I think perumthalaivar entered the assembly from Nagercoil after that. (KamaRaj film had few scenes on this). In that film, Rajaji to Sreenivasan 'Gandhi ya konnathu kooda bullet thaan. athukkaga atha vachukida mudiyuma' :lol: (something ||| to this)

I think perumthalaivar entered the assembly from Nagercoil after that. (KamaRaj film had few scenes on this).

Parliment ah ? I thought it was assembly by election. I might have missed the details. My pick was : 'appachi yoda kodiya sattaila kuthatheenga, en nenjila kuthunga' :)

Yeah! such a Bakthi on Perunthalaivar can be seen even now in Nagercoil..

Kamarajar never contested for TN assembly after that defeat ..He went to national politics ..He became Nagercoil MP.

Selva,

What happened in Malaysia was never witnessed in our 51 years in history. Okay, in 1963 Singapore left the country, that was big. But here we witnessed people's power, namely tremendous influence from the Malaysian born Indians. And this is not the first time MGRs songs were used for political reason. The late political leader, MG. Pandithan, used the songs to woo lower class Malaysian Indians during the late eighties and early nineties, when he was part of the opposition pact. Unfortunately, he reverted and joined the ruling party, and in an embarassing moment (to his supporters) he used MGR song to praise one of the ruling party leaders. Nov, do you remember which song?

So, yes, MGR songs are relevant. It did play a small part in this years election, and Pandithans small rise to power amongst the Indian folks.

அப்போது வானொலியில் "விருதுநகர் சட்டமன்ற தொகுதியில் காமராஜர் தோற்றுவிட்டார்" என்ற செய்தி அறிவிக்கப்பட்டதும் அண்ணா அதிர்ந்தார். அவர் கண்களில் நீர் துளிர்த்தது.

"தம்பீ... தவறு செய்துவிட்டோம். காமராஜரை எதிர்த்து நம்முடைய வேட்பாளரை நிறுத்தியது பெரும் தவறு" என்றார்.

மாற்றான் தோட்டத்து மல்லிகையிலும் மணத்தை உணர்ந்தவரல்லவா..!.

Gandhi's assassination is an event that would have stirred him too personally.He wouldn't have been able to refer to Gandhi's passing so casually.

Kennedy-ai konnadhu oru bullet thaan....adhukkAga adhai thookki vaicchu koNdaada mudiyumA ?

A rather harsh statement ! From a man who fostered the alliance against Kamaraj and in fact did not have the best relationship with him even when he was in Congress. Such is the respect Kamaraj commanded.

Many stars in Kollywood have tried to use the title MGR for their films, after the legendary superstar, but his inheritors have said no.

MGR’s fans say that nobody in Kollywood can fit into the late star's shoes as all of them are pretenders to the throne.

In Sivaji, there is a scene when the motta boss (Rajinikanth), first appears on the screen towards the climax and swishes his hand over his clean shaven head and says –“I'm MGR,” but quickly adds, M G Ravichandran.

The audiences in the theatre go into a frenzy at the mere mention of the word MGR. Now, our Ilayathalapathy Vijay's dad SA Chandrasekhar is making a film called Panthyam in which Nitin Sathya is a crazy fan of Vijay.

SAC has shown a scene where Nitin goes to meet Vijay (special appearance) on the location of a film MGR, directed by Perarasu who also appears in the film within the film. At least in the cameo, Vijay can fulfill his secret desire of having MGR as a title for an imaginary film!

Yes. MGR fights are a real treat to watch. And as sarna said, it gives you great excitement while watching it being real without any CG's as it is today. And that makes it very very special.

Especially when it is Silambam or Vaal(t)sandai, he just excels. The moment he gains access to the stick or sword - that's it. " Chakrayudhamaga suzhandradhu" endru Kalki oru term use pannuvar - this is the right example.

You must watch it in theatres (I've seen it during re-releases). The cool, calculated & rythmic steps he makes before the fight, will have the fans go berserk.

But, this scene should be enjoyed for the fight alone, whereas if you try to get on to the details, your'e gone. While making the steps, Vathiyar's veatti (dhoti) will begin to unwind (untwine ??). Immediately in the next shot, it will be in the normal position ???

Regarding Vathiyar's Kampu sandai I am reminded of two movies

1.Sakkaravarthi ThirumagaL ,MGR and Sando chinnapa thevar (who trained MGR in kampu sandai)

2.Kulebagalavi Kulebhagavali - not just one to one fight ,Vaathiyar kampu sandai against a set of people ,Azhagu .

when i was very young ,many times this movie screened in open air in our village ..After this fight ,few people go and tell the operator "ooi ,antha kampadiya suththi podum" and it will be repeated atleast 5 times.

Ithu kooda Chakkaravarthi thirumagaL or Thaaikku poin Thaaram ..bit confused..pls clarify :D

It should be Thaikku Pin Thaaram. Haven't seen Chakravarthi Thirumagal in full but being a historical story, chances of Silambu chandai are very less.

இதேபோல் படகோட்டி படத்தில் 'தரைமேல்பிறக்கவைத்தான்' பாடலின் தொகையறாவை எம்.ஜி.ஆர். பாடத்துவங்கும்போது, பக்கத்திலுள்ள் மரத்தூணில் 'தப்பு' மாட்டப்பட்டிருக்கும். அந்த இடத்தில் பெஞ்ச் எதுவும் இருக்காது. ஆனால் அடுத்த ஷாட்டில் திடீரென்று அந்த இடத்தில் ஒரு பெஞ்ச் ஒன்று இருக்க அதன்மீது உட்கார்ந்து, எம்.ஜி.ஆர். முழுப்பாடலையும் பாடுவார். (இந்தப்பாடல் அடிக்கடி தொலைக்காட்சிகளில் காட்டப்படுவதால் நீங்கள் பார்க்கலாம்).

Arasa kattalai :notworthy:

The screenplay was good and must say Manohar had great costumes compared to MT. May be - here MT is shown as a revolutionary and as a normal man who becomes the king. For most part of the movie, he has that bhavathar hair style. However, I was eagerly waiting to see him in one of my favorite getups (The one with the animal fur in his head). God - I was biting my nails for the 'Aayiram kaigal maraithu nindraalum song'. It came after more than 1.5 hours ?? One of the best mass numbers @ MGR songs. It does circulate good amount of new blood in our blood vessels. No wonder VM compared MGR songs to mother's milk. The lyrics were fantastic and the 'setting' maintained throughout the film for this song is awesome. The only negative was watching Saroja devi dancing :lol: She had tried though :)

Romance scenes between MT and SD were great as usual. Be it Vettaiyaadu Vilayaadu song or SD's looks after seeing MT before the starting of aayirak kaigal song. JJ - Nothing great. She is also there in the film. That's it.

Not to forget the dialogue that stands even today for most of the things - "Mudiyaathu enbathu en agaraathiyilae kidaiyaathu" :wink: 8-)

You have lot of actors in this. Manohar, Ashokan, Nambiyaar, Saroja Devi, "kavarchi kanni" (as per title card :lol: ) JJ . Saroja Devi's role had lot of scope. She had done a good job. Nambiyaar and Manohar come to my mind apart from MT and SD.

On the flip side, comedy was crap. :x Even Nagesh couldn't do anything in those scenes. It was breaking the flow of the screenplay and tested the patience a LOT. Thank god - It got restricted to the first half.

Overall, one of those movies that appeal to me a LOT w.r.t to MT's image as a 'Kaaviya Naayagan' @ those heroes you found in epics

Watch "Marakka Mudiyuma", a serial about MT's life history in Makkal TV (Mon-Fri - 8.30 to 9 pm).

Y'day's episode (I missed first 10 or 15 min.) was about how MT was gradually recovering after he got shot in the throat by MRR. The person who acted as MT was a good choice. As part of recuperation, MT puts a few pebble stones in his mouth and practices to speak. Meanwhile director Neelakandan calls in and asks about the shooting of Kaavalkaaran film which was stuck in the middle. MGR assures him that he will do the dubbing later and asks him to proceed with the shooting. He gets perturbed when the director suggests that they do the dubbing with another artiste.

They also showed MRR in prison with his usual banters. Radha Ravi speaks for the artiste who plays MRR's character.

Very informative & interesting. Don't miss it.

The best line in this song will come in the 3rd stanza I think... "Nallavar Latchiyam Velvathu Nichayam"... Totally inspirational... I think Joe this line in his Sig for a while too! :P

A perfect example of how to use punch line or dialogue. No other star had perfected this, IMO. The charanam would start like this,

கண்ணை மறைக்கின்ற காலம் வரும்போது
தர்மம் வெளியேறலாம்

The film was released on Nov 7th,1974. Here he cleverly talks about the incidents that took place two years before that (ie) Oct 1972 and see without naming himself (no "I" or "me" here), he makes the audience understand that தர்மம் stands for him (MGR). In the next line he goes further and sings

தர்மம் அரசாளும் தருணம் வரும்போது
தவறு வெளியேறலாம்

See how confident he is. He is sure that தர்மம் (ie) he is going to rule and தவறு (you know who) will go out. Next line he affirms

நல்லவர் லட்சியம்
வெல்வது நிச்சயம்

He assures that his mission will succeed because he belongs to category Nallavan and again he goes humble and says that it is not he who said this but

அண்ணா அன்று சொன்னார்; என்றும்
அதுதான் சத்தியம்.

Here the word அண்ணா is useful in two ways. One refers to cinema அண்ணா (Sahasaranamam) and the other you know who.

Again when we go back to Pallavi, he very clearly makes it public what went wrong in 1972.

ஒரு தாய் வயிற்றில் வந்த உடன்பிறப்பில் முன்பு பிரிவிருந்தால்
பின்பு உறவு வரும்

நல்ல மனிதருக்கும் நன்றி மறந்தவர்க்கும் முன்பு உறவிருந்தால் பின்பு பிரிவு வரும்

How prophetic this man turned out to be! I may have differences of opinion about him on many issues but when it comes to his self confidence and his command over the cinema medium to put it across, he is bang on target. I admire him a lot for that.

Y'day, in " 1967 - January 12 Marakka Mudiyuma", MT meets MRR in court, face to face. MT wishes MRR with a vanakkam to which MRR says, " enna, sowkiyama irukkiya ? " in his own style. Episode ends there...to be continued today.

It's very interesting.

Ya... :x I could notice that during the end too. The climax fight looked lot more rushed up. They have cut most of the portions - I believe. I am not sure. Few dialogues were also cut half way. Nevertheless, worth a wait. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie as usual.

One of those movies that establishes why he is the best in playing kings more known as demi gods than human beings. His screen presence whenever he appears in the king getup is awesome. Dialogue delivery, GETHU, body language (esp during the malyutham scene) :clap:

I like the malyutham scene very much. 8-) Will write a detailed review if I get time

True. The scope was equal for all the characters. Despite the limited scope (if one considers other mgr films) , he rocked. Also, compared to other intros, one would see in a typical mgr film, this one was a normal one (Appearing as a poet singing praises of the statue).

Reg Mahendra pallavar, everything is conveyed through dialogues including the pullaloor fight.

I thought SSR was also good. His character (Thalpathy Paranjyothy) was totally opposite to how Kalki projected Parajyothy in "Sivagamiyin Sabatham".

In 'MakkaL TV's Marakka Mudiyumaa? serial, yesterday was the judgement day for the 'assacinitaion trial case' on MGR.

It was more real when the judge Latchumanan gave the reasons for the punishment for M.R.Radha as 7 years imprisonment.

The more pitiable charector on yesterday was M.R.Radha's wife, who was eagerly awaiting her husband's release. Poor lady did not know, that the case was very weak and MMR himself made several evidences against him. Advocate N.T.Vaanamamalai could have more 'dhil' to argue for such a very hopeless case.

On hearing the judgement M.G.Chakrapani and Appu were so happy, but on hearing it MGR was not happy.

இந்த நால்வரிலும், தன் கள்ள மற்ற சிரிப்பு ஒன்றினாலேயே நம் மனத்தை வசீகரித்துக் கொள்பவர் தாய்லாந்து நடிகையான மேட்டா ரூங்ராத்தான்! என்னமாய், எழில் சிந்தச் சிந்தச் சிரிக்கிறார் அந்தப் பெண்! உணர்ச்சிகளின் மெல்லிய ஓட்டங்களைக் கூடத் துல்லியமாக வெளிப்படுத்தும் அந்தப் பேதமை பொங்கும் முகத்தைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டே இருக்கலாம். எம்.ஜி. ஆரைக் காதலித்து உருகும் அவரு டைய காதல் முறிவை சட்டென்று சகோதர பாசத்துக்கு மாற்றியது தான் ரசிக்கும்படி இல்லை. காதலில் தோல்வி கண்டதும் அவரை உருக்கத்துடன் வெளியேற விட்டிருந்தால், அக்காட்சி நெகிழ்ச்சியூட்டும்படி அமைந் திருக்கும். அதை விட்டு, உடனடி யாக எம்.ஜி.ஆரை 'அண்ணா' என்றும், சந்திரகலாவை 'அண்ணி' என்றும் அவரை அழைக்க வைத் திருப்பது சிரிப்பைத்தான் வரவழைக்கிறது.

சந்திரகலாதான் மற்றவர்களுள் அதிக வாய்ப்புள்ள கதாநாயகி. அடக்கமும் உணர்ச்சியும் நிறைந்த நடிப்பு அவரிடமிருந்து வெளிப் படுகிறது.

லதாவுக்கு அழகான முகம். அவருடைய கச்சிதமான உட லமைப்புக்கு எடுப்பாக ஆடை அணிவித்து முதல் படத்திலேயே அவரை ரசிகர்களின் நெஞ்சில் பதிய வைத்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

மூத்த எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் காதலியாக வரும் மஞ்சுளாவுக்கு கண்ணீர் வடிக்கவும் சந்தர்ப்பம் கொடுத் திருக்கிறார்கள். அவருடைய நடிப்பைவிட, அசோகனால் கற்பழிக்கப்படும் காட்சியில் அவர் துடிக்கும் துடிப்புதான் ரசிகர்களை அதிகமாகக் கவருகிறது. 'தோரஹா' கெட்டது போங்கள்!

பிரதான வில்லன் அசோகன் தான் என்றாலும், நம் பிரியத் தைச் சம்பாதித்துக்கொள்கிற வில்லன் நம்பியார்தான். அவரு டைய பல்லழகே அழகு! எம்.ஜி.ஆர். எறிந்த பெட்டியை எடுத்துக் கொள்வதற்கு அவர் நப்பாசையுடன் தயங்கித் தயங்கி விழிப்பது சுவையூட்டும் காட்சி.

வெகு நாட்களுக்குப் பின் பழைய நாகேஷைப் பார்க்கி றோம். பல காட்சிகளில் அவர் வாய்விட்டுச் சிரிக்க வைக்கி றார். தாய்லாந்துப் பாணியில் குச்சிகளால் சாப்பிட முடியா மல் அவர் தவிக்கும் தவிப்பு 'ஓஹோ' என்று சிரிக்க வைக் கிறது. அவருக்கு ஒரு சபாஷ்!

வெளிப்புறக் காட்சிகளை யும் உட்புறக் காட்சிகளையும் பேதம் கண்டுபிடிக்கமுடியாத படி இணைத்து, படத்துக்குக் கம்பீர வடிவம் தந்திருப்பது பெரிய சிறப்பு! அதற்குத் துணையாக, பிரமிக்கத்தக்க வெளிப்புறக் காட்சிகளுக்கு ஈடு கொடுக்கும்படி பொருத்த மாக உட்புறக் காட்சிகளை அமைத்திருக்கும் (உதாரணம்: புத்தர் கோயில்) ஆர்ட் டைரக்டர் அங்கமுத்துவுக்கு ஒரு சபாஷ்!

'எக்ஸ்போ 70' காட்சிகளை, அங்கு நேரில் சென்றவர்கள் கூட இப்படித் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து ரசனையுடன் பார்த்திருப்பார் களா என்று சந்தேகப்படும்படி அற்புதமாகப் படமாக்கியிருக் கிறார்கள். அதே போல, தண்ணீருக்குள் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். - லதா சம்பந்தப்பட்ட பாலே காட்சியும், சறுக்கல் விளை யாட்டில் அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக் கும் க்ளைமாக்ஸ் காட்சியும்கூட மறக்க முடியாதவை. இப்படி காமிராவை அற்புதமாக இயக்கியிருக்கும் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் ராமமூர்த்திக்கு ஒரு சபாஷ்!

படம் வெளியாகுமுன்னே பிரபலமாகிவிட்டவை, இந்தப் படத்தின் பாடல்கள். 'சிரித்து வாழ வேண்டும்', 'பச்சைக்கிளி முத்துச்சரம்' பாடல்கள் எத்தனை தரம் கேட்டாலும் அலுக்காதவை. பாடல்களுக்கான இசையமைப்பையும் மிஞ்சி நிற்கிறது ரீ-ரிக்கார்டிங்! மெல்லிசை மன்னர் விசுவநாதனுக்கு ஒரு சபாஷ்!

hmm.. Saw the movie in parts. Couldn't see it fully though. They used to telecast at least one of his movies on Friday. Now, it has been changed. Watching them fully on Friday was easy. ThirudaathE had subtle MGR throughout the film :thumbsup:

And as usual, we have Saroja Devi as a silly village girl. :twisted:

The meaning for evergreen is epitomized by MGR.

It is many years since he passed away but he's still a number one draw at the box office. Last year, some of his films were restored and released. The crowds milled to theaters-just like 30 years ago!

In Hindi, many old films are being changed to color and released. One such film 'Mughal-e-Azam' did fabulously not only in India , but Pakistan too.

Following this example, Diamond Films plans to add color to many of old MGR films, enhance with DTS sound and graphics and release them. The first such restored film to be released all over Tamilnadu will be the 1973 release 'Ulagam Suttrum Vaaliban' that MGR directed and starred in.

The firm also plans to polish and release Sivaji films. It won't be surprising if these yester year superstars invade the box office!

This will be like a dream-come-true! I have always wondered how it will be to watch MGR/Sivaji movies in today's theatres with all the technology and ambience... These days, I wonder how it will be to even watch Rajini/Kamal movies from the 70s and 80s again in the big screens... 8-) 8-) 8-)
Even today when I watch old MGR movies like Rajakumari, Mallaikallan, Alibaba 40 thieves, Madurai Veeran etc., I really wish they had a better video/audio enhancements to that! 8-) I believe the DVD manufacturers/distributors of old movies do some level of audio/video enhancements but still it's not good enough! :)

A video/audio enhanced USV will be threat to watch! 8-)

The news also came in dinakaran yesterday. But 'Mughal-e-Azam' was a B & W film. Atha colour padam aakki release pannunaanga.. However, USV original itself is a colour film. hmm.. Let us see how they change it.

They can convert old, popular B & W movies into colour films and re-release them.

Happened to watch 10-15 minutes of Marakka mudiyumaa. Nadodi Mannan scenes :notworthy:

An info about Ponniyin Selvan movie. MGR was planning to take PS after Nadodi Mannan. MGR as Vanthiya Thevan and Gemini as Ponniyin selvan and still shown had MGR name in Direction :P

Heroines include Vaijayanthi Mala, Padmini, Saroja Devi :roll: and few more popular character artists :)

So sad the movie did not move further :cry: It could have definitely rocked for sure :wink:

And they shown a fight clipping of movie Raja Desingu. Dual action. The way the fight was picturised :2thumbsup: Technology avvalavaa illaatha kaalathulayae :thumbsup: No need to mention MGR was too good :P Talking about dual roles Nadodi mannan scenes where 2 MGR's come together also were too good. :thumbsup:

Last week I saw prog in MAKKAL TV. Even ENGA MAMA was planned by MGR but later gone to Sivaji. Like this so many movies.
Interesting news.

I can see so much confidence in MAKKAL THILAGAM When he was unable to speak well in KAVAL KARAN dubbing but declared EN PECHU EN RASIKARKU PURIYUM that shows immense confidence he has with his fans and they reciprocated with grand success. People will get confidence if they happen to read or watch MAKKAL THILAGAM history. Once again proved.

could be. But I still feel NTR was terrific in Karnan as Krishna. Also, I think he must have redefined the way these roles should be played. Hence, I feel it might not have suited MGR. People might have compared these two also. Getup wise - suit aagi irukkumaanu sure ah therla :)

one of the reasons why nadodi mannan was getting so much support from general audiance is the movie rights has not been given to any TV channels. People can only watch those movies in theatres. Nadodi mannan is one of the block buster movie from MGR and directed and produced by MGR. if people had chance to see the movie upteen times in TV, the movie would not be big hit at this time. Amd, top of that, young generation has curiosity to see what is MGR in big screen.

Yesterday there was a shock. The proud MGR pictures movies Adimai Pen and Ulagam sutrum vaaliban was telecasted in Raj TV without any prior advertisement. Even in papers there was no mention. While tuning the channels Adimai Pen ending was nearing by 3:30 PM and then by 5:30 they started telecasting USV. Something fishy. When these movies rights were given to Raj TV and how come they telecast such great and extremely popular movies without any informations :shock: :? Did they really got the rights or is was illegal telecast :roll: Informed hubbers can pour some details :roll:

Yesterday there was a shock. The proud MGR pictures movies Adimai Pen and Ulagam sutrum vaaliban was telecasted in Raj TV without any prior advertisement. Something fishy. When these movies rights were given to Raj TV and how come they telecast such great and extremely popular movies without any informations :shock: :? Did they really got the rights or is was illegal telecast :roll: Informed hubbers can pour some details :roll:

Yeah, even I too saw that & was shocked. I own DVD's of NM, USV & AP and none of them are released by Raj Video Vision. In fact, before buying those DVD's, I first went to RVV and asked them for these films but they told me due to legal issues these films are not available.

Same case with NT's " En Magan " also, which was recently shown in Raj.

Vivek has come to a stage where he can't act without imitating some one. He had already imitated Nambiar, Sivaji, Rajini and Kamal.

Vivek even donned a woman's dress like that of Sreya in 'Guru en aalu' featuring Madhavan. This was fully exploited in the advertisements and as such he has started moving in the same road.

Vivek is acting along with Sundar C in 'Vada' directed by A.Venkatesh. In this film he will appear in M.G.R.'s dress and make up.

Though he is no more, M.G.R. enjoys a great popularity among his fans. There are a countless number of people who would immediately condemn any wrong news about M.G.R. What Vivek is now getting into is a 1000 watts power cable.

In a film where Vivek claimed that he was the one who showed tata to M.G.R. he had to face the ire from the public. Later he clarified that he waved at M.G.R. who passed him in his car. He had a handful for claiming to have shown tata to M.G.R. and now that he is putting on M.G.R.'s make up, junior Kalaivanar has to be on caution.

There used to be a time during the 80's in Chennai where theatres used to play Films division documentary prior to starting the movies... Adhulla neraiya vaati theatre-le MGR films divisions documentary thaan poduvainga... Ange kidaikira audience response/whistles/cheers - films divisionukku appuram vara padathin hero-vuku kooda kidaikaadhu...

I believe couple of years after MGR passed away (either during the '89 or 1990 - I'm not sure) there was a documentary movie made out of MGR which is a collage of all his movie collections... Nadodi Mannan, Adimai Pen, Aayirathil Oruvan, and many more movies already did a round in the past 1 year or so and now USV :P

Out of field by 3 decades now, not with us for more than 2 decades now but still his movies were released and doing decent business in cities is only possible for MGR, i would say :thumbsup: :notworthy: Villages and Towns la appappa oru padam poattu panam paakurathu eppayumae nadakura oru vishayam.

I heard USV was never advertised in Dinathanthi when it was released the first time. For a strange it is been advertised now in the same paper :wink:

However looks like the time of release is not so good as heavy rains across the city :oops:

As far his movies in small towns and villages, i had seen many times his movies being screened and receive very good response almost equal to current stars movies :P For eg.. I had even seen some years before a least popular movie like Naan yaen Piranthaen with tremondous response in my village on the first day :)

இந்தத் தொடரில் எனது குருவும் தாத்தாவுமான தாத்தாச்சாரியார் கே. சுப்பிரமணியத்துக்கு அடுத்ததாக நான் எடுத்துக் கொள்ளப் போகிற பெரிய மனிதர் யாராக இருப்பார்?

டாக்டர் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் தவிர வேறு யாராகவும் அவர் இருக்க முடியாது

நான் அறிந்தவர்.. எனக்கு தெரிந்தவர் என்று அவரைக் கூறுவதைவிட என் குடும்பத்தில் ஒருவர் அவர் என்று கூறுவதுதான் மிகவும் சரி. ஏன் என்றால், தாத்தா கே. சுப்பிரமணியத்துக்கு மிகவும் நெருக்கமானவர்களில் எம்.ஜி.ஆரும் ஒருவர்.

1943-ல் கே. சுப்பிரமணியம் 'நடன கலா சேவா' என்ற நடனப் பள்ளியை நடத்தி வந்தார். அந்தப் பள்ளியில் நாட்டியப் பேரொளி பத்மினி மற்றும் அவரது சகோதரிகளும் இருந்தனர். (லலிதா, பத்மினி, ராகினி). அவர்களோடு அந்தக் காலத்தில் பிரபலமடைந்திருந்த நடனக்காரர்களும் இருந்தனர். அவர்களில் ஒருவர் வி.என். ஜானகி. அப்போது ஒரு நடனக் குழுவில் முக்கியமான நடனமணியாக இருந்தார் வி.என.ஜானகி. அவர் 'நடன கலா சேவா'விலும் இருந்தார். இதெல்லாம் ஜானகியம்மா நடிக்க வருவதற்கெல்லாம் முன்னால். இந்தக் காலகட்டத்தில்தான் ஜானகியைப் பார்க்க எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அந்த நடனப் பள்ளிக்கு வருவார். இதன் மூலம் எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கும் தாத்தாவுக்கும் பழக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது. அப்போது முதல் தாத்தா காலமாகும் வரை இந்த நட்பு நெருக்கமாக வளர்ந்தபடியே இருந்தது.

இந்த நெருக்கம் எந்த அளவுக்கு சென்றது என்பதை ஜானகி - எம்.ஜி.ஆர் நட்பு, காதலாக மலர்ந்து, பதிவுத் திருமணத்தில் முடிந்த போது எனது தாத்தாதான் சாட்சி கையெழுத்து போட்டார்கள் என்பதிலிருந்து நன்றாக தெரிந்து கொள்ள முடியும். அந்த அளவிற்கு தாங்கள் அன்னியோன்யமாகப் பழகியதை எனது தாத்தாவே என்னிடம் கூறியுள்ளார்கள். எம்.ஜி.ஆரும் கூறியள்ளார்கள். எனவே எங்கள் வீட்டுப் பிள்ளையானார் எம்.ஜி.ஆர்.

நடன கலாசேவை என்பது அந்தக் காலத்தில் பிரபலமான அமைப்பாகும். அந்தக் காலத்தில் இங்கு நடனம் பயின்றவர்களே பின்னாட்களில் திரைத்துறையில் ஜொலித்தனர். குரு கோபிநாத், வழுவூர் ராமையா பிள்ளை, போலோநாத் போன்றவர்கள் ஆசிரியராக இருந்தனர்.

இவ்வாறு எங்கள் இரு குடும்பங்களுக்கும் இடையேயான நட்பு வளர்ந்து, நெருக்கமாகி வந்த சமயத்தில்தான், 1949ல் நான் பிறந்தேன். இந்த காலகட்டத்தில்தான் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் மலைக்கள்ளன் படம் வந்தது. இந்தப் படத்தில் பாதி படம் வரை என் தாத்தாதான் இயக்கினார். நாடோ டி மன்னன் படம்கூட தாத்தாதான் முடித்துக் கொடுத்தார்.

'நாடோ டி மன்னன்' படம் ரகுநாத்தை வைத்து தொடங்கப்பட்டது. ஆனால் பாதிப்படத்திலேயே இருவருக்குள்ளும் கருத்து வேறுபாடு ஏற்பட்டது. கருப்பு - வெள்ளையில் ஏராளமான காட்சி எடுத்துவிட்டார்கள். எப்படி முடிப்பது என்று தெரியவில்லையாம். இந்தக் காலகட்டத்தில் என் தாத்தா நம்பம் ஒன் இயக்குராக இருந்தார். அதனால் அவரிடம் ரஷ் போட்டுக் காட்டிய போது மீதி படததை நியே இயக்கி முடி. அது உன்னால் முடியும். உனக்குள் ஒரு இயக்குநர் இருக்கிறார். தைரியமாக செயலில் இறங்கு... தேவைப்பட்டால் நான் உதவுகிறேன்'' என்று தாத்தா கூறியுள்ளார்.

அந்த காலக்கட்டத்தில் நடந்த ஒரு நிகழ்வு மூலம் இந்த சம்பவம் எனக்கு நன்றாக நினைவில் இருக்கிறது. அப்போது எனக்கு மூன்று அல்லது நான்கு வயது இருக்கும். கருப்பு வெள்ளையில் எடுக்கப்பட்ட படத்தை தாத்தாவுக்கு போட்டு காண்பிப்பதற்காக எம்.ஜி.ஆர் அழைத்திருந்தார். நான், அபஸ்வரம் ராம்ஜி எல்லோரையும் அழைத்துக் கொணடு தாத்தா ஸ்டூயோவிற்கு சென்றார்கள். வி.என். ஜானகியம்மாள் வண்டியில் திரும்பி வந்தோம். அப்போதுதான் அந்த சம்பவம் நடந்தது.

அபஸ்வரம் ராம்ஜி எனது தாய் மாமன். எனது தாத்தாவின் இரண்டாவது மனைவி எஸ்.டி. சுப்புலட்சுமியின் மகன். அவருக்கும் எனக்கும் ஆறு மாதங்கள் வித்தியாசம். அவரைவிட நான் ஆறு மாதம் இளையவன். இப்படி நாங்கள் எல்லோரும் வண்டியில் திரும்பும் போது இருவரும் விளையாடிக கொண்டு வந்தோம். திடீரென்று இரண்டு பேருக்கும் சண்டை வந்துவிட்டது. நன்றாக எனக்கு நினைவு இருக்கிறது. கோடம்பாக்கம் சின்னகேட் தாண்டி வரும் போது - அப்போது கோடம்பாக்கம் மேம்பாலம் கிடையாது. திடீரென்று சண்டை முற்றி ராம்ஜி கார் கதவைத் திறந்து என்னை கீழே தள்ளிவிட முயன்றான். ''நீ அப்பவே கொலை முயற்சியில் ஈடுபட்டவன்..'' என்று இப்பவும நான் வேடிக்கையாக ராம்ஜியை கூறுவேன். இருவரும் சேர்ந்து சிரிப்போம். இப்படி ஒரு சம்பவம் நடைபெற்றதால் நாடோ டி மன்னனை என்னால் மறக்க முடியாது.

அப்போது நாடோ டி மன்னன் ரஷ் பார்த்த தாத்தா, படம் மூன்று அல்லது நான்கு மணி நேரம் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்ததை கவனித்து, இதற்கு முடிவேயில்லையா என்று யோசித்தார்கள். இந்த சமயத்தில் என் தாத்தா கே. சுப்பிரமணியம் இயக்கத்தில் கன்னடத்தில் 'கச்சதேவராயன்' என் படம் தயாராகிக் கொண்டிருந்தது. இதில் பி. சரோஜாதேவி கதாநாயகியாக நடித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அவரை இரண்டாவது கதாநாயகியாக போட்டு இரண்டாம் பகுதியை கலரில் எடுக்கும்படி தாத்தா ஆலோசனை கூறியுள்ளார். அதன்படி கதையை மாற்றி இரண்டாவது பாதியை என் தாத்தா இயக்கி மேற்பார்வை செய்தார்.

முதல் பாதியில் பானுமதி இரண்டாவது பாதியில் சரோஜாதேவி. இதில் பாதி கருப்பு - வெள்ளை. இரண்டாவது பாதி கலர் என்று வித்தியாசமாக அந்தப் படம் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டு வெளியாகி சூப்பர் ஦வ்ற்றி பெற்றது.

''இந்தப் படம் வெற்றி பெற்றால் நான் மன்னன்; இல்லையென்றால் நான் நாடோ டி..'' என்று எம்.ஜி.ஆர் கூறியதாக நான் பின்னர் கேள்விப்பட்டிருக்கிறேன். அந்த அளவுக்கு எம்.ஜி.ஆர் வாழ்க்கையில் ஒரு திருப்புமுனையாக அமைந்த படம் 'நா஧஡டி மன்னன்'

இதையெல்லாம் எதற்கு சொல்ல வருகிறேன்.. இவ்வாறு நாடோ டி மன்னன் படம் வெற்றிகரமாக முடிவடைந்ததால் எம்.ஜி.ஆர் எனது தாத்தாவுக்ப் பணம் கொடுக்க முன் வந்துள்ளது.அதை வாங்க தாத்தா மறுத்துவிட்டார். 'ஆண்டவன் புண்ணியத்தில் இப்போது நன்றாக உள்ளேன். எப்போது எனக்குத் தேவை என்று எதிர்பார்க்கிறேனோ அபபோது உன்னிடம் வந்து வாங்கிக் கொள்ளுகிறேன் என்று தாத்தா கூறியுள்ளார். எம்.ஜி.ஆரிடம் இருந்த வாங்காமல் இருப்பதற்காக ஒப்புக்கு கூறப்பட்ட வார்த்தைதான் இவை. பின்னாளில் எம்.ஜி.ஆரிடம் பணம் வாங்கும் நிலைமை வரும் என்று அபபோது நம்பர் ஒன் இயக்குநராகக் கொடிக்கட்டி பறந்த கே. சுப்பிரமணியத்தால் நினைத்துக்கூடப் பார்த்திருக்க முடியாது.

ஆனால், அப்படியும் ஒரு நாள் வந்தது. எம்.ஜி.ஆரிடம் பணம் கேட்டு என்னையே அனுப்பினார்.

And as far the current release, looks like there are some color corrections/enhancements, DTS quality, new BGM in some places or so :P I think the same way, Nadodi Mannan and Adimai Pen would be released.

Reg. USV, NM & AP, I have these DVD's but as you said, if its relased with color & sound enhancements, then I guess it should be worth watching.

The distribution rights of all the three films was a point of dispute between Divya films of Chennai and the Salem distributor who claimed of having bought the perpetual rights (99 Years) and matter was sub judice. Now the judgement had come in favour of Salem distributor who had released USV and is planning the release of other two movies.

He has also made use of this judgement to sell the video rights of all the three movies and Raj Video Vision has bought the rights. Raj is planning to bring out the VCD/DVD of all the three on Deepavali day if market sources (read DVD business people) are to be believed. So, soon the market will have DVDs of

Adimai Penn

Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban.

Joe,

You must remember that these movies were released when there was no Video etc. But TV was very much available in foreign countries. Earlier the foreign rights used to be called as FMS (this was excluding Sri Lanka) and the people who acquired this rights sold this to Video Casette companies (Either their agreement had a provision or it was too difficult for the people here to fight a legal battle with them). That's how USV and AP CDs came out. But till his life time MGR refused to give the Indian Video rights of all the three. This was one of the legal disputes between the siblings of Janaki which took a nasty turn some 3 months back [ Hope you know what I mean].

It should be. I was talking to a person connected with Moser Baer and he gave all these informations. If Raj had acquired the Video rights, then they would have definitely bought the satellite rights also.

இருந்தாலும் மறைந்தாலும் பேர் சொல்ல வேண்டும்! இவர் போல யார் என்று ஊர் சொல்ல வேண்டும்'' என்ற எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் பாடல் வரிகள் யாருக்குப் பொருந்துகிறதோ இல்லையோ, எம்.ஜி.ஆருக்கு மிக நன்றாகவே பொருந்தும். இல்லையென்றால், அவர் மறைந்து பத்தொன்பது வருடங்கள் ஆனபிறகும், அவரது படங்கள் இன்றைக்கும் சாதித்துக் கொண்டிருக்குமா? தூத்துக்குடியில் உள்ள ஒரு டூரிங் தியேட்டரில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படங்கள் தொடர்ந்து நூறு வாரங்களாக ஓடிக்கொண்டிருப்பதுதான் லேட்டஸ்ட் சாதனை.

தூத்துக்குடி புறநகர்ப் பகுதியான தாளமுத்து நகரிலுள்ள `சத்யா' டூரிங் தியேட்டரில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நடித்த அத்தனை படங்களையும் ஒரு சாதனை முயற்சியாகத் தொடர்ந்து திரையிடுவது என்று முடிவெடுத்து, வாரத்தில் சனி, ஞாயிறு ஆகிய இரண்டு நாட்களும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நடித்த படங்களை மட்டுமே திரையிட்டு வருகிறார்கள். வாரத்துக்கு ஒரு படம் என்று முடிவு செய்து, இதுவரை கிட்டத்தட்ட இரண்டு வருடங்களாக எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படங்களை ஓட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். எம்.ஜி.ஆர். உயிரோடு இருந்தபோது கூட இப்படி ஒரு சாதனை எங்கும் நடந்ததில்லையே என்ற சந்தோஷத்தில் இருக்கிறார்கள் இங்குள்ள எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ரசிகர்கள்.

சரி, இந்த சாதனை முயற்சிக்கான தொடக்கம் எங்கிருந்து கிடைத்தது? சத்யா தியேட்டரின் உரிமையாளர் பாலகிருஷ்ணனிடம் கேட்டோம்.

"நவீன தொழில்நுட்பங்களுடன் நவீன தியேட்டர்கள் வந்துவிட்ட இந்தக் காலத்தில் நாங்கள் அடிக்கடி பழைய படங்களைத் திரையிட்டு வந்தோம். எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படங்களைத் திரையிட்டால் மட்டும் அதிக அளவில் கூட்டம் வரும். எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் தீவிர ரசிகர்கள் தவறாமல் அவரது படங்களைப் பார்க்க வந்து விடுவார்கள். அவர்களில் தூத்துக்குடி நகர எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மன்றத் தலைவர் ஏசாதுரையும் ஒருவர். அவர்தான், `இதுவரை யாரும் செய்யாத சாதனையை நம்ம தியேட்டரில் செய்யவேண்டும். அதாவது, தலைவர் படத்தைத் தொடர்ந்து தியேட்டரில் திரையிட வேண்டும்' என்று ஐடியா கொடுத்தார். நானும் ஆரம்ப காலத்தில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படங்களைத் திரையிட்டுச் சம்பாதித்தவன் என்பதால் `சரி' என்றேன்.

தினமும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படங்களைத் திரையிட முதலில் திட்டமிட்டோம். ஆனால், படம் வாங்குவதில் சிரமம் ஏற்படும் என்பதால் வாரத்தில் இரண்டு நாட்கள் சனி, ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமைகளில் மட்டும் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படம் திரையிடுவது என்ற முடிவுக்கு வந்தோம்.

கடந்த வருடம் ஜனவரி மாதம் 25-ம்தேதி `நினைத்ததை முடிப்பவன்' படத்தின் மூலம் இதை ஆரம்பித்தோம். சாதனை முயற்சிக்காக நாங்கள் திரையிடுகிறோம் என்று அறிவித்திருந்ததால் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் ரசிகர்கள் அதிக அளவில் வந்து குவிந்து விட்டார்கள். அந்தப் படம் மூன்று நாட்கள் ஓடியது. நல்ல வசூல். அன்று தொடங்கி கடந்த வாரம் வரை 85 படங்களைத் திரையிட்டுவிட்டோம். கடந்த வாரம் `பல்லாண்டு வாழ்க' படத்தைத் திரையிட்டோம். முதலில் நூறு வாரங்கள் வரை எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படங்களைத் திரையிட நினைத்த நாங்கள், அதற்குக் கிடைத்த வரவேற்பைப் பார்த்துவிட்டு அவர் நடித்த அத்தனை படங்களையும் திரையிட முடிவு செய்துவிட்டோம்.

எம்.ஜி.ஆர். நடித்த மொத்த படங்கள் 134. அதில் 25 படங்களுக்கு பிரிண்ட் இல்லை. எனவே, பிரிண்ட் இருக்கிற 109 படங்களையும் திரையிடுவது என்று முடிவெடுத்திருக்கிறோம். எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படத்தை வாங்கித் திரையிடுவதில் அப்படியென்ன சாதனை இருக்கிறது என்று சிலர் கேட்கலாம். பொதுவாக, எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படங்களின் உரிமையை வைத்திருப்பவர் ஓர் ஊரில் இருப்பார். படப்பெட்டி வேறொரு ஊரில் இருக்கும். அதை அலைந்து திரிந்து வாங்குவதே ஒரு பெரிய சாதனைதான். இந்த முயற்சியில் ஆங்காங்கே உள்ள எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ரசிகர்கள் எங்களுக்கு உதவுகிறார்கள்'' என்றவரிடம், `எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் எந்தப் படம் அதிக லாபத்தைத் தந்தது?' என்ற விவரத்தைக் கேட்டோம்.

"புதிய படங்கள் எங்கள் தியேட்டரில் செகண்ட் ரிலீஸ், தேர்டு ரிலீஸ் ஆகி ஒரு வாரம் ஓடினாலும் மொத்தத்தில் எட்டாயிரம் ரூபாய் வசூலாகாது. ஆனால், எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் படங்கள் இரண்டே நாளில் அந்த வசூலைத் தந்து விடுகின்றன. `அடிமைப்பெண்' படம் எங்கள் தியேட்டரில் எட்டு நாள் ஓடி ரூபாய் அறுபதாயிரத்துக்கும் அதிகமான லாபத்தைத் தந்தது. ஒரு காட்சியின்போது ஆயிரத்துக்கும் அதிகமான ரசிகர்கள் வந்திருந்தார்கள். நீண்ட இடைவெளிக்குப் பிறகு அந்தப் படம் வந்ததால் அவ்வளவு வரவேற்பு'' என்றவர், ``எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் படங்கைளப் பார்க்க தஞ்சாவூரில் இருந்து ஒரு ரசிகர் வாராவாரம் தவறாமல் வந்து விடுகிறார். நெல்லையில் இருந்து இருபது பேர் வேனில் படம் பார்க்க தவறாமல் வருகிறார்கள்'' என்றொரு ஆச்சர்யமான தகவலையும் சொன்னார்.

நாம் வாராவாரம் வரும் அந்த ரசிகர்களுக்காகக் காத்திருந்தோம். ஆனால், வேன் ரிப்பேர் ஆகி விட்டதால் அந்த வாரம் அவர்கள் வரவில்லை என்ற நிலையில் தஞ்சாவூர் ரசிகரிடம் பேசினோம்.

"என் பெயர் ராஜ். சொந்த ஊர் தூத்துக்குடிதான். இப்போது தஞ்சாவூரில் உள்ள ஒரு தனியார் நிறுவனத்தில் வேலை செய்கிறேன். சிறு வயதிலிருந்தே நான் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். ரசிகன். `பல்லாண்டு வாழ்க' படத்தை மட்டும் நூறு தடவைக்கு மேல் பார்த்திருப்பேன். எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மீதுள்ள ஆர்வம் காரணமாக வாரா வாரம் இங்கே படம் பார்க்க வந்துவிடுவேன். `சாதனை முயற்சியாக இதைச் செய்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். தலைவரின் படம் தியேட்டர்காரருக்கு நஷ்டத்தை தந்துவிடக் கூடாது' என்ற எண்ணமும் என்னைத் தொடர்ந்து இங்கே வர வைக்கிறது'' என்றார் அவர்.

தூத்துக்குடி நகர எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மன்றச் செயலாளராக இருக்கும் ஏசாதுரை போன்ற பலர் அவ்வப்போது தங்கள் சொந்தச் செலவிலும் ரசிகர்களை அழைத்து வருவதுண்டாம். நாம் ஏசாதுரையிடம் பேசினோம்.

"சென்னையிலுள்ள ஒரு தியேட்டரில் ஒரு வாரம் முழுவதும் ஒரு ஹீரோவின் படத்தை மட்டுமே திரையிடுவதாகக் கேள்விப்பட்டேன். அதுபோல தலைவரின் படத்தைத் தொடர்ந்து திரையிட்டால் நன்றாக இருக்குமே என்று சத்யா தியேட்டரின் உரிமையாளரிடம் யோசனை சொன்னேன். உடனே அவர் சம்மதித்தார். இதுவரை இங்கே 85 படங்கள் திரையிடப்பட்டு விட்டன. எங்களுக்கு ஏராளமான உதவிகளைச் செய்த தலைவருக்கு நாங்கள் செய்யும் சின்ன கைமாறு இது.

25-வது படத்தைத் திரையிட்டபோது எம்.ஜி.ஆர். மன்றத்தின் சார்பில் சைக்கிள் ஊர்வலம் வைத்து தியேட்டருக்குச் சென்றோம். குலுக்கல் முறையில் தேர்ந்தெடுத்த ரசிகர்களுக்கு லேமினேட் செய்த எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படம் கொடுத்தோம். 50-வது வாரம் `எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளை' படத்தைப் பார்க்க வந்த ரசிகர்களுக்கு பிரியாணி அளித்ததுடன், 25 பெண்களுக்கு குடம், 50 பேருக்கு சேலை, 50 பேருக்கு வேஷ்டி கொடுத்தோம். 100-வது வாரம் `ஒளிவிளக்கு' படம் திரையிடப்பட இருக்கிறது. அந்தப் படம் தலைவர் நடித்த நூறாவது படம். ஆகவே, அந்த நாளில் படம் பார்க்க வரும் அனைவருக்கும் பரிசுப் பொருட்கள் கொடுக்கப் போகிறோம். நடிகர் சத்யராஜ் அல்லது சரோஜாதேவி ஆகியோரில் ஒருவரை அழைத்து வந்து அந்தப் பரிசுகளைக் கொடுக்க இருக்கிறோம்'' என்றார் அவர்.

CHENNAI: “Between Jackie Chan and MGR, I will go for MGR,” declared UNICEF official Kunihiko Chris Hirbayashi to members of the audience who are momentarily undecided whether to applaud or laugh. It is moot that by the time he finished his cameo speech at the launch of a two-day workshop on maternal and infant mortality on Thursday, they had indulged in both, in ample measure.

For Mr. Hirbayashi, both Jackie Chan and M. G. Ramachandran were terrific actors who had pulled off some of the most amazing stunts on screen. But, unlike Chan, MGR plunged into politics to eventually become a Chief Minister, who made a huge difference to the lives of the masses, he said.

Mr. Hirbayashi, who is UNICEF deputy director-programmes, India country office, Delhi, said he was always mistaken for Jackie Chan.

“Sometimes, children run after me for autographs….and I oblige them too.”

An accomplished paediatric heart surgeon, Mr. Hirbayashi recollected the incident that made him give up a lucrative career for a position that would help him improve the lot of the underprivileged worldwide. In 1994, while in transit, Mr. Hirbayashi randomly picked up a copy of The New York Times. He recalled how the Pulitzer-winning photograph of a scraggy girl child with a vulture sensing feed in the frame hit him in the face. His life was never the same after that.

ரசிகர்கள் மேல் அப்படி ஒரேயடியாக பழி சொல்லிவிடவும் முடியாது. காரணம் ரசிகர்கள் எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் மேல வைத்திருந்த அபார மதிப்பினால், படங்களில்கூட அவரை எதிர்ப்பவர்களை நிஜ வில்லன்களாக நினைத்தார்கள்.

அதே சமயம், 'நினைத்ததை முடிப்பவன்' படத்தில் நல்லவராக (போலீஸ் அதிகாரியாக) வரும் நம்பியார், ஒரு கட்டத்தில் பொறுக்கிகளின் கையில் சிக்கி கதறிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் (எம்.ஜி.ஆரின் தங்கை) சாரதாவைக் காப்பாற்ற ஜீப்பில் இருந்து குதித்து ஓடும்போது, அதே ரசிகர்கள் நம்பியாருக்காக கைதட்டினார்கள். (எனக்கு தெரிந்து எம்.ஜி.ஆர். படங்களில் நம்பியாருக்கு கைதட்டல் விழுந்த படம் இதுவாகத்தான் இருக்கும்).

One of the most popular movie stars Tamilnadu has ever seen MGR is making a comeback to films. It would be an animation flick from the stables of Mayabimbham Media (P) Ltd who had earlier made the 3D film 'V4'.

The 3D film starring MGR has been titled 'Puratchi Thalaivan'. The producers of the film have said that MGR had last performed in the film 'Maduraiyai Meeta Sundara Pandiyan' and proudly proclaim that they are bringing him back to the silver screen after all these years.

'Puratchi Thalaivan' would be directed by Venky Baboo and produced by Sridevi Rao. A team of 3D animators would indulge themselves in the job of recreating the magic of MGR on screen.

One wonders who the animated heroine of the film would be. Would it be Saroja Devi or Jayalalitha. Who knows….the think tank behind MGR might prefer newer heroines like Trisha, Shriya or Nayantara.

Recently one of my colleagues narrated me an instance which happened during his schooling days.
Thought I will share in this thread :P

He belongs to Neyveli and opposite to his house was a poor muslim widow who was earning her living through daily wages in a near by factory. She had pledged her jewels for Rs.5000 with the supervisor of the factory. When she tried to retrieve it by paying the Principal amount along with interest @ 2% per month for the purpose of her daughter's marriage, the supervisor refused to part with the jewels and demanded Rs.50000. She did not know what to do and wrote a petition to the then chief minister MGR about her plight. 1 week later the DSP of the region arrived in a police jeep looking out for that lady. Then he asked the lady to accompany him along with Rs.5000 and show the supervisor's house. The supervisor had to give back the jewels and as a penalty for the harrassment he caused, he was asked to waive the entire interest for the period. The lady was very happy and proud :)

This happened in 1982 and when MGR passed away in 1987 that lady rolled on the road, slamming her face and wept. For her MGR was the only savior of Justice for all the under privileged Tamils :)

கல்லூரியின் இளங்கலை வகுப்பில் அப்போதுதான் அடியெடுத்து வைக்கிறார்கள் அந்த மாணவர்கள்.

கல்லூரியைப் பற்றியோ அந்த கடற்கரைச் சாலை பற்றியோ எந்த விவரமும் தெரியாத கிராமத்து மாணவர்கள்…

கல்லூரி அலுவலகத்தில் சேர்க்கைக் கட்டணம் செலுத்தப் போனபோது, திடீரென்று கட்டண உயர்வு அமல்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளதாக அறிவித்தார்கள்.

அழைப்புக் கடிதத்தில் சொன்னதைவிட 400 ரூபாய் அதிகம். அது ஒரு பெரிய தொகைதான். ஊருக்குப் போய் வாங்கி வந்தால்தான் உண்டு. மணியார்டர் அனுப்பச் சொல்லாம் என்றாலும், முகவரி கிடையாது.

கலங்கி நின்ற அனைவரையும் ஒன்று திரட்டினர் சிலர். ‘முதல்வரைப் பார்க்கப் போகலாம் வாருங்கள்’ எனப் புறப்பட்டனர். கல்லூரி முதல்வரையல்ல… கருணையின் அடையாளமான தமிழக முதல்வர் எம்ஜிஆரை!

20 மாணவர்கள் சென்றார்கள் தலைமைச் செயலகத்துக்கு. வாயிலில் இருந்த இரு காவலர்கள்தான் முதல்வர் அறையைக் காட்டினர். மெட்டல் டிடெக்டர் சோதனையெல்லாம் கிடையாது. மனித நேயத்தின் உணர்வுகள் தெரியாத கருவிகளின் பாதுகாப்பு தேவை இருக்கவில்லை அப்போது.

அட, ‘முன் அனுமதி வாங்கினீர்களா?’ என்றுகூட மாணவ்ரகளிடம் யாரும் கேட்கவில்லை.

முதல்வரின் உதவியாளர் அந்த மாணவர்களில் நால்வரை மட்டும் முதல்வரின் அறைக்குள் அனுமதித்தார்.

எதிரியையும் தன் வசப்படுத்தும் அசாத்தியப் புன்னகையோடு அந்த மாமனிதர், மாணவர்களை வரவேற்றார். அவரால் சரியாக பேச முடியாத காலகட்டம் அது. பக்தர்களிடம் என்ன மொழியில் பேசுகிறார் கடவுள்… அந்த மாமனிதரும் அப்படித்தான். எத்தனையோ லட்சம் ஏழை மாணவர்களுக்கு கல்விக் கண் திறந்த ஆண் சரஸ்வதி அவர்.

மாணவர்கள் கண்ணீருடன் சொன்னதைக் கருணையுடன் கேட்டவர்… சற்று தடுமாறியபடி சொன்ன வார்த்தை, ‘நல்லா படிக்கணும்… வகுப்புக்குப் போங்க. நான் பார்த்துக்கறேன்..!’

எழுந்து வந்து தோளில் கையை வைத்து, தேவ ஆசி மாதிரி கூறினார்.

அந்த வார்த்தைகள் இப்போதும், காதுகளில் ஒலித்தபடி இருக்கின்றன… நினைக்கும் போதெல்லாம் நெகிழ்வில் கண்களை நீர் முத்துகள் மறைக்கின்றன.

அந்த அறையை விட்டு வெளியில் வந்த சில வினாடிகளில் முதல்வரின் உதவியாளர் மீண்டும் வந்தார்.

‘போகும்போது பிற்படுத்தப்பட்டோர் நலத்துறை இயக்குநரைப் பார்த்துவிட்டுப் போங்கப்பா… முதல்வர் உத்தரவு போட்டுட்டார்… கவலைப்படாம பத்திரமா கல்லூரிக்கு போகச் சொன்னார்…’ என்றார்.

தலைமைச் செயலகத்திலிருந்து எழிலகம் செல்வதற்குள் உத்தரவு தயாராக இருந்தது.

‘அரசு கலைக் கல்லூரிகளில் கூடுதல் கல்விக் கட்டணம் ரத்து… முதல்வர் எம்ஜிஆர் உத்தரவு!!’

நம்பினால் நம்புங்கள்… இந்த உத்தரவுக்குப் பின் கல்லூரிக்கு பிற்படுத்தப்பட்ட மாணவர்கள் கட்டிய தொகை வெறும் ரூ.65 மட்டும்தான். தாழ்த்தப்பட்ட மாணவர்கள் கட்டியது ரூ.15!!

அந்த ஆண்டு முதல் பிற்படுத்தப்பட்ட மாணவர்களுக்கும் உதவித் தொகையை உயர்த்தி படிப்புச் செலவு குறித்த கவலையின்றி படிக்கும் வகை செய்தார்…

பொதுவாகவே பெயருக்கு முன்னாலும் பின்னாலும் பட்டங்களையும் படிப்புகளையும் சுமந்து கொண்டே திரியும் வழக்கம் பிடிக்காதவன் நான். எம்ஜிஆர் பார்க்காத பட்டமா…

ஆனால் இப்போது நிச்சயம் அவற்றை என் பெயருக்கு முன்னாலும் பின்னாலும் போட்டுக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் என ஆசைப்படுகிறேன்…

ஏன் தெரியுமா?

இந்த நாட்டின் அடையாளம் காணப்படாத ஒரு குக்கிராமத்தில், ஏழ்மையில் பிறந்தவனும்கூட, சர்வதேச பொருளாதாரத்தில் பிஎச்டி பட்டம் வாங்குமளவுக்கு படிக்க முடியும். அதற்கான அனைத்து வசதிகளையும் அரசாங்கத்தாலேயே செய்து தர முடியும் என்ற நிலையினை முதலில் உருவாக்கிக் கொடுத்தவர் எம்ஜிஆர்தான்!

இன்றைய உயர் அதிகாரிகளில் பலர் அப்படிப் படித்து ஐஏஎஸ் ஆனவர்கள்தான்… மருத்துவர்களில் பலர் வெறும் 1200 ரூபாய் கல்விக் கட்டணம் செலுத்தி எம்பிபிஎஸ் படித்தவர்கள்தான்… முனைவர் பட்டம் பெற்று கல்லூரிகளில் ‘ஆதிக்கம்’ செலுத்தும் பல பேராசிரியர்களுக்கும் கல்விக் கண் திறந்த வள்ளல், இரண்டாம் வகுப்பு கூட படிக்காத அந்த மாமேதைதான்… நிஜமாகவே பாரதத்தின் ஒப்பற்ற ரத்தினம் அவர்.

MGR remains a compelling topic for filmmakers and film lovers, even 21 years after his death. And in a phase of reliving old movies and songs, through remakes and remixes, he and his movies are hot property, as he towers Tamil cinema as a colossus.

Hardly anyone escapes the fantasy of doing an MGR song, or having people sway to their tunes the way he did. That Rajinikanth, who’s arguably the most popular living star in Tamil cinema, used MGR’s name as his in Sivaji The boss, is only ample proof of that. And why, Kamal Haasan, who’s already used an MGR title, Sathi Leelavathi, had lined up one more such title, Marmayogi, for his next.

But this craze for MGR doesn’t confine itself to the immediate generations following his alone. Actors Backiaraj and Sathyaraj, who’ve openly flouted their regard for the Puratchi Thalaivar, are backed by the youngest crop of actors today too, including Backiaraj’s son, Shantanu himself. Says the young actor, “It’s hard to escape the magic of he and his movies. If I were asked to do a remake of his films, I’d definitely pick Nadodi Mannan, Ulagam Sutrum Valiban or Vettaikaaran. I believe just using his title creates an impact with the people,” explains the actor, who is currently involved in the last lap of shooting for a remake of his dad’s movie, Pudhiya Varpugal. It may be noted here that two of the movies mentioned by the actor, Vettaikaaran and Ulagam Sutrum Valiban are being reused in Kollywood now, with another movie also titled Valiban Sutrum Ulagam.

Speak about Vettaikaaran, it is all set to be Vijay’s next movie, following Villu, and will begin in February. Speaking to Expresso, director Babu Sivan, who debuts with Vettaikaaran says, “The title was chosen because it would have a good reach among cinema fans. But that was only half the reason for choosing such a title. The title of Vettaikaaran, meaning hunter, fits the bill to describe the hero’s character in the commercial, action-sentiment movie.”

Actor-director Sundar C thinks no different. “I’m a diehard MGR fan myself. And I have a dream project in mind, and I’ve given it the title of MGR’s Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban. It has no resemblance to the actual story, but it’s title close to my heart as an MGR fan. And it fits the story too,” explains the director. But if he were to remake an MGR classic, which one would it be?

“Naadodi Mannan, obviously,” he responds. “It’s got all the ingredients to make it a relevant hit even today: from the grandeur, to the complex storyline, twists in the story, exotic island locations and a gripping climax. And yeah, two heroines to dance with,” laughs Sundar C, adding that the film had an enviable second half.

The list of MGR fans in the industry is long, and longer is a check of MGR titles used in films today, from 'Aayirathil Oruvan', 'Nam Naadu', 'Nalai Namadhey', 'Pudhumai Pithan', 'Raman Theydiya Seethai', 'Netru Indru Nalai' and 'Anbe Va', to movies after his songs like 'Pachaikili Muthucharam', 'Azhagiya Ta', 'Ennai Theriyuma', 'Thulluvadho Ilamai', to name a few.

Attempts to recreate MGR on screen through computer graphics have also been made, and the latest in that league is Puratchi Thalaivar, a full length feature film with an animated MGR as the lead. With MGR’s movies like 'Ulagam Sutrum Valiban' or 'Nadodi Mannan' being bigs hits in the second runs they have earlier this year, looks like the Puratchi Thalaivar’s magic isn’t weaning out anytime soon.

1973-ம் வருஷம் என்று ஞாபகம். நான் அப்போ பம்பாயில் வேலை பார்த்தேன்.

`பேசும்படம்' ஆசிரியர் டி.வி.ராம்நாத் அவர்களுடைய மகன் ரமணியின் பூணூல் திருமணத்திற்காக சென்னை வந்தபோதுதான் இந்த அபூர்வ சந்திப்பை க்ளிக் செய்யற வாய்ப்பு கிடைச்சுது'' என்று படபடத்தார் பம்பாய் நாதன். நிறைய நாடகங்களிலும் நடித்தவர்.

``சினிமா பத்திரிகைக்காரர் வீட்டு நிகழ்ச்சி என்பதால் எங்கு திரும்பினாலும் நட்சத்திரங்கள் கூட்டம்! நான் போயிருந்தபோது சிவாஜியும், எம்.ஜி.ஆரும் பக்கத்தில் உட்கார்ந்திருந்ததால் கேமிராகாரர்கள் போட்டி போட்டுக்கொண்டு படம் எடுத்தார்கள். திடீர் என்று ஜெமினி அங்கே வந்தார். உட்கார இடம் இல்லாமல் அவர் தயங்குவதைப் பார்த்துவிட்டு ``வாங்க மாப்ள, மடியில உட்காருங்க'' என்று மக்கள்திலகம் ஜெமினி கணேசனை அழைத்து தன் மடிமீது உட்கார வைத்ததுதான் தாமதம். கொஞ்சநேரம் அங்கே பயங்கர மின்னல்! நானும் எடுத்தேன்.

இந்த நிகழ்ச்சி முடிந்து கொஞ்சநாள் கழித்து, அந்த மூவேந்தர்களிடமும் அவர்கள் படங்களின்மேல் கையெழுத்தும் வாங்கினேன். ஆற்காடு சாலையில் இருந்த எம்.ஜி.ஆர். அலுவலகத்தில் நான் இரண்டு பிரதிகளில் கையெழுத்து வாங்கியபோது, `எனக்கும் ஒண்ணு தரமுடியுமா?' என்று எம்.ஜி.ஆர். தயங்கிக் கேட்டபோது எனக்கு உடம்பு சிலிர்த்தது - `கொடுத்துச் சிவந்த கரங்கள்' என்னைக் கேட்டதே என்று தந்தேன்...'' பெருமிதமாகச் சொல்கிறார் பம்பாய்நாதன்..

``விழாவின் முதல் நிகழ்ச்சியாக நான் பாடினேன். நான் மெடிக்கல் படித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த நேரம். வயலின் டி.ஆர். பாப்பா. முன் வரிசையில் ராஜா சர். முத்தையா செட்டியார் உள்பட பல பிரமுகர்கள். அரங்கத்தில் இடமில்லை என்று மேடையில் எனக்குப் பின்புறம் நாற்காலி போடப்பட்டு நாவலர், பண்ருட்டி, ஆர்.எம்.வீ, ப.உ.ச, ம.பொ.சி என்று அமைச்சர்களும், கட்சி முக்கியஸ்தர்களும் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தனர். கச்சேரி அமர்க்களமாக போய்க் கொண்டிருந்தபோது, திடீரென்று எம்.ஜி.ஆர். உள்ளே நுழைய, ஒரே ஆரவாரம்.

நேராக மேடைக்கு வந்தவர் ஒருமுறை சுற்று முற்றும் பார்த்தார். நான் சிறியவனாக இருந்தாலும் ஒரு வித்வான் பாடும்போது மேடையில் சேரில் உட்காரக் கூடாது என்று நினைத்தாரோ என்னவோ, நேரே வந்து என் பக்கத்தில் சம்மணமிட்டு உட்கார்ந்து விட்டார். ஒரு நிமிஷம் ஆடிப் போய் பாட்டை நிறுத்தி விட்டேன். அடுத்த வினாடி அத்தனை அமைச்சர்களும் கீழே இறங்கி உட்கார்ந்தனர். `பாடுய்யா. ``பாடு' என்று அவர் என் முதுகை தட்டிக் கொடுத்தார். ஒரே கைதட்டல். உடனே `பண்டு தமிழ் சங்கத்தை, உண்டு பண்ணிய மன்னன் சீரெல்லாம்..' என்ற பாரதிதாசனின் பாடலை சமயோசிதமாக எடுத்துவிட்டேன். மீண்டும் ஆரவாரம்..'' - சீர்காழி பேச முடியாமல் சிலிர்த்தார்!

CHENNAI: The Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam under former Chief Minister M.G.Ramachandran came close to merging with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi said here on Tuesday. But, a leader who was then with the ADMK, Panruti Ramachandran, spoilt it, he added. Elaborating on the episode that was touched upon by Dravidar Kazhagam general secretary K.Veeramani at a function to give away Murasoli Trust awards, Mr.Karunanidhi said that Orissa leader Biju Patnaik had acted as the mediator between him and MGR.

This was during MGR’s first term as Chief Minister.

Mr.Karunanidhi said that Biju Patnaik was quite close to him and he used to discuss many issues with the leader. Patnaik brought up the issue of the merger and Mr.Karunanidhi said that he enquired as to where the suggestion had come from. Patnaik said that MGR wanted a merger and wanted to know what conditions that Mr.Karunanidhi would put forth.

Mr.Karunanidhi said that he had three conditions: one, the name would remain DMK since it was the name that Anna (C.N.Annadurai, former Chief Minister) had given the party. Two, the picture of Anna on the flag of the ADMK should be retained; if he took the picture off the flag he would be accused of not being faithful to Anna’s legacy. Three, he wanted the Rs.9000-limit for reservation (economic criterion) to go. Mr.Karunanidhi said that he would continue as party head and had no objection to MGR continuing as Chief Minister. “Hearing these conditions, Patnaik hugged me and told me that he thought I would set impossible conditions.”

A while later, Patnaik brought MGR to the Chepauk Guest House. ADMK leaders Nedunchezhian and Panruti Ramachandran (now with the DMDK) were with him. Mr.Karunanidhi also was at the Guest House. MGR walked into Mr.Karunanidhi’s room and enquired after him. “He used to call me Bhagawanae [God] or Muthalali [owner],” Mr.Karunanidhi said and added that the meeting was very cordial. It was decided that MGR would convene a meeting of the executive council of his party near Vellore the next day and that Mr.Karunanidhi conduct a similar exercise here in Chennai. Appropriate resolutions were to be passed on the merger.

One of the most popular movie stars Tamilnadu has ever seen MGR is making a comeback to films. It would be an animation flick from the stables of Mayabimbham Media (P) Ltd who had earlier made the 3D film 'V4'.

The 3D film starring MGR has been titled 'Puratchi Thalaivan'. The producers of the film have said that MGR had last performed in the film 'Maduraiyai Meeta Sundara Pandiyan' and proudly proclaim that they are bringing him back to the silver screen after all these years.

'Puratchi Thalaivan' would be directed by Venky Baboo and produced by Sridevi Rao. A team of 3D animators would indulge themselves in the job of recreating the magic of MGR on screen.

One wonders who the animated heroine of the film would be. Would it be Saroja Devi or Jayalalitha. Who knows….the think tank behind MGR might prefer newer heroines like Trisha, Shriya or Nayantara.

On the advice of his friend Hindi actor Rajendrakumar, he approached MGR – the guaranteed box office king to do a film for Chithralaya, Sridhar’s company. With the success of Urimaikural, Sridhar paid off his debts and revived his situation.

In an interview, Sridhar recalled how magnanimous MGR was, and how he was treated with honor, understanding and respect:

In order not to give Sridhar a bad name that we went begging to MGR, MGR suggested that they have a discreet meeting in Nambiyar’s house. But Sridhar, insisting that he had no fear of such a ‘bad name’, went to Ramavaram thottam. Sridhar explained his circumstances, and asked MGR to help him out by acting a film in his direction. MGR replied that he was happy to get a chance to work with Sridhar.

As always, MGR the perfect professional immediately understood Sridhar’s problems and finished the film in a few months. He assured Sridhar of his fullest cooperation and gave him bulk dates. He went one step further and gave a handwritten note that he was giving priority to complete Sridhar’s film. Sridhar was overwhelmed when MGR explained that this note would help Sridhar to get the necessary finances for the venture.

It was a hit Telugu film- Dasara Pulludu ( stg. Nageswara Rao) that was the inspiration for Urimaikkural, though Sridhar adapted it to suit MGR and the Tamil masses. However, MGR insisted on copying the attire of Nageswara Rao in the original, including the Andhra style dhothi.

As was his wont, Sridhar wanted Kannadasan to write the lyrics. Considering the fact the MGR and Kannadasan weren’t the thickest of pals (!), Sridhar asked MGR’s permission to do so, MGR readily gave the go ahead ( “Kavignarudan thaan poosal, avar varigaludan alla- dhaaaralamaaga ezhuthattum”). Sridhar got two songs written by Kannadasan and composed and recorded by MSV ( Vizhiye kathai ezhuthu and Aambalaingala neenga aambalaingalaa).

It was then that Kannadasan wrote a particularly virulent piece against MGR in a magazine, and Sridhar got the jitters, and asked MGR about the fate of the songs- MGR replied that he still had no objection to Kannadasan writing the songs. However, if Sridhar felt that MGR fans might not take kindly to Kannadasan’ songs, he was free to change the lyricist, he would not interfere in
the matter and it was up to Sridhar to decide.

Sridhar consulted some distributors, who advised him to use the two songs written by Kannadasan for some other film, and get the songs for Urimaikkural written by some other lyricist. Accordingly, Sridhar approached Vaali and got a fresh set of songs written, composed and recorded. (Sridhar approached Vaali only after explaining his predicament to Kannadasan, who agreed to the change). When MGR got to know this, he called Sridhar and told him to retain Kannadasan’s two songs as well, as those songs were really good.

Urimaikkural went on to become a super hit, and the songs are popular to this day. The songs are:

Aambalaingalaa neenga aambalaigalaa- LRE- Kannadasan
Oru thaai vayitril vandha udanpirappil- TMS- Vaali
Kalyana valaiyosai kondu- TMS, PS- Vaali

Ponna porandhaa aambalaikkitta -TMS- Vaali
Maatikkittaaradi mayilakkaalai- LRE- Vaali

Though Vizhiye kathai ezhuthu was the pick of the lot, Kalyana Valai osai kondu has its own folksy mellow enchantment- Latha carrying MGR’s sathunavu and walking towards the field, where MGR is engaged in a honest day’s labor. Sighting his beloved and hearing her call, he wipes the sweat off his brow, and washes his hands in the pump-set, and wipes them in Latha’s mundhaanai. He has his fill of both the lunch and Latha, and returns, fully refreshed, to yer-ottify!

Though KJY and SPB were increasingly singing for MGR, the 70s too had some memorable TMS-PS duets in MGR films- Kalyana valaiosai is among them.

I have watched M.G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan right from the beginning. MGR had a very modest start. Though one or two of his films became successful at first, his success was not exactly spectacular. The successes of his early films were attributed to reasons other than its hero.

In striking contrast, Sivaji Ganesan had a spectacular opening. As a matter of fact, Parasakthi, Sivaji’s first film released in 1952, was a threat to a number of established film-makers. At the time nobody thought there could be any rivalry between the two actors.

While MGR mostly did costume films, Sivaji’s roles were in social and contemporary films. In 1953, MGR played the lead in a fairly innocuous film, Malaikallan. Though it had Bhanumathi doing the lead opposite MGR, the film was sort of a subdued effort. Yet it broke all records.

Malaikallan’s was a very simple tale in contrast to the complicated storyline of Parasakthi. In Parasakthi, Sivaji does not reveal his identity to his unfortunate sister, but Malaikallan had no such plot or a formula. Bhanumathi’s performance in the film was commendable.

With Malaikallan, the great rivalry began. Each film of MGR was considered an answer to Sivaji Ganesan’s. MGR’s Thaaikku Pin Thaaram was a smashing hit. A DMK propaganda film, it has a sequence where the man fights a bull—it later became the emblem of the Murasoli, the DMK mouthpiece. Though Bhanumathi scored with her acting in most of these films, MGR, as the hero, walked away with all the accolades.

After Thaaikku Pin Thaaram, MGR and Sivaji acted together in a film, Koondukili. The film, released in 1954, did not attract much attention. Consequently, the actors decided that their careers would be independent of each other. MGR was the first actor in Tamil films to have mandrams (fan clubs). Though I do not think that MGR really engineered these mandrams, he realised their potential once they came into existence. MGR had over 1,000 mandrams within Tamil Nadu and a few outside the state.

It is amazing that MGR had inspired his fans to set up such clubs, though there were more famous actors like Raj Kapoor and Dileep Kumar who never had fan clubs. Once MGR started using the potential of his mandrams in a subtle manner, Sivaji Ganesan could no longer remain a mute witness. He, too, had his fan clubs set up.

Sivaji Ganesan mandrams resorted to unfair means to defame MGR and his films. But MGR went from strength to strength. His fans would do just about anything to promote him. Despite MGR’s moves to pip Sivaji—his overall interest in the movie in contrast to Sivaji's characterstic of confining himself to acting, his penchant for entertainment as against Sivaji’s choice of more emotional portrayals and his brilliant performances in fight sequences, which wasn’t exactly Sivaji’s forte—Sivaji remained the actor whose histrionic talent was too good for MGR to surpass. But MGR was the hero.

When the DMK split in 1972, MGR’s fans took the political fight to the streets. The top brass of the DMK thought they could wish MGR away. But the breakaway Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam stormed into the political arena by winning the 1973 Dindugul byelection. From then on, there was no stopping MGR on the political front.

The rivalry between MGR and Sivaji spilled on to politics, too. When MGR had not yet tasted political success, Sivaji felt he could bank on the name of Kamaraj and organised rallies and meetings. But Sivaji’s career in politics was short-lived. He just could not take on MGR politically. In the general elections after the Emergency, MGR scaled great heights in politics. He was perhaps the first chief minister to have a swearing-in ceremony in the open, with millions gathering to watch their hero become chief minister. By then, Sivaji had faded away from the political scene.

Their rivalry in films became irrelevant soon after MGR entered politics. MGR did only one film after that, but Sivaji continued to do film after film. The rivalry, which began almost unnoticeably, also died unnoticeably.

Ulagam Sutrum Valiban was the most challenging work for MGR. When he filmed shots in Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia in 1970 he had limited time and finance. Therefore he was very thrifty, nay stingy in working out the budget. He was counting on financial assistance from close friends as well. Although MGR earned high, much of the income went for charity, and he had little in saving.

He knew that the highlight of the movies would be the EXPO 1970 in Osaka as this film had no proper story line. But Japan had high standard of living and one of the costly areas in the world. So he had to make the tour of the countries within few days and limited cash. To be careful in spending he sent Idhayam Pesukirathu Manian to conduct a survey and make the necessary arrangements. Manian went early and made all the arrangemetns. However MGR was not to show up with his team. In Madras he had to struggle with many things, including Jayalalitha who was demanding a role in this mega movie with MGR’s name and fame running highest.

Finally he came down and stayed in a bungalow already booked by Manian. On the following day, MGR’s car was denied entry into the packed Expo area. But the survey had to be done. MGR carried the camera on his shoulder and walked tirelessly the entire length and breadth of the Expo area. this was to the amazement of youngsters who could not cope up with the aging, and yet energetic who was about 53 then. MGR was a genius. He spotted all the interesting and useful areas. On the following day the shot was made.

The song Ulagam Azhagu kalaikalin Sigaram had 200 shots altogether. The editor was amazed at the number of shots. Finally the song was reduced to just 4 minutes. This was the first Tamil song to have contained the most number of shots. This song alone covered almost all the important exhibits at the EXPO, and turned out to be a kind of documentary in its own way.

Why was this movie released in hurry? Politics and nothing else. MGR’s popularity was growing high. In 1971 there was a thought that Indira Gandhi will kill DMK. Somehow DMK won ar too many seats and Congres was moved into oblivion. This threatened Indira gandhi and boosted the ego of Mu karunanithi. MGR went to Kashmir for shooting of Idhaya venai and phoned karunanithi and asked for a post as minister in his cabinet-as Trade Minister. Mu Ka told him the constitution did not allow for an actor to hold such a post while still acting. karunaithi asked MGR to leave acting. But that would kill MGR. Then MGR requested mu ka to speak to Annai Indira on the adjustment in the constitution. Mu ka refused and told him to come back and discuss at home. When he came back the conversation between them was not cordial.

Meanwhile Mu ka had built up Mu ka Muthu in MGR style and made him start fans club Mu ka rasikar mandram. As the Mandram grew, Mu ka told him to abolish the Mandram on the grounds that party members acting infilms should not have such mandrams. MGr knew where karunainthi was arriving at. His club would be the next target. Apparently while in Kashmir,Indira had used Mohan Kumaramangalam to get MGr to release hic accounts of the expenses overseas when he went to shoot Ulakam Sutrum valiban. MGR could not provide the account. A compromise was made. MGR was to leave the party (break DMK). A pretext was worked out. MGR was to ask for accounts of the DMK misters who were corrupt then.

In a DMK meeting in madurai MGR asked those gathered “Congress is blaming DMK as a corrupt party. Do you all think so?” The people denied DMK as a corrupt party. MGR replied “Makkal Theerppe Magesn Theerppu” but the following month MGR, as treasurer of DMK asked all the ministers to give their accounts as there were accusations of DMK ministers piling up wealth. All refused. Mu Ka said the treasurer’s duty is to give accounts, not ask for accounts. heated arguments pursued. MGR left the meeting. Navalar and MU KA met and decided to sack MGR. Then MU KA announced the sacking of MGR. Immediately after the announcement, Cho ramasamy phoned his very close friend Kannadasan and mentioned about this most shocking news. As Kannadsan put down the receiver. Mu Ka himself phoned Kannadasan and asked “YOW! Ethavathu Kevli Patteera?” Kannadasan said “AMMAMAIYA. IPPOTHAAN CHO PHONE PANNAAN” Mu KA’s next question was “What do u think fo my decision?” to which the poet laurel said ” Yow Avanudaya balathai Kuraithu Edi Podatheer! Kalattaa kattayam Varum” Mu Ka said “I know, but I shall manage”

The dismissal of MGR was conveyed to MGR who was taking a break at the shooting of Amalraj pictures NETRU INRU NAALAI. AS MGR heard it he was so happy (plot worked well) and supplied payasam sent to him to all the workers. “This is my Birthday” he said. he finshed Netru Indru Naalai with much political message.
As his party was kick started, the MLA of Dindigul passed away and a by election was called for. “Thamby naan padichen Kanchiyile NEtru” in N I Naalai shows a flag of ADMK and a poster of K. Mayathevan standing for election in Dindikul under ADMK ticket. Then he worked on U SU Valiban’s early release. the DMK was using the government machnery to block all efforts of ADMK in winning the votes of Dindigul. Madurai Muthu challenged MGR he would cut off his ears should the movie be released. They crossed each other and MGR and Muthu almost had a physical fight, if not for the presence of supporters form both side. (I was in Kaaraikkal in 1977 when Parliamentary elections took place. At a party rally Muthu was already campaigning for ADMK, and his ears were intact)

But MGR took the challenge. he finished the movie. But Karunaithis was giving trouble in teh censorship Board. MGR had to settle his income tax. Finally the movie was released in the midst of high tension. In Kanchipuram ( later) a procession was held. The film box was paraded along thousands of supporters and taken to the theatre. But before that the original film roll had already reached the theatre. the film box that came with the procession had only sand and stones inside. That much fear of opposition was there) the ADMK party was only 6 months old when the by election took place. So MGR had to either make it or break it-life and death problem.
DMK did all the preliminary campaign and indications were there that DMK was prepared to win. But just 10 days before the by election, against tradition, this movie’s first release was in Dindigul. Peopel saw the movie at the box office and then went to the election box. MGR won. It was U SU valiban, among other factors, that paved way for MGR to become the Chief Minster.

So such was the impact of the movie.

Want to know what happened in Malaysia? In 1969 there were racial riots in Malaysia following which all midnight shows were banned. Midnight shows were screened on Saturdays. Only famous and first time releases were screened this way. However the ban was lifted for Ulagam Sutrum valiban. What was the use? Tickets were already sold out 12 hours ahead. Many came and were disappointed. What used to be just one dollar ticket was sold for 30 dollars and yet tickets were not enough. the film started at midnight. Hundreds were stranded outside the theatre with indescribable frustration and ANGER! the theater owner purposely increased the volume. As someone waked out o the theatre door to purchase some sweets, the door opened and sound of songs came drilling into the ears of those stranded. Tension ran high. IN the uncontrollable anger some threw stones at the theatre and broke the window panes. Police was called. The crowd dispersed. The theatre decided not to screen midnight movies. Malaysia too had die hard MGR fans. That was for Deepavali 1973.

After MGR was expelled from DMK in 1972, MU KA did all tricks to block the release of USV - but could not succeed. At that time, DMK was running the Madras Corporation. They suddenly increased the tax on wall posters just to stop the advertisement for USV. MGR decided not to put any wall poster for USV. The film was released in Devi Paradise and two other theatres. Till now, nobody would have seen such a crowd for advance booking. Even the queue for advance booking went beyond Anna Silai on Mount Road. A super hit picture. I don’t remember how many times I have seen this movie, both in theatre and in VCD.

MSV’s music / songs also played a big part in the success of the movie. Especially, the background score when MGR/Chandrakala/Nagesh going to the Floating Market in Bangkong, chased by Ashokan & CO.

When the movie was in the making, MGR told to Vali in a light jest, “You will not be given a chance to write songs for this movie” to which Vali replied “This movie will certainly include my name”

MGR was puzzled and sought clarification. Vali replied my name Vali is already buried within the film title- VALIBAN. MGR laughed it off.

The original title of the movie was ULAGAM SUTRUM THAMIZHAN. For reasons not known to us he later changed it to Valiban.

The strength of MGR movies had always been the music and songs. More than anything else MGR gave most attention to the lyrics, tune and the song scenes. For this film he sat with MSV and kept on changing the tunes, until MSV almost dropped dead. Finally MGR approved the tune and went home. Upon reaching home he would phone MSV and request him to improve further. This trend continued for a few days. This unstable mind of MGR became a sore point for MSV and finally MSV told MGR off. He told MGR to look for other composers. On the following day, MGR sent for MSV. When MSV refused to go, MGR told him the tunes had come out so well and told him to collect the cash of Rs 15,000. Just compare with the rate today’s’ composers are demanding.

MGR gave chance to many singers:

TMS- gave life to the film
PS- most appropriate female singer
Seergazhi Govindarajan- title song with political theme
SPB- upcoming then
KJ Jesudas- MGR was building him
S. Janaki- suited the Expo scene
LR Eswary- suited for Banzayee- a Japanese atmosphere.

The film ran for 28 weeks, taking the number two slot in MGR’s fim career. The best runner was Enga Veettu Pillai scoring 33 weeks.

Scenes of songs:

1. Lily malarukku Kondattam start in Kashmir, then to Malaysia, Hong Kong and finally in Singapore. The Malaysia Airport scene is only for a few seconds. That was taken in just one shot.

2. Sirithu Vazha Vendum is in Tiger Balm Gardens in Singapore, the background statues of old men with ‘big bellies’ are supposed to be ghosts (in Chinese tradition). They have been used for illustrating ‘uzhaithu vaazha vendum, pirar uzhaikka vaazhndhidaathe’ with children laughing in the foreground.

3.Nilavum Oru Pennagi is in Hong Kong

4. Pachai Kili is in Thailand - had the native music.. Commendable work by MSV

5. Thanga Thoniyile is in Hong Kong sea.

5. Banzayee is in Japan. The tune and music amazed me.

6. Avaloru navarasa nadakam is under water belle in Japan.

7. Ulakam Azhagu Kalaikalin Surangam is in Osaka Expo.

Though USV was released in 1973, all the songs except ‘namadhu vettri’ were recorded and released in 1970 itself.

I have seen the LP record having 9 songs (4 in one side and 5 on the other side).

It is said that though the film was successful, MGR could not make any money as the film was delayed for 3 years and cost of production was very high having taken the film for almost 6 to 7 hours, reduced to three hours later.

I still remember the Thailand actress “metha” came to Chennai to complete some scenes for the song “pachchai-k-kili”, MGR fans gathered at Chennnai Airport to receive her. (the scenes of MGR/Meta wearing Raaja/Raani dress were shot at Sathya Studio)

USV was one of the very few films that ran for 100 days in a small town like Dindigul.

One small correction - The Dindigul election in which ADMK (Mayaththevar) won for the first time was for MP and not MLA...That same candidate continued to win that MP seat a few more times (once even under DMK)...

Another interesting fact about USV. The movie ran for 32 days in a very small town Chinnalapatti in Madurai district. The total population of the town is 35000 during the movie release and they sold more than 50000 tickets for that movie. The theatre owner's son did bachelors with me and he told me this during our college days. This is equivalent to 1 crore people watching this movie from chennai alone. Other than USV no other movies crossed 20 days in that small town.

I had to post Mr.Mukta Srinivasan's comments because he had never taken a MGR movie and was supposed to be taking Sivaji movies more . While making Idayakani, MGR must have been around 55 or 56 years ! Really shocking to note such news.
