Thank you for your patience! I don't aspire to get the data or lyric right as much as I strive to keep remembrance well-oiled...

Saravanan........I share ur perception on the Kunkumam song..right from the first time I saw the film sequence I am still wondering how Nigar thilagam could do such a fantasic lip sync for TMS's rendition!!!!

And I have always loved the slow lilting caressing songs and nothing is a more perfect example from the yester years...

Pon Enben Siru poo enben SJ/PBS- PK Magal?

Listen to this song all alone on a starry moonlit night with a nip of blossom in the air......

Thaen Sindhudhey Vanam: As Raj said, it is from PoNNukku Thanga Manasu starring Sivakumar and Jayachitra drenched in rains... The owner of lovely tune GKV used this in Telugu and later came to Tamil and Kannada. Tel-version was an soothing solo by PS. Anayasamaaga paaduvaar :-)

Janakan Pon Maane is by SPB+PS from Oru peNNin kadhai (this also tuned by GKV; all songs are hit sung by PS with SPB and PJ). Aruna and Sumathi acted in this song seq with a newcomer in between. Sudhakar and Rathi were the lead pair.

Mayakkum Malai Pozhudhey Nee Po Po: As Raj mentioned, it is lovely duet by Jikki and AM Raja. I listened to the same song in Gangai amaran's music prog some time in 1995 where Jikki sung the song with her son Mahesh (100/100 same voice of AMR). The song featured MGR with "Meesai" G. Varalakshmi :-)). She never allows MGR to touch her hahahha

Niththam Niththam Oru Puththam Pudhiya Sugam: Superb solo by TMS for the energetic hero Jaishankar from Nootrukku Nooru (dir: KB). Music by the ever-melodious V.Kumar. TMS sings as if he acts in that song... superb mannn
Naan Thedinaen...

Moham Vandhu Muththam: is from Nermai by PS (Solo, I think)

Naazanjali thodara en manamaarndha vazhthukkaL :-0

Mythila, Raj, Saravanan, Subbu, Surya -

Thank you for joining this OMNIbus of memories, medleys, and "mis"placed lyrics...This community of Lost & Found songs is, as Saravanan said, a real "solai" for those of us in the (tamizhilla) "paalai". I am just happy to recall these songs, it is like having a conversation with a long lost friend!
(This is also the closest I've been to Vividh Bharati in more than a decade :-))

Surya - VON was by MSV. It had another fine duet "Vaendum Vaendum Indha (or Ungal?) Uravu, Vennpaniththendral Ulla Varaiyil"... and with that...

I can feel the internal tape spool...and spool...

Raja Raja Srirajan Vandhan
Raja Bhogam (or Yogam) Thara Vandhan...

Manjal Mugame Varuga
Mangala Vilakke Varuga
Konjum Thamizhe Varuga
Kodaanakodi Tharuga...

Kadhal Rajiyam Enadhu
Anbuk (or Andhak) Kaval Rajiyam Unadhu
Idhu Mannan Madaththu Nilavu

(TMS-PS Mannavan Vandhanadi - MSV)

(MVD-VJ Chinna Chinna Veedu Katti - SG)

Inbame Undhan Paer Penmaiyo
En Idhayakkani Naan Sollum Sollil
Mazhalai Kili
En Nenjil Aadum
Paruvakkodi

(PS-TMS - MSV. This song from Idhayakkani was inescapable for nearly 6 months if not more. It was all about that ushnam ushered in by Radha Saluja, I guess! :-))

Thangachci Siriththale
Sevvidhazh Viriththale
Malligai Sirippale
Mounam Kalaiththale
Edharkaga...Adharkaga

(MVD - Bhairavi? MSV?)

Unnaik Kann Thedudhey

(Kanavane Kann Kanda Deivam. Ragini as the goddess of Lethe :-)

Avar Ennaiththaan
Eppadi Solvenadi....

Have to mention this song "Sugam sugam, adhu thunbamaana inbamaanadhu" by Suseela from "Thangai" - absolutely unforgettable rendition - the charm & innocence is really overwhelming! The lyrics also portray a higher form of love which is very refreshing to hear.

Raj- why do you torture me thus? Ever since I noticed your mention of Pon enbatho poo enbatho this afternoon, I have been in another world— a world far way, in time and in place- oh the exquisite bliss that the memory gives- fleeting images of schooldays with Thenkinnam and Thayir saadham at 7.45 PM—and vacations in my village with hot afternoons glued to Radio Ceylon—Oh, why does one ever grow up?
Paadi paadi paarthen—what a spellbinding song it is—among my favourite SPB solos ever- evalo rasichu rasichu paadi irukkiraar- how his voice caresses, pouts, cajoles, sulks, smiles, yearns in turn in different lines-
Pon enbatho

Thiru Vadapalani Films’ Annaparavai-1980 starred Srikanth, Sudhakar, Latha & Radhika. Latha who was still acting as heroine at that time, did a surprise act by appearing as Radhika’s mother in the film. Music was by R Ramanujam. Other songs that became popular from the film were ‘Gopala yaen sir’ by MV & chorus and by SJ.

Raj- inikku officela naan senja thapukkellam you are solely responsible!

Saravanan, yes I remember Annaparavai. Did R.Ramanujam compose music for any other movie?

Music4ever, I am "cut-pasting" from what I wrote in the VJ chronolgy, while dwelling on the lovely VJ solo' Thamizh vendhan Pandiyanin angam' from Ananda Bhairavi-1978.

Rangasami Ramanujam is the younger brother of Rangasami Parthasarathy (of Oriental Records fame). Before settling in the U.S. and embarking on a flourishing business in marketing music, Parthasarathy had composed memorable music for films like Magadhalanaattu Mary, Kalyana Mandapam, Avan Piththana, Paalmanam and Kalyana Oorvalam.

Ramanujam was born the last of five children and grew in a household where music was loved and nurtured. Unfortunately, he could not be as successful as his illustrious brother. Ananda Bhairavi was his first film, and he gave a brilliant account of himself. His next film was Annapparavai-1980. Annapparavai had that
spellbinding SPB solo-‘Ponnenbatho poovenbatho’. MV’s ‘Gopala-yen sir’ became an instant hit. SJ’s ‘Aadi padhinettu’ was another catchy number.
Ramanujam’s next film was the MGC Sukumar- Vanithasri starrer Aval Oru Kavariman, which doesn’t seem to have been released. The film had some good songs like ‘Pallavai naan paada’(VJ) and ‘Poonthendral kaatraaga poonjolai vandaaga’(PS, Jolly Abraham?). Another stillborn film for which Ramanujam wasted his efforts
was Puththampudhunayagan. I have heard that in the aftermath of MGR’s demise, Ramanujam brought out a cassette on the Puratchi Thalaivar, which did brisk business. Ramanujam has several devotional albums to his credit.

All the songs in Ananda Bhairavi are truly memorable- ‘Umayavaley Mariyamma, varam tharuvaai Mariyamma’ in the great S Varalakshmi’s brigha-laden tenor is an aural treat. And while ‘Sirithaai- andha sirippil oru mogam’ is an all-time favourite SPB-PS delight, ‘Kodi kodi ennam adhu kondu vandha sondham’ is a breezy TMS-PS duet.

‘Janakan pon maanae’ is from Pennin Vaazhkkai, not Oru Pennin Kathai.

‘Moham vandhu mutham ketkkum raathiri’ is definitely a JC-PS duet. I think it is from Perumai, not Nermai.

Moham ennum ragam paadum is from Ezhaikkum Kaalam Varum. Not sure abt. the MD, perhaps V Kumar.

Poonkodiyae Poonkodiyae is a great SPB-SJ duet from School Master.

Megamae thoodhaaga vaa is a lovely SPB-PS duet from Kannan Oru Kaikkuzhandhai

Saravanan....I am hoping that u did a decent job at the office today........:-)And thanks to you and Rebby for that lyrics and the class write up on Ramanujam.

BTW I had the very same memories particularly on Radio Ceylon. Right from 7:00 AM it used to be a treat, starting with Pongum Poompunal....Saravanan gnabakam irukka????? Some of the fantasic morning songs included Saptaswaram Punnagaiyil Kandaen(SPB/VJ from Nadagame Ulagam), Vaa Ponmayile(SPB from Poondalir)....the list is endless. I have associated morning with these songs!!!!! One more song which I had previously posted on this thread but couldnt get the film name was the classic
Engey Unnai Kandaal Looda Nenjil kondattam(SPB/SJ)....Konjam film name sollunga.Would luv to hear this song ....:-(

Some of the KJY songs which I have permenantly associated with Ceylon Radio are:

Gangai Nadhi Oram Raman Nadandaan(KJY/VJ Film??)&

Eriyile Oru Kashmir Roja

There used to be the fantasic Sunday Spl programs...peru marandupochu..compered by K S Rajah... a top ten song list...I still remember the Sippi Irukkudu song being No 1 for weeks no end!!!!!!

I am now lost in that mist of time.......and as u put it right why at all did we grow up????????There now I hear the faint strain of SJ and malaysia singing..

Nadagame ulagam! Ah, memories! This was the 1st film I saw, dragged along with a bunch of protesting kids to see the hulk of K R Vijaya doing serious damage to our car's hood (one of our cars had gone 'shooting' to Ooty, and to go in the same car to the theatre was someone's warped notion of social status) in a dance sequence. Just for a nanosecond appearance of our crusty white ambassador..

As you can see, my initiation into the world of cinema was anything but memorable. Worse was to follow - 'aattukkara alamelu', 'varuvan vadivelan', 'annan oru koyil', 'benz vasu'... Sensing all this was turning me senile and movie-phobic and that I deserved a better introduction to cinema, my uncle took me to see 'Elippathayam' on a 1st day show at Quilon that had me sprinting at the sight of him for several months since.

Sorry folks for the intrusive digression, you're doing a wonderful job bringing back some cherished memories... keep it flowing..

Naaz,

1. Is it not "parangi pazham pazhutha pazham" or the order you mentioned? anyway aedhO oru pazham :-)... Naaz, I think the dance was by Jayamalini Or is it "Nilavu neram..."? Thalai mudi narachu pochu Naaz :-((

Though am mad after PS's voice, I literally hate this song... not just too much double meaning song, it did not come out well for me to say WoW :-(

2. "Anbu Megame": A small note on this. Engamma Sabadham came out when Jayachitra was at peak and she was lovely in the song seq. In her very early "malarum ninaivugaL" of Madras DD, she chose this song highlighting that it was one of the early bird songs to promote "slow motion" techniques of film gimmicks. She and Sivakumar formed a lovely pair, I believe. Fyi, yesterday "AlaigaL", a popular mega serial in Sun TV got over with "subam". JC was in one of the main roles as "Savithriamma". She still maintains good acting talents with expressions but amamamamamaaa her figure... Thaanga mudiyalada saaami (in Koundamani's language) :-))

3. In Pallandu vazhga, for the same heroine Latha, 3 different singers sang PS, VJ and TKK, but KJY was retained for MGR in all the duets, if am correct.

The film is Anbukku Naan Adimai, with Rathi performing some roadside show to distract the crowd from Ranjnikanth's insane plots. In the same film, there was another PS song:
"Ondrodu Ondranom Anbodu...Kondadumum Inbangal Nenjodu..." Do you recall this one?

Pallandu Vazhga was a slightly cheapened remake of Do Aankhen Baarah Haath. Usual MGR, Neraiyya Latha :-)

Wasn't ILU Sujatha from Vidhi? Mohan / Poornima and Sujatha? Music was SG, I think? Or am I confusing it with some other film?

Imayam Kandaen was BSS, I am pretty certain. Mayagugiral is VB, you're right.

Oldposts

Naaz, Surya is correct. "sujatha.. ILU" is from Kotteswaran magaL. I think the music was by Chakravarthi (famous telugu MD). Cast was Sivakumar and ShankarabaraNam Rajalakshmi along with Sowcar and Thengai forming a suspicious pair leading to lots of comic scenes. The film had another duet by SPB and PS besides "Sujatha..". In SPB+SPB voices, there was one more "unai naan ariven enai nee arivai..." a lovely duet.

Thanks for clearing my doubt, Subbu. I think I confused it with some song in Vidhi which I vaguely remember....It had a similar "I love you" aspect perhaps? I remember the phrase written in BOLD letter on the beach and Mohan and Poornima dancing around it...adhanale than kozhappam-nnu nenaikiraen.

Looking back on Surya's post, I am sure she is right about Kodiswaran Magal. Did this film come right after "Sujatha" (Nee Varuvai Ena...) which also had Rajalakshmi? Everything seems familiar and vague at the same time :-)

Naaz,

In my release-list (hope this is correct), "Koteeswaran magaL" under 1981, "Sujatha" under 1980, whereas "Vidhi" is under the year 1984 !!!!

Naaz,

Day-before yesterday, I listened to the song from Savithri (1980), a Menaka-Somayajulu's brother starrer. It was non other than "Vazhdhaal unnodu vaazhndirupen endru vanam pugundhaaL seethai" sung by VJ.
Such a great song with superb punches. Few examples:
- aazh kadal aanaalum aayiram aanalum avar avar vidhi padi ye
- InbamO thunbamo veLiyinil illai.. idhyathil uruvaagidum (correct words???)
- Mangalam kuraiyaamal manjaLum azhiyaamal vazhvadhu nalam-allvaa (excellent extension of laya by VJ...)
- maNa vinai naaL (wedding day !!!) andru vediyar palar sollum mandiram adhu allavaa...

Though Savithri had to marry an old man, who can never be match & in sync with her beauty, youthfulness etc etc, she says "I have to live with what I am", that too without any crib and whoel-heartedly.. I guess Vaali wrote the lyrics.

Sathiyamaaga solgiren... I just became emotional when I was listioning to this... Lyrics, Music (very simple by MSV), Rendering with such an involvement and the song seq with Menaka's simple actions are the culprits to make my eyes wet :-)

I should have posted this in VJ thread... but good things can be said anywhere... :-)

Vazhndhaal Unnodu is a beautiful song. Simple and sublime at the same time. MSV and VJ also gave us "Naan Padikkonde Iruppaen" (first version) which was along similar lines. Meaningful lyrics and expressive singing. Thanks for reminding me!

I have a bit different opinion on "naan paadi konde iruppen" and "Vazhndhaal unnodu".

The "Sirai" song, was in very good of the heroine Lakshmi and she has been enjoying every day in her life with her partner Prasanna.

Whereas Menaka (Savithri) was so unlucky to get married to an old man with whom... what kind of life she can enjoy? But she still accepts that life and this song comes out with a bit virakthi but somehow accept and live upto her commitment.

If you again listen to the Savithri song, you will see the difference. And we are so fortunate to listen to that kind of portray of expressions in that song.

I agree wtih you. The situations in both films were entirely different as you point out.
I was only pointing out "expressive" singing in both the solos. Vazhndhal and Naan Padikkonde are both meaningful songs, with minimal orchestration, and both depend on the singer to "emote". It was this "emotion" in the rendition which I was emphasising. Not the film or the situation.
Yes, MSV-VJ team gave us many good solos and memorable songs. I can add my voice to the "fortunate" chorus - we are lucky to have been TFM listeners during the best period!

Thanks for the details.
Sridevi Varam Kaetkiral is a beautiful Three-et, and the singers all leave their own special impression.
Nalamo Ena Naan Kaetpaen is, in my books, one of TRs challenging compositions (in scale, lyrics and singing too it is excellent.) I've always had a softspot for some TR tunes, and this is one of them.
I did not know that Kandaen Kalayan Penn Pondra was from Mayor Meenatchi. I remember Thirumurugan Aruginile Vallikkuraththi, but for some reason I did not associate this song as being from MM.
It is another good duet.
Somehow, a host of KRV films in the late70s/early 80s had good songs - Annapurani, MM, Nadagame Ulagam, Rowdy Rakkamma, Annapparavai, Neelamalargal...
Thanks for sharing.

Anyway let me try the lyrics. It is a female solo, probably SJ and came during early 80s. The song starts like this..

Thaenoorudhu Aasaiyo Nooridhu (or vooridhu)

Naaney pudhu roja..

The song vasantha kAla nathikaLilE doesn't end with MSV part.

Rajni sings:

maNa vinaikaL yArudanO
maayavanin vithi vakaikal
vithi vakaiyai mudivu seyyum
vasantha kaala neeralaikaL!

Finally the song ends with Sridevi (after getting married to Rajni's father - Calcutta Viswanathan) singing these lines:

neeralaiyil nadanthathellaam
nenjiraNdin ninaivalaikaL
ninavalaikaL mudintha idam
thaay maganaam soozhnilaikaL!

What en end to this song! Now the song and the story are complete.
Nowadays we miss such situation songs with lyrics aptly written for the story.
Yesterday I was seeing the movie 'Kasethan kadavulada". The whole month I was seeing new DVDs like Album, Dhool, Lesa lesa, Maunam pesiyathe....like that. After these bunch of new movies Kasethan kadavulada with natural performances by Manorama, Muthuraman and Thengay was a welcoming change.
Vaali has written a very good comedy song jambulingamE jadAtharA (Kovai S.Rajan, Veeramani and Tharapuram sunderrajan) very aptly written for the situation. it is really difficult to write such comedy songs.

I found it in a recording shop, the record had actor Rahman's photo on the cover, and the movie was titled as Nianivo Oru Paravai (perhaps unreleased)- Music was credited to Amaldev.

RR -

As far as MGR films are concerned, I think he was (in music sense and the ability to spot a good tune) up there with Raj Kapoor in HFM. I would find it equally difficult to choose between songs in (most) RK films.
And the MSV-MGR combination was a sterling example of immpeccable music chemistry. Virallum Veenaiyum Pola.
Is there a link to Piranda Idam Thedi? I have not heard it so many years! But I don't recall the PS-MSV song (I am sure I would if I heard the first line again.) These are the unfortunate breaks in my memory, doubly compounded by the complete absence of Vividh Bharati in the geography where I now make my home. My presence in this thread is primarily to keep the little that I know of TFM from that era from slipping away...They say that writing things down keeps one's memory working. And I think it does :-)

Naaz: I am not aware of a link to Piranda Idam Thedi. I found the combination of band music and Nadaswaram in the prelude and interlude appealing.
In fact, i bought the Naan Aanaiittal casette just for this song and to my disappointment found the quality to be mediocre. There was even a cut
in the song. when I asked the shop owner about the authenticity, he said that most of the old
recordings of HMV was destroyed in a fire accident and in fact, in the casette HMV had acknowledged someone for providing a copy. The same fate for one of the songs in Oli Vilakku.
as well as for many songs in Kalangarai Vilakkam.
Anyway, see if the following lines can help you recall the 'Kodukka' song:
Kodukka Kodukka Inbam Pirakkudey,
Adai Thadukka thadukka Vetkam...,
Ninaikka Ninaikka Nenjam Inithadey,...
I do not recall the words exactly but this is part of the pallavi. MSV provides only the humming.

RR- What about 'Megangal thirandu vandhaal' song- amazing lyrics by Alangudi Somu, and sung so feelingly by Seergazhi Govindarajan & PS- if I were to select the best from Naan Aanai Itaal- this song would be my choice! Pirandha idam thedi would be a close second though!

These four short verses by T.V.Rathnam in arangEtram uploaded for you.

Some more details will help others also to enjoy these.
kallArkkum kaRRavarkkum
http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62429 (http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62429
)
This is part of the title music.
Pramila's younger sister sings this traditional Thiruvarutpaa by Ramalinga adikaL in the temple.
The audio track in the DVD jumps over 2 lines.

akara muthala
http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62432 (http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62432
)
S.V.Subbiah asks her to sing. "manasu kashtamaa irukkumpOthu pAduviyE. oru pAsuram pAdummA"
seems like the last 2 lines of Arunagirinathar's Thiruppukazh.

pAviyEn kaNda vaNNam
http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62435 (http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62435
)
When Pramila comes home from Hyderabad for Jayasuda's wedding, the whole house is brimming with joy and happiness; she is the one who lost her innocenseand happiness; now deeply immersed in guilt and sorrow. Her sister is studying alone in a room. Pramila is watching over a picture of Lord Shiva, she asks her sister to sing a paasuram."appA manasu kashtamA irukkumpOthellam pada solvArE; ippO oru pasuram pAduviyA?"
That's Pramila's sobbing in the background. When she is singing Pramila just breaks down lying in her lap.

sri mAthA sri mahAyAnjE - slokam
http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62437 (http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=62437
)
When the truth about Pramila's profession is blown out, Kamal pushes and throws her out of the house. Senthamarai (Sivakumar's father) comes to her rescue and picks up a fight with Kamal. The younger sister to calm things down, sings this slokam in front of Devi's picture with Pramila and Senthamarai leaving in the background. The camera moves on and captures everyone's emotions.

When seeing this movie you can feel the essence of these verses. so emotionally packed in different situations.

very well sung by T.V.Rathnam. (I can't imagine it is the same TVR who sang "aaLai aaLai paarkkiRaar " in Raththak kanneer.)
Kudos to KB and V.Kumar!

Sathya Kabali,

Thank you for these couplets- My search of many years has ended at last- Thanks to you! I just listened to them right now--and reading your lucid descriptions-- kaatchigalum kann mun arangeruvathuppol irundhadhu! Thanks again for taking the time and trouble!

RR- sorry it should be 'Megangal irundu vandhaal'. In fact, the song starts with a stirring thogayara by the inimitable Seergazhi:

Odi vandhu meetpatharkku
unnmaikko kaalgal illai
Oindhirundhu kettppatharkku
neethikko neramillai
paartha nilai solvatharkku
Paramanukko uruvamillai
pazhi sumandhu selvathindri
ivanukko paathai illai--

Then the pallavi starts:

Megangal irundu vandhaal
adhai mazhaiyenakkolvathundu
manithargal thirundhi vandhaal
adhai pizhaiyena kolvathundo?

A moving song--and among my all-time favourites!

Naaz: Good choice of reminiscences again!

Saravanan: I will not contest your choice in Naan Aanaiyittaal. Probably teh least heard but the most moving piece. In fact, after seeing your posting yesterday I went back and listened to the song and came prepared with the four lines in
the "Thogaiyara" but you beat me to it. Also, thanks for reminding it is penned by Aalangudi Somu. He has also written Piranda Idam Thedi.
Is there a thread on Aalangudi Somu in TFM?
By the way, the song"Kodukka Kodukka" by PS is written apparently by V. lakshmanan. Have you heard of this lyricist? Other songs in Naan Aanaiyittaal: Nalla Velai Naan.., Thai Mel AAnai,
Naan Uyara Uyara...

RR: Vidwan V Lakshmanan is a famed astrologer who is more popularly known as 'Balajosiyar' Lakshmanan. He was a great friend of the late Manian, along with whom he produced MGR films like Idhaya Veenai & Pallaandu Vaazhga. He was also among those who were considered to be in MGR’s coterie.

He wrote lyrics for some good songs- The two songs sung by Panigrahi in Aval Yaar-1959: ‘Naan thedum pothu’ and ‘Kann kaanum minnal thaano’ were perhaps the first songs he wrote. He was the lyricist for all the songs in S Balachandar’s Bommai-1964.
‘Amma endraal paal tharuvaal’- Karpooram-1967, ‘Manam oru kurangu’ and ‘Aruppokkottai machchaan’- both Manam Oru Kurangu-also 1967 are other songs by V Lakshmanan that I recall.

Yes, Raj, that's a good song from Vaazhkkai (1949/ AVM/ T.R.Ramachandran & Vyjayanthimala). Sung by M.S.Rajeswari, Music by R.Sudarsanam. MSR had a smash hit in 'Un kann unnai yemaatrinaal' from the same film. Lyrics by K.P.Kamakshisundaram.

mana mevum aasai mohanaa maaraa ikkobam nyayamaa

Vaazhkkai was apparently filmed for the most part in my grandmother's house. I've heard her talk about Vaijayanthimala as the most beautiful girl she's ever seen.

A song that always puts me in a good mood is "nallavan enakku naanE nallavan". It has an excellent rhythm and good beats. Was it one of the "dance floor" songs of that time?

Another JC song, I believe, is the following:

UdhadugaLil unathu peyar ottikondathu
Adhai ucharikkum pothu nenjam thinthikkindrathu

Is this from Thanga Rangan? That was probably two score and more years ago.

Which movie is the following from? (words might be incorrect)

Sung by SPB and a female voice (?) I forget. Input from Saravanan would be appreciated.

Music4ever, thanks for reminding me of songs that I had not thought of in quite a while :)

Yes, 'Udhadugalil unadhu peyar' by JC & PS is from Thangarangan (1978/ Jeppiar Pictures). Lyrics by Na.Kamarasan. Music by MSV. The song featured Vijayakumar & Pramila, though Thengai played the title role. Jeppiar followed this up in 1979 with another Thengai film- Porter Ponnusami.

'Adi kannmani' is from Aval Oru Adhisayam (1978/ Suchitra Films). No idea about the actors. The song is sung by SPB & PS, with LR Anjali joining in briefly. Music by Vijayabhaskar.

Saravanan, thanks for your valuable input :) Thanga rangan also had "enga rangan, thanga rangan" as one more number. When you said Porter Ponnusami, I immediately remembered it was by MSV and there was a lively number or two too. I forget them though.

'Adi Kannmani' is a nice number by Vijayabhaskar (also MD for thappu thalangal, I believe).

There was this tune which I used to blare often to the great dismay of my close ones: "Oru rojapoo sirikiradhu, pudhu rajavai ninaikkiradhu". Was it by Chandrabose?

Thanks once again :)

Music4ever, ‘oru rosaappoo sirikkirathu’ is from Yaaga Saalai (1980/ Friends Movies). The song was sung by Vijayaramani (aka TS Ragavendar), Kamala & S.N.Surendar. Lyrics by Thirupaathoor Rasu. Music by Vijayaramani himself.

Samudra Rajakumari, Sugapushpa Sukumari...Is vintage MSV. I haven't heard the song in months, but if my memory serves me right (oh yeah?) there is a superb smooth-jazz interlude after the second charanam. The transition is both incongruous and integral at the same time! All done with the MSV finesse and authority. You have to give it a listen sometime.

Naaz, I only remember that captivating trademark mridangam that was so characteristic of many MSV songs. Haven't listened to Samudra Raajakumari in about twenty or so years!

Mythila, know of any other lilting Vijayabhaskar melodies? I only remember those of MSV's, for I was (and am still) an avid MSV fan and also an avid KVM fan (although I will readily acknowledge the genius of IR).

I was listening to SPB's 50th birthday celebrations which I believe happened sometime around 1997 or 1998 (my friend very kindly sent me his CD). In it, Gangai Amaran says he and IR played the guitar and some other instrument for GKV's super duper melody "ThEn sindhudE vaanam, unai enai thAlAttudhE".

Sivaji Productions' Aruvadai Naal- 1986 ( saw it after my 11th std. Half-yearly exams!)Directed by GM Kumar.

Stg. Prabhu, Ramkumar (Sivaji's elder son, he too acted!), Pallavi, Rasi, Vadivukkarasi, RP Viswam. The story is set in Ponmudi village, Prabhu in the role of Muthuvelu, Pallavi in the role of Nirmala (the christian doctor) and Rasi in the role of Rajalakshmi (Muthuvelu's muraipponnu) play the main roles.

Vengayam, when did aavani become maargazhi ? :))

Btw, hope you don't think I am being unpatriotic if I admit that I really relish the luscious Pakistani mangos that flood the UAE markets this time of the year!

To add to your list: What about 'Iru maanganippol idhazhoram( Vairam) and 'Mangai nee mangani' (Innisai Mazhai). Of course we don't like that song from Pratap, do we? ;)

Raghu, I too am trying to gather details of the film Pokkisham. All I know is it may be a film dubbed from Telugu, it had music by Satyam, and it had another good song 'Kalyanam thirukkalyanam' (PBS/PS).

Mythila, I second your Vijayabhaskar list- perhaps you could add 'Iravil irandu paravaigal' and 'Idho un kaathali' from Soundaryame Varuga Varuga, 'Ilamai naatiya saalai' from Kalyanammam Kalyanam and ' 'Mohana punnagai oorvalame' from Uravu Solla Oruvan.

Thanks Mythila, Saravanan, and Senty. You all (including Naaz and others) are able to introduce here all those golden songs of the seventies with great ease. Henceforth, I shall be content to read your valuable input, only surfacing with comments or views if some tune or other imposes itself upon me from time to time :) Believe me, it does. I think it was Mythila, who, a while ago, started discussing the song "Maragadha megam, mazhai sindhum, .... varum neram indhu; thirumagal vedham inge thirumaal padaithare ..." in this very thread. I forget the movie name. It was by MSV directing VJ and SPB(?). I guess I can retrace it from the archives.

M4e agosh.... did one great song in
kodieswaran called Tholaivinile.

the song that u r talking about is by S.A.Rajkumar

**cut and paste**
AGOSH - is a three person composer/band group,
much like shankar, ehsaan & loy.

AGOSH comprises of Anandh (guitarist), GOpal Rao(vocalist - nooru aandu ku oru murai pookkinra poo allava - under vidyasaagar, oh
love attack centrury podum love attach - under
a.r.rahman), SHaleen (drummer).

They also composed music, which was fairly successful for the hindi movie 'ZOR' and the
tamizh movie 'Harishchandra'

The song that still stands tall among other good ones:

Bharadhi kannamma
neeyE chinnamma
kELadi ponnamma
adhisaya malar mugam
dinasari pala ragam
aayinum ennamma
thEn mozhi sollamma
bharadhi kannamma
neeyE chinnamma

There was a time, though, when I preferred the (seemingly) more lively numbers like "yaadhum oorE yaavarum kELir", "namma ooru singari", and "EngEyum eppodhum sangeetham santhosham" etc.

Vintage MSV weaving his magical musical treat in that movie "NinaithalE inikkum". It proved nothing but plain bravado in the era that solely belonged to IR, though.

Mannikka maataya is from the movie Janani produced by Gemini(?) trying to make a comback. Nethaji directed this one with new faces. Saravanan, as usual, should be able to give more details.

Oldposts
17th February 2008, 12:54 PM
Surya, you're right. Janani- 1985 was an unsuccessful attempt from Gemini. The film starred newcomers Udayakumar & Bhavya. (Incidentally, there was great demand for the name Bhavya in 1985, the heroine of Geetanjali was also called Bhavya, and the Janani heroine ambitiously called herself Gemini Bhavya!!)

'Konjum malar manjam' (SPB/VJ), 'aadurathu endha'(SPB/SJ), 'mannikka maataaya' (KJY & PS versions ) and 'Naattu sarakkidhu' (MV/Saibaba) were the songs. Music: MSV. Lyrics by Netaji (I think)

Surya, add:

4. Anbu nadamaadum kalaikkoodame (this is the fantastic duet I am talking about, IR gave something like that in Anthapurathiloru Magarani for Sivaji. Super duets, both)

5. aatuvithaal yaaroruvar

Those days, what made these composers do original stuff is what I find amazing. Their belief in the strenght of the carnatic system versus today' composers belief in loops and foreign sounding Tamil. It is good as long as you can get a mix of classical tunes and modern sounds. Is it because our today's composers have no strong classical music grounding like MSV and KVM or is it because they think Indian classical music is not useful?

I remember one 'I love you' song by SPB & Chitra from Vedan- 1993. Is that the song you're referring to?

Vedan - directed by Suresh Krisna - SarathKumar & Kushboo which had a vairamuthu's kavithai-turned-a-song that goes like

..

Out of nowhere the following song imposed itself upon me! I think music is by MSV.

Anandam vilayAdum veedu
idhu Anandam vilayAdum veedu
Oru nool kondu uruvAna mAlai
...

The song was sung by Susila. Any idea what movie?

- Sandhippu (1983/ Sivaji Productions/ Vaali/ MSV)- shoddy remake of Amitabh's Naseeb.

Sandhippu! Yes, I remember this movie. Sara, can you also please list the other songs in this movie?

I vaguely recall a number that goes

NallorgaL nAttai kAkka
namakkAga nammai kAkka
Happy New Year

Sung by TMS, music by MSV. Was this in Sandhippu?

Thanks :)

Raghu, the song is 'mayil thogai asaindhaal' from Ragasia Police - 1995. MDs: Lakshmikant-Pyarelal.

'Nee varuvaai ena' is from Sujatha - 1980. MD: MSV. Kalyani Menon's version was equally good.
