Often we listen to songs that we feel deserves more appreciation or we discover songs that somehow escaped the attention of listeners or were masked by other popular songs from the same movie. The joy of sharing such discoveries with others could be boundless.
This thread is going to do exactly that.
Songs we host could be really rare or not so rare. We are not limiting to just hosting them.
Many of the songs will be analyzed in detail by carnatic vocalist Mrs Charumathi M.
We are going to start with one song a week. We will try our best to upload the songs in tfmpage but in rare occassions we might just give you the song link.
Finally, if you feel you have a song that you want to share it with rest of us or if you want us to load a particular song, please let us know and we will try our maximum best to meet your request. You can reach us here (http://forumhub.mayyam.com/cgi-bin/mailit.pl) .

Pick #976

Song: kAthal alaigaL
Film: Jaganmohini
Music: Vijaya Krishnamoorthi
Lyrics: Vaali
Singers: P.Susheela, S.P.Balasubramaniam
Year: 1979

Nice duet!

The original Jaganmohini starring Jayamalini, Narasimharaju, Prabha and others is a classic. Jayamalini was still in shape and exposed no less than three-quarters of her skin throughout the film. Animals and kuttichathans provided entertainment to children. The film was a huge success in both Telugu and Tamil(dubbed).

Film: Uruvangal Maralam
Music: S.V.Ramanan
Lyrics: One of (Vairamuthu, Raghu)
Singers: S.P.Balasubramanyam
Year: 1983

Uruvangal Maralam starring Y.G.Mahendran and Suhasini in the lead had many famous stars doing bit roles and guest appearances. One of them, Kamalahasan, dances for today's pick. Back in the days Kamal's disco songs were so popular young fans looked forward to those dance numbers in every Kamal film and thoroughly enjoyed them. Additional fun in today's pick was Bindhu Ghosh dancing with Kamal.

madhu,
If I remember correctly what I read many years ago Bindhu Ghosh used to be a slim, young and beautiful group dancer (extra) in the 1960s. She was known as Vimala then. Gangai Amaram gave her the name "Bindhu Ghosh" after she became fat and turned to comedy in Kozhi Koovuthu.

Pick #982

Song: mOhanamARA
Film: Maya Kuthirai
Music: Ghantasala
Lyrics: ?
Singer: ?
Year: 1949

Maya Kuthirai starred Anjalidevi and A.Nageswara Rao in the lead. When the beautiful young Anjalidevi started playing lead roles in Telugu cinema in the mid to late 40s she became very famous very quickly. Soon she was imported into Tamil cinema and would be a top star in Tamil cinema too for many years to come. Same as the Hindi film industry Tamil film industry never hesitated to import talented beauties from non-Tamil regions even as early as the mid 1930s (Asvathamma, M.V.Rajamma, S.Varalaskhmi, Shantha Apte, ...). Maya Kuthirai was dubbed from the hit Telugu film Keelugurram. Anjalidevi played a vamp in this manthra-thanthra-mayajala film.

Today's pick was probably considered very modern in its time. It has a clear influence of the 1940s Hollywood. The song, the dance sequence and the fashion (hair and clothes) were all influenced by the 1940s Hollywood.

Is the singer MLV? Someone fill in, please.

http://raretfm.mayyam.com/stream/pow07/mohanamara_mk.rm

Part of the information in the post was obtained off the internet.

8th January 2010, 07:34 AM
Neel: Most songs in Keelugurram in Telugu was sung by the famous C Krishnaveni not to be confused with (Jikki Krishnaveni). I have all the songs of the telugu film. Seems to me it is C Krishnaveni singing this song.

As you had told about Bindhu Ghosh, there is
also anotheractress who just played club dancer in few movies and later played the
leading role in the super duper hit movie
SHANKARABARANAM. yes,your guess is right.
Actress Manju Bhargavi who played the classical dancer heroine in Shankarabharanam,
would be one of the group dancers with
kamalhassan in "sorgam Madhuvile" song in the movie "Sattam en kayil".

Song: nAn nIrOdaiyil
Film: Oru Kai Osai
Music: M.S.Viswanathan
Lyrics: One of (Muthulingam, Chidambaranathan, Viswam, Bhairavi)
Singer: S.Janaki
Year: 1980

A very sensuous song picturized on the very conservative Asvini. Oru Kai Osai was probably the only outing in Tamil for Asvini in which she could tease her love interest, sing a duet with the hero, get wet in the rain and show her fun side instead of moping around throughout the film.

SJ never disappoints in such songs and she keeps it very clean in this one. MSV, always the genius, comes up with the tune to fit the theme. The lyricist comes up with romantic lyrics that would make anyone feel shy when heard at the right moment.

Pick #986

Song: anbE enthan munnAlE
Film: Aravalli
Music: G.Ramanathan
Lyrics: One of (A.Maruthakasai, Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram, Villiputhan)
Singers: Jikki, A.M.Raja
Year: 1957

Nice song!

Aravalli produced by Modern Theaters starred S.G.Eshwar, Mynavathi, G.Varalakshmi, V.Gopalakrishnan, M.S.Draupadhi and others. The story is about a queen named Aravalli, played by G.Varalakshmi, who runs an alli rajyam where men are treated as slaves and with disrespect. Aravalli's daughter Alangaravalli, played by Mynavathi, is in love with Allimuthu, played by S.G.Eshwar, who rebels against Aravalli.

Who is this S.G.Eshwar anyway? Tall, masculine and goodlooking but never to be seen again. Mynavathi, sister of Pandari Bai, was in a few other Tamil films. G.Varalakshmi, the maid of constant sorrow, cried an ocean in films like Harichandira and Nalla Thangaal, for a change gets to play an arrogant woman in Aravalli.

Today's pick was picturized on the handsome S.G.Eshwar and the adorable Mynavathi.

Pick #991

Song: vAzvil thAnE
Film: Digambara Samiyar
Music: G.Ramanathan & S.M.Subbiah Naidu
Lyrics: One of (Ka.Mu.Sheriff, A.Maruthakasi, K.P.Kamatchisundaram, Kannadasan, Thanjai Ramiahdas)
Singer: K.V.Janaki
Year: 1950

Digambara Samiyar produced by Modern Theaters is the screen version of a detective novel written by the then popular fiction writer Vaduvoor K. Duraiswami Iyengar. The lead character Digambara Samiyar was played by M.N.Nambiyar. Others stars include Narasimhabharathi, M.S.Draupadi, Lakshmiprabha and M.G.Chakrapani. Some songs in the film were tunes borrowed from Hindi.

Today's pick was picturized on M.S.Draupadhi who paired with Narasimhabharati. Draupadhi started her film career in the early 1940s as a teen. A small woman but a fine actress with a great screen presence, Draupadhi acted in films for nearly two decades playing lead characters or dominant supporting roles. Some of her films include Gumasthavin Penn(1941), Digambara Samiyar(1950), Andaman Kaithi(1952), Velaikkaran(1952), Pasiyin Kodumai(1952), Inspector(1953), Raththa Pasam(1954), Puthu Yugam(1954), Aravalli(1957). She was also an actress in the TKS brothers' theater group. Not much more information is available about this fine actress.

Usha,
Guessing that you did not expect a sad song. Draupadhi's parents try to force her into marriage with one of the villains in the film. She runs away from home to escape the marraige and her abusive mother. She is in love with the nice guy Narasimhabharati who protects her from the villains. People in the town gossip about her. Draupadhi sings the song in this context.

Nature is so unfair. Or else it would not move so much beauty and talent into one family. The beautiful dancing sisters Lalita and Padmini pair up for the dance sequence of today's pick. They tease the bride and groom at a wedding. A lovely light dance with perfect expressions and gestures by the sisters. Of course the two singing voices are absolutely cute too.

Song: thenRalE vArAyO
Film: Vazhvile Oru Naal
Music: T.G.Lingappa & C.N.Pandurangam
Lyrics: One of (Thanjai Ramiahdas, C.A.Lakshmanadas, Ku.Sa.Krishnamoorthi, K.S.Gopalakrishnan)
Singers: U.R.Jeevaratnam, T.M.Sounderarajan
Year: 1956

Today's pick is another rare combination of voices. U.R.Jeevaratnam was a singing star of the 1940s. She made her debut as the lead actor in the film Bhakta Gowri(1941). A singer with a full voice and a unique tone U.R.Jeevaratnam went on to act and sing in many films in the 1940s until she married and retired from acting. In Vazhvile Oru Naal she is credited as "Isaikkuyil ThamizhisaiVaani U.R.Jeevaratnam" which shows the respect and admiration she enjoyed in the industry.

Vazhvile Oru Naal directed by A.Kasilingam with dialog by A.V.P.Asaithambi is one of the early family drama masala films. A loving couple is separated by greedy and vile bad guys. They grow old living apart. The son of the couple grows up and falls in love with the villain's daughter. To top it off, the son is now a police officer. You get the picture. This story has been recycled I don't know how many times in several languages in Indian films. The first writer who came up with this story and the first filmmaker who adapted it should both have their pictures permanently hanging on the Indian Cinema Museum's Wall of Shame.

However, today's song sequence is very beautiful. Sivaji Ganesan and G.Varalakshmi secretly meet in the moonlight and sing this song. The two actors have such great chemistry. The joy in their eyes, the smile on their faces, and their romance is all so real and believable. Very lovely!

Pick #1000

Song: Ayiram ANdugaL
Film: Adukkumalli
Music: Shankar-Ganesh
Lyrics: ?
Singer: Vani Jairam
Year: 1979

And we arrive at the 1000 mark. YAY!!! On this happy musical occasion I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who has helped make this possible.

First of all, thanks to RR for his support, and for providing a platform to play so many rare melodies for all of us around the world to enjoy. The unheard songs, the disappeared songs and the rare songs that we play here have recaptured so many old memories for us, good and bad. Times that will never come back. But with the help of the songs we can look back at those times and even taste them, if not relive them. The songs also create new memories. And then there is the element of surprise. You don't know what song will be posted next, and sometimes when it will be posted :) . Most of the time even I don't know what song will be posted next, until the song is uploaded and the post is submitted :) . For making all these happen, "Thank you, RR!".

Second of all, for posting nearly half of the one thousand songs, for the witty comments that accompanied the songs and for the depth of knowledge when it comes to rare songs, I say "Thank you, Ramki!".

So many members and non-members have contributed to this thread by sending songs and song details. Without their contribution we couldn't have come this far. Nor would we have the variety in the selection of songs. I thank all the contributors for their effort, support and for being there to count on at all times. I am not mentioning names because I am sure I will miss a name or two and that won't be nice.

It takes a lot of encouragement to be motivated to keep this going. For that I thank all the members who regularly visit and post to share their knowledge, opinion, and their listening experience. Again, I am not mentioning names because I don't want to leave out any by mistake.

I thank all who listen to the songs but do not post (Hiii!!! I know you are there!!!), for being good ol' music fans. I invite you all to share your knowledge, opinion and your listening experience with the rest of the world in the future.

If not for the internet so many of us will be in the dark about so many rare songs. If not for the internet so many of us would simply have to keep our rare song collection and our knowledge about the artistes to ourselves and not be able to share it with others. For that, finally, I thank the internet. :notworthy:

On to today's pick... Adukkumalli starred Sujata and Vijayakumar in the lead. Being a K.S.Gopalakrishnan film the story was obviously a heavy family drama built around a main female character (Sujata). The song expresses that she loves her life in spite of the poverty and hardship she faces. Life is beautiful! In VJ's voice!

Happy 1000th!

Pick #1003

Song: mana mOhananE
Film: Gnanasoundari
Music: S.V.Venkataraman
Singers: P.A.Periyanayaki, T.R.Mahalingam
Lyrics: Kambadasan
Year: 1948

Gnanasoundari starred M.V.Rajamma and T.R.Mahalingam in the lead. M.V.Rajamma started her acting career in her early teens in the mid 1930s in Kannada and quickly made her way into Tamil films. By the time Gnanasoundari was made the skinny teenager had transformed into a stunning young woman and a mature performer. Even as a teen she played the lead opposite big names such as P.U.Chinnappa and T.K.S. brothers. Some of her other early Tamil films include Yayathi(1938), Uthamaputhiran(1940), Madanakamarajan(1941), Gumasthavin Penn(1941) and Velaikkari(1949). She did many more Tamil films later on playing mother roles, one of the most famous being Karnan(1964) in which she played Kunthi.

Today's pick is a dream sequence picturized on the handsome T.R.Mahalingam and the beautiful M.V.Rajamma. A lot of veLLai udai thEvathais dance for the interludes, and that is the reason why the song takes so many unexpected turns during its course. TRM dreams and then describes the dream to MVR. She mischievously keeps questioning him to make him tell more of his dream and TRM very cutely makes it up as he goes.

Song: nenjcamE anjcAthE

Singers: P.G.Venkatesan
Lyrics: T.N.Rajappa
Year: 1948

After surviving death ordered by her stepmother Gnanasoundari's misery continues at her husband's house. She leaves the house and wanders in the forest hoping to simply perish. Today's pick is the background song for the scene. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is depicted during the scene.

P.G.Venkatesan who lent his voice for today's pick was the leading man in the first ever Tamil talkie Kalidas(1931) in which he played poet Kalidas.

T.N.Rajappa wrote the dialogs for Gnanasoundari and the lyrics for today's pick.

Our final pick from Gnanasoundari. The two singing voices just shine in this duet.

A silent film Gnanasundari was first made in 1929 by director A.Narayanan. He made it again in 1935 as a talkie titled Gnanasoundarya. Citadel and Gemini made their own versions of the film again in 1948. After the success of Citadel's version Gemini's S.S.Vasan decided to recall his unsuccessful version and permanently shelve it. Gemini's version starred M.K.Radha and V.S.Suseela in the lead.

Song: prEmA prEmA
Film: Madanakamarajan
Music: M.D.Parthasarathi & S.Rajeswara Rao
Singers: V.V.Sadagopan
Lyrics: Papanasam Sivan & Kothamangalam Subbu
Year: 1941

http://raretfm.mayyam.com/stream/pow07/prema_prema.rm

V.V.Sadagopan was a famous carnatic vocalist, composer and musicologist. He has done enormous amount of research in music, written many articles and given many lectures. He served as a Professor at Delhi University, as a member of several university boards, as a member of AIR audition panel and as a member of the experts committee at Music Academy, Chennai. He set many verses of Kambaramayanam, Azhvar Pasurams and Thirukkural to music and performed them. He was also a prolific writer in Tamil and English. As you can see V.V.Sadagopan's contribution to music is invaluable. Later in his life VVS decided to focus on teaching music to children. He composed simple children's songs and taught those to children himself, which surprised everyone.

The tall and goodlooking VVS starred in films such as Adhirshtam(1939), Madanakamarajan(1941), Venuganam(1941) and Navayuvan(1942). He had a bright voice with a soft tone that set him apart. Wish he had sung more in TFM than he did. But all of his films except Madanakamarajan seem to have not fared well at the box-office. VVS quit acting and went back to being a fulltime musician.

Madanakamarajan produced by Gemini starred V.V.Sadagopan in the title role. The talented and adorable K.L.V.Vasantha played his love interest Premavalli (hence the song prEma). Sundaribai, who is deranged by her love for Madanakamarajan, made her debut in this film. The rest of the cast includes K.R.Chellam(looks like Kanika), N.Krishnamoorthi, M.V.Rajamma, Kothamangalam Subbu and others. More on K.L.V.Vasantha at a later date.

Song: pAr en magaLE
Film: Koondukkili
Music: K.V.Mahadevan
Singers: (radha)Jayalakshmi
Lyrics: One of (Thanjai Ramiahdas, Vindhan, Ka.Mu.Sheriff, A.Maruthakasi)
Year: 1954

Koondukkili starred M.G.Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, B.S.Saroja, Kuchalakumari, Angamuthu and others. The film was directed by T.R.Ramanna. The screenplay and dialogs were were by Vinthan, a popular social acivitst and reformist writer of the time. Though activist and reformist writers had existed in the literary and political world in Tamilnadu for many decades prior, they entered the film industry starting the late 1940s where they found voice for their ideas and a means to communicate to the masses easily. Annadurai, Karunanidhi, Bharatidasan, Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram, Vinthan, etc. are some of the names that come to mind. Koondukkili deals with the issues of poverty, greed, abuse of women and the poor. However, all the social activism and reformism seem to have dissipated by the end of the 1950s. The 1960s had a different trend with its sentimental family dramas, love stories and formula masalas. Social activism was mainly limited to the propaganda songs in MGR films in the 1960s.

Today's pick is one of the very few songs sung by Jayalakshmi for TFM. It was picturized on B.S.Saroja. After her husband MGR goes to jail under unfortunate circumstances Saroja is left with no money or house to live. Her husband's friend Sivaji tries to help her but he has his sinister motive, to have a relationship with Saroja. After she repeatedly refuses his attemtpts to help her, Sivaji starts to sadisticially taunt her. Saroja now homeless walks the streets of the town, carrying her sick son, to a place where the homeless live on a sidewalk. The song plays in the background.

Today's pick was picturized on Kuchalakumari. The young and cute Kuchalakumari has a major crush on Sivaji and constantly annoys him with her attention. When Sivaji asks her why she keeps following him and annoying him she answers his question with this song. At the end of the song an angry Sivaji slaps Kuchalakumari on the cheek. Song: alliyin mun
Film: Sarvadhikari
Music: S.Dakshinamoorthi
Singer: P.Leela
Lyrics: ?
Year: 1951

Modern Theatres lived up to their name. When the rest of the Tamil film industry was producing films with mythological stories and sentimental family dramas T.R.Sundaram founded Modern Theatres in Salem and produced action films, mysteries, war films, etc. Modern Theatres was certainly modern in thinking and provided forty five years of entertainment (1937-1982). Through their films the company promoted many action heroes (M.N.Nambiyar, M.G.Ramachandran, Manohar, S.G.Eshwar, Jaisankar, etc.). While some of Modern Theatres' films may be recycled Hollywood stories and some of the sequences Hollywood-inspired one cannot deny that all films produced by Modern Theatres were great entertainment and served as an inspiration to many future filmmakers and that it discovered and/or promoted great many artistes and technicians.

Sarvadhikari, an action film, produced by Modern Theatres starred M.G.Ramachandran, Anjalidevi, M.N.Nambiyar, V.Nagaiah and others.

Film: Nadu Iravil
Music: S.Balachandar
Lyrics: vE.Lakshmanan
Singer: L.R.Eswari

Happy Valentine's Day!

Nadu Iravil is a thriller produced and directed by S.Balachandar. The film starred Pandaribai, Major Sundarrajan, Sowcar Janaki and many others. S.Balachandar composed the songs and D.B.Ramachandran did the background score (re-recording).

Major Sundarrajan and Pandaribai are a wealthy old couple living in isolation because they were rejected by their family who disapproved of their marriage. Now that the couple is old and dying the relatives come back hoping to inherit their wealth.

The song in two tempos was picturized on V.R.Thilakam and Kalpana(not Kannada Kalpana) who claim to be Major's nieces and try to get close to the old couple by entertaining them.

I landed upon this song Panineer Poo Thelikkum quite accidentally in devaragam.com under gangai amaran (malayalam!!!) songs. I did not believe it was him, someone else and reghu kumar sounds like it! Good job. An excellent song, and flawless melody.

It will be nice to find melodies of this level of perfection, not story telling with loose ends, cut and paste stanzas or lullabies or limericks

In the posts on Savithiri(1941) the male voice was incorrectly credited to Y.V.Rao. According to a recent article by Randor Guy the voice belongs to the composer Rajagopala Sarma.

Have been busy lately, but had to come here to listen to this VJ pick! (thanks for the egroup alert!) Superb example of VJs range and ease with difficult compositions. Amazing!
I agree with Usha, this does have traces of MSV in the arrangement. Gandharvakanni followed Jagan Mogini I think...but flopped big time.

Thanks also for featuring Pani Neer (there's a Malayalam original that goes "Manjil Poo Viriyum(or Malarum?) ..Thazhvaraiyil". Soulful KJY!

Trivia :) Madhuri won the best female vocalist contest in a competition in which composer Devarajan was a judge. Devarajan reportedly told her that he would give her a chance to sing in movies if she could perfect her Malayalam pronunciation/diction. She did; and Devarajan kept his word; and several Malayalam and a few Tamil movie songs followed!!! :)

KPAC Lalitha is the wife (widow) of director Bharathan. She is not "Wife of the wife of famous Malayalam director Bharadhan", as Nidhi80 stated. :)

By the way, KPAC stands for Kerala People's Arts Club, a famous drama group. Several writers, actors and other artists who worked at KPAC later moved into the movie scene; but kept the KPAC title with their names.

tfmlover -

Glad you approve! In my memory, that song is all SJ :-) (but glad to discover that it is a duet!)

tanthya -

"Rare", in my books, does not always (and necessarily) mean "lost and obscure". My criteria also includes songs that have not been given their deserved air-time, songs that have been overshadowed by other popular (and popularized) tunes from the same album, songs that I have not heard for more than 20 years :-)...
For example, when we think of Vellikkizhamai Viradham, we always think of "Deviyin Thirumugam" and not "Aasai, Anbu Izhaigalinaalae..."
Similarly, Malligai Mogini brings to mind "Maegangalae, Ingu Vaarungalae" not "Kaadhal Oru Kovil Polae..."
Hence, the film might not be rare, but (to me) the song is.
Thanks for sharing the download link. My memory doesn't just drop, it also adds: Sevvalli gained a consonant over the years! :-) Lovely, though.

Song: nI sollu nIyE sollu
Film: Kumarippen
Music: M.S.Viswanathan
Lyrics: ?
Singers: P.B.Srinivas, L.R.Eswari
Year: 1966

May be it is all about being "unusual". Making a singer known for in-your-face sensuality to be shy and coy. Wrapping a regular love song with a veil of childish quarrel. The end result is magical. Some of LRE's other shy outings like ammammA kELadi thOzi and kAthOduthAn nAn pAduvEn are of course classics. PBS as smooth as always. Kumarippen starred Ravichandran and Jayalalitha in the lead.
