Finally they gave it to Scorcese. I See this more of a sympathy Oscar, like they did with Newman and Pacino. The Departed is a damned good thriller for a normal director, but for Scorsese, it's not his best work. But what the hell, I am happy for the poor guy who shoulda got it long time ago.

Here's the list of all the nominees + winners...

The word around here is that the Oscars was way too wrong, due to long speeches and all. I was too tired to stay up for ALL of it, but there were many memorable aspects like the comedian-attack song with Will Ferrell, Jack Black singing about comedians always being left out from the Oscars. Also Will Smith's son presenting an award. So cute!

Ellen Degeneres look uncomfortable initially but then eased down and cracked some funny jokes...Her best statement/joke of the night

“Jennifer Hudson was on American Idol and America didn’t vote for her, and yet she’s here with an Oscar nomination.

“And then, Al Gore is here, and America DID vote for him, then...”

 So hilarious!! :rotfl: :rotfl: [/tscii:f9b4e62f56]

Very true!! I too am happy for Scorsese. I haven't seen any of the Oscar nominations, but from the reviews, it looks like The Departed belongs to his 'others' list: like Casino and Kundun. Watched Raging Bull over the weekend, and all I could think was how Scorsese had been given a raw deal by the academy every single time. I hope they give him a life-time achievement award or something to make up for their errors.

These are my favorite MS movies in the order of my preference

1. Raging bull
2. Goodfellas
3. Taxi driver
3. The Departed
4. The king of comedy, Casino, Gangs of NY

The top 3 should have won him an oscar, its a shame on them. Even Kubrick did not win an oscar :)

Havent seen the others :P

[tscii:b63772cd51]An interview with Alan Mak, the co-director of 'Infernal Affairs' in this issue of Time (http://aolsvc.timeforkids.kol.aol.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1594998,00.html)
His views on Departed and what should have won the best picture award (not really complimentary  ):

"How did you feel when you heard Scorsese was remaking your film?"

I thought, "That's great." I'm a fan of Scorsese. When I was younger, I watched Taxi Driver, Goodfellas and Casino. That's why I'm disappointed. I thought Scorsese would make a different movie. I understand they really liked Infernal Affairs. But, for me, if I take a story from somewhere, I'll take only the soul of the story. Nowadays, if you want to remake Romeo and Juliet, you have to change it.

Did The Departed deserve to win?

To give Scorsese Best Director—everyone understands that. Best Picture? That's a little bit incredible. Is it impolite to say that?

So what should have won?

I really liked Babel. For me, it's something new.[/tscii:b63772cd51]

Best Supp Actor: Javier Bardem
Best Director(s): Coen Brothers

Similar predictions, but I think TWBB will win at least one from Best picture, best director, and best screenplay..

Aside: Heath Ledger found dead. Drug overdose. RIP

Juno should sweep some awards.

Preferably best original screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Garner) Best Actress (this is a tough one for young Ellen Page to bag amidst heavy competition from the likes of Keira Knightley and all).

Not much for her, actually! I was surprised she played this supporting role when the movie was half-way... But in the end, she did have some emoting to do though! :)

i don't think Kiera Knightley was nominated for Atonement  ...
Jennifer Garner was just ok, I didn't think there was much scope for her role in Juno...

from list of Oscar movies nominated, i have only seen Juno and Michael Clayton...

Seriously,I want an explanation to this movie.I don't know whether I'm a crook or not.Damn me for saying GF was overrated. After watching it repeatedly,I would say:
1.The Goodfellas
2.Taxi Driver
3.The Departed
4.Mean Streets
5.Raging bull
And that 5th place is because I've seen only 5 MS movies.I never got why this is hailed as a classic.Just because its the first ever sport movie?Because De Niro was at his best? What makes it better than Goodfellas or Taxi driver or even departed?

Venki, I hope you are aware that Scorcese himself saw Raging Bull as a modern version of Othello. Try seeing the movie again from that perspective and I can assure you that you won't be disappointed. Also try watching the special feature interview with Scorcese. Scorcese unravels the motifs and nuances as he intended them to be. Very enlightening.
