து வரும் சரோஜாதேவி தனது வரவேற்பறையில் மாட்டியிருக்கும் புகைப்படம் என்ன தெரியுமா?

பின் அதே வருடம் வளர்பிறை. அதையடுத்து 1962-இல் மீண்டும் ஒரு இமாலய சாதனை புரிந்தது இந்த வானம்பாடி நடிகர் திலகத்துடன் ஜோடி சேர்ந்து. ஆம்... தமிழ் திரையுலகை ஒரு உலுக்கு உலுக்கிய 'ஆலயமணி' தியாகுவின் மனைவியாக சரோஜாதேவி. மிக அற்புதமாக நடித்து காதலிக்கும், மனைவிக்கும் உள்ள வித்தியாசங்களை கண்ணியமாக உணர்த்தி, அந்த முள் மீது நடக்கும் கேரக்டரை நடிகர் திலகத்தின் வழிநடத்தல்கள் மூலம் அற்புதமாக பரிமளிக்க வைத்தார் இந்தப் பைங்கிளி. படமோ ராட்சஷ வெற்றி. உன்னதமான பல உயரங்களை நடிகர் திலகத்தின் ஜோடியாக பல படங்களில் நடித்ததன் மூலம் அடைந்தார் சரோஜாதேவி. அது மட்டுமல்ல. விருதுகள் பலவும் அவரை நாடி வந்தன. பொன்னை விரும்பும் பூமியிலே தியாகுவை விரும்பிய ஓருயிராக அனைவர் நெஞ்சங்களிலும் அந்தக் கதாபாத்திரத்தின் மூலம் இன்று வரை நிலைத்து வாழ்கிறார் இந்த கொஞ்சும் கிளி.

1963 -ல் வெளியான 'குலமகள் ராதை' யிலும் இந்த ஜோடி அட்டகாசம் செய்தது. "ராதே உனக்குக் கோபம் ஆகாதேடி" என்று பைங்கிளியின் பின்பக்கமாக நின்று அவரின் இரு ஜடைகளையும் நம்மவர் பிடித்து இழுக்க, இருவர் பிம்பங்களும் எதிரே இருக்கும் கண்ணாடியில் பிரதிபலிக்கும் அழகை மறக்க முடியுமா! அருமையான ஜோடியாக அமைந்த இன்னொரு வெற்றிப் படம்.

அதே வருடம் பக்ஷி ராஜாவின் கடைசிப்படம் 'கல்யாணியின் கணவன்'. இதிலும் இந்த ஜோடியே ஆக்கிரமித்தது. அதுவும் முதல் பாதியில் இருவரும் பண்ணும் சேட்டைகளும் அமர்க்களங்களும் மறக்க முடியாதவை. நமது ராஜ சபையிலே ஒரே கொண்டாட்டம்தான். இரவுபகல் தூக்கமில்லாமல் செய்த ஸ்டைல் டூயட்டை மறக்க இயலுமா?

1964 -ல் இந்த ஜோடியின் இன்னொரு சுனாமி. இது கலர் சுனாமி. பிரம்மாண்ட சுனாமி. 'புதிய பறவை' என்னும் சுனாமி. அதுவரை கறுப்புவெள்ளையில் பார்த்து பரவசப்பட்ட இந்த ஜோடி வண்ணத்தில் நம் எண்ணமெல்லாம் குளிர காட்சியளித்தது. கண்பட்டுவிடக் கூடிய அளவிற்கு இன்றைய இளையதலை முறையினரும் வியந்து பார்க்கும் அதிசயத்தை நிகழ்த்திக் காட்டியது இந்த ஜோடி.'காதல் பாட்டுப் பாட காலம் இன்னும் இல்லை' என்ற வண்ண மயிலாளிடம் 'ஆஹா!...மெல்ல நட... மெல்ல நட... உன் மேனி என்னாகும்?' என்று அழகன் அக்கறைப்பட, சிட்டுக்குருவி முத்தம் கொடுத்து சேர்ந்ததைப் பார்த்து அன்றைய திரையுலகில் புதிய பறவைகளாய் பறந்து வந்து புதுமை புரிந்த ஜோடி. ஜோடிகள் எல்லாவற்றிக்கும் அப்போதைய உச்சகட்டம். அபிநய சரஸ்வதியை ரசிப்பதெற்கென்றே கூட ஒரு தனிக் கூட்டம் அலைந்தது. இந்த புதிய பறவை மட்டும் பழைய பறவையாக ஆகவே ஆகாது. தரத்திலும் சரி! வசூலிலும் சரி!

1968-இல் 'என் தம்பி'யில் நேற்றுப் பிறந்தவர் போல நடிகர் திலகம் அழகில் மிளிர நேரம் தெரிந்து வந்த அபிநய சரஸ்வதி சரியான ஜோடி"என் தம்பி"யில். 'நெஞ்சத்தில் நடுக்கம் ஏனோ' என்று தேவி கேட்டதும் 'நடுக்கமா...எனக்கா?' என்று சாட்டையடி தந்து சடையிலிருந்து பூவையும் ,பாலாஜி கையில் இருந்து சிகரெட் கேஸையும் நடிகர் திலகம் சாட்டையால் பறிக்கும் போதும், சரோஜாதேவி சுழன்று சுழன்று ஆடும் போதும் ஜனம் ஆர்ப்பரித்ததே. அந்த வெற்றிக்கும் இந்த ஜோடிதானே காரணம்!

அதே வருடம் அஞ்சல் பெட்டி 520. காமெடியிலும் கொடி நாட்டுவோம் என்று நிரூபித்து இதிலும் வெற்றி கண்டது இந்த ஜோடி. குறைந்த செலவில் சிம்பிள் சினிமா என்றாலும் திருமகள் தேவையான அளவிற்கு தயாரிப்பாளர் வீட்டில் தேடி சென்று வாசம் செய்த படம். பத்துப் பதினாறு முத்தமிட்ட ஜோடி.

1971-ல் 'அருணோதயம்' கண்டு 'முத்து பவழம் முக்கனி சர்க்கரை' அளித்த ஜோடி அதே வருடம் 'தேனும் பாலும்' அளித்து மனதினில் வெள்ளம் கரைபுரண்டோடச் செய்தது.

பிறகென்ன... நடிகர் திலகத்திற்கும் வயதாகாதா? வயதானதும் ஒன்ஸ்மோர் இந்த ஜோடியை 'ஒன்ஸ்மோரி'ல் நடிக்க வைத்தார் இயக்குனர் சந்திரசேகரன் இன்றைய இளம் கதாநாயகன் விஜய்யுடன். பல சாகசங்களை நிகழ்த்திய ஜோடி ஒரு நீண்ட இடைவெளிக்குப் பின்னர் மீண்டும் ஜோடியாக சாகசம் நடத்தி படத்தை மாபெரும் வெற்றியாகியது. அதற்கு தங்கள் பழைய இருவர் உள்ளமும் கலந்தது. அனைவரையும் கவர்ந்தது. வயதாகியும் மீண்டும் போராடி சாந்தாவைக் கைபிடித்தார் நாயகன்.

மிக்க நன்றி வாசு. சரோஜா தேவியின் நடிப்பு திறமையை முழுதும் வெளி கொணர்ந்த படங்கள் பாக பிரிவினை, பாலும் பழமும்,ஆலய மணி,இருவர் உள்ளம்,புதிய பறவை, தேனும் பாலும் . வயது,நிறம், தோற்றம் எல்லாவற்றிலும் சிவாஜி-சரோஜாதேவி படு பாந்தமான பொருத்தமான ஜோடி. முக்கியமாக அன்பளிப்பு, அஞ்சல் பெட்டி 520 போன்ற படங்களில் இருவருமே அவ்வளவு அழகு.
