In the movie, Azhagiya Kanne, which I have only seen once in video in the 80's, I remember very well a part where Chaaruhasan will go back to the grave to dig up to see if Sumalatha's body is still there. The BGM that comes with this scene is if I remember well, one of the best horror music given by IR, other than the one he gave for Sivappu Rojakkal at the end when Kamal pulls out a cross from the grave.

If anyone has video or DVD of this movie and if they can upload the BGM part, it would be fantastic gift for all IR fans....

Thanks again Usha for pointing to 'Tambhi Pondati' song. Haven't heard it before. A very nice song. While I was looking up this song, also saw that Uma Ramanan has two solos in this film. Listen to both of them. Both of them are good. Very fascinated with the Mayamalavagowla based 'Un Ennam Enge'. Haven't heard this song earlier either.

Azhagiya Kannae - Sumalatha, Sarath babu and Chaaruhasan is Mahendran's failed dabble with Nenjam Marappadhillai genre.
Sumalatha played the role of a classical dancer and Sarath that of a sirpi.
I remember some awesome spooky BGMs and suprise at seeing charuhassan playing villain role.

Usha madam,
A nice song, one of my long time favourites.
Dir. Sridhar mentioned that while explaining the song situation to Raja, he wanted kind of song from Jane Fonda videos on aerobics. Raja came up with this. Jane Fonda was/is a famous fitness guru/aerobics trainer. See here for write up on her exercise videos:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Fonda

Many of her famous videos are on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJNmkDVzMAw

Raja also came up with a song for similar situation in Pattupoo poo for Veera (not in the movie) which is a good Chalanattai.

"Alaigale vaa" is a great ballad by IR, with excellent chorus and string arrangements. If he can do a song like this, there is no reason why he can't do a powerful musical like Sweeny Todd... if only the right people employed him...

Hi Usha,

Malli Malli - A very nice song. A very typical Raja melody. Hearing it for the first time.

The spelling of Malli Malli is same as Malli Malli as in 'Malli Malli Idi Raani Vela' from Rakshasudu that for a second I though you pointing to that song :) Lovely song that too.

Yes i have it. such a wonderful but relatively unknown 3 albums every serious raaja fan should posses. Listen to "alaigale vaa from 2:58 to 4:39... the longest interlude i ever heard in raaja's music (please correct me if i am wrong) the song itself is unconventional having only one interlude. Compare to the song "siricha kolli malai kuyilu" in the same collection you will realize his capability of sticking to the convention and make you listen to the this song zillion times and compose something out of the box like "alaigale vaa"..... (the kind of song which demands your attention span)

The prelude itself indicates 2 popular songs. one i identified "nilave nee varavendum" (It shows his resolve to prove that none of his compositions is an empty effort)

He will remain as the GOD of innovation forever.....

I think raagas understands raagas but not Tamil :) I am sure he would have got the gist of what you are saying. In case you didn't get it raagas, Usha is saying that though she knows that it is a Tyagraja krithi she wants others to contribute as well. I am sure she is happy seeing you post on that.

I was thinking why pick a krithi as IR sotd? the version by SJ/KJY has an interesting prelude. I like the way IR embellishes such classics fittingly, matching the brilliance of the original composer (even if you take "thulasidala" from HTNI or "alaipayudhe" form ethanai konam). The other songs by IR in the album are great, esp. "enthan kai kuttaiyai"

delayed response:

I am totally smitten by this composition. I know that 99% IR fans will find it odd if i say that i usually do not like literally every Janaki-IR combination. Yes, there are some good songs, but somehow, i have some reservations about Janaki's voice, with all due respects to her talent. Yet, there are many IR numbers in which Janaki shines. This song is one of them. Now, what elements in his song actually demanded my love for it?
1. Rarely i see a serious song in Chalanaata raagam.
2. Janaki hits 10/10.
3. String section - IR, for the nth time, proves his command over the string section. Wonderfully composed pieces. Interludes rock bigtime. But ilaiyaraaja doesnt leave you there. Watch the way the violins swirl around after the 2 charanams are done, they just cascade to a mighty finish. Now, thats his genius.
4. After i heard this song, it sounded very familiar to me, and i was sure that there is a telugu counterpart to this song. It was hovering in my mind and i was unable to get it. After 4hours, it sudden struck to me that this song is actually an improvisation from a short song - "Nee Gaanam" from Telugu film "Sitara". I could find similarity and then i realized that Nee Gaanam is also in chala naata (new discovery).

Corollary: It happens many times, that i cannot recognize the raaga of a song and later, on some other occassion, i recognize the raaga of another song and suddenly it dawns on me that they are parallels, yet treated differently.

Bottomline - Ilaiyaraaja is an unparalleled genius. Hence Proved.

Nice analysis raagas. I know that many people have some reservation about Janaki's voice but once you get used to it you can find out what sort of genius she is.

Usha, I am sure Rajasaranam would be happy with your pick of the Rajasthan song. He has been talking about how Raja had used various styles in this movie and had uploaded the songs on his site.

This song is very nice. What is interesting is the way the bit Hindi song comes in. There is no trace of any South Indian touch in that. When I hear stuff like this it makes me feel that Raja was not very interested in scoring for Hindi movies else he could have easily scored songs with the Hindi film music touch.

At the next opportunity, i would like to discuss Kovil Pura song - Amuthe Thamizhe and the other Rasikaranjani " Nila Kuyile".. In Magudi or mogamul .. I did not even know about this Nila Kuyile song until very recently..

Mind blowing. Whenever i listen to Amudhe Thamizhe, i get goose bumps during the lines "... Koon mezhugai urugum . ..athil ulagam marunthu pokum..". I read somewhere that IR himself considers this one of his personal favorites and expected a National award for this song but did not get it.

Usha,

Once again thanks for pointing to a song which I haven't heard earlier. I am sure this would have been dismissed earlier as a IR synth driven song but there is lot of joy in this song, if you don't worry too much about the sound but instead concentrate on the ideas. The energy with which SPB sings and the pallavi lyrics are great fun. Raja is mixing multiple genres here, as always. A folkish number with synth support. Listen to the bass in the first interlude. Superb.

A very nice song. Typical Raja melody of the 80s. Haven't heard this song. The female voice is definitely not Janaki but I am not too sure if it is Chitra. There is not as much modulation as Chitra would do. I may be wrong though.

Thanks for pointing to the Ponmegalai song thumburu. A lovely Naatai it is and what a rhythm, what a rhythm. The initial portion uses silence very well to get a lovely pattern. Hi Usha,

A lovely pick. What a rhythm!! This song can easily go into the thread about Raja's rhythms. The initial guitar and the sax like instrument that enters, play totally different patterns in the prelude giving an exciting opening to the song. What a rhythmic pattern he has devised for this song. It is very clear that all the drummers and the musicians are enjoying themselves. This is something you miss in the loop based rhythms of today. The melody is great as well.

"Anandhakkummi" was an IR home production (perhaps the only one made by his own label as others were done by pAvalar creations with IR's brother RD Bhaskar as the producer)...

IR chose to go to Bombay to record the songs for this movie (possibly for the first time and later many followed as IR liked the techniques - clarity etc. of the recording).

Excellent songs and fantastic recording for the time period.

'thAmaraikkodi' is my pick too - the second interlude is among IR's top 10:-)

'oru kiLi urugudhu' and 'O veNNilAvE' were more poplular, though.

Thanks for posting the song. Thanks AE for the interesting info!

All the songs in this album are great. I chose "Oh vennilave" cos imo it is the most "exotic" song in the album (and also less known). It has everything I love and hate about IR songs - overuse of folkish percussions and brilliant WCM style sections. These parts are juxtaposed in this song, and not layered over each other. I just love the "naalai, indha velai" part - great melody with lovely arpeggios and chorus arrangements. Both interludes are great. The first one starts with a pure folkish bit (haven't we hear it in 100s of IR song!) followed by a nice hindustani cum baroque style portion followed by a nice strings bit in romantic style, all blending smoothly. Second interlude also has three distinct sections of beautiful chorus, folkish beats and strings. Where is that unbridled IR today?

One really nice thing about Anandhakkummi is Raja's choice of SPB-SJ for most songs. This choice was somewhat different from what he did for pAvalar creations movies - where SPB-SJ were used sparingly.

They were at their peak and delivered phenomenal output!

Thanks for posting rare good songs. A small doubt. Can you please clarify? At any point is this song/music resembles you, 'Vidiya vidiya nadanam' from Idhayathai Thirudaathey?.

This album supposed to be an underrated one from my perspective. Few more good songs in this album besides this one. i.e. 'Thai pirandhadhu' by Mano (I am not sure), 'En aasai vaazhaikuruthe' by Malaysia and Chitra and 'othu oodhu maama' by Mano & Chitra resembles 'Kammakarai oram' (Mainly Tabla portion) from 'Rasave unna nambi'.

Today pick - Sing swing

Film - Moodumani

Singer - Kalyan

About the song -

Naan solla ondrum illai.....

My Friend Krish's writings is very informative.

~R.V.Krishnan~
SING SWING - MOODUPANI-PUNK/GROOVE-UR CHOICE!
A non-Tamil alternative rock number from the evergreen music album, Moodupani..

I would call it Punk-rock for its lesser use of instruments and freedom expression in the lyrics...Call it Psychedelic rock for its Hallucinating effect!

Punk or Groove or Psychedelic or Glam Rock, it is ultimately Raajaish!

A drum start with I suppose is a 2/4 time signature...Followed by keyboards and digital imitation of human voices! Guitars show up...00:34, Bass guitars show up...

Crooning start of the pallavi! SING SWING TREAT MOVE GROOVE SHAKE WITH ME BABY! Rhythm does'nt quite match with the singing but actually fills up in the miniscule intervals of the singing!!! I dont know how to define this rhythm!! lovely keyboard rhythm....Bass guitars present too...

1st interlude with lovely Distortion guitars with the Whammy Bar usage...Echo effect from the distortion guitars! 01:41, keyboards followed by distortion guitars...An unexpected OBOE piece appears at 01:54!!! Cool Bass effects for the Oboe...

Stanza with lovely flute reply after the "BIB BAB BOB BAB BABY!!

2nd interlude with the Bass softly strumming and sudden acceleration from drums! COOL DISTORTION EFFECTS VIA DISTORTION PEDALS(WAH WAH ) at 03:20...LOVELY MUSIC!! TWO BASS GUITARS PRESENT HERE...ONE OFFERS CONTINUOUS BASS WHILE THE OTHER GUITAR IS CONNECTED TO THE DISTORTION PEDAL....nice keyboard lead follows..
Hallucinating start of 2nd stanza!!

Man,Man...HE has explored every avenue of music!!! Be it Afro-tribe music or Alternative rock, he has left no stone unturned!!!

Even such a complex, offbeat composition is a cakewalk for the Maestro!! IT IS TOO HARD FOR COMMON MEN LIKE US TO PERCEIVE SUCH MUSIC!!! TOO MUCH!! JUST LOOK AT THE RHYTHM PATTERN OF THE SONG...AMAZING & HARD-TO-UNDERSTAND!!

Carnatic experts might find some ragam in this song to prove the Psychedelic rock genre presence in the song!!

THIS IS A SONG FOR THE WORLD AUDIENCE!

pro-Raaja...

One of the landmark songs of Raaja in terms of its guitar works...

This song is on the F#m scale and is in Madhyamavathi raagam in the Carnatic perspective. ..SPB, the emperor of singers!!

The song starts with the divine voice of SPB with the guitar strum...Flute follows along with keyboard....

The pallavi has a brilliant guitar accompaniment for the first line with the guitar .... The magic begins in the second line "EN VAASAL VARAVERKUM.. ." Notice the Bass for that line .....

1st interlude with violin start followed by the short guitar lead and then comes a lovely solo violin....Mind you folks, it is only Isaignani who has used the solo violin on several occasions... .I have never come across any other MD who has created so many solo violin pieces ! Notice the Bass guitar in the background of the solo violin...then we have the violins playing a soothing melody... solid bass and keyboards... . Then at 01:37, an electric guitar and keyboard play together with a response from a flute .... The lude ends with the solid electric guitar strum...

The first charanam has one of my favorite percussions. ..listen to the Bongos when SPB sings Paadhai Muzhudum Kodi Malargal,Paadi Varume .... so sweetly timed.. at 02:01, there is change in rhythm when he sings " UN AADAI HEY MIDHAKINDRA PAALAADAI.." , note the Bass in the background.. .at 02:09, "VEYIL NAALUM SUDUMENA DHEGAM .." again a change in rhythm and prominant guitars.

at 02:42, is one of the finest interludes of Raaja...Pump up the volume in your speakers when you hear this one!! Oh cool stuff!!

This interlude starts with the solo violin...I would say this solo violin is RAAJA PATENT!!
At 02:48, the BASS GUITAR strums along with the solo violin...at 02:53, begins the COOL COOL WAH WAH GUITAR !!...This WAH WAH pedal is connected to the Bass guitar and is stepped using the foot whenever the WAH WAH effect is required...So if you hear, the pedal is constantly stepped up and down...when stepped down, we get the Wah effect, when released it is the normal Bass guitar...

at 02:57, violins and a solo violin join ... 03:14, there is a Bass strum before the flute and also after the flute...Notice the robust Bass support for the flute...

GUITARS'na ippidi irukkanum... .Yappa MD's, ippidi thalaivar madhiri music poda try pannungappa! !!

now listen to the pallavi in the end of the song!! The best guitars are heard when SPB sings, EN VAASAL VARAVERKUM.. ." I can actually hum that guitar piece !! so well defined !!

Coming to the pallavi tabs of this song:

It can be played on F#sus4 scale...

The pallavi could be F#sus4/ F#sus4/ F#m9/ F#m9

the next lines F#sus4 F# A F# / F#sus4 F#sus4 A F#

Hail Maestro!

pro-Raaja...

after multiple listenings, i felt that stuck out as a sore thumb......the singing was very poppish,boneym-ish but who was listening to vocals when bass was splitting our ears  i dont remember this film at all, but i think this song happens in a bar/pub/disco  hence the disco effect, i believe.....

infact, it seems raaja has used this keyboard rythm extensively.....examples on top of my mind - ilamai idho idho and pesa koodaadhu....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aapb-3Z1hVI

Yes. In fact, like i mentioned elsewhere its hard to slot this song under one genre and unlike what i usually say, its very atypical even in Raaja's repertoire.

[tscii:31c55c7e30]Though a very rare pop song like “sing swing” is picked, I would have loved it more than ever if only the less celebrated “paruvakaalangaLin” were chosen. Nevertheless, “sing swing” shows the wild ,western side of Raja for those who try to typecast him as just a folklore MD.. Vintage Raja did display his prowess in rock style guitar usage in songs like “vaadiyamma ponmagaLe” as early as his second film “Palootti VaLartha KiLi” , “Nandhavanathil vandha kuyile”, “sorgam madhuvile” etc. “baby shake it baby” of “KaaLi” is another good example which you have picked[/tscii:31c55c7e30]

Thanks for posting the song.
Its a lovely melody and wonderful to hum. I just cannot decide which version I like better between SJ and SPB. SPB's voice is really sweet and really suits the song. btw SPB has a flair for singing for Mohan, with subtle changes in his tone, a small laugh etc. (you can imagine Mohan giving expressions... hilarious!). SPB voice makes it an instant delight.
Eventually the SJ version edged ahead for me because of the instrumentation. I like the guitar and flute combo in the SJ version better.. the flute almost sounds like one of those plastic pan flutes.. dunno if a pan flute was used or its keyboard or real flute.. but it creates that wistful feel perfectly for this song (kanavodu yengum, indeed!)

Today pick - Keladi pen pavaiyae

Singer - Great SPB

film - Gopura vasalilae

Naan solla onum ilai.

En friend Krish

ELLAM SOLLI IRUKAN.
Pl enjoy his writings.
Its enough to me.
Maestro Ilayaraaja has enlightened us with the various music forms of the world
by using them in his compositions...

Here is one song from Gopura Vaasalile that is typical of the CENTRAL EUROPE
music. It is known as the POLKA DANCE music. This music form predominantly uses
the Accordion as the main instrument though other instruments are also given
equal importance.

Raaja sir identified a music form that exists in Russia and the Central European
countries and composing a lovely song in that style!!

In the pallavi line, "Mogam Konda Podhum Dhaagam Vandha Podhum......Asaiyodu
Alli Serka vendum", just listen to the Saxophone completely filling up SPB's
background! Polka!

In fact, a few months ago, I happened to hear a newly released Christian
devotional song where such similar Polka style Saxophones and Accordions were
used...Hearing this, I was reminded of Thalaivar's Keladi En Paavaiye....I
probed into Tamil devotional songs that released in the 1980's and early 90's in
my friend's place whose dad possessed many such old devotional albums...I found
that in the 80's and early 90's, Tamil devotional songs were mainly a mixture of
Carnatic and Western Classical and I did not find such specialised Polka music
in any of the well known devotional albums...

Somehow I concluded that Raaja sir only popularised this kinda Polka music
because this film released in the early 90's and before this song,I don't think
there is any noteworthy Polka style Tamil song, be it a film song or a private
album!! Though Raaja sir did Marugo Marugo from Vetri Vizha in a similar
fashion, it is not Polka music....

The accordions in the interludes of KELADI EN PAAVAIYE completely reveal the
Polka style of music..

SPB the great, with some smiles and giggles in his singing!!

The last two lines of the charanam i.e. the lines "En Sondhame En Sorgame
Inaindhidamma,Karaindhidu Kalandhidu..." has a Polka style accompaniment of the
guitar....

Raaja sir is the KING OF BASS,so, as usual this song has extremely good Bass
works!

Here is an example of Polka music by Grazer Spatzen in the below Youtube link...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1GprshBM24&feature=related

You will realise that Maestro has composed Keladi En Paavaiye on par with the
Russian & Central European Polka music composers(rather, much better than
them!!)

pro-Raaja...

Usha, "hello hello" is my pick too from a great album "innisai mazhai" for the most undeserving movie . Boisterous trumphet with beats to match and guitar riffs and of the same variety as "rojapoo aadivandhadhu" of "Agni Nakshathram". The song is sung by Mithali of "yamunai aatrile" fame. I can nitpick the outlandish, cheesy lyrics as a put off

'Kanvodu Yengum' - A lovely melody. Never heard this song before. Excellent instrumentation, very minimal but very effective. Love the guitar bits in this song. The way the guitar follows in the beginning of the charanam and the flute peeping once in a while is a delight.

Usha,

Aaaah. You have brought back some good memories. 'Alli Billi' is a lovely song and the best song of this album. Vamsi - Raja combination is something that needs to be written about and since I have some time in my hands, I will write about this combination :)

Vami's peak as a film maker coincided with Raja's musical peak and together they made wonderful music. Vamsi had an experimental bent of mind and made eclectic movies. There would be a suspense movie, a comedy movie, a social drama and a detective movie. How many of his experiments succeeded is a different question but what cannot be denied is that these experiments gave food for the master's thoughts. He seemed to have enjoyed his association with Vamsi and has come up with a great variety in his scores. He was able to take on some old songs like 'Telisindile' and redo them in 'Sree Kanaka Mahalakshmi Dance Troup' or provide line-by-line alternate melody for a classic like 'Prema Yatralaku'. On the other hand he could remake his 'Chinna Mani Kuyile' into a comic song. Together Vamsi and Raja covered a gamut of emotions starting from comedy and remix on one end to classical stuff on the other and many in between. There were some nice scores for films like 'Ladies Tailor', 'Chettukinda Pleader', 'April 1 Vidudala', 'Kokila', 'Sree Kanaka Mahalakshmi Dance Troup', 'Detective Narada' and outstanding scores for movies like 'Sitara', 'Maharishi', 'Alapana' and 'Anveshana'. Including Tamil, there were very few director - MD combination like Vamshi and Raja.

Many of Vamshi's films were based in the Godavari area. He was a master of comic set pieces and the dialect spoken by the actors was the authentic dialect of that area. Raja added to the local flavor by his music. Songs like 'Yennalo Godaramma', 'Kinnarasani Vachindamma', 'Kalise Prati Sandhyalo', 'Sumam Prati Sumam Sumam' and the song of the day, all provide proof of how Raja was able to transform his music so that it sounded very 'Teluguish' or 'Godavarish'. No one, just no one, can beat him in this aspect.

Vamshi's later films like 'Kokila' and 'Detective Narada' didn't fare too well in the box office. He made a film called 'Joker' where he himself was the music director. After a long gap, he made 'Anumanaspadam', which saw him reunite with Raja. Raja gave some superb songs for this film. While Raja's touch was still intact, according to those who saw the movie, Vamshi's touch wasn't. The movie flopped.

Vamshi has great respect for Raja and in one of the songs in his movie, the backdrop for the dancers were huge cutouts of Raja.

Once again, thanks Usha for putting up this song and reviving some nice memories.

True Plum. I have seen many of your posts with regard to nativity. I had written an article in my blog about how Raja had crossed boundaries in South India and had become a well loved MD in all these languages. I think there is still more to analyze on this aspect and try find out what magic he does to infuse the nativity without losing his signature? He has some magic here.

BTW, did you hear the songs of Bhagyadevata? One more proof of nativity. Lovely authentic Malayalam feel.

Nice into on Vamsi-IR.

Kokila was not by Vamsi. It was directed by Gandhi Krishna, who made Keechuraallu, Time.

The genius of Vamsi was that he could think very differently from the slotted film-makers. Vamsi was an assistant director originally (under K.Vishwanath) and he did not completely borrow Vishwanath's sensibilities, but created his own. I would say that if there is any Telugu film-maker who had his 'own' taste, distinctively unique from others, and yet with signature, it was Vamsi. K.Vishwanath too, to some extent, but then all his films usually had dosage of classical music. Like I cannot musically identify a certain song as Vishwanath song, though the lyrics help me to.It can be vishwanath or any other director with a taste in classical music. But with Vamsi, we can certainly point out that it is Vamsi. And we can point it even for scores that are not by IR (recent). Vamsi has his own grammar.

Thanks for the correction raagas. For some reason I always thought Kokila was by Vamsi, though I haven't seen the movie. It is indeed true that Vamsi had his own grammar and his brand of quirkiness was fully supplemented by Raja's music.
