dinesh, usually it's like this,

Malaysian company buys the rights and sell in M'sia and export to s'pore. S'pore had the rights Long time ago. Now it doesnt. Singaporean company ( i mean M'sian Veenai/alaiosai/5sta) hav nothing to do with t series version. its just the exporting dealer who does the same job as bringing songs frm m'sia to s'pore. so u msian guys get to listen to almost evry song b4 it gets from the company to s'pore. Just enquire abt shops that sell india import cd. u can find out easy as all have usually no combo and also cost cheaper. if u see the cover, it looks just like swades. and spelt DeSam instead of Desam, in tamil. The 'S' for 'Swaram' and not'sakram'

'Swades' Surprises

´Swades´ :-

One fails to understand why certain sections of the trade and media tries to play the same game , over and over again , throughout the week , only to be exposed on Saturday and ´Swades´ was not an exception . We were led to believe that ´Swades´ was a flop from day one and the opening a mere 18-40 percent . The collections on the next Saturday once again had another story to tell as the collections given below will highlight . The Bombay territory and South are safe as a house . Delhi city gets a decent 90 lacs , if we dont compare it with the recent Shah Rukh releases . But ´Swades´ is not at all like the recent Shah Rukh movies . Instead of giving credit to the makers and cast members of ´Swades´ the same critics who advocate "change" criticise the change , when it takes place . The only place where the collections are ordinary are West U.P. (part of Delhi-U.P.) and some stations of Central India .

In the US ´Swades´ has collected (upto and including the 2nd weekend) $793,000. It is about $100,000 less than ´Mujhse Shaadi Karogi´ at the end of its run. ´Mujhse Shaadi Karogi´ was the third highest grosser in the US this year, but ´Swades´ is expected to overtake that in the next week or so. In Australia ´Swades´ collected $77,000(US). In the UK it has collected 191,000 pounds or $369,000 which once again is low for a Shah Rukh Khan movie there .

First week collections :-

Bombay and Thane - 1,77,84,624 from 47 cinemas (3 on F.H.)

Ahmedabad - 27,06,211 from 9 cinemas ( 3 unrecd.)

Anand - 5,60,937

Rajkot - 2,29,787 (1 unrecd.)

Jamnagar - 2,86,000

Bhavnagar - 3,12,055

Pune - 44,39,487 from 8 cinemas

Nasik - 9,46,617 from 4 cinemas

Goa - 6,70,000 from 3 cinemas

Delhi - 90,22,226 from 17 cinemas

Noida - 9,50,471

Kaushambi - 5,16,785

Ghaziabad - 8,96,987 from 5 cinemas

Kanpur - 5,01,645 from 3 cinemas

Lucknow - 9,18,766 from 2 cinemas

Agra - 2,51,750

Allahabad - 1,70,717

Meerut - 1,70,056

Moradabad - 52,000

Bulandshahar - 50,000

Bareilly - 67,421

Dehradun (Uttaranchal) - 2,50,042 from 2 cinemas(1 unrecd.)

Gurgaon (East Punjab) - 15,13,365 from 3 cinemas

Nagpur - 5,56,674 from 3 cinemas

Jabalpur - 1,56,050

Amravati - 1,41,522

Akola - 1,83,235

Raipur - 1,46,166

Durg - 1,60,318

Jalgaon - 1,41,522

Yavatmal - 74,526

Indore - 6,22,000 from 2 cinemas (2 on F.H.)

Ujjain - 55,000

Jaipur - 1,94,236

Jodhpur - 5,02,800

Kota - 7,75,790 from 2 cinemas

Calcutta - 34,80,792 from 12 cinemas

Hyderabad (gross) - 27,82,451 from 9 cinemas (2 on F.H.)

Bangalore - 11,38,887 from 2 screens

Vijaywada (gross) - 3,34,591

Madras - 19,60,966 from 3 cinemas

First week collections : 5,68,58,579 from 161 cinemas (reported)

First week total (calculated) : All India 9.35 cr - 9.50 cr

Verdict :- To say that ´Swades´ is already a hit will be as big a lie as saying that ´Swades´ is already a flop . Chances are that the 20 crore to 22 crore movie , distributed by the makers themselves (who already have 6 crore music right in their kitty)looks like heading for an average status from here .But that will depend on the second week collections .

Did you have to post the WHOLE article here? A link would've sufficed.

In any case, it's time to look deeper into these so-called "objective" reports. The author of that article is one "Abid", who under the nick of "lastango" is a very familiar presence on the planetbollywood discussion forum, and you don't have to be a veteran there to detect that Abid's a rabid SRK-fan who will do what he can to provide a positive spin on the outcome of Swades. I can point to numerous sites that say the opposite, for eg. -
http://www.indiatarget.com/movies/box_office/bo_report.shtml

Those expecting reinforcement of their fandom from public reactions will have to look elsewhere.

'Swades' is smash hit abroad
IANS
Friday, December 24, 2004

Never mind the lukewarm response it has received at home, Ashutosh Gowariker's "Swades" has opened to smashing box office responses worldwide.

According to a press release issued by UTV, the co-producers and overseas distributors of the film, it has grossed $424,804 on 74 screens in the first three days of its release across North America, reports Bollywood Trade.

The film has also recorded the third largest per screen average at $6,667 beating heavyweight Hollywood flicks like "Polar Express" and "The Incredibles", and just below "Ocean's Twelve".

In Dubai, it has crossed $175,000 in its opening weekend -- substantially above the previous Shah Rukh Khan starrer "Veer Zaara".

'Swades', the movie that critics/trade experts said would flop on
the day it released, had them citing imaginary collections of 18-40
percent and a fictitious budget varying from 25 to 35 crores
(actually 20 to 22 crores). Well, it has managed to collect 22 crore
worldwide up until the third weekend, with about 14 crores from
India and 7.25 crores from just UK and US.

The collections in the second week, according to the annual issue of
India's number one trade magazine, "maintained well in the
multiplexes but dull otherwise." The movie is looking to be at least
average in India.

Unbeatable Rahman's 'Desam' on top
By Siddhu Warrier, Indo-Asian News Service

Chennai, Jan 17 (IANS) That A.R. Rahman is king seems to be the
verdict of Tamil music fans. His albums have repeatedly topped the
charts. Unsurprisingly, Rahman's latest effort, "Desam", is at the top
for the second week in a row.

1. "Desam" (Music by A.R. Rahman): The music can be summarised in two
words - quintessentially Rahman. The movie has not done badly either,
as Chennai's cine-goers have always liked Shah Rukh Khan. But it is
the music that is creating waves.

2. "Chathurangam" (Music by Vidyasagar): After fast-paced tracks in
"Gillie" and several other movies, with this album Vidyasagar proves
himself adept at composing an entirely different genre of music.

3. "Manmadan" (Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja): Though Raja hit a rich
form with "7 G Rainbow Colony", he has not quite lived up to that with
his compositions for "Manmadan". His run of success, however,
continues, with the album doing as well as has the movie.

4. "7-G Rainbow Colony" (Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja): The album
appears on the path to musical immortality. It has been on the charts
for a long time and appears unlikely to be dislodged soon.

5. "Chellamey" (Music by Harris Jayaraj): What can be said of
"Chellamey" but that its music is delectable and that the videos are
awesome! Whether or not the videos are a key to the success of the
movie, it is clear that "Chellamey" is one of 2004's biggest musical
hits.

I am not sure about the sales of "Desam", but the cassette wrapper is pathetic ... instead of normal "sa" (as in "sattai", "kasappu" etc.,), they have used the other "Sa" (ithai eppadi solRathu ? the sanskrit sounding sa ? :-)) ... and they have translated "written & directed" as "aasiriyar and something else" ... even song titles are given with so many mistakes ...

'Kathal' holds box office top spot
By IANS
Jan 17, 2005, 10:28

Printer friendly page

Chennai, Jan 17 (IANS) Producer Shankar's "Kathal" was hardly expected to be the hit it has turned out to be. This Tamil film is still ruling the box office, a situation that is unlikely to change in the near future.

1. "Kathal" (directed by Balaji Shaktivel): Bharath appears to be having an extended dream run. "Kathal" is his third successive hit. Among his earlier movies are "4 The People", which set Kerala on fire, and "Chellamey", which was a huge hit in Tamil Nadu. Shaktivel, who had earlier directed the Vikram-starrer "Samurai", has made a sensitive love story this time. The success of "Kathal" stands testimony to the importance of a good plot, as opposed to a stunning star cast alone.

2. "Manmadan" (directed by A.J. Murugan): Silambarasan has begun to follow in the footsteps of his illustrious father, T. Rajendran, with this film, entirely his own creation, proving to be a huge hit.

3. "7-G Rainbow Colony" (directed by Selvaraghavan): Yet another week has passed with "Rainbow Colony" continuing to make waves at the box office.

4. "Attahasam" (directed by Saran): Saran wove magic with "Vasool Raja", something he has been unable to do with "Attahasam". It was at the top, ahead of "Manmadan", after its Diwali release. But today the tables have turned with Silambarasan's movie clambering a notch over "Attahasam". However, it is one of Ajit's biggest hits in recent times.

5. "Desam" (directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar): "Desam" is the dubbed version of "Swades". As any Shah Rukh-starrer normally does, "Desam" is pulling the crowds as much as "Swades" in Chennai.

The Baba Kichu tha number appearing in Desam as KEttEnA is very good, IMO, better than most current numbers from other MD's. I wonder what Ananda Vikatan, which wrote rubbish about the music of Baba (London la irundhu telephone la tune sonna ippadi-dhan irukkum), has to say about the music in most movies now.

The nice tune was spoiled by poor lyrics in Baba, IMO.

Un niram pola en niram mAra varam ondru tharuvai Baba ..

In german the title is Heimat. The movie is dubbed in German but the songs will be shown in Hindi with German subtitle.
