Karisal Tharisal from Tajmahal
One of the most underrated song of ARR's. Superb orchestration esp in the first interlude. Hats of to ARR :notworthy:
Srikumar and Chitra did a superb job..Now that I've heard abt about Sriram (of Thaya Thaya fame), I'm kinda clueless about Srikumar. Has he sung any other song before?

M.G.Sreekumar has sung for ARR in these numbers

1.Nenechapadi - Kadhalar Dhinam
2.Dhandhiya - Kadhalar Dhinam
3.En Swasa Katre - En Swase Katre
4.Chinna Chinna Mazhai Thuligal - En Swasa Katrea
5.Karisal Tharisal - Taj Mahal
6.Nenjinile/Jiya Jale (Male Portion) - Uyire

i think there are others, but these were the most popular once

He also sang "Chinna Chinna Mazhai Thuligal" from En Swasa Kaatra..

M.G.Sreekumar is an award winning singer from Kerala..He has also sung a song in Yodha along with Dr.KJY

Which MSV number is this Dinesh?

Thanga Pathakathin Mele - Thedivandha Mappillai (1970)

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/tamil/s/actors.6377/

while some say its a copy, i dare to say its an adaption because ARR gave a new dimension to the tune. Not to say the tune was exactly the same, but the meter of both the songs more or less the same. :)

I don't think that they are that similar tune wise. This is pretty much like what they said about Sahana and IR's Ore Naal. The starting notes (and the raga) were the same in that case.

IMO, I really don't think MSV's number was Enna Villai Alagai's inspiration.

Has this been discussed before somewhere? I want to know what other people thought!

Jiya Jale from Dilse

This might be old news but just recently I came across an article whereby one of ARR's sound engineer, S. Sivakumar informed that there is a sound of anklet in Jiya Jale. In truth, the sound was not from an anklet but from Lata Mangeshkar's bangles that ARR had recorded.

After reading it, I was just so tempted to hear the song again. And true enough, there is the sound throughout the pallavi and saranam :D Interesting...

You don't get the same kind of intimacy with the song when you hear it through speakers. With headphones, you close your eyes and shut off from the rest of the world. Mann Chandre is just one of those songs to be experienced alone (for me anyway!). :D

IR albums has a thread called the raaja of erotica and I was wondering ARR's part in erotica.. Here it goes..

Raa kozhi rendu muzhichiruku - Jesudoss, Swarnalatha
Thanneerai kaadhalikum meengala illai - Sangeetha (?)
Rukumani Rukumani - SPB
Sugam Sugam (VCS) - SPB
Thanga Thaamarai magalae - SPB

Jodhaa Akbar

This album is perfection for me. I would place it very highly (if not at the top) of ARRs post-2000 works.

A British TV channel (Channel 4) recently aired this movie as part of their "Indian Winter" season. They also aired Rang De Basanti and Slumdog Millionaire. They introduced the movies as having a score by the Oscar winner A R Rahman!

I enjoyed watching JA more than RDB. The songs were utilised brilliantly.

Watching In Lamhon in the context of the movie gave me goosebumps. Beautiful picturisation. It also made me rediscover Man Mohana & Khwaja. ARRs spiritualism really perfuses into these songs. Hypnotic compositions.

The instrumental versions of Jashn-e-bahara and Khwaja just complete this album and make it a work of flawless perfection.

I may recommend "Zubeida" Songs which is on loop for long time and I want to write more but in simple words

Chodo mori Baiyyan - Richa Sharma (Heavily Classic!)
Dheeme Dheeme Gayo- Kavitha and Flute (Can't ask for more)
Albeli - Spanish Flamenco guitars intro Kavitha & Sukh
Pyaara Sa Gayon - Lata (Wat a song & Wat a story)
Hai Na arre arre....- Alka & Udit (Lovely Duet)
So Gaye Hain - Lata (ARR wife's Fav)

ARR said in an interview that a person approached him in the airport (NI) on transit and congratulated him for his songs and remarked that one of his album is outstanding and the best. ARR thought it was going to be Dil Se or Laagan and asked him, The aged man replied "Zubeida" ARR was pleasantly surprised and pleased!

Excellent song.. Great composition... Soothing voice & music.. Lovable lyrics.. And the chorus behind Rahman's voice.. amma thaai maargalaa.. yaara irundhaalum ungaluku engaloda NANRI HEIs

when I first listened to this song, in the first interlude, the keyboard beat reminded me off an old tamil serial.. I think its Mala Kala or something like that.. The saxs in the second interlude along with O'la of chorus lifts up the song

A great great feel good song ..

I have been listening to ARR's peppy numbers of the 90s (those with PD).
People often say that fast numbers sound good only during the initial period after the release, later the impact dies down.

But ARR songs (chikku bukku, Urvashi, Romeo etc) have the same impact on me everytime i listen to them, Urvasi gives me goosepimples even now.

Ennaaaa songs...

Two occasions to note on how well ARR knows the lyrics..

Sakkarai inikia sakkaaraa - SPB and Sujatha - SPB's voice is always refreshing and he is like "The curious case of SPB" .. the "hey hey"la was sooooo beautifully sung .. To go with their singing, we have Vaali's lyrics (?) for the situational song  and the usage of instruments to go with the lyrics are well utilized in this song.. just before Sujatha goes "kitta vandhu thattunu kekkaadhaiya thavilu" there is a thavil beat and I was wondering why suddenly we have thavil nu..

One more is the infamous kumba kOnam sandhaiyila.. goiyaalae.. Nithyasree kulla ippadi oru erotic voice irukardha inniki thaan car stereola kettaen.. nice balance with Manicka Vinayagam.. :notworthy: .. Kumba konam was a special song for the obvious reasons when the album was released but was later disappointed that it didnt feature..

But for other reasons as well.. ARR didnt go to his aasthaana erotic voice of Vasunthara but then went to Nithyashree.. This was a big shock for all of us and even some media thrashed Nithyashree for singing this song... Manicka Vinayagam was another surprise to this as well. But the high pitch voice of Nithyashree and the strong bass voice of Manickam gave huge credits for the success of the song.. Just listen to the strong scent that she adds to the song in these lines..

Ellaya rombavum thaanduriyae
Kaal kai summa nikkaathaa - nik kath tha - this is how she sings and it just kaamabaanam nu solluvaangalae adhu vandhu paayum kaadhilae

Rahman was equally targetting on the lyrics to add the best instruments for the song.. I was listening to Marghazhi poove just minutes before and a white folk who works with me heard the song as said it sounds cool. I said its from the same composer who won the Academy awards last year.

Margazhi Poove is my all time favorite song. Its music was ahead of its time, when the movie was released in 1994...No one would have heard those ambient sounds in TFM at that time..Wow...Those "enigmatic" beats and synth pads...Wow...

Give him the CDs of Roja,TT,MM,Iruvar, Rangeela and Duet also :D
Ejjatly. Especially when u listen to the female chorus between first and second stanzas, u can see two distinct threads with different pitches seamlessly integrated to make it a blissful experience.

Roshan,

Pachai nirame is an artistic brilliance, a rare breed for its genre to die for eh' to live and love for.. The idea of ascribing varnam's to love (kaadhalil (..3) niram undu) and the visual transformation is like chasing rainbows. Totally outstripping thoughts from the combo to have a male solo in this fashion . A very simple, gorgeously self-coloured tune and the lyrical beauty never fades out of my memory. Hariharan is equally appealing, vivid and an enhancing artist to limning these varnam's. Like Manjal.. Manjal... my fav part is the beauty of black tune/lyrically illustrated in a feministic positivism unlike red "iravin nirame... iravin nirame" see the modulation of the same words and "ooho.." filler is celestial.

I was doing my PG in Sivakasi when this audio got released. I had to come down to Madurai and buy the cd. So carried the discman along with me to Madurai as I didn't want to waste any time in the travel. Those are golden days..

The songs that very instantly caught my attention were Asathura, Sandhippoma, Yedho.. There is something about 'Asathura' song. Most Rahmaniacs don't like it but it is an all time favourite of mine. The lyrics could'Ve been much better is my only complaint abt this album.

I like her voice too. She was good in Tharai Erangiya (Eeram), though her voice was heavily modified.

Okey, the reason I asked is she is renowned for kuthu songs only. Simbu padangalla at least one song and B grade movies la vara songs than avanga neriya padinathu.

That's probably the curse of TF. Typecasting. I'm not saying she is a great singer, but she sure does well. One of the few female singers who sings with full of energy. I'm sure ARR would make her sing in a different way.

Thendralae from Kaadhal Desam.

During those initial days, I used to skip this song in the audio cassette and cursed ARR for composing a slow paced song amidst the peppy Hello doctor, Kalloori Salai, etc. But now this song is right up there among my bedtime favourites.. Classic stuff..

Mano for me.. for some reasons, I thought Unni struggled a bit with his rendition.. maybe becoz of the tough lyrics with lot of nedil's resulting in high pitch singing..

Mano on the other hand was soothing as ever.. and when he starts Maalai vaanil kadhirum saaiyum - It was like seeing inaindha kaigal intermission bit, where when Ramki was going down the hill, Arun Pandiyan comes in for rescue and at the end they are all equal..

Nevertheless an excellent song for a less deserved Abbas, Vineeth and Tabu to some extent.

Nice. But I dont think UK struggled.

The last song listened in a loop - KandukondEn KandukoNdEn kaadhal mugam kandukoNDEn. Surely one of the most impressive compositions of ARR, one of the best rendtions of Hariharan and one of the most beautiful works of Vairamuthu.

Aweeeeeeeeeeeesome song !!

I think somehow the choice is compromised (NOM to Kathik he is awesome as usual) But ARR should have sung any of those versions. I preferred Hindi!
