Aah dubbed into Tamil as Avan is my most favourite movie. I liked the songs so much I used to wait outside the 'Touring Talkies' in the town where we lived and listen to the songs. Here is one by Mukesh:

Raat andheri door savera.........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Len9ZbotAU&feature=related

I am sure you are wondering about 'Touring Talkies'. Touring talkies is a large tent with the projector at one end the screen at the other end, as in regular thetres. It was enclosed by a fence made of coconut leaves. It was not soundproof. You could listen to the songs, but not see what was on the screen. That was fine for people who wanted to listen to the songs and dialogue. The area between the screen and the projector was divided into floor, bench and chair. Floor ticket was three and a half annas, bench five annas and chair ten annas. I was more interested in the songs and not the dialogue (nothing like Manohara and Parasakthi ! :) ) If I went to watch I would go for bench. If I went with friends it was floor, a thick layer of river sand. Of course standing outside the talkies for three hours takes some diversion. We used to get a glass of tea and a bun to earn the right to sit on the bench in the tea stall.

How things have changed in the last fifty or more years? Now you have music at your finger tips. I still have the 78 rpm records (called plates those days),33 rpm records, 45 rpm records, magnetic tape reels, audio cassettes, 8 track cartridges,CDs and DVDs, I collected from 1965. Someday I will store everything in a hard drive. When I catalog them I am likely to find some rare albums. I will share them with you!

Music at your finger tips? You never had it so easy! That was what I used tell my student in my introductory lecture on Digital Communications and othe related topics. That is right!

.................................You never had it so easy!............................................. ...................

Have fun. I will post more from Aah.

I could not find the Tamil version - kaarirul neram kaalaiyo dhooram kaNNeer baaram nenjile.

Do Diwane is a very good and popular song those days. I think it is by Jaidev ji? Thanks vinatha.

rajraj sir, Very nice to read your touring talkies experience. Thanks for sharing. Also good to know that you still have your records. Please share any rare songs whenever you come across.
In my early days, the coconut leaves fence turned into concrete walls with still the roof was still made in bamboo sticks and palm/coconut tree leaves. Even there are many touring talkies I have seen the roof has changed to asbestos sheets (it will be so hot during summer). Normally we go to night shows so all we can feel cool breeze pass by while watching the films. Great place to watch the films. :D

That train with a steam engine always brings back memories of my train travel in India. I have gone around India a couple of times by train when I was a student- Madras to Calcutta, Calcutta to Kalka, Kalka to Simla by mountain railway, Delhi to Bombay and Bombay to Madras. It is an experience I would not want to miss if I could do it again. I was commuting to collge. Those days it was know as South Indian Railways(SIR), later changed to Southern Railways(SR). They had third class, intermediate class, second class and first class. I used to travel by third class during regular months with a three month season ticket costing eleven rupees and four annas. A couple of months before the examinations I would switch to Intermediate class paying twentytwo rupees and eight annas for three months. That was to make it easy for me to study while travelling. Whether I really studied is debatable!

Thanks vinatha and V_S. I was interested in music from my elementary school days! As they say, Tanjore soil (maN) and Kaveri water makes you musically inclined. Not sure how valid it is! :) But, we did live close to some great musicians! :)

That was a great one sir! Three months season ticket for 11 rupees wow! Train journey is always memorable, but yes steam train travel is more memorable with those unique sirens and sounds. Great song to carry your great college memories. Great to know about your music inclination and we have seen some of your musical shares and that speaks about your great taste in music! Please keep them coming!

Adana and Darbari Kanada are close and it is not unusual to mistake one for the other in some renditions.

Here is one from Jhanak jhanak paayal bhaaje:

Jhanak jhanak paayal bhaaje......

Here is a bhajan by Pandit Jasraj:

maataa kaalikaa.........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-S39dMQ5sI&feature=related

About forty years back I was invited to attend a private concert by Pandit Jasraj and he sang this song. There is nothing like attending a private concert with 15 to 20 in the audience. It gives you the freedom to ask questions and learn more. He was very pleasant and kind.

V_S: Thanks. Tanjore soil and Kaveri water or not, I made sure the musical inclination continued in the family. All
my children(three sons) were exposed to music and encouraged to learn. All are violinists (Western Classical).
The youngest even formed his own string quartet when he was in high school. He also played viola in his college symphony. A couple of years back I learnt that music and mathematics are well related in child development. A child exposed to or interested in music does well in mathematics and vice versa. Not sure whether that has anything to do with the younger two becoming mathematicians! :) I am happy with that! :)

I wish the carnatic musicians took pains to put at least some carnatic compositions in western notation. Only Professor Sambamoorthi did some work in that area, translating some carnatic composition into western notation.

Have a good weekend! :)

I was listening to 'vatapi ganapatim bhajeham' in Hamsadhwani this morning. Hamsadhwani is one of the few carnatic ragas adopted by Hindustani musicians. There was a time when carnatic concerts began with 'vatapi ganapatim bhajeham' by Dikshithar. I am not sure that is true any more.

Here is a Hindi movie song from Parivar(1956) in Hamsadhwani:

Ja tose nahi bolun kanhaiya.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jWb_pdmRqI

Here is a carnatic classical rendition by M.L.Vasanthakumari:

vatapi ganapatim bhajeham.....

Ajoy Chakraborti's rendition of 'vatapi ganapatim bhajeham'. It is rare for Hindustani musicians to sing Sanskrit compostions. I like this one.

In school prayer we used to sing a song in Hamsadhwani- aruL purivaai karuNai kadale

Tamil month 'thai' is here and the wedding season has begun. Here are two songs from Mother India (1957), a popular movie of the fifties.

Pi ke ghar aaj pyari........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFjdjpvy_Og&feature=related

You see a caravan of bullock carts in the clip. That reminds me of the first wedding I attended in my ancestral village. There was the wedding ceremony in the morning with nadhaswaram. After dinner there was a flute concert. Before the ceremony they were playing 78 rpm records with a loud speaker. I am still puzzled about how they did it when there was no electricity in the village. The gramaphone did not require electricity. You had to wind the spring to store energy and rotate the record (called plate those days). It must have been batteries. There were petromax lights in the night. The flute concert was my first concert.

The next morning there were about ten bullock carts. I thought the guests were returning home. But, it was for wedding party to take the bride and groom to the groom's place about 20 miles away. One of my uncles had a jeep. The groom was driven away in the jeep. The bride and some family members including some kids like me took the bullock carts. We used to get off from one cart and get into another cart, just for fun.
It was a fun ride. Of course there was not much traffic in the road. Bullock carts are gone replaced by vans and buses. No fun! :)

Here is a song that tells you about the fun of riding bullock carts:

Oh gadiwale gadi dheere........

Concluding Hindustani concerts with Bhairavi was the tradition. Not sure it is true anymore. We hold a musical evening at the end of the year where friends sing in Tamil,Sanskrit,Telugu,Kannada and Hindi, and also play sitar and veena. The evening usually ends with Bhairavi sung by our north Indian friends. Here are those songs in Bhairavi:

Madhukar shyam hamare chor.... by K.L.Saigal in Bhakta Surdas(1942):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4fyfd3E5zo

Tu Ganga ki mauj.........from Baiju Bawra(1952):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj3t5jOTYmw

We started the musical evening to let the Indian children learning music (violin, viola, flute and piano) play what they learnt during the year. It was fun to watch the children move up from 1/8 size violin to full size violin.

Here is a piece our children played in their annual concert, played by a group of children:

Is there a better movie to celebrate on valentine's day than Basu Bhattacharya's ANUBHAV!

Urban , gorgeous couple lost romance & intimacy , sucked into their busy life

Wife realized it , wanted to do something about it & she did .

Beautiful Tanuja with dazzling Sanjeev kumar in ethereal black & white picture ..... What a masterpiece !

romance oozes in Kanu roy -Geeta Dutt team's composition.

meri jaan, mujhe jaan na kaho meri jaan ....

oh ...darling ! don 't call me your life , because life is not permanent ....says Gulzar .

Well, in this non permanent life, the lady took her marriage seriously, did everything in her powers to turn around the situation, rejuvenated the physical intimacy and affectionate gestures that made love such an awesome experience.

Charukesi is another raga that migrated to the north from the south. Here is a song from Dastak(1970):

Probably the most famous Tamil movie song:

Manmadhan leelaiyai vendraar uNdo by MKT in Haridas:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lt3MRCvAtao

There is a story behing my singing 'manmadhan leelaiyai'. I was a small boy and was fascinated by this song and used to sing a few lines. Our neighbour who also sang this song asked me whether I knew the meaning. I said no.
Then he said that I should be singing a different song and taught me 'deena karunakarane nataraja' by MKT. I am reminded of this whenever I watch the music competitions for children where they sing songs that are not fit for their age! :( Change? :)

I opened one of our annuual musical evenings with 'thoomaNi maadathu' ( 9th verse of Thiruppaavai) in Hamir Kalyani, because it was the month of Margazhi. When I finished one of my north Indian friends,an expert in classical music, came to me and said that he was happy I started with Kedar. Kedar is the Hindustani equivalent of Hamir Kalyani with a slight difference.

Here is a song from Mughal E Azam(1960) in Kedar:

Beqas pe karam kijiye........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaeiwBG_DbE

There are not that many compositions in Hamir kalyani in carnatic music. In addition to the thiruppaavai verse I like 'Purahara nandana' and 'ParimaLa ranganatham' by Dikshithar. Here is Purahara nandana...

Beautiful song raj sir and good to hear your childhood memories through this song.

The song V_S posted appears to be in Yaman or a variation. I picked yaman for the weekend. Yaman is Kalyani in carnatic system.

Here is a song from Chhaya(1961):

There are many more movie songs in yaman/kalyani. I will post a few later. Here is a Tamil song in Kalyani:

In some other thread I read about Jazz being used in Tamil movies. Rag preceded Jazz. Scott Joplin is considered to be the pioneer of ragtime compositions .

My youngest son plays Scott Joplin on the piano whenever he comes home. The piano in the Hindi song reminded me of that. Here is 'Maple Leaf Rag' by Joplin:

The Hindu article says that Star Talkies in Triplicane is set to be demolished. The article also says that Madhumati ran for 50 weeks and Yaadon ki Baarat ran for 100 weeks in that theatre.

http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-tamilnadu/article2965317.ece

I think I posted a song from Madhumati. Here is a song from Yaadon Ki Baaraat(1973)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j81sne4fzpQ&feature=related

I understand that the movie was remade in Hindi,Tamil and Telugu. Here are the songs from the remakes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-2v-o4murI&feature=related

I chose this song (old version) because of the dress worn by the kids. It brought back memories of Deepavali as a kid. You notice that the kids are wearing similar shirts and trousers. That was what we had. My father used to get yards of cloth a couple of weeks before Deepavali. The next day a tailor would show up at our home to take measurements for all of us brothers. A few days later the tailor would deliver the shirts and half trousers and collect his charges. On Deepavali day we would appear in similar clothing! :) A yard cost between one and a half rupees to two rupees depending on whether it was Binny Mill or a mill from Bombay state.

Same thing happened with haircuts. On a Sunday a barber would show up and give haircuts for all of us starting with my father!

It is sad to see landmarks disappear. In Bangalore I used to frequent Opera Theatre for English movies. Now it is a shopping centre! :(

I can't forget Bol re pappi, as my niece won first prize singing this song. Ultimate and one of the best by Vani Jayaram. Thanks sir for raaga info, but surprise to hear the raaga name, 'Miyan ki Malhar'. Ippadi oru raagamA?
Nice to read your dress memories with appropriate Yaadon Ki Baarat song. I too had similar experience during many festival seasons, wearing similar dresses. Hilarious to hear the haircut sessions. Yes, I too remember this. But we had much bigger line as we lived together. It will start with my grandfather, his three sons (including my father), my brother and cousin. Thanks, you brought back all good memories through your posts and songs.

Regarding Yaadon Ki Baarat song, I feel happy that Thamizh version did not copy the hindi version, like the telugu version did. MSV changed it significantly and localized it perfectly.

for yaadon ki baarat, raat kali ek kwaab

//On Deepavali day we would appear in similar clothing! A yard cost between one and a half rupees to two rupees depending on whether it was Binny Mill or a mill from Bombay state.

Same thing happened with haircuts. On a Sunday a barber would show up and give haircuts for all of us starting with my father!

It is sad to see landmarks disappear. In Bangalore I used to frequent Opera Theatre for English movies. Now it is a shopping centre! //

You are welcome SP. Yes, original is always the best. RDB is a magician, added with Kishore ji voice, nothing like that. Listening to 'Oh Majhi re'. Best song in any angle, be the lyrics (by Gulzar), voice, tune, pain, visuals; fanastic! The pain in Kishore ji voice gets a lump in my throat. Wonderful Composition!

You said something about Miyan ki Malhar, another raga I like. Miyan refers to Tansen who was a court musician in Akbar's court. I think Miyan means scholar or Sangeetha kalanidhi in our parlance ! :) Some Hindustani ragas are attributed to him as the creator.

There is a lot about why O.P.Nayyar did not use Lata. I don't think we want to discuss that here! :)

My small contribution again from Rafi saab with inimitable combination of Madan Mohan ji (my all time favorite and top most hindi composer). Teri Aankhon Mein Siva Duniya Mein from Chirag (1969). Wonderful lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Anytime listen, great voice and what a graceful singing! I fall flat to Madan ji feet for this tremendous composition. The beauty is when Rafi sings 'Mera jeena mera marna inhi palkonke thaley', a big kiss to Rafi saab. Followed by Lata ji in her memerizing voice, feels like a mother singing this as a lullaby. Here is a song in Bilawal from "pran jaaye par vachan na jaaye"(1974):

chain se humko kabhi..........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVO7x_MRGpI

Sankarabharanam is the carnatic equivalent of Bilawal. Raga Sankarabharanam always reminds me of 'Saroja dhaLa netri' ,a composition of Shyama Sastri, rendered by M.S.Subbulakshmi. Thyagaraja composed two songs in Sankarabharanam, "gatha mohaa" and " vara leela gaana" that are significant. I could not find a presentable version of 'gatha moha'. My sons played it on violin for their violin teacher and String Orchestra Director at our place after dinner. I sang the song. He complimented us as a musical family. That is a little bit of stretching!

Here is 'vara leela gaana' by Unni krishnan:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNFJcMullHc

I am sure you feel the difference! :) It feels like listening to a western classical piece! Because, C major in western classical is equivalent to Sankarabharanam. Gatha moha will sound the same.

I am sure he will suggest a good one! :)

Missed this thread for atleast a week. Great songs shared by raj sir, Designer, Saai, tfmlover, raagadevan, Sunil and SP. That was lovely guitar in shivranjani. Thank you all.

I was hearing Dastak songs just before entering this thread, and raj sir has already posted this song. You read my mind. I love Madan Mohan's rendition. That's the soul we are taking about from the true souce from where the song was originated. :notworthy: What a combination, Lata-Madan!

You also added another surprise this week, with Anil Biswas composition. What a singer Manna Dey is and Lata-Manna Dey is always a very special and rare combination. Thanks raj sir!

BTW I was collecting and listening to some C. Ramchandra's (Chitalkar) gems this week from Albela, Anarkali, Baarish, Nadiya Ke Paar, Navrang, Pehli Jhalak, Samadhi, Sangeeta, Shehnai, Zindagi Aur Maut and many more.

Wanted to post everything, but one from that everlasting list from Baarish by Lataji and Chitalkar himself. They are all big mountains and hearing these compositions seems like today's generation songs are not even molehills.

Thank you Shakthi, Sunil, tfmlover, Saai, V_S and Raj for the great songs. I am a big fan of "old" Hindi songs too, but what I considered old until recently were not nearly as old as the great songs that are being posted on these pages these days! Raj and V_S and others have opened up a new door for me to appreciate and enjoy the real classics from previous years. Thank you; and please keep them coming!

For a change of pace, here is a folksy "old" one!

"yammaa yee yamma vuu yammaa vu yammaa..."; a song from Rajshri's SUN SAJNA (1982); sung by K.J. Yesudas and Usha Mangeshkar; with music by Raam Laxman. Yesudas also sang happy and sad versions of the duet "sun sajna mEra mann..." with Anuradha Podwal in the same movie.

I vaguely remember watching the video of this song a long time ago on a VHS player. Could not find a video online.

This is real fusion, in a linguistic sense; "mEri bhaasha thamiL hei, thEri bOli malayaaLam, mil hi gayaa par thErE hrudhayam sE mEraa idhaiyam..."; a Tamil guy and Malayali girl singing to each other in Hindi! :)

This is possibly my first post on this thread...

Last couple of days I'm under the 'AjA sanam' spell !

What a song!

Interestingly, it also stirred up memories of one of my school teachers (a colleague of my parents) whose mother tongue was Urdu. He was our scout master and an excellent singer...

He used to sing this number during scout camps! I felt very nostalgic when watching 'chOri chOri' this Friday!

I don't know how to describe the beauty of the composition. Whether it is because Roshan has put all his soul in it, or whether Rafi sang this song with the best of soul and pain in it, or whether Sahir Ludhianvi has brought out the best in lyrics (every line is a gem), or the sitar which plays along carries us to immortality or whether it is because it is composed in Yaman raga, I don't know. Very very less songs fall into the category with respect to the soul it has got. A eternal classic by Roshan ji from the film Chitralekha (1964). God's own singer - Rafi saab!

Watching Rafi singing this song with enormous ease, is itself a biggest gift.

Another timeless classic Dil Jo Na Keha Saka by Roshan ji from Bheegi Raat (1965). Every song (Aise To Na Dekho Ke, Jaane Woh Kaun Hai Kya, Mohabbat Se Dekha) in this film is a true classic! Roshan ji has taken this composition to greater heights, by composing in higher octaves to bring out the sadness and depth in Rafi's singing (as per the situation). A perfect example of a pathos song which need not be dull. A very bright pathos song, but the power in the singing and the lyrics will make us feel the pain and hit you hard, that's where Roshan ji and Rafi saab stands tall. Compare this song and the previous one and see how Rafi saab brings out the difference in shade for almost similar situation.

raj sir,
Again you read my mind. Last week it was Roshan's week for me and you aptly picked two exquisite numbers of Chitalkar and Roshan ji from Stree and Aarti. Aarti is one of Roshan ji's best and my all time favorite. Every song in that film proves the genius in Roshan ji. Great to hear the ragam info for baar baar tohe kya. Every time I hear Aarti songs, I never failed shedding tears. Every composition is truly a masterpiece created only for singing Gods Raji and Lata. Aapne Yaad Dilaya To Mujhe Yaad Aaya. :notworthy: Thanks for reminding!

Sunil,
Thanks a lot for mera pyar wohi hai from Yeh Raat Phir Nahi Aayegi. I found the video of the song. Ravishing Sharmila Tagore with handsome Biswajeet.

For kuhu kuhu bole koyaliya I only heard the Thamizh version, but the original is in Telugu sung by legends Ghantasala and Jikki while thamizh version was sung by Ghantasala and P Susheela, composed by Adi Narayana Rao (husband of Anjali Devi, she is the one acting for this song). One of the greatest composition, (not just in films) by Adi Narayana Rao. I think the hindi version is dubbed version of Telugu. In Thamizh the lead actor is different; Gemini Ganesan. Any budding singer in reality show does not fail to sing this song. Here is the thamizh version.

My sister loves Rafi-Asha duets more than Rafi-lata duets. No big reason, may be the contrast between their voices is striking or the songs they both got are more special, since the music director has opted for Asha ji rather than top favorite Lata ji (excluding the unavailability factor) tells us something. Asha ji is underrated having lived in Lata ji's shadow, one of the greatest singers of all time. You can see her power in O P Nayyar's compositions, but here once again from Madan ji. Defining a pathos song! Nice to remember hearing this slow song amidst the rush and fast Mumbai squeezing train travel back to home after a tired day at work. What a contrast and neutralizing factor!

I've tried my best, Sir! My Hindi and Urdu is slightly weak :(

tumhaaraa chaahanewaalaa khudaa kee duniyaan mein
mere siwaa bhee koee aaur ho khudaa naa kare

God forbid, that other than I there is no one else who loves you in god’s world.

ye baat kaise ganwaaraa karegaa dil meraa
tumhaaraa jikr kisee aaur kee jabaan pe ho
tumhaare husn kee taareef aaeenaa bhee kare
to main tumhaaree kasam hai, ke tod doo usako
tumhaare pyaar, tumhaaree adaa kaa diwaanaa
mere siwaa bhee koee aaur ho khudaa naa kare

How shall my suffering heart stress this,
The mention of your existence from someone,
Even the mirror applauds your beauty,
I shall promise that I’ll break that mirror,
I’m mad about your love and your charisma,
God forbid, that other than I there is no one else who loves you in god’s world.

wo din naa aaye ke muz se kabhee judaa hokar
kiseekaa pyaar dobaaraa kahee talaash karo
zukaake sar ko kisee ajanabee ke shaanon par
tum apane gam kaa sahaaraa kahee talaash karo
kareeb dil ke tumhaare kisee bhee haalat me

I hope that day never comes when we separate,
I can’t bear the thought of finding new love after losing you,
Bowing down to a stranger’s charm,
In difficult times whatever the situation please find support from someone close to you.

tumhaare dil ko kabhee muz se koee thhes lage
muze yakeen hai, ayesaa kabhee naheen hogaa
muze wafaaon pe apanee badaa bharosaa hai
tumhaaraa pyaar hee de jaaye naa kahee dhokhaa
duaa ye hain ke tumhaaraa, khudaa kee duniyaan me
mere siwaa bhee koee aaur ho, khudaa n kare
tumhaaraa chaahanewaalaa khudaa kee duniyaan me
mere siwaa bhee koee aaur ho khudaa naa kare

I assure you that I will never hurt your feelings,
I have confidence that I’ll stick to my promises,
God forbid, that your love for me isn’t a game or that you're playing with my emotions,
God forbid, that other than I there is no one else who loves you in god’s world.

Wonderful! Thank you Sunil. Really appreciate it. There are few lines and words (shaanon, ganwaara,..) which I don't know the meaning (especially the lines; tumhaaraa pyaar hee de jaaye naa kahee dhokhaa - why does he say that?), and without that, I could not get the whole poetry and its complete meaning. Now I can enjoy the lovely composition. What a lovely poetry!

Excellent pick. Thanks for reminding Rattan again. I believe Naushad, Khemchand Prakash, Anil Biswas, C Ramchandra all ruled the 40s. What a talented group of singers! My most favorite song from this film is O Janewale Balamwa by Amirbhai Karnataki and Shyam Kumar which I posted some back here (http://www.mayyam.com/talk/showthread.php?4695-Hindi-songs-of-Emotional-Impact-nostalgic-favorites-etc&p=833378&viewfull=1#post833378). 'ab tere siva' and 'chup chup kade ho'. Those tunes were used in Tamil movies. For me some songs remind me of the place where we lived when heard those songs first (I had lived in 11 places by the time I earned my B.E ! )

Rajesh,
I remember those songs well. I too went to four schools ( my father was a school teacher) and three universities including Madras U. That is why I still remember some Tamil songs. Here is a recent post covering some of those songs
http://atulsongaday.me/2012/05/15/gori-tere-natkhat-nainaa/#comments
The first female voices I remember from Hindi films were sort of metallic( described differently in the post) then with Lata! Geeta Roy and others became softer and then shrill. This may not be an exact descriptions but there were some changes , may be because many left for Pakistan. For some reasons I did not like the most famous of them Nur Jehan except for a few particularly the dhammal 'ho lal mere' www.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D6hF2OZlcdxs

Here is a song, probably known to most from Samsaram (Telugu, Tamil 1950 sung by Ghantasala, A.M. Raja respectively) with music by Susarla Dakshinamurthy. A similar song in Hindi film Sansar, 1952 has different credits but the same tune. I am partial to the Talat version but Telugu friends do not agree. The Tamil version can be found in

raj sir :notworthy: You made my weekend with Poochho na kaise. Brilliant, brilliant composition by SDB ji. I heard that this song was first given to Rafi, since he got too emotional SDB had to rope in Manna Dey. After hearing Manna Dey saab, I have to agree that Rafi saab didn't sing it. Manna Dey thoroughly deserves the honors. What emotions, control, depth in singing! :notworthy:

BTW, engernthu sir pidichinga, Ustab Mahesh Mulwani and his tablaist. That was a great find! Thank you sir. I have never seen fingers rolling so fast for so long time. Hats off to that gentleman. :notworthy: Just because of that, I loved Mahesh's version better than Anup Jalota. I never knew the relationship between Ahir Bhairavi with Chakravaagam, till you told me. Now I can relate them clearly, especially the flute portions tells us the chakravaagam in it.

SP, Thanks for Jism and introducing MM Kreem. Beautiful soundtrack and a very pleasant one. Perfect for night time.

raj sir,
Thank you for Naghma song; kaahe jade kiya. Both versions were good. Sorry, I don't understand why you said 'lyricist did not like Amirbai's version'. Those days, lyricist chose the singers too? Please enlighten us. Also thanks for Chitragupt classic from Opera House. I have not heard much of Chitragupt, except Alibaba aur chalis chor, mien ladki and few more. He has a different style. This classical song definitely is different from other of his period.

Apart from that, I wanted to convey and understand the 'sandham' part in hindi songs. Many times I see (even the old hindi songs to today), based on the tune and sandham they try to fit in the lyrics, even if it does not fit exactly. Like for example this song, there a line 'jadugar balma'. But she sings 'jadu' as a separate word and 'gar' as a separate word. Similarly 'baalma' is a word. But they break it into 'baalu' and 'ma'. There are many such examples. Another one that comes to my mind is 'Aap ki nazron ne samjha'. But when they sing, they sing like 'aapu ki nazuron ne samjha'. They add a 'u' extra whenever the sandham does not fit into the tune. It does not sound glaring when we just dissolve in the tune, but when we closely hear the lyrics, sometimes I get distracted by these and looks awkward. But when we speak like that colloquially adding 'u', it clearly sounds that we are not from North and alien to that language. But it is fine when you sing that way. There are lot more like this. I have not seen much like this in our lyrics, except in recent times. Just wanted to convey this since I was having this doubt for a long time.

Sunil,
Terrific selection from SDB; Jeye To Jaye Kahan. My favorite. I used to also listen to Lata's version of it. Thank you. All songs in Taxi driver is masterpiece.

V_S: Adding vowels at the end of a word or between adjacent consonants is permitted in Hindustani classical and Hindi movie songs to fit the tune/ragam and thaalam. Long time back I discussed this with a linguist. He said that it was bacause they had difficulty with double consonants. They have a name for it, I forgot. That is why swarna (Sanskrit) became swaran. He gave me some other examples. Splitting words is also permitted. In fact, something similar happens in carnatic music. There is a Harikambhoji composition - dinamani vamsa tilaka......lavanya. They will sing it as 'dinamani vamsa...........tilaka lavanya'. In spoken language it is unacceptable. In singing it is fine. In the composition 'samaja vara gamana...' saama nigamaja sudhaa maya becomes saamani gamaja.... These are not that bad. Current crop of singers mutilate words. I won't go into that. What is worse than changing 'bhagyadha lakshmi baarammaa', a Purandara Dasa compostion to 'bhagyadha lakshmi paarammaa'! More later.
Enjoy the ghazals! I like them! :)

Priceless gems! Thanks raj sir for Ye na thi hamara qismat. I liked Suraiya and Noor jehan's version very much. Can't believe one single Mirza Ghalib's composition can be sung in different raagas like these. How flexible it should have been. :notworthy: Thanks for explaining about the consonants aspects in detail.

Back to Pankaj Mullick and K L Saigal. From the film My Sister (1944). Some peerless and timeless ghazals in this film. The youtube audio quality is not quite good, but mp3 versions online are quite good.
First one, Aye Qatib E-Taqdeer Mujhe. It seems this ghazals was hugely popular and celebrated. One of K L Saigal's best. Hear how the melody was constructed by one and only Pankaj Mullick. Brilliant! The melancholy is transported from KLS to us instantly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLNDMWhQUD0

(little clear version: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Hn4jQ9WqaJM)

Next one, Do Naina Matware from the same film. The beginning sitar tugs our heart strings. While the former is about pain, this one is very light to our hearts. Hear how baritone K L Saigal goes and within seconds goes high. Just the beginning tune for the first line is enough to rewind, it is that sweet. There is also Pankaj Mullick's (singing) version in youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_URwqxX5lE

Listening to these compositions is itself a big gift. These compositions does not only belong to earth, but also to heaven, which is very rare of todays' songs.

I chose a song from 1954 because it is a special year for me. 1953-54 was a memorable academic year for me. That was my final year in high school. I sat for the statewide school final known as Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination with a letter from a doctor certifying that it would not affect my health adversely because I was underage (avasara kudukkai  ). In that examination I came first in the school, first in five of the seven subjects including Tamil for which I won a gold medal, one sovereign worth (called savaran or pavun for pound in Tamilnadu). If I remember correctly a British sovereign sold for Rs75 those days. I hear it is about Rs20000 now. I still have that gold medal. It will be a heirloom.

Avvaiyar, a Tamil movie with K.B.Sundarambal in the lead, was released that year (1953). That was the only movie my father accompanied me to the theater. He left at the interval asking his clerk accompanying us to take me home after the movie. I also attended my first carnatic vocal concert by K.B.Sundarambal. I still remember the main piece- Rama nannu brovara. She repeated the line 'neppulakai kanna thaavu ...' several times. Next day I sang that line to the amusement of my classmates! :) Avan, dubbed version of AAH was released that year. That is my most favourite Hindi movie ( for the songs). Another memorable event was watching the drama 'KaLvanin kaadhali' by T.K.Shanmugam brothers. It was made into a movie later with Sivaji Ganesan in the lead.

I acted in a Hindi skit ( Don't laugh ! :) )

Above all my first story was published by KalkaNdu, edited by Tamilvanan. I sent (posted) the story and told my friends about it. They started laughing uncontrollably. I did not know why? Then one of them explained that people who wrote for KalkaNdu were twice or thrice my age and there was no chance of my story being accepted. But, to my surprise, the story appeared in KalkaNdu a few issues later. It was time to rejoice with the three rupees reward promised by Tamilvanan. I waited for two weeks for the money order for three rupees.
It never came. Then I wrote to Tamilvanan, with no response! :( Next time I visit India I will stop by KalkaNdu office and demand that three rupees with interest for nearly sixt years!

Will somebody do the calculation and let me know how much I should ask for? :)

( I am sure all of you have memorable years. Time to record it for your children and grandchildren! :) )

Have a good weekend! :)

Rajraj,
What a coincidence. I too passed S.S.L.C. at the same time, underage and first in the class. I too used to sing songs from Premalekhalu (Telugu version of Aah). But the rest of the story is tragic. One of my older cousins told me that I should sing in private and killed my singing career. I got gold medals later but they turned out to be plated. Anyway, here us a song which I heard much later. about 1970, and which I have been listening to recently. Apparently, it was a private song ( with her husband Kamal Dasgupta composing the music) and was used in a film in the fifties. I cannot find it but there is a morphed version:

Thanks Swarup sir for sharing the valuable blog. I will listen to Kamal Das Gupta's compostion and also need to have it in my collection. These are the things which will be memorable when looking back after few years.

Thanks raj sir for SDB classic from Kaagaz ke Phool. Whenever I listen to this song, somehow I mistake Geeta Dutt's voice as Lata's. Her voice is so close to Lata in this song. Also only few times in that era, we can clearly hear the bass lines. This song is one of them. Also thanks for explaining the chandabangam. Chandathirkku bangam vanthuvidum. That's the point I am also deriving it. I get it, somehow these vowels congeals well with the hindi words, so it does look so awkward, but was just wondering, if they could have composed without using that liberty. Atleast in our thamizh film songs (in classical we have, because that's is more of singing skills rather than lyrical skills), I didn't find this much, may be it will look awkward, as the language is very strict?. It's good anyway not to take that liberty.

Regarding Ai Ishq Hame Barbad Na Kar, is it Darbari (Kaanada)? It takes me to Chinnanchiriya vaNNapparavai eNNaththai solluthamma. Great Composition by Husnlal-Bagatram.

Rajraj,
I do not know much about ragas. I started recognizing a couple of ragas but then decided that I just liked the songs, some of the MDs seem innovative use ragas in different contexts from which they were meant and sometimes even mix up ragas.
There is an interesting article about 'Lapak Jhapak' which links to a discussion about it in the Hub
http://www.svabhinava.org/abhinava/Sunthar-LapakJhapak/LapakJhapak-frame.php
It also says "We have here an apparently bizarre situation where everyone is ravished by Lapak Jhapak and attributes its musical appeal to the sublime power of the underlying rāga, and yet there is little agreement and much confusion as to its identity!

Online listings of film music tend to classify this song as Darbarī Kanada or Miyan kī Malhār, though instances of its being labeled as Megh Malhār, Adānā, etc., or even “Jai Malhār” (invented solely for the occasion :-) ..."

Thanks swarup sir for highlighting this forgotten singer; Kanan Devi. After your post on Kamal Dasgupta and Kanan Devi, I am completely bowled by her singing and the innocence she brings to her voice. I was listening to Aye chaand chup na jana continuously last night. Brilliant ever! Even Lata ji has paid tribute to her by singing this song, but not even close to that innocence. Not to forget that 'Toofan Mail'. It seems it was so popular those days. Every song in Jawab (1942) is something we don't get to hear at all nowadays. I think they would have said the same thing in 60s too. As I think there is a huge difference in hindi films songs from 40s to 60s. I tend to favor 40s and early 50s mainly because of these forgotten/rare singers like K L Saigal, Suraiya, Kanan Devi, Amirbhai Karnataki, K C Dey, Kursheed, Zohrabhai, Noor Jehan, Uma Devi, Shyam, Timir Baran, Pankaj Mullick, Firoza, Surendra, Shamshad Beghum (and so on...) and for the composing syles being so rooted.

I collected Jawab songs and tried to remove some noise to atleast be audible. Please let me know if the songs are from the film. I also heard some wonderful voices in PC Barua, Anima Sengupta and the composer himself.

V-S,
Thanks. I will check it out. Actually I know very little about music, neither ragas nor film music. People like Rajraj seem to know much. I got interested in mathematics around 1957 and did not pay much attention to any thing else. But some of the songs I heard in forties and fifties mostly Telugu, some Tamil (I went to college in Madras),and some Hindi songs which I picked from my mother, friendsand Radio Ceylon stayed with me and now with YouTube, it is possible to listen to many more. Strangely, I find myself drawn to the same singers you mentioned. There are some articles on the evolution of Hindi film music in Upperstall, I posted the links in my blog
http://gaddeswarup.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/hindi-film-songs-of-yesteryears.html
Sometimes I go to old threads in the Hub which has a lot of information about old film music in various languages. Recently I found about Periyanayaki from one of these old threads.

I was searching for a particular song and I came across this song by Madhubala Jhaveri. Her voice reminded me of M.S.Rajeswari in Tamil movies.

From Dost(1954) -Music: Hunsraj Bhel

Dekho chanda se khelen sitaren..............

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyY-_wtG1Bc

Swarup: The song 'lapak japak' seems to be humorous song or a song in a comic scene. If it is so I would not be concerned about change in the ragas. Darbari Kanada and Adana are close ragas from the same parent scale.
Moving from one to the other is easy. Megh Malhar is from a different parent scale. It takes changing notes completely. I suspect the music director did it intentionally. Megh Malhar is sung to bring rain. Watching the movie will give some clues! :) I have not watched the movie. Some of the songs I posted follow the ragas faithfully.

V_S: I had lunch with my linguist friend today. He said some of the words used in Hindi songs are not used in conversations or writing - piya, sajan, saajan, sajni, sanam, baalam etc. Looks like they have a separate dictionary for songs in movies! In Hindustani music importance is given to raga exposition. In Carnatic music both raga and composition have equal importance because carnatic compositions are devotional. Nobody would think of singing the Tamil equivalent of 'kya karoon sajani aaye na baalam' in a Carnatic concert ! There are a few romantic compositions in carnatic classical !

Mehdi Hasan. May his soul rest in peace.

Mehdi Hasan was considered to be one of the best exponents of Darbari Kanada in ghazals.

Here is a clip from Meri Pasand (My favourite) in Pakistan TV:

ku ba ku (also spelled 'kou ba kou' ):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7mYWijfriA

Longer clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAA3n55wSd4

A short clip (about 6 minutes) with lyrics and a list of his ghazals:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJzkI2A8Gho

In the second clip he talks about Darbari Kanada and Jaunpuri, and sings in those ragas to show the difference and how you can move from one to the other. Darbari Kanada, Jaunpuri and Adana have the same parent scale. If you listen to these clips a few times you will never forget Darbari Kanada! :)

Have a good weekend!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja3XCe4e2gc

A comment quoted made fun of the music director accusing him of drifting to other raagas in the song. I thought it was in poor taste. I searched, found the song and listened to it a few times.
The song is about water/rain and clouds heralding monsoon. The viewers identified darbari kanada, adana (from the same parent scale),megh malhar and mian ki malhar(from a different parent scale). Megh malhar and Mian ki malhar are called monsoon ragas that bring rain. The lyrics has words/phrases like 'aa re badharwaa', 'pani la', 'panghat' and 'barso' indicating water! After listening to the song I was convinced the comment was in poor taste. Obviously the person who made such a comment has no sense of humour, knowledge of ragamaligai used in carnatic music! :( I suppose that is freedom of expression in the internet age !

This is probably the best comedy song in "classical style" !

Have a good weekend! :)

Rajraj,
Thanks for posting the song 'Lapak Jhapak'. Even though it is an old song I found it only about five years ago listening to one of the cassettes I picked up in India. I was stunned and then called a friend to listen to it. He too was fascinated and it actually rained. Since then I have listened to it several times. I hesitated posting it since I was not sure whether it was posted before. Here is another MannaDey song (duet) which came out first in Telugu/ Tamil with Ghantasala. Both songs are in the link, I preferthe Telugu version nd again I am not sure whether it was posted earlier.

rajraj sir,
Thanks for introducing Lapak Jhapak. What a classy composition by Shankar-Jaikishan ji! Only Manna Dey saab can sing such classic. :notworthy: Luckily I have listened to the other song you posted by Roshan ji for Malhar. I am not a big fan of Mukesh's voice, but no complaints in his singing, especially the sad songs, he is the one to beat on emotions. This one but for a happy song, he did extremely well.

Swarup sir,
Beautiful songs. Thank you. As you said telugu version definitely stands out mainly because it was originally tuned for telugu nativity. The sweetness of the language and Legends Ghantasala and Balasaraswathi taking it further.
