Haunting song of Talatji, composed by legend S D Burman for film Devdas (1955).
One of the best pathos song. The song uses just one instrument. Just for the feel which Talatji brings in, show cases how to render a song with almost no backing instrument, yet sound so beautiful, pitch perfect and haunting. One genius of composer, SDB.

And again kudos to director Bimal roy for excellent picturization.
The song starts with Paro (Suchitra sen) reading a letter. The camera pans up the clouds and trees with lightning (that was beautifully shot). The weather is just about to rain. Devdas sitting on the shore of the calm lake. What a serene atmosphere!!. Dilip Kumar's acting may not match with Talatji's singing, but atleast it seems natural to me.
I also like that big tree branch on which Dilip is leaning. The song ends again like how it started, with Paro. I don't know how to put it, but one word, Masterpiece!! Whenever I listen to this song, I could not control my tears.

I would even say this is the best Devdas film of all the films made on Devdas.

mitwaa laagi re ye kaisi
anbujh aag
mitwaa mitwaa mitwaa nahin aaye
laagi re ye kaisi

vyaakul jiyaraa, vyaakul nainaa (2)
ik ik chup mein sau sau bainaa
rah gaye aansoo lut gaye raag
mitwaa mitwaa mitwaa mitwaa

Kekati Gulab Juhi - Basant Bahar (1956) - Shankar Jaikishan

One of the greatest classical song in indian cinema. Added to it, it is a jugalbandi (competition) between two stalwarts. Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Manna Dey saab. I always relate this song to our 'Thiruvilayadal' song "Oru Naal Pothuma" and "Paattum Naane" (eventhough the tamizh song is not a direct competition song face to face). As per my interaction with elders, they somehow like Dr. Balamurali Krishna's rendition compared to TMS. Similarly, in this song, no one can accept the fact that Pt. Bhimsen Joshi losing to Manna Dey (sings for Bharat Bhushan). It's not about losing or winning, they sing as per directors discretion.

This song is very difficult to sing, and the singers express their vocal abilities with stunning brigas. Manna Dey saab the most underrated singer. We can clearly see his range, up against a giant Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. Especially the end.

Pt. Bhimsen Joshi singing is just amazing!! no words.

Another Big surprise is, while listening to this song for the first time, I guessed the composer might be Naushad Ali saab as he has done similar song in Baiju Bawra (1952) named "Aaj Gaawat Man Mero" sung by Ustad Amir Khan and Pt. D V Paluskar. But to my surprise, the composer is Shankar Jaikishen, who is not popularly known for such type of compositions. Great Composition!!

One of the best Hindi movie ever made IMHO!! One of my most favorite and emotional film!!
A great thing about this movie is, the story is none other by the Great "R K Narayan".

Dev Anand pairing with Waheeda Rehman.
Legends Rafi, Lata & Kishore bringing soul & life to S D Burman's composition.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KR67xAVj5U&feature=channel - Title song, sung by none other than the composer himself, S D Burman, very rare song!! Soul stirring folk song, Unconventional voice!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b543r0E8ciI&feature=related - The only Kishore kumar song in this film, Great duet song. What a beautiful pair Dev Anand & Waheeda!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1odcNKyfZJU&feature=fvst - Best example of the feeling of first time love. What a sweet song and honey soaked rendition by Lata. Hats off to S D Burman!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8AvJnfnjQQ&feature=related - Excellent song by Lata and excellent dancing by Waheeda!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_gzVisz0XI&feature=fvst - Another example of melody, how it should be
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27ASuBNWBQQ&NR=1 - One of the best song ever in Hindi cinema!! Can anybody sing like Rafi, the most gifted singer!! What a song!! Excellent picturization and acting by Dev Anand & Waheeda!! Kudos to director Vijay Anand.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUhf6IDVrjA&NR=1 - Excellent pathos song again by Rafi saab, eyes are wet after listening/watching this song!! Very meaningful song. One phrase says "You are so much nearer to my heart, Yet how far you are! ... Lyrics by the great Shailendra, hats off!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6zkhN2YGQo&feature=channel - Again excellent pathos song by Rafi saab!! What to say about this song, no words!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w33XCJQJj0&feature=channel - Spiritual Bhajan towards the end of the film and the climax!! What a perfect finish to this perfect film!!

Enjoy the classic!!

One of the, if not the, best ever Hindi Albums/Soundtracks.

What a bunch of songs

Thanks Sunil for reminding me this classic song from SDB saab. The guitar prelude and the orchestration in this song that too in the year 1952, shows how SDB is way ahead of his time. Again Excellent singing by Hemant da.
Dev Anand looks cute and Geeta Bali's acting makes me smile :)

Anarkali - A Masterpice by C Ramchandra.

One of the revered composer in Indian cinema. Anarkali is one of his masterpiece. And it's Lata all the way, no other female singer. It shows how much faith the composer had in Lata. Some of my favorite songs in this film.

Mohabbat Aisi Dhadkan Hai - Lata Mangeshkar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAF80U5CKFE (soulful composition)
Yeh Zindagi Usi Ki Hai - Lata Mangeshkar (Salute to composer, what a melody and what a singing!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na2VxqcsvQo
Jag Dard E Ishq Jag - Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar (one of the best duets of all time)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzXrJ3DzMsE (I think VR has taken this tune for Mayakkum Maalai for Kulebaghavali)
Zindagi Pyar Ki Do Char Gadi - Hemant Kumar (excellent singing by Hemant da)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCViCUyk9-g&feature=related
Mujhse Mat Pooch - Lata Mangeshkar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcyVtqA77Bc
Aaja Ab to Aaja - Lata Mangeshkar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8l3wfmVtrc

Many thanks to All India Radio and Doordharshan for introducing me such classics to me. Especially the 'Rangoli' program on Doordharshan on Sundays (I think at 7.30 am). I still remember those days, when my sister use to wake me up, to not miss this program. Thanks to her.
I got introduced to so many hindi songs only through Doordharshan and AIR. I will be hearing to AIR mostly during nights with my father.
Gone are those golden days. :( Nowadays we rarely hear such type of melodies in new films. :(

Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto tradition (Raag Bhairavi)
A memorable song usually sung at the wedding when their daughter/sister leaves home after marriage.

The first version sung by the first and the greatest filmi singer of all time K L Saigal saab. Saigal saab did not have any formal classical eduction, but still his singing and voice emotes to the maximum depth possible!
K L Saigal (from film Street Singer 1938)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm4wPgDqLyc&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_BmHDD8rSM&feature=related

This version is more interesting as Joshi saab takes classical route, rather filmi route, and brings the essence of bhairavi raag.
Pt. Bhimsen Joshi

One of the best comment from this link:
Bhimshen ji, you are the Einstein of Music! Mankind owes you a royalty just because you existed.

This is a ghazal version of the same song sung by ghazal kind Jagjit Singh ji and Chitra Singh ji for the film again.
Jagjit Singh & Chitra Singh (1973 for film Aaviskar MD: Kanu roy)

This version is live, Jagjitji showcasing his talent, with able support from Tabla. What a combination and singing!

In this version, Nerukar Ji is paying tribute to Saigal saab. Surprise package, as she is confidently delivering Saigal's song with great ease! Hats off!

Thanks Sunil! Good to know Saigal was your granddad's fav. singer. Even my father's too. Through him only I came to know all these legends, what a rich talent and what a period those were!. Yes, I usually get lost mostly in those old time music.
Coming to the song, yes original is always original, my favorite also is Saigal saab for the emotion he brought in the song. But everyone had their own style in their singing, stamping their class!

Manna Dey & Lata - Aaja Sanam Madhur Chandni - Chori Chori [1956] - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEt3_K9nu2s. What a classic :notworthy:
Wow! Shankar Jaikishen ji!! Very refreshing song and what an album that is! The orchestration is fantastic, is that accordian? (I heard only Shankar Jaikishen used more instruments compared to other music directors of that time). Manna Dey and Lata at their best!
We used to listen to these songs (with friends and neighbours) during night after dinner outside our home gate sitting or lying on a cot (that kayathu kattil!) or easy chair gazing the sky and stars, with that gentle breeze!

Thanks a lot Sunil!

Thanks to Hariharanji for reminding me this song. Listening after a long time. This song is one of his favorite song and one of the participant sang this lovely song in the 'My Favorite' (Hari's favorite) round in Hariyudan Naan show in Jaya TV.
What a composition by Madan Mohan ji. Zara Se Aahat Hoti Hai ('http://www.raaga.com/play/?id=105218') Lata's voice sweet as honey!!

Etthanai murai Kettalum salippathillai!

Don't want to spoil the mood of the song by posting the video of the song, so posting the audio link of it.

Dekh Kabira Roya (1957) by genius Madan Mohan.

Another mellifluous composition from Madan Mohan ji, this time with Manna Dey saab. "Kaun Aaya Mere Manke Dware"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_vcV7JGKpY
From the same film, "Meri Veena Tum Bin Roye" by Lata and Asha.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHL9FxHJPlU
And the last one by none other than Talat Mahmood. "Humse Aaya Na Gaya Tumse Bulaya Na Gaya"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiCJCPgjRC0

All songs has steady flow like a stream, no jerks, no bumps. Minimalistic instruments, but all concentration in tune and singing. The composition looks simple, but tune is itself very complex, unlike today's compositions, no variations, very flat tunes. They only concentrate on arrangements, comfortably leaving out the soul of the song, which is the tune.

Mausam (1975) - Madan Mohan melodies of the highest order

A beautiful love song, with lush green at the background. Excellently sung by Lata and Bhupinder Singh.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBhEPZGw2mQ&feature=related

Now listen to the next version. Just close your eyes and dissolve in this song. What a depth in Bhupinder's voice. Best medicine for relaxation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh91UUQtFL0

Two totally different tunes for totally different situation, but the lyrics are same. That's why a genius like Madan Mohan is required. This also shows why always Maestro Ilaiyaraaja always mention about Madan Mohanji.

Music by great Ravi. Amazing lyrics!!
This song always brings joy and happiness within us and around us. Great love song, but the way Manna Dey saab has sung certainly brings warmth/Enthusiasm (I don't know an apt word for குதூகலம்). Till today I was only listening to this song, until I found this video.

What a performance from both Balraj Shahni and Achla Sachdev. That smile and shyness in Achla Sachdev's face is par excellence. At one instance, she just feels her husband's love and takes a deep breath. :notworthy: It's very natural and could not imagine she is acting. Just for her acting I watched this song so many times. I love it.

I know this thread is not the right place to post, but not sure where to post, as these are not Hindi songs and not film songs either. These immortal songs were written by Rabindranath Tagore in bengali. Sharing some of the songs here. Gives us a divine feeling and it's a great pleasure and privilege to listen to the songs written by immortal Tagore. Hemanta Mukherjee (Hemant Kumar) has given his heart and soul in rendering the songs. No words to explain the beauty and divinity in these songs.

I know these songs are fairly recent compared to the rest of the songs on this thread but they are still slightly forgotten gems with heaps of emotional impact.

Aao Nee Kudiyon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm1MuTQOr0A and Nakhredaar Banno from the Movie Sehar. (Sorry no clip for the latter, however you can hear it @ http://www.musicindiaonline.com/album/7-Hindi.../415-Sehar__2005_/#/album/7-Hindi.../415-Sehar__2005_/)

p.s. Don't forget to hear Sapnon ka shehar ho from the 2nd link above. Highly recommended.

Both are some of the finest wedding songs I've heard in my life. The former is composed by Shantanu Moitra whereas the second song is by Daniel B. George (Rarely composes, mostly does BGMs i.e Johnny Gaddaar and Chandni Chowk to China to name a few)

Here are some of my fav Shantanu tracks that I consider as classics:

...and lastly the most touching song of 3 idiots.

Great songs Sunil! I haven't listened to them, except the last one, as I watched this film.
I loved all of them, especially 'Sapnon ka shehar ho', 'Chanda Re', as the tune and orchestration deviates from standard templates. Chanda Re is one heck of a song. Kept me in trance.
BTW I have a big disconnect in hindi (and other language) songs for the past 10-15 years (except the ones by IR, ARR, or others which become popular.), need to catch up. I have more interest and enthu to find and listen to old classic songs and devote most of the time there. So much treasures we got, you know.

Thanks for sharing! Keep them coming, so that I can catch up atleast a few recent ones.

@ V_S and Suvai, thanks

Glad you enjoyed my offerings, sharing is caring :) I will try and continue to bring unfamiliar North Indian songs to the light which they should be deserving of.

This brings me to my next finding. Along with ARRs Bhagat singh, numerous Bhagat singh films released in that period p.s. I recall 5. The songs that caught my attention after ARRs version was Shaheed Bhagat Singh (2002) - music by Jaidev Kumar (primarily scores for punjabi films).

I'm sharing two songs from the movie which are still in my playlist. Enjoy! (They might not have a lot of takers)

1. http://bit.ly/f0oC1p - Aao Ni Behno sung by Simran and Tripat.
2. http://bit.ly/hrQ3Nc - Chhup Chhup Ke Zamane sung by Kavita Krishnamurty.

Here is a salute to all the martyrs who died in the name of their country, RIP.

Sunil...have heard this song in Tamil...big shocker was seeing Jyothika in clip...hmmm sounds more crisper than Tamil version

There are 2 tamil versions of this song.

1 from Oonjal (Dubbed version of the original Hindi track) sung by Srilekha Parthasarathy and Unni Krishnan. The song was called Kangal Pesum.

The other 1 is from Jodi and the song is Kadhal Kaditham by Unni Menon and Janaki.

Doli saja ke rakhna was in fact Jyothika's first ever film and she debuted through Bollywood not Kollywood.

Doli saja ke rakhna is one of ARRs most underrated album, which is sad because all the songs are a delight. OTOH I don't know how well they fared with the Tamil audience.

Hmmm don't even know of the 1st version you listed, I know the 2nd version was a hit...seriously we had three "best hits of the year" cds, all three listed this song.

As I say to V_S in Raja's gem thread...that you have taken the time to share what is unknown, forgotten or underrated allows for its once sad fate to become a listener's new happy fate  whoa...major corny that.

When the orchestration and the thumping Hip hop beats fuse with the ethnic beats the song delivers one of the most memorable transformations of genre. The choral humming just emotionally backup the already acompalished impact of the song.

What a song by Laxmikant Pyarelal and Lata! Terrific opening by Anoop Jalota. Expected him to continue more. I wish I could watch lata sing this song live especially when she goes upper octaves. It will be just like she is reading a book, that's it (just like our SJ). No strain of muscles, faces.

V_S: I am glad you liked the song from TRISHUL. Sanjeev Kumar was a great actor, and one of my favorites too. Like many of the great artists, he left us too soon!

Yesudas sang three songs in that movie; "aap ki mehki huyi..." for Sanjeev Kumar, and two other songs for Amitab Bachchan. "Big B" was the angry young man those days!!! The Amitab songs were "mohabat bade kaam ki cheez hai..." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSFTbC3betg&NR=1) and "jaa ri behnaa jaa..." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aapSl4H93kw&feature=fvst); (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aapSl4H93kw&feature=fvst%29;) both with Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The third song was not in the final version of the movie that was released.

Rajnigandha Phool Tumhare - Lataji
Simple song conceived by Salil da as visualized by the legendary director Basu Chaterjee (I love most of his films). And how beautiful and elegant Vidya Sinha looks in sari with the bindi. Girl next door feeling.

Kai Baar Yuheen Dekha Hai - Mukesh Ji.
Again on the streets of Mumbai. A very simple heart-felt melody. After brief pallavi, Salil da reminds their previous relation through that wonderful trumpet. Heroine caught in dilemma whether to renew her previous relation or go with her new lover. Salil da coming with a stunner of a tune and wow! Basu ji's visuals exploiting the situation perfectly. Mukesh expresses that dilemma exactly in his singing. No wonder he got National Award for best playback singer for singing this wonderful and memorable composition.

Simti si Sharmai si from Parwana (1971). What a memorable song!

Guitar strumming prelude! When Kishore sings 'Sharmai si' even a stone heart will melt. If you already started amazing the sweetness of pallavi, charanam sounds more sweeter and with Kishore's 'vengalam' and 'gaantham' voice attracts you completely. This was one of the special tunes composed especially for Kishore.

Another beauty of the song is the underlying rhythm pattern. When charanam starts with 'Jab Tak Tumhe Dekhaa Nahi' the percussion starts only at 'Tumhe Dekhaa Nahi' and it's so casually done. Also when Kishore sings 'Sharmai si' in pallavi after Charnam, there is a stop and then the beat starts with a sort of jerk giving a wonderful listen.

One of the first Madan Mohan songs I have been introduced to in 90's. Before I knew Madan Mohan's compositions, I used to think only Shankar-Jaikishen, SDB and Naushad were greatest composers, but this is one of the songs that proved me wrong completely. After this song I completely went back to 50's and 60's of MM (but not to forget his 70's gems like Baawarchi, Mausam, Parwana et al) and still stuck there. Also Madan Mohan and Kishore Kumar combination is very rare. MM preferred mostly Talat, Rafi, Lata and Asha for his style of compositions. Even though he belong to punjab school of composers, you can see there will be no hint of punjabi influence in his compositions which is another unique aspect. Sad part is he left us very early at the age of 51. Geniuses like Madan Mohan ji are not born again.

This is what I have been taking about. Madan Mohan of 50's. If I say a word about these compositions, I will be limiting its beauty. Please take one song at a time at your leisure and just enjoy them separately. I guarantee you will never to return to 2011 and its mediocrity. People say Lataji has saved her best to sing for Madan Mohanji which is very true. I can hear from these songs straightway and these songs were sung by Lataji when she was just in her teens and 20's. Feel the emotion brought out by Lataji at her early age and that's why she is Queen of singers. Because Madan Mohan's compositions are difficult to sing, especially his 50's and 60's. Without Lataji it would be impossible to get the soul out of his hard-worked compositions. Can you hum today's songs and relish, just that you have to see some one perform and enjoy. It is always a great feeling when you are able to hum a song after your first listen or whenever the song comes to your mind. These are the kind of songs which will take you to eternity.

Very nice song Sunil! Sudden change in rhythm in between is too good. But somehow the video is not my cup of tea. Very standard visuals with absolutely no feel in their acting except for the artificial smiles. I don't know why the directors are not trying to justify the hardwork done in music with supporting visuals.

Kaun Aaya Mere - Dekh Kabira Roya (1957) - Madan Mohan - Manna Dey
One of the best of Manna Dey and what a superb composition by Madan Mohan! Legends of all time! :notworthy:
The song just starts slowly touching your feet, just like the waves touching our feet, then slowly and steadily climbs and captures parts of our body and finally captures us all over including our heart and soul. Truly divine!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoSa9UxDaFM
Best anecdote on the song on youtube by one of his fan "RealMusicKing".
One morning, Madan Mohan called Manna and asked "What are you doing? Come on over & have lunch with me". Manna arrived at his flat. Besides being a MD, Madan an excellent chef, was cooking mutton with okra. Manna said "What kind of combination is this?". Madan said "Eat it first, then comment". Manna was speechless. The dish was finger licking good. Then Madan told Manna " I have also made a beautiful tune for you. Make sure you sing it well". It was this Superhit!!!! :-)

Thanks for the uploaders and the visitors who make some wonderful comments which brings nostalgia about these timeless classic! Where is bollywood now?

What to say about this gem again by Madan Mohan, Rafi and Lata. It is impossible to get such melodies today. If Singing Gods Rafi and Lata steal our every part of body and soul by their singing, Madan mohan's composition again at his best. The sitar itself tells his monumental effort. Not a single song is wasted from him, all are pure pure gems. And what a lyrics by Rajender Krishnan. "Do ghadi woh jo paas aa baithe Hum zamane se door ja baithe". It means, Two clocks (time) are coming and sitting near us (reminding us of time is running by), but we will go far away from this world and rest.
How about the visuals, innocent Madhulabala and Bharat Bhushan and this is what love is all about. Outstanding! Everything so right about the song!

A song from Badi Bahen(1950 ? ), a very popular one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xla97GWKb4g

The tune was used in a Tamil song in vaazhkkai(1949).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVhPFC840TQ

vaaazhkkai was a great hit and this song was popular and it was common for people of all ages to hum the tune or sing the first few lines. It was released when I was in middle school (sh........ no comments/guess about my age ! )
I used to sing this song and I still do ! :) The original Hindi song was also popular, a good reason to use the tune in vaazhkkai.

Have fun going back to the 40s and singing "eNNi eNNi paarkka manam". = ( When I think about it my heart is filled with joy! :) )

? I think Badi Bahen was released before vaazhkkai.

Shamshad Beghum's first song for Naushad ji. Even at that time, Naushad ji has composed this song in middle-eastern style.
Jab Usne Gesu Bikhraye - Shahjehan (1946)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmKTDj1BGmM

Rafi's first song for Naushad ji, again from the same film. Eventhough Rafi has sung his first song for a Punjabi film "Gul Baloch" in 1944, I think this is his first hindi song. The surprise in this song is, K L Saigal is the lead singer and Rafi only comes at the end when a beggar is shown. In that way this is a unique song as both singing legends sang this song. This opportunity did not happen to others like Lata, Asha or Kishore. People also say that only Rafi got the opportunity to meet K L Saigal.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhHJeZ844Mc

These two songs are not special just for the above milestones, it is very special for the way it is composed. Only Naushad ji can bring in all the indian classical flavor blended with folk to reach every audience right from the time it was released till today after 65 long years. These songs has travelled several generations, seen many changes in the musical paths, yet didn't shy away from capturing our hearts. That's why they are called classic!

Happy DeepaavaLi ! :)

Indian cinema caught up with Rock and Roll songs in the fifties. One of the earliest movies to feature a rock and roll tune was 'Aasha' (Hindi)(1957). The movie was a hit and the producer made it in Tamil as Adhisaya PeN with a HIndi tune repeated.

Here is 'Eenaa Meenaa Deekka':

Male singing:

Both male and female singing:

Tamil(female) version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFk6I015nq8

There is a male version in Tamil too. I could not find the video or audio clip.

This song was popular during my college days and the loudspeakers used to blare this song in college functions.
Fond memories! :)
I sing a few lines from the Tamil version.

Have fun! :)

Happy DeepavaLi with a lot of sweets!

rajraj,
Naushad's premier composition - More sainyya jee Utarenge paar ho, nadiya dhire baho. My relatives who are in Pune used to tell, they listen to these timeless classics on Binaca Geetmala hosted by Radio Ceylon anchored by Hamid Sayani. They just close their ears for anything greater than 70s. They are so obsessed that they didn't want to spoil their ears. Even though they may not seem right, I don't blame them. They had listened to such high quality compositions that they can talk about them days together. Beautiful times spent with them. Remember them when I listen to these 50s-60's classics.

Sunil,
Another splendid one by S D Burman. I was staying in Sion that time and used to walk or travel by Bus/train to next station Matunga for food. Every time I used to carry this tape 'Dev Anand hits' in my walkman and never tired of listening to these gems.

Thanks for reminding these gems!

Hope you had a fun filled DeepaavaLi!

Let us have Deepavali for some more time!

You might have read about Muthswami Dikshithar composing and singing in Amrutavarshini to bring rains to Ettayapuram area. Tansen (Saigal) sings in Deepak (?) to turn the lights on.

In October 1966 I attended a concert by M.S.Subbulakshmi in Chicago. I was a student then. After the concert she mingled with the audience and was kind enough to autograph the booklet distributed at the concert. I still have the autographed booklet with the list of songs for the concert tour and also the concert in the United Nations on Oct 23,1966. She sang Hari tum haro.

Here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itUXh4UrTZc

This song is not in the movie Meera(1947) with M.S.Subbulakshmi as Meera. Here is a song from the movie:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH3YvwL_B64&feature=related

The movie was made in Hindi and Tamil with MS as Meera in both. Most of the songs are in Youtube. You might want to browse. The movie is also in Youtube.

I posted this on Oct 28the because I was listening to some of her carnatic songs and also this happens to be the day I joined the rat race (starting to work) in the US ! Time flies. Nothing like those college years! :)

A Masterpiece by Vasant Desai. Gunj Uthi Shehnai (1959). A perfect example on how songs should be composed for a movie based on love.

Jeewan Mein Piya Tere Saat Rahe - A joyous composition for lovers enjoying their heavenly moments. No two thoughts about Rafi-Lata when it comes to singing. Pranaam! We can give everything for the starting aalaap!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWeFgA9khks

After all the jubilant mood, most other songs fall into pathos, lori and grief. Again Rafi and Lata takes up another mood and melts our heart. Especially listen to these gems.

Dil Ka Khilona Haye Toot Gaya by Lata ji.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se7iJuVesJE&feature=related

And this feverish high pitch nostalgia by one and only Rafi. Kehdo Koi Na Kare Yahan Pyaar. What a pain in his voice and singing by this singing God! Hear those gliding sangathis!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSab_aD2_KA&feature=related

A shenoi beauty in Gunj Uthi Shehnai. Teri Shehnai Bole. A perfect lori by Rafi-Lata. Any disturbing and tiring mind will be put to sleep immediately by this devagaanam!

What variations shown by these legends in singing and some greatest compositions by Vasant Desai! Come back those B&W era!

Here is a song in Jaijaiwanti (Dwijawanti in carnatic music with a slight difference) from Seema(1955).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXGMxTTB_Dg

Jaiajaiwanti is one of my favourite raagaas along with Malkauns,Bageshri,Darbari Kanada and a few others!

Unfortunately there are not that many movie songs in Jaijaiwanti! :( There are a number of classical renditions in vocal and instrumental. Here is one in Sarangi, if you like:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eELdSdZMl8k

Sarangi is a vanishing instrument. It disappeared from carnatic music centuries back. It appears as though it is fading from Hindustani music also.

Please continue sir! Some scintillating songs shared from Seema, Ganga Jamuna and Janak Janak Payal Bhaje. JJPB yet another masterpiece from Vasant Desai. I dont' know who started this trend. Many songs that time fell into the same raaga category like in 'Naine so Naine'. Mayakkum maalai pozhuthe ne po po, Kalaiye en vaazhvinil and even one shankar-jaikishan song, I think sung by Talat ji, can't remember now.

Seema song was sung by lata ji in some outstanding fashion, especially the climax sangathis, what a control, yet elegant and what a life in the song!

Even though Dev Anand ji left us, these memories of him will never leave us. Missing you so much. Sharing some gems of Dev ji from Patita (1953) scored by Shankar-Jaikishan ji. Lyrics by Shailendra ji. My favorite lyricist. How charming Dev ji is. Always he is.

Patita - Yaad Kiya Dil Ne Kahan - Lata, Hemant Kumar (lilting duet with a soft hemant ji voice). The coolest actor ever. See how he casually acts with cigarette in his hand and lying back lazily with a beautiful smile on his face.

Patita - Hain Sabse Madhur Woh Geet - Talat Mahmood . This song comes to my mind whenever I think of Dev Anand ji. What a lovely lyrics by Shailendra ji. Nothing like this now. All shattered music scenario.

Patita - Andhe Jahan Ke - Talat Ji (Not picturized on Dev ji, but a superb song from the same film).

Master of tender delivery, Sanjeev Kumar is superb in Dastak.

He comes as a decent, loving man, newly wed, rents a flat unaware that the unit was a red light area house previously.

His new bride longs for a peaceful life, free of prying eyes of the neighbors, their nasty comments, just wants to enjoy her heart's wishes & marital bliss with her darling hubby.

Sanjeev Kumar restricts her, crumbles under society's pressures. she feels trapped, lonely and sad.

The composition , She sings before that awful night when he dropped her in his car, on the way raped her... very chilling scene, moving picture. Powerful with black and white shadows of Nutan's face , they didn't disgust us by showing the chasing rape, screaming and running.

Director shows class & culture with his subtle, powerful scene.

Songs from Aah were very popular and here is one that has something special. Mukesh sings and acts as horse drawan cart 'driver':

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ieuh2I7AOUI

The horse drawn cart brings back memories from my college days. We (four of us commuting students) used to hire a horse drawn for 8 annas and divide it equally, two annas each. That was to cover the distance from the railway station to the college we attended. Two annas those days bought a piece of wheat halwa for tiffin in the evening. Coffee was one and a half anna. That was considered luxury!

rajraj sir,
Very nice to read your golden memories and nostalgic moments. Please continue writing sir about your memories, so that we will know more about those days! I remember seeing annas (from my grandfather's Olai purse), but I think by 70's annas all gone. Great to hear the song with your comments.

V_S commented on my golden memories. Thanks V_S. I thought I would post a song about childhood memories:

Bachpan ke din bhula na dena from Deedar(1951)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKplk2gMqQY&feature=related

In fact, it reminds me of my childhood visits to my ancestral village(native place) during summers. There was not much to do except wading in the river that becomes a stream winding on the river bed, climbing mango and tamarind trees, and picking lemons for sharbat! But there was something I enjoyed. That was horseback riding. My uncle had a few horses and a race cart. In the evenings he allowed us to ride the horses. Not alone.
My first ride was when I was about seven years old. A servant would walk along the horse to make sure the riders did not slip and fall down. Those days are gone. No horses anymore! :( Surprisingly some of my neighbors have horses here!

I wrote a short story about my memories of 40s and 50s. Here is the link:

I was listening to some carnatic concert clips and to my surprise there was a Tamil composition in Desh, a raga of Hindustani origin. I searched for a Hindi song in Desh and here it is:

kadam chale aage by K.L.Saigal from Bhakta Surdas (1942):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLogHAD4oaI&feature=related

The Tamil song is "thunbam nergaiyil yaazh eduthu nee........" by Bharathidasan. It was M.M.Dandapani Desikar who chose Desh for the song. The appeared in the movie "Or Iravu(1951).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHLWDZQXvq0

If you like to listen to Desh by several stalwarts here is the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H_lmQMHj6E

Of these stalwarts I had attended concerts by Balamuralikrishna(vocal),S.Balachander(veena), Lalgudi Jayaraman, Ravi Shankar and Allah Rakha. Balachander's concert was during the centenary celebration of my college in 1954.
It was a memorable concert I cherish. He had his own style.

Only Dandapani Desikar used to sing that compostion. Now, many of the current carnatic vocalists sing that composition. What a change in 50 years? :)

I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year! :)

I wrote an article about Desh and the Tamil composition:

From the movie Howrah Bridge (1958):

Mera naam chin chin chu...........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVKEMOenP-o

The tune borrows from western rock music.

This song brings back memories. My son who does not know Hindi decided to play a Hindi song in a function on his violin. He listened to the song and transferred it to staff notation and played it with a friend who was also a violinist. :) He was about 10 years old at that time! You never know what children are capable of.

Thanks RR. I give the link because the listener can also read the comments by other listeners who give some interesting information and some anecdotes about the movie. Besides, it occupies space. Of course there is the option to watch in 'youtube'. :) Watching it in youtube allows you to browse other threads while listening to the song. I am glad you liked the songs. A lilt from Junglee(1961). The movie was popular with Shammi Kapoor and Saira Bhanu in the lead.

Yahoo! Chaahe koi mujhe junglee kaa............

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiAPodL6liI&feature=related

I posted this song because of something I recalled. It was September 1965. I was on my first flight (of my life) from Madras to Bombay on my way to New York and Chicago. After I took my seat a gentleman came and sat next to me and introduced himself as Shammi Kapoor and I introduced myself. That was all. I was keen on what the hostess was saying. After I got off in Bombay, a friend came to me and said that I was sitting next to a Hindi movie actor. Had I known that I would have asked him to autograph my ticket! :) Next time I met an actor in 1973 or 74 I got an autograph. He was none other than MGR who later became chief minister of Tamilnadu! :)

Shammi Kapoor is gone! May his soul rest in peace.

This song brings back memories of my high school days. I attended a concert by Madurai Mani Iyer when I was in the final year of high school. He was different from other carnatic vocalists and had an inimitable style. I liked his rendition of Thaaye Yasodha , VeLLai thaamarai poovil iruppaaL, Eppo varuvaro and others. Those days I knew only a few carnatic compositions, 'Sakala kala vaNiye' being my favourite, because we sang that in school! :)

I like Chakkani raja. That is why you see the 40 minute rendition. It is also a favorite of nadhaswaram vidwans.

I wrote an article about how 'eppo varuvaro' was changed to suit the context in a movie in 'thiraiyil ilakkiyam' series!

I was browsing youtube for a sad song of the 50s. I came across this song that depicts the state of the current economy in the US and how it affects the lower middle class and the poor. We never had so many requests for contributions to charitable causes as we had last year (2011). It is also the first time grocery stores had bags filled with groceries for custmers to buy and donate to food banks. :(

O babu O janewale babu ek paisa de.... from Vachan(1955)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXe3aiuXvQM&feature=endscreen&NR=1

The country I came to in 1965 is not there anymore. Greed has taken over!

We do our part contributing about three percent of our annual income to charitable causes. That is my way of saying thanks to the land which gave me the opportunity that did not exist in India when I finished my education in 1968 in the US. A small token! :)

Enjoyed muhje jeene do, compositions of Composer Jaidev, Sahir lyrics.

Muhje jeene do by handsome bandit stars Sunil dutt and a beautiful courtesan by Waheeda Rehman.

wonderful movie, love to revisit again. remember watching sometime during late 90s.

raat hain kuchh bheegi bheegi... by Lataji for Composer Jaidev.
Our dashing bandit laid his eyes on the beautiful Waheeda Rehman while she was entertaining in a marriage hall.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jHCOLUsW6I

Nadi naare na jao.......by Ashaji for Composer Jaidev.
After their marriage, they were running from the police with their men, Waheeda rehman was teasing and begging her handsome hubby.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXQM16SXY_Q

There is a lullaby by Waheeda rehman with heart ache, singing for her infant, couldn't enjoy his childhood, just wants him to grow up older, fearful of raising him with dangers. Our bandit realizes what kind of a danger he is putting his dear ones with his kind of life and sins, change of heart happens...

beautiful compositions.

Bandit kidnapped the courtesan.
Initially she despised him.
Later he asked her to marry him. She was elated.
