Another melodious song set to a jubiliant mood from RVV(Ramayi) is "chinna ponnu manam ponni nadhi veLLam pole" , sung by SJanaki. I could watch only one half of RVV in our good old podhigai , last year. For today's Tamil Film standards, I must admit it was a pretty neatly made film with plausible story line, innocent village characters aka BR films. I wanted to watch the whole film

Song: pullankuzhal mozhi
Film: oorum uravum
Singers: SPB , Vanijairam
Lyrics: pulamaipithan
Music: shankar Ganesh

Thanks to Thiru for requesting this nice melody. As I mentioned last week, SG duo frequently surprised music listeners by creating gems like today's pick. SPB and VJ add more saccharine to already sweet song but still we are left asking for more.

'oorum uravum' had sivaji, KRV, nizhalgaL ravi and sumalatha(??). I remember reading couple of reviews on this film and they all said good stuff. I think the film is about a whole village educating a student(NR?) who later forgets his roots and rots in selfishness.

'piLLaiyai' by TMS, PS is another ok duet from OU.

Second part of SPB's interview:

http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/odam_kr.rm

Song: odam kadalodum
Film: kaNmani Raja
Singers: PSuseela, SPB
Lyrics:kaNNadasan?
Music: MSV

Romantic duet at its best. The soft melodious voices, breezy interludes and interesting lines makes this song a very pleasant one. The first interlude begins with a whistle sound. I think MSV used this whistle sound in many of his 70s songs. Songs like 'janakarin magaLai', 'sollathaan ninaikkiren', 'nenjathile nee netru vandhai'(not a 70s song) etc had nice 'whistling' interludes.

'kaNmani Raja' had sivakumar and Lakshmi in the lead. I remember reading Lakshmi's interview where she mentioned that majority number of her films are with Sivakumar.
KR also had the extremely popular duet 'kaadhal viLaiyaada'

ramki, there is a duet by SPB & PS "Kaathal jothi anaiyaathathu". Is it from Oorum uravum OR Kadhal Jyothi (an old film, story by CN Annadurai).

Sivakumar and Lakshmi was one of the best pairs of those days, even now too. their best picture was avan, aval, adhu.

Song: deviye naan saranam
Film: thanga thaamaraigaL
Singers: SPB, Chitra
Lyrics:?
Music: iLaiyaraja.

This is a nice but fairly unknown duet by IR from early 90s. SPB sings with his usual charm while chitra does the humming with ease.

I thought TT had Murali in the lead but according to FM, the film had Arjun and Rupini . When i searched online, i discovered the film did indeed have Arjun and Rupini and is directed by VAzhagappan.
(FM can never be wrong about paadavathi movies:).

maamanai paaru maalaiyai podu(chorus) is another good song from TT.

http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/megam_pm.rm

Song: megam rendu serum
Film: poi mugangaL
Singer: SPB
Lyrics: vairamuthu
Music: Chandrabose

A scintillating melody to conclude our SPB week.

From gayathiri to vaanam vasapadum, films based on Sujathas novels never found success at the B.O.(except for the highly butchered 'Priya').
Majority of his novels were either thrillers or mysteries. He occasionally wrote dramas. 'kaagitha uravugaL' was one of them.
This came as a thodarkadhai in saavi in early to mid 80's. I still remember the pictures Maa.Se drew for this story. The story is about a newly married woman's struggle to find a kidney donor for her husband. His kin, including his parents , refuses to donate.
He finally dies. ItS a sad story very well written by Sujatha.

After the story finished its series, 2 films were started based on it. One had Ambika and Rajkumar and the other was with Sulakshana and Ravichandran(kannada). The first one was never completed . The second one came out with the title 'poi mugangaL'. and it had a happy ending(and with lots of extra masala). Needless to say it was a flop. Kannada Ravichandran made his debut in this film and i think he was introduced as Rakesh.

The film boasted 3 good songs by CB.
'ingu naam kaanum paasam'(KJY)
'thottukondaal oar inbam'(KJY) and
today's pick.

Todays pick is one of my CB favorites. SPBs soft vocals , the violin interludes and VM's excellent poetry makes this song exceptional(atleast to me :)

Is it the debut film for Ravichandran ? or "paruva ragam" (1986)came earlier ?

Wonderful collections this week. Unable to login last few days. Thanks a lot Ramki!

Thanks Madhu for the correction on the 'Naalu Madhangal' song.

ALso there was a movie that was announced with the same name (as the story) called :kaagidha Sangiligal' By Panchu Arunachalam. It was supposed to cast Suman (as the Kidney Patient) and Sumalatha (as the wife) with IR as the MD. Not sure what happened, the movie never saw the lime light. Polydor (MIL ) was supposed to release the album. Does this sounds familiar to any one?

This song suggles you up with the dreaminess of a lullaby. I was one of those mugangals that gave Poi Mugangal three hours of my life. A hapless minority for sure.
Having said that, let me run and hide face 8)

The featured song is a note-by-note lift of Pankaj Udhas's
"Deewaron Se Mil Kar Rona Achcha Lagta Hai
Hum Bhi Paagal Ho Jaayenge Aaisa Lagta Hai"

Thanks for this solo.

Pick #98

http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/kanvi_vs.rm

Song: kaNvizhi enbadhu
Film: vaLaiyal satham
Singers: SJanaki, KJYesudoss
Lyrics: Muthulingam
Music: MSV

'vaLaiyal satham' is one of the several obscure movies of MuraLi that are still remembered only for their songs. Usually MuraLis film have IR's music. Vs is one of (or only one?) Muralis film with MSV's music. I think VS had MuraLi and saradha preetha.
Todays pick has a complex pallavi . Muthulingam displays his excellent talent with poetic lines and KJY,SJ sings with their know ease.
I remember one more solo by KSC 'aezhai kudisaiayil koozhai kudikkira'(FM's favoirte song) :)

one more song that I know: 'nandha vana kuyilukku indha manam' by KJY & KSC.

I remember Silk & Kavundamani Comedy scene :)

speaking of obscure movies by MSV, there are plenty of them in that time frame. some of the movies that I immediately could think about them are "Raasaathi kalyaaNam" and "thanga kalasam". Raasathi kalyaaNam had a beautiful solo by KSC [raasaathi ennai thEdi varuvaarE] and the more popular one was "ippadiyum nadakkum endru"[it was popular in Mars].

Pick #99

http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/mouna_ejp.rm

Song: mounam aen mouname
Film: en jeevan paaduthu
Singers: Chitra, Mano
Lyrics: Panju Arunachalam?
Music: iLaiyaraja

Many times i wonder why ,and , how an amazingly soulful song can go unrecognised. Today's pick is a pure gem. The song has everything going for it..brilliant interludes, nice vocals(one of Mano's best), good lyrics. But still the song is long forgotten. Even when the film was released the song was not given much (or any) air time.
EJP, like all IR-Sunderarajan combos, had excellent songs.

'ore murai un dharisanam'-My all time SJ fav
'kaadhal vaanile' -SJ
'katti vachukko indha'-SJ,MV
'engirundho azhaikkum-LM, IR, Mano

'engirundho azhaikkum' was the only song from EJP that was listened to and asked for more.

EJP, i think, is 'the sixth sense' of Tamil films. The lead in both films can see (or talk to) dead people. I might be wrong, but i remember from the reviews that Charanya can see and talk to Karthik's ghost(or soul, whatever). The film did not go well but the songs are unforgettable.

Yes..Saranya can see and talk to Karthik's ghost! Kapildev sings this song when he & Saranya get engaged in the movie. This is one of the movies I sat through just for the songs, during my college days. The other one I remember going through the pain is Solla thudikkuthu manasu!

Song: kadalodu nadhikenne kobam
Film: arthangaL aayiram
Singer : SPB
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan?
Music: Shankar Ganesh

I do not want to sound repititive but SG duo often 'exceeded exceptions' and todays pick is a perfect example of their exemplary 'performance'. An excellent tune , very well written lyrics, zestful SPB - a winning combination and thats what we have with this song.

More than the histrionics, it must have been the youthful looks of the 3 heroines that must have drawn the male audience to the film. Though BL was not perceived to be a big threat to the tamil MDs, still his tunes in this film gave us transient pleasure ie hear and forget types.

Film: yaanai vaLartha vaanambadi magan
Singers : PSuseela, SPB

Music: KVMahadevan

This is one of SPB's early duet with PS. His voice has changed a lot since. PS sings for Master Prabhakar. Prabhakar, during the course of song, grows into Anandhan(disco shanthis father). SPB sings for him.

Manisegaran, from KVM thread:

Yanai Valartha Vanambadi Magan- this was the second comeback of Anandan. There was a fight scene in which Aandandan struggles with python. It was so realistic and the film was making waves in Madurai- the stronghold of MGR. The MGR fans were very angry and threatened to burn the theatre should the film continued to be screened. Anadan was a handsome, talented and upcoming star. Was acting in many movies as a dancer and finally shot into famin in Vijayapuri Veeran. That was an instant hit, and MGR felt threatened. Through the normal cinema politics he was cleaned off- by a word of mouth to the producers and irectors. He did surface his head, unfortunately in small roles and mostly as villain.

A loss to the cine industry. He was only able to leave behind Disco Shaanthi. He had a very lovely smile for which many ladies patronised his movies. Just watch the scene paadatha Paattellam Paada Vanthaal in Veerathirumagan for his sweet smile.

Song: i will sing for you
Film: ManidharuL maanikkam
Singer: TMS
Lyrics: vaali?
Music: MSV

Much has said about this hilarious song set to the difficult 'karaharapriya' raagam. Many consider this as MSV's best fusion song.
The song is for Sivaji. He is forced to sing by a crazy woman(pramiLa?) at knife point. Manorama, in paavadai thaavani, dances for this song. I think Sivaji did a guest role in this film. AVMRajan is the hero? Not sure.
I just remember watching this song in OO. Sivaji with a goatee and clad in a tight tee with a bulging belly sings this song whil Pramila chases him with a knife.

I still remember him saying the last dialogue "love is god-da!"... standing near the bodies of AVM Rajan and Prameela !
AVM Rajan is a robber and Prameela as a gypsy girl.
Some more songs like "manam uLLavan evanO avanthAn manidharil mANikkam" by MSV and "rathirikku rathiri en ninaippu vara veNum" by LRE are also there !

Though the film is mediocre, and not upto the mark during its release.. Shivaji got appreciation for his "loose doctor" character by many critics..

Song: thirupathi malaiyil
Film: vaazhvu en pakkam
Singer: MSV
Lyrics: kaNNadasan
Music: MSV

Actress Lakshmi can infuse life to even ordinary roles. When she is given a role that needs good performance, she makes it even better with her subdued but powerful performance.
'vaazhvu en pakkam' is one such film. in VEP Muthuraman ( the favorite hero of heroine oriented films), plays a rich guy who marries a dumb girl Lakshmi. His family is against this marriage and they physically abuse her . Unable to tolerate their abuse she flees. Todays song is played in this sequence. Lakshmis expression in this song is a treat to watch.
MSV, a talented singer with so so voice, wisely chooses the song he gives voice to. He always sang the asareeri song or for some unimportant character. Todays song is for a train beggar-saamiyar.

VEP is another inspiration of geetha aur seetha. Lakshmi played a dual role. The movie was just ok but her acting made it watchable.

The mikes, Mohan and Murali, are the 2 heroes who benefitted the most from IR' s songs. Even their worst movies had best songs.
AOV is one such bad film. The film had Mohan, urvasi , Raasi etc. Only the songs are memorable.
The joyful 'azhagaana pookaL' (SPB's version of todays pick)
the soulful 'jodi nadhigaL'(SPB) and the romantic duets
'kaadhil kettadhu'(MV,UR) and 'idazhil amudham'(KJY,VJ) are all musical treats.
Todays pick is one of SJ-IR-VM combos best. The songs sounds like hindustani based one but i'm not sure.

This song must have had its beginning in one of those very vibrant moods of Raja...with excellent guitar leads in the prelude / counter melodies...Soulful singing by SJ...especially when she sings `kanavOdu' in a twisted mode ..ghazalish...(probably that adds to the overall `hindustani' feel)...excellent choice Ramki!

IMHO, 'azhagaana pookal' is a classier version of this song. 'jodi nadhigal' is also a great number. What a contrast SPB brings out in these two songs..! Must be two of his bests (among the rare ones).. Both are my alltime favorites..

Song: oru keLvi unnai ketkiren

'Priyam' could be called a debut of disasters. Neither the vaarisu arunkumar nor the voluptuous Manthra could help this sorry piece from sinking. I happen to watch a few minutes of the film and couldnt make out whats happening or why the film was even made.

Vidyasagar, who was slowly making his mark in the music scene ,was the only saviour. Though his dilruba hogged the limelight, today's pick and 'udaiyadha vennilla' is best of all. Unni and Sujatha gives their best. To my untrained ears, this song, too , sounds like a hindustani tune.

Madhu: yes kumari pennin uLLathile is a Bhagyaraj and Radhika starrer. I had the misfortune of seeing this one. Bhagyaraj who is in love with Radhika helps(?) her become an actress. But she is in love with Vijayababu, I think. In the end, Bhagayaraj gets killed by villains but before dying unites Radhika & Vijayababu. ponnoviyam ondru is a duet for Bhagayaraj & Radhika where she performs(poses) in bharathanatyam attire.

Another less known gem of SJ and one of her best songs for Sridevi. 'POI' became popular for skimpily clad sridevi and the heavenly 'iLamai enum poongaatru'. Other songs like todays pick, 'ponnaaram poovaaram','thottam konda' and 'kalaiyo silaiyo'
were rarely played on radio.
IMO, Sridevi is the only actress who has paired with likes of sivaji, vijayakumar to young stars like arvind swamy, salman, shah rukh etc. In POI she had 2 pairs (i think)-ravikumar and vijaykumar.

Song: thoduvaanam romba thooram
Film: nyaya tharasu
Singer: PSuseela
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
Music: Shankar Ganesh

Malayalam films of early 80s can be classified into 2 categories: slow or sleaze. Then a crop of new directors like bhadran, sibi malayil , hariharan etc brought in an excellent change and malayalam films started getting notice for their brilliance.
'Panchagni' directed by Hariharan is one such film. DD's regional service showed this film on a lazy sunday afternoon. I started watching without any interest or prior knowledge of the film.
The story starts in a jail. A female prisoner(played by actress Geetha) is released on parole to visit her dying mother. The story then travels with her. We are shown flashbacks of her past, the reason for her imprisonment. She has a drug addict brother, a sister(Played by Nadhiya) married to heroine's ex boyfriend. No one wants to speak to a prisoner. A journalist (Mohanlal) befriends her and they fall in love. Her only confidante is her close friend(idhayam nallennai chitra) who is married to a abusive husband.
Geethas mother dies and she moves out of the house to live with Mohanlal. When you think the film is going to end on a happy note, a shocking twist comes in the end .
The film was excellent. Geetha, Mohanlal, chitra, thilakan each and every actor were at their best.

Panchagni was remade in tamil as 'nyaya tharasu'. Radha chosen played Geethas role and nizhalgal ravi for Mohanlal. I think Anand babu played the junkie brother. I did not watch the tamil version but know it was a flop. Shankar Ganesh, who were at the tail end of their career, came out with few good songs.
Vaanam arugil oru vaanam(KJY)
vennilla ennodu (Mano)
yaarukku aarudhal(KJY,PS) and today's pick.

Todays pick has a brilliant violin interlude after the first charanam. Though PS voice sound jaded, it still expresses the desired emotion of the character.

I never knew that Nadiya acted in Panchagni. In Tamil, no idea about Nadiya's replacement, but I know very well that NalleNNai Chitra was replaced by Kutti Padmini.

SN23

Ellorum nallavare was produced by Gemini Production but after the demise of SS.Vasan. SSV's last Tamil film was ViLayaattu piLLai. EN production was under SS.Balan S/o SS.Vasan. He himself directed the movie.

Manjula was the heroine in all 3 languages Telugu (Soban babu) and Hindi (Veteran RajKumar). All 3 flopped, though the story was good and the climax flood scenes were pictuirsed well.

Later Gemini Films under somebody else produced Janani. The rights of GF were sold to that somebody.

Song is excellent, but how about the picturisation, esp when the SJ sings like seashore waves? It was THE worst. Many dailogue in between with Sivaji, KR Vijaya involved, wherein in Upstairs Geethanjali sings and dances to Muthuraman (as if it was a background song). I am of teh view that second half of the song was completely spoiled in the movie.

Last month my dad had met vaali in a book release function. They were meeting after almost 50 yrs. My dad mentioned that they fondly recalled their 'appaLa kudumi' and 'postoffice' trouser days :).
I was curious to know more about vaalis 'family'life. vaali never talks about his personal life in his interviews.
Thats when my father recalled this interesting incident.
When vaali started to work in cinema, his family arrange for his wedding.
When everything was settled and engagement day fixed, vaali disappeared from his house the day before his betrothal. No one could find him and his betrothal was cancelled. 2 days later vaali came back to srirangam , not alone, but with his new bride. My mom says the bride was actress geethanjali.

Sivachandran showed some promise as a director with a difference, but lost his way in the middle. After Lakshmi's death, the movie becomes unbearable. Sivachandran should have taken effort to shape up the hero's character as well.

Music: iLaiyaraja

One of the best PS solo in IR's music. The starting train whistle sound, the 'dham dham dham' humming that follows the charanams, the guitar interludes and ofcourse PS voice makes this song heavenly. Though the films had other good songs, IMO, todays pick is musically the best.

Hi Ramki !

thanks for the song "ponnoviyam onru"..
equally the beautiful melody "onrodu onranom"...
this song comes as the memories of sujatha goes back to her days with her hubby Vijayan...

IR used the voice of PS at its best...

Undoubtedly "onrodu onnaanom" is the best melody from Anbukku naan adimai. I used to long for this song while the other one "Kaatrodu poourasa" always hogged the airtime. The interlude music is heavenly.

People often complain about `synth' sounds in current songs of IR. Another popular notion is that `synth' sounds were introduced by IR's successors which IR is forced to adopt because of its popularity / cost effectiveness etc.

They should listen to `anbukku nAn adimai' songs (or another Devar films production `Ram Lakshman')...these were nothing but full of `synth' sounds of a kind...(what instrument would you call the `vovavvavEN,vovavvavEN' sound after `kAttiloru singakkuttiyAm', for e.g.)

I don't think one should equate midi with synth...anything that's produced without natural instrument (even if it's from a Casio KB) should be called `synth', IMHO...

Song: sila sila aandugaL munnam
Singer : PLeela
Film: engaL selvi
Lyrics: ?
Music: KVMahadevan

This is a haunting solo by PLeela. The film had 2 more good songs

Engal Selvi is a story that goes very parallel to KALLO KAVIYAMO by Dr Mu Vaatharajan. Likewise Paarthaal PASI Theerum aligns with NENJIN ALAIKAL by Akilam. SARATHA is again a movie that has a storyline close with SINEGITHI by Akilan. Akilan took up a case against the producer of SARATHA, but the High Court passed a judgement that Saratha has nothing to do with Sinegithi.

Pick #122

http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/raaja_dmp.rm

Song: raaja vaada singakutti
Film: dhisai maariya paravaigaL
Singers : Sjanaki, Jaichandran
Lyrics: kaNNadasan
Music: MSViswanathan

'DMP' should have been a dream debut for any new face. The story was heroine centred with ample scope for performance.
But for Sumalatha it was anything but disappointing. The story was well above average and for a debutant, sumalathas performace was really noteworthy but at B.O. DMP was damp squib.
The story is about a agraharam girl(sumalatha) who is engaged to another iyer boy(sarathbabu). Just before the marriage everyone comes to know that the girl is born to a prisoner and was adopted by the agraharam parents. The marriage is canceled and everyone in the agraharam give her the cold shoulder. unable to bear the indifference she runs away from the agraharam, only to be chased by a rapist. She takes refuge in a church(and so does the story) and later turns into a nun. Nothing much happens after this.

I remember 2 more songs from DMP. Title song by TMS and
'uLLam urugaadha'(VJ)

Todays pick is a dream song . An odd(or funny) aspect of the song is these lines.
The kids sing 'mummy mummy kiss me kiss me'
Then JC follows 'anbu THAMIZH pattu ' :)

Pick #123

http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/poovum_pp.rm

Song: poovum thendral kaatrum
Film: Pick Pocket
Singers : SPB, Chitra
Lyrics: Vaali?
Music: iLaiyaraja

We have seen many unrecognised melodies in our past picks. Here is another gem. As far as i know vividh bharathi never played this song. Have listened to this a couple of times on tiruchi and coimbatore stations and thats it.
Every alternative movie of late 80s had sathyaraj in the lead and he was mostly paired with either radha or ambika. PP had Radha.
I remember reading horrible reviews on this film. No wonder the songs too disappeared from the memories.
What are the other songs in PP?

RC
14th June 2005, 07:40 AM
PP was directed by G.Kumar. A pickpocket from Bangalore becomes a Police Officer by turn of events in Madras and how he gets back his love is the story. I thought this movie was well made (though the plot is unbelievable) but not sure about the BO.

Koodu chinna koodu or paalu sombu paalu( I dont remember the starting lines - SP posts this song in PP) is a good number.
There is another song where Satyaraj and Silk investigate drug dealers. - FM sonna manja kuruvi manja kuruvi konja paakuthadi

Song: vaa vaa vaLarmadhiye
Film: vanangamudi
Singer : MLVasanthakumari
Lyrics: Thanjai Ramayyadas
Music: GRamanathan

Often you regret not listening to a song for all the years it existed. Today's pick is one such song. GR , master of mixing classical and light music in right proportions, came out with excellent songs in vanangamudi.
'mohana punnagai', 'omkaaramai viLangum','raaja yogame' etc are some of the hit songs from VM.
Each one is pick worthy.

I remember watching vanangamudi long time ago on DD. A young looking sivaji was paired with a sweet and chubby savithri. I think todays pick is picturised on Rajasulochana.
I also think PS sang all the songs for Savithri. MLV,jikki sang the remaining songs

Pick #125

http://tfmpage.com/stream/songs/ethan_ntv.rm

Song: ethanai manidhargaL ulagathile
Film: needhikku thalai vanangu
Singer : PJayachandran
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan?
Music: MSViswanathan

I think this is one of the 2 JC songs for a MGR film.(Other being 'amudha thamizhil' from madhuraiyai meeta sundhara pandian). Jayachandran IMO is the most underused singer in TFM. Many of KJY songs could have gone to him(not that KJY versions are bad).

NTV had MGR, Latha ,Rojaramani, SVaralakshmi etc and its remake of a hindi film(Titleeludes me). Story is about a rich, mom-pampered biker who blinds someone in an accident. MGR's parents persuade someone else to take the blame. Feeling guilty for his actions MGR comes in search of the blind person. What he does and how he does fills the remaining part of the film.
'indha pachai kiLikoru', 'kanavugaLe aayiram' are the other hit songs from NTV.

Manisekaran
16th June 2005, 11:51 AM
Vaa Kalaaba Mayile is from Kathavarayan- a film where MGR consented to act, and later gave up, with Sivagi Ganesan taking the role.

Other songs in Vangangamudi are:

1. Malaiye Un Nilai Neeyum Paareer- Seergazhi Govindarajan. One of the rare songs by SG for Sivaji

2. Eh Gumthala Gumma - Jikki picturised on Helen

3. Aatchiyin Thimiraale- Seergazhi Govindarajan

4. Eerainthu Mathame- TMS

G Ramanathan brings out the talents of TMS. In once song he makes him sing with very high pitch- Omkarmaai Vilangum Natham. In another song TMS is made to sing in a very low pitch- Mohana Punnagai Seithidum Nilave.

When I met PB Seenivas at the Woodland Drive Inn, Chennai, he told me that his favourite song sung by P Suseela is Ennai Pol Pennallavo. According to PBS, in this song G Ramanathan brought out the entire talent out of her. G Ramanathan always gets the best from singers assigned to sing under him. There are many of such stories under G Ramanathan's composition.

When I met AM Raja in his house in Chinniah Pillai Street in 1984, he mentioned a few songs that he sang under GRamanathan, and did not fail to remind me of "Vaazhvinile Vaazvinile Innaal Ini Varumaa." GR used AMR in the right pitch that he could sing.

I remember seeing this movie in PILOT talkies in Raypet area when I went to India for the first time in 1977. The film did not do well at the box office, but shall always be remembered for the songs and great music. As there was no bus service after the last show I had to walk back to Sarangapani Stree, T Nagar. I was prepared to do that. The film was worth walking more than 4 miles. No regrets.

Ramki,

Thanks for highlighting this song. Not only it is a rare song, it is also a beautifully crafted song. Both singers get equal share of the lyrics, and they also alternate very often, without one having to wait for the other to complete the whole pallavi or whole/half a charanam. That much more work for the lyricist, to make the line-bits fit the gender. Also, the absolutely soothing instrumentation is not to be overlooked.

Nitya, u think like me. One of my top 20 favorite albums, more or less 3 songs of Ilamai Kolam (barring Sridevi En, i really don't enjoy most of IR' pure classical songs, except for some super extraordinary ones like Naan Oru Ponnoviyum Kanden, Neelakuyile Unnodu Naan, Mayilaadum Thoppil, Poo Malarnthida) typified the "enigma" of IR and to what levels IR alone took it in the golden era of music all over the world. I would say the magic of 70s all can be experienced in those rare IR' songs played in radio ceylon in the late 70s, especially that of Ilamai Kolam, all songs of which was aired as if they had to do it ceaselessly.

IR brought the 70s music scene with a dramatic close to an ingenious close and Ilamai Kolam reflects the many enigmatic dimensions in his music, and that is music' own tribute to itself.

Song: selvame ore mugam
Film: amarakaaviyam
Singer: TMS
Lyrics: kaNNadasan
Music: MSViswanathan

Another Amitabh-Rakhee original and another bad, very bad remake. Not that the original 'Muqaddar ka sikandar' was a masterpiece but the presence of Rekha, amitabh, vinodh khanna etc made it watchable. Heavily bloated sivaji carrying 60+ kg belly was no match to the suave and charismatic amitabh. The presence of young stalwarts like Madhavi made sivaji look even older. Why such a great actor wasted his talents by taking these roles will always remain a mystery.
Original had music by Kalyanji-anandji . 'oh saathire' (The original of todays pick) is one of my top 10 Kishore kumar favorites.
MSV came up with a equally powerful version and TMS sings it with his own elan. This was the time when other singers were chosen to playback for sivaji. With this song TMS proves again that he will always be the apt voice for nadigar thilagam. There is a weak version of the same song sung by SPShaija.

This song along with the Shailaja's song used to be played too often when it was released Tamil new year 1981. Raja Parvai released at the same time had to take a back seat. Being an Ardent IR fan never enjoyed this song then, also after seeing the song on Oliyum Oliyum. However after few years I took a liking for the song including Shailaja's version.

Also, 1981 summer was the worst I felt as an IR fan, what with Kal Thoon, Palaivana Chaoli and 5 more movies released on May 1st 1981 (all were declared bos office winners/commission earners) took chunck of the air time leaving little for Raja Parvai and KAzhugu to fight for their recognition.

Thanks once again for a lovely song. My humble opionion is the song should have gone to SPB who would have created a magic...

FM keezhvaanam sivakkum is a much much better film than amarakaviyam. Sivaji played his age and was superbly matched in performace by Saritha.

Song: paarthu koNdirundhaale
Film: chittoor rani padmini
Singer: Seergazhi Govindarajan
Lyrics: ?
Music: GRamanathan

When you think you have listened to almost all the tfmgems, you come across a masterpiece like todays pick and restart your search all again.
Sirgazhi has sung very few songs for Sivaji and i feel this is his best.
The song just took my breath away..He sings the swaras nonstop , barely taking a breath for almost 68 seconds(Listen to the tail end of the song). I personally feel this song deserve much more appreciation that it has now(not many are aware of its existence).

I think CRP had Sivaji and Padmini(or is it vaijayanthi?). I believe it was not a hit and the songs were soon forgotten.

This is a lenghty song(just over 7 minutes long). Somehow the file i have starts with 'vaarthaiyil viLangaadhu'. Im not sure if this is the start of the song.

Thanks for one more find. Godo to hear SG's ganeer voice.

yes Andhi Mazhai was played often, but more like later part of May/June. Madhura geetham (the 4:15 to 5:30 vividh bharathi program) used to play 'Azhaghe Azhagu' almost every day after June/July)

But being a person, who thought no other song other than that of IR deserve air -time , the new songs of other MDS playing often was hard digest then when I was a boy with litle maturity

Anyway thanks for your excellent selections

Song: sangeetham en dhegam
Film: Bala Nagamma
Singer: Vani Jairam
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan
Music: iLaiyaraja

A brilliant composition by IR based on chitrambhari raagam(detail from raaga based songs thread). This is the only film song listed under this raaga.

VaniJairam displays again her mastery over classical based songs. She sings the difficult sandhams in the charanam with ease.

Anatomy of Pleasure

What a bravura performance! Makes one think up phrases like "goose-flesh inducing," "delicious drowning" "force of nature" and "super dhool kilappal" - and still the essence, the pace, the clarity and the purity of the composition and voice - dodge such pithy punches.

In an interview published in The Economic Times (February 3, 2005) VJ says this: "I am a real nut for hard work. That is how I have earned a good reputation in my line." The hard work in a song like the one featured today might just be to make it all look so easy. ...As in the taan that follows "Aagaya Gangaikkum Theeradha Dhagam..." and returns to the first syllable of the opening word seamlessly. The gentle sigh in "perumoochchu vaangum" and the rhetoric of sympathy within "adhu engu thoongum?" and the repetition of "Sangeetham" - short, tall, grande - these are all moments of love's labour.

IR , when he sets himself up for a challenge like this, invariably peaks. The composition captures a royal hall (or a temple courtyard) congregation at dusk (jaathi mallippoo pole andhi maalai pooththaval) and the song washes over like a quick wave of starlit sky. The rhythmic and melodic patterns merge with grace, like two palms pressed in greeting, and the recital begins. The heat of excitement, the descending hush...It is all there in the interludes, you just have to come a bit closer to the song...

Body Music. Body of Music. An Out of Body experience.

Sangeetham... Nam Yogamandro?

Hi, am not sure about the Mal original of Oonjalaadum uravugal. But am sure about OU's music director "dangu takku" Chakravarthi. OU was shot in Telugu as well Tamil. Suresh and Sridurga (Kannada Malaasree's name in Tamil) also acted in the movie, as youth pair. There is a great Solo by PS accopanied by (Maragadha) VeeNai, for Srividya (VeeNai enadhu kuzhandhai.. madi meedhu naan vaiththu thalaattuvEn...). Veru nice song.

Madhu yes its a remake of kaathrathe kiLikoodu. It had jaishankar, srividhya, suresh and sridurga. The film was very good and jaishankar's acting was a treat to watch. I think soman did this role in Malayalam. If i remember right, Revathi played the role of sridurga.

Music: GKVenkatesh

First my apologies for the poor audio quality. This was the best i could do with the file i had.

This is a beautiful annan-thangai song by GKV. This song reminds me 'poovile medai naan podavaa', not that there are any similarities between these two other than the singers, but the melody and the lyrics gives the same feel.
'peNNin vaazhkai' had Sudhakar, sumathi, Rathi agnihotri, aruna etc. This song is picturized on sudhakar and sumathi. I think this is a telugu remake and the original was directed by vijayanirmala.
Another good song from PV is 'maasi maasam muhurtha neram' (PS,JC).

Song: Lakshmi vandhaaL
Film: Panam peNN paasam
Singers: SPB, SPShailaja
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan?
Music: Shankar Ganesh

"maana ho thum" (KJY), one of very few original songs of BappiLahri is a source of inspiration to 2 songs 'madhanotsavam'(sadhurangam-VK) and todays pick.
While madhanotsavam was a fairly hit song, lakshmi vandhaal did not get many rasigars.
'Panam peNN paasam' was a fairly engrossing film with Muthuraman, saritha, vadivukarasi and vijayababu. I think with this film vadivukarasi started doing mother roles. Muthuraman played a character with shades of grey and saritha played his rebellious daughter. Vadivukarasi played Muthurams paralyzed wife.
'kalaimaamaniye'(VJ,JC) is another good song from PPP.

Ramki, PPP was fairly a hit movie, I think. May not be a super-hit. MR and Saritha did extremely well.

Lakshmi vandhal was a good well suited song for stage singing. Esp, SPS's himming part. SPS did well but one could see a over-do from SPB's side ??

I think Vadivukkarasi started her mother role in YeNi padigaL itself, which came much before this.

Madhu: UPA by Javar was tried with CVRajendran team with Sivaji, Jayalalitha (wife character) and Usha Nandini (Anandhi). But this also did not hit the screen.

Song: maanthaLire mayakamenne
Film: Devathai
Singer: SJanaki
Lyrics: kaNNadasan?
Music: Shyam

Devathai, a supposedly comeback film of veteran actress Jayanthi, had 2 beautiful solos by SJanaki.
The popular 'Galeer galeer' and todays pick.
'maanthaLire' , little bit inspired from 'aajare' (madhumathi) starts like 'annakiLi' song(the humming part) and the interludes have salilda's touch . So does most of shyams songs anyway.
Devathai had Jayanthi, sivakumar, Lavanya, jaiganesh . I remember watching this film few years ago on DD . A 2.30 hrs film was heavily censored to last less than 1.30 hrs. The film had a malayalam feel throughout..slow moving, explicit(in 1970s standards) and a tragic ending.
I think todays pick is picturised on Layanya
