Song: kaaviri nagarinil
Movie: vaazhndhu kaatugiren
Singer : PSuseela
Lyrics: kaNNadasan?
MD: MSViswanathan
Year : 1975

This is the song of a woman who doesnt take rejection very well. She takes an extreme step when her own husband gives more importance to his mistress than her. The last 2 lines

varuvadhu varattum naanum peN thaan
vaaznthE kaattugiREn ... en vaazkkaiyai iRaivan kaakkavillaiyenRaal
kOvilaip pUttugiREn ... kOvilaip pUttugiREn

Pretty much sums up the extremity of the character.

But the song and the lines were wasted in an absurd film. (discussion on the film here
http://forumhub.mayyam.com/hub/viewtopic.php?p=191296#191296)

Thanks to JN for the song and lyrics.

The VJ version of the song is an equally good one. Very rarely we have 2 versions of the song sung by 2 different singers of the same gender.(SARakjumar songs are exceptions :)) PS does a commanding job and as always she gets all the expressions right.

Ramki, Thanks for the song.

But for the songs and good performance by Sujatha, this film was a typical c-class movie. Wife becomes dhAsi for husband. Not to elaborate on this story line :angry2:

PS version is full of emotions that too with anger. Through that Varuvadhu varattu, heroine give a fitting challenge to her husband. PS did her best to convey this

Song: vasanthangaL varum munne
Movie: Lalitha
Singer : PSuseela
Lyrics: vaali?
MD: MSViswanathan
Year : 1976

'kora kaagaz' is one of my favorite hindi film and 'mera jeevan kora kaagaz' is one of my favorite hindi songs. Kishore kumar rightfully received the national award for the excellent rendition.

When KK was remade in tamil , MSV used just the initial music of the hindi original and came out with a totally new tune(todays pick).

You can listen to the original here

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/hindi_bollywood/s/movie_name.1177/

Todays pick is noteworthy just for PSuseela's voice. MSV jumps from saranam to saranam instead of the usual format of touching pallavi in between the saranams.
Well written Lyrics by the lyricist(I heard its by vaali)

Nalla Song

"Mera Jeevan Kora Kogaz" was a great song in all respect. I remember Ameen Sayani once commenting that the song topped Binaca Geet Mala for the year 1974 and grapped National award for KK. Rare feat indeed. KA at his best. Hindi Songs when they were at their best! (as a kid used to watch with awe when my uncles/aunts and elder siblings discuss the songs awake the whole night). I was force to listen the songs of their choice, youngest kid issues! However as I grew up and had my own choice IR became my savior. 76 thru 79 was good with Chithchor, Akhiyon Ke and mere Naina. 80s after EDKL and Kudrat, touted Rakesh Roshan's so-so asongs like 'Dushman Kare Dost..", "tum sung Preet" asd greatest hit. what a low! Surprise! Surprise! The low was yet to come. 80-s, 90-s only slipped further. There were/are occasional gems, hope they are cherished forever

MSV as always does a great job in coming with original tunes as much as possible in remake.

Thanks Ramki

Kaaviri nagarinil is a song with differnt emotions. Starts with slight naiyandi, then mixing with caution, then goes to veruppu and finally anger with challenge. SuperO super. That silence before varuvadhu varattum naanum pen dhaan is fabulous. The immediate takeoff by PS is the succes factor for this song.

Lalitha song is so so slow song. Is it bakground song? I heard Gemini ganesh paired with Sujatha. Gorampa

During the one tv channel, vayalum vazhvum days, hindi songs were my refuge.
vividh bharathis 'faui bhaiyon' and 'aap ki pharmaish' etc introduced me to the goldies of HFM.

Song: neraagave ketkiren
Movie: nenjil oru muL
Singers : Vani Jairam, Deepan chakravarthy
Lyrics: ?
MD: GKVenkatesh
Year : 1981

Couple of weeks back i was humming the kannada version of todays pick.(http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/kannada/s/movie_name.2978/)
Its a beautiful duet by PBS and SJ and a very very popular number.
I then remembered the tamil version, which unfortunately did not become as popular as the original.
When i asked NeelD about this song , he was not sure if he had it but promised to look into his collections. He did and found it. He took great pains to convert the song from his cassette and clean it up for us. Thanks Neel.

'nenjil oru muL' is tamil remake of 'kati pathang'(Rajesh khanna, asha parekh). Prathap pothen and Poornima Jairam did the lead roles. I did watch the original in which asha assumes the identity of a widow and lands in rajesh khannas house who could be a potential member of AA. (I can understand why the director of tamil version wanted Prathap for that role :) ). The film had excellent songs by RDBurman.
Poornima Jairam made her tamil debut in kiLinjalkal(released in the same year). NOM will be her second film in Tamil.
GKV did not bother much in creating new tunes for the film. He used some of his popular kannada numbers.
'raagam pudhu raagam'(DC,SPS) is another (or the only) popular number from NOM.

Ramki / Neel D -

Naeraagavae Sollgiraen....Abaaram!
"Idhazhodu Reengaaram...Idhamaana Sangeetham" Sums it up!

This duet is elixir- made even more sweeter and priceless by the authenticity of the singing voices - the two supreme (tamil) talents of VJ and DC. VJ's work on a simple word like "Naan" (second charanam) is a touchstone for what true singing is all about..."Or Aayiram Vaarththaigal Vaendumo, Innumae?" Touche!
But the film? Kati Patang = Good Yarn. Nenjil Oru Mul = All Yawn.

Duets like these are POTWs mainstay! Keep them coming!

Song: neram iravu neram
Movie: ponnukku thanga manasu
Singer : LREswari
Lyrics: kaNNadasan
MD: GKVenkatesh
Year : 1973

I'm not a fan of LRE's 'club' songs. But as with all likes and dislikes there are exceptions and this song is one of them. The song has a melodious pallavi and has some interesting jazzy interludes.
LRE tries to be less LRE-ish..you know what i mean :).

I remember watching PTM in a pre color television days at my aunts house. We did not own a television then. The film had Jaichitra, vidhubala, sivakumar and Vijaykumar(first film?).
The film is just memorable for the evergreen duet 'then sindhudhe vaanam'.

Thanks Ramki. nEram iravu nEram is one of my favorite LRE songs. Has been a long time since I listened to it. LRE's amazing talent went underutilized in the music scene that she was in. But still some wonderful compositions came her way once in a while. Very few singers were able to realize their complete potential in film music industry. LRE is not one of them.

Song: vethala kiLiye solladhe veLiye
Movie: deiva thirumanangaL
Singer : SJanaki
Lyrics: kaNNadasan
MD: GKVenkatesh
Year : 1981

SJanaki should have been GKV's favorite female singer. Most of his albums had atleast one song by her. Look at his kannada listings.

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/kannada/m/music_director.751/

Her name appears in alternate albums.

'Deiva thirumangaL' had 3 Mds. KVM,MSV and GKV. When i hosted SJ-MSV combo, i almost featured this song. Madhu corrected me and pointed out 'vaLLi thirumanam' part of DT had music by GKV.
The song , picturised on cute sridevi, used to air frequently during the 80s. SJ's voice is a perfect match for sridevi. No wonder every MD who worked for a sridevi movie opted SJ for the songs.
Another solo by SJ in DT is 'kandhan vandhaan kandhan vandhaan vaLLi malaiyile' .

The audio quality is not good. As naaz pointed something should be done to digitize such rare songs. These songs are treasures and there should be a song library or something to preserve these digitally.

Ramki, excellent song of LRE. I guess it was for Vidubala (D/o. Magic expert Bagyanath). Pretty good looking and ok in acting. This song and Mayyakm thAn pEsiyadhO (edhirkAlam) sounds similar in some places.

In ThabalkAram Thangai also, there is a beautiful solo of LRE. Any idea about it?

Ramki, the masterpiece in Deiva ThirumaNangaL is "thirumAlE seerArum maNivaNNA" by VJ for Latha. A-Class song. Also another female solo by PS for Sripriya "vAnamum bhoomiyum Alingnam". Do you have these two?

Song: maanikka maamani / aandavan potta
Movie: thennankeetru
Singers : SPB, Vani Jairam/KJYesudoss
Lyrics: kaNNadasan ?
MD: GKVenkatesh
Year : 1975

I will always remember 'maanikka maamani' for the dramatic score at the end of the song. I always wonder what could have happen to the couple happily singing about their future. Maybe nothing. I have not seen the film which had Sujatha and Vijaykumar. This jodi *ed in handful of films together and my fav is oodhappu kaNsimittugiradhu.
Coming back to thennankeetru, the KJY solo is a rare one(I think). It has 'bollywood' touch but i like the way the charanams sandhams are constructed.
Does anyone have more details on this film? Indian cinema database says the film was directed by kovi Manisegaran(writer?)

Song: poove unnai kattikkondu
Movie: avan
Singers : SPB, Uma Ramanan
Lyrics: vairamuthu? ?
MD: Shankar Ganesh
Year : 1985

I always wonder how does heroes like arjun can survive as lead actors for more than 25 years. Other than a muscle toned body he has nothing else to be acknowledged as a hero. But i was reading the Box office analysis which says that his latest 'vadhiyar' is doing good business in B&C centres. I think tamilians(most of them :) ) are suckers for action heroes. We accept any crap in the name of action movies.

In 'avan' he was paired with iLavarasi. I think the film was directed by chozha rajan, who directed some mediocre thrillers in the mid 80s.
Todays pick has a hummable tune and the interludes reminds me of hindi songs. SPB-UR pair has not sung many songs together. This is could be one of their 10 songs together.

I was wondering if there are any songs for karthgiai deepam festival. None came to my mind but i then rememebered NeelD sending me shankari songs when i hosted 'bharathikku oru kannamma' from same film

Song: ezhudhadha paadal ondru
Movie: then sindhudhe vaanam
Singers : TMS, Swarna
Lyrics: Vaali
MD: VKumar
Year : 1975

This is one another film with kamalhassan playing second fiddle to Sivakumar. I remember reading that SK and KH did not get along very well and both vowed not to act with each other.

'then sindhudhe vaanam' had KH, SK, jaichitra and a new face?. I did watch this film but do not remember much. The only scene i remember is 'unnidam mayangugiren' song sequence.

Todays song is picturised on KH and the new(or old) face.

TMS voice can suit for only selected actors and KH is not one of them. TMS voice was showing its age and the skinny KH looked way too young to have such a matured voice.

But the song is a catchy one. The second portion of charanam that starts with 'madal vaazhai' and the remaining sounds very close to same portion of 'ilangaiyin iLamkuyil' song. I believe Pilot premnath came after TSV.

Ramki: aduthathu is a nice song, but the same style of pallavi with dangutakku interludes, gets repeated; should not have been from the great VK. PS as usaul sounds very clear in her words and voice and best suited for Saritha.

Ezhidhadha paadal is for Kamal and Late RaNiChandra (Badrakali fame). I read that RC acted in this movie fully along with BadrakaLi. But in BK, the climax scenes were yet to be shot as she was killed in air crash. So, they went for a dupe actress. One can make out very easily that RC was missing in the climax scenes.

TSV is very nice movie, recently I saw in CD. It seems it ran full-house all 3 weeks but due to release of a MGR movie, this was taken off from Devi Paradise.

JC becoming vedigundu that time itself, it was obvious. But she over shadowed all by her acting including Sivakumar, KH and RC. Iyarkai ezhil konjugindra is a very breezy solo by PS in this film besides the all-time hit Unnidam mayangugirEn (KJY).

In this duet, Swarna is totally a mis-fit, never gelling well with TMS and in turn TMS does not suit Kamal.

Song: maathavamen maadhavane
Movie: raja rishi
Singers : SJanaki, Malaysia Vasudevan
Lyrics: PulamaiPithan
MD: iLaiyaraja
Year : 1985

Rajarishi is a good comedy film and todays song sequence is the most hilarious scene of the lot. No Im not kidding.
The song sequence is for Menakai mayakkufying Viswamithrar.

When chosing the actor for menaka the director(shankar?) might have imagined the following scenario.

DevargaL: 'mannaa..boologothil viswamithrar meendum aazhndha thavakolathil irukkiraar.
adhai kalaikka muyarchi edungaL'

indhiran: 'nalladhu oorvasi rambai menaka ambika radha anuradha discoshanthi
yaaraiyavadhu anuppi mayakka sollungaL'

devargaL : 'muyarchi seidhom aanaal avargaLin callsheet kidaikkavillai'

indhiran(manadhirkkuL): viswamithrar kaanju poi kidakaar yaarai anupicha enne.
devaragaLidam ' sari indha oorvasi ramba menaka aishwarya ivangaLoda amma yaaravadhu irundhaal
anuppi vaiyungaL'

devargaL 'avargaL yaarukkum nadanam theriyaadhe mannaa'

indhiran: adhanaala ennaiyaa. kaNNai mooditirkkira munivarkku break dancennu theriyuma
twist dancennu theriyumaa .chumma poi kai kaalai aattittu varattum.

Based on this wild imagination the director should have chosen actress Lakshmi for the apsaras role.
We were then treated(or punished) to watch a aged, bloated (talented) lakshmi shaking her arms and legs
and hip(whatever left of it) to this good composition by IR.
What was more torturing was the 'seductive' poses Lakshmi was asked to make throughout the song
udhattai kadithal vazhithal, imai padapadathal, oru madhiri paarthal..kodumai. Even normal man will become
a thuravi after witnessing her 'actions' :)
If you find this funny wait till the climax of the song.
Sivaji, freshly enticed by Lakshi, will wake from his penance and will try to embrace her.
But their thoppais will prevent it happening and finally(after several takes)
they will manage a clumsy hug. This scene is not for weak hearted

Try listening to the song without visualising anything i said above :)
It has some good singing by SJ, neat lyrics by PP(The song has resemblance to 'poongaatre theendathe'(kunguma chimizh)

"ezuthAtha pAdal" is a lovely song. It belongs in a Sivaji or MGR film. At least Muthuraman, Gemini Ganesh, Vijayakumar. Someone who had a better screen presence than young Kamalahaasan. Regardless of the actor, a score requires singers who can best execute it. TMS fits perfectly. K.Swarna is better suited for songs like "ennOdu ennennavO". She struggles to keep up with TMS. Any of the four leading ladies of the time would have done full justice to the song.

The song in which SJ / Lakshmi chemistry works well is Vasantha Kaala Kolangal (Thiyaagam) This is a bit of a coincidence, but just two days ago I was thinking of another SJ / L song: "Naanum Neeyum Saerndhu, Ezhil Vaanam Pola Vazhndhu..." (Thandikkapatta Niyaayangal?) A Shankar-Ganesh original!

Song: kuyilosaiyai vellum
Movie: mannippu
Singers : PSuseela, APKomala
Lyrics: Vaali
MD: SMSubbaiyah Naidu
Year : 1969

While filming one of the scenes in mannippu, Actress venniradai nirmala met with a freak accident that left her scarred forever.
One crucial scene in mannippu was AVMRajan trying to molest VN.
Her character tries to escape from him but hits her head on a wooden table and dies.
During the scene, the director wanted VN to keep her eyes open(after her character dies). He then made AVMR sprinkle water into her face. One of the water drop hit her with great force. She felt immense pain but the scene took few takes to complete. By the time the scene was successfully completed her eye was totally swollen. She was rushed to hospital but the doctor couldnt do much. Though the pain subsided, she lost the ability to blink her eye.
VN mentioned this in her malarum ninaivugaL.

'Mannippu' also had Jaishankar and lakshmi. AVMR and Lakshmi played sibilings and VN played lakshmis pattu teacher(todays song is for them).
SMS tuned some good songs for Mannippu. Todays pick is the least popular of the three(i know). The other 2 popular numbers are
'nee enge en ninaivugaL'(TMS/PS) and
'vennilaa vaaanil'(TMS,PS).

Song: muthu mani kaNNanukku
Movie: sudarum sooravaLiyum
Singer : SJanaki
Lyrics: kaNNadasan
MD: MSViswanathan
Year : 1971

Those lovely old 'DD only channel' sundays. You watch the munnottam to catch the title of next week's film. You see name like 'sudarum sooravaLiyum' and go 'oh crap'.

Well the film was anything but crap. It was a compelling tale of trust , love and betrayal. The film had
Gemini ganesh, Muthuraman, venniradai nirmala, Jaya , soban babu etc.
GG played a widower with 2 young children(boy and girl) to support. Unable to find work he helps the villains by doing cheque forgery. He gets caught and
is thrown in jail. Brother and sister are left to fend for themselves. They grow up(Muthuraman and Jaya) not knowing where the father is. Muthuraman falls in love with a doctor(VN) and jaya gets married to a banker(soban babu). GG gets released from jail. The villains still wanting to exploit his forgery talents lures
him by promising to show where his kids are. The bad guys plan a bank heist and during the crime GG
kills one of the banker. He flees from the police and lands up in Muthuramans house . Everyone is overjoyed
with the reunion but its short lived as GG soon learns that he banker he killed is his own son in law.
The death of soban babu will not be revealed to the pregnant Jaya. The rest of the film is about guilt, love
and revelation.

The film had excellent performance from all but the real scene stealer was Jaya. The titles said 'arimugam' Jaya. But her portrayal of a naive innocent girl was better than many experienced performers.

MSV tuned in some good songs.
'anbu vandhadhu'(SPB for GG/TMS,SJ for Muthu and Jaya)
'anubhavam thaane peravendum'(TMS, LRE)
'thaalikku..'(SJ)

The film was directed by seasoned kaNNada director Puttanna kanagal.

Ramki,

Though I love to listen to rare pow songs, don't you think it is nice once in a while to remember a popular song like this one?

Storyline: (May be wrong in some places due to my fading memory). :)
Jayachithra and vidhubala are sisters and their mother brings them up with hatred for Siva and muthu's parents. She wants to take revenge on siva and muthu's parents using her daughters for sending her husband to jail. idhaan engamma sabadham.
The 2 sisters somehow marry the brs and try to break the family up. Hence the fight between the sisters. :)
In the end, jc's father comes from jail and reveals that he is the culprit and the girls and mom relaise their mistake and subam. :)

Song: isaiyin mazhaiyile

MD: VSNarasimman
Year : 1986

VSN was one of the talented but unrecognised MD's of TFM. After making a successful debut in 'achamillai achamillai', he worked in very few movies. Allmost all of them had atleast one good song and the remaining were above average. But somehow he never made it to the top league.
I think 'paasamalargaL' was his last film in tamil. That film too had some good songs.

'kadaiKKaN paarvai' , I believe, had Pandian and iLavarasi(That should tell you the fate of the film). It had 2 other good numbers
'vizhi deepam unnai thedum'(SPB, PS) and 'aedho oru raagam'(PS).

Todays song is semiclassical piece with some good singing by VJ and KJY. Their strong classical background comes handy in singing such compositions.

Another catchy melody featuring VJ/ KJY (by SG this time) is: Cheppukkudam Thookippora Chellamma...

Great going, Ramki/Neel D.

Hi Ramki,

Nice song! Strange to know sung by KJ/VJ combi.

Well it reminds of 'Thanni karuthurichu kannu thavalai satham' from Ilamai oonjaladithu film.
For that matter there are many songs which resemble this.

Song: maalai poNNaana maalai
Movie: nilave malare
Singers : KJYesudoss, Vani Jairam
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan
MD: MSViswanathan
Year : 1986

This is one of my favorite song from mid 80s. That was the time when MSV and KJY started working together again after a few years break in their working relationship.
They came out with some good songs like 'ninnaiye radhiyendru', 'rasathi rosapoove', 'sari sariyene aezhu swarangalum', 'naan uLLadhai sollattumaa' etc .

Nilave malare was Nadhiya's second film in tamil and actor Rahman's first film. The film also brought back director SAC to family dramas. I believe Nadhiya did a dual role. Rajesh and baby Shalini were also in the film.
The title track by PS is the most famous song in this film. Though todays pick was aired frequently during the films release it soon faded away from the memories of listeners and radio dj's.

Milave Malare must be one of the last decent hits of MSV as a solo MD. The movie was irritating thanks to Shalini, but had a decent run thanks to then craze Nadhiya.

Song: harivarasanam viswamohanam
Movie: swami aiyappan
Singer : KJYesudoss
Lyrics: Kumbakudi Kulathur Iyer
MD: GDevarajan
Year : 1975

Tamil month margazhi is considered as a 'peedai' month. Marriages or other functions are generally not held in this month. But at the same time this is the most festive month(apart from being the most pleasant one). Christians celebrating the birth of christ, ayyappa bakthas celebrating their mandala poojai and iru mudi kattudhal, vaishnavites(and others) chanting the thiruppavai, shaivaites celebrating thiruvathirai, kacheris in the music sabhas all happen in this month.
I view pongal as a culmination of all these festivities.

'Harivarasanam' is Not a rare song(or prayer) but the KJY's version is the most pleasant one. The interludes and KJY's voice makes the song totally divine. There have been many movies on aiyappan, but i think swami aiyappan was the first film on him.
It had Master sekar in the role of ayyappan and srividya in the role of his step mom. I do not remember other details.
The songs by Devarajan were very good.
'sabari malaiyil vanna chandrodhyam' and 'swamiye charanam charanam poNaiyappaa' (both by TMS)
'thiruparkadalil paLLi'(KJY)
'sivaperumaane kaNNaperumaane'(PBS,PS)
'thanga padhumai ondru'(Madhuri)

The origin and meaning of harivarasanam can be found in the following link.

Bharathiraja hit the lowest nadir of his career with 'vaalibame vaa vaa'.
It was crass, crude and completely pointless. The director might have thought that he can churn out any crap in the form of a film and the audience would go ga ga over it. Well they did but not in appreciation.
Even ilaiyaraja, who always created the best tunes for BR films, couldnt come up with more than one good song(todays).
IMO the other melodious song 'ponvaana poongaavil' is just an average one.
Todays song is a melodious composition sung well by PS and MV. Surprisingly the song was not aired in VB much(atleast not when i was listening which was most of the time then :)

Thanks Ramki for this nice song! But doesn't this remind of an old song, I remember this was tuned with someother old song in mind. Somewhere read in some magazine of that time.

As it was well known, BR gave this crap as he was angry with the fans as they had ditched his earlier movie 'Kadhal Oviuym' (Another utter bore - except for the wonderful IR and some good Janagaraj in that movie). IR had to give the tunes in a hurry and BR made this movie in record time. Even the title is a borrowed from the Ram Lakshman Song which is not a BR trend.

Thanks for the song, PS sounds really sweet. "kanne Balam" had a better air time.

This is a lovely song by mellisai mannar. PS and SPB playful rendition makes the song more enjoyable. Even in mid 80s, PS voice had the same sweetness as it had in the 60s.

Sugamaana raagangaL had sivakumar, saritha and jeevitha in the cast. I think it was directed by RSundararajan. The song was picturised on SK and saritha.

Song: raagangaL en jeevithangaL
Movie: thiruppam
Singer : PSuseela
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
MD: MSViswanathan
Year : 1984

It was the mid 80s. I was bored one night and was surfing the radio stations. I landed in MadrasA , which was airing an interview with Vairamuthu. He was talking about the favorites of his songs. He had the usual 'iLaiya nila','sangeetha jaadhi mullai' etc. He then talked about this song. He mentioned that he has written very few songs for MSV and todays pick is one of his best. He also recalled receiving a telephone call from PS appreciating him for the lyrics.

But this song couldnt compete with the amazing stuff IR was churning out that period. It had a very brief airtime and finally vanished from the airwaves.

I believe the song is for Sujatha. Thiruppam also had sivaji, prabhu , ambika (and KRV?).

THe family starts looking for a groom for suhu. They find a good alliance but the grooms family demands dowry. Suhasini's parents accepts to the 'deal' and they kind of force suhasini to accept the proposal. She is reluctant and her grandfather supports her. How her GF saves her from this marriage covers the rest of this relatively short film.
Todays song is about the peN paarkum padalam. VM's sharp lyrics is excellently brought to life by VJ's voice. The song might not be as popular as megame but nevertheless a very good one.

'adhikaalaiyil pani' (SPB) is another enjoyable song from this film.

There is another song by Malaysia vasudevan but im unable to recall the lines.

Song: kaNNe kaNNaana
Movie: peNNukku yaar kaaval
Singers : SJanaki, SPB
Lyrics: Aalangudi Somu
MD: Ramesh Naidu
Year : 1980

Melody at its best.
SJanaki at her sweetest.
SPB at his weirdest(In the second half).

This stupid film with srikanth and jayachitra is worth remembering just for this song. A fleeting melody accentuated by sweet voice of SJ and breezy interludes.
The suruLirajan portion is the dhrishti part.

I believe the song is in anandha bhairavi raagam. I see similarities to 'thannanthanimaiyile', 'konja naaL poru' and also to 'mettupodu'(duet).

Song: kanni vaNNam
Movie: auto raja
Singers : SPB, Vani Jairam
Lyrics: ?
MD: Shanakr Ganesh
Year : 1982

You always have to be careful in appreciating SG songs. You never know which ones are their originals and which are suttals.
Auto Raja had 3 MDs, IR and SG duo. 'sangathil paadatha' by IR is a fantastic piece.
So i was impressed when SG tuned the other 2 good songs in this film.
'malare ennenne kolam'(SPB) and todays song.
But during my short stint in Blore, i discovered the kaNNada originals of these 2 songs. The original songs were tuned by Rajan nagendra for the kaNNada film with the same title 'auto raja'.
The original had shankar Nag and Gayathiri. The same heroine acted in tamil remake with Vijaykanth.
The original was sung by SPB and SJ. You can listen to the song here

Song: thangachi thangachi enge pore
Movie: kutti
Singer : iLaiyaraja
Lyrics: iLaiyaraja
MD: iLaiyaraja
Year : 2001

Very often i make fun of those senseless mass action masala movies in which every damsel in distress will be saved by punch dialogue mouthing vijay or vikram or rajinikanth.
When i was watching Kutti, i was wishing..actually praying for any of the above to come and rescue
that small innocent girl from her impending journey.
Kutt is a fantastic piece of cinema. This touching film starts with the journey of a small village girl kutti(Swetha) to chennai to work as a housemaid/cook/babysitter. Her employers, a young working couple (Ramesh Aravind and Kousalya) are nice to her, but their first son takes a instant dislike towards her. The arrival of Ramesh Aravinds mom(MNRajam) makes life more complicated for kutti. She befriends a good soul(Vivek) in the neighbourhood maLigai kadai. She also comes in acquaintance with a bad guy(Ramesh khanna), who exploits her innocence and sells her to Red light district in Bombay. Unaware of this ploy, the girl sneaks out from her employers flat and starts another journey. She thinks she is going back to her village to see her mom, brother etc. But we know where her journey is to.

And this is where todays song is played. In the background. My respect for IR as a lyricist grew manifold after listening the excellent lines.

pachai kodi kattum pavi magan ippo sivappu kodi katta maatano
sivapu viLakkukku nee poi serathaan pachai viLakku pottaano

Every soul that watched this scene would have had the same prayer in their hearts.

Tears well up eyes when he sings the lines

kanavodu payanangaL pogidnra kaNNe
pogum oor edhuvendru arivaayo kaNNe
kaNNe maniye amudhe kaRpagame

Very rarely we get to watch such films in tamil. Film that draws you in and makes you a part of it is a rarity in our tamil films.
The girl Swetha is a real real find. It was a stunning performance. Her facial expressions are a treat to watch. She could take class for the current heartthrobs.
Everyone in the film did very well(Ramesh Aravind surprised me with his natural portrayal).

The film had 2 other songs by IR. But 'thangachi' is my absolute favorite.

Song: engaiyo thikku thisai
Movie: Mahanathi
Singer : Kamalhassan
Lyrics: Vaali
MD: iLaiyaraja
Year : 1994

This short bit follows one of the most emotional scene our tamil cinema has witnessed so far. When the song is played the audience breath a sigh of relief not because the preceding scene was boring but was emotionally exhausting. Kamalhassans peformance in this scene was uncomparable.
I remember watching this film in 1994 in singapore. It was before the internet days. I watched the film without any idea of what is it about. After watching it, i couldnt get the story and scenes out of my mind for few days.
Mahanadhi is another film that draws you in. Though it had some commercial elements, it was a very good film. I wish Kamal could do more of such kind of films. He played the role with so much conviction that you almost forget that you are watching a fictional character on the screen. The peformance by the supporting cast, esp SNLakshmi and Poornam , added a notch to the films appeal.

Todays song has Vali's admirable lyrics. IMO, someone other than KH should have sung the song.

Thanks Ramki for this great Song

Mahanadhi when I watched in Singapore created an impression that was very hard to explain (i had never cried before watching a movie). This intense movie had exceptional performance from Kamal and as you rightly pointed by Poornam and SNL. Rajesh's role was good as well. Vikatan after several years gave 60+ for this movie if I recall correctly.

And Kamal and the movie were forgotten during many of the awards of 1994. IR gave an unbelievable BM for this film and I could not believe that went unrecognized as well.

To me this is the best movie of 90s..

Thanks for the song

mahanadhi was a powerful movie by kamal

i saw in Ramvictoria in madurai where the 1'st day it was full and the next day you could see harldy few .. Many other masala movies which got released along with mahanadhi were running houseful

Tamil Audience doesnt need good films at all and this is one classic example..

you dont need to be a kamal fan because kamal was way beyond the normal kamal in this movie

As ramki rightly said, SNlakshmi, poornam, rajesh, thalaivasal vijay , sukanya all gave able support

spl mention about mahanadhi shobana and the teenager(grown up shobana)

thanks for the pick

Vaali's lyrics throughout the movie (in all songs) were classic and IR's music was amazing

I like Thangachi song for its opening line and the exact moment in the film it was placed. Like a picture can speak thousand words, one song line can express all the emotions when presented at the right spot. Some of the other similar movie moments (for me) are oLiyilE therivathu in Azhagi and ithO enthan deivam bit in Babu.

About Mahanadhi, I may be in the minority here. I thought that the film was very depressing, dark, bleak, pessimistic and height of melodrama.

This is the one of my favorite Songs tuned by SG duo. This is also the first duet by the 2 leading singers of TFM. I believe KJY sings for sivakumar and SPB for Kamal. Sripriya and jaisudha were their jodis.
