Whenever IR chooses to have a postlude (something like 'Hey, I don't want to end this song yet...I love this very much and want to add something more'), it proves to be memorable. One case is the SOTD. With some octave changes and all, the strings are awesome.

Please also look for the grand arrangements for the pallavi BGM and the 1st interlude...Bass guitar usage is also remarkable...and a typical innovative Raja having the carnatic "oththu vAdhya" (the koiiing sound) background for a church song in the pallavi:-)

Devan thirichabai is a very interesting / fascinating orchestration arrangement.

When the interlude ends , there will be Thambura support . Amazing work considering that its his initial movie !

Besides, this song has very very lengthy interludes & a nice post lude also to finish off .

That is so true! And I think nothing shows that more than the evergreen "Ilaya nila" - maybe the best postlude ever?

"Devan thiruchabai malargale" also has excellent orchestration and interludes, truly "vintage IR". Such songs seem to be like vintage wines, they get better and better with age!

I love this song from SB. Its short but great, and perfect for the situation (though Sivakumar looks a little funny when doing "thom thom thom thom"). SB was a landmark film, with many innovations, Mahaganapathim without mridangam, "kalaivaaniye" composed in all aarohanams and no avarohanam, but the pick must be "paadariyen" which seamlessly ends up in "mari mari ninne" - a feat only IR can achieve!

I hope that in these days of "good albums" and "disappointments" and all the new faces of Raaja, we can still find time to appreciate his evergreen classics. In creative arts, a genius is a genius for what he has created - not for his current market value.

Magnificent 80's Ilayaraja! what a lilting tune, caressingly carried by Balu & Janaki! Incredible ludes, mind blowing second interlude with string quartet(violins playing a multiple movements composition. This multiple movement pieces is called SONATA) with piono, I don't hear the percussion instrument in the passage too. Glorious composition!

oNNum Ahalai, Nakkeeran:-) It's just that this song is too-many-times-talked-about in the DF...

It's one of top favouries among those sung by IR. For the time of its release the orchestration was way ahead...with innovative rhythm accompanied by strong bass lines, this kind of IR is what I want to hear all the time...

Unfortunately, the samples available on the web or even the "original" cassette by HMV are really pathetic compared to what I used to hear in the vinyl disk those days. The most irritating part of the "original" cassette is even some portions of interludes are chopped (missing)...yAr kittEyAvadhu original vinyl record (and stereo player) irundhA dhayavu seidhu digitize paNNippOdungappA...Alternatively, if those "recording centers" still exist somewhere in TN and if they have this disc too, can someone in TN / visiting TN take the effort to get it from those shops and upload...

Swathy, as in the case of 'siRu ponmaNi' when Nakkeran lamented, songs like 'ponnOvium kaNdEnammA engengum' have been written about / talked about a million times here in TFMpage and hence to evoke a lot of responses may be difficult...it's in fact the same for at least a 1000 IR songs:-)

Your efforts to popularise, draw attention to Raja's music is really appreciated. You are doing a splendid, commendable job running this thread...However, to evoke more participation, kindly look at my humble opinion below...

For almost a decade, people who admire Raja thronged to this website and kept analyzing, dissecting, appreciating every popular number of Raja (even some great numbers which were missed by public and didn't become so popular)...

Hence for some enthusiastic participation, you may want to provide things like
a) expert analysis, throwing some addl info which an average DF'er would miss
b) some background info, movie situation, what happened during composing, other artists involved etc.
c) better links than the coolgoose ones which are so slow that nobody today is patient to download anymore
d) may be youtube links, if they are available...
...any such marketing gimmicks:-)

"Siru Ponmani Asaiyum" - starts in a seemingly simple note - but the rhythmic movement of the Pallavi itself is superb. Then, Ahaa, the Anupallavi takes a different turn - typical IR stamp - something which each IR fan (including me) cherishes and enjoys in each listening. One of the great songs which many of today's teens would have rarely heard. They are not aware of what they are missing.

"Nee Pournami" - what a great classical song. The entire song has been made like a classical music composition. One simple difference - the Raaja touch which knows to make every song crisp and sweet - so you have lines and Swaras which do not stretch - but start and end crisply. (This stretching is something which is found very frequently in today's TFM and HFM - it is used well sometimes but is unwanted at some other instances).

I still remember my cousin (who wasn't musically trained but very smart otherwise) picking the "western" music in the second interlude when this song was released and was broadcast frequently (and we were probably 7th & 9th graders at that time...in late 70's when radio and "mike set" were our only sources of TFM outside cinema theaters...tea shops / recording centers / cassette players came a little later)...

Raja's initial folk offerings were quite authentic in parts, with clever intermingling of awesome WCM techniques / instrumental portions which enhanced the beauty while catching the ears of any listener looking for something new in TFM...

Very True. That seamless blending, which never seemed like mixing of two or more styles, is a big speciality of Raaja. That is why we (Raaja fans) enjoy these songs even today, any time we hear.

Most of the music directors who came in during late the 80s and after that follow this orchestration style of Raaja only. Some may be following it knowingly and for some others, the style may have got in unknowingly, because that was the style ruling the South Indian film music from the late 70s.

Raaja will be among the very few film composers whose fans like the interludes equally or more than the song portions. He may probably be the only Indian composer who has some fans seeing his movies only for the BGMs.

Details of the song: For long time i know only "Siriya Paravai" song from Antha oru nimidam movie, but recently i heard this song in one of the online radio and really surprised to hear such a nice song from this movie...initally i missed when they said the name of the movie, so i heard the orchestration and the way SPB and SJ rendered i immediately figured out music was by IR, so i searched around to find the name of the movie.
IR as usual did a marvellous job in the orchestration and it looks like there was a real competition going on with SPB and SJ..wow, what a duet..both done a great job...

'poo malarndhida nadamidum pon mayilE' is a rare gem ofcourse! I always think this song is of the same catgegory as 'tham thana nam dhana thALam varum' and 'poongathavE thAzh thiRavAi'...All the three innovations were for his friend BR...veeNai/violin/mridhangam etc being played in a carnatic format yet the song will sound like both folk and western...It's very difficult to categorise these in any genre...(I'm sure ARR/HJ style composers have a lot of inspiration from these numbers in their usage of violin and other solo instruments)...

I think I posted this personal exp. before on 'vaLaiyOsai'...can't help becoming nostalgic again...

Was it 86 or 87 (could be even 88)...and I stayed in a bachelor's lodge and some of my colleague friends (bachelors again) stayed in a home and they had this 14" Philips B&W TV...Palakkad used to receive the DD Chennai Thamizh transmission through the "antenna tower" in KodaikkAnal...I think on Friday nights they had this 'olium oLium' around 8 PM when there'll be some new release songs...(or was it Monday nights...may be, Monday had ChithramAla relayed from Delhi DD where once in a while you get Thamizh)

I was in their house when this 'vaLaiyOsai' appeared on the TV...WOW! Terribly impressed, we decided to watch the movie right away, yes the same night! Immediately we caught the bus to go to Palakkad town for the 2nd show at the "NEW" theater (pEru thAn 'new', it was such an old, junk, buggy, non a/c theater only where Thamizh movies used to be released...it later changed it's name to 'Sree Devi Durga')...

Probably it was me who pushed the guys to watch the movie (no marks for guessing why) and got enough from them on our way back:-) Other than this one song, it was such a kuppai...noisy, violent film with no substance watched in a kuppai theater...esp. when we started off with so much of thrill, went home totally irritated...

However, vaLaiyOsai is a beauty, both on and off screen, that I cherish to this day!

However after a long delay from censors, Sathya was released close to Diwali 88. Does it mean the movie came after Agni Natchathiram?

I remember watching this song along with all our neighbours(some 40-50) of them in a rented VHS cassette few months after the movie was released..we were small kids and got frightened during the other Pachondiya Kelada song which featured a giant-size rubber lizard :lol: The scene I remembered most was the one where the bomb is mistaken for a ball to catch and explodes. YG Mahendran's jokes were okay. 15-16 years I watched this incident in the movie with great interest, by then lots had changed in life.

I had this Sindhubhairvai dvd rented recently and showed this song to a number of American friends who had a lot of words of praise...one even wanted to play this song repeatedly and even wanted to see the whole movie...but the sub-titles were atrocious, KB hired someone who neither knew Thamizh nor English, and hence I declined and showed him just the songs, briefly narrating the story. (I was too lazy to sit and keep explaining each scene:-))

IR, Chitra, Suhasini & KJY all got well-deserved national awards for this film. I'm not sure whether KB got an award in the Thamizh language category also. In any case, even Sivakumar deserved much praise, probably his career best performance. Suhasini excels in this song on-screen, bringing in the whole essence of that character...very mature performance by everyone in this movie and excellent screenplay and dialog apart from the main course - the music ofcourse...

There's an 80's Malayalam song (by IR) in a Balu Mahendra film (I think 'yAthra' starring Mammootty)...that has a children chorus 'thannannam thAnannam thALaththil Adi...'with the same sandham as 'poottukkaL pottAlum'...(there may be minor pitch / scale / note changes)...

Interestingly, that 'thannannam thAnannam thALaththil Adi' itself is a brilliant inspiration from the classic song 'My favourite things' (from Julie Andrews' evergreen classic film "Sound of Music"...)

After the song was completed by the contestant one of the judge complemented saying the song is a special one that it has to be sung in a wavy fashion 'Alai madhiri eri erangi paadanum' and that she has done well. surprisingly of the four judges she was given 10 points each by two and 9 points each by other two.

Bharathiraja (born 17 July 1941 in Alli Nagaram, Tamil Nadu), is a South Indian filmmaker.

He displayed a story-teller's potential from an early age. Before Bharathiraja entered the film world, village life on screen was a sanitised and unrealistic caricature. But in 1977, Bharathiraja took the camera out of the studios and captured village life with a rare sensitivity and respect for its reality.

His mother Karuththamma received the National Award from the President on his behalf for his film named after her. My mistake...I thought Swathy is going to bring the "guest" to post in this thread:-) Well, BR may not have time for all these as he may be busy with his bommalAttam's and theRkaththippoNNu's. Same may be the case of others who worked with IR. May not be in every case as I see Mahendran giving interviews nowadays to all and sundry...

I recently got the 16vayathinilE DVD and probably watched portions of it a dozen times. 'Classic' would be an understatement as that may not exactly describe the raw emotions on-screen. I wondered what this movie would have been if BR had state-of-the-art equipment. Ofcourse he had the best music composer and on-screen artists (one of Kamal's best performances, Sridevi's brilliance, Rajinikanth's uniqueness, Goundamani, Gandhimathi)...but other areas like editing, camera etc suffered from lack of top-class equipment, IMO. Fortunately, this had decent subtitles, unlike the horror I normally see in other DVD's (kadalOrakkavidhaikaL is probably the worst ever).

Much has been written about sevvanthippoo mudichcha before (even IR mentioned a lot about the selection of tune for this song in his recap for Dhinathanthi). Let me add a couple more...

I used to often mention about the WCM piece in the second interlude. When I watched the movie, I could see that the salangai oli that's mixed with the strings is for the oyil kummi artists, very nicely picturised also...what a great combo this BR-IR!

'Aththula kAththadichchA alaiyOdum'. Kamal wonders what to say next...there's a pause...Sridevi blinks her beautiful eyes...there comes the next line...'keNda veLaiyAdum' (kayal vizhi - often keNdai meen is associated with eye - and this fish used to be the symbol of the pANdiyarkaL who ruled the south where both BR-IR are from, what a tribute to their maN)!

Anyone watching this movie (or even hearing the olichchiththiram, which used to be horn-speaker-cast a lot those days) can't help but love Sridevi's voice. I think that's something that took her to a different plane compared to many other actresses who had a lot of success / fame at her time / later on, but could never reach her level. She is very brilliant with her voice especially in this movie...

The film in a whole had fabulous songs ..

Napolean too appeared first in this movie in a old man role

Story is simple.. Renuka(BAlachander serial fame) leaves the village because of NApolean who grabs all the land from them..

After 15-20 yrs she comes back with her sons to the same village and starts a new life ..

Suganya - who is related to them falls in love for Rahul (elder son) while ramarjun(the second son - brother of Ambika and Radha) falls in love with napolean's daughter Aswini..

How all ends well is the rest of the story
i guess this was the last film of bharatiraja-IR combination

Great song. The pallavi and the anupallavi themselves are masterpieces - and the way IR uses flutes and tabla in the song - Aaha !!

Recently watched "Kizhakke pogum Rail" of BR-IR combo. BR must have had a great audacity in casting "girl next door looks" heroine Radhika and "ashadu moonji" hero Sudhakar for his second film and that too after a phenomenal successful Kamal-Sridevi pair in "16 vayadhinile". In "KPRail" , not a scene was out of place. BR could successfully capture audience's attention in every frame with IR's bgm serving as his right hand and Nivas's photography , his left hand. Though the film was controversial [I think BR was clever enough to hide behind the reason that the story happened pre independence era when superstition rode high among rural masses] , even that so called nudity was deftly handled without an iota of sleaze.
It is no surprise that for a music composer with a calibre like IR, composing a very haunting humming score [with Jency lending her voice] for the budding romance between the young pair . But what makes IR a cut above the rest was how he conveyed the cruelty meted out to an innocent village girl when she was left all alone, naked . to fend for herself , by an abrupt silence. That silence was deafening, wailing for her helplessness, stark, sudden, a death knell ringing loud to put an end to the villagers blind beliefs , only to be followed by a volley of strings during the hair raising chase sequence and a happy "malargaLe nadhaswarangal " reunion in the "kizhakke pogum rail"

I wasn't as fortunate as thumburu when I rented KPR recently as I could not watch more than 20% of the movie with my teenage son around. Most scenes had to be FF'ed and it was such an incomplete feeling of watching a BR movie:-( In addition, I got some 'archanai' from my wife as well, for renting such vulgar(?) movies.

The 'poovarasampoo pooththAchchu' picturisation is perhaps one of the very best of BR, IMO.

Y'day in Jaya Max saw " Kaadhal Dheepam ondru yetrinen nenjukulle..." from Kalyanaraman. Great song and very well rendered by Malaysia Vasudevan.

The hightlight is the violin interlude. For this particular song, nobody could have imagined such a piece. Only Gnani can do such wonders. It was almost like a mini symphony. :clap:
