"There has to be a catchy word in every song, which is repeated again and again." What Sonu Nigam says is right. A few examples are "Sheela Ki Jawani", "Munni Badnaam Huyi", etc.

"Kuch To Log Kahenge", a popular song from Amar Prem, set in raag Khamaj. Amar Prem (translation: Immortal Love) is a 1972 Hindi drama film directed by Shakti Samanta, based on a Bengali short story Nishi Padma by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay about a school boy, who is ill-treated by his step mother, and becomes friends with a prostitute neighbour. The film stars Sharmila Tagore playing a prostitute with a heart of gold, while Rajesh Khanna in the role of lonely businessman, and Vinod Mehra, adult Nandu, the young child, who they both come to care for.

The film is noted for its music by R.D. Burman, numbers sung by famous playback singers like Kishore Kumar, R.D. Burman's father S.D. Burman and Lata Mangeshkar; lyrics were by Anand Bakshi. At the 1973 Filmfare Awards, Arabinda Mukherjee won the award for Best Screenplay, while Ramesh Pant won the award for Best Dialogue. Also Jehangir Nowrojee won the award for Best Sound.

Toofan Mail ran between Howrah and Delhi. I travelled by that mail twice (1959 and 1962). Not sure if they still have the same name or changed it. I am sure it does not have a steam engine now. Still, it is fun to travel by trains. The letters EIR stand for East Indian Railway ! I went beyond Delhi by train to Kalka to catch the mountain rail to Simla. Try it and have fun! :)

Hi Raj: I must have missed your original posting.

Pran was one of my favorite actors from the older crowd of actors. He acted in reprehensible, evil and villainous roles; but he did those roles with class and style. I remember a scene where he returns to India after living in the West for so many years, and happens to walk into his daughter's wedding ceremony. Someone introduces him to his daughter; and Pran says "Hi!..." in the Western style! WOW, What a classy scene! The expression on his face showed exactly the helplessness a person in his position would feel in such a situation. He had left India when the daughter was not even born; and he never even knew he had a daughter until that moment... (BTW, I don't remember the name of the movie! :) ) There were several other occasions that impressed me about Pran's unique style of acting. I was happy that they gave him the Dadasaheb Phalke Award before he passed away; better late than never!

Mausam Mausam Lovely Mausam from the classic Bollywood film, THODISI BEWAFAII (1980) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thodisi_Bewafaii), directed by Esmayeel Shroff. The music is by Khayyam. On the occasion of Indian Independence Day tomorrow, I am posting some patriotic film songs.

Mere Desh Ki Dharti - UPKAR (1967)
Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri praised Manoj Kumar's earlier film Shaheed and enthused him to make a film on the Jai Jawaan Jai Kissan slogan. The slogan shaped into Manoj Kumar's official debut as a director for Upkar, where he believably played both a jawan and a kisan. A huge hit, Upkar made Manoj an authority on screen patriotism.

Music : Kalyanji Anandji; Singer : Mahender Kapoor; Lyrics : Gulshan Bawra;
Featuring : Manoj Kumar, Asha Parekh, Pran, Prem Chopra.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiYscnj_L7A

Hai Preet Jahan Ki Reet Sada - PURAB AUR PASCHIM (1970)
Purab Aur Paschim is a 1970 Indian film. The movie was produced and directed by Manoj Kumar, and was his fourth film on Patriotism. The film received generally positive reviews. Deepa Gahlot of Bollywood Hungama wrote "By linking the story to the freedom struggle, Manoj Kumar was saying that freeing India from British rule is not enough if Indians do not feel proud of their Indianness."

Music : Kalyanji Anandji; Singer : Mahender Kapoor; Lyrics : Indeewar Featuring : Manoj Kumar, Saira Bhabu, Madan Puri.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVJ1O3TEOjs

Kar Chale Hum Fida, Jaano Tan Saathiyon - HAQEEQAT (1964)
The movie was based on the 1962 Sino-Indian War. It won the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film in 1965. This song has become synonymous with patriotism in India. (It means: We have sacrificed our lives and bodies for the Nation, now the Nation is in your hands, take care of it.)

Music : Madan Mohan; Singer : Mohammed Rafi; Lyrics : Kaifi Azmi; Featuring : Balraj Sahni, Dharmendra, Priya Rajvansh, Sanjay Khan, Vijay Anand.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6yTCblgAQQ

Vande Mataram - ANAND MATH (1952)
This is a 1952 Hindi patriotic-historical film directed by Hemen Gupta, based on Anandamath, the famous Bengali novel written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1882. The novel and film are set in the events of the Sanyasi Rebellion, which took place in the late 18th century in eastern India, especially Bengal. This song played an important role throughout the Indian Independence Movement and was eventually declared the "National Song" (much more powerful than national anthem) at the time of Independence in 1947. Kumar's tune for Vande Mataram is still considered an important version of this popular and widely interpreted song.

Music : Hemant Kumar; Singer : Lata Mangeshkar; Lyrics : Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyaya.
Featuring : Bharat Bhushan, Pradeep Kumar, Geeta Bali.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj1Iy4nRMkc

Vande Mataram - A.R.RAHMAN (1997)
Vande Mataram is a 1997 studio album by Indian musician A. R. Rahman. It is the largest selling Indian non-film album to date. The album was released on the Golden Jubilee anniversary of India's independence. A critical and commercial hit, the title song from the album is one of India's most popular songs of all time.

The album was met with overwhelming responses. Rahman became the first Indian artist of popular music to go international when Vande Mataram was released simultaneously in 28 countries across the world. Rahman himself performed live at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi on the eve of the Golden Jubilee of Indian Independence to a packed audience that comprised the then Prime Minister of India, Inder Kumar Gujral.

Music : A.R.Rahman; Singer : A.R.Rahman; Lyrics : Mehboob; Producers : A. R. Rahman, Kanika Myer Bharat, Bharatbala.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a3/Shaan.jpg/220px-Shaan.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaan_%28film%29)

Shaan was directed by Ramesh Sippy after the super success of his previous venture, Sholay. The story was written by Salim-Javed. The film was expected to match the success of Sholay but failed to do so. The film however, ran to packed houses in its re-runs and made a lot of money. Ramesh Sippy did obtain the services of Sholay's music composer, R.D. Burman, whose songs for the film provided it with a Best Music nomination at Filmfare. The songs became super hit in the year 1980. The usage of synth and electric guitar is just superb in this movie. (Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi.)

A magnificent composition by R D Burman that is strangely obscure in spite of his enduring popularity to this day. Maybe it's because it's sung by Rafi than the usual favourites of the RD camp.

^ Lovely bhajan by M.S. From the comments section at Youtube : Gandhiji loved this Bhajan very much. On Gandhiji's 78th birthday in 1947, which turned to be the last birthday of his life, M.S.Amma sang this Bhajan in front of him. He appreciated her very much. When Gandhiji was assassinated 3 months later, this Bhajan came there with the report. When M.S.Amma heard this, she suddenly collapsed.

Today is Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar's birthday, and I'm posting some of my favorite songs by her, though it's quite difficult to select just a few songs from the thousands of hits she has rendered. BTW I'm posting the songs in separate posts as it would be easier to index them.

Today is the birthday of the Original Dream Girl of Bollywood, Hema Malini (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hema_Malini). She is an actress, director and producer, Bharatanatyam dancer-choreographer and, a politician. Making her acting debut in Sapno Ka Saudagar (1968), she went on to appear in numerous Bollywood films, most notably those with actor and future-husband Dharmendra and with Rajesh Khanna. Hema Malini was initially promoted as "Dream Girl", and in 1977 starred in a film of the same name. Today is the birthday of Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan, and I'm posting songs from his successful hindi debut film, EK DUJE KE LIYE (1981).

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/aa/Ek_Duuje_Ke_Liyehindi.jpg

It was a remake of director K.Balachander's own Telugu movie Maro Charitra (1979), which had Kamal Haasan playing the lead role. The only person who was missing in the Hindi remake but had acted in the original Telugu hit, was leading lady Sarita, as her role was now played by Rati Agnihotri. Director K. Balachander, Kamal Haasan, Madhavi, and S.P. Balasubrahmanyam all repeated their artistry in the Hindi hit. EK DUJE KE LIYE was labelled a blockbuster at the box office earning a total of INR 100 million in receipts. It received critical acclaim upon release, winning a National Film Award (Best Male Playback Singer for SPB) and 13 Filmfare nominations, eventually winning three (Best Screenplay for K.Balachander, Best Lyrics for Anand Bakshi, and Best Editing for K.R.Kittoo).

The film featured music composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi.

Rajraj, Can you tell us a bit about the music director of this song

Swarup: B.S.Kalla's name was listed along with Emani Sankara Sastri as music directors in a movie, possibly a Hindi remake of a Telugu movie. I think the Hindi movie was 'Bahut Din Huwe'. I think Bala Nagamma is the original. It is an old movie porduced by S.S.Vasan (Gemini Studios). I am not sure I posted a song from Bahut Din Huwe. I will post a song later.

From the MalayaLam movie 'Swati Tirunaal'.

Jamuna Ki naare........Bansuri Bajaave...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uftAisbUcr4

The movie is in MalayaaLam.
The composer was Maharaja Swati TirunaaL of Travancore state (a malayaaLi).
The composition is in Hindi. He composed a few songs in Hindi and Telugu even though most were in Sanskrit.
The singer BalamuraLi Krishna, a well known carnatic vocalist, is from Andhra, a Telugu.
But he resides in Chennai.

These facts were mentioned by one vocalist when he sang this song.

If not for such film songs, we probably would have missed beautiful ragas like Tilak kamod, rt?

RR,
Tilak Kamod is Nalina Kanti in carnatic music. For some reason this raaga began to appear in Tamil movies in recent (for me) times. One song is 'endhan nenjil neengaadha thendral needhaanaa'. :) The most popular caarnatic composition is 'Manavyaalakincharaadhathe' by Thyagaraja. There are very few compositions in this raga.

Thank you Raj! :) Great selection indeed. For any serious music lover, the movie SWATHI THIRUNAL is a must see/listen to production.
The movie has a great collection of Swathi Thirunal compositions, the only exception being "Mokshamu galadaa puvilo...."
by Thyagaraja Swami. The singers include Balamurali Krishna, KJY, SPB, Neyyatinkara Vasudevan, Chithra, Aundhathi and Ambilikkuttan.
Music/orchestration for the movie was by the late M.B. Srinivasan.

This is probably not the right thread for this list; but music is beyond language, culture, etc! Here it is:

Pannakendra sayanaa.... (Balamurali Krishna, KJY & Neyyatinkara Vasudevan)
Alar sara parithaapam....(KJY & Arundhathi)
Mokshamu galadaa puvilo....(Balamurali Krishna)
Parama purusha Jagadeeswara....(KJY & Neyyatinkara Vasudevan)
Sumasaayaka viduraa....(Arundhathi)
Paarvathee naayakaa paahimaam....(KJY & Chithra)
Saarasa mukha sarasi janaabhaa....(KJY)
Geethaku mithu thaga dheem (thillaanaa)....(Ambilikkuttan)
Maamavaa sadaa jananee....(Neyyatinkara)
Devanukei pathi indraa....(SPB)
Krupayaa paalaya souree....(KJY)
Jamunaa kinaarei pyaarei....(Balamurali Krishna)
Kosalendra maadhavaamithaa....(Neyyatinkara)
Chaliyei kunjanu mo thum....(Chithra)

Most, if not all the songs are available on Youtube.

Raagadevan, Thanks for reminding . I like the parama purusha rendition a lot..

Raj, that's what the 'textbooks' say but I can't see how nalinakanthi and tilak kamod are similar. To me, each have key signatures that put them worlds apart. I am all ears if you can explain..

BTW, jamuna kinare is a wonderful song. BMK takes it to a different level. Sung in Pilu I guess..

You are welcome RD! :)

RR: There was a discussion in the old hub about Nalinakanthi/Tilak Kamod where the claimed the equivalence ! :) That was more than 10 years back around the time I came to know about this hub. If you can find that thread and post your comment we can see how they respond. May be it is another case of 'manasuloni' and 'samaja vara gamana'being classified under Hindholam even though they sound different (due to a change in one note) . I think they have renamed the scale for 'manasuloni' as Varamu, yet to be accepted by all! :)

In fact, one of my friends who knows ragas in both systems told me about the equivalence/similarity about 30 years back. If I meet him I will ask him about the ragas! :)

Guess the raga for the song I just posted here! :)

Rajraj, The Lata Mangeshkar song above from Bhabhi Ki Chudiyaan (1961) sounds a bit like a A.M Rajaa song from Missiamma 1953. The Telugu version starts with 'telusukonave yovathi'. The most popular of Nanda's movies must be Gumnaam (1965). At least that's where I recall seeing her first on screen (in Mannargudi, raj :) ). I don't think I knew much hindi then but the movie was really engrossing. Nanda seemed to fit the character well and helped give a handful of scares to the audience. I saw the movie again couple of times on tv during later days, and interestingly had the same observation. I couldn't help compare the tamil version here. Can't say much about the heroine there. I think Ravichandran also overacted and copied Manoj kumar's body language a lot. Anyway I have to admit both movies are classic thrillers..!

The Hindu published an article about the Tamil movie RathakaNNeer(1961) that borrows a tune from Poonam(1952).

The tune is from

Jhoome Jhoome Dil Mera Chanda ki Chandni men........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgAPmR_quXg

The Tamil song from RathakaNNeer:

aaLai aaLai paarkkiraar....

I was in a wedding reception for a friend's son. My friend sang this song from Bhakta Surdas(1942):

Panchi Bawara Chand Se Preet Lagaye..... in Kedar.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkNbO2hR2vQ

Kedar is equivalent or close to Hamir Kalyani in Carnatic Music. I was made aware of this in one of our annual music parties.
I opened the evening with the Thiruppavai "thoomaNi maadathu" in Hamir Kalyani. After I finished one of my north Indian friends, author of a book on Indian classical music, came up to me and said that he was happy that I sarted with Kedar. :)
