I think, already dailythanthi has published the same article series. Now they started for second time. Needless to say, Ilaiyaraja is one of commercial elements/icons of TN and he will be helpful to increase the circulation.

Cinema Express too already published IR's [bThirulaga Varalaaru[/b] in more than 10 issue. I guess the author was Vaamanan.

Sanjeevi,
May be there was a series in thanthi before. This seems to have some updates (at least it mentions his 31st year in TF industry)...who knows, there could be some recent interviews / scoops added (while there may not be much to add in the historical info, which got reported in many forms in many mags for years)...

Ram K,
Once you get to the dailythanthi page via the link provided above, you can click on the icon with the title "மாநிலச்செய்திகள்" on the top of the page (the right most icon).

That'll give you a list of the current day's state news articles. You'll be able to choose upto a week old by selecting the issue date...

BTW, there're only 2 articles on IR series so far and both links are in this thread...

Though i had known Raaja was associated with Communist party this part gives us more info on that. hope it will give us more insight upon the party's influence on music and people in his formative years in the forthcoming articles.
He also said about 'communist party' in the jayakanthan felicitation function couple of years ago, that though he was not a communist he was there due to music and Paavalar and also the party had given him a wide worldly knowledge and perception. Its those 20,000+ musical performances that he was involved with his brother which should have given an immense learning aswelas thirst towards learning more of it IMHO.

On a lighter side did the Adhigari liked Raaja's song or did he not want him to sing anymore is a ?

An interesting write-up on GKV, with some song links.

As confirmed by the above article, IR didn't do `thEn sindhudhE vAnam'. However, I remember reading in another article, may be on Muthulingam, that IR helped compose the folk number 'thanjAvooru seemaiyilE' in the same movie 'ponnukku thanga manasu'...

IR comes across as hyper sensitive and also childish which sometimes is annoying . So what personal grouse led IR not to use SPB for almost a decade? Atleast SPB's golden singing could have given the much needed respite from the weak tunes and weaker orchestration he dishes out these days.

ganspb
16th June 2007, 03:58 AM
IR gave most of the songs to SPB and KJY in the 80s, and latter when a new trend by ARR emerged of mixing multiple singers instead of the montous popular singers it became a hit. People then started criticized IR for not giving chance to others except SPB and KJY.Now even if we assume that he got that corrected and followed the Trend created by ARR by giving chance to all then also he is criticised.

Idhu Dhan Ulagam.

 Oh! adhunaala thaan IR oru paattukku kooda SPB-ya use paNNaalayO. cha enna koduma saravanan idhu munnaala pOnaalum kadikkaraa(i)nga pinnaala vandhaalum udhaikkara(i)nga. :)

it is fact IR is eccentric and as thumburu said childish. Could be annoying and irritating for many. no need to sugar coat it. Definitely there were a sizeable amount of songs wherein we all know IR could have used SPB and/or Chitra. I feel voice of KJY and to some extent voice of SJ has shown old age so no issues in not using KJY. But I feel a careful selection of song could have easily handed to SJ. But one nice thing is nowadays IR seems to have realised his mistake of overuse of Bhava and is relying on far better voice Shreya Goshal.

Despite all these short comings wherein I dont have problem in admitting IR's behaviour, I yearn for his music. Cheeni Kum is a fodder for my hunger. A beautiful presentation from IR. Wonderful non-jarring synth orchestration by IR. Thanks to Balki. hmm...indha IR-Balki association innamum eththanai naaLO :(

IR-kooda ippa sEra pOradhaa pEsapadura drained down, yester-year greats-naala IR will not be dishing out even a cheeni kum. This include, BR, KB, BM (no seperation here but just a mentioning).

hmm...my wish list includes, in the top, a Hamsadhwani/Mohanam/Hindolam duet by Chitra and Shreya with some meaningful lyrics by Thamarai, with rich vintage IR kind of non-synth mind blowing orchestration. Nadakkuma :(

sari thinnai kizhavan maadhiri naan pulambi enna payan. let me rewind and listen to cheeni kum from MIL once again.

I'm not sure which AVM movie IR did prior to murattukkALai...actually, they weren't producing for a while and murattukkALai was after a reasonable gap...

I used to think that 'kEttELE ingE' was IR's 2nd biggest hit...now I know there had been many prior to that...may be during those radio days, i.e. even after annakkiLi, not many listeners cared about who the MD was...probably 'poovizhi vAsalil yAradi vandhadhu' got registered as a Shivaji song at that time and later recognized and identified more with IR than Shivaji...

Though IR's name became well known with annakkiLi, it looks like the industry took time to recognize the talent...and so were the average listeners...they didn't wait biting their nails for next release of IR...all that they cared those days was whether the song was good or bad...no hyped publicity for music...(for that matter, even movies - save a few from MGR, rarely a film had too much pre-release hype, so there had to be some measure of merit if the movie collected money at BO)...

I think Bhagyaraj did such acts on purpose, just to amuse people and catch attention...I really love his comic sense...he's an extremely brilliant character, with a strong sense of humor. Remember the climax of andha 7 nAtkaL...with some tense things going on, he'll make a casual remark about "beedi" which was hilarious...

After watching SB during college days when it got released, after >20 years, I watched it again on DVD a few days back...what a great movie, incomparable! I still remember me not liking the movie much when released...in fact when MSV's once d-i-l (adhu dhAnga, Sulakshana) chases her out, all of us roared 'pOdee' in the theater...now I realise how much immature we were at that time...

One of the best ever performances by any actress in TF...those days I questioned why they gave her NA, now I 200% agree with them...pAdaRiyEn oru pAttu scene mattum pOdhum...

OK, r_f, I'll expand the abbreviations below; however, to totally understand you should have watched sindhubhairavi and must remember at least the overall story, if not scene by scene...

MSV : M S Viswanathan avargaL, the evergreen mellisai mannar

d-i-l : daughter in law, b-i-l : brother in law etc.
(Actress Sulakshana was married to MSV's son who used to be a film producer, at some point of time...I think they got divorced...don't know for sure...she plays the role of the wife of the ace musician JKB, with name "Bhairavi" in this film...Suhasini plays "Sindhu" with whom JKB will have an extra-marital affair...Sivakumar gave a stellar performance as JKB, probably his career best)

NA : national award, I think Suhasini got NA for SindhuBhairavi along with IR, KJY and KSC...

Coming to the Raja-KB tussle....vasanth had captured some of it beautifully in poovellAm kEttuppAr. Vijaykumar's character however, is a mix of MSV & Raja as the base of the story is MSV-TKR fight where as the TKR becoming independent is driven by Raja-KB fight.

Seriously, IR was probably the first MD in south (I'm not sure about Bolly) to dictate terms to businessmen...he started all the things that ARR and others have cashed upon later, like royalty to musicians, share of audio rights for artists etc. We can even call him some kind of a pioneer in ensuring musicians getting something for their IP rights in TN...
(After all these things, some people today talk about IR not being a "professional" musician...)

As per Manisekaran's write-ups, TMS has insulted IR many times (one exapmle: in Malayasia). Here IR has praised TMS in this series and it is a proof that IR is getting maturity???. And I have one question. has IR blammed TMS ever?

PS : Even today, some hardcore MSV supporters don't give respect to IR. For instance, LRE in addition with TMS. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes !

TMS has insulted IR many times though I have never seen IR doing it back to TMS.

I do not think IR bad mouths anybody. He is just frank about his ideas . For example he did call the current trend as "Plastic music", "pop corn" etc, which were taken as pointing to ARR. But this is certainly not bad mouthing people, like calling them fools etc. IR is always mature in this sense :)

But TMS inspite of his great talent and career, was a fuming personality ( vayatherichal ).
Last time he was on Jaya TV , his comment was " MSV was a person who will extract the best out of a singer. Aanaal sila muttaalgal (?) avargalin harmonium pettiyil enna varugiradho adhaiyellaam nammai paada solvaargal"

On the other hand, LRE was a "midhappu" party. She really did not realize that IR was going to really rule the film music world. When IR approached her for Annakkili, she just rejected him saying "Indha pattikaataan ellaam music pottu naan adhukku paadanumaa ?" IR has told this in one of his old interviews to AIR.

Adhu dhaan IR LRE-kku aappu vaithaar. She was forced to confine herself to Mariamman songs later.

Since only P.S and S.J were open to new talents, they survived with IR.

Folks i think Raghavender is the guy who acted in Sindhu Bhairavi as Suhasini step-father..( the guy who used to mimic like sivaji)
Also in SunTV paatuku paatu, Raghavender daugher(forgot her name) was the cheif guest...and GA said Raghavender and IR are good friends and they know each other for long time..
Maybe little contradicting though with the harmonium episode....
By the way i am eagerly waiting for tomorrow edition - why SJ cried??

buggle,

You should be right !

I also remember this guy in one of his interviews was all praise for MSV never mentioning IR's name. Innum kobam thaniyale polirukku :)

Also IR's description "thuru thuru - restless and noisy" suits this guy well.

Rajni's sahalai ( not machaan, I think ) is too young to be IR's friend in his earlier days.

i guess this is "Matha Unn koilil..". which Purushothaman mentioned in his interview once in Aaha FM during the Rajaangham program. Puru said not only SJ but the entire orchestra were on tears during the recording session..

raja_fan,
Also another interesting thing is Raghavender daughter sang her favorite number from Thai Mookambikai - Isaiarasi - that too the SJ portion alone..she said every time she hear this song she get goosebumps...
Only after that i did searched for this song in cooltoad and then burnt in CD..and she was true, even i get goosebumps(everytime)when SJ start "AMMAAAAAAAAAA"

what a feeling...

Vkrish,
you might be right about 'Maatha un koil' - let's wait another few hours we will come to know

I think IR followed professional ethics in every aspect . How concerned he was for that MSV-Sridhar combo. then !
And his assessment of the thankless tamil cinema is also 100% correct ! He himself is facing what doubts he had when Sridhar approached him ! Sad.

1) will IR tell about his competitors such as SG, Chanrabose, TR, etc.?
2) will IR tell about his western mAnesEka gurus such as JS Bach, Mozart? When did he admire them?
3) will IR tell about his other language success stories such as kannada, malayalam, telugu and ofcourse hindi

Sanjeevi,
From the direction that the series has taken so far, following are my GUESSES for your questions:

1. Definitely nothing will be said about SG, CB and TR. At the max, he may say some nice things about KR, YSR, Bhavadharini as a MD and then, may be ARR, in that order:-) There may be possibility of mentioning his erstwhile troup members such as Vidyasagar and Deva...

2. I think he has already mentioned something about Bach (whom he always talks about...In the Kumudam 'sangeethakkanavugaL' series, there was even a photograph of him telling 'en nAdha dEvan Bach')...In addition, he has acknowledged them in his serious musical works as HTNI, NBW - with even the names of certain tracks marking a tribute to these WCM gurus. So there is no explicit need in this dhinathanthi series (primarily meant for TN tea shops) that he "admires them" , IMO:-))There could be references here and there, may be more if he once again chooses to detail his Europe trip.

3. I'm sure other language ventures will be included (it won't be complete without sAgara sangamam aka salangai oli, that got him the 1st NA and the Telugu original of 'unnAl mudiyum thambi' that got his 3rd NA). However, with the direction it has been taking so far, there will be a lot of cleaning up of old gossips and correcting his image / explaining his behaviour etc (which is definitely good for him at this age)...So the opportunity for detailed accounts of his other language efforts -where he was relatively less controversial - is probably less (those are in any case decently chronicled in the media)...

Again these're my guesses, who knows, this man is always full of surprises:-)

Having made those guesses, I have a couple of questions too:

1. Will he tell about what compelled him to rework BoneyM's Sunny for Panju, his mentor, for the film Priya?

2. While he talks a lot about creating tunes of his own -not even happy about SPB making fun of him with some MSV numbers that used the same scale as his new tune, will he explain why he simply copied a Hindi song into 'kanavu kANum vAzhkai yAvum', that too for a director like BM?

3. Which was recorded first - 'sO gayA' or 'kELadi, kaNmaNi'...if his is later, what compelled him to reuse a tune of L-P (who had a somewhat copy cat reputation...ofcourse not Anu Malik levels)...

4. Also about his recycles - like 'kuyilukkuppam' into 'thooLiyilE' etc...why they were done that way...

Despite all his "irritable" behaviour to others in the film field (or in the music production in general, like the TbI venture), I haven't seen IR openly throwing mud on any individual in the press - except the only instance where he gave an interview to Junior Vikatan about the director of Periyar (that too probably because of the possible political / legal consequences like what happened to Khushboo / Suhasini etc.) And the Periyar crew never countered him, silently acknowledging the truth in his statements.

There would have been references like 'kuradunukku eppadi ovvoru thuLiyilum un mugham theriyum - enna pAttu ezhudhaRAnga'...'after Kannadasan nalla kavidhai illai' ...'ennidaththil varum eththanaiyO kuppaikaLukku isai amaiththukkoduththirukkiREn' etc, but still they were told as opinions in general without washing dirty linen in public...

I haven't read his books, but I doubt whether anywhere he would have cited episodes where someone doublecrossed him / ditched him / dumped him etc.

Even in this series, so far, he has been mostly acknowledging his own shortcomings -albeit with pride- and by and large not tarnishing the reputations of other personalities...hopefully it will continue in that way and he won't do any VM'ish act! (That reference to BR-Kamal by VM is such a childish -or may be cunning / crooked- thing to do in a popular magazine like Kumudam)...

VM : why, what happened?

VM did not touch Kamal after this incidents for long time.

App,
The answer for your Qn2 was given by BM himself in an interview, when copying allegations were made. He said he insisted on using the same tune as "kasme vade" in neengaL kEttavai.

Another rumor that was popular around that time was Raja and K-A agreed to use each other's tune for "neele nile ambar (iLaya nila)" and "kasme vade (kanavu...)"

One statistical error here - 'niRam mARAdha pookkaL' was BR's 5th movie, and not the 4th...the 4th one was 'puthiya vArppugaL'...IR probably will definitely mention about 'thamthana namdhana thALam varum'...will have to wait and see...

Nice to read his appreciation for Sivaji...and 'iLamai enum poongAtRu' / 'engengO sellum en eNNangaL'...

I think IR's will be the longest of dhinathanthi series...one reason is his sheer volume of movies, with possible competition only from Manorama...but Achchi may not have significant contribution in many of them, and may not have so much of adventures...another reason could be 'ethai solvadhu, edhai viduvadhu?'...(there could be a third reason...vENdam, sonnAl udambukku nalladhu illai:-)

There is a archived radio programme on SPB in the above link.

Heard the supposedly first song of SPB for IR. "Naan pesa vandhen.." from Paalootti valartha kili.

Surprisingly it sounded very much MSV or V.Kumar style.

BTW the series suddenly jumping to national awards means some 4-5 years in between will be not accounted :(

I have this gut feeling that IR will not have much to say about the mid and late 80s, for that was when he was awfully busy, and may not remember as much as from the 1970s, when he was not doing that many movies and hence remembers everything!

Follow these steps

1. http://dailythanthi.com/
2. Press 'Enter' icon in the screen (may not come sometimes)
3. you can see 'Maanila Seithigal' tab on top, click that.
4. You can see the link either at the top most or at the bottom (probably the last link) in that page

Hope you can get it now.... :)

For me it sounds like Salil Choudry. especially the song "Naan ennum pozuthu" from Aziyaatha kolankal . I think Ilaiyaraja might have worked for Salil Choudry eventhough he became successive music director in his very first movie. But MSV touch also is there. oru velai , may be its an experimentation by IR to exactly identify his own unique style? :P

Also V.kumar is heavily inspired by Salil Choudry. I think Salil choudry is the next to MSV , role model for many music dirctors around 70's - Ilaiyaraja, V.kumar .........etc

I can trace "Ennodu paatu paadunkal (udhya geetham-1986)" song bits in this "Naan ennum pozuthu" by Salil Choudry

Anyhow, Palooti valartha kili song is really a treasure, very fresh even now! Guitar chords and bass is amazing.

I doudt, there is counterpoint by Guitar or piano in starting pallavi?

Simply breezing!

I think Salil choudry is the only music director who doesn't have regional barriers in indian music history till now, though i haven't heard much of his hindi songs. but heard some Tamil and malayalam songs. They were good. But he lacks good orchestration as compared to ilaiyaraja.

Thats why Balamurali krishnan always saying " If there is only one Authority for Orchestration, then it will be Ilaiyaraja only"

No wonder if IR had his inspirations from him 8-)

smss - i dont think IR has been inspired by SC - the first time I had met IR (in person), he was all awe while speaking about MSV, Kamal, Madan Mohan, SD Burman, John Williams etc - while speaking about SC, he said "Priya recording podhu, mookkil viralai vaithhu vedikkai paarthhu vittu ponaar" - that does not sound like any inspiration!

irir123

my observation: never once does IR mention that he was desperate/badly wanted to compose music for movies - it all JUST HAPPENED! even his first movie ANNAKILI was OFFERED to him and he didnt ask for a chance to work/compose - if not for movies, he would have been quite happy learning music and playing as and when he pleased! that completely explains why he doesnt give/care a damn to anyone for anything

Salil Choudhry had done good job in Madhumathi, Chemmeen and Anand etc. But apart from the hits, I do not think his music has any researchable or experimental elements like IR's music.

More importantly, Salil never had versatality in his compositions. He had only few patterns of tunes like present day HJ that he rotated again and again from Hindi to Malayalam and back.

Itz really amazing as to how could he manage to create an everlasting tune, write notes for orchestra, get the apt lyrics, rehearse and finish off the recordings, all in matter of few hours..
for great songs such as Vaan megangale, illamai ennum poongatru..etc. When i recollect the first and second interludes of vaan megangale, this itself looks like a long saranam !!

At one instance he said that he composed all five songs in a day...
i often amaze at his composing speed when going through these articles, and wonder comparing to this age scenarios..

Yes SC didn't make big as ilaiyaraja did quite easily. IR mentions all about MSV,kamal....etc often, but that song is clear inspiration from SC's "Naan ennum pozuthu".

And another thing,

common man, the man we are inspiring need not be a big icon! From whom we are inspiring is not imp. What we are inspiring is important

Its getting the idea thats all.

The same song is also inspired for udaya getham song And for V.kumar ---- > Unnidam mayankukiren etc.

Of coursr MSV is the real role model for many, Thats why i mentioned SC as next to MSV.

According to me, the path ilaiyaraja followed is exactly the SC's

Also SC is not inferior to MSV or SDB. Songs of MSV,SC,SDB will seem very simple at first listening. But if you look in depth, their tunes will be more complicated.

Salilda's music defies classifications and never follows a predictable format. His songs charm the listener with a first feeling of simplicity. But when you try to sing it; you realise the unusual musical twining and the complex composition. It is impossible to think of his tunes without accompaniments. The skilful use of obligato, the counter melody flowing around the main melody, is an unfailing attraction of his music.

I am sorry!

I never heard "Music Harmony" in any other MD's in india before Salil choudry and of course Ilaiyaraja!

smss: I never denied the stature of SC as a creative composer - he is an icon in his own way! but IMHO, IR was not inspired by SC

To my knowledge, this was spoken by Director Muthuraman at IR's JayaTV concert, Ilayaraja's ambition was to be a film music director.

Ok irir123,

Its nice to see the great characteristics of IR. His speech will end the mouths talking -he is an arrogant. Some of the people around him were indeed arrogant.

I already told in some tfm thread, that Many of ilaiyaraja's geniusness were not recognised  . The reason also i mentioned- He was simply far ahead of his times.

He mentioned about mediocre/rare songs very proudly. So, everything is music for him. We people separates good or bad or pleasure tune or mediocre tune. But for him all are simply notes/swaras.

And I am going to start a thread about his musical elements, I welcome all of you to participate.

I believe Dhinathandhi would have come in to agreement with IR for a fixed number of episodes only.
Then they would interview IR , record everything and then give us the edited version.

We as IR fans may be interested in each and every detail, but if you look from business perspective the series would become too familiar if it goes like a Sindbad :)

But as I expected, IR clearly avoided any mention about VM.
After Sindu Bairavi, they never worked together. So IR has cleverly masked his relationships with Vairamuthu.

rs,
Unfortunately, we have heard a lot from others in the past but very less from IR and that's why my enthu is kind of dampened...not that the series itself will be of less quality, it will definitely be a worthy read...but just won't be as interesting as those "IR versions" of stories, which will definitely be missed...It's onething to read what KB, KJY , Suhasini, Sivakumar or KSC has to say about sindhubhairavi...but altogether a different thing to hear from IR about 'pAdaRiyEn'...

Again, for now, it's only a guess that thanthi ran out of IR's appointment...who knows, they may still have some of his views...

Yesterday I was listening to 9-11 PM Raajaangham in Aahaa FM.

Bhagyaraj spoke about how he tried to independently score music for his own films ( should be films like "Idhu namma aalu" etc ) and then gave up realizing that it will take years for him to learn music properly. Also his family asked him to stop try music.

Then when he went back to meet IR, in his own words " Naan Rajavai paarkka ponen. Mudhalla konjam kobamaa serious-aa irundhaar. Apparam naan avar kitte sonnen :'AVM Saravanan sir solvaaru : Raja thaan No.1 . Avarukku aduthu 2,3,4 kooda yaarume kidayaadhu'nu. Naan no.5-aa irukkalaamnu nenaichu thaan try panninen. Adhellaam sari aagaadhunnu ippo unga kitte thirumbi vandhutten' . Apparam Raajaa sirichittu kadhai ketkka arambichittaaru. Andha padam thaan Raasukkutti."

This shows that IR would never like people who worked with him to go other ways ( even if they actually did not go to any other MD ) and then come back to him. :)

raja_fan,

i have seen this happen only to Bhagyaraj whererein he was shuttling between composers and have managed to come back to Raja too :) he did many movies like Darling*3, mounageethangal, antha 7 naatkal, enga chinna rasa, sundaragandam etc., with other composers.

IR's open admittance that BM and MR are the only directors who stuck to the story narrated to him, is quite interesting and revealing - but IR's (in his own words "ketta gunam") habit of not doing music for someone who says he wont make the movie without his music, is IMHO very very very weird!! I just cannot undergo these most enigmatic, puzzling facets of this genius!

Also I remember one thing now after reading that IR refused "Sigaram" even after begging of the director.

In Sigaram, Nizhalgal Ravi is a MD who is very jealous of SPB ( hero and also MD ). Nizhalgal Ravi's name is Gnanam.

Ravi will repeatedly tell a dialogue something like this "Avan (SPB) chance ellaam enakku varanum. Padathoda title-a 'Isai Gnanam'-nu varanum"

Now I understand what the director was hinting at :)

raja_fan: there is another thing I dont understand and I cant accept even if it comes from IR! : that he declined working on the tamil version of 'teesri manzil' only coz he felt he could not match RDB's output in TM!! that coming from IR sounds so hollow! knowing very well what he is capable of, also knowing what he knows of his own composing limits, I find it hard to believe that he refused that movie coz of THIS reason cited by him!!

also, can anyone give the name of that movie, which was Teesri manzil's remake in Tamil featuring Kamal and Sreedevi ?

irir123
19th July 2007, 01:21 AM
i think at least in this case of the tamil version of TM, IR is hiding something else and giving something else as the reason!
