U are wrong, nakkereran.

William Renshaw was the 1st player to win 6 wimbledon titles in a row.

But that was not in the open era.

In his time, the player winning the title had to play only the final the next year.

In the open era, it is borg & now federer.

what is the maximum runs scored off a single ball in test matches and who scored those

Talking cricket in general, there are many stories, most apocryphal, that come around from time to time about the ball being lost in long grass on the village green and the batsmen running plenty before it's eventually found or declared lost. In Test cricket, however, the most runs off one ball without overthrows or penalties was equalled many times today - it's only six. As details are unavailable for every ball, it is difficult to pinpoint the highest ever scored from one ball, although Bill Frindall recalls Alan Knott scoring seven with a push to cover that resulted in two lots of overthrows.

If this story is true, however, it is undoubtedly the most runs scored off a single ball in first-class cricket. Recounted by Tony Deyal in the Trinidad Express on November 14, 1998, it reads: "Also in Australia, an invasion of locusts made visibility so difficult at a match that the game had to be abandoned. The most runs off one ball, in the days before limits were placed, also happened in Australia. Victoria, playing against Western Australia, scored 286 runs off one hit, the first delivery in the match. The ball was hit into the a branch of a very tall tree. The umpire disallowed the claim for "lost ball" because the ball was visible. While the batsmen were running, the players sent for an axe to cut down the tree but none was found. The ball was eventually shot down by one of the players using a rifle, but in the excitement nobody thought of catching the ball." Alas, no such match exists in our first-class records, so its veracity is very doubtful.

Its the handling the ball incident.

Steve Waugh in an ‘act of foolishness for a split second’ decided to handle the ball after attempting a sweep shot. Steve was so nervous after the huge appeal from the Indians for an lbw shout that he patted the ball away with his hand

http://www.cricketfundas.com/indauschen01.html[/tscii:64a04690ff]

P_R
14th September 2008, 05:14 PM
Yes. In the pic you see the appeal is for lbw (as Steve Waugh is seen in the act of tapping the ball away). It was an instinctive act from him. I was there and a chorus of voices in the gallery immediately shouted : "Hey! that's out". Not sure if audience at other grounds follow the game and its rules as carefully as the ones in Chepauk.

Ok so 4 remains

Hmm you can say statistics - even that would be a misleading clue.

These two are among the list of players who share a unique distinction.
Surely the first one should be recognizable. He is one of the 1992 World Cup Captains.

Look carefully at the face of the second one, you can see some resemblance to his popular descendants.

Who has taken the most number of wickets in Ranji Trophy? Venkatraghavan ? I know for sure he is leading wicket taker for TN - over 500 wickets. Not sure about All India.

No its Madanlal!!
Wikipedia says the record is held by one Rajinder Goel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajinder_Goel)

Venkatraghavan is the second.

Madan lal has 625 wickets but somewhere I remember reading that Madan lal is the highest wicket taker in ranji trophy.. anyhow sorry for this!!

Yeah.
cricinfo credits Madanlal with 625 first class wickets.
Unfortunately they don't have a searchable database for Ranji.

Here is a Ranji record archive (http://cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Records/Series/Ranji_Trophy/Bowling_Records/Most_Career_Wickets.html)that has Goel and Venkat at the head of the list. It says Madanlal has 351. I find that hard to believe.
Or perhaps 625-351 where in Duleep, Deodhar etc. Highly unlikely.

Anyway, our domestic tournaments need to have better record organization. cricinfo is the best bet, but somehow they don't seem to pay as much attention as they do to international matches. Hopefully soon....

It was at a match played in 1971 between Australia and Rest of the World XI.

Gavaskar and Engineer opened for the W XI.

W XI was bundled for a paltry 59. Lillee took 8 wickets for 29 runs. W XI was asked to follow on and lost its first wicket of Engineer for 4 runs as the score was 9, all in the first session. So Farouk Engineer has the distinction of getting out twice in one session

Who was the only player to have won the Man of the Match in an ODI match? He did not score a single run, did not take a single wicket and he was not the captain in that match.

This is actually Gus Logie, Nov 86 v Pak. I recall watching that game on TV. DD started the coverage a few min late and Pak had already lost their first wicket. The cam focussed on Logie chasing a ball and the commentator(could have been Cozier) mentioned him running 100m in XX.nn seconds.

All this was before Logie got into the act of 3 ct's and 2 ro's.

I and my friend used to watch Logie return the ball to the keeper, a casual overarm flick with little strength. We experienced great success in hitting the stumps and used to refer to our invention as the "Logie Throw"!!

During the 4th test in Ahmedabad, suddenly during the 4th day the crowd became wild and started throwing stones and other items against the pak. fielders. I have a hazy recollection of this...I only remember watching Vengsarkar get his 100 on that day(mar 8 87). Ind made 323. After Vengarkar got his 100, Akram ran through the innings.

Pak's slow batting deserved the stoning that test...Kapil was on tv the evening of Day 1 berating them for scoring 130-4 in a days play.

quick word on roland.

his accident was worse than ayrton's. many watched his death live on tv. it was terrible and happened less than 24 hrs after Barrichello's accident on the same track on friday practice (his crash was the most spectacular, no idea how he survived).

an emergency meeting between drivers was arranged and it was headed by .... Senna. Senna in fact had an Austrian (roland's nationality) flag on his cockpit during the race. He wanted to dedicate the victory to Roland.

But then it happened... An accident which changed the landscape of the sport.

so 2 deaths in 2 days (2 in 1994).

Name the bowler with highest number of wickets in Ranji trophy yet never played for India?

Rajindar Goel. Bedi's shadow. Gavaskar wrote some very nice things about him in a book.

Ok, Goel had a contemporary who went through the same fate as him despite excelling for his Ranji side. He didnt finish above Goel but he was quite high in the list and his name is always taken with Goel in the context of "one of the best bowlers to have not played for India". Name him.

Goel was an easy one. This is difficult question. I know he was a spinner. Idhai sonnadhukku edhavadhu mark thara koodaadha. :D
