thankyou raj...thankyou "SOOO" much.... any shivaranjani is DIVINE for me.... SIMPLY LOVED IT esp lata versin....so much emotions poured into it. Song keeps ringing in me again and again. thanyou so much raj...

shivaranjani actually is a raaga depicting nostalgia... "hum to na bhole tum bhool gaye" even lyrics reflect the raaga. thankyou so much :) :)

and its lovely seeing "young tabassum" . Earliest memory of tabassum was in dd, I remember watching her as aunty hosting kids shows :)

welcome to this thread rajesh. and double welcome for "shivaranjani" raaga... !

I am speechless...so much shivranjani...is choking me with unexplainable feelings and emotions......! Raaga is so much suited for hauntings and past recollections! Why I love this raaga and why this has such a deep impact in me is ... very very mysterious.

madhu, does mehbooba have a happy climax? ..and oh Rajesh-khanna and his smile :) ...... ever green aint not! thankyou.

Every single song in this raaga is very close to my heart. However first 2 hindi songs that comes to my mind is "Tere mere beech mein kaisa hai yeh bandhan" and "Jane kahan gaye woh din" and ofcourse lot lot other songs follows. With great difficulty, I contain myself from repetitive over enthusiastic talks here :) I personally feel, justice done to this raaga in hindi films is still lacking in southern films .

( My eternal search for a song which has "sau sau janmon ka bandhan" or some similar words I suspect would be in this raaga ...hmm... )

Power

There is a song from Milap by Mukesh. "kai sadhiyOn se kayi janmon se" which is very close to my heart. I think thats also based on sivaranjani.
whenever I hear this song my mind goes away from my body and I feel something which cant be expressed. May be u may like to tease me for telling like this.
But thats the truth.

I heard this song long back in my school days and got this feeling on the very first time itself. ( Remember... I didnt know any word in Hind. But I can sing this song )
Watched the video (courtesy; youtube ) recently.

Thanks SP. Thanks raj sir, madhu for wonderful songs from shikari, chitchor, salaam terry kasam, mughal-e-azam.

I am posting after a long time. Back to all time favorite Madan Mohan ji. This time with a magical combo Talat ji. When people say Madan-Lata is the best ever combo, I tend to think Madan-Talat combo a little higher.

Teri chamakti inkhorn ke age yeh sitare kuch bhi nazi. Lyrics by gem of a poet Indeewar, one of this best. Lata ji's starting aalaap makes us feel light like the breeze as if we floating in the air. Talat ji voice makes us still lighter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwcZA8RNbss

Do din ki mohabbat mien hum ne. Please hear the complexity and the variation in the tune. Talat goes to higher and lower pitches comfortably and switches back and again goes up, just like a kite dancing in the air, which way the air pulls it, it accommodates itself. Beautifully sung by Talat ji.

Herez a cheerful version of very meaningful song

zindagi pyaar ka geeth hai, isse har dhil ko gaana padega
zindagi gum ka saagar bhi hai, hanske uspaar jaana padega
..
hai agar dhoor manzil tho kya, raasta bhi hain mushkil tho kya
raat taaron bhari na mile to dil ka deepak jalana padega.
...
zindagi ek peheli bhi hai sukh dukh ki saheli bhi hai

easier to read as poetry... :)

I agree. By 60s already Rafi is the top singer of all of them, still didn't feel good that his name appeared last, like an additional singer.

Looks like there was a tough competition between Madan Mohan ji and Roshan ji in who was best using Talat ji in 50s. The winner is always we listeners. Roshan ji magic again. Two beautiful compostions from the film Raagrang (1952). One a solo by Talat and another a duet with Lata. Compositions like this will never be made.

Aur Hai Dil Ki Lagi. The vibrant piano and wind instrument starts in a brisky fashion leading to a swinging violins followed by breezy sarangi. Talat ji starts the song with his bright voice, yet you can hear the pain in his voice. One of my all time favorite, not just Talat's and Roshan's. The composition takes a wavy structure and passes through us gently and takes us completely. The violins, sarangi and sitar interludes adds more honey towards the composition. Excellent lyrics by Kaif Irfani. I am completely floored by this composition, will take with me for ever. Roshan ji and Talati ji.:notworthy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsp043DvBB8

Dil-E-Beqraar Soja. A sober lullaby by Talat and Lata, just when you need a good night sleep after a busy big day. We become a kid hearing this beauty. We get some unknown happiness which words fail to describe. We can go into perfect dreams beyond this planet.

I am puzzled. There are two songs from 1949 one ion Hindi film Patanga
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3v5lcWFIgwQ
and the second from Tamil film Vazhkai (from 11:35 in the following video)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oY8BhsDOvU
Both sound similar to me. It seems that Sudarshanam copied a few Hindi tunes and Ramachandra's ealier tune influenced one of the tunes in Vazhkai but the above two films are from the same year.

Ten days and no songs!

Looks like the energetic younger generation does not want to spend much energy here! :) I will take a short break from my long break!

In one of our music parties I sang a composition in Bageshri from Narayana Theertha's Krishna Leela Tharangini - Govindhamiha gopikaanandha kandham....
One of my north Indian friends, a linguist and musicologist, identified the raga as Bageshri. Later we discussed about some ragas. He said " jaag dard e ishq jaag" from Anarkali was the best example of Bageshri.

Here is that song from Anarkali(1953)

Today I'm posting songs from the hit film "Geet Gaata Chal" (1975). The film stars Sachin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachin_%28actor%29), Sarika (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarika) (ex-wife of Kamal Haasan), Madan Puri, Padma Khanna and Leela Mishra. The songs written and composed by Ravindra Jain played a large part in its unexpected success. Rajshri Productions as well as Barjatyas are known for movies which revolve around social and family situations. Geet Gaata Chal was a big success for its lead actors as well as the music director Ravindra Jain.

I saw the film in the erstwhile Safire cinema complex in Mount Road, Chennai, in the cinema hall Blue Diamond, where (it was rumoured) you're allowed to watch the film any number of times, using the same ticket on the same day! The emotional impact for me is, it was raining heavily that night; so I'm frequently reminded of these songs during the monsoon season !!

I wonder which Ragas these wonderful songs are based on!

Kaveri Kannan : "Aapko dekh kar" is a nice ghazal well sung by Jagjit Singh!

"Hum ko kiske gham ne mara" is a nice one by Ustad Ghulam Ali. 'Na gham ka gham nikalta hai, na hamara dham nikalta hai' -> very
touching lyrics!

And your translation of "Hum tere shahar mein aaye hain" is very apt!

"Now if you observe carefully you notice a very strange phenomenon. In all these songs the male version caught the popular fancy. The female versions lagged so far behind that many of them became extinct from public memory and it would be difficult to believe that they existed." There are both versions of many songs like 'Ae mere dil kahin aur chal'. Is this correct?

Madhu Ji,
Thanks. There are interesting discussions in 'Songs of Yore' about copied-adapted songs traveling from one language to another. Since I participate in different language websites (without really knowing the languages) I pass on information from one site to another. Cumulatively it seems to be ok, at least it satisfies some curiosity and I get to know some nice tunes.

We said 'May His/Her Soul Rest in Peace' five times for artists. For a change here is a tune from the west. 'Never On Sunday' from the movie Never On Sunday by Connie Francis was a very popular song in the early 60s. It also won an Oscar. Here is how it was used in 'Ustadon ke Ustad':

Maine kahan tha aanaa Sunday ko....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=286n0dtqCQQ

The original English version from Never On Sunday(1960):

Never On Sunday...........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF8OYdL1tG8

The video shows Doris Day. But the singer is Connie Francis.

The original Greek version by Melina Mercouri:

Ta Paidia Tou Piraia ( transliteration of Greek may be different if you are searching youtube.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28EAWlOXrYs

The movie was made in English,Greek and Russian (or dubbed from the Greek version, not sure.)

Connie Francis was a popular singer in the 60s. Two of her other popular songs: 'Lipstick On Your Collar' and 'Where The Boys are'.

Rice crop cycle begins in June in Tamilnadu. The Tamil and Telugu songs are about being a farmer. I used to visit my ancestral village during summers of my school/college days. In one of those visits I was asked to initiate the ploughing season. The handle of the plough was about as tall as I was. I held it with both hands. Another person held it firmly to make sure I did not let it go when the plough hit a bump in the field. I went one round in the field and others took over! That was a long time back. Now, the ploughs are gone. You see tractors and other equipment. Bullock carts are gone. Now it is automobiles and motor cycles. Progress has a price. The simple rustic life is gone. The songs (Tamil/Telugu) are about simple rustic life.
Yaeru in Tamil means plough ! :)

My attractions in the village were tender coconuts, tender palms, mango and tamarind fruit !
And also the percussion used in the songs known as 'thappu' in Tamil. The farm workers used to play the instrument and dance on special occasions. I think that practice is gone too! :(

Nice to read about your reminiscence, Raj. It's been ages since I visited my ancestral village - no chance of that happening now as my relatives have themselves shifted to Chennai.

This is a rare song. First of all, this is the only song that K.J. Yesudas sang in a
Rajesh Khanna movie (even though the song was not for Rajesh Khanna!).
This song is from one of only three movies in which Yesudas sang songs composed
by R.D. Burman. In the video of the movie that I watched, only a few seconds
of the aalaap (humming) in the middle of the song were included. I do not know whether
or not the theater copy of the movie had a longer version. Most, if not all, of the LP records,
CDs, and on-line collections of the songs from the movie had this song excluded, but the movie's
titles credited Yesudas as one of the singers.

Without further ado, here it is:

Song: "raam rahim mein anthar naahi..."
Movie: ALAG ALAG (1985)
Directed by: Shakti Samanta
Starring: Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Tina Munim
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi
Music: R.D. Burman
Singers: K.J. Yesudas and Asha Bhosle

Hundred years of Indian Cinema is being celebrated. I am familiar with some movies from the 30s. I thought I should post some songs from the 30s. I was surprised to see Ashok Kumar singing. Of course those days there was no playback singing.
Once in a while I will post songs from the early years of Indian cinema. :)

"Koi Humdum Na Raha" from Jhumroo is one of my favorite songs of Kishore Kumar, picturised on Madhubala and himself. Some people leave behind their foot prints never to be forgotten, and one of them is Kishore Kumar. The song rendered by Ashok Kumar is the original from which Kishoreda took the inspiration and also took brother Ashok's permission to use it for Jumhroo. The original music director was Saraswati Devi and the lyrics were written by Jamna Swarup Kashyap.

Raj : The song is quite popular as can be seen by the number of views (617,955) for the following version.

Nice performance by Sonu Nigam, featuring some of my favorite Kishore Kumar songs like, Zindagi Ek Safar, Jai Jai Shiv Shankar, Mere Sapnon Ki Rani, and many others. Sonu manages to almost touch Kishore Kumar's style of yodelling which the latter had perfected to an art.
