Mohanlal’s Rasathantram which celebrated its 100th day on July 15 has become the biggest box office hit in the history of Malayalam cinema.
Moviebuzz puts together a behind –the-scene story on how the film was conceived, marketed and rode on Mohanlal’s family image.

The credit for bringing Mohanlal and Sathyan Anthikkad together goes to Antony Perumbavoor,
who produced Rasathantram. It was Antony who succeeded in what directors like Priyadarshan, Producer ‘Swargachitra’Appachan, writer-actor Sreenivasan all failed.
Today Antony says: “Njan aarum alla, Athu Deivanishchayam (I am nobody, it’s all God’s will).

Mohanlal and Sathyan has done nearly 27 films during 80’s and early 90’s. Their last film was in 1994 after which they split. If you ask Mohanlal why they split he will tell you- “Chumma (simply) and Sathyan’s answer is “Onnum Illa” (Nothing really!). For 12 years they went their separate ways before they came together with another blockbuster Rasathantram.

Rasathantram has beaten all existing records in 27 stations and has become the highest grosser in Kerala. This film is expected to gross an awesome Rs 21 Crore from theatricals worldwide which means a distributors share (after deduction of entertainment tax, theatre rentals, show tax etc) will be between Rs 10 to 11 Crore. Remember that the film was made for Rs 2.87 Crore including print and publicity!

Sathyan had written a script for the first time in his life as all his earlier films had script by Sreenivasan or Lohithadas. Says Sathyan: “I am learning something new everyday. What makes me tick is the fact that I am willing to learn new things even after being in the industry for 24 years”. He shrugs his shoulders and says: “I am glad that the film is a blockbuster”.

What worked for the film was the chemistry between Sathyan and Mohanlal. Sathyan has given a rebirth to Mohanlal as he could get back the family audience which he had lost when he did larger-than-life roles. Adds Sathyan: “Mohanlal is the quintessential common man for Malayalees worldwide. Says Antony who also convinced Meera Jasmine to act opposite Mohanlal (she was avoiding the superstars): “Ladies loved the chemistry between Mohanlal and Meera especially the Attinkara… song”.

Added Antony: “Innocent chettan’s comedy with Meera, Mammookoya and Lal sir was another highlight of the film. Gopi sir was apt as the father and the chemistry between the father and son was etched out beautifully by Sathyan sir. Some of the beautiful locations of Kerala were picturised well by cameraman Azhagappan”.

The aggressive marketing of the film by Alex George of Central pictures the oldest distribution concern in Kerala also went a long way in making the film a hit. George released the film in 50 centres and was also able to create an aura around the film as a family entertainer. Rasathantram’s historic run at the box-office has assured that Mohanlal is once again crowned as the Emperor of Malayalam cinema.

Review
Bhargava Charitham Moonam Khandam

By Moviebuzz

Mammootty’s Sreenivasan written Bhargava Charitham Moonam Khandam (BCMK) promised to be different but 30 minutes into the film, it all comes crashing down. The title itself is a misnomer as only Sreenivasan knows what it means? All the vital elements of a good comedy film are unfortunately missing and the script is totally confusing.
“BCMK” is supposed to be a black comedy which means- a serious subject dealt in a humourous manner. But the film which starts off as a comedy peters out into a typical commercial masala with our hero beating the daylights out of the bad guy in the climax. Alas, there is nothing new for the audience.

The plot is inspired from Harrold Ramis directed classic black comedy Analyze This (1999) with Robert De Niro playing a mafia don who due to frequent bouts of anxiety attacks gets treated by a famous psychiatrist enacted by the great comedy actor Billy Crystal. In our ‘Mallu’ version, Sreenivasan’s script simply lacks the heart, characterisation and humour of the original.

‘Current’ Bhargavan (Mammootty) is a dreaded underworld don of Kochi who wears designer leather jackets, boots and even has a hat and is accompanied by long haired funny looking goons (Johnny & Mohanraj) who speaks volumes of their master’s dare devilry. But our poor don suffers from anxiety attacks and just cannot lift the gun nor beat up anyone! Bhargavan decides to help himself by seeking psychiatric help from Dr Santharam (Sreenivasan) a megalomaniac who has framed pictures of him shaking hands with George Bush in his clinic!

However the shrink is not willing to help as he is sacred of Bhargavan and also thinks that the don is a ruthless, uneducated uncouth and tries to escape form his clutches which leads to lot of troubles and a merry-go-round. Meanwhile Bharagavan who has lot of enemies are after his blood including the kingpin of all nefarious activities (Sai Kumar).

The film would have been a rocking entertainer if the director and the scriptwriter had stuck to the original. Why did they have two ladies Padmapriya and Nikhita who have nothing to do in the script? Sreenivasan has more number of scenes than Mammootty and he looks old and haggard and his expressions are predictable and stale. The only scene in which he scores and brings laughter is when he becomes the human cannon ball in a circus troupe. Mammootty looks disinterested in the proceedings. On the plus side, Manoj Pillai’s camera has beautifully etched out Athirapally locales.

Verdict: Disappointing

`Bharagava..` bombs!

By Moviebuzz | Tuesday, 29 August , 2006, 10:58

Mammootty’s Onam release Bhargava Charitham Moonam Khandam has bombed miserably at the Kerala box-office! The talk on the movie was so bad that by evening show of the opening day, the film started sliding!
It is turning out to be Mammootty’s biggest flop in recent times. On Day two, when Kamal Hassan’s Vetaydu Vilayadu was released to 100 percent at Kavitha, Ernakulam, at Saritha Bhargava.. collections dropped drastically.

And by Sunday, after Mohanlal’s Mahasamudram released, Bhargava.. collapsed. By Monday (Day 5), Kottayam Abhilash reported only 45 percent collections for noon-show and matinee!

‘Current’ Bhargavan has short circuited Mammootty’s impressive track record at the Kerala box-office as it is turning out to be a bigger flop than his earlier Prajapathy. Even Mammootty fans are finding it hard to digest Bharagava….

Sreenivasan will have to take the blame for this fiasco as he had no business to make a ‘black comedy’, based on a Hollywood flick Analyse Thiswhich will never work with Malayalee audience.

[tscii:c0af78f993]Mahasamudram - Time-pass Mohanlal masala for Onam sadya

... mass formula- a larger-than-life do gooder, punch line dialogues, some adipoli songs plus at least four kidilan fight scenes! The magic formula works once again in Mahsamudram a film strictly for his fans ...

... directed by Dr S.Janardhanan, a television serial maker has nothing new to offer... :angry2:

...Still, the film is a watchable as it is racy and the plot mixture of high seas romance and action along with an adrenaline pumping football match...

...But sadly Mohanlal’s first attempt in 26 years to be a fisherman is no patch on other sea faring movies like the classic Chemeen or Mammootty’s brilliant Amaram...

...Shaji’s camera especially the football scene shots of Mohanlal’s introduction scene and the way he heads a goal are fantastic...

… As usual there is one good melody tuned by M.Jayachandran Kando Kando… Kadal Kandittu… sung by Venugopal and Chitra being the pick of the lot...

...There is absolutely no chemistry between Mohanlal and Laila, as she looks fragile and timid with hardly anything to do...
:sigh2:

...Mohanlal does his usual superman act and steers this uneven film on his broad shoulders to the winning post... :victory:

Movie Review

Mahasamudram - A slick family entertainer

IndiaGlitz [Monday, August 28, 2006]

The recent Malluwood cinema has been dominated by the new faces especially behind the camera.

These young directors and cinematographers who come up with some refreshing menus are given a welcome treat by the film buffs. Mohanlal himself has reaped the benefits of young talents in the recent successes that he had in the box office. And after the mega success of Keerthichakra here he is again the winner with the new flick offered for Onam.

Mahasamudram - continuing his super hit statistics to a continuous six.

By the way the film is packaged, the director Dr .S.Janaradhanan gets an around perfect debut film to land on to commercial boom. The screenplay by the director himself is interlocked with crisp dialogues, as good paced narration, camera angles and lighting match the mood of the film demands and the background score by Kannan fits aptly to the entire proceedings. There aren’t much dull moments in the film.

Best of all, the film is not gory stale her centric tale, even though the story has all the elements to make it such. The director, who is known for his classy television and on stage ventures, restrains himself by allowing the film to deviate into the festive commercial plot.

The story is all about Ishaq, a young fisherman who is the pet of every one of kadalkkara and the feud and fights that they have in everything starting even from football with a neighboring fisherman hamlet, Mattakkara. Ishaq has a favorite buddy in the local priest of the church who is involved in the every local issues of the village and is one of the few persons in whom Ishaq confides. Ishaq's father Velankanni becomes insane after the loss of his wife. Ishaq has a tragic past in which that falls in love with Devi. They get married at sea and spend their first night at sea even after much resistance from Devi's relatives who belongs to Mattakkara. But their happiness is short lived as Devi is arrested and jailed for murder that Devi committed on the same night, inorder to save Ishaq from his brother Chandran's knife'. Ishaq, who was denied the joy of spending even a day with his wife is always looking forward for the days of his union with his wife who had been to jail for the last six years.

Ishaq was essentially a person who is good at heart, but the problems in his life drive him to support an evil although he appears an affable person on the outside. And for in exchange of doing an evil Ishaq has his wife being released on parole. This changes his whole world and brings joy to his life, but at times falls prey to the call from his conscience for the wrong doing.

The story deals with the various problems and troubles in Ishaq's life and how they change him. The highlights of the film includes the interval punch, underwater sequences, fights in the inner sea and the climax football sequences which creates large spaces for the fans to thrill and chill.

Mohanlal is in usual strengths even though he playing the no. 10 jersey striker of the Beach football team brings in chuckles, for his bulky physique. Laila plays Devi while innocent appear as Velankanni, father of Ishaq. Saikumar makes another routine performance as Sebastian george ,the local MLA . The film also fills the frames with large no of artists which is usual such a film made in the background of sea. The credut cast includes Rehman, M.R.Gopakumar, Krishnaprasad, Jagadheesh, Baburaj, Kalshal Babu and Co.

Adding to the film's plus points are its tempo and duration, and Shaji’s cinematography -- which gives the real earthy look of the shores. There's also an absence of comedians to test our patience, making for a different experience. M. Jayachandran has been able to make some hummable tunes. But despite the rare backdrop of the subject, the movie lacks clarity at times, because Janardhanan has been so hectic to include a plenty of story for his share of two and a half hours.

The execution suffers at times mainly because the debutant director has included commercial ingredients with an eye to please everyone on the box office. And we can't complaint as that is the most needed catchword you come through when dealing with a flick of popular genre. There are many holes in the script. Thankfully, the director has taken the support from experienced technicians to realize his dramatic endeavor, who have done their best to lift the film. On the whole, a commendable effort, considering it was completed with great difficulty.

HERE ARE MY RATINGS!!!

1) CLASSMATES - 8/10
2) MAHASAMUDHRAM - 5/10
3) BHARGAVACHARITHAM MOONAM GHANTAM - 3/10

Classmates is surely the best film in terms of quality.Me,a Mohanlal fan had to be really disappointed seeing Mahasamudhram.Nowhere in the leagues of Mohanlal's previous hits. Its the failure of BCMG and free flow performance of Mohanlal that made MS a success. As or Janardhanan...U HAVE NO FUTURE IN MALAYALAM FILM INDUSTRY..GO BACK TO UR SERIAL WORLD.

Classmates is superb.Every person would identify the characters in the film.Good performances by all and the best by the director Lal jose and the new scriptwriter

BCMC....Sorry Mammu....THE LESS SAID THE BETTER

[tscii:fe1ba79604]MAHASAMUDRAM VAMBAN SUPERHIT
Movie Review : Mahasamudram

Producer: Suresh Kumar
Director: Dr. S. Janardhanan
Cast: Mohanlal, Laila,Innocent, Jagathy Sreekumar, Rajan P. Dev, Siddique, Biju Menon, Riza Bava, Subeer, Sai Kumar, Rahman, Indrans, Niyas, M.R. Gopakumar, Jagdish, Yethu Krishnan, Anil Murali, T.P. Madhavan, Krishna Prasad, Ram Mohan
Music: M Jayachandran

Mass formula is all it takes to make Mohanlal’s films click at the box-office. Get him a larger-than-life do-gooder role along with racy songs, punch line dialogues and thrilling fight sequences, and people will surely love him. This formula has worked in ‘Mahsamudram’ too. There is nothing new in the film and director Dr S.Janardhanan has used many sequences of other films yet Mohanlal has made it enjoyable because it has all the elements he is well versed in.

Isahak (Mohanlal) is a fisherman with a good heart. He looks after an old-age home run by a priest (Jagathy Sreekumar) and his mentally challenged father Velankani (Innocent) is also an inmate. He is also a star football player for ‘Beach Eleven’ club of Puthenkara and the rival club of the team is ‘Seven Star’ from Mattukara, which is controlled by rowdies. He falls in love with Devi (Laila) of Mattukara. So, her brother (Riza Bava) is all out to take revenge.

They tie the knot in the sea and look forward to their first night in the sea. At this juncture, Devi’s brother is set to set them afire. This makes Devi to kill her brother and she is thus sent to jail. Isahak’s world comes crumbling down. In the meantime, rowdies kidnap Velankani. Their demand is that Isahak not play for a crucial match in a tournament. Now, Devi is out on parole. The rest of the film is on how Isahak is caught between his love for Devi and duty towards his father and team. It has a palpitating climax.

Mohanlal has carried the load all by himself in the film. He has done his job well as usual but Laila looks fragile and timid. Her chemistry with Mohanlal is very bad. Supporting cast like Innocent, Rahman, Jagadheesh, Niyas, Sai Kumar, Krishna Prasad, Indrans and others are fine. Shaji’s camera work is good and his touch in a particular scene where Mohanlal heads a goal is fantastic. M.Jayachandran’s music is also fine.

On the whole, ‘Mahasamudram’ would be good time pass this Onam. It has nothing new, yet Mohanlal fans will love it.

Mohanlal on a hot streak
IndiaGlitz [Friday, September 01, 2006]

Mohanlal has completed a double hat-trick thanks to the back-to-back hits in Thanmatra, Rasathanthram, Vadakkumnaathan, Keerthi Chakra and now Mahasamudram.

Mohanlal has bounced back with vigor to taste back-to-back hits. Also some of his movies lined-up for release are also expected to do well at the box-office.

His Paradesi, Akasha Gopuram, Alibhai and Chota, all have different themes and are expected that they wont do any wrong at the box-office.

In contrast, Mammootty tasted a string of hits until Prajapathi, which stopped his success run.

This Onam certainly belongs to Mohanlal who has hits in Keerthi Chakra and Mahasamudram.

Many actors find hard to make a break in spite trying really hard but it would be hard to stop Mohanlal from winning. His success ran is incredible with two hat trick hits in a row. To be precise, his last six releases namely ‘Thanmatra’, ‘Rasathanthram’, ‘Vadakkumnaathan’, ‘Keerthi Chakra’ and now ‘Mahasamudram’ are all hits.
The superstar is likely to continue his winning ways, as his forthcoming films are looking good. His films ‘Paradesi’, ‘Akasha Gopuram’, ‘Alibhai’ and ‘Chota Mumbai’, which have different themes, are also expected to do well at the box-office.
This Onam belongs to Mohanlal, as his films ‘Keerthi Chakra’ and ‘Mahasamudram’ have received good response at the box-office. However, his counterpart Mammootty is going through a dry patch after having a great outing last year.
