[tscii:fe382120af]From Kerala with Love:-

These are a few tidbits I heard, saw and read on Kerala on different topics. Let me share with you. :)

WOMEN:-
Constitution guarantees equal rights for men and women. Still the women of Kerala highly educated and employed feel marginalized. Why?
Women are yet to realize their individual potential. They are non reactive and terrified inviting atrocities against them.
A woman is raped every 6th minute, beaten up every 44 minutes and murdered for dowry every 90 minutes. Globally three percent of women are harassed, which is 30 percent in India and in Kerala it is still higher. :?:
Crime records bureau said that in 2005, there were 2433 cases of sexual harassment, 54 rapes, 125 kidnappings, 2579 physical atrocities and 2759 other violence acts. We all know that al cases do not come to the station/court.
Why is she victimized?
Woman is portrayed as an object of lust. She is used to promote commodities. No woman is spared from the glaring eye of men-which women take it with out protest. Any one who protests is branded as bad, even by other women.
We lavishly quote what is said about women-like “if a woman is educated and uplifted the entire society and then the nation too is uplifted”. But women are used and abused.
WEDDINGS:-
Employed and educated women are buying husbands for gold worth at least 100 sovereigns, latest car, and plots. Just to celebrate this ostentatious wedding parents lent money and finally commit suicide. Family suicides too are very common in Kerala. It seems marriage is the ultimate goal for Kerala women?
After marriage it is the abortion of female foetus. Kerala which stood first in the number of women (1052 women against 1000 men) has fallen drastically. Society wants women not to excel socially and officially. I have heard mothers complaining “do not sent her to courses like MBA and still higher degrees as it would be difficult to search a husband who is more qualified than her” it means the woman is expected to be always below her husband to preserve his ego.

The role of TV:-
T V serials produce negative role models for children and others to follow. Women perennially shed tears. The sentiment of thaali still exists. The family members glued to television, with out conversation-that is sharing their thoughts and daily happenings.
We have only 7 percent of women in the Asembly and Parliament. But 33 reservations were enforced in Panchayats. Political parties which claim equality do not come forward to reserve 33 percent seats for women. Women, even the empowered women, have the right to decide what curry to make.
Ajitha former naxalite, a terror in Pulpally in Wynad told me a few years ago, “the party members (CPM) say, “-we will take decisions and you can make tea for us” That is the situation in Kerala.

Alcoholism is the chief cause. Men indulge in domestic violence and they don’t even spare their daughters.

There are 64 laws to protect women. Instead of taking refuge in tears, they must be aware of these. Don’t you think that legal literacy should be made part of the curriculum from the upper primary levels?

AYURVEDA: _
Medical science is as old as VEDAS. There are four Vedas-namely Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva. Ayurveda is a part of Atharva Veda.
The word Ayur Veda means Science of Life. Charaka has defined it as the science through which one can gain knowledge about the useful and harmful sides of life, happy and miserable life and the span and the very nature of life.
The practice of Ayurveda is based on PANCHAMA BHOOTA THEORY AND TRIDHOSHA THEORY.
The human body is made up of Doshas, Dhatus, and Malas. The DOshas are Vatha, Pitha and Kafa. They control physiological activities of the body. The dhatus are the functional part of the body. They are seven in number. The malas are partly used and partly excreted in a modified form. These three elements are always in equilibrium. Any imbalance results disease.
The imbalance has to be studied properly to identify the disease. The patient has to observe certain dos and don’ts called Pathyas.
There are two types of treatments-SODHANA AND SAMANA
THE former is restored to such cases where the doshas are accumulated and have to be removed. SAMANA is done when the imbalance is little.
The SODHANAS are of five types-VAMANA, VIRECHANA, NASYAM, VASTHI, AND RAKTHAMOKSHAM.
VAMANA-EMESIS THERAPY
VIRECHANA-PURGATION THERAPY
NASYAM-NASAL MEDICATIONS
VASTHI-MEDICATED ENIMA
RAKTHAMOKSHAM-BLOOD LETTING THERAPY
These are collectively called Panchkarma.
Before panchakarma the patient has to undergo SNEHANA (OILATION THERAPY) and SWEDANA KARMA (SUDATION THERAPY)
These therapies rejuvenate the body. Rheumatism, lumbago, spondylitis, muscular diseases and chronic head aches.
Besides these there are DHARA, PIZHICHAL, NJAVARAKIZHI AND SIROVASTHI. It would take five weeks to complete the process.
The patient lying in a wooden thoni called enna thoni-is made of medicinal wood. The head rests on a basin part and the neck rests on a bridge. It is said that patients with high sugar and pressure should not undergo this treatment, without controlling them. thulam, kumbham, and karkitakam are the best months to perform these.
Pizhichil, Dhara, Sirovasthi, Annalepanam and Sirolepanam are also forms other methods of available treatments.

CHAMPARUTHI: -
There are many varieties of Champaruthi or shoe flower. The flowers and leaves form the essential part of toiletries. It can arrest premature graying, and falling of hair. The paste of flowers and leaves act as anti dandruff agents.
The decoction of champaruthi bud is capable arresting bleeding. Various preparations of champaruthi are used to prevent constipation. Coconut oil boiled with champaruthi petals heals external ulcers.
Champaruthi grows easily. Stem cuttings are used to propagate. The cuttings will flower with in two months. Regular pruning helps sprouting of flowering shoots.
Before trying self treatment consult an ayurvedic physician.

GOLDEN YARN: -
Keralam the word is believed to be the derived from the Keram which means coconut. There is another version that Cheralam in due course became Keralam. Anyway, it is a land of coconut. The coir and the coir products produced from the husk are popular all over the world. The quality of coir from Kerala has en edge over the brown fiber used elsewhere. The government has charted out a clear cut strategy to boost the export of coir products and the target fixed is RS 1500 Crores.
Coir matting, coir tiles, rugs, car mats, tinkers like earrings, necklaces and shopping bags, have arrived the market to lure the consumer. Coir murals carefully crafted with soft delicate coir fiber are exquisite pieces of art. It enhances the beauty of the interiors. Good time for the golden yarn.
The living conditions of the coir workers too have to be improved. Retting causes pollution of the backwaters. Women who sit for long hours beating the rotten husk too are exposed to skin diseases. So the government should take care of their welfare as well. Without them there will be no coir and no import.

IXORA:- We call it thetti in Malayalam. There are about 400 species and the flowers are red, yellow, white and magenta. There are hybrids available in pink and salmon. It is the national flower of SURINAM. The shrub grows to a height of 10ft. It blooms in all seasons.
There are two varieties the tall and the dwarf. Miniature ones are bushy and can be grown in pots.
You cannot call it a shade loving plant. The plant is propagated by semi ripe cuttings and suckers from lateral roots. In a polythene bag fill equal quantities of sand and cow dung powder; plant the ripe cutting that is all.
The seedlings can be replanted in a pot containing a mixture of gravel, sand and cow dung powder. Water once a day. Add two spoons of Neem cake thrice a week along with cow dung powder.
The plant will look elegant if pruned. It provides shades to door porches and backyard. The flowers last long and can be used to decorate interiors. The flowers have medicinal qualities.

[tscii:4835ce6107]Here is a translation of a poem penned by MAHAKAVI ULLOOR PARAMESWARA IYER. i read it today.

FUTURE:-

SPREADING THE COWRIES BEFORE THE LAMP,
THE ASTROLOGER CALCULATES
TRYING TO UNRAVEL THE FUTURE
PERHAPS ALL THE DARKNESS AROUND
IS NOW GATHERED WITHIN HIM
THE LAMP WONDERS
AND GAZES UNBLINKING
“ARE WE STARS
TO BE HELD IN YOUR HANDS?”
THE COWRIES SEEM TO QUESTION AND LAUGH
“THEN COUNT THE STARS
ON THE BLUE BOARD OF THE SKY”
SAYS ALSO THE LIZARD’S VOICE
“LET US NOT STOKE THE FIRE IN THE HEART
TO SMOKE THE GREEN FRUIT OF TODAY
INTO THE RIPENESS OF TOMORROW
GOD HAS WRIT THE FATE OF ALL
“THOSE THAT ARE BORN SHALL DIE”
WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?
THIS IS THE AUSPICIOUS MOMENT
FOR DOING GOOD
NEVER SHOULD THERE BE TIME FOR EVIL
IN THIS LIFE
SHORT AND MUTABLE”

[tscii:8e14594b87]Surya Kaladi Mana:-
“It is believed that Surya Kaladi Mana is as old as Kerala itself. The present structure was built during the reign of Maharaja Swati Tirunal who had received mantropadesam from the then head of the Mana. He unfailingly visited this Mana whenever he visited Kumaranallor. He saw the dilapidated structure when the Mana was financial crisis and helped to renovate the Mana” said Surya Subramanium Bhattathirippad, the head of the Mana who was in the city for a personal visit.
This Mana is known for conducting tantra and mantravadam (Science of Mantras). It is believed to be the abode of Lord Ganesa.
“In fact the mana was earlier located in the Malabar region. With the differences of opinion with the then Zamorin around 600 years ago, followed by Revathi Pattathanam, the family moved to Kottayam (Thekkumkur). ('Revathi Pattathanam', is the annual intellectual meeting among Vedic scholars held at the Tali temple.)” The Zamorin never entertained Brahmins south of Gaunipuzha. Still the head of the Mana participated Pattathanam. Zamorin honored him at the same time sent people to locate the Mana. It is said that the river took a different course and thus the Mana became north of the Gaunipuzha. Even today if you look at the course of the river, you can see the river meandering round the Mana. It is because of the grace of Lord Ganesa” explained Surya Subramanium. “Earlier the Mana was known as Kaladi Mana and nearly eight generations ago, the head of the Mana had the Vision of Surya, the Sun God and since the Mana is prefixed with Surya. There are many stories related to Surya Kaladi Mana. Kottarathil Sankunni in his work on Aithihyamaala has included the legends attached to this Mana” he added.
The Mana is organizing what is called Gangapravaham. What is it all about?

“Gange cha Yamune chaiva Godavari Saraswathi
Narmade Sindhu Kaveri Jalesmin Sannidhim kuru"

Life cannot exist without Water. We a team of 60 would be collecting water from the perennial springs of the seven sacred Rivers and the holy waters of Maanasarovar. No puja can be performed with out water and above all, the people should be made of aware of the extent of damage and pollution, and its consequences. The collected water is further sanctified by chanting Vedas for 60 days at the Sree Padmanabha Swami Temple. As I said, the Mana is an abode of Lord Vinayaka and on the day of Vinayaka chaturthi, ablution is performed with this sanctified water. Then on an appointed day a conch of sanctified water is poured into all the 44 rivers of Kerala. Environmentalists do participate. They address the people on river pollution and the need to protect our water sources. None has the right to pollute the river. The world does end with me. We have to conserve water for posterity” said Bhattathirippad. (479 WORDS)

Isn't keralam a derivate of chera?

yes. it is another version. since two decades or so keralam has become rubberalam. (keram=naalikeram=coconut). One cannot stand below a rubber tree, because of the hotness. You feel terribly hot underneath a rubber tree. when you happen to be in a rubber estate -it will be like a preheated oven! in due course I fear the atmospheric temperature would rise further due to more area coming under rubber cultivation.

[tscii:d6cf163786]Veluthampi Dalawa
“A man of extraordinary ability and talents strong passions and quick sensibility and was amazingly bold and daring,” remarked Kottarathil Shangoonny Menon, on Veluthampi Dalawa. Born to Valiyaveettil Valliyyammapilla Thankachi, and Manakkara Kunjumayitti Pilla, in 1765, at Thalakkulam Veluthampi was an exponent, in martial arts. He led a disciplined life.
He proved his ability as the kariakar, and mulaku madiseela sarvadhi kariakar, and the Dewan Chirayinkizh Ayyappan Chempa Raman Pillai need not think twice for appointing him as his successor. Veluthampi could put an end to corruption and injustice. He launched touring court. The team traveled, from place to place hearing grievances and pronouncing immediate judgments. On one such journey, the team identified Pathiramanalpuram a fertile island, amidst the backwaters near Alappuzha. The punishment was severe and many regarded him as a cruel Dewan.

As a reformer, he attempted reclamation of the fallow land, the opening of the kollam –shenkotta road, construction of canals, and roads, improved trade and commerce. He felt the need for a Huzur Cutchery. The palaces near the eastern entrance of the Padmanabha temple were built by him. The streets around the Fort area, and an open ground (now KSRTC garage and the iron villa park) where people assembled to express their grievances, the survey of the land, and assessment of tax based on the yield, (kandezhuthu) were his innovations. He made primary education compulsory. While his predecessors enjoyed the privilege of drawing money from the treasury, Thampi fixed monthly salary. There existed an anti Dewan group, which plotted conspiracy. The Resident Macaulay informed of the conspiracy and asked him to meet the Maharaja. The conspirators became active once again. In the mean time Thampi, cut the soldier’s allowance, which led to an immediate revolt. When his life was at stake, he committed suicide at the Mannadi Bhagavathi Temple, instead of surrendering to the British.
Though we consider the Sepoy Mutiny (1857) as the first revolt against the Imperial Power, in fact Veluthampi raised voice against the British for the first time that is in 1809. He addressed a large gathering at Kundara and proclaimed to oust the British.

tscii]Wood sculpture in Nagaroor Temple:-
Nagaroor is a small hamlet, six miles away from Attingal which is 16 Km away from Thiruvananthapuram. The 15th century temple has precious wood carvings and it is a pity that no consecrated effort is taken to protect the valuable wood carvings.
Entrance:-
On the southern side of the entrance there is a wooden pillar the lower portion of which contains a remarkable bas relief carving of Bhagavathi. It is an ideal example in the evolution of indigenous pillar type before the influence of Chalukya and Chola architecture. (Its influence can be seen in the pillar with a magnificent capital at the Padmanabhapuram Palace). On either side of the entrance that leads inside there is a pair of stone sculptures.
MANDAPA: - ON THE sloping rafters in the ceiling are seen excellent wood carvings. These rafters are curved and the lower terminals are decorated with carvings of deities.
The carvings are more than one foot in length and are executed in full relief.

A striking feature is the presence of a triple headed serpent zigzagging along the rafters, and their heads rose above the head of the deities like a canopy.

DEVI ON KAALA:-Devi here is the destroyer of evil forces. The expression is finely rendered. Her shield and the saber demonstrate how terrible she can be on the war path. The raised head of the triple headed naaga constitutes the upper spatial division and includes in its circular composition-the face of the devi. The lower compartment occupying nearly one fourth of the total vertical space is devoted to the body and her vahana.
The neck of the animal, the uplifted arms and saber and the ascending line of the hood supplement the fury and grandeur.
DEVI AND ASURA:-

It represents a dynamic fight between Devi and Asura called Vaana, the story of which is similar to the legend of Bana samhara. The carving depicts the last phase of the war. Devi is close behind the heels of Asura. The apprehensive glance of the Vaana, his stride, the determination of Devi, can be well appreciated. The Devi stands on a lower level. The “ground” seems ascending. The structure of vaana is large and on a “higher ground” he appears gigantic.
NARASIMHAMURTHI:-
The striking feature is the face and its resemblance to the theatrical forms of Kerala. Its widely dilated eyes, ear to ear mouth, gruesome grimace, sharp canines half human and half lion nature is highly impressive. He is ready to pounce on the enemy, to tear the entrails out. Crossed legs, the horizontal band below the knees, radiating line from the hood of the serpent and the pyramidal effect as suggested by the extended hands on either side bear an eloquent testimony to the skill of the unknown craftsman.

SHASTHA:-

It is a different and unusual carving of shastha. The free flowing curves of the body, narrow shoulders with plumb limbs and the childish look, indicates that it is Shastha. The left arm is held over the left knee. There is a knee band. Instead of the usual squatting posture he is seated comfortably on the peedam. Analogous work of Shastha can be seen in the temple of Sree Padmanabha in Thiruvananthapuram.
VIGNESWARA: -
This is the best work of all. A similar work kept detached can be seen at Devaeswaram near Kilimanoor. There is a usual canopy of floral and beads projecting over the head of Vigneswara. This canopy though does not have any peculiar function in the carving and might be the improvisation of the master hand. . The ornaments are minutely carved and over crowded as against the simple Shastha.
Nagroor is a remote village and hence the temple remains neglected for long and a systematic study of the precious wood carvings in this temple is the need of the hour.

[tscii:2f63839d5a]These days Kerala is rocked by two major events-Namely Sister Abhaya Case and Munnar Mission.
1. Sister Abhaya case: Body of Sister Abhaya of St. Pious convent was found in a well with in the premises of the convent on 12/ 4/ 1992.
2. The local police said it was a suicide.
3. The CBI said it was a homicide.
4. But none was punished.
5. A few weeks ago Mr. Sreejan a correspondent of Indian Express came with report that was like a bolt from the blue. He proved that the medical report of SR. Abhaya was tampered with.
The Case:
• Sister abhaya, daughter of M Thomas of Aykarakunnel House Kottayam, was found dead in the well of St Pious Convent, Kottayam.
• She was the student of BCM College doing her second year Pre-degree.
• So far the case remained inconclusive and was facing a natural death.
• On 12-4-2007, Sreejan came with a shocking report saying that the results of the chemical examination of the vaginal swab and smear had been tampered with at the Chief Chemical Examiners Laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram.
• The initial tests confirmed the presence of human semen but the reports were corrected to conclude that semen was not detected.
• The media gave due importance to the report
• Joe mon puthenpurackal a human right activist filed a petition.
• Further test at the National Forensic Lab confirmed the tampering.
• A case was registered against Chief Chemical Examiner and Chemical analyst R. GEETHA and M CHITHRA for committing forgery.
• The duos were absconding for days and finally surrendered and were given bail but are under suspension.
• Many of the crucial evidence, like her personal belongings, veil, foot wear, diary, and the material evidence sent for chemical evidence, were destroyed preventing CBI from further enquiry.
• The FIR from the fire station kottayam and that from the police station were too missing.
• The last thing to miss was the postmortem record of the Kottayam Medical College.
• After 10 months enquiry, it was concluded that Sr ABHAYA committed suicide.
• The case was handed to CBI. Varghese P.THOMAS was the CBI official. He resigned his job with ten more years to go in service.
• Varghese remarked that he resigned because he could not comply with the directives given by CBI PS V THYAGARAJAN.
• Thus the case was handed to M L SHARMA, JOINT Director CBI.
• His Team requested the court to write off the case.
• The court dismissed the case and directed the CBI to pursue the investigation honestly
• The CBI concluded that it was a homicide-with out locating the culprits-the reason being lack of evidences.
• Re investigation began in 2001. The team led by DIG NANDA KUMAR, came to the same conclusion.
• Now the CBI CI Subhash Guddu and SI Vinod are here, in Kerala.
• LET US SEE.
• MUNNAR MISSION FOLLOWS.

This is very sad. One of the nice things about going to TN or Kerala used to be seeing so many people on the streets wearing our own dress, rather than a copy of western dress. In TN, veshtis have been slowly fading away in recent years, and it is a pity to see that that trend is starting in Kerala as well. Kerala has traditionally been so much better at preserving culture than TN!

The brides who cannot afford to pay dowry opt for groom from Haryana, where the men finds it difficult to find a suitable bride. Nearly 200 marriages have already taken place. RAMANTHALI AND KUNHIMANGALAM in Payyannur and HANSI in Haryana are the places where these marriages take place. The couples are happy. According to the report an amount of two crore has been deposited by the family members of the South Indian lottery king S MARTIN in the development bonds issued by Desabhimani. The bonds are under the name of M CHARLES AND M DAISON sons of MARTIN.
The issue questions the ethics of accepting huge amounts from a man who the party alleges has dubious background.
V S ACHUTHANANDAN the chief minister and the other ministers, alleged that MARTIN DEFAULTED on tax arrears amounting crores due to exchequer. The G M of DESABHIMANI, E P JAYARAJAN admitted that accepting bonds from the martins relatives but justified that it was a legal form of deposit. THE amount will be deposited later.
Early this week, MATRUBHUMI office was attacked by CPM workers and the copies were set ablaze. Today E P JAYARAJAN said that “MATHRUBHUMI is a yellow daily” but Achuthanandan said that “IT IS A NATIONAL DAILY”
Long back THE party journalist pinarayi Vijayan said that “news papers and journalists are good for nothing” ; then last month he said “there is a media syndicate working against the CPM led government”
YESTERDAY the deputy GM of Desabhimani was kicked of for receiving one crore from LIS a financial agency to hush up something.
Three or four years back when the allegation of receiving money from MANI ACHAN (unpopular liquor manufacturer), by the CPM rocked the state E K NAYANAR said “we receive money from Tom DICK AND HARRY for the party”

[tscii:c03c5be104]Is the CADRE PARTY-losing image?
So many things are happening in Kerala. Munnar episode finds it place regularly in all dailies. Let me explain what (com) mission Munnar is all about.
• The opposition party leader and the former Chief Minister Ommen Chandy complaints of encroachments in Munnar.
• Revenue and Forest Ministers followed by the chief minister endorsed Chandy’s findings.
• V S has vowed that he would see that all encroachers, corrupt officials, anti social elements etc are punished.
• He appointed a team of three-RISHI RAJ SINGH IPS, RAJU NARAYANA SWAMI (IAS), AND SURESHKUMAR.
• RISHI RAJ SINGH is a popular official. Most of the times he takes new avatars in the filmy style and appear anywhere at anytime to catch the culprits red hand. He once accompanied a lorry driver as a cleaner and at the check post offered commission to the police men and arrested them. He is an ardent film viewer.
• Raju Narayana swami is a tough officer, and hence was transferred many times. He won IAS with first rank.
• Suresh kumar is also equally tough.
• SO many including the party chief secretary Pinarayi Vijayan objected the posting of the trio.
• The Chief Minister assured the team that there will not be any political interference/presure.
• The trio demolished encroached structures using JCB. And in these days J C B has become the hero.
• Every one was shocked to see JCB in action. Huge structures were erased.
• V S and his bold action were hailed by the media and the public.
• Pinarayi could not tolerate this. He issued a statement saying that “NO INDIVIDUAL NEED TO CLAIM THE CREDIT FOR MUNNAR MISSION”
• VS retorted ‘YES THE credit GOES TO THE PEOPLE of Kerala who elected the LDF.
• PINARAYI said those who claims are in a fool’s paradise.
• Much mud slinging was done.
• The politburo interfered and suspended the duo from the politburo.
• By then 21 days have elapsed. It dawned on CPI one of the coalition party protested the demolition of their party office at Munnar.
• IT created much furor.
• The Chief minister ISSUED an G O which said “no party office or a place of worship would be demolished even if it is erected on an encroached land”
• The govt rolled back the next day. The order was withdrawn.
• The team was invited to the called to the capital.
• The chief minister said openly that the team especially suresh kumar was given a warning.
• Suresh denied it and took a week leave and left for Delhi in protest.
• The Revenue minister K P Rajendran, in the mean time went to Munnar. He climbed a craggy hill and read a notice. “this much of land 9000 acres is now owned by the govt”
• Suresh was irked. He asked the chief minister to clarify whether the team exists.
• By the time, Mathrubhumi came with a scoop. DGM of DESHABJIMANI-the MOUTH PIECE OF CPI (M), received one crore from a financial company.
• Next day it came with another news that the party received 2 crore from the Lottery king Martin.
• CPM is known for bucket collection, and receiving favors from liquor contractors for providing license. Now the amount touched millions.
• Three days ago the CM visited Munnar, and acquired 2000 acres of land, owned by TATA.
• TATA explained that it was not their property.

• THE next day the revenue minister (CPI) said in the ASSEMBLY that the land acquired by the CM is the government’s property.
• The revenue minister is yet to clarify the owner of the land he acquired a fortnight ago? Is it also owned by the govt?
• V S replied that “the CPI would be piqued, if the govt touches TATA ‘s property”
• This has annoyed CPI
• Now administration has almost come to grinding halt.

GENTS ARE COMFORTABLE IN PANTS I BELIEVE. Adolescent boys wear Bermudas and similar things. The present generation is not favoring mundu. Once in a while they go temples-where mundu is mandatory and many need belts other wise it will not remain in place.
Well I couldnt comment on mundus but I wear veshtis ALL the time while I'm at HOME atleast.....been wearing it for the last 5-6 years, courtesy of my dad who'd insisted on it! :P
I continiued wearing it even when I was living in Singapore.....nowadays even (present-gen.) women shy away from wearing Sarees after going abroad (altho they dont mind wearing salwars)....even in countries like Singapore known for its ethnic asian prominence! :(

[tscii:fbdd4b3e60]B VASANTA

She has melodiously rendered a handful of film songs in Malayalam. Still she has never been in the limelight. A singer of yester generation, B Vasanta was in the capital yesterday, to stage a musical evening organized by Kailrali Art Lovers Association (KALA), at the Priyadarsini Hall. In an interview the singer describes how she came to the film world, how she regrets for not systematically learning classical music, and obviously, wonders why she was not recognized by the Kerala State Government.

I am always fascinated by Lata Mangeshkar’s song, and tried to sing like her. Being a child and singing hit numbers, I became a pet and popular in the neighborhood. I was invited to sing a few numbers during weddings. It is a inherent quality. My mother Kanakadurga was an accomplished veena player. Father Raveendranath was an all-rounder. I did not obey my mother -for she insisted to learn classical music. But I am attracted in my father’s line of light music. You need have to learn and practice. I have a sweet voice and I could reproduce what other sang, and hence I thought there is no need for training. That was a great mistake. I underestimated the benefits of learning carnatic music” she said.
Vasanta’s father had acted in films and with his contact in the film industry; she had the chance to sing for films. “One day I was called for an audition. In the 60s there was no sophistication as we see today. I sang Lata’s song. The music director, Pingala Nagendra Rao was impressed and he commented thus-“The song has all the details yet you have never tried to imitate her. A rare feat indeed” Then invitations from Kannada and Tamil came. In the Tamil industry M S Viswanathan and K V Mahadevan were ruling the roost. Then assistants of these directors like Pukazhenthi, introduced her in Malayalam.
“I am proud to say that I have sung for all the music directors. Also, I have sung with all male and female singers. Discernible music lovers may remember the songs “Kudamulla poovinum malayaali penninum..” Chandran udikkunna dikkil.. Chanchalitha..Chanchalitha..” Yavana Sundari.. and Pottu vaitha kukhamo..Katti vaitha kuzhalo..”
Vasanta has sung for Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Tulu, Sinhalese, and Sanskrit. In the 60s she was invited by HMV.
“Despite of this why you were side lined?”
To be frank, my priorities were different. I am a house wife then a mother and then only a singer. I was never after fame and popularity. When music directors invited occasionally I never refused. So I could render only 3500 songs. In between I was asked to compose songs for a Kannada and then Telugu films. SPB, PBS, S Janaki, P Suseela, and Vani Jayaram sang for me. The music director who introduced me appreciated my endeavor as the music director. That was the greatest encomium.
Vasantha was conferred Kalaimamani Award by the Tamil Nadu Government, Ugadi Award by the Andra Pradesh Government, and the MACTA Award. “My children are well placed. They have the flair for music but are not for venturing in the film industry. They play veena and are blessed with sweet voice. Any way I am a contented mother. I have no regrets. I have invested my earnings in the higher studies of my children. They are looking after me well. That is what I need now” she said.

MY FRIEND EXPERIENCED AN EARTH QUAKE TODAY. HERE IS A SMALL ACCOUNT OF IT.

"I'm attaching a news which will give a short picture of today's earthquake. In Japan, new houses/apartments are made in such a way that they can make pendulam type movements during earthquake. Most of these type of houses are made of wood and filling is weightless material instead of cement. This is to avoid head injuries and breakage of bones during the sudden demolition of building. These buildings will sustain if the magnitude is less than 8.0. Another important thing is that gas, electricity and water will be automatically stopped. Also, the telephone connections. Today in Japanese news they were announcing that DOCOMO company's cellular ohone still works there. Many houses were destroyed, they are all old Japanese traditional houses with elegant look, the roof will be similar to that of castles, paved with heavy enameled blue tiles. In Japanese these type of houses are known as "Jikka". They couldn't survive today's earthquake.
All transportation is stopped since many roads and bridges were broken. These heavy shakings will move to many miles and had affected Tokyo and Tsukuba as well. In my home sOme of the soft dolls kept on television fell down and the hanging light was executing simple harmonic oscillations for 20-30 seconds. Actually, it is nice to experience these nature's movements from a far away place. Of course, it is not good. This is the third biggest earthquake that I could experience during my stay in Japan.

I'm just copying and pasting a believable news about today's happenings in Japan.

Any study of an art form would be incomplete unless it is examined in the background of the cultural milieu it was born in and the time-line through which it evolved into the present form. Aware of this fact Dr Raja Warrier in his three-part monograph on Malayalam theatre, walks us through the early days of the stage, analyses the different aspects and puts the current scenario in perspective.

The thorough grounding of the author in the genre and his knowledge of theatre in the Occident give the work wholesomeness. This however is not a didactic work expounding dry theories of dramatics. On the contrary, he raises and answers questions-questions that the layman is prone to ask. In the process he lays bare the concepts in a simple manner, appealing to even one who has no knowledge of theatre and the performance arena.

Written with the erudition of a researcher, marked by a detachment of a historian and prompted by the passion of an aficionado, the book is a valuable addition to literature on Theatre.

VISIT OF SOULS:-
The idea of departed souls visiting their friends is common to many races. The belief is tht departed souls come to partake of victuals prepared for them by their relatives.
Examples of feast of souls in different parts of the world:-
1. Madagascar- the elegant upper chamber in King Radams mausoleum was furnished with a table and two chairs. A bottle of wine, water, were palced so that the ghost of the departed monarch might occassionaly visiting this resting place.
2. China:-the Chinese summon ancestral souls with prayer on special days.
3. Europe:- the custom of setting empty seats at the ST JOHN S’ EVE FEAST for the departed souls of Kinsfolk is said to have lasted to the 17th century.
4. Bulgaria: feast is held in the cementry of Palm Sunday.
5. Russia:- prayer at the graves of lost relatives and giving alms to he poor

6. The Hindus offer to the dead the funeral cakes, oblations of balls of rice, libations of water, on the day of sraddha.
Kerala:
In Kerala the feast of souls falls on the new moon day in the month of Karkitakam (July-August/Aadi Ammavasai). The feast of the souls falls on 12th August this year. The day is considered sacred to the spirits of the dead.
On this day people visit river banks /or seashores. Oblations of rice and libations of water are offered to the manes of ancestors. It is held to be most meritorious if one can go to Rameswaram bathe in the Rama Sethu, and perform sradha there. The sradha is not to propitiate the spirit of any particular diseased but is designed to propitiate the manes of all ancestors.
After the sradha the offerings are placed in the yard for the crows to feed on. THE BELIEF IS THAT the diseased come in the form of crows to partake of them.
The popular spots were sradha is offered are
Sanghumugham beach, Varkala beach, Aluva, Papanasam Thirunelli in waynad, Parasurama temple.
The sea is rough these days especially so after this year’s monsoon. The government has promised to take necessary steps-that is alternative arrangements -for offering sradha. People visit Parasurama temple in Thiruvallam. It is located on the banks of Tiruvallam theertham. It is believed that PARASURAMA offered sradha to his mother at this spot. It is the only place in India (I believe) where you find temple for Parasurama.

Nature is in her gayest attire. The violence of monsoon has abated. The incessant rain ceased. Trees and shrubs are in full bloom. The days are pleasant and colorful. Nights are starry and delightful. The farmers are happy, because harvesting has begun. They are celebrating Illam Nira and Putthari (see box) two festivals which herald the onset of Thiruvonam, the great national festival.
Illam Nira and Putthari:_ Illam Nira is filling the granary with freshly harvested paddy and the Putthari is consuming new rice. Kerala was once an agricultural country. Hence harvesting paddy was an occasion of rejoice.
Before the completion of harvest, when the ears of the corn are ripe the Nira was performed. At the threshold of the house, a basket full of harvested paddy is kept on the decorated ground. A member of the family after ritualistic bath brings the basket inside rendering “Illam Nira” (fill the house), “Kollam Nira”( fill the whole year), “Paththayam Nira”(fill the granary), “Vatti Nira Kotta Nira” (fill the basket), “Nira nira nira…”.
Certain pujas are performed and payasam already prepared from the freshly harvested rice is distributed among the participants.
Illam Nira and Putthari are performed on auspicious days before Thiruvonam.
Thiruvonam:- According to the legend, Onam is celebrated in commemoration of the reign of Mahabali an Asura King. He propitiated Brahma and held unlimited sway over Bharathavarsha. It was a period of peace, prosperity and plenty. Theft, robbery and other crimes were unknown. There was no bad season even.
Devas nurtured hatred, and jealousy towards Mahabali. They requested Vishnu and HE acceded to the request. He appeared as Vamana, in all glory. The King welcomed Vamana. He asked him what he wanted. The boy replied “just three feet of land”. Mahabali conceded the demand at once. The boy grew unassumingly huge and the whole of the land measured slightly less than three feet. For the rest, Vamana trod upon the head of Mahabali and pushed him to the infernal regions. Consequently, his subjects pleaded Vishnu. The Lord allowed the ex ruler to visit his subjects once a year. It was fixed as for Malayalam month Chingam on the asterism of Thiruvonam.
During the ten-day long festival, people decorate their houses to receive Mahabali. In the courtyard, they make floral carpets. They put on new clothes. It commences on the asterism Atham that falls ten days before Thiruvonam.
The children at dawn go in groups to collect flowers. On this pleasant errand, they sing songs, bring their colorful spoils, and decorate the floral carpet. Shoe flower, marigold, the yellow aster, scarlet button flower, common thakara (wild cassia), and oleander of all shades. The quickly perishable carpet is protected from direct Sun, by erecting a temporary roof, decorated with festoons.
The important part of the festival however begins on the eve of Uthradam. The houses are spruced up. They make all arrangements for the sumptuous feast. Even the poorest of the poor celebrate Onam. The tenants of family holding the land present before the Karanavar the fruits of their labor-called Thirumulkaazhcha.

On the day of Thiruvonam, after the ritualistic bath a conical figure of Thrukkakkara Appan is made from clay. The belief is that the festival began at Thrukkakkara. In those days of splendour, the festival lasted for 28 days.
Flowers are decorated around the idol of Thrukkakkarappan. They visit the temples near by. The head of the family distribute new clothes to the family members, dependents and others.
What follows next is the feast. In front of an oil lit lamp, a fresh plantain leaf is spread and all dishes are served. This is for Lord Ganesa, to partake. The family members relish the sumptuous feast. There will be several varieties of curries, pickles, sweets, payasams.
Post lunch sessions are meant for fun and frolic. The sedate ones prefer cards or dice. The younger and the robust indulge in merry making. They swing mad. Some engage in Thalapandu (head ball). An extensive open space forms the playground. Equality in strength and not in number is the rule. Hence, there will be a difference in the number of members. Kayyankali or combats and archery are other games.
Mirth and hilarity mark the life of the female members. The younger ones decked in their gayest and finest attire, wearing jewels spend the days in dancing and singing. It continues until the shades of evening fall and the festivals conclude. On the Chathayam day, at the auspicious hour the image of Thrukkakkarayappan is removed.
Recently, with the breaking up of the joint family system and the onslaught of Visual media, the celebration has attained different color. Children no more enjoy the thrill of gathering flowers. The market is flooded with flowers from Thovaalai and Madurai. Women no more labor in the kitchen. Ready-made mixes are available. In some places, people depend on catering services. After the feast, it is time for a siesta. People celebrate Onam along with the TV Channels.

[tscii:8a231c4ca6]dear readers,
i am suppose to post this on 17th of August -on the malayalam new year day. i am 10 days late  and it is better late than never. read on
Every day All India Radio commences its morning broadcast by announcing the day’s dates with years!
Many Dates and Years for a single day? Yes, of course because we follow different calendars set in different Eras introduced over a period. Each one had an event associated with it. Thus, Eras is in fact are the commemoration of such events.
Saka Era introduced in 78AD by King Saalivaahana, named this Era after his Saka subjects, for instance.
Keralites follow Kollam Aandu/Kollavarsham/Kollam Era-the New Year (1183) of which falls on 17 August this year.
As every era started in commemoration of some great event in history, it is natural that we desire to know the event behind the Kollam Era, introduced in 825 AD. There are plenty of myths and stories related to this.

Shungoonny Menon the author of “History of Travancore” says, “In the Kali year 3926 (825AD) when Udaya Marthanda Varma was residing in Kollam, he convened a special meeting of all learned men of Kerala, with the object of introducing a new Era. After making some astronomical researches, and calculating the solar movements, throughout the 12 zodiacs and counting scientifically the number of days occupied in this revolution every month, it was resolved to adopt the new Era from the first of Chingam of that year (15 August 825) as Kollam year one, and to call it the solar calendar.” The new Era christened Kollam Aandu/Kollavarsham/Kollam Era as the venue of the summit was at Kollam.

There are two Kollams. One near Thiruvananthapuram, which was once a great seaport and the other, was a township in Malabar. It was the Kollam in Travancore, which lent its name to the new Era. Port Kollam was a flourishing city and an international centre of trade and commerce while its northern counterpart was obscure.

Records available in the Padmanabha Swami Temple show that, the installation of the idol of Sri Krishna (Thiruvambadi) was held on the fifth day of the new Era (05-01-01 KE), in the presence of all the royal family members of Venad. This day also marked the introduction of the rescheduled Temple Calendar. Since then, this revised calendar is basis of reckoning time to structure the system feasts and fasts and other religious ceremonies.

According to one theory, in 822 AD, invading sea destroyed Kollam. It took three years to rebuild the city. This re founding of Kollam resulted in the starting of an Era called Kollam Era.

The Kollam summit chose Chingam as the first month in preference to Mesha (Medam) because of the vernal equinox –Vishu-which had by that time (1 kollam era) already moved to Meena rasi(the constellation Pisces) by the slow process of precession of the equinoxes. Simha is the Suns own house-and hence it is considered appropriate to begin Solar Year-in which the days, the months, the two ayanas and the whole year are related to the Sun’s apparent movements in the sky.

However, the people of north Kerala observed New Year in the month of Kanni. The belief is that the news of the birth of Kollam Era took one month to reach north Kerala. :o
(only one month to travel from kollam to malabar in 825 AD)
The Chera, the Pandya and the Chola inscriptions reveal that this Era was prevalent in the regions of Kerala Tiruneveli and Madurai.

‘The promulgations by Sankaracharya the great Vedantist of the 64 rules known as Anaacharams, is reason for commencing Kollam Era’ is another reason attributed to it. One of the Anaacharams forbids the performance of Sati, which might well have proved revolutionary and epoch-making commandment worthy of commemorating an Era. However, some researchers say he died before 825 AD.

Yet another belief is that as the Nampoothiris of Kerala were migrants from Kashmir. They adapted the Saptarshi Era (the calendar of which began with Mesha) of Kashmir Calendar. It is on the Saptarshi year 3900 the Kollam summit convened.

Thus August 17, 2007 corresponds to Kollam Aandu 1183, Chingam1; Saka Varsham 1929, Sravanam 1; and Hijara 1427 Shahaban 3. It is this variety that makes India a unique place.
(i would like to hear other stories related to the birth of any era-)

[tscii:39e1b7162f]SMAARTHA VICHAARAM: -(S V)
Vichaaram = Caste trial
Smaarthan= Vedic Judge
SV was the court of enquiry into allegation for the transgression of the rules of chastity by the Nampoothiri women. I do not know exactly when the last SV was held.
Here is an account of the traditional age-old custom.
Chastity is accounted as the highest of all virtues and violation resulted in austerization from the family and the community.
Nampoothiri community was ranked high. They follow patrilineal system. There are four levels of caste council of Nampoothiris-namely 1. Village 2. Graamam 3. Territory and 4. State. They were presided espectively by Akakkoymma, graamam, vaidikans and meemamsa.
How is SV conducted?
Rajas of Chirakkal, Rajas of Kottayam, Zamorin of Calicut, Kochi Raja and Travancore Raja were the arbitrators of the Nampothiris of North Malabar, South Malabar, Calicut, Kochi and Travancore respectively. The council consisits of Smaarthan, Vaidikan, Meemamsakan, Akakkoyma and Purakkoyma.
Vaidikans uphold the caste rules. Atleast one Vaidikan should accompany the Smaarthan to the place of trial. The trial was held at the defendant¢s illam.
The Smaarthan select two Meemamkasakas from the Gramam as soon as royal sanction was obtained.
They interpret Vedas whenever required during trial. The Purakkoyma was the representative of the Raja.
PHASES OF SMAARTHA VICHAARAM
1. DAASI VICHARAM
When the chastity of a Nampoothiri women was suspectyed, the head of the family inform the village council. The Daasi-the maid servant- of the Nampoothiri woman was interrogated and this is called Daasi Vichaaram.
2. Anchaam pura vilakkal
When convinced with DAASI¢s version, the accused was lodged in the Anchaampura the fifth house. It is built away from the illam. It was a kind temporary ban.
The Akkkoyma would submit the report to the Smarthan. It is referred to the ruler to conduct the SV.
In Travancore Rs 9/- had to be creditied to the treasury (Ref-Edgar Thurston-Castes and tribes of south India 1908 page 221) to conduct SV. The permission was called Neettu or thittooram.
3. Vichaaram
The Smaarthan ask the Daasi whether the Nampoothiri woman was present at the Anchaam pura. She should stand at the door of the Anchaam pura. The Smaarthan riddles questions through the Daasi. He should not talk to her directly or see her during the trail. THE Smaarthan should not ask irrelevant questions as well. If asked the Akakkoyma who watches the proceedings interferes. He never speaks but draws his thorthu (a long white cloth) from his shoulders. The Smaarthan corrects himself and the thorthu is put back.

The moment whne she confirms her guilt, and discloses the name of person with whom she had relation she is brought out of Anchaam pura, and cross examined time place and circumstance and personal identification. If she was found innocent, the entire council solicits her pardon. She is readmitted to her family.
The person accused by the woman is never permited to disprove the charges. Every co-defendant except the one who was the first to lead her astray had a right to be admitted to the boiling oil ordeal.
4. SWAROOPAM CHOLLAL-VERDICT ANNOUNCEMENT
The Raja pronounces the order for excommunication of the defendant woman. The Judges fixes a day. She is taken to a pond sae apart for this. A temporary ceiling is erected. The verdict is read out to the woman.
The Smmarthan would inform
a. The reason for lodging the culprit in the Anchaam pura,
b. dates, evidences of Daasi vichaaram
c. ROYAL SANCTION
d. members participated and
e. The evidences in support. The Tamil Brahmin called Kutti Pattar would announce the seducers name. Soon the Tamil Brahmin jump into the Tank, followed by all Nampoothiri spectators.
The defendant conceals herself by the palm leaf umbrella. The Daasi grabs and destroys it. Nampoothiri woman henceforth becomes an outcaste. She is called SAADHANAM (THING) and not Antharjajam (Nampoothiri women). She is lodged in the outskirts of the locality.
5.UDAKA VICHCHEDAM
Through this act, the right of the kin of the woman to perform obsequies is severed. Last right of the Nampoothiri woman is performed. It is performed at night.
6. Suddha bhojanam
A feast is conduct after the Nampoothiri woman is austerized.
7. Kaala vichaaram
If children were born to her by her legal husband, after she had committed adultery the children of her paramours wives had to undergo expensive expiratory rite. They are not re admitted but degraded to lower castes like Chaakyar and Nambiars. Even today many Chaakyars and Nambiars trace their descent from Nampoothiris.

She seats in a small round hut made of coconut frond specially erected for the purpose. All the eligible men armed with bamboo poles dance round the hut. Occasionally they thrust the poles through the fronds. The father of the bride sits at a little distance, beating tom-tom. The girl seizes one of the poles and the man holding the pole is chosen as the groom!

The great deal:-
Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan (V S) {Achu Ammavan = Achu uncle} never thought that things will twist and turn like this.
Poor Achu Ammavan!
On the Annual meeting of the Kerala working journalists union he addressed the scribes “you must come forward to expose the activities of Land mafia”
Aha! T U Kuruvila the Revenue minister resigned due to his nexus with land mafia.
Now the forest minister is facing the same threat in connection with the land purchased for I S R O.
The land is purchased for a low price and is sold at a very high price. The dealer fix the sale first and then he will be on the look out for the land.
The story is like this:-
A dealer sells ecologically sensitive land for ISRO (for the proposed space institute).
The land is encroached by people and forests are cleared. The need of the hour is to confiscate the land, replant trees, and make it a lush green.
In 2001, the govt issued an ordinance and since then it is the govt’s land. It is this very land that Xavi Mano Mathew bought from Birla and sold it for ISRO.
ISRO SENT A COMMUNICATION TO THE GOVT SEKING LAND FOR THE INSTITUTE by post.
Action on this communication was taken after a week. With “put up”, the letter “trickled” down and reached the collector who replied “no land available.”
Thus, I S R O decided to purchase land from Xavi Mano Mathew. Revenue and labour ministers held discussion with Xavi.
With in 24 hours, 707 acres of land was scrutinized by DFO and gave green signal to Xavi.
Journalists sensed it and the cat is out of the bag now.
Meanwhile without knowing the C M the chief secretary gave sanction to build a helipad (one crore budget) at the land of controversy. “Revenue FINANCE AND LAW” ministries say they are “unaware” of this construction of helipad.
If things go like this one-day secretariat too will be sold without the knowledge of ministers.
Yesterday our V S said in the press meet-“forest minister is a POZHAN” (POZHAN MEANS USELESS).
The forest minister represents CPI one of the coalition parties. The party chief Ismail expressed his protest today

The nature and attitude of some doctors and nurses are very bad indeed. They will not give proper answers.
How can one expect, especially these days when the parents wants their childen to become a doctors- snubbing their other areas of interests.
there is one more dimension. There are children who want to become doctors just because of the glamour of the porfession. Parents "buy" seats for them.
I am concerned about the future of the medical profession. Private hospitals are mushrooming. i am afriad. Now medical profession is no more a service. it has become a business.

The currency cleanser consists of two tiny aluminum rods with brown paper rolled over them. Place the soiled note on the upper rod and turn the lever. Lo! Brown paper “sucks” the dirt and now the note is mint fresh! :o

What is the secret?
It is nothing but magic! Explains Sreedevi. We have already rolled in fresh notes and what you are getting is the note you have inserted. Sreedevi’s “innovations” are a regular feature at the science exhibitions.

Crimson Gold and Offside too are his other movies which highlighted how Iranian women are forbidden from enjoying the social life. Offside is the story of six Iranian women who wanted to play football. The film was due to be released a few days before the world cup 2006 at Germany. The government banned the film.

Anil Kapoor
Anil came to Thiruvananthapuram on the screening of his film “Gandhi my Father”. The film dwelled deep into the relationship between the Gandhi and his son Harilal Gandhi. It is a metaphor of an Indian family. It si not only he story about the father and the son but also about Kasturba who is torn between them. Gandhi a role model for others to emulate could not save his own son. The theme is contemporary. His failure on the personal front is not a yard stick to judge his greatness.

when the issue was brought to the notice of the leader M M Lawrence State general secretary CITU,remarked thus "such things do happen do not link such instances with strike-we never planned to organized strike-presuming that the child would die.this is a sheer coincidence. the media is highlghting such instances just to turn the public against strike..flights were delayed...at certain places it didn't took off..buses were delayed--blaming the agitation and the agitators is not fair"
