Hello Everybody,
Let's discuss the solution for the contest right here. Just sent in my entry today. Series 2 has just started... so let's get the ball rolling....

nirosha sen
7th December 2004, 07:33 PM
Yeah, deadline for NST puzzle Series 1 is Dec 11th. Hope those who've completed managed to submit them earliest. But the snag that might clinch the prizes would be the sloganeering!! I think it's merely a ruse Pa!!

Anyway, it's a fun puzzle to try. So let's not lose heart, okay????

Rule of thumb : Always look for vowels and try to make the words with them. Upwards - Downwards - Diagonal - forward and backward!!

All words are based on the previous day's copy of NST!! Nice way to make people buy more papers Pa!!

Thanks for dropping by... Last week's puzzle was a bit tricky!!! I mean - for example, "Kuan Yew" is actually 2 words rather than 1 word but "feng shui" is actually 1 word - at least that's what I think. That's where the confusion comes in and prep words don't count...

Hema
8th December 2004, 05:48 AM
hi jang
but the triky was the last 2 days, 3 and 4th decmember.
what about u.
did u manage to get the answer ?

Hi jang,

We must do something different then others.
For the first series more than 20,000 people took part.
We must to something unique to get the judge attention.
Wht u think?

I saw the article in NST about the entries but what's the point? I mean it all depends on the correct answers and the most creative slogan, if they choose the winning entry based on the best presentation - that's totally unfair!!! I'm only gonna focus on the slogan. Don't you think it's strange to see more than 5 words hidden inside the puzzle. Have to choose the answer carefully!!!

Hema

I don't know abt you guys, but I would pay more attention to the words that are made of nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Names are proper nouns, so I'd be a bit wary there! But only God knows what these NST people actually want!!

Anyway, I found yesterday :

chart - vertical, downwards
ruslin - horizontal, backwards
cancer - vertical, upwards
bailor - diagonal, downwards
break - horizontal only

They need only five right???? Break is directly under Ruslin which why is I'd be wary of using it, okay???? Good luck! :)

jangofett
16th December 2004, 10:14 AM
Hi Nirosha... Welcome back...

BREAK and CHART are not the answers as the words don't appear in the headlines. My choice for the 5 words would be:

CANCER
ONCOLOGISTS
BAILOR

Anyway, yesterday's papers reported that 70% of the entries were all correct!!!!!! So, like I said earlier, it's the slogans that's going to make the difference!!!! Real catch-22 situation isn't it????

unkaunka
18th December 2004, 02:14 PM
Hai, I am James. Getting the right words can be very tricky. Especially the 2nd Series.
Some questions first. What are headlines? Are they the Bold Typed ones, meaning the Main ones. And the lesser headlines in normal big letters. What about headlines on pictures with stories?
I think Words can be proper nouns (names of people, countries ect), abbreviations and acronyms (APEC etc), and normal words, as long as they appear in the HEADLINEs. I believe that half words (or smaller word in a longer word) and hyphenated words are not allowed. In the case that more 5 words could be found, preference will be given to words in the MAIN headlines, if not, longer words over shorter words. Proper words over abbreviations or acronyms if same length.
Having said that, with 70% correct entries, there must be a lot of red herrings now. So be warned.

May I contribute some probable answers.

Dec 7 TUNNEL GHOST RAMIN VANUATU SPY

Dec 8 DOLLAR GUNS SPAIN RETRACT FYLOVER

Dec 9 VETERAN POLICY SOON JEDDAH NIKE (preferred to MAIL)

Dec 10 BROTHEL PATTANI AMNESTY PROPERTY MINOR

Dec 11 CAMP CHANGE JOURNEY CANBERRA DOMINIC

Dec 14 GRENADE SCRIPTS SLABS HYMNS FACE

Dec 15 RUSLIN VACCINE CANCER ONCOLOGISS BAILOR

Dec 16 HIKE FLUNK BIRD FILTHY PAK *or LANES

* I have a problem here. The word BACKLANES in the headlines "CITY HALL TO LIGHT UP CHOW KIT BACKLANES" should be
"CITY HALL TO LIGHT UP CHOW KIT BACK LANES" I believe BACK LANES is two words not one. I have checked all the dictionaries I have (more than 20) NOT one has the word BACKLANE in it. Is it NST's typo error??!!

Dec 17 PRIDE HAWKERS MISSILE RICE IN (preferred over PM)

Dec 18 LUXURY CRASH STENCH GLORY BERNAS *HEALTH

*HEALTHCARE is one word slogan, so HEALTH is not acceptable.

I certainly would like feedback on the problematical ones. Better words perhaps.

Good Luck on the slogan writing!!

Cheers,

james

Hai

Here are my answers for Series 5 for:

Jan 18 KNOCK MENACE WARD MUDDY ROGUE

Jan 19 PEDDLER WATER GUNSHOT SKULL SPOUSES

Jan 20 TROUBLE POLICE MOTHER POISON-PEN SABOTEURS

POISON-PEN is actually POISON PEN. No hyphen. But the headline uses POISON-PEN. So I will assume NST is using it (wrongly) as one word.
