Pick #303

http://raretfm.mayyam.com/stream/pow06/sevvarali_bprg.rm

Song: sevvaraLi thottathile
Film: bhagavathypuram railwaygate
Singers : iLaiyaraja, Uma Ramanan
lyrics: Muthulingam?
Music: iLaiyaraja

This cute sweet rustic song is one of her 3 duets with IR.
'BPRG' had 3 different female singers singing for the heroine shankarabaranam Rajalakshmi.

SPS with DC - kaalai nera kaatre
UR with IR-sevvaraLi
BSS - thendral kaatrum anbu paatum

The film had a skinny lanky karthik playing the male lead. Doe eyed Rajalakshmi was not cut out to play glamorous heroine roles and this was very evident in this film. Even though she played a village belle role, the director dressed her in white nightgown (like Barathiraja heroines) in the song sequences. She looked uneasy and uncomfortable and so did the audience. I have not seen the film but have watched the songs.
I think she played heroine in only 2 other films 'kodeeswaran magaL' and 'archanai pookaL'.

Could you double check that Malligai Poovukku Kalyaanam ?

Song: undhanin paadal ennai
Film: raakaayi kovil
Singers : Uma Ramanan , Mano
lyrics: ?

Most of UR's duets were with KJY.
Few with SPB . To my knowledge she has sung only 2-3 songs with MSV, couple with Mano and Arunmozhi
I dont think she had any duets with singers like Jayachandran, SNS etc

Todays pick is picturised on kasthoori and selva. I have no other details on this film.

Song: indha azhagu deepam
Film: thiramai
Singers : Malaysia vasudevan, Uma Ramanan
lyrics: vairamuthu?
Music: shankar Ganesh

A lovely duet but im not sure why MV sings in a false voice. It gets quite irritating after a while. Those who have seen Umaramanans stage performance should have observed that she rarely smiles.
Her laughter in this song sounds very artificial :)

I have read thiramai was a good film. It had Revathi, raveendhar, sathyaraj, senthaamarai etc. Revathi comes as a drug addict? Or is it Raveendar?

Isn't there another song where MV imitates CSJ? He also sang couple of songs in Surulirajan's voice. But his imitation of TMS, for Sivaji, did not quite hit the mark.

Song: vizhigaLe vizhigaLe
Film: maamiyargaL jakkiradhai
Singer : SPB
lyrics: vairamuthu
Music: Chandrabose

The 'Jakkiradhai' warning in the title might have scared people from stepping into the cinemas to watch the film, but dont let it stop you from listening to this sweet solo by SPB.
He beautifully brings out the fine nuances of VM's lyrics depicting the expectations of an expecting father.

'MJ" is a typical, old fashioned MIL-DIL tug off war story. It had Pushapalatha has the MIL and NaLini has the DIL. Raveendar was NaLinis jodi and todays song is picturised on him.

Song: malligaiye malligaiye
Film: maapiLLai Sir
Singer : SPB
lyrics: ?
Music: Shankar Ganesh

While Yesterdays dad sang about the joys of expecting a new baby, todays dad sings on the verge of his dreams getting shattered. His wife doesnt want to continue her pregnancy and wishes to abort the baby. The lyricist(cant recall his name definitely not vaali or VM) aptly writes

kattilile aLLithandhaaL

Song: poNmaankuyil
Film: manasukkuL mathaapu
Singer : SPB
lyrics: S.A.Rajkumar
Music: S.A.Rajkumar

Naaz requested this song. He writes:

Manasukkul Maththaappoo was One Flew Over The
Kodaikanal Cuckoo's Nest. It first hibernated as
Thaalavattam (1986) in malayalam, and is currently
nestled as Kyon Ki in hindi.

In the tamizh version, Prabhu plays a psycho /
murderer brimming with such killer innocence and
mischief even the resident psychiatrist (Saranya)
wants to shore up all the cuteness to herself.
Pro-zapped like she's never been. You know it can't
end well.

-----------

Now that that's out of the way, let's just find
respite in this enchanting SPB solo. It's a song that
fills the heart with gentle spools of iridescence. I
apologise for the below-par recording, but things do
get tolerable after the first minute, and the light
takes a long time to fade.
SA Rajkumar displays some fine arrangements in the
interludes, and the song flits and ascends like a soap
bubble on a sunny meadow.

Its original ThalavOttam was by Mohanlal, Krithika (acted as Kamal's daughter in Nayagan) and Nedumudi Venu (as Senior doctor). Pathetic end of the story with mercy killing as the theme (??). Was it the same in Tamil version? Who acted in place of Venu? Sarathbabu???

Dear Narayanan, Usha

In Thalavattom, MLal suffering from mental imbalance (he happened to see his lover Lizzy getting electrocuted during a stage programmme) gets admitted in a hospital where Soman is the Chief and Karthika his daughter cum Doctor, attends to him.NVenu is another Dr. who is a family friend of MLal. Karthika slowly cures lal and in the process falls for him. Soman not accepting this relationship does an operation that immobilises Lal for the rest of his life. Venu unable to bear this does the mercy killing. Karthika now loses her mental imbalance and becomes a patient there. In Tamil also, the same treatment was there. It was Prabhu, Saranya as Dr, Lizzy as lover and Senthamarai was the chief. I don't remember the actor who did Venu's role. Otherwise everything was same.

Thanks for featuring the song and the commentary! It is reassuring to know that my picks (few and far between) resonate so vividly with the participants in this thread. Adhu Podhum Enakku! :)

What happened to the SAR of this calibre? Swallowed up by "assembly-line" TFM mediocrity? That's the sad thing. But this solo is his crowning glory, and a reminder of the fine potential that was commercially squandered.

SPB...Eththanai Sringaaramaai Paadugiraar! Delicious!

Coming to the song from "Maappillai Sir," I remember seeing this song on TV way back in 1999, when I was living at home with my family. I remember the song for Visu(?) stroking the hair of a doll on his lap. I figured this song was about a father's reminiscing over a lost daughter, as with the cuts of a cute little girl. I think that the cuts with Visu and the doll are especially effective in conveying pathos; just think about it, a grown man petting an inanimate object incapable of giving any affection in return.

I second Naaz on his bit on SAR's talent being squandered by commercialism. I would even go insofar as to compare SA Rajkumar to Mallu composer Ouseppachan. Both started out in the mid 1980s, both started out giving songs very similar to IR's style, both gave us false hopes with their debut films, and both eventually caved in to commercialism and gave mostly superficially catchy songs.

If I may address your question:

"SAR Perumai Pada Vaendiya Paadal...just a handful...painful tenure (!)"

The answer to your "how was this selected" query is also within your post! :)

This solo is a "rare" example of SAR's excellence. Sure, it was popular around the time of the film's release. And given the forgettable output by the same MD in the later years, you must admit that Ponmaankuyil seems to be more and more of an (exceptional) abberration?

Popular songs can also showcase some "lost" creativity that deserves celebration in this thread!

:)

If you been noticing, i always try to have atlease one 'known' song, if not more, per week. It kind of balances the selection and also makes the thread active(Look at the response for the first 2 selections of this week:) )

Next selection, hopefully, will be a rare song to most of us.

Coming to the storyline of MM, charanya will shoot senthamarai after he murders prabhu with his wild electrical plugs :)

http://raretfm.mayyam.com/stream/pow06/painthamizh_aot.rm

Song: painthamizhe vaa
Film: avaL oru thamizhachi
Singer : SPB
lyrics: ?
Music: M.S.Viswanathan

I might have said this many times before, but no harm in repeating :). Savithri and Saritha are 2 actress i admire for their
performances. They can handle any kind of role. Saritha must be the last heroine in TFM to have received performance oriented roles. Thanks to KB for exploiting her potential to the maximum extent. Not only she did good roles in tamil but also in telugu, malayalam and kannada too.
Like any good actor, she did overact sometimes but these instances were far and few.
After a fantastic debut in Marocharitra, KB and Saritha once again joined hands for another telugu venture 'kokilamma'.
She played a poor deaf girl who encourages her poor loverboy(Rajeev) to become a big singer. He does and he forgets her and marries a rich lady(Swapna). The storyline was kind of similar to aenipadigaL.
MSV came up with excellent songs and todays pick is one good one.

You can listent to the telugu version here:

Personally I liked SAR's chinna poove song from chinna poove mella pesu than manasukkul mathapoo. In fact it was the same team , isnt it which made both films isnt it?
In manasukkul mathapoo Suhasini was supposed to do Saranya's role & even papers carried ads with her pictures.
I have seen 'aval oru thamizhachi' in maris fort in Trichy.I remember the climax after Rajeev ditches Saritha ,she continues to carry on with her life by sticking cinema posters with the help of another disabled woman.(?blind)
I also remember the review in kumudham or vikatan which said 'ippadi appatamaana thelungu padathukku poi 'aval oru thamizhachi' endru KB per vaithirikiraar.
( this comment was due to the Telugu writings/posters that are seen thru out the movie)

Naaz, thanks for the comments..

how about a rare song of SPB by Chakravarthi/KVM/Sathyam/Ramesh Naidu? (the satlwarts of Telugu film songs of the 70s and early 80s, who in spite being very popular in Telugu could hardly make a dent in Tamil)

But one thing is true, your selections have been marvellous!

one small addendum:
I added KVM not to discredit his contribution to Tamil film in 50s/60s, but to just make a point that he was a super-star MD in 70s and early 80s, while in Tamil he was more a also-ran. However we cannot forget Enipadigal, Pallandhu Vazha, Kadhal Kiligal etc..

You approve, and I am reassured! :)

I recall that a PS/SPB duet for Satyam was featured in this thread a few months ago? "Thodangum Thodarum Puthu Uravu." (Mudisoodaa Mannan) A charming composition. Alas, my collection of songs has very few "dubbing" ditties - which is where we usually found Satyam, Chakravarthi, Ramesh Naidu...Talking of which, it would great to hear the serene PS solo from Pennukku Yaar Kaaval (MD: RN) "Kanne Kannaana Kannaa Ponnae..." which had an inspired interjection of "suvi aahaa suvi" I remember this solo fondly, although it is centuries since I heard it!
The film starred Jaya Chitra, and was a remake of the Telugu hit, Chillarakottu Chittamma. Ramki, can you send out those legendary (and resourceful) tentacles soon? :)

Song: bharathikku oru kaNNama
Film: Shankari
Singers : Swarna, Rajkumar Bharathi
lyrics: vaali
Music: VKumar

Thanks to NeelD for sharing this sweet melody. RB's sound very pleasant in this song and it was my favorite when it used to play in the radio.
I think 'shankari' was released in early 80's and VKumar was then working in very few films. The film had this good song and couple of PS solos(I will host them later). Saritha and shankar(i think) were the lead actors in shankari. I remember reading the review of this film but do not remember the details.

What was the last film by VK? Meendum Mahaan?

Ramki, nice melody (however VK has repeated his interludes from his other songs, with the beginning score sounding more like the Kaalam enakku thozhan, his one of the best numbers)

However mundane lyrics by Vaali

VK we all know respected PS. But one incident I read somewhere that VK made some harsh comments that PS could not sing the way he had expected her to do, and PS cried. This happened in 79/80 not sure for which song/film...

Song: thumthanathanathum
Film: Maya Bazaar 1995
Singer : Jolly Abraham
lyrics: vaali ?
Music: iLaiyaraja

Strange are the ways of our MDs. They neglect some singers when they are in their prime. What makes them remember these singers after decades will be a unsolved mystery. JA was one such singer.
He vanished from TFM for nearly 10-15 years and then IR gave him not one but 2 songs. The first one is todays pick and the second is 'oru chinna mani kuyilu' from kattapanchayathu.
Both were good melodies but both did not become big hits. JA vanished again . Will he resurface again? Chances are slim but who knows.

Maya bazaar 1995 was a stupid film. The film , inspired from Patrick Swayze's 'Ghost' with the roles reversed, had oorvasi and Ramki. I remember only one more song

Before you correct my own lyrics :) let me say that I got the first line wrong (tamizh version) Endrumae Nalla Raasi. Was this a prabalamaana paadal? When I think popular (or populist?) I think of songs like Ponnmeni Urugudhae, Nila Kaayudhu, Oram Po Oram Popular sort of songs...I somehow think IRs (dubbing) Keeravaani Iravilae, Kanavilae Paadavaa Nee had more air-time than the duet from IOK.

Request...

I have seen this movie as well! :) It had Urvasi & Ramki in double roles.
Urvasi acted as daughter of Visu who is a rich man.Urvasi though grown up would have the mental status of a child .( as usual)Visu tries hard to get her married and finally gets her married to Ramki who is his manager and good hearted.Visu dies soon after. After the marriage its known that Ramki is actually a bad man & he kills Urvasi.NowUrvasi the ghost meets another Urvasi who is a dubakur billi suniyam lady. With this Urvasi's help pazhi vangum padalam is achieved. In the climax it is known that the first Ramki( good one) is actually locked up in a paathala room by the second one and it is this 2nd one who had actually killed Urvasi. For the 2nd Ramki Swarna was the jodi. I remember there was a song for this jodi in a swimming pool.
I had today's pick song in my collection along with the chinna manikuyilu song. The negative aspect in the latter song was Bhavatharini's voice.

Song: malargaLin raaja

Music: Thyagarajan

This week i chose to focus on singers who never made big in TFM.
Todays pick has a catchy tune, fresh voices, decent interludes and was aired frequently. As far as i know, and to my total puzzlement, this is the only song by these two singers. Mallikas voice sounds close to BSSasirekha's but slightly better.
Dhanasekar has a soft voice and with proper training and encouragement could have made it big.

http://raretfm.mayyam.com/stream/pow06/maalai_t.rm

I think kunnakkudi is one of the most successful MD's who crossed-over from pure canatic to films. I like many of his filmy tunes (well.. excluding songs like 'kottaambattai roattile' ). Several of them were lilting - especially the very light classical numbers. Here's one such from ThiruvaruL. It happens to be PS' personal favorite under Kunnakkudi's music.

On the movie, I saw it but only remember AVm Rajan starred in it :( I hope NOV or someone will throw more light?

Other popular songs in this movie are: kanthan kaaladiyai vanginaal, kandukonden, ulagangal yaavum - all 3 by TMS.

I recollect seeing JAYA a telugu actress playing wife of AVMR who also sang Radhayin nenjamay ( Kil there HIndi lift ) in another movie.

Kunnakudi's most famous will be Marudhamalai mamaniyay from Deivam!

Also, I love Paal pongum paruvam , a song during which he plays around with swarajathi !

RR, Premananth has given most info. :)

I was barely a teenager when I watched this film and was totally moved by it. We had an audio shop then and this was one the few runaway hit albums. Thiruvarul came a couple of years after the successful Deivam, produced by the same Dhandayudhapani Films with the direction by (Devar’s son-in-law) Thiyagarajan. Dramatic AVM Rajan was paired with Jaya and one more actor I distinctly remember is Major Sundarrajan. Jaya sings this POW in front of a temple, as a flower girl. The movie relates the story of the building of Devar’s asthaana kOvil at Marudha Malai. Songs in the movie:

Maalai vanna maalai - PS
Engum niraindhirukkum engal gurusaami – TMS
Ulagangal yaavum un arasaangamE – TMS (Bharadwaj used the beginning music for one of his songs – guess!)
Malaigalil sirandha malai Marudha malai – Sirghaazhiyaar
Kandhan kaaladiyai vananginaan – TMS
Thangam perithendru – TMS
Marudha malaikku neenga vandhu paarunga – TMS
Kandukonden kandukonden – TMS (now you know which song inspired the Aiswariya starrer!)

Great songs!
Hats of to Kunnakudiyaar :notworthy:

Regarding Dhanashekar and Mallika: Dhanashekar is a doctor by profession; tried his luck with film music. This song MalargaLin Raja was a major hit. (Late) Sasikumar and Stage actress M.Bhanumathi acted for this song. Very youthful and different voices. I remember Prameela acted in dual role with Ravichandran as her hero. 3-week run in theatre Paragon (Opp. Children's Theatre/KalaivaaNar Arangam).

Dhanashekar and Mallika had sung another duet from the film Thalaattu, starting with "thandhaikkO oru piravi thaayarukkO iru piravi". This film was acted by one Pandiyan (not Bharathiraja's) and (Late) Vijayashree (acted in Babu with Sivaji). This is also a decent pattu. Released in Wellington theatre.

***

If I remember correct, GK venkatesh has sung a folk sort of duet with L.R.Eswai in Thendral Veesum. Not sure of starting line... enna maamaa kobamaa OR something like that.

Sathyakabali: Did not Prem nazeer and Sandhya also acted in Thendral veesum?

***

"Sounds like kaNNadasan was in a great romantic mood."

Ramki: In which duet song KKD sOdai pOnaar? :-)

All songs of Veera Abhimanyu are treat to music lovers. Though the film had a mis-fit of actor like AVM Rajan, the music and songs were the saviours.

***

Thiruvarul was a moderate hit film wherein, as usual, all songs were sung by TMS & PS.

Ramki, listen to PS's another solo "thangam peridhendru", you would love it.

***

Ramki: If you have "Nadu jaamaththil vandhEnE" sung by one obscure singer called Chaaya Devi for the film "Kadhavai thattiya mohin pEi", please share paNNungO.

Song: santhana nilavoLi
Movie: Lakshmi vanthaachu
Singer: MV
Lyrcis: ?
MD: Ravindran

http://raretfm.mayyam.com/pow06/santhananilavoli_lv.rm

This is a tough song. It runs at crazy speeds (demanding excellent breath control), and also spans a wide range. I should say MV has done a real good job.

The song is set in Kalyana vasantham (same as Keeravani except Rishabam and Pachamam are not used in aarohanam) - a beautiful raga that gives a pathos feel. Ravindran has made it happy by composing a fast tune. Ninnaye rathiyendru (my favorite filmy K.V.), nalla manam vaazhga, kaanji pattuduthi are other songs in this raga.

Could someone share details about the movie?

Lakshmi vandhachu was one movie which Nadigar thilagam did in lighter vein. Natiya peroli Padmini plays his wife role
Its actually a remake of Kubsoorat ( a Rekha & rakesh Roshan starrer ). While Ashok kumar plays the father role, NT plays his role in tamil version
A cheerful Revathy enters NT's house ( NT will behave as if he is henpecked ) and what folllows was all mayhem as she breaks all the set rules / code of conduct set by Padmini.
Naturally, a rift surfaces between Padmini and Revathy as the entire family veers around Revathy including NT.
Finally all ends well with Nizalgal Ravi getting engaged to Revathy ( a melodrama also in the form of Revathy suffering from ailment etc )

Overall, a nice movie worth watching with family

I think this song appears when NT and the family members go out and Revathy dances while being supported by Jayachitra in some garden area

RR & Ramki: unga rendu pErukkum manamaarndha nandri for hosting very rarely heard songs.

Lakshmi Vandhachu song has the maximum shades of keeravaaNi, IMHO.

Hope some of you had seen the original hindi film. Very lively acting by Ashok Kumar and Rekha. Whereas the tamil version (directed by Rajasekhar ??), had over-liveliness in the lead atrists Sivaji and Revathi (Girl-friendu... Boy-friendu...). Padmini with her terrible hair-style was a mis-cast. I read in a mag that due to out-of-touch of a good dialogue delivery with proper modulations, she struggled a lot. It seems Sivaji had tried to help her to make it good. In Hindi original, Dina Pathak (Padmini's part) came out with a decent show.

Jayachitra (weighing min 75 kg :-) replacing Shasikala of Hindi), did dance very well for this. Of course Revathi too.

If I remember correct JC paired with Sivaji-Padmini's first son Prasanna ('Sirai' GurukkaL). SV Shekar (2nd son) with Arundathi and NizhalgaL Ravi (3rd son) with Revathi.

Song: kaN niRaintha uruvam kaNNaa
Movie: Sree Krishna Leela
Singer. S. Varalakshmi
Lyrics: ?
MD: ?

http://tfmpage.com/stream/pow06/kan_niraintha.rm

(I hosted 'lakshmi vanthaachu'. Now in this pick vara'lakshmi' vanthaachu! :) )_

This song is sponsored by Neel D. He writes:

S.Varalakshmi is one of the two singing voices that bowled me over when
I was still a little kid. Majesty was her asset. Whether acting or
singing, she did it with impressive majesty. In the well known film
Veerapandiya Kattabomman she plays Kattabomman's wife Jakkamma, and
what a royal pair did Sivaji and Varalakshmi make. And of course, the
magnificient Akkaal Kundavai in Rajaraja Chozhan. Both films have
wonderful songs by SV.

Kannadasan says in his memoir "Sandhithen Saindhithen" her voice as
being unique, and I learn that she was one of his favorite singers.
S.Varalakshmi played one of the leading ladies in the multistarrer
"Sivagangai Seemai" produced by Kannadasan. She sang at least three
songs for that film.

S.Varalakshmi was born in Andhra Pradesh. As a child she went through
rigorous trianing in singing, and the result shows in every one of her
songs. She started acting and singing way back in the 1940s and has
paired with many of the greatest leading men of the 40s, 50s and 60s.
Apart from her solos, she has also sung duets and trios with many of
the greatest singers during her singing career spanning about fifty
years. I wish she was offered more chances to sing. The total number of
Tamil songs she recorded could be well below one hundred. I remember
reading in one of her interviews, that she would ask for a chance to
sing in the film whenever someone offered her a role in a film. It was
a good stand for her singing career but considering the business
practices in the industry it may have adversely affected her acting
career. Now she is older and retired. Two years ago Tamilnadu
government honored her with Kavignar Kannadasan Award.

There probably were a few Sri Krishnaleelas produced (or dubbed) over the years. But going by the style and recording quality it sounds like the song is from the 70s.

PremAnanth,

Aanmaiyaana? :-) How about Gambeeramaana?
I think SV,SG and TRM all have big voices and sing full-throated. If one likes that kind of singing, which is not in vogue anymore, Rajarajachozhan is an absolute feast. There is a yahoo group for SV songs and you will find some really rare songs there.

Hello RR, based on the tenderness of voice of SV, I think this is not from the Krishna leela directed by APN. It must have been in 50's. May be SVR was scoring music that period.

Anyway, nice song to hear.

premananth

Yes, RR.

I have checked in the VCD. SVVR was the MD fo SKL. If you listen Anbe Uyarnthathu from the same movie also sounds like 50's era.

The anbe uyarnthathu plays after the visiting of Kuselar (Nagesh). If I'm not mistaken the kuselar's wife is G.Sakunthala. (another favorite artiste of APN)

SKL which leads by Sivakumar, Jeyalalitha, Sri Vidya, SVL, Nagesh was released on 10 Nov 1977. Produced by R.M.Subramaniam, directed by APN and Music by SVVR.

Song: inangaLile enna inam
Movie: nalla peNmaNi
Singer. KJY, K Swarna
Lyrics: ?
MD: V. Kumar

http://tfmpage.com/stream/pow06/inangalile_np.rm

The earlydays veNNai-voiced KJY is so lovable in this song, and the tune is addictive. Not to mention the lyrics! Apparently PS was supposed to sing, but she was so impressed with Swarna that she requested VK to keep the track version.

I somehow get reminded of 'neela nayanangalil' (the overall style) when I hear this song.

I only know that Muthuraman stars in the movie. Story, picturisation?

RR,

Inagalilae lyrics by Pulamai Pithan.

Prem,

No song by SV in Uyira Maanama or for that matter Panamaa Paasama. She has another song in Thanga Surangam. She will sing when she realises that her son Shivaji, the CBI officer is up against his own father OAK Thevar. I don't remember the song now.

Song: annan kaiyil valarntha kiLi
Movie: poRkaalam
Singer: Yugendran
Lyrics: VM
MD: Deva

http://tfmpage.com/stream/pow06/annan_pk.rm

poRkaalam is a very good movie by Cheran that I think got > 55 marks in Aa.Vi. The story revlolves around Murali and his struggles to get his mute sister Rajeswari married (after this movie, she became 'poRkaalam' Rajeswari). In the second half, the sister unable to watch her brother going thru turmoils because of her, decides to end it all and so goes and sits inside the kALavAi. Murali unknowingly will put it on fire. This bit song comes during this scene in the background. In the climax, Murali will ditch her lover Meena and marry a handicapped girl.

This song is meant for the sister, but it is sing by a male. Can you guess why? :)

RR,

In the recent years, all philosophical songs and asariri songs have become a male domain. There was a time when SJ sang songs like "nI pAdum pAdal ethu" and VJ like "mUngil ilai kAdugaLE". I always think how wonderful it would have been if VJ had sung Bharadwaj's "avar avar vAzhkkaiyil". But it is very hard to find such female vocals anymore. You may find one or two in ARR's music.

Neel,

That's an interesting thoery. Actually I was looking for a direct one. But the reason may be as simple as yours. "mun paniyaa" was supposed to have been sung by VJ but for some reason SPB version came out ultimately. The movie situation was more female-oriented, so VJ would've been apt.

A 'misty' duet with cool pre, inter and postludes. I think, in the movie, Banuchander and Shoba will be riding a bike during this song.

As you know this movie is based on Late Rajendra kumar's story "Naragathukku puthiyavan"(?). I had read the story before watching the movie. This week began with grandeur, and ended with a feathery, breathless dissolve.

How else to describe S.Varalakshmi? Grand is just another inadequate qualifier for the calibre of her voice. Listening to it is a blessing.

Inangalilae Enna Inam...a balm, an antidote for all the noise that passes for music these days in TFM.

Paruvakaalangalin Kanavu...that wispy kiss of youth, dreams racing to catch up with possibilities. An IR reverie, revived.

Loved it. More! :D

Song: kettalum kidaikadhamma
Movie: sattaiyilladha pambaram
Singers: SJ, MV, GA
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan
MD: IR

Another SJ-MV duet but very much in contrast to yesterday's pick. 'paruva kaalangaLin' is a breezy westernised duet and 'kettaalum' is a rustic, folkish, sweet and innocent duet.

'sattaiyilla pambaram' has saritha ,sivakumar, vinuchakravarthy etc in the lead(Todays song picturised on these 3). Story/screenplay was by KBakyaraj. I have watched the film but donot remember much. The song was a popular one in MadrasB but i later discovered many are not aware of this song. I love the lyrics and the way GA sings the song at the end.

'nenjil poo manjangaL' is another jazzy duet by SJ-MV from SIP.

Thanks to NeelD for providing the song.

Song: andhi nera thendral kaatru
Movie: inaindha kaigaL
Singers: SPB, Jayachandran
Lyrics: aabavanan?
MD: Gyan Verma

Yesterday the expectant dad and mom expressed the dreams and ambitions for their soon to arrive kid.
Today the dad is away from his family on a mission. In the midst of it he receives the good news of his son's birth. He shares his joy
with friends and strangers. The poetic lyrics very well expresses the longings of the new dad and SPB sings it with his usual style.

As far as i know 'andhi nera' is the only duet by SPB and JC. IMO their voices do not gel very well. IK was also the first solo film for Gyan(of Manoj gyan jodi). couple of years ago Manoj bhatnakar did music for films like endrendum kaadhal and a prashanth-riya sen film(both films were produced by Manoj himself :) ).

Nalla Padal Ramki!

Madhu, I am not sure of the scene. Why would they play a mother-son song as a background of a romantic scene. Moreover the full song comes later when Vani is widowed and sings for Kutti Sivaji. Unless Rajendra Prasad thought it differently. Some pieces of "Ullam Irnadu" in PS-s voice would have been more apt.

Susheela brings a unique sweetness to the song.

Song: appa un magaLai
Movie: kavitha
Singer: PSuseela
Lyrics: kaNNadasan?
MD: KVMahadevan

PSuseela is one female singer who has sung for almost all the different female character types. Mother, daughter, sister, grandma, aunt, sister in law and ofcourse wife and lover. You name it and there will be a PS song for that character.
This week i plan to host 5 such songs.

Todays pick is for a daughter singing in her father's dream.
The father gets sick after hearing the sufferings of his daughter. She is abused by her husband, The husband the father chose for her against her wishes.
Rangarao, Rajasulochana and MRRadha played those characters.
I remember watching bits and pieces of this film on DD. If i remember correctly RS had a dual role in Kavitha.
Rajasulochana , like pushpalatha, altered between playing second leads and main lead. She has played the heroine for likes of MGR and Sivaji. But who in the gods name would have imagined her doing the vamp role in Gayathri? Her on screen leelais with Rajinikanth was just nauseating.
She was in the news recently for chasing her husband out of her house.

Enought about RS lets talk about pS.
What are the other songs PS sang for 'daughters'?
'oru naaL iravu' , 'oru naaL varuvaaL mommy mommy' come to my mind immediately.

Others?

The song doesnt need any introduction. Going by the discussion we recently had on this song, its still remembered and favored by Music fans.
PS at her absolute best. Her voice expresses every tiny feeling the character experiences at that juncture. It shows love, trust, lust , fear, joy all in correct proportions . kaNNadasan too expresses all those feelings in his lines. MSV's melodious music and tune makes this song immortal.

Ramki

Rare composistion and I think well ahead of that time. just close your eyes and listen the interlude, you can feel the silence of night .
I think this song picturised in rainy day where shivaji and major happily coming back to home after remebering childhood days.
I feel something difference in this song and I am not able to express.

PS showed all the feeling in just one humming. Ever green.
