We had the following combinations of male singers! and it is like heaven when these combos are on screen in most of the times!

1. IR and SPB.
2. IR and KJY.
3. IR and Jeyachandran.
4. IR and MV.

But Whether Rafi and IR had a chance to work together?

or Rafi was no more while IR emerging?

Whether M.Rafi sang any Tamil song ever?

I think Rafi was no more from 1980/79!

We have missed a lot. If IR and Rafi joined together in 80's, IFM would have reached the Ultimate heights,

I have seen many topics on SPB and Rafi surfing around TFM page.,

I haven't listened a single song of RAFI before i have seen these topics! But after listened to his songs, oh man what voice he had?

Like God is singing for us! truely manly voice,

I would easily quote him as the Best Playback singer ever in india!

KJY and SPB are only the next,

I would rate them as follows!

M.Rafi - 95%
SPB/KJY - 90%
Ghantasala/KK/Mukesh - 90%
Jeyachandran - 88%
A.M.Raja -86%
T.M.S - 75%

Really massive miss not to have Rafi's voice in IR's intrumentals

But i don't know how he is ease with Tamil/telugu. We are clearly seeing S.P.B is struggling a little bit when comes Hindi to pronounce.

Whether IR got only 3 national awards?

1. Sagara sangamam (1984)
2. Sindhu Bairavi (1986)
3. Rudra veena (1989)

National Award committee is the worst board in india, always doing some stupid things.

What about singers?

S.P.B - 6 (1980,1982,1984,1989,1996,1999).
M.Rafi - 2 (1958,1978)
KJY -7 (1973,1974,1977,1983,1988,1992,1994)
T.M.S - ???
Ghantasala/AMRaja - ??

Yes, by the time IR reach top position, Mohd Rafi was no more.
Besides, the noof songs sung by Mohd Rafi were less in the late 70s. Already he was retiring in hindi films.

Giving songs to Mohd Raji IMHO, is like giving a song to Jesudas

Kishore Kumar - SPB

Why not ? It would have clicked when TMS- IR also could give some nice songs !

Imagine Sendhazampoovil vandadum thendral - by Mohd. Raji !

IMHO, Rafi is beyond words but his voice would not have suited TFM. I thought he did sing a few telugu songs but when i heard them it was not so great. His fort was hindi and north india and he had to be there..

The songs quoted above are well rendered above 100 % by the singers..

Be contended with this atleast because MSV didnt get anything

For Sendhoorappoove (16 vayadhinile ) , SJ got national award I think ( give cr to IR )

For many BGMs , IR deserved national award .

These are funniest things to happen in Indian music industry

Iam astonished to know that MSV did not win any NA!!!
Not even when MGR and Karunanidhi were in their capacity to do so!!!

Not that MSV cares too much about it.We have a funny way of honoring artistes after their lifetime.
The National awards themselves have lost a lot of credibility in the past few years.

I read somewhere that IR had requested to not consider him for awards anymore after a point in time. Not sure if its true, but if so it could partly explain why he didnt win more.

if IR were to have worked with Rafi Saheb, he would have come up with a tune appropriate for Rafi Saheb's voice! I dont think any of the songs mentioned above would have fit the ambience of his voice - perhaps, just perhaps, 'Kanne kalaimane' and 'yeh zindagi gale laga le'!

Yes MSV didn't receive any recognition at all, but he deserved a lot.
Infact he was the pioneer long before IR!
Really ashame for the national,

Even M.Rafi didn't get the recognition he deserved at all!

May be it seems like that Rafi's voice not suits south indian languages. This is because he sang one or two songs in telugu, thats all. and they were not great songs.

The above said IR songs were very well rendered by SPB and KJY. Thats true!

Mohammed Rafi's voice glides along the tune, He sings each and every word with ease, He easily goes to higher octave and comes to mid/lower octave.

I have seen many singers screaming/scratching at high pitches., But Rafi is exception. Even SPB cannot sing comfortably with higher notes!

He has all elements with his voice!
*He has good Bass voice with punch or expression, (only KJY has as well).
*Good at High/mid pitches.(TMS is upto some extent only)
* No nasal voice.(like singing with nose-HH/Unnikrishnan etc).
* True manly (heavenly) voice (SPB/KJY).
*Rafi neither had a soft voice nor a heavy (bass) voice but he had a good voice.

Importantly he did not strain at high notes, and voice if at all only became better at higher notes. If you see him singing it will remind you of Janaki. However diff the song is or the note is he will be smiling and singing. It is unthinkable that he cannot sing something.

No! If you see early songs of IR(late 1970's) , there were three main influences!

* The melody part was of MSV shades.
* The harmony and orchestrations is of RDB/SDB'ish.
* Singing style were of sometimes M.Rafi's/Kishore's.
Except the folk songs, others were classics which could easily find a place in MSV/SDB rack!

Example songs!
"Uravugal thodarkathai" from Aval appadithaan had lot of MSV influence and Hindi style. But if you notice cleverly, IR's style of guitar and piano elements were fused with the melody of Jeyachandran's vocal.

So Rafi's voice would have well suited for IR , But question is about the actor?

Which actor suits Rafi's vocals? I think nobody

Ilayaraja really wanted to bring back those days in mid 80's also

Example:

"Pon vaanile ezil ven megame" from "Anbin mugavari"(?) 1984/85,
in this song IR tried to bring back past of SDB/MSV to the present. SPB tried to imitate Rafi, but what to say, he failed!

What makes Rafi to greater heights? It's not only his golden voice, his great humality and gentleness. This incident shows how good he is!

"Remember an obscure 1953 C-grade film called Khoj for which music was scored by Nissar Baazmi, the man who later went to Pakistan and became such a big composer there that even Noorjehan and Mehdi Hassan considered it an honour to sing for him. Yet so long as Nissar Baazmi was in India, he somehow remained a C-grade composer. And at the time he did Khoj, he was literally a nobody.

This was when Baazmi approached Rafi to sing for the maximum Rs 50 that his producer could afford for the rendition of a composition on which he prided himself. And Rafi charged Baazmi just the token Re 1 to produce for him, in Khoj, the memorable Radio Ceylon hit, Chanda ka dil toot gaya roney lage hain sitaare. This Raja Mehdi Ali Khan lyric began with the cry: Mohabbat aur wafaa kis tarah tauheen ki tu ne. What a compelling sense of expression Rafi brought to this tune of a struggling composer!"

Any hindi peoples?
Anybody know the meaning of the following song by M.Rafi
Hum Kisise Kam Nahin (1977) music by RDB

chaand mera dil chaandni ho tum
chaand se hai door chaandni kahaan
laut ke aana hai yahin tumko
jaa rahe ho tum jaao meri jaan

waise to har kadam milenge log sanam
milega saccha pyaar mushkil se
ho dil ki dosti khel nahin koyi
dil se dil hai milta yaar mushkil se
yehi to hai sanam pyaar ka thikana
main hoon (3)

chaand mera dil chaandni ho tum
chaand se hai door chaandni kahaan
laut ke aana hai yahin tumko
jaa rahe ho tum jaao meri jaan
jaao meri jaan, jaao meri

Here is my small lyrics of song for M.Rafi with IR's beats.
ulda of 1977 song "Chand meri dil" (previous post)

Song Situation: (karpanai thango)

Hero (Amitab bachan) and heroine(?) ended up with the love split (reason?), Hero goes to the party given by his friend (unfortunately he is heroine's new friend) Hero gets shocked to see his lover(chandni) is with his friend and his friend wants hero to sing and orchestra playing disco beats, Suddenly hero sings the meloncholic melody!

How is it!

I was wondering if there was any quote from our maestro about Rafi's voice?

irir123
2nd March 2007, 09:34 PM
dakaltiz - IR has mentioned on quite a few occasions thus : "there are many great singers I admire and respect, but there can be only one Rafi!" that says a lot about IR's respect and awe for this great singer!

it is truely a pity that IR never worked with Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Talat Mahmood and Manna Dey (btw, IR gave a stunning "isaiyil thodangudhamma" to Manna Dey's very good clone "Ajoy Chakraborty" in Hey RAM! AC's voice sounds exactly like MD's!)
