I too like "kabhi kabhi mEre dhil mein...", which is a real classic. The article gives the impression that Khayyam faded away in the 1960-s. In fact, he composed music for Yash Chopra's "trishul" (1978), starring Sanjeev Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Amitab Bachan, Waheeda Rahman, Rakhee and Hema Malini. K.J. Yesudas sang 3 songs in that movie.

Youth lack knowledge of classical music: Manna Dey

Bangalore (PTI): The young generation of singers lack basic knowledge of Hindustani classical music, laments doyen of Hindi film music Manna Dey.

"Music is not totally out. While some have awareness and knowledge in general, it is lacking among the young singers of today," Dey said.

"There is no knowledge about 'swar' (notes), 'laya' (tempo) and 'tal' (rhythm) among young voices. For this it is necessary that they are guided and trained by good masters," the veteran said.

Dey said good film music is an amalgamation of lyrics and melody, adding "Obscene songs like 'Choli ke peeche kya hai' make a mockery of music itself".

Reflecting on Bollywood music scenario, the singing sensation of yesteryears said the fifties and sixties was the golden era of music while the early seventies had melodious music. The 1998-2008 period saw a lull, but some composers are now composing good music.

When asked which young voices he find good in the wake of changing trends in music industry, Dey showed all likes for Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan.

The 89-year-old classical singer said he still practices for two hours daily. "I also believe in good health and being physically fit," he added.

IF she means her plight in irony she might have meant to say

I am not sure if you saw the movie...

In the movie, she actually runs away from her wedding without seeing the groom (Rajesh Khanna) to elope with her lover (Prem Chopra, I think), but finds out that he is a rogue and takes the train, in which she meets her friend who is a widow with a child, her friend says that she is going to meet her in-laws who she has never met before! The train meets with an accident and the friend dies.

Asha Parekh then decides to take the role of the friend, dresses up like a widow and heads to where her friend was supposed to go. This is where she meets Rajesh Khanna......

It had a typical rdburman type...peppy, on toes. (late 70z or early 80z)

and words used were janmom or yug or sadhiyon saal etc

many tried to spot the song but in vain.

Prabhu Ram, Jewel Thief is a fine movie - saw it as a 20 year old and was impressed endlessly. Ippo paarthappo konjam it didnt stand up. The surprise twist seems quite director's convenience - though he took care to ensure that the initial scenes with Ashok Kumar-Vyjyanthi are open to intrepretation, it wasnt so great a ambibuity. Adhavadhu, I feel with surprise endings, a second viewing should make you feel "che idhai epdi miss panninen - ivlo neat-a clue kuduthirkkane director" appadinnu. Adhu i couldnt feel here - even though I can see that every single dialogue in the initial scenes are ambigious and open to interpretation and are neatly tied up in the climax.

The best song, IMO, of the album would be...the great one with Rafi entering "O....Shalu". The percussion and the rhythm based prelude - wow! Evlo instruments - how beautifully used. RD Burman-ukku oru salaam!

I too saw it when I was 20. I want to savour it so I won't rewatch. I perhaps found it clever because I didn't expect it to be - enna oru prejudice. The twist also had to do with the crafty casting. These are surely one-time things.

Yeah, the casting did the trick. Yes, that I think is part of the reason why the magic is lost in second viewing. Now that you are used to the fact that you cannot go by the star/actor's image to assume anything on the motivations of the characters played by them...the thing is the surprise comes from the casting more than the actual strength of the screenplay - yeah, I suppose dont watch it after 10-15 years and get disappointed is the advice I'd give.

As for that song, it is the monumental Hoton Pe aisi baat - basically the pre-climax epic song with Dev Anand on the drums - watch out for the prelude with an excellent percussive extravaganza.

I always feel Lata Mangeshkar is overrated - in that, while she is monumentally good, india sees her as super-monumentally good generally endru oru feeling - but sometimes she makes me feel why she has that reputation. And mostly in songs that are not popular and thats when I realise the reason for my perception. A couple of songs that come to mind are
1) Kuch Dil ne Kaha from Anupama, composer Hemant Kumar. Enna oru songu - this is about a sensitive young girl, and while the calisthenics(spelling correcta theriyalai) of Asha varying pitches in Raat Akeli is rightly celebrated, you see here a nuanced version of it here in that there are sigh-ful pauses, minute changes in pitches, and a brilliant understated effect of how a sensitive girl would express her feelings to herself. The lyrics, too. And yeah, this is my first post in this thread relevant to the title :-)

2. Baiyan na dharo from Dastak - Baradwaj Rangan wrote about Sadhana Sargam singing Amma Un Pilai like a school girl boldly demanding why she was neglected by Amma, here's Lata demanding that her balam attends to her feelings and immediately at that.

Hey rd, thanks for all 3 versions and the video.
Ive initially known only one happy version, and always loved the song for its happy romantic mood, until sometime back when I knew there was a painful addition to the same song. Painful,very painful indeed is the second version.

The remix overpowers the macho voice of amitabh! What a voice! goes deep inside to chistle some undefined memories. Left me completely immersed in those beautiful scenic capturings and also a kind of lonliness.

Every 'kabhi kabhi' uttered has so much unsaid emotions and meanings. (remix version)

:exactly: I didn't want the movie's reputation putting a downer on the amazing songs..People like to assume that if the songs are wow so is the movie...the movie turned out to be too distracted, abstract and sloppy to be as inspirational as it's songs. Also there were two MDs used...Mithoon is the MD of the two above songs. Pankaj Aswathi is the other MD. I wish they had let Mithoon be the sole MD of this doomed movie.

Chitchor movie was telecasted in DD sometine in early 80z. I used to watch lot of hindi movies then and thats how I came to love hindi movies. Early 80z was like..pre teens and..I used to think ROMANCE was taboo :oops: chitchor I remember was EARLIEST movie which made me think, what a cute way to shower love and romance. It made me re think my attitude... lol.

I am sure many would know about this legendry hindi film composer Roshan (Roshan Lal Nagrath) father of Rakesh Roshan and Rajesh Roshan and grand father of Hritik Roshan. Eventhough he was prolific and active only during 50s and 60s, the songs he composed were just mindblowing!! The way he blends the indian classical music with folk music makes him the pioneer in this field. One such film is Aarti which was released in 1962 starring Ashok Kumar, Pradeep Kumar and Meena Kumari. The lyrics were by another legend Majrooh Sultanpuri.

I was listening to it while driving today, intending to skip few songs, as normally all songs in a movie won't be likeable. But the songs only made be push the rewind buttons again and again.

Here are those gems. Heart melting and free flowing tunes. There are no jerks.
